The river that isn’t there is the same one you could drown in, face down.

Sibling Showdown!!!
Tumblr media
This showdown consists of 64 sibling sets facing off against each other, as well as a few one-off polls of sets who didn’t make the actual bracket but who I wanted to include in some capacity.  Polls will last a week.  Round One of section A will go live on April 16, with section B going live the day after, section C the day after that, and section D the day after that.
Propaganda is allowed!  I just ask that it be kept positive.  Argue for your faves instead of against someone else’s.  Every sibling set who made it in the showdown is there because someone wanted them to be, so keep it kind.
Will the winners be the siblings that love each other the most?  That are most capable of killing other sibling groups with their bare hands?  That have the most sibling swag?  It’s up to you to decide!  You get to choose the manner and parameters you judge each sibling set for.

“With water, there is life. Without it, we die”, environmental activist Reynaldo Domínguez says as he fights back the tears. The phrase, which he has been repeating like a mantra for years, summarizes a long struggle his community has been leading to save the Guapinol and San Pedro rivers, which serve water to hundreds of people in the Bajo Aguán region in northern Honduras.  Members of the community say that an iron mine established in the area in 2018 is having a negative impact on both rivers and affecting the agriculture and fishing they depend on. Since then, they have reported suffering harassment and attacks by Honduran authorities and the company that runs the mining project. “Things have been getting increasingly worse,” Juana Zúñiga, environmental defender and leader of the Guapinol Community Council, says. “There is a lot of fear in the community. People are scared to walk the streets after all the attacks we have suffered but we know we have to be strong and continue, there’s no other choice.”
EDIT: The website set up by the community with more information can be found here. (In Spanish)

This handsome boy is a male broadbilled hummingbird, a species that spends their winters in central and South America and their summers….
In northern Mexico and some parts of the southwestern US. They rarely go much further north than Tucson, although in recent years with climate change some ranges are shifting. (We also once had a migrating broadbill we’d banded get blown off course over the Gulf of Mexico and get documented in *Louisiana*. Buddy was SUPER lost.)
He’s also been mashing his face into flowers, as shown by the pollen all over. He’s a regular at our site, and we’ve been seeing him at least once most sessions for the last year or so during their season.
Hummingbirds are VERY “site loyal”; they have an excellent memory of where they’ve found food in the past, and as long there’s still food there, they’ll return year after year. It’s dramatic enough that our site will see the same birds returning with our bands, but won’t see birds with bands from the nearby San Pedro river site, while they have the same trend - their already banded recaptures are birds recorded at their site, but they don’t see our birds.
