I've been really inspired by the visible mending ideas on @wastelesscrafts page, and decided to give it a shot on my cat-scratched couch.
Details on the process below the image description for anyone interested.
[Image ID: Three pictures of the back right corner of an olive green suede couch, each image from a slightly different angle. There is a hole in the fabric just below the back of the armrest, roughly the size and shape of the sole of a shoe. The hole has been patched with a cream-colored fabric with a thick, textured weave. The surrounding area of the couch has loose threads from cat scratches. End Image ID.]
This corner of the couch is their absolute favorite scratching spot, and they made a hole down to the wood that was bigger than my hand. I didn't bother making the edges pretty because I expect that they'll have this destroyed soon too, though I'm considering adding vines & flowers if it holds up well over the next month or so.
I used scrap upholstery fabric in a color I thought looked nice, and embroidery floss (3 strands, not 6, too hard to get through fabric) that matched the couch. I would list what stitches I used but honestly there was absolutely no method to the madness. Some combination of determination and desperation seemed to do the trick though.
Even with thimbles this was murder. The thick fabrics + the upholstery padding made this really tough, I wouldn't recommend this if you have issues with finger mobility, strength, or sensitivity.
Funky project, would spend a day on it again, but only after my fingers heal.

I've started making a reversible waistcoat that I wanted to share.
Both these fabrics were leftover from cosplays and I realised they'd look quite nice together. So currently basics sewn togther, I'm gonna use a probably slightly lighter brown probably leather effect trim around the edges to make it a bit easier.

Obviously still needs buttons as well and I zoomed in way too much taking those photos but all well.
It's been a bit of a pain with the velvet being stretchy and the other fabric not but I've worked with worse.

Charity sewing today.
I’ve been slowly turning thread clippings and scrap fabric into new fabric for some time. About a month ago, I cut the panels into smaller pieces and added denim so I could use them for zippered bags. My original plan was to make the bags solid on the back, but decided I’d rather hold on to my larger denim pieces for other projects, so the bags are double sided.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Video shows each side and lining of 9 bags, Each of the bags have a side featuring fabric made from thread clippings, arranged on a base layer, covered with tulle, and topstitched. T-shirt yarn was added over the top in random loops and curves. The other side has a landscape design of miscellaneous fabrics, mostly from garments I’ve altered over the past 5-ish years.
I’ll make more eventually. I’ve got plenty of lining material already cut, and my thread bins and scrap boxes fill up fast!
Tumblr media
Edit: decided this side needed a little embellishment, so I grabbed my miscellaneous bead and button boxes and did a bit of hand stitching. Not too much though, my hands don’t like it.

My improv quilt made it onto the wall in the entranceway this afternoon. I am pleased with the way the lighting shows the quilting and makes the colour pop. It is a nice spot of warm colour as you enter the house. I think we may need that this winter.

I think scraps means something different to me than other people. I consider a scrap, pieces that are 4"x4" or smaller and usually not enough to make a beautiful pattern on a full quilt. Maybe only enough to do a beautiful pattern of a few blocks. So, when I see all your quilts that have enough fabric to make the same all over pattern, I think, wow they had a lot of large scraps leftover to be able to do that. This is how I use my scraps. I use the Quilt as you Go Method.

Hello, Fall is here, my piglet wanders out the garden a while. she’s made from fabric scraps, still she looks cute with her tail from a short cord, doesn’t she?
The temperature is chilly already, 2-5 degree Celcius! she will need some fluffy to put on soon. The leaves are still falling down!

Sewing time!
I’ve been working on a new idea to use up some of the glorious abundance of upholstery samples I have been gifted over the past year or so. I saw a post where someone made some small leaf coasters, and I knew I had several fabrics that were perfect fall colors. I wandered around my yard and gathered up leaves from the trees, then I researched what color they would turn over the next few months. I drew templates of mulberry, sassafras, cottonwood, maple, gum, as well as sycamore. I traced the templates onto the fabric with a sharpie, then got to stitching. The leaves took three 4-6 hour sessions to stitch and trim. I have a stash of embroidery hoops, a few of which have broken closures, so I wrapped one of them with the hem from a t-shirt. Pinned the leaves on, then hand stitched them to the fabric wrapped hoop.
