remus + reader ⋆ “hi. i know I’m calling at an inconvenient time but— i’m sitting on the roof of my car, staring up at the sky, thinking about you; about how you used to sit next to me on top of this very car, staring up at the sky with me, and telling me how you were so excited to become my forever. and I keep wondering… what happened to change that?”

you felt like a teenage girl all over again as soon as the string of words left your mouth. you couldn't help but bite your bottom lip and fidget your toes as you listened to his heavy breathing on the end of the line. you needed to know, did you do something wrong? did you change? weren't you as pretty as you once were? "darling, are you drunk?" were you? surely, but that being the first thing you hear him say after what you've asked makes you scoff in frustration, old habits die hard you supposed, while yours was to drink away your pain, his was to run away from it. two cowards in their own way. "that was the issue? the drinking?" you wonder for a second, maybe the same way his avoidance makes you want to crawl out of your skin, your less than sober blabbering did the same for him, and you never thought about that before. "no, dear—i—you didn't really drink too much—i—you just sound drunk..." you both stay silent for what feels like an eternity, and now you can physically feel the concern coming from just his breathing pattern, that's how much you knew that man, and that's definitely not why you called, not for concern, not for pity, you called for answers. but before you could try again, his soft voice takes you once more "you have s'much ahead of you, much more than this old man, and you're throwing it all in the bottom of a bottle, then?" the whole world stopped for a slip of a second, he never talked to you like that, and you weren't sure if he was angry or disappointed or anything else, but it felt like a knife to the chest and multiple to the back, you held in your breath and was only able to mumble a few what. "guess s'good i left, this isn't you." you couldn't even argue, the call finished before you could understand what was happening. this isn't you. this isn't you.
