Where did Sebatians got his lastname from? Did O!Ciel name him that too?

Where did "Michaelis" come from?

Good question.

Well, there are three things I can think of.

There was a Sebastien Michaelis, a French inquisitor and demonologist. Our earl might have given Sebastian that last name a bit later, as a sort of joke, when it became apparent that Sebastian might need a last name. Maybe it was chosen in the spur of the moment, during one of his assignments as watchdog.

S2 of the anime has some narration near the end, like on the last episode -- I think -- where there's a meaning for the name, but it's based on a similar sounding word in Japanese. To me, that has nothing to do with what Yana-san was thinking when she made the decision to use this as the demon's name. Our earl would not have used a Japanese word or concept to name him, so I don't consider this canon. At least he would have no reason to do so, so that's an anime-only explanation, provided by anime writers... not the original author.

There is a very real possibility that Yana-san got a lot of inspiration from the real Sebastian Michaelis who currently lives and works in London... as the Tea Master for Tetley. I've posted some stuff about him before and even posted some shitposts about him and our demon Sebastian. However, our earl wouldn't know anything about a Tetley's employee living now. So, I'd go back to #1 for how Sebastian gets the name in-story.

Did you wonder how much inspiration they drew from the descriptions of the different demons of the Ars Goetia to create their characters and what that could point towards in terms of personality and powers? I did. You can find each character with it's respective descriptions here, divided by their respective factions.

Sitri

Sitri (also spelled Bitru, Sytry) is a Great Prince of Hell, and reigns over sixty legions of demons. He causes men to love women and vice versa, and can make people bare themselves naked if desired. He is depicted with the face of a leopard and the wings of a griffin, but under the conjurer's request he changes into a very beautiful man.

This wiki article adds on that he's "dangerously charming", that he "reveals the most intimate secrets of women and gains power over them in doing so" and that he's "one of the darkest entities, and only the most experienced may summon Sitri to speak to him and inquire about the love of someone", and goes on to warn that "you should be careful when invoking the prince, for he likes concentration and is known not only to work with love and lust, but also the feelings of hatred" not sure about it's relevance but eh, interesting enough.

Leraye

Leraje (also Leraie, Leraikha, Leraye, Loray, Oray) is a mighty Great Marquis of Hell who has thirty legions of demons under his power. He causes great battles and disputes, and makes gangrene wounds caused by arrows. He is depicted as a gallant and handsome archer clad in green, carrying a bow and quiver

Paimon

Paimon (also Paimonia, Paymon) is one of the Kings of Hell, more obedient to Lucifer than other kings are, and has two hundred legions of demons under his rule. He has a great voice and roars as soon as he comes, speaking in this manner for a while until the conjurer compels him and then he answers clearly the questions he is asked. When a conjurer invokes this demon he must look towards the northwest, the direction of Paimon's house, and when Paimon appears he must be allowed to ask the conjurer what he wishes and be answered, in order to obtain the same from him.

Paimon teaches all arts, philosophies, and sciences, and secret things; he can reveal all mysteries of the Earth, wind, and water, what the mind is, and where it is, and everything the conjurer wants to know. He gives good familiars, dignities and confirms them, and binds men to the conjurer's will.

If Paimon is cited alone, buffering or sacrifice must be done, and he will accept it, though the precise nature of the gift is unclear; then two kings called Beball (Bebal or Labal) and Abalam (Abalim) will go to him together with other spirits, often twenty-five legions; but these other spirits do not always come unless the conjurer calls upon them.

Paimon is depicted as a man with an effeminate face, wearing a precious crown, and riding a dromedary. Before him often goes a host of demons with the shape of men, playing trumpets, cymbals, and any other sort of musical instrument

Astaroth

Astaroth (also Ashtaroth, Astarot and Asteroth) is referred to in The Lesser Key of Solomon as a very powerful demon who commands 40 legions of demons. In art, in the Dictionnaire Infernal, Astaroth is depicted as a nude man with feathered wings, wearing a crown, holding a serpent in one hand, and riding a beast with dragon-like wings and a serpent-like tail. According to Sebastien Michaelis he is a demon of the First Hierarchy, who seduces by means of laziness, vanity, and rationalized philosophies. His adversary is St. Bartholomew, who can protect against him for he has resisted Astaroth's temptations. To others, he teaches mathematical sciences and handicrafts, can make men invisible and lead them to hidden treasures, and answers every question formulated to him. He was also said to give to mortal beings the power over serpents. His name is possibly taken from the goddess Asherah or Astarte.

Zagan

Zagan (also Zagam) is a Great King and President of Hell, commanding over thirty-three legions of demons. He makes men witty; he can also turn wine into water, water into wine, and blood into wine (according to Pseudomonarchia Daemonum blood into oil, oil into blood, and a fool into a wise man). Other of his powers is that of turning metals into coins that are made with that metal (i.e., gold into a gold coin, copper into a copper coin, etc.). Zagan is depicted as a griffin-winged bull that turns into a man after a while.

Belial

Belial (also Belhor, Baalial, Beliar, Beliall, Beliel) is listed as the sixty-eighth spirit of The Lesser Key of Solomon. He is a King of Hell with 80 legions of demons and 50 legions of spirits under his command. He was created as the first, after Lucifer. He has the power to distribute senatorships and gives excellent familiars. He must be presented with offerings, sacrifices, and gifts, or else he will not give true answers to demands.

The Spanish wiki provides that he's connected to true independence, self sufficiency, pride, and personal growth. Jhon Milton's Paradise Lost says: that he was worshipped in Sodom but had not effigies built in his honor and that hell hasn't since received someone as dissolute/corrupted, drunk or in love of vice for the sake of vice itself. But that his interior is beautiful, and he is filled with grace and dignity.

It also provides that his name might come from "he of corrupted gains". He's also referred to as: the disobedient, the rebel, lord of arrogance, lord of pride and the son of hell, and impious men are referred to as the children of Belial. Belial is also used as a synonym of Satan.

The English wiki, however, is a mess and I just couldn't understand a word, but Paradise Lost is mentioned.

Sonnelion is a non-Goetic demon, first discovered by Sebastien Michaelis in "Histoire admirable de la Possession et conversion d'une penitente" of 1613, appearing as the last demon in the first hierarchy, classifying it as a demon of hatred. So will Dukantè in 1963, even channeling a seal of it. It is by no means a demon suitable for neophytes, certainly difficult for professional practitioners. Sonnelion, strangely enough, presents a lot of information, between stories of practitioners and scholars, we know everything except its origin unfortunately. She is a demon who embodies the female archetype to perfection; she is called the Princess of Discord, the one who brings hatred against enemies, creates conflict and bestows vengeance, providing the practitioner with the courage to carry out a revenge against those who have hurt him or her. She divides lovers, brings arguments, divisions in general, and ruptures of any relationship, be it work or social, feuds, disagreements, betrayals, disloyalty, infidelity, brutality, dishonor. Knows the macabre art of mental and physical torture, bringing chaos, violence. Skilled in the necromantic art, gives concentration and balance so that purposes are achieved. She unleashes the wrath of the practitioner and his energy, dare I say it, is very similar to that of Sargatanas: those who approach both experience extremely strong, pressing, almost breathtaking sensations. Again S. Connolly associates her with the color red, but I think black and purple are perfect for her. She also associates it with the warm season, specifically the summer solstice (and not only her). Her favorite incense may be cinnamon, frankincense. Like all demons, she likes blood as offerings, as well as full-bodied red wine with a strong, decisive flavor. As @reginademonae would say, I would call her totally dark, a black demon. Not excluding that it may have roots in Greek mythology, among the legends of the Morie (especially Lachesi or Atropo). But nothing is certain so I won't go out on a limb.

How is it that everytime a life is taken from me, I have to endure? Endure so much of my life to become human? I don't know, I've been in the Creed for so long. Sometimes I question if being human is worth it at all, I hate you Juno for choosing me to be a goddesses for the assassin world.

Mey-rin is currently resting in her bedroom, as she sighs in frustration. She really want to escape her past so much but of course she can't. At least it won't get any worse.

"Mey-rin, are you alright? It seems your very off today?" Sebastian enters the room. "Huh? Yeah I am, sorry Mr. Sebastian! It won't happen again, yes I wouldn't sir!" Mey-rin stood from the bed. "Alright then, but if happens again, I want you to rest today" Sebastian stated. "Got it Mr. Sebastian!" Mey-rin nodded.

Sebastian left the scene as Mey-rin sighs, as she does her normal maid work. Cue Elizabeth entering the mansion.

"Ciel! Are you free today! Let's hang out!" Elizabeth smiles. "I'm already busy Elizabeth, you really do have such terrible timing" Ciel scowled at her. "Oh...sorry" Elizabeth apologized as she looks away. "It's whatever, you can stay but please don't disturb me" Ciel left her alone.

"Till this day, I don't know how Elizabeth and you Sebastien, endure us so much. Sometimes I question if you leave us alone for good, would be happy? We don't know and that bothers us" Mey-rin looks at Elizabeth with an image of young Sebastien Michaelis besides her.

Mey-rin generally wanted her brother to be here, to comfort Elizabeth but such wishful thinking isn't it? Maybe she can hang out with Elizabeth to pass time, she reminds of her brother a lot.

"Lady Elizabeth, if you like, we can spend time together! I already finished my chores today! Yes I do!" Mey-rin insisted. "Sure, that'll be great. Thank you Mey-rin" Elizabeth shows a small smile.

Mey-rin went to find Sebastian doing the young master lunch for the day as Mey-rin appears besides him.

"Mr. Sebastian, is it okay I can go hang out with Lady Elizabeth?" Mey-rin asked. "Be my guest I suppose, be careful there ladies alright?" Sebastian answered with a firm tone. "We got it Mr. Sebastian! Thank you" Mey-rin bowed as she ran off.

Elizabeth waited for Mey-rin as she appears wearing her outside clothes.

"Alright, let's get going Lady Elizabeth" Mey-rin smiles. "Great! Let's get going!" Elizabeth took Mey-rin arm.

Entering the City of London, they look around the shopping area, full of stores. Elizabeth is always interested in dresses so they go to the clothing shop. Elizabeth looks around all the dresses, trying to decide what to buy but decided not to then Mey-rin insisted to go to the Library.

"What books do you read?" Elizabeth asked. "Usually historical books, historical fiction, academic novels and demonology books" Mey-rin answered. "That sounds like your a nobility status" Elizabeth mention.

"Well shit, didn't mean to reveal that. Well, actually I can drop hints for Elizabeth to figure what I am, it l'll probably busy her" Mey-rin smirks.

"I do? That's interesting to say the least Lady Elizabeth" Mey-rin chuckled. "Your being very vague Mey-rin" Elizabeth puff her cheeks. "Well, a challenge for you. I know your smarter then you look Elizabeth" Mey-rin smirks.

"Excuse me? Are you Mey-rin Xinato?" The library man asked. "Yes? You are?" Mey-rin questions him. "Well, there's a book that has note with your name on it" the library man answered. "There is? May I check?" Mey-rin asked. "Of course, follow me" The library man nodded his head.

The two girls follows the old man, he took out the black book that he place on the table and took out a note.

"Here, you can read it if you like, I'll give you no charge on this book" the old man librarian left.

Mey-rin took the note, then opens it and eye widen in shock.

"What does it say?" Elizabeth looks at her. "It's...my brother...it's his book" Mey-rin took the book off the table and looks at it. "You have a brother?" Elizabeth reacts in shock. "Umm yeah I do but like I said, I'm being vague for a reason. If you figure out for little information, I'll tell you the truth but once I do, you can't tell anyone, got it?" Mey-rin winks at her. "Alright then, deal" Elizabeth smiles. "Let's get going then, we still have things to look around" Mey-rin mention.

Going around more at the shopping area, Elizabeth enjoys her time with Mey-rin, she doesn't actually talk down to her and willing to understand her completely which something Ciel hopes to be....wait! Why does she remind her of Ciel?

"You know, you remind me of Ciel" Elizabeth comments. "I do? That's interesting. Where do you get that idea?" Mey-rin asked. "I don't know, your like an women version Ciel but different. It's like you acknowledge what you have done in the past" Elizabeth explained.

"And Ciel says she isn't smart, bitch, that kid will never know and understand Elizabeth" Mey-rin comments.

"It's about to be night" Elizabeth looks above the sky. "Yeah I noticed, I'll take you home" Mey-rin insisted. "Thanks Mey-rin, your quite an interesting maid" Elizabeth smiles at her.

Mey-rin took Elizabeth's back to her mansion, she waved goodbye to her as she uses demon magic to make it back to the mansion. Entering slowly at the mansion, she heads back to her room, placing the black book in her drawer.

"What took you so long to be back here?" Sebastian spoke. "Huh?!" Mey-rin jolted. "It seems like you and Lady Elizabeth were enjoying today day" Sebastian comments. "Oh yeah we did! I apologize Mr. Sebastian" Mey-rin bowed. "It's quite alright, I'm glad you two are safe, leaving you two ladies in the City of London is dangerous" Sebastian expressed his concerns. "Thank you for you concern Mr. Sebastian but I can assure we are fine!" Mey-rin smiles. "If you insist, have a goodnight Mey-rin" Sebastian left her room.

Mey-rin sighs in relief, opening her drawer to take out the black book from her brother.

"Sebastien....I hope your okay brother. If you alive or your the demon butler. I'll always love you and cheerish you. I wish I wasn't like Ciel. A revenge killer, workaholic, and an asshole. If I ever see again one day. I hope my years of suffering will give me a chance to see how much I changed" Mey-rin look through the pages.

With Elizabeth, resting on the bed, thinking about Mey-rin. She stood up from the bed and ponders.

"Mey-rin mention she reads demonology books but those books are hard to come by since the great demonology was over years ago" Elizabeth ponders.

Elizabeth knows Mey-rin was dropping hints towards their conversation together. First one is the way mention her book taste, academic books are usually for nobles to read past time. The second one is the Black book that belongs to her brother, it seems like Mey-rin knew what book it is. Third one is she seem to be hiding herself from anyone and telling Elizabeth she is smart what she seems. That is true but not like Ciel will believe that, Elizabeth felt like if she was different then maybe Ciel will give her respect but that's not main focus...for now.

"Might as well sleep, I have all day tomorrow to figure it out. I wonder what I'm getting into" Elizabeth lays down the bed to sleep.

That's the first chapter! Please tell me what you think! I'm excited to write more of it but let's see how it goes.

Yuzuru's character design is interesting cause like... The battle butler trope is Sebastien Michaelis inspired, so you'd expect him to look a bit older. But he has this cute face and have arts that look very very baby, and some other arts that look more adult.

But like... He carries himself like an adult.

Hey, could I please request for a yandere Sebastian, Alois, Claude, Grell and Ciel headcanons on how they'd react to the reader continuously saying how much she admires a writer and really likes their works and thinks they're really cool? Will they get jealous though?

I will try my best :

Ciel

He will always find you reading books of that author but he won't pay any mind to it because you like reading

But then you will start inviting him to read with you, and he notices how much the author name repeats and how much you start babbling about the artist creativity and amazing writing

he won't be mad at first but when he sees you admiring him a little to much, you say how much you love them, that is when he draws the Line, he will take all your books and will never let you lay any eyes to any book again

Sébastien

He will notice how much you read from that author very early probably from the first time he stalks you about how your room is filled with that author books

When he gets you, he will notice how you start talking about them none stop, he likes hearing your voice, but he doesn't get a pleasant feeling when the admiration is not on him

I don't think Sébastien will force you to stop reading the author books due to him knowing your admiration wasn't romantic,and isn't necessarily a threat to him and also he can use this to get closer to you

He hates it in the start because you pay all you attention in the books of that author creation all the time he should be the only one who get your attention

but when you show you admiration to the author that is too much he will burn all the books in the estate and bring that author and maybe burn him too

I think he hates it as well, mostly because of how annoying you get when you start talking about that author

he will get kind of jealous when you talk about the author for hours but he won't show he will hide your books and mbye kill the author as well

Claude is a little sadistic when cry to about how your favorite writer was dead he will get the best pleasure with comforting you

They are probably the only person from the group that will show their annoyance or how your giving someone else more attention

if you still don't stop it with how much you love the author they will literally throw every book out of the window and bring you the author head as a statement

they will demand attention you are their darling and only theirs

I wanted to ask, is there any instance in the manga where someone refers to Sebastian as "Sebastian Michaelis"? I mean, does any character, including Sebas, ever use the surname?

Has Yana ever said anything about where the surname comes from in-universe? (I know that irl it's a reference to a real person, but has she said anything about where Sebas got "Michaelis" from or if he just invented it?)

Off the top of my head (and double checking of moments I remember), I also have a hard time coming up with an instance where Sebas introduces himself by his full (temporary) name. (Sorry, I realise that even though my memory for Kuro is fairly good, it is still not perfect... but I also don’t really have time time to reread 175 chapters just to check one trivia. Anyone who does have a more complete picture, please do share!)

The only one I remember is when he introduces himself as ProfMika (ミカせん(MikaSen), the Nickname the JP fandom has for him (≽ω≼)). But then Sebas is never referred to by his first name in the arc, except by his master in private.

There are no other instances I happen to remember or to have stumbled across where Sebas’ full name is being used.

As explained in this post, Yana doesn’t really attach importance to names, so it also surprises me very little that in 10+ years, so few names have been dropped. I mean...what other series has THREE main characters without their real names known after a decade??? Yana cares about names so little a lot of characters aren’t even introduced to other characters on page. So yeah, anyone waiting for the revelation of O!Ciel, Sebas' or UT's true name, don't hold your breath. I judge the chance of never ever learning their true names higher.

Chapter 15-16 for example, are the ones wherein Agni and Soma newly meet Sebas and O!Ciel. Without the main duo having introduced themselves to the strangers, the next chapter Agni already showed that he learned of their names, calling the master "Lord Ciel", and referring to the butler as "Mr. Sebastian."

It is possible that the self-introduction did happen, we just didn't see it. (Yes, I checked).

For Sebas though, it is actually really logical that his name or full name is hardly used. He is a servant, and servants were supposed to be little more than tools and furniture, after all.

In chapter 88 when our protagonists first meet Sieglinde, she asks for the boy's name. Ciel replied, but Sebastian didn't say anything, because it was not his place to talk. What proper servant would introduce himself unasked for, in the same spotlights as his master?

And indeed it wasn't until later that Sieglinde asked Ciel, that the boy dropped his butler's first name. In West-European culture I believe, people's surnames are not commonly mentioned unless it is specifically to distinguish someone's identity, or because the name hold some weight. A mere servant though? Nah.

As for a potential explanation for the name "Michaelis", well, we are fairly certain Yana was inspired by the historical Sébastien Michaëlis, but when I try to search Yana's twitter, there are no results to be found. I think at the time Yana didn't really expect her tiny, silly, one-shot manga to come from the ground, so she just went for something quick and edgy.

I am not sure whether you are open to roleplay interpretations, but my favourite Sebas roleplayer @akumadeshitsumon wrote:

This roleplayer suggested in the post that Sebas as a demon chose the name "Michaelis" to spite Michaëlis for his classification of demons. I also assume the real Sebas would have found a 17th century inquisitor's work about demons highly offensive.
