Sc(bear)e Time || Nora & Elias
TIMING: Night of June 10th LOCATION: Five Tides Inn PARTIES: @eliaskahtri and @honeysmokedham SUMMARY: Nora goes to visit her Least Favorite Person for a snack. It doesn't go the way she wanted it to. CONTENT WARNINGS: Depression and Suicidal Ideation
Elias had been unnerved since interacting with the strange ham person online. They had even posted a picture of himself, looking for him. When he thought blocking them would be the end, he nearly screamed when he saw the message from a second account in his inbox. He had let it sift to the back of his mind for a while while he got through his shift at work. Still, it lingered. He had never really gotten into any drama, and he didn’t know what he had done at this point, but he knew this girl was threatening him, and no one was taking it seriously.
Getting back to Five Tides Inn to pick up the last of his things, he still had the thoughts lingering in the back of his mind, like a quiet buzzing that was enough to keep them thinking about it but not draw their full attention. He had never been threatened on the internet before, and he had never had it be from someone that could potentially find him since they all lived in the same town. Pulling out his key card, he opened the door and immediately froze when he opened it, realizing someone had been in his room, things were thrown around, and an empty takeout container was on the bed. No, this couldn’t be, could it?
The door swung to a close behind Elias, Nora blocking him from his only exit. "Fancy meeting you here." It wasn't fancy. Nora has stalked the man from his job to his hotel, waited for him to leave again then let herself in. He didn't have much in terms of things to go through. She had noted the dumb teddy bear she'd thrown to the side during her search of his belongings. Even worse was his choice of leftovers. Nora had eaten them because she wasn't picky, but the dude needed to start making better choices.
Nora reached into her pockets pulling out the two knives. Vampire, a long blade the handle made from human bone given to her by a vampire, and Slayer, a well loved bowie whose wooden handle was faded with use and wear but still had an impeccable sharpness, given to her by a slayer. Nora had killed someone with Vampire already and knew that slayer had seen a full life with Emilio. Raising her knives up she took one step forward. "I hope you enjoyed your final day."
Immediately upon seeing Nora, Elias dropped his keys, hands unable to work right as he went through a whole-body panic. Upon seeing the knives, his hands began to tremble slightly. “Honeysmokedham,” he spoke in a quiet voice, eyes wide with fear as he kept his gaze trained on the knives. “Listen, this is a little… extreme of a response, don’t you think?” He then spoke, raising his hands in the air in surrender, backing up slowly away from the girl.
Then, she threatened him. Well and truly threatened him. He quickly fumbled for his phone, making quick work to press the power button several times in order to call emergency services, keeping the phone behind his back in hopes she wouldn’t catch on. “You need to leave,” he then said sternly, forcing the fear and panic to take to the back burner, he needed to keep himself alive, and being afraid wasn’t going to help him in that moment.
Nora had scoured this man’s blog. Finding his name. Finding his place of work. Enabling her to stalk him effectively. Her reward was swift. A meal drifted to her, the scent of sandalwood and that familiar unknown scent. She’d never smelled it outside of people’s fear scent’s before, but it held a daunting deepness. Something isolating. Something singular. One day she would figure out the scent, she just needed to track it down. Elias was telling her she needed to leave. Nora’s face was practiced in non-responding, she took another step forward.
Behind Elias an illusion flickered. Nora’s voice drifted out of the illusioned clone. “Why, Elias?” Another illusion popped up to his left. “Yeah, why?” A final illusion appeared on his right. “Didn’t you want a roommate Elias?” In each of her clone’s hands she clutches two knifes. That was eight knifes! Too bad she never figured out how to make her illusions tangible.
Great, now Elias was so scared he was hallucinating. There were too many of the ham girl, and he squeezed his eyes shut and covered his ears, shaking his head. There was no way this was happening. He just needed to calm down. Two seconds in, four seconds out through the mouth. Two seconds in, four seconds out. It wasn’t working. Instead, he kept hearing the ham girl keep saying his name.
Eight knives?! He popped his eyes open to see all of the same girl, all holding two knives each. He looked around, realizing that in his insanity, maybe this was all real. No, there wasn’t… none of this was real. It couldn’t be. He just had to lie down or something. So, in his hallucinating state, he slowly made his way over to the bed and laid down, staring at the ceiling in shock and horror. “No. This isn’t happening,” he stated aloud to himself, trying to ignore the ham girl completely. “Go away!” He then exclaimed, squeezing his eyes shut again. Maybe if he fell asleep when he woke up, it would all be over, he thought to himself, as if he could ever fall asleep under all that panic.
For as long as Nora could remember, she’d been scaring people. It was an integral part of who she was. Fear coursed through her veins, driving her every action and thought. In the twenty years of experience she’d seen many reactions to fear. People running away. People squaring up. People freezing. What Nora had never seen was someone getting into bed. Nora let the illusions drop away form her as she watched the fully grown adult man, tell her to go away, get into bed and squeeze his eyes shut.
Nora stepped forward. One step after another. Eventually she was leaning over Elias. Fear was still coursing through him. Surely he didn’t believe this was a bad dream? He was still scared. Nora reached forward, poking him in the cheek none too gently. “Boo.” She whispered with the action. Maybe this would kick him into gear. Maybe it would make him do anything. Nora was begging for him to do something interesting. She had gone through all the trouble of tracking him down, breaking in, and setting up a beautiful scare for him. The least he could do was pee his pants or something.
As futile as it was, he was hoping if he lay still for long enough, Nora would lose interest and leave. He couldn’t help but think that if he did that, he would get stabbed. So, he opened his eyes and stared at the girl with a nervous expression. He had to be hallucinating the extra of her, could fear do that to a person? He’s sure it was possible. He was too afraid to move, as if any sudden movement would get him into trouble. “What. Do you want from me?” He asked through gritted teeth, hands clenched in front of his face.
Whatever she wanted from him, he wasn’t giving it to her; that was clear. He realized how ridiculous it was, a fully grown man afraid of a girl who looked no older than a child. Scrambling out of the bed, he stood on the opposite side of her, hands raised in front of him. “Can we just put the knives down and talk?” He then asked, taking a step back towards the wall. The last thing he wanted was for her to get behind him and do something.
He must have decided this wasn’t a dream. He was back up and scrambling around. He was funny in a very sad and very pitiful way. If Nora was capable of feeling back for her fear victims, she might have been. Instead she longed to take it to the next level. “I want you to scream so loud that your little neighbors think you’re being brutally murdered.” Nora told him. Her monotone voice remained devoid of all emotion. As if all of this meant nothing to her. As if this wasn’t the funniest thing she’d done in a long time.
“Put down the knives?” Nora was taking a step closer. “We can talk with them out.” Nora was close enough that she could point one at him and almost touch his throat with it. Almost. She liked to scare with fright house rules. No touching. “Get to talking.”
Elias swallowed loudly as she demanded he scream. The problem with that was he was when he was threatened, he found that he had a knack for shutting down completely and letting the entire thing happen to him. He found it easier that way to let it happen and deal with its effects after it was over. That didn’t seem to be allowed in this case. As Nora suddenly brought the knife closer to his throat, he flinched.
“My way of dealing with people bullying me online is to get to the root of the situation and press them back.” Elias began with his arms up in the air in surrender. “I realize that was wrong, as it hurt you, and I’m sorry that I did that.” He concluded, squeezing his eyes shut, waiting for the knife to come. “But I don’t think you’re a bad person. From what I’ve seen online, you’re incredibly clever and know how to get information, and that’s a very impressive quality to have.” He rambled on, hoping that if he was going to die, at least he’d die doing what he did best, and that was talking.
The man’s fear was still thick and heavy, even as he tried to talk away the situation. And he was talking. Why was he complimenting her? Nora didn’t care what this sad pathetic man thought about her. The only thing she cared about was giving him an experience so traumatizing that he would need therapy for the rest of his life. Because that would be funny. Nora threw one of the knives at him. Obviously she wasn’t trying to kill him, you can’t attend life long therapy if you’re dead. It thudded against the wall next to his head. “Shut up.” Nora added.
Nora stepped forward closing the distance between them. Her second knife pressing close to his chest. Nora would have liked to press it against his neck, like in all those badass movies. Nora was also aware that she was way too short to do that effectively and look cool. Nora was careful to make sure the knife never actually touched him. “Final warning, scream now or die.”
There was a small voice that came into Elias’s head then, quiet and unassuming. This is what you want, isn’t it? It had said. And it was right. There was a reason he had moved out to Wicked’s Rest. It was because his life was meaningless. And here he was, faced with death. Instead of fighting it, there he was, accepting it. He had been depressed for so long that he had completely uprooted his life to try again. What if trying again wouldn’t work?
“Then get it over with.” He finally said, opening his eyes and staring the girl in the eyes. “Do it. Get it over with.” He demanded. He felt his fear dissipate at that moment. She was all talk. She wasn’t going to kill him as badly as he wanted it to happen. “Do it!” He then shouted, turning angry.
Great. For all his big talk Nora had gotten one that was suicidal. Someone who wanted her to stab him. Fuck this. Nora summoned a new illusion. This one wrapped Nora in nothing, making it look like she’d disappeared. This was a harder illusion to keep up, because it required shifting of the environment around her to make it look like she was disappearing. A sound illusion accompanied it. It filled the room with laughter.
It was a manical laughter, taking from the sound track of some horror movie Nora had seen as a kid. She didn’t remember the name of it, all she remembered was the mocking tones of the film. They added a few words as they laughed, “You can’t even tell what’s real or fake anymore? You’re too busy making up your own scary scenarios in your own little hotel room to cry to.” Nora didn’t want to stab a man she was trying to torment. You don’t get food easy food sources by killing the easy to scare ones. She just wanted to scare him. Nora retrieved her knife from the wall and started walking towards the exit. Maybe she can at least make him think he made it up himself. God. He really knew how to make this unfun. Lame.
As soon as Nora had disappeared, Elias stood there, numb. He wanted to be scared. He should be scared. All of this had to be a bad dream, summoned to remind him of all the things that taunted him during the waking hours. Then, the laughter started. He wanted to crawl back into the bed. His heartbeat picked up, the panic starting to rise to the surface. A hysterical laughter broke from his lips, falling to the ground and staring into the nothing where the girl had once stood. Maybe he was finally going crazy. The things he stamped down inside finally forced themselves to the surface in some sort of psychotic break.
The voices kept talking, they kept tormenting him. Was this finally it? Had he finally lost his mind? The fear rose in him until it bubbled over, and he began to blubber to himself, tears shining in his eyes and threatening to fall. Everything he had ran away from was coming back to torment him and there was nothing he could do to stop it. “Make it stop.” He whispered to himself, rocking back and forth as he covered his ears with his hands, desperate to make the voices cease. Nora made it stop the moment she exited the apartment of the crying man. She had never met a lamer dude in her life. Was he even good for a good scare? Nora had expected this scare to be fun. A nice little treat in the torment of her own current personal life. Instead all she got was a sad sad man who offered nothing except wanting to be sad. Nora slammed the door behind her, letting the illusions all drop as she walked away. In the distance she could hear sirens on their way to this location. Nora wondered where they were headed as she made her way back to the crypt. She’d try scaring Elias another day. Maybe he’d be more fun.

https://twitter.com/SamHeughan/status/1499525792451432451?s=20&t=KH9_8JE1xbPsurz81mfr8Q
Mais adiante houve um podcast com uma moça dizendo que foi abordada por Sam no Raya, e que desistiu porque foi um convite pra pap walk e jantar, menos o jantar.
Aqui está o link:
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/deux-u/id1604255499?i=1000562467891
Dear (returning) Damage Control Anon,
Obrigada por este longo comentário que irei traduzir imediatamente, antes de responder. E desculpe pelo feedback tardio.
You write:
'It took me some time to find all the links, but maybe it would be helpful and bring some background context for that period in 2022, when Sam and Cait were both officially in the US. Posting is totally up to you, of course.
Look at Steven Cree's answer to that innocuous tweet. It's nothing, but looking back at it... https://twitter.com/SamHeughan/status/1499525792451432451?s=20&t=KH9_8JE1xbPsurz81mfr8Q
Later on, there was a podcast with a girl saying that she was approached by Sam on Raya, and that she backed out because it was an invitation to a pap walk and dinner, minus the dinner.
Here is the link: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/deux-u/id1604255499?i=1000562467891
It aired two or three months after Gareth's video but, in my opinion, it fits into the same moment in the narrative. The girl is talking about something that happened in the recent past.
Marple commented on the matter in May 2022. She herself admits that Sam was systematically canceling dates and suggests that the pap walk with Monika Clarke was staged.
I agree with you, I don't believe it's Sam in these photos.
But another detail catches my attention: isn't it funny that someone always attracted to young, pneumatic blondes was so interested in tall brunettes with big breasts, at that time?
If I were Tony I would have been quite uncomfortable.'
Ok, let's develop a bit, here.
Looking back at that March 2022 tweet, Cree's comment reads like this:
Tumblr media
That answer is a cheeky allusion at Dua Lipa's hit 'One kiss', and younger (or better informed) fans immediately cued in with the rest of the lyrics ('possibilities' comes to mind). To me, it's just the usual banter between these two, bearing in mind that Cree, the clown, knows a fair share of SC secrets. C was not amused by Dua being around, that we know for sure: #behave and that death stare immediately made me snort.
Podcast Girl is Monica Aksamit, the (in)famous fencer of the Fitness Harem. I resolutely refuse to listen one more time to that crap, because one of my New Year Resolutions is to not give undue space anymore to that particular brand of the shitshow. It is very clear that was a botched attempt to consolidate The Golden Dirk mystique, exclusively aimed at the Onlies. In her case, the encounter of demand and offer simply did not happen and the deal fell through. And I have to say I am not interested at all in whatever Marple has to say about it, simply because that woman has zero credibility in my book: she is just a pathetic troll, with no sense of humor and a penchant for verbal violence, on par with her lying abilities. I am not ready to forget her attempts at ridiculing me and I hope you will understand my position.
As for big breasted brunettes, I won't comment further. Aksamit did not, however, strike me as particularly well endowed in that department, to be honest.
Finally... Tony, who? Forget it, Anon, he is not into girls.
Thank you for the effort to put two and two together. I wish you all the best for 2024!
[Edit]: I am told the Raya girl is not the washboard breasted Aksamit, but a certain Paige Woolen. Who is well endowed in that department and probably also a p0rn whatever... I mean, what's in a name...?
Ok. Over and out. I will just jump in my car and pray for a smooth ride on the highway.

So...... Erwin went all that trouble to get Levi, even risking his own life knowing how dangerous Levi is, and....... to do what exactly? What did he actually gain? Because every time it feels like Levi can make a huge difference, he's not there. The plot always pushes him out of the story. He's only allowed to come back when our main characters are truly cornered and instead of creating a plot hole or weakening the storytelling by "conveniently" saving them, Yams uses his OP captain to save the day and then pulls a "my job here is done" act & disappear. It feels like Levi didn't really live up to Erwin's expectations or at least how he imagined to use his strength because was Levi even useful to Erwin's plans?
What did Erwin actually gain from Levi?  This.
Tumblr media
Levi doesn’t just contribute his strength to Erwin’s cause by fighting, he also provides stability and support. Agreed, there are numerous times when Levi swoops in to save the day with his extraordinary speed and strength, but more often than not his most important role is to inspire courage and resolve in others, whether it’s Historia, Hanji, Gabi, the 104th, or Erwin himself.  Levi is a constant; he embodies the spirit and the heart of the Survey Corps and the cause that their fallen comrades died for.  He is there to remind them what they are fighting for and to give them the strength to keep fighting.
Erwin himself explains this beautifully in the Smartpass Close-Up Interview:
Erwin: Starting with Levi…I think he is excellent at shouldering important duties. With the title “Humanity’s Strongest” as part of the SC, our reputations have also been elevated. On the battlefield, he has also faithfully completed the tasks I have assigned to him. Despite his warmhearted nature, I’ve asked him to carry out some cruel missions… Journalist: Is Captain Levi very…”warmhearted?” E: You’ve already interviewed his subordinates, right? Then you must have heard just how much they trust their captain. J: Indeed. I even heard the same thing from new recruits who are not from his squad. E: He just has a rude attitude…but he cherishes his comrades’ life more than anyone else. His reputation cannot be established based on strength alone, Humans can subconsciously detect how much concern others have for them… and when they notice this kindness, it inspires power…That is something that I can’t do.
You ask if Levi was even useful to Erwin’s plans. My question would be how far would Erwin have got with his plans if he hadn’t had Levi by his side?  Levi was his most trusted comrade, his steadfast right-hand man and, perhaps more importantly, his friend. He helped Erwin to bear the weight of all the lives lost under his command, and of the dream that drove him to the point of despair.  And when it all became too much to bear, when Erwin faltered and almost succumbed to guilt and despair in Shiganshina, Levi was there to lift that burden and to help Erwin to summon the courage to sacrifice his own life for Humanity.  That is Levi’s real strength.

SWAMP RABBITS ANSWER BACK IN GAME 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eberle nets game-winner; three multi-point performers shine in win  BY: Mark Binetti, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, SC—Tanner Eberle broke a deadlock in a wild third period to headline the Greenville Swamp Rabbits' Game 2 win over the Orlando Solar Bears by a 4-2 score on Monday night. The win for the Swamp Rabbits splits the series at 1-1 heading into the next three games in Orlando this weekend. Both teams repeated Game 1 and skated scoreless through 20 minutes of play. Jacob Ingham manned the net again for Greenville and staved away only four shots on the net, while Evan Fitzpatrick turned away 15 in the opening frame. The deadlock was finally broken by the Swamp Rabbits, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes. Josh McKechney started off the scoring when he slammed a Colton Young effort in close range of the net past Fitzpatrick to push the Swamp Rabbits ahead 1-0 at 2:28 (Young and Quinn Olson assisted, the latter earning his first professional point). Following the goal, the Swamp Rabbits penalty kill was tested, and a five-minute major was needed to kill off due to an elbowing penalty assessed to Bobby Russell. The Swamp Rabbits thwarted the effort and followed it with a power play goal of their own, the only one in the series thus far. With 8:33 left in the second, Carter Souch, on the team's second power play, took a Sam Jardine pass on the left side of the zone and rifled a shot over Fitzpatrick's shoulder to double the Swamp Rabbits lead at 2-0 (Jardine and McKechney assisted). The Solar Bears stormed out of the gate to start the third, tying the game at two in the blink of an eye during a wild scoring exchange. Brayden Low got Orlando on the board when he deflected a Jimmy Mazza shot past Ingham at 2:09 of the third, slashing the Greenville lead to 2-1 (Mazza and Aaron Luchuk assisted). Exactly 1:36 later, Spencer Kersten maneuvered the puck in close range of the Swamp Rabbits' net and redirected it off of his body and by Ingham to square the game at 2-2 at 3:45 of the third (Darik Angeli and Alex Frye assisted). Ingham was replaced in net by Luke Richardson for the Swamp Rabbits, who didn't allow anything behind him for the remainder of the game. The switch kicked the Swamp Rabbits in gear: 51 seconds later, Carter Souch found Tanner Eberle streaking to the back of the net, resulting in a backdoor tap-in for the veteran to put Greenville ahead for good, 3-2 at 4:36 (Souch and Nick Prkusic assisted). Eberle's tally ended a scoring run of three goals between teams over 2:27 of hockey in the third. Adding insurance for Greenville was Quinn Olson, who batted the puck out of mid-air on a skilled maneuver late in the game past Fitzpatrick to push the Swamp Rabbits ahead at 4-2, bringing the game to its final score (Anthony Beauchamp and Josh McKechney assisted). In relief, Luke Richardson picked up his first career postseason win, stopping all 11 shots he saw in 16:15 of work (1-0-0). Jacob Ingham started for Greenville and turned aside 10 of 12 in 43:42 game time. The Swamp Rabbits shift the series to Orlando for Game 3 on Friday night, April 26th. Puck drop at the Kia Center is slated for 7:00 p.m. EST. About the Greenville Swamp Rabbits … Acquired by Spire Sports + Entertainment (SS+E) in 2020, the Greenville Swamp Rabbits hockey team has been providing family-friendly, live entertainment at Bon Secours Wellness Arena since 2010. DETAILS AROUND THE INDIRA GANDHI ASSASSINATION - THAT NOT EVEN THE GHANDY FAMILY, IN HIGHEST POWER FOR LONG SINCE, MYSTERIOUSLY TRIED KNOWING OR TELLING PUBLIC MORE ABOUT.
All India's been told-Indira Gandhi was assassinated by 2 of her own Sikh security men, for ordering firing inside Golden Temple in Amritsar, & hanged. But what's conveniently been hidden from everyone is- 1. Both security guards, from Delhi Police, had a very bad track record of unsubordination & breaking discipline, with high level departmental inquiries against them,& even before it,declared unfit for serving to protect PM. Yet mysteriously kept in PM's inner security circle, moreover allowed upto months holiday in hometowns in Punjab when anti-Indira radicalization was at it's peak,& allowed back on duty, w/o any updated background checks. Furthermore, the one-member Thakkar Commission of serving SC Judge & ex Gujarat CJ Thakkar,in his inquiries, per leaks from no lesser than journo Shekhar Gupta in his India Today magazine then, was told by the one surviving assailant Satnam Singh (Beant killed by firing from security, that Satnam survived) that he was ordered by Beant to not hurt Indira's personal secy R.K.Dhawan walking behind, as "he has helped us a lot". 2. Dhawan'd postponed PM's appointments by 15 mins, this per investigation analysis being most convenient for allowing the 2 attackers to converge on PM together on some pretext. Dhawan's excuses in it all being that PM'd always postpone her home appointments each time came from state visit. But just 15 mins each time? Strange. Further how Beant was removed but twas PM who had him reinstated as'd look politically bad. But begs qun-Which media ever covers such deep inner security stories,to have been any chance of a political story? Also, which PM ignores deeply -ve character certificates of her deep inner security, merely for political imagery, that too imaginary? Dhawan further states,Beant was O-ve,& since Indira was also O -ve,made sense to keep him around. But O-ve IS FIRST & MOST EASILY AVAILABLE BLOOD GROUP,IN ANY SMALL OR BIG HOSPITAL,ANYWAY,BEING UNIVERSAL DONOR TYPE! 3. Further,Beant's elder son found to just've gotten admitted at big very expensive public school, with one yr's fees paid in advance! Which meager security guy can afford this!?It's clear, big pockets behind it for a while, not just few random Sikhs. Beant's wife too btw says Beant was close to Dhawan. 4. Yet,Thakker report only presented to Parliament, several yrs after release,by Rajiv, that too in small inconsequential bits. Dhawan btw promoted to Cabinet Min within decade! 5.When SIT head parallelly investigating, met Rajiv,& disapproved of his non-coop,Rajiv asks him to write book on it instead,& when tries,is denied all investigation papers. This per SIT head's own book. 6.Bhopal Gas Tragedy happens in Dec 1984,Rajiv allows Anderson exit to US,& visits US next yr,as their new fav! And all's forgotten! 1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAJfnsHia_U 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcL95VOT6jY
Is it true, that India under PM Indira, (as alleged by few herein), let Golden Temple turn into fortified military base in '84 at hands of the Punjab separatists, by allowing free flow of weaponry in by Dec '83, for it trying to keep it's feet in both boats, one of Indian estt & other of a secret world club bearing 'Khalistani' membership?
(39-40')https://youtube.com/watch?v=S7jF1n0TQCA
Was #OperationBlueStar the result of a near-impossible venture to keep both the Gods & the Devils happy at the same time?! So to say, were Indira's murders connected to the secret Intl mafia network, the Freemasons, that via British Raj has had it's tentacles deeply hooked into Indian top hierarchy, including some of the most shocking names atop, since the 19th c. ?!
Who else were these perpetrators that seemingly had Indira's inner coterie so entrenched, as well as having minutest details of her killer's family's long-term future so well carved out, as also that even Indira's own blood family were so seemingly scared to pursue??!

These little cuties are shown here with full size candy canes. I have come up with a couple creative options (1 crochet, 1 with beads) that I will share soon and update in the patterns ❤️.

SKSKSLS EJDNEKSBEKS YES
OMG YES
I’m so glad you asked for them LMAO-
I literally love MikeNana so much. They are the ultimate couple and I so believe they are actually canon.
Okay anyways I hope you like! Sorry I’m not being as professional as I usually am. We have a snow storm coming in (I live in the south) so my brain is all kinds of jumbled right now.

Starting gaining an interest in Nanaba when he got her scent
He thought she smelt the best out of everyone at the survey corps-
Mike is a pretty weird ass dude but nanaba treated him like any other normal human and he appreciated that alot
Loves to shower her with gifts of things he makes, such as his own handmade flower bouquets.
Has a very “sensitive” love towards nanaba
Mike only ever ate his mothers food but when he meant nanaba and tasted her cooking, he now only eats her cooking
He dreams of owning a dog sanctuary with her and raising multiple dogs there
One time Nanaba caught him talking in his sleep about his wedding vows to her
Honestly the mans can’t wait to give her his last name
He just adores her and wants to be partnered with her so bad it’s not even funny-
When they have days off together, he makes a meal and surprises her each time with having a picnic at a different place
He loves to do art things with her and actually taught Nanaba how to paint-
10/10 has painted a portrait of her. More like multiple-
He doesn’t like to fight Nanaba with his full force because she looks so frail and gentle to him and doesn’t want to hurt her
She could give less of a shit about how strong he acts when he fights Her
But he is a giant ass teddy bear anyways so-
Mike acts super emotionless in public but he is super needy towards nanaba
Like he’s a very emotional human with horrible attachment issues
Nanaba doesn’t mind though, she deals with it and still loves him regardless
He is always the big spoon-
When he is feeling passionate, Mike likes to top her and overstimulate her to the point she sc r e a m s-
Overall he is a very passionate person in bed. And nanaba l o v e s this. He makes sure all of her needs are meant and praises her for every little she does
He loves to kiss every single part of her. Like e v e r y part.
They have been dating for years. Ever since she first came to the survey corps and he was an elite cadet.
Like they were smitten way before he was a captain-
Anyways- Mike makes sure to tell her that he loves her every single night before they go to bed
Also they sleep in the same bed and have been doing so for the past year
They have only ever gotten into one fight and it was when Mike accidentally shaved a line down his head and had a giant bald line in the middle of his head
Nanaba scolded him about being a fucking idiot and he got upsetti
But they worked it out and just shaved the entire head to let it grow back out evenly.
Yet he constantly bickers with her about seasoning in food and it makes them sound like an old married couple-
_________________________________
Nanaba
Tumblr media
She spends a lot of time reading books about food with Mike
Is a lot more emotionless than Mike and has different ways of showing her love
When Mike isn’t feeling as passionate as usual, she tops THE FUCK out of him-
Like she gets a g g r e s s i v e and Mike loves it
Nanaba makes sure they have at least one cup of tea together each day
Although Mike is more emotional, Nanaba gets stressed very easily and this causes her to have bad social anxiety
Because of her social anxiety she tries to avoid loud public places, so Mike makes sure they go to quiet towns and villages whenever they go for picnics
Mike also has social anxiety, which comforts Nanaba because it makes her feel like she isn’t alone
Nanaba L O V E S to dress him up- like she uses him as her own practice doll and he doesn’t mind one bit
She does makeup on him to practice and see if she likes the look before doing it on herself
In exchange for Mike doing her hair since she can’t cut it worth shit, she gives him the best goddamn blowjobs known to man
She also adds extra seasoning when cooking for Mike
Nanaba agreed to have a dog farm with Mike if they can have at least two children
Although she isn’t good with emotions, children make her heart go soft like Mike does so she really wants more children in her life by having her own
Mike painted a concept of what their kid would look like and it made her get the worst case of baby fever-
Plays the piano to serenade Mike
She nudges his hand with her head to show she wants her back to be rubbed when they are laying down together
Although it makes Mike annoyed, Nanaba loves to bite on his chest very gently and leave hickeys
It’s just satisfying to her-
She wears only soft fragrances that are fruity or clean so that it doesn’t hurt mikes nose
Her hair is always super silky and layered, which Mike loves to play with
One time nanaba accidentally shaved off half her eyebrow and she cried about it- so Mike shaved off half his eyebrow to make her feel better 🥺
Honestly that’s when nanaba knew she would marry him lmfao-
If they lived in a modern world, Nanaba would totally be a photographer and constantly take blurry asethetic photos of Mike doing something dumb like wearing fairy wings
She wants to have a private wedding with him, only the closest of friends invited
Would be the one to have to comfort Mike during a scary movie
Would be the nerdiest of the two-
And would probably force Mike to reenact Reylo scenes-
Loves candles so much, and it’s her biggest turn on to have in bed. Mike knows this and uses this to his advantage-
She’s very elegant/proper and Mike likes that about her. They both hold themselves to standards of people to be, so they relate to each other in that way
She also doesn’t like to show PDA besides holding hands when in town. Otherwise they keep their romance very secretive
100% have bickered about the wrong and right shampoos to use on their dogs, but usually nanaba just gives up because of how mikes nagging can be when it comes to animals

Fresh Start
A story about Sally Williams finding a new home with an- odd pair of men. Fun fact but I’ve rewritten this story twice because I couldn’t decide on how to write this- I wanted it to be as good as possible and I think I’m happy with this version.
Word count: 1651
Laughing Jack hummed softly to himself as he quietly played his accordion. He had no song in mind, it was just aimless chords without meaning. It was dark now, the sun had gone down, and there was nobody in the park save for some teens or late night joggers.
Looking down at his accordion, he realised someone was watching him. He looked to the side to meet the bright, green eyes watching him. The eyes belonged to a girl, who could only be about ten years old, wearing a pink dress. She had messy brown hair that fell in curls just past her shoulders. He smiled at her.
"Well 'ello there." He greeted. "Can I 'elp ya, kiddo?"
"...I like your music." She said softly. He smiled and tilted his head.
"I recognize ya," he said. "Weren' you wiv th' other kids earlier, when I was givin' ou' balloons?"
She nodded and held up the balloon dog Jack had made for her earlier. She smiled, just a little bit. He chuckled.
"Wha're ye doin' down 'ere so la'e, Sally? Shouldn' ye be a' 'ome wiv yer ma an' da?" He asked. Sally's smile dropped and she looked at the ground. Jack frowned. "...'ave ya...go' a ma an' da?"
Sally sniffled. Jack watched tears fall from her eyes. He scooted up the bench and patted the space next to him. "Ey, i's alrigh', come ta Jackie." He said softly. Sally climbed onto the bench next to him, holding her balloon animal and an old stuffed bear. She hugged both of them tight as she cried quietly. Jack wrapped an arm around the girl and pet her head. "Shh, i's alrigh', Jackie's 'ere."
Sally snuggled close against him, her crying getting louder. The clown hugged her tight, rubbing circles into her back. The poor girl- she felt deathly cold, and so small- though that could've just been that Jack was very tall.
Sally buried her face in Jack's shirt. He smelled of lavender and the rain. The smell was a small comfort. As she cried Jack could only watch in horror as a bloody gash formed in her head. Blood trickled down her face and through her beautiful brown hair. He reached into his puffy sleeve and pulled out a rag. He wiped blood from her face the best he could.
Sally probably wasn't human like he'd initially thought.
"Do ya 'ave anywhere ta go, kiddo?" He asked softly.
"I-I can go h-home but- my mo- my mom and d-dad moved aw-away." She managed to say in between sobs. Jack nodded slowly. "The n-ne-new people c-call me sc-scary." Her sobbing got more intense as she spoke. Jack hugged her tighter.
"Well tha's no' very nice…" He murmured. He stared down at her. He couldn't just leave this girl alone. Human or not, it wasn't right to leave a child alone in a park all night and day. It went against the very reason he existed. "E-Ey kiddo, 'ow abou' ye stay wiv me fer t'night?" He asked. Sally sniffled and looked up at him. "Wouldja like tha'?"
"Okay." She replied oh so softly. Her voice was barely above a whisper. Jack scooped her up into his arms and held her close. He adjusted the strap on his accordion so it hung off his back rather than front, and stood up.
"Ya like piggy-back rides?" He asked with a small grin. Sally seemed to brighten up a bit. She nodded, and Jack lifted her up onto his shoulders. "Now ya can see th' whole park." He chirped. Sally sniffled and grinned down at the clown.
                                                       ××××××
"Jack? Where are we going?" Sally asked. Jack had walked halfway across town and was now casually sauntering through a building site near the edge of the forest.
"Hm? Oh! I live in th' woods, wiv a frien'." Jack smiled up at her.
"A friend?"
"Yeh! 'Is name's Slender. 'E's a bi' grumpy, bu' you'll like 'im." Jack replied. "Don' tell 'im I said this, bu' 'e 'as a sof' spo' fer kids."
Sally looked down at the clown curiously. "Will he like me?" She asked.
"Will 'e like ya?" He asked incredulously. "Of course 'e will! Slen loves kiddos, almos' as much as I do." Jack grinned up at her. "Th' two of us are gonna be fussin' over ya nigh' an’ day."
He made his way deep into the forest, with Sally clinging close to him. Jack patted her head reassuringly. Poor thing- he could tell why she'd be scared, being taken into the woods by someone she didn't know well after...well he didn't exactly know what had happened to her, but he knew it couldn't be good. Luckily, they soon came upon a clearing. Sitting in the middle of it was a large house. It was practically a castle to Sally.
"Tha's our gaf." Jack said, pointing.
"It's so big…" Sally murmured. Jack smiled.
"Sure is! Plen'y o' room fer ya t' run aroun'." He chirped. He walked to the door and opened it. Stepping inside, Sally stared around the giant living room. There was a couch, a couple armchairs, a very primitive tv, even by 70s standards and...well, not much else. The house seemed to be empty.
"Slen, I'm 'ome." Jack called out as he walked towards a door next to the couch.. He grabbed Sally from his shoulders and held her against his chest instead as he opened the door. The girl looked around quickly, green eyes shining curiously.
"Oh, Ja-" standing in the kitchen was a tall man in a suit. His skin was completely white, and his proportions were so unnatural- his arms and legs were far too long for anyone to realistically have. The thing that freaked Sally out the most, however, was his face, or rather- his lack of one. Sally clung tighter to Jack, staring in horror as this monster in front of her stared right back. In a movement too smooth and quick for any person, he crossed the room. "Jack, who is that?"
"This is Sally! Ain't she a righ' cu'e basin o' gravy?" Jack chirped back, adjusting his hold on Sally.
"Jack, you can't just take random children! Especially here! Now she'll know about everyone living in these woods and tell all the other children and-" Slender's angry and panicked rant was cut off by Jack extending an arm and placing his index finger where Slender's lips would be.
"Cool i', china pla'e. I didn' 'alf inch 'er because she's cu'e, if ye're finkin' tha'." Jack replied. His accent seemed to thicken while talking to Slender. "She 'asn't go' anywhere ta go. 'Er ma an' da are gone."
Slender was quiet for a few moments before sighing. He rubbed his featureless face in irritation. "Alright, alright…" He looked from Jack to Sally. He tilted his head at her. "Well- hello Sally, I suppose you're staying with us for now." He said, softer this time. Sally still flinched away from him.
"Ah, don' be scared o' 'im, Slen wouldn' 'ur' a 'air on yer 'ead." Jack said, rubbing Sally's back soothingly. He grinned at his friend. "Ain' tha' righ', Slen?"
Slender seemed to become distressed for a moment and he stepped away from Jack and Sally. "Oh I'm- I'm sorry I should've assumed you'd be scared...I always forget about that-" he glanced away nervously for a moment. He held out a hand to Sally. "I'm Slender. It's a pleasure to meet you, little one. I- apologize for the bad first impression, Jack can be...impulsive, at times."
Jack muttered something to himself and rolled his eyes. Sally looked at him and smiled, then at Slender's hand. She hesitated, then reached out to shake it. Her entire hand was barely bigger than Slender's palm. After she pulled away from the handshake she heard Jack chuckle, and she looked up at the clown.
"Ye okay, Slen?"
"Small…"
Jack barked a laugh and reached out, patting Slender's shoulder. "Ye big softie." He murmured affectionately. Slender shot him a look and adjusted his tie, trying to regain his composure. Sally giggled at the two of them.
"How old are you, dear?"
"Ten." Sally replied. Slender made an- odd- noise that made Jack snicker.
"God she's only a toddler-"
"Ten year ol's aren' toddlers, Slen." Laughing Jack said. Slender ignored him.
"Can we get you anything, Sally? A drink? Are you hungry?" He asked. Sally smiled shyly at all the attention. Sure her parents had treated her like a princess but this? This was the kind of fawning only a queen got.
"Toast would be nice." She said. "And- warm milk…?"
Slender, despite his lack of face, seemed to radiate happiness. "Of course!" He chirped maybe a bit too eagerly. He turned and quickly moved to the fridge, pulling out some bread and a carton of milk.
Sally watched him curiously as Jack moved to the dining table and took a seat. Sally was dropped into his lap. She looked up at him while he rubbed her cheek with the back of a finger. Sally hugged her bear and balloon animal as she looked around.
"Does anyone else live here?" She asked. Jack shook his head.
"Nah." He replied. "We've always wan'ed more though...lo'sa kiddos runnin' aroun' th' gaf, like a big ol' fam'ly." The clown smiled down at Sally.
"What's a gaf?" Sally asked. Jack wheezed in amusement.
"A 'gaf' is a house," Slender said. "I only understand him because I've known him too long." He added, nodding his head at the clown. Jack grinned at Slender.
"Ah, ye luv me." He said. Slender squinted at him.
"Well that's news to me."
Jack wheezed again, cackling loudly in amusement. Sally giggled in his lap. She liked these two, as strange as they were. Maybe- just maybe- this could be a fresh start. She'd like that.

Valentine Dilemma (Yuuto x reader)
Tumblr media
Ah the month of love or loneliness, February. The time where partners celebrate their love, the time when it’s the best chance to convey hidden feelings, and also the worst time to be alone. But for a young boy named Yuuto, it’s one of the most stressful things in his life. Not because he has to plan how to confess his feelings, but the dread that someone else might do it before him. After going online to look for inspiration on how to make the month special for (Y/N), he came across a thread that focused on valentines from the past.
One person expressed their sorrow about them planning too much to the point that their surprise ended in vain when they found the person of their affection being confessed to by another. Sadly accepting the other person’s feelings and leaving the poster to spend a sad night alone. Another had planned too little and had been outdone by another with a more grand display of love. Someone else even ranted about how their love letter ended up in the wrong locker and having to deal with an awkward misunderstanding.
After spending a night filling his head with horrific and sad stories of unrequited love, the white haired boy’s head filled up with a thousand responsibilities on how his surprise could end up a failure.
A sigh left the boy’s lips as he twirled the light pink mechanical pencil in between his fingers. A clean sheet of paper in front of him, it mocked him with it’s blank state. Wanting to make a very special surprise for you, Yuuto had to leave right after school and sacrifice his time with you to come up for an idea for Valentine’s day. He had many ideas on what he could do, but the reason why he didn’t jot any of them down is due to the fear of them ending up a disaster.
First, he came up with the idea of making you homemade chocolates. He thought it would be nice to decorate a big heart with different designs with the words “Will you be mine?” but the idea seemed too cliche. The idea had also made him flush a deep red for how embarrassing the idea was. So, he scrapped it and thought up of another. A date with just the both of you at the movies, it’s a casual idea and he thought it would be a good way to just be able to sit next to you. But the only available movies in theaters were…not really romantic. They’re anything but romantic and he wasn’t so sure on inviting you to a movie about a talking blue hedgehog.
Making an album full of photos containing you was a good idea at first, but he realized that he had none of himself to pair with yours. He had only taken photos of you during school on his digital camera or phone, but only of you. He never took any of himself because he isn’t the most handsome guy. Also, whenever you would want to take a photo with him, the closeness of the both of you would make him blush and love around. Ruining the photo and him cropping himself out of it. He would never delete them though. You’re very photogenic and whatever picture he took of you came out amazing, but if he was in it… it would become blurred or it the camera had caught him making a weird face. While he would love another album full of your smiles, he knew that you wouldn’t really want an album full of just you without any friends or family.
Bringing you to a nice dinner was another, but he wasn’t sure on what restaurant to go to. Taking you to the local lookout to see the stars with you under the night sky was a close one. But when he had checked the weather forecast for the 14th, it was going to be too cloudy. Whatever idea he came up with, every single one of them had a flaw. So, he came up with a plan. Not wanting you to suspect him of anything. Yuuto decided to help out with the school’s Valentine’s day event to figure out the best gift for you.
——————————–
Walking into school, you sigh at the sight of the various red, pink, and white decorations that cover the halls. It’s your senior year and you’re still single. Hanging your head down low, you trudge across the floor. Where ever you look, students are carrying balloons, roses, stuffed animals, and even one kid is carrying around a giant poster with a blowed up picture of some girl.
As you go over to your locker, a small red card with the words “Happy Valentine’s day!” is scribbled across it, but you’re unfazed by it for how all the other lockers around you have the exact same card or something similar taped to their lockers. The same thing happens every year and you know this because it’s your senior year in high school. You experienced the same thing every Valentine’s Day and you even used to help out the student council by making some. cards for students.
Taking the piece of paper, you open it up to find it containing a valentines pun. It’s not really special so you toss it into your locker and you notice how empty it is. A gasp comes from your right, shifting your eyes to the right, a girl that looks to be younger than you has her hands up to her mouth.
A pile of cards is stacked inside her locker and a couple fall out from how unstable the stack it. A small pang of pain hits your heart as you envy her. Not because she got a lot of cards-well yes that’s one of the reasons, but also because of how she also received cards from her friends. As she closes her locker, you can see that it’s decorated with small post-it notes with cute small messages signed from her friends.
“Happy Valentine’s Day stinky >:)” and “You’re my butter half” with a drawing of a stick of butter cut in two are just a couple of the things you see on her locker. You find it sweet that her friends did that for her and it doesn’t mean that you don’t have friends. You just know that they’re lazy about doing stuff for the holiday, but it would’ve been nice to at least have a greeting from them. But you didn’t prepare anything special either so you can’t really complain.
You take your notebooks out for your classes for the day. When you close your locker, you turn to leave but you abruptly bump your head into a pink mass. Taking a step back, you rub your forehead to soothe the sore area. The thing, animal, or whoever it is waves their hands frantically. Trying to figure out whoever is in front of you. You take a step back to fully see who it is since they’re taller than you.
“Ha?” You furrow your brows at the thing before you. Someone dressed up in a pink bear suit holding heart shaped balloons.
The person tenses up and gives you a robotic wave. They seem nervous.
You wave back to them and excuse yourself as you awkwardly walk around them to go to your first class. While you focus on making your way through the obstacles of couples standing annoyingly in the middle of the hallway, the pink mascot watches you leave their vision.
Throughout the rest of the day, something strange keeps happening to you. Where ever you go, you would find that same pink bear. When you went to your first period. It was there to help with someone confessing their love by holding up a sign as a guy gave his crush a bouquet of roses. In your second period, it was handing out valentine’s day cards from anonymous senders addressed to their valentine’s. During your free period, you would find it peeking behind the corner and you could clearly see it. Everyone could, but some people would run up to it asking for its assistance in summing up the courage to confess to their special someone. While you were walking to your next class orto the bathroom, you could see it being dragged around the school. But every single time, it would always be looking at you.
When lunch came, you found out that that the bear was actually something the student council came up with. A mascot for the holiday to help promote events and students to express their feelings. Anyone could send in a request to ask for help from the pink friend. Some teachers who are married even had its help in sending gifts to their partners on the other side of the campus or to the office. You think I it’s a cute idea, but you’re more curious about who would take up such a role.
Running around the school in a big pink suit must be exhausting and it seems like only the same person is wearing the suit. Maybe one of the more athletic kids are doing it? They would be better suited to do such a thing, but you’re just guessing. It’s not one of the janitors since you could clearly see them going around the school fixing up decorations and brushing away excess confetti and trash littering the hallways. The members in the student council are certainly not it because they’re too busy doing the requests and there’s not that much for them. You do have hunch though as to whom it might be. You haven’t seen any of your close friends and you know that o e of them has a crush on one of the SC members. So you have a feeling that they might’ve offered their help. Which is nice of them, but it left you alone during lunch since your other friends seem to be missing as well.
——————————–
As everyone rushes to get home, you put away your things in your locker. While the day had been hectic, it was interesting to see the different surprises everyone did. Though you just wished that someone would’ve at least greeted you. Some teachers did, but they don’t count in your book.
Slamming your locker shut, you’re about to head out to leave but you once again find the pink mascot peeking over a corner while facing your direction. But instead of ducking out of view from you, they signal you to come closer. Feeling bored, you do so and walk over to it. They offer you their hand or paw, you aren’t sure since it looks just like a big mitten but you take it. As you’re led away, you’re taken to small random destinations throughout the school. The first spot is your homeroom. No one is inside, but on your desk is a small pink rabbit plush with a red ribbon tied around its neck.
The person in the costume walks over to it and hands it to you. You take it and give it a small squeeze. Its soft plush fur rubs against your cheek and it’s pleasant to the touch. You admire how cute and huggable it is, but the bear offers you their paw again. Now with a small stuffed animal in your other hand, you take their paw again to be led to another place.
In the cafeteria you found a big heart shaped sign with sweet messages from your friends. Near the girl’s bathroom, you found a gift basket with face masks, shampoos, scented candles, and other toiletries for you to use. In the hallway in front of your locker, a bouquet of pink, red, and white roses and carnations laid waiting for you. Everywhere you went, something was waiting for you and with every gift. You’re surprised everytime with something different. Cards, more stuffed animals, keychains, chocolates, and other gifts were scattered around the school waiting for you.
In the areas that had more people, they would actually not touch the gifts because a member from the student council would watch over it until you and the bear arrived. At one point there were too many gifts so the person in the suit had to bring over a red wagon so your arms would be free from the various gifts you received.
The last place you were lead to was the roof, which made you really surprised since no one is really allowed on the roof except staff and the janitors when they need to throw back down stray volleyballs and baseballs for the sports teams.
While you’re carefully lead to the side of the building facing the open free area in the middle of your school, the bear faces towards you. They take off the head of the costume, and you can’t really tell who it is. Panting heavily from exhaustion with fogged up goggles, a white surgical mask, and messy white hair in all directions. You try to hold in your laughter as the person struggles to take off the equipment. Their hair bad gotten tangled to their goggles and you had to help free them, but they would try and still you for some reason.
You persist in trying to take if off of them while they stutter over how sweaty they are and how you’ll feel icky after touching their hair. But you do it anyway. As you take off the surgical mask, you can see their lips had gotten a dry. Telling them to wait a moment, you take out a chap stick you got in one of the gifts that you received and put it over their lips. You smile as you hear them nervously stutter out a small “Thank you” When you take off their goggles, you can see the red ruby eyes you love so much.
White strands of hair cling to Yuuto’s face as you help wipe off the sweat that accumulated underneath his bangs all the while as a deep blush scatters across his cheeks.
“Ah I’m so sorry (Y/N)…” Yuuto says, you brush a strand of his hear behind his ear as you wipe the side of his cheek with a clean napkin, “I didn’t expect that to happen and I was going to take off all that stuff before hand before bringing you up here but uhm, I forgot to do it earlier…”
“What’re you apologizing for? I don’t mind helping you at all especially since you’ve been running around school all day. Also,” you pinch his cheek slightly, “You need to rely on others more! You’re crazy for not taking any breaks! I even saw you help the janitors clean up that huge chocolate cake that someone dropped in the hallway!”
“B-But they needed my help…and I couldn’t take a break!”
You quick a brow at his statement, “Hm and why is that?”
With a small sigh, Yuuto takes off the mittens covering his hands. Taking a hold of yours into his, “I-I wanted to make this day special for you, but I couldn’t come up with the right surprise for you…so I asked the student council if they could help me with any ideas and they proposed that I should be the helper mascot on Valentines day to get some inspiration. I got carried away though and no one else could do it so…”
“You got stuck in helping out all day?”
He let’s out a small nervous laugh, “Yeah…but you know. You mean so much to me and…” his hold tightens a bit, “And I have so much love for you but there’s not enough ways that I can express just how much you’re always on my mind. So I ordered a bunch of gifts for you and your friends helped me out too! Each place we visited, are places I have found memories of you (Y/N).”
You feel a bit confused, “But we went went through the whole school.”
“Ah haha… that’s because I got carried away. Every time I see you, hear your voice, and feel your touch is special to me. That’s why I took you all around the school and I even got extra gifts for you for all the people that I helped…but I want you to know that, I love you (Y/N)! You always cloud up my thoughts and I can never stop thinking about you and I-”
Before Yuuto finishes his sentence, you plant a kiss on his lips. It was quick, but it was enough to leave the boy left in awe and you smile.
“I’m thankful that you think of me that way, but next time don’t overwork yourself okay?”
“O-Okay, I promise!”
Yuuto engulfs you into a hug and you almost stumble over. You laugh as you feel him nuzzle his face into your neck, but you’re startled by the sound of cheering from down below. Looking towards the opening area, you can see other people cheering and your friends int he center giving you a thumbs up. You can see that a bunch of them have their phones out. They recorded the whole thing…
You can feel your cheeks heat up as you hide your face into Yuuto’s shoulder from the crowd. You feel embarrassed that that the whole exchange was recorded, but you’re also happy that someone would go this far for you.

2020 in books!
the only kind of new year’s resolution i made as a naive baby last january was to try to read 40 books for the year. (i read 37 in 2019, for context.) well, with all of my commuting time eliminated and an increased need for immersive escapism, i ended up surpassing that goal three times over lmao (thanks library ebooks!)
idk how to summarize my year in books in a way that makes sense but
(f) = fiction, (nf) = nonfiction, (p) = poetry.
books that rewired my fucking brain:
braiding sweetgrass by robin wall kimmerer (nf)- GOD?!?!?! good. dr. k is right. ostensibly a book about plants, but actually a book about shut up and go outside. consumerism and capitalism are doing their damnedest to fuck you up, but you can just choose to value different things. take care of yourself by taking care of your environment. etc etc.
wasp by richard jones (nf)- lissen. when i got this book, my wasp-phobia was so severe that i had to put it away face down on a high shelf because there are wasps on the cover and i couldn’t bear to RISK even GLIMPSING them. now i am like... a wasp evangelist. (also due to the bugs 101 course on coursera it’s so good.)
wag by zazie todd (nf)- i have a dog, but i am NOT a Dog Person (i.e. i love my dog, but please keep yours away from me, thanks.) this book helped me understand my little guy better, plus it gives actionable tasks and activities to do with and for your pup! plus, y’know, learning about things you’re scared of helps to lessen that fear. i’d recommend this to anyone who has, wants, or regularly interacts with a dog.
a closed and common orbit by becky chambers (f)- is this series complete fluff? absolutely. am i fundamentally different after reading this one? maybe.
the best we could do by thi bui (nf)- this is so far outside of my personal experience but somehow still made me come to peace with my relationship with my mom?? and it’s barely even about that?? idk. this is probably objectively the best book i’ve read this year.
books that were just fun as hell:
mexican gothic by silvia moreno-garcia (f)- this book made me YELL out loud
death on the nile by agatha christie (f)- i grew up on agatha christie shows, but never actually read her before this year! she really was That Bitch. read this before the movie comes out
cosmoknights by hannah templer (f)- i read this in one sitting through the worst headache i’ve had in years. it is a goddamn DELIGHT. this book has everything: spaceships. mech suits. fighting the patriarchy. a perfect otp. fun art in bright colors with clean lines. onomatopoetic WAPs from before the song gave that hilarious context. 800 lesbians. this is an antidepressant in graphic novel form.
stiff by mary roach (nf)- ms. roach is like the 4th most represented author on my bookshelf because she 1. stays writing about shit i’m interested in and 2. manages to talk about gross and ridiculous things without resorting to sensationalism. it takes skill to write a hilarious book about corpses.
black sun by rebecca roanhorse (f)- excellent sexual tension between a horny siren pirate and a hot doomed... monk, kinda? set in the pre-columbian gulf of mexico with magic and shit.
cuisine chinoise by zao dao (? n/f)- this graphic novel about chinese food history/mythology is BEAUTIFUL.
the color of magic by terry pratchett (f)- you’d think a hardcore douglas adams stan would have gotten to this sooner, but no, i had to date a nerdy white boy to get here. it’s fun though! i’m not gonna read them all, but this one was good. bonus: contains one (1) great himbo.
gideon the ninth by tamsyn muir (f)- like 500 pages of action and mystery and jokes and space necromancy. harrow the ninth gets a special mention bc it has a meme reference that took me out so hard i had to close the book, lie down, and groan for an entire minute before continuing.
other minds by peter godfrey-smith (nf)- i love octopuses. on one tma bonus ep, jonny sims says that if a creature can choose to do evil, then it’s a Person. octopuses are People. but anyway frfr this has an explanation of the evolution of consciousness that is cool af. (this one is much better than the other recent popsci octo book which i will not name out of politeness.)
the perfect predator by steffanie strathdee and thomas patterson (nf)- i read this bc my microbiology prof recommended it and it’s cool as heck! it’s got adventure, drama, mystery, Science-with-a-capital-S. i’m biased bc i’m a bit of a microbes nerd, but i had a blast with this. (but only bc we know going in that everything works out okay; if i hadn’t known that, i would have been TOO stressed!)
books that were a little less fun but still very readable:
my sister, the serial killer by oyinkan braithwaite (f)- i couldn’t find this as funny as other people bc i, too, have a beautiful sister who’s an insufferable narcissist, so it hits a little too close to home, but. it is a wild ride.
piranesi by susanna clarke (f)- idek what to say! i went into this one blind just bc it had a cool cover and title, so i guess i’d recommend that for other people too.
the sixth world series by rebecca roanhorse (f)- monster hunting! a post-apocalyptic take that doesn’t feel tired.
the shades of magic trilogy by v.e. schwab (f)- easy escapism. some ideas feel a little first draft-y, but idk, it’s also a pretty simple premise (which isn’t a bad thing). it’s a decent urban fantasy set in ~georgian?-era london. very actiony. suffers from a bit of i’m-not-like-other-girls disease, but i didn’t even notice until book two or three, so.
the only good indians by stephen graham jones (f)- starts off a little ??? (and reeks of being Written By A Man) but picks up. the pacing’s great and there’s just a super fucking cool monster.
robopocalypse by daniel h. wilson (f)- this reads like a tv miniseries so much that i can’t believe it isn’t one yet.
confessions of the fox by jordy rosenberg (f)- not my usual cup of tea, fiction-wise, but still compelling. a fresh take on the white-male-english-professor-self-insert? but not insufferable. gets weird!
spinning silver by naomi novik (f)- rumplestilstkin, but make it interesting! a great, richly-told fairy tale, but like, large scale. good to read on a cold day while you’re wrapped up in a blanket with some hot tea.
interior chinatown by charles yu (f)- compulsively readable. a couple things bugged me, but not enough to make me dislike it. a fun companion piece to how to live safely in a science fictional universe. i like this guy’s style.
cannibalism by bill schutt (nf)- COOL. mostly covers the animal kingdom (fun), spends too much time on the donner party (less fun), ends with a SPICY take on prions that i cannot get out of my head!!!
buzz, sting, bite by anne sverdrup-thygeson (nf)- BUGS! broad but not overwhelming, neither dumbed down nor overly scientific, short enough to finish in a day or two. recommend this to literally everyone.
books that made me want to read everything else in the author’s ouevre:
the time invariance of snow by e. lily yu (f)- this FUCKS but it’s too short!!!
an unkindness of ghosts by rivers solomon (f)- okay this book is SO good and so well-written and interesting and blah blah blah all the good things, but... the whole time, i was just like?? why???? why is this what you’re choosing to write about??? (i did also read the deep and blood is another word for hunger after this one, and i did like them both, especially the latter, but i think they can do better! like i think they could write a perfect book and i am gonna be *eyes emoji* until then.)
the space between worlds by micaiah johnson (f)- a fine debut novel, but i want to see her do something a little more... idk, refined? i think she overreaches here, like it’s a little... idk looper? this is how you lose the time war? there’s a better comparison, but i can’t think of it, but you get the idea. and then halfway through it shifts gears to mad max. there’s something weird about one of the central relationships, like it’s not complex enough to take as long to resolve as it does. idk idk. there are just a lot of little nitpicky things. it’s not bad! but i think she can do better and i look forward to finding out.
postcolonial love poem by natalie diaz (p)- thinky! like i tried to read this before bed, but it’s not the sort of thing to parse out while you’re falling asleep, it requires more attention than that.
books that Learned Me Somethin:
smoke gets in your eyes by caitlin doughty (nf)- i am a self-professed death obsessed weirdo, fascinated by death and mourning, but i didn’t know all that much about what happens to a body between the dying and the funeral! this book isn’t big, but it covers a lot and doughty’s writing style is engaging and honest. it’s very memorable.
queer by meg-john barker and julia scheele (nf)- i’m gonna be totally honest and say Queer Theory is above my intellectual pay grade, but this book takes you by the hand and explains the basics.
vitamania by catherine price (nf)- LMAO my fellow americans, never take a supplement. this book is great and well-researched, but normal folks don’t need to read it, just listen to season two of the dream podcast, which definitely cribbed from this.
vegetable kingdom by bryant terry (nf)- this is a fine cookbook, my favorite of his that i’ve read so far. gets a special mention bc i had a religious experience just reading one of his kohlrabi recipes. absolutely gutted that i didn’t have an opportunity to try it this year, since the pandemic put the kibosh on all family bbqs.
the best american food writing 2020 edited by j. kenji lopez-alt (nf)- this really is just a great collection.
are prisons obsolete? by angela y. davis (nf)- yes.
i moved to los angeles to work in animation by natalie nourigat (nf)- before reading this, i had basically zero knowledge of how the animation industry works. now i know like three things.
the secret lives of bats by merlin tuttle (nf)- BATS! okay this book is more about the adventures of being a bat scientist than it actually is about bats, but there are bats in there. insectivorous bats basically shit glitter, you should know this.
books from valuable perspectives:
hood feminism by mikki kendall (nf)- a breakdown of who’s getting left out of feminist spaces, why that’s happening, and why it shouldn’t be happening.
all you can ever know by nicole chung (nf)- a (transracial) adoptee’s take on adoption and learning more about her birth family. the personal storytelling of this one really stuck with me.
motherhood so white by nefertiti austin (nf)- a single-mom-by-choice’s take on the foster system/adoption process. walks you through some things i always wondered about and some things i wouldn’t even have thought about.
this place by kateri akiwenzie-damm et al (? n/f)- i, like a lot of non- native americans, only know that history in broad strokes. getting this many highly specific stories in one dense and beautiful book felt like a lucky find. and taking that perspective into the future in the context of that history is v good.
empty by susan burton (nf)- eating disorder stories are important to me bc i care about food so much. this one is so relatable- not in its specificity, but rather its generality. it’s easy to empathize with her perspective because it’s like, Oh, i don’t have that exact problem, but i struggle with different problems in a very similar way. (feels like the opposite of roxane gay’s hunger, in a way.)
obit by victoria chang (p)- this exploration of grief is... woof.
short story collections are hard to evaluate bc you’ll never read one where every single story hits but i generally enjoyed these:
a thousand beginnings and endings edited by ellen oh and elsie chapman (f)
how long til black future month? by n.k. jemisin (f)
her body and other parties by carmen maria machado (f)
books i revisited:
the broken earth trilogy by n.k. jemisin (f)- i read the series backwards this time and like... i can’t really find any faults in these books, man. they’re just the best.
everyone’s a aliebn when ur a aliebn too by jomny sun (f... but is it really?)- half of this book’s sales are from me buying it for other people bc it’s the only way i know how to say i love you. i reread it every time just to make sure it still feels right and it always does.
other honorable mentions:
white is for witching by helen oyeyemi (f)- not to pit two bad bitches against each other, but this book does what akwaeke emezi’s freshwater was trying to do. it’s a little weird, a little haunted, a little of a lot of things. read this only in the dead of winter. (and with stephen rennicks’ score for the little stranger playing in the background.)
homie by danez smith (p)- there’s a lot going on here, but this just made me crack a smile a couple times in a way that no other book of poetry has ever done.
the murder of roger ackroyd and murder in mesopotamia by agatha christie (f)- That Bitch!
blues by nikki giovanni (p)- she sure has some Things To Say
the three-body problem by cixin liu (f)- interesting concepts, but... idk something’s missing? felt weirdly soulless to me. i’m probably not gonna read the sequels. but it did make some points!
the sisters of the winter wood by rena rossner (f)- i’m a slut for shapeshifting, okay. but this is a good fairy tale, it works!
parable of the sower by octavia butler (f)- i read this in march, when the pandemic was just kicking off and boy that was not the right time. def my least favorite of hers so far, but an octavia butler i don’t love is still better than a hell of a lot of other books. no idea when or if i’ll get to a good enough headspace for the sequel.
faves:
saturnino herrán by adriana zapett tapia (nf)- i got to learn new things about my mans and see some of his paintings i’ve never even seen online! GOSH.
on food and cooking by harold mcgee (nf)- yeah yeah, i’ve already mentioned this book half a dozen times on here this year, but i don’t care. this book lives off the shelf in my home bc i reference it like every other fucking day. this book is a part of me now.

Ever the happy spirit, some bright aura of curiosity drawing attention to the mink in the most mundane of places. To be alone among the casual was to lure countless doting by the unfamiliar public upon realization of his placid nature. A small hand along the back of the bear’s paw slips away, a young child pulled away for the adventure of the day as it waves back to the new friend she’d made. Bepo waves back, if for the moment lost in genial thought and unaware of the infamous emblem emblazoned on his suit. ❝ Okay! Bye-bye, little miss ! ❞
Rare were times of peace in an era of constant strife. It paid dividends to have a sense of amiable naivety among the wisdom of survival. Distracted attention turns, slowly but surely, at the sound of another approaching. Greeted only with the vivid blue of eyes, he stops to process the new encounter before properly speaking. ❝ Oh, sorry ─ I didn’t know you were there. Did you need something ? ❞
