Earthquake Reveals Aztec Snakehead Beneath Mexico City
Researchers are conserving a rare snakehead from the Aztecs that still retains its painted colors from hundreds of years ago.
An earthquake last year revealed a big surprise beneath a law school in modern-day Mexico City: a giant, colorful snakehead from the Aztec Empire.
The snakehead dates back more than 500 years, to when the Aztecs controlled the area, which at the time was part of the flourishing capital of Tenochtitlan. The sculpture was discovered after a magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck Mexico City on Sept. 19, 2022; the seismic event caused damage and changes in the topography, revealing the snakehead beneath a building that was part of a law school at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) said in a Spanish-language statement.
The Aztecs built temples and pyramids and worshipped a number of deities, including Quetzalcoatl, who was often depicted as a snake. However, it's unclear if this sculpture depicts him, the archaeologists said.
The sculpted snake is 5.9 feet (1.8 meters) long, 2.8 feet (0.85 m) wide and 3.3 feet (1 m) high, and it weighs about 1.3 tons (1.2 metric tons), the INAH said. Several colors — including red, blue, black and white — are preserved on the sculpture.
Tumblr media
Color was preserved on about 80% of the sculpture's surface. To keep it preserved, an INAH team lifted the snakehead out of the ground with a crane and constructed a humidity chamber around the sculpture. This chamber allows the sculpture to lose humidity gradually, with its color being preserved, María Barajas Rocha, a conservationist with the INAH who worked extensively on the sculpture, said in the statement.
While other snakehead sculptures have been found at Tenochtitlan, this one is particularly important for its preserved colors, said Erika Robles Cortés, an archaeologist with the INAH.
Tumblr media
"Thanks to the context in which this piece was discovered, but above all, thanks to the stupendous intervention of the restorers-conservators led by Maria Barajas, it has been possible to stabilize the colors for its preservation in almost all the sculpture, which is extremely important, because the colors have helped us to conceive pre-Hispanic art from another perspective," Robles Cortés told Live Science in an email.
The sculpture's "sheer size is impressive, as well as its artistry," but the survival of the colors is remarkable, said Frances Berdan, a professor emeritus of anthropology at California State University, San Bernardino who was not involved with the excavation. "The survival of black, white, red, yellow, and blue paints is particularly interesting — one gains a good image of the visual impact of such sculptures as they were arrayed about the city center," Berdan said in an email.
Tumblr media
In addition to its preserved colors, the snakehead's size is notable, said Bertrand Lobjois, an associate professor of humanities at the University of Monterrey in Mexico who is not involved in the excavation. The "first time I saw this serpent head, I was dazzled by its dimensions," he said in an email.
Lobjois also praised the conservation work that allowed the colors to survive, noting that "the conservation process allows us to appreciate the naturalistic approach of figuration" the Aztec artists used.
This work is ongoing and will continue at the site into next year.

HiPOD 11 Sept 2023: Hills in Coprates Chasma
In this image, we see two well developed cones, most likley the Martian equivalents of cinder cones, which are part of wider volcanic field in Valles Marineris. A stereo image might provide insight about their shape and size. Observations like this might provide hints about explosive conditions at the time of eruption and also why explosive volcanism occured in this area.

Published online Sept 25, 2023
Abstract
In November 2022, our pediatric hospital replaced the requirement for universal masking of all healthcare personnel and visitors in all clinical buildings with a requirement for masking only during patient encounters. Following this change, we observed an immediate, substantial, and sustained increase in healthcare-associated respiratory viral infections.
During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, universal masking of all healthcare personnel (HCP) and visitors was implemented in most hospitals in the United States to mitigate transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Like other hospitals, we observed a concurrent and rapid decline in the incidence of healthcare-associated respiratory viral infections (HARVIs). 1–3 Universal masking was implemented simultaneously with a large reduction in community respiratory viral infection incidence and numerous mitigation strategies in healthcare settings and the community, which also may have affected HARVI rates. These included universal hospital admission and preprocedural testing for SARS-CoV-2 that often also identified other viruses, hospital visitor restrictions, increased use of personal protective equipment and hand hygiene, and physical distancing. Therefore, lower HARVI rates may not have been solely due to universal masking. In our pediatric hospital, the requirement for universal masking in all clinical buildings was discontinued on November 8, 2022. No other COVID-19–related mitigation strategies changed at that time, including visitor restrictions and HCP work exclusions (see Supplementary Background Material online). This situation provided an opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of universal masking in healthcare settings in preventing HARVIs.
Methods
Throughout most of the COVID-19 pandemic, our 490-bed pediatric hospital had required masking by HCPs, patients, and visitors in all clinical buildings. On November 8, 2022, this mandate was replaced with a narrower requirement that all HCP wear a medical mask (or higher-grade respirator if indicated) when providing direct patient care and encouraged patients and families to mask for these same episodes. A definite HARVI was defined as an infection meeting 3 criteria: (1) microbiologic criterion including an upper or lower respiratory specimen testing positive on an antigen test or respiratory pathogen multiplex polymerase chain reaction panel for adenovirus, endemic human coronavirus (HKU1, NL63, 229E, or OC43), human metapneumovirus, influenza A (H1N1pdm2009 or H3N2), influenza B, human parainfluenza virus (type 1, 2, 3, or 4), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus and enterovirus (which are not distinguished on the panel), or SARS-CoV-2; (2) symptomatic criterion including at least 1 new sign or symptom associated with a lower or upper respiratory infection following hospital admission; and (3) chronologic criterion including the onset of symptoms was on or after a minimum number of days from hospital admission specific for each virus’s maximum incubation period (see Supplementary Methods online).
To analyze monthly HARVI rates, we used a statistical process control u chart (implemented in QIMacros, KnowWare International, Denver, CO). The average monthly HARVI rate during a baseline period from January 2019 to December 2019 was used to calculate the initial centerline. Monthly data points were marked as out of control according to control chart analysis rules from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. 5 A centerline shift was made when there were 8 consecutive months above or below the centerline.
Results
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, our centerline for HARVI incidence was 7.07 infections per 10,000 patient days. At the start of the pandemic, the HARVI incidence decreased, with a centerline shift down to 2.60 infections per 10,000 patient days. However, an increase in HARVI incidence occurred from the late fall of 2021 through spring 2022 that resulted in a centerline shift back to the prepandemic baseline rate of 7.13 infection per 10,000 patient days. This increase coincided with the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.529 (omicron) variant wave and included relaxation of the hospital visitor restrictions policy and the end of universal admission testing in March and April 2022, respectively. When universal masking was discontinued in November 2022, we observed a sharp rise in HARVIs that exceeded our prepandemic baseline (Fig. 1a). This rise has been sustained for 8 consecutive months with rates above the centerline, resulting in another centerline shift to 12.88 infections per 10,000 patient days. Infections with rhinovirus and/or enterovirus have represented the largest proportion of HARVIs since November 2022, but other viruses including influenza, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2 have contributed to the total (see Supplementary Table 1 online). Time from admission to HARVI was similar throughout the observation period, with median intervals substantially greater than the maximum incubation periods for the viruses (Supplementary Table 2 online). Concurrently, there was a rise in definite or possible healthcare-associated COVID-19 cases from November 2022 through June 2023 (Fig. 1b). This increase occurred despite having a relatively low census of admitted patients with COVID-19 during this interval (Fig. 1c) and despite declining local prevalences of multiple respiratory viral infections including RSV and influenza (Fig. 1d and Supplementary Figs. 1–5 online).
TL;DR: UNIVERSAL MASKING KEPT PEOPLE FROM GETTING SICK IN HEALTHCARE. DROPPING UNIVERSAL MASKING IN HEALTHCARE LITERALLY INCREASED HEALTHCARE ASSOCIATED VIRAL RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS ACROSS THE BOARD.

Lynching victim Rubin Stacy’s story being told by his family in film screening at NSU
Tumblr media
Anne Naves knew something bad had happened to her uncle when her male relatives came home from fishing, each wearing a pall of silence. Dad wasn’t cracking jokes like usual. Grandfather looked grave. And her uncle, Rubin Stacy, hadn’t come back. The next day, someone from the funeral home said a body had been dropped off.
Naves, 8 years old at the time, only discovered the full gruesome truth about her uncle years later. On July 19, 1935, acting on an unproven accusation from a white woman, a masked lynch mob strung up Stacy under a Fort Lauderdale tree, hanged him and shot him 17 times as spectators gawked and children laughed.
The brutality and silence of Stacy’s lynching is revisited in the new documentary, “Rubin,” which will screen on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Nova Southeastern University. In the hourlong film, the farmhand’s death is recounted through the eyes of his surviving descendants, but mainly through Naves, who was the last living eyewitness to the trauma — and to the secrecy — that followed.
The film, the first to be made by relatives of Stacy’s family, also chronicles the history of lynchings in America, used as a tool of punishment and to foster silence.
“I think (my family) knew that, without telling us (kids) what really happened, they would save us a lot of trauma,” Naves says in the documentary. “The neighbors and our church members respected our silence, too, because they knew that if it could happen to our family, it could happen to theirs.”
For “Rubin” director Tenille Brown, who is a cousin of Rubin Stacy, the film has in recent weeks also morphed into something else: a posthumous tribute to Naves. After filming her interviews for the documentary, she died on Sept. 18 at age 96, leaving behind a strong legacy: She was a Broward County educator for 25 years, teaching at Pines Middle and other schools.
“The biggest piece of the film was Anne,” Brown says in an interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “Without her, there’s no story. She’s the driving force. She was ready to talk. She told me to record her. She really pushed me when I didn’t feel confident and said, ‘Record me anyway. Just go.’ ”
The rest of America witnessed the cruelty of Stacy’s lynching long before Naves did. A series of photos immortalize the moment when a white crowd gathered around Stacy’s body hanging from a tree. These images ran in newspapers nationwide, were published by the NAACP, Life magazine and National Geographic, and are now archived in the Library of Congress.
It was a tale of Jim Crow-era racism that Fort Lauderdale would’ve rather forgotten — the brother of a corrupt Broward County sheriff participated in the lynching — but city officials have made strides in recent years to acknowledge the tragedy by placing memorial markers around Fort Lauderdale. One is on Davie Boulevard and Southwest 31st Avenue, also known as Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, near where Stacy took his last breath. There’s another on the 800 block of Northwest Second Street, where he lived, and a third at Woodlawn Cemetery, his final resting place. In February 2022, a section of Davie Boulevard was renamed Rubin Stacy Memorial Boulevard.
“I’m glad they acknowledged it,” says Brown, of Pompano Beach. “These stories make some people in the state uncomfortable, but if they are based on fact, we need to tell the truth. You can’t turn your head. These are things you can’t ignore.”
For Brown, it was these memorials — and Naves’ willingness to break her silence — that motivated her to reconstruct Stacy’s story. To do so, she also interviewed Ken Cutler, Parkland commissioner and historian, and Tameka Bradley Hobbs, library regional manager of Fort Lauderdale’s African American Research Library and Cultural Center.
“My family didn’t want to talk about it out of fear for years,” Brown says. “There was shame. There’s an element of hurt, and you can hear that emotion in Anne’s voice. Now it feels freeing. This is a story that was suppressed for years and by sharing it, this is how we overcome.”
Michael Anderson, a producer for “Rubin,” says the film also tackles what too many school textbooks don’t stress enough: the history of Black lynchings.
“For Black youth to know their stories, they have to know the history of lynchings,” Anderson says. “They still don’t know how lynchings were used as a weapon to keep a community quiet. That’s exactly what it did to Rubin Stacy’s family.”

Why did you think adopting not one, not two, but five hybrids would ever be a good idea?
Yeah, sure. You had originally only settled on adopting one, but when you were told that this group was bonded you couldn't find it in yourself to split them up, let alone leave them behind.
"Alright, that’s the last of the paperwork! We'll be coming to inspect how the hybrids are doing in three months time. If we think that they're unhappy or being mistreated, we'll take them from you." The one employee said with a smile, handing you the boys' collars, all color coded and with their names on them.
There were leashes too, though you put that in your bag since you didn't want to completely restrain them.
"Thank you,” you mumbled, bowing as you left the small office to be met with a group of hybrids waiting outside for you nervously. When you came out they stood straighter, smiling at you with bright eyes. You laughed a bit awkwardly, bowing to them before giving them the most confident smile you could muster... Which turned out to be not so confident.
"Hi, guys. My name is Y/N and I'll be caring for you from now on." You cleared your throat, fiddling with the hem of your sweater. "I'll do my best." You said solemnly before clearing your throat one last time and going to put on everyone's collars, since you had already put your contact details on the inside. The first one you attached was to the tall brown haired hybrid, his Sheppard ears flicking excitedly as you neared him. His tail wagged at a fast pace, making you smile at him. You stood at just below his shoulder, so looking up to him had butterflies flying into the sides of your stomach. If you could, you wouldn't have them wear collars, but it was required by law for them to wear collars if they were in public to:
1. Show that they weren't stray or escaped and therefore potentially dangerous.
2. Be able to find their owners if they happened to get lost.
"You're Soobin..?" You asked the boy, your voice raising nearing the end to turn the statement into a question. He smiled at you as he nodded his head vigorously, his dimples making themselves present and attacking your heart.
"Yep!" He said cutely, his tail still wagging madly behind him.
"차, here we go, Soobin!" You said as you finished attaching his collar, standing back to admire how well the dark purple fit him.
Next was the eldest and one of the two cats of the group, a gorgeous gray tabby hybrid. He watched you closely, and the way he held himself practically screamed 'dripping with confidence'.
"Yeonjun?" You asked, feeling your heart hammering against your chest. You were pretty sure that they could all hear how loud it was beating, which made it ten times worse than it would've been.
"The one and only." He said, grinning at you cheekily while you leaned over his shoulder to attach his respective collar, a lime green color. You moved it slightly, swallowing nervously as your fingers brushed over the back of his neck. Immediately after Yeonjun was, who you believed, was the second youngest of the group and the last cat hybrid. You had been told that he was a Siamese hybrid, and immediately you were intrigued. Siamese were rare where you lived, so having one of your own would be a nice bragging right to have among your co-workers. You had apologized to him sincerely, telling him that you had forgotten his name to which he replied with a gentle smile.
"That's alright, noona. I'm Taehyun." He smiled at you, eyes boring through your soul. He had a shockingly deep red collar that highlighted his sharp features, which you told him quietly, making him blush.
Then, it was one of the most energetic of the lot, it seemed: A Jack Russell hybrid who was practically bouncing around on the balls of his feet, unable to hide his excitement. "Beomgyu." He said simply before you had even opened your mouth to speak, a grin plastered on his face at the way you pressed your mouth into a firm line. You attached his black collar to his neck, having to lightly push him away since he had moved forward to sniff your hair curiously.
And last but not least was the youngest, Heuningkai. You had remembered his name purely because it was so unique, and you were sure to tell him this. He grinned shyly, nodding his head and thanking you in a small voice. He was the other giant, probably only a few inches shorter than Soobin. His collar was a pretty white color, complimenting his creamy Corgi colors well. It was something that you hoped to God wouldn't get filthy, because it would be a pain in the ass to keep clean otherwise.
"Right. Before we leave this building, I have an important first rule." The boys' ears perked attentively as you addressed them, making you nervous again. They gave you their undivided attention and man, was your heart weak. "If you're outside on your own and you get lost, my number is on the inside of your collars. Your phones are waiting for you at home, and everyone's numbers have already been added to each phone, including my own." They nodded, looking at you with wide eyes and small smiles. With a grin you made them follow you into the van you had bought on a bit of a short notice, having to get a car big enough for everyone. Though it was still a bit crowded, Heuningkai and Taehyun squeezed together in the middle with Yeonjun and Beomgyu on the sides, Soobin sitting in the passenger seat.
What you had noticed first was that it seemed as if Soobin was the leader of the band of hybrids, which was to be expected, really. You think you remember hearing that he was second oldest, with Beomgyu being the 'middle-child'. While the thought popped into your mind, you looked into your rear view mirror. "I almost forgot to mention, but I'm a year older than you, Yeonjun." You said with a smile, turning back to the road to turn into that oh so familiar road.
“오디가요?” You heard Yeonjun ask from the backseat, and you couldn't help but smile.
"I wanted to make a quick stop at a café, to get something to drink. I hope you don't mind?" You asked the guys, looking around the car questioningly.
"No, it's fine!" Soobin said with a smile, his dimples springing out once more. You giggled, poking his cheek and unintentionally making him blush.
When you walked into the café, you ordered drinks for everyone, only Yeonjun having come with you to help you carry.
Heuningkai had gotten a hot-chocolate, Soobin settling for a plain and simple coffee. Taehyun got a frupachino, and Beomgyu got tea. When you asked what Yeonjun wanted, he had said he wanted an Americano, so that's what he was currently sipping at, your Iced-Tea standing out among the aray of warm drinks.
You arrived home a little later, showing them their room, the bunk-beds and one single bed in the room. "I dibs the single bed!" Beomgyu called with a grin, making you chuckle.
You clapped your hands together. “I'm going to start on dinner. Why don't the five of you go and watch some television in the mean time? The TV's out front." You said with a smile, the others scattering to the living room at a surprising speed.
You scrolled through your phone before setting up the group chat, the others already haven taken their phones. You looked up when you noticed Yeonjun, a smile spreading across your face. "Hey, Yeonjunnie. What's up?" He smiled at the pet name, tail flicking behind him as he came to stand next to you.
"그냥.. Wanted to see how dinner was coming along." He said with a somewhat hidden smile, sipping at his Americano.
"Ah, Yeonjun?"
"네?"
"You have something on your lip—"
"What? Where?” He wipes over his mouth. “Did I get it?"
"No, 여기~" You turned to stand in front of him, gently swabbing away the cream that had been on the corner of his upper lip... how it had gotten there though, you had no idea.
Yeonjun stood there with the straw of his drink still wedged between his teeth, tail stiff and ears leaning forward. You giggled cutely, flustered at the way he looked so dumbfounded by you, turning back to the food.
It was a few weeks later, and you had just come back from a quick run to the store to get the boys some new clothes, coming back home with well over five bags filled with mostly hybrid clothes, having gotten yourself one or two hoodies and a new pair of sneakers and jeans that you had liked.
You were sitting on the couch with Beomgyu, watching as Yeonjun and Soobin played Mario Cart together, laughing at the way they started screaming at each other angrily when the other pushed them off of the track or into some kind of obstacle. Beomgyu hadn't taken off his new hoodie since leaving the store six hours ago, and as cute as it was on him, you thought that he should at least've washed it first. You snapped a quick photo of him in it, posting it to your Facebook account that had recently gotten filled with pictures of you and the boys.
"Noona, come here~" Beomgyu hummed, bringing you to his chest to hug you to his form and rub his face against you. You giggled, lifting your arm to lightly pet his head, ruffling his hoodie ever so slightly. The action made him hum contentedly, holding you close to him as he put his chin on your shoulder. As soon as Yeonjun and Soobin ended their round the two of them turned around.
"Yah! We want cuddles too—" Soobin said with a pout as the two of them managed to also get some form of contact with you, Soobin playing with your fingers as he sat in between your legs, your hand resting over his Adam's apple, Yeonjun purring into your stomach as his hair was played with.
Later that same night, you were in your room reading when there was a knock on your door. "어? Hyunnie? What's wrong?" You asked, sitting up when a tired looking Taehyun walked toward you. He got under the covers with you, hiding his face in your side as he wrapped an arm around your waist.
"I had a nightmare and can't fall asleep..." He explained, holding you closer. "Can I sleep here for tonight, please?" He asked with a solemn look on his face.
"Of course, Hyun. Whatever makes you comfortable." You hummed, playing with his hair for a bit before watching him fall asleep and falling asleep yourself. Since then, it was a normal occurrence for Taehyun to share your bed, the others also joining you every once in a while.
It was the day after the examination, and you were quite bubbly, happy that you officially got to keep the boys. "Noona, are you even helping?" Heuningkai asked you with an angry pout, stopping as he dried off the dishes.
"Ah, yeah. Sorry, Hyuka. Did you say something?" You asked, continuing with your scrubbing.
"No, I didn't. But you just suddenly stopped moving."
"Yeah, well I was thinking—"
"Abour what? Donuts? Don't you think you should cut down on the—"
"Yah!" You shouted at him, a smile spreading to your face as he laughed, smiling at you brightly.
"Be glad I love you, Kai. Or else I would've broken your nose." You warned the Corgi hybrid with squinted eyes, a playful grin on your face.
"Yeah, yeah, you liar. You wanna play some basketball after this?" He asked, making you scoff over-dramatically.
"What a dumb question to ask—"
You stood there silent and stunned, watching as Hyuka giggled evily.
"Did you just splash me... With dirty water?" You snarled at him in disbelief, eyes shining dangerously.
"Possibly?"
"You piece of— get over here!" You screamed, laughing at how dolphin like he sounded while screaming, running outside towards the guys for help and hopefully protection.
