I always say that I don't like horror but Candela Obscura has forced me to reevaluate the truth of that statement to certain degrees.
Particularly Chapter 3, which keeps violently reigniting my inner Torchwood fangirl and like, yeah, alright, maybe I do enjoy some elements of horror. Anyway can't wait to be traumatized by whatever happens after the break tomorrow!

ok we are 10 minutes into kollok and i am straight up not having a good time but I am going to commit to this hour of watching. to keep myself from losing it i'm going to do some very irritating stream of consciousness on this post and post it at the end, nonrebloggably so as to not yuck any yums (though feel free to go wild in the replies). also I need to point out: I don't have misophonia. I have openly and repeatedly said I think the Sam Riegel ASMR ad is not just inoffensive, but actively very funny and enjoyable. The sounds on this show are setting my teeth on edge. I hate it. also for the intro the immersion is genuinely WORSE than say, CR or D20 because everyone's just reading prologues that they've written.
speaking of we're done with the prologues to the prologue and into the prologue, as demonstrated by the title screen and horrible noises.
Tumblr media
I call this filter the "yeah I've got mild astigmatism and have taken mushrooms before, you're not special"
hmmm we're stuck in this fuckery for a while and i'm suffering so anyway folks i've made it so polygon will think CR is good:
Tumblr media
the music is pretty good I will give them that. also this is literally not special though. like Zac just was like uhhhhhh math as any GM would say, he just was weirdly aiming for suaveness instead of like. normal.
All the profanity on this show sounds like a mormon or a ten year old who just learned the word "fuck" and is trying it out. as a woman who swears constantly i'm like what is HAPPENING. also this blonde woman who isn't on the show in the present day is rolling so hilariously badly. is this why she's not on. girl get out.
back to the present day; this actually is a really good industrial music video ruined by some actual play in the background
"zac, I'm going to command attention please"
"who's zac"
"sorry, driver" ah yes yes this is SOOOOOOO much more immersive i'm totally not making the jerk-off motion
i love u danielle radford you deserve better. although the actual RP now that we're in it is like, fine.
really i think a really significant problem is that this is the most 2014 YA-dystopia plot that ever plotted except as a core part of the premise, everyone is 30. I feel, honestly, that this is the other big issue in actual play that people at polygon obsess over that leaves me ice cold, (also? lots of fandom cold takes), but like...I was a HUGE sf nerd pretty much from childhood, and I think a lot of people came to actual play for a number of reasons not tied to the genres in which it typically exists (fantasy, science fiction, horror). This is fine but it means you get people who act like VERY standard genre conventions are either the most brilliant and original creation on earth, or utterly baffling. Anyway my point is that this is giving Divergent by Veronica Roth but it THINKS it's somewhere between Twin Peaks by David Lynch and the adaptation of the Handmaid's Tale and it's like no babe. you're Divergent by Veronica Roth. stop fronting like you're Twin Peaks. You're Divergent. By Veronica Roth. Which I read while stranded at LaGuardia over a decade ago.
lighting effects are fine honestly. reminds me of the Doja Cat 2020 MTV EMA version of Say So. Wish I were just rewatching that. rotating rock i love you. you are the best thing here other than danielle radford. I feel like I'm in a really fancy Spencer's Gifts. by the way I know i'm being pretty bitchy and incoherent here BUT I'm sober; let's hear it for Stupidly Bougie Soda and Nonalcoholic Spirits.
I'm also eating bean dip with a spoon. in my defense I made REALLY good bean dip and I don't have chips.
I just. other than the digital filter in the flashback I genuinely don't see how this is different than D20 except lacking in any charms and OH GOD THAT'S TIME.
but I want to add that like...the thing is Danielle (C-dubbs) was doing some wacky funny stuff and it felt like it was being shut down and to be fair I get wanting to stick WITHIN the genre but this whole thing feels joyless, and not like "oh, survival horror is so grimdark and sad", I am a tragedy enjoyer, but like. it feels...mandated.
Also this is weird and picky but for all of Those High Production Values (repeated direct quote from the Polygon article) they do a weirdly bad job of filming the die rolls? Like, they cut to the dice trays at the wrong time?
Finally, and this is just a pot shot at Polygon but they should stop making it so easy, but the article was like "I watched the 4-ish hour first episode and I didn't have a clue what was going on but it had Those High Production Values" and it's like...I was demonstrably fucking around on tumblr and in GIMP while watching and I have a pretty solid idea of what was going on. Maybe it goes nuts in the remaining 2.5 hours that I may chip away at to be able say I watched a full episode and decided it "wasn't for me" *smiles like I'm a waitress on Hell's Kitchen and Gordon Ramsey just asked me a question* but I think you might be dumb.
CONCLUSION: just watch the Doja Cat 2020 MTV EMA version of Say So, read Divergent (by Veronica Roth) (you don't have to be at LaGuardia) and like, check out Mentopolis or Misfits and Magic if you want to see Danielle Radford in a Kids on Bikes game that is good.

Saw @respectissexy making fan castings for both the rat grinders and bar parents and I probably would add the fantasy high teachers because a abott elementary type season would be so funny.
Let’s start with the rat grinders though.
Kipperlilly Coperkettle
I agree that Aabria Iyengar is the only right choice here… i’d love to see her to play what is basically an even meaner Suvi.
Ruben Hobclapp
Look hear me out: Sam Riegel as Ruben. It be so funny, also Sam would be a bard again which is just good for nature and he always has great chemistry with Aabria.
Mary Ann Skuttle
Though one for me but I think I will go with Jasmine Bhullar over Rekha Shankar on this one. Jasmine is already so good with just little creatures in coffin run. Also I’d love to see her as a player. Also I think she can play her respectfully and still really fucking funny.
Oisin Hakinvar
Ross Bryant! I was between Iffy, Hank Green and Ross on this one but I believe Ross is the Choice! I just want him in the dome. Also he gives secretly buff nerd vibes.
Ivy Embra
Ai👏mee👏Car👏rero👏 She plays magnificent bitches so well please. Also great chemistry with Aabria she deserves to be chaotic with Aimee for once instead of getting her shit wrecked by her.
Lucy Frostblade
Persephone Valentine. Again another player with great chemistry with Aabria but also she already broke my heart as Sam Nightingale, I’d allow her to do it a second time as Lucy. Also the looks she would serve. Lucy deserves the glow up she is my favorite of the rat grinders after all.
Buddy Dawn
I’d rather would like to have campaign with my girl Lucy but if need id need Damian Haas to make Bobby acceptable to me.

Can someone please suggest to Sam Riegel that he add Eadwulf to the list of excellent-yet-questionable teachers at Veth's adventurers' summer camp?
It just really feels like something Veth would do (He knows a lot about sneaking, killing, survival, and magic). And Caleb (and Liam) finding out after the fact feels like the kind of trolling Sam would do.
And it seems like something Eadwulf might agree to (with a little nudging) if he didn't have anything pressing going on. (It would be good for him!)
Someone please convey this to Sam Riegel. Many thanks.

Just a dumb thing that popped into my head after I watched the new Fallout show. Seriously though, if you liked the show and haven't played this yet, you really should. Fantastically well-written, an all-star voice cast (including but not pictured: Liam O'Brien, Sam Riegel, and Laura Bailey of Critical Role fame and about a million other things), several DLC areas that each add a small game's worth of content themselves... I really could just gush about it for hours, guys, go play it

I don't know if you already answered this, but what does Dingo's voice sound like in your head? If he were an animated character in a show, who would voice him?
...I don't think I've answered this on Tumblr, but it has been spoken of in the LBSC Disco & extensively with @goldenlaurelleaveswrites because well. 😂😂😂
So. I am a Nerd, right? And I've known about Crit Role for a while now, but I only just started watching within the past year? And here's the thing.
If Dingo ever actually made it on screen, he would be voiced by Sam Riegel or No One Else.
I would also add to that that Andrew Russel can move along and Mercer is now English Luka, but that's purely selfish. 😂 I mean look. Look.
Tell me they're not Dingo and Luka. Look me in the eye and say it. Sam even has a (horrible) Australian accent! (Yes, each of these sentences is a link. 😂)
So yeah. If y'all weren't aware. Dingo's English VA is Sam Riegel. No clue about French. 😂

On Repeat Playlist Tag Game
Rules: Shuffle your repeat playlist 10 times and tag 10 people. Tagged by @defira85. 😊
Playlist is called Forward to Twenty-Twenty-Four, it's songs that I vibe with for the new year and I plan to add to it as the year goes on. For the time being, it's only got 23 songs, so you'll be learning near-half the songs in it.
Tagging @rederiswrites, @kevin-sedai, @reignssquad, and... um... anyone else who sees this and wants to? No pressure.
I've been lowkey obsessed with this song since last year. I think I first heard this band right here on Tumblr, but I stumbled across this song in particular on YouTube and was instantly hooked. I haven't really listened to any of their other songs, because this one sets such a high bar to pass for me.
Listen, Sam Riegel and Alanna Ubach just sound fantastic, and the song really pulls at my heartstrings. I just wish it had a few more verses. Really meets the definition of short and sweet.
I really enjoyed the live action remake of The Little Mermaid, and also I was really attracted to Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric. And I love his voice. I just love the mixed tones of desperation and determination that permeate this song.
Heard in the Spider-Man: Miles Morales video game and it just really grabbed my attention and didn't let go. Not my typical genre, but I just really enjoy the vibe and the tone.
Sometimes you hear a song playing on the supermarket radio and desperately type in the lyrics you can half-remember when you get home so you can listen to it over and over again. This was one of those songs for me.
Have you seen the D&D web series "1 For All" on YouTube? It's delightful, and this song is a great summary of the antics that the three "heroes" get up to (spoiler: they're a party of three murderhobos and I love them all).
I specifically sought out this song years and years after its release, after reading about what led to its creation, and since that first listen it's appeared on multiple repeat playlists. The righteous anger and refusal to capitulate to public pressures really speaks to me.
Listen, Vanessa Amorosi is my childhood. My family would play her album The Power so often during car rides that for the longest time I could remember most of the lyrics without the songs even playing. This song in particular is from an album of hers that I bought with my own money as a teenager, so it'll always have a special place in my heart (though it's not my favourite song from that album).
I've seen approximately one and a half episodes of BeastStars, but Jonah Scott appeared on Drawfee once and then I found out he was bisexual so I followed him on Twitter and here we are. Sometimes it's just that simple.
Fitting that the last of the ten songs from my Forward to Twenty-Twenty-Four playlist is "This Is the New Year", which, surprisingly, was not the first song I picked for the playlist. I first learned about it because Glee covered it, but in more recent years I've come to enjoy their music as a whole. Also one of the lead singers is gay, and the involvement of a man who's into dudes is usually reason enough for me to check something out.

Hey, hope you're doing good! For the writer ask game:
🏜️ ⇢ what's your favourite type of comment to receive on your work?
🍦 ⇢ name three good things about a character you hate
☁️ ⇢ what made you choose your username?
🪲 ⇢ add 50 words to your current wip and share the paragraph here (no pressure if you don't want to do this one though)
🏜️ ⇢ what's your favourite type of comment to receive on your work?
Long, in depth ones? This feels like kind of a cop-out because to me it feels obvious, but the best comments to me are ones which point out things the reader liked, which have cogent questions to ask about what was written, comments which recognise things I put in on purpose and which point out things I didn't think of in those terms but which make sense! It's very rewarding to just know that your work and effort is appreciated and being engaged with, and that people are meeting that effort with effort of their own.
🍦 ⇢ name three good things about a character you hate
So I don't really hate many characters? I hate characters I feel are useless or which undermine the plot by their existence, but I think a lot of characters I dislike serve some kind of purpose and can even do it well - I don't like Scanlan, but he is a well-crafted character.
Consequently the easy pick for me to answer about would probably be MCU Tony Stark but uh, fuck no, because the things his existence serves are all kind of fascistic underpinnings of the superhero genre and I don't wanna do that, thank you.
So instead I'm gonna go with Scanlan because while I don't hate him I can at least say there's things that are good about him:
Namely, his avoidance of consequences and blame for his own part in his friends not knowing something was wrong is pretty accurate to how people do that when they don't want to negatively impact their own self-image. I viscerally hate how he blames them all for not reading his mind when he purposefully deceived them, but it is an accurate depiction of those kinds of people and that kind of behaviour, so I can respect Sam Riegel's skill there.
He can actually be kind of funny sometimes.
The number of times one of Scanlan's random spell choices saved the entire group is stupidly high. Riegel doesn't have the same knowledge of character skills or strategy as, say, Travis does, but his ability to just wing it and make Scanlan's random selection of items and spells work is genuinely impressive.
☁️ ⇢ what made you choose your username?
A blog is a place for one's thoughts, I am prone to getting wordy and writing things damn near essays, ergo Essay Of Thoughts.
🪲 ⇢ add 50 words to your current wip and share the paragraph here
See. Now I have to pick one of my WIPs to write something for and I don't want to spoil what I intend to work on next. Hmmm.
“We spoke to Scanlan,” Vex says quietly. In the soft light from the candle she’s gilded at the edges, the play of light and shadow striking enough to make Percy want to capture it in pencil. Then her words hit him and he stiffens. The wry twist of her mouth says plenty. “Are you both all right?” “Fine,” he says which is… not untrue, physically there’s nothing wrong with him and Cassandra is no different from usual. It’s just not the whole truth. If anyone should understand his particular defensiveness, he thinks it’d be Vex with all her careful tact.
Technically that's 100 words, but oh well.

Loquacious is Up To Some Shit evidence (so far)
Changeling and can look like anybody
Bard (they’re always up to something)
Definitely fired a reporter for getting too close to something
Related to that- Is hiding evidence said reporter found
Asmodeus emphasised ‘fey’ and there’s only one motherfucker here who is one
Has made Two ‘I’m a traitor’ jokes this episode
He’s played by Sam Riegel
The same man who dressed as Aimee (Opal) last episode, who until Zerxus made his deal was the only player character to make a deal with a betrayer god
He isn’t interested in plane shifting. Like at all.
EDITED TO ADD
He’s also a warlock and we still have no idea who is patron is
He’ll be gone before the next Apogee solstice? What does that mean?
Protects Laerynn’s identity & resolves to make her the hero when she does something Extremely Incorrect (possibly even whatever he’s already covered up, something that might be related to the late Evandrin)

Your last post had me thinking. Do you think any of the group would save themselves(don’t ask me how) or stay with everyone else as it ends?
Ohh love that question! What do I think...? I... think.... hm. Wait that's more complicated than I first thought.
Zerxus is the First Knight of Avalir and he's going to honor that title. Not just because he's honor bound to the city and its people but also in memory of Evandrin
Loquatius is...  probably... self-serving... wait no, he's played by Sam Riegel who always plays characters that pretend to be self-serving and actually turn out to be self-sacrificing as all get-out. "My secrets are fun!" my ass. Final verdict on Loquatius: I don't fucking know man, Sam is an enigma. But he'll probably stay by Laerryn's side to the bitter end.
Speaking of Laerryn: she'll do whatever it takes to protect her creations - "it has to have been worth it" - I can see her as someone who theoretically puts future inventions, discoveries, and her survival before saving anyone else but i can also see her getting stuck in the moment, thinking "there's still time, I can still do this" until time has run out. So. I think she would save herself, if she can see past her own self-confidence (arrogance?) to realize this is the moment to go.
Nydas.... I think part of him is still that awe-struck orphan, believing magic can do anything, thinking it's the most beautiful thing in the world, seeing Avalir, the City of Crowns as more than it really is. I can see him trying with all his might to save the city, I can also see him going down with Laerryn's hubris.
Patia is... interesting. Out of all of them she reads as the most self-serving, the most ambitious character to me. (also I'm almost positive she's an Enchanter and enchanters are just inherently fucked up lmao) BUT! This city is her family's legacy! Her grandfather lifted it up into the air and I can see her pride making her want to keep it in the air with everything she has. Also she deeply believes in the advancement of magic. In true Marisha Ray fashion she takes notes, collects knowledge everywhere she goes - and she doesn't keep it to herself (although she... does have secrets of course, and a lot of... forgetful friends) she adds to the library, to a collection I'm sure she wants to see continue to grow for many generations. I'm conflicted with her. But ultimately I think she would prioritize her own life, her mind, as a collection of knowledge herself... yeah, she would save herself so the advancements of this Age of Arcanum would survive with her.
.... Cerrit.... if he wasn't a father? I think he'd try to save his city. But as it is... given the chance I think he would try to save his children. I mean. They have wings. They can just fly away.
But "if given the chance" is the thing: I don't think they'll get much chance to make a real decision. Shit is gonna hit the fantasy fan soon and hard and there's gonna be so much of it in every direction and- sorry that got really gross lmao. But you know what I mean.
