Golden Fleece Glittering in the Sky

There’s an old phrase “all that glitters is not gold” from William Shakespear. The phrase meant to point out that outward appearances don’t always mean the true value of the item or person. Throughout history and myths gold is used to represent the eternal, unending, incorruptible, and embracing the powers of the divine. Sif, goddess of fertility and the harvest, had hair of gold that was so coveted by the gods. As a prank, Loki cut the golden locs from her head and they grew back black as night. Golden apples granted youth to the gods and goddesses in Norse Mythology as well. Olympus was a series of palaces made of marble and gold. Anything gold was deemed divine, and so there was always a bit of demand for gold. The color of gold even still is associated with the sun, and this is where we start with the story.

Many generations ago, the gods were present in all aspects of life. Hestia looking after the hearth and home, Athena guiding wartime strategies and knowledge, Hades judging the dead and keeping the underworld contained, Persephone aiding her husband and providing spring and bountiful harvests, and so many more. Poseidon, god of the sea, found a granddaughter of Helios, the titan of the sun, and took her as his consort. Using his divine abilities, he transformed them both into sheep so that her suitors could not find her as the god had his way with his mistress. She bore a son, a ram with glittering fleece of gold that glittered in the sun. He was named Chrysomallos, and he had wings that could carry him great distances. This golden fleeced, winged ram would bring salvation, joy, and death to individuals in its lifetime.

A cloud nymph who was made by Zeus in the image of Hera to trick a lustful guest at one of his feasts, Nephele was indeed beautiful. Her beauty allowed her to marry King Athamas and together they had twins, a boy named Phrixus and a girl named Helle. After a few years, Athamas grew tired of Nephele and sent her away, marrying another woman, Ino, instead. Ino hated her step-children and vowed to get rid of them somehow. So she devised a plot to get the king to slaughter his own son as a “sacrifice to the gods”. She roasted all the seeds meant to be planted, making sure they would not sprout. Then when the citizens went to the oracle, Ino bribed the men who made the trip to tell the rest of the people that Phrixus needed to be sacrificed. Nephele watched as her son was about to be slaughtered and she sent the winged ram Chrysomallos to save her children. The ram descended and picked up Phrixus and Helle before making his way back to his home. However, on the journey, somehow Helle fell from Chrysomallos’s back and died when she drowned in the water. The place that she fell became known as Hellespont, now called Dardanelles or the Strait of Gallipoli. Phrixus on the other hand, safely made it away from Athamas and Ino, as Chrysomallos spoke words of encouragement to him as they fled. When they were finally safe, in what’s now modern day Georgia, on the eastern most coast of the Black Sea, Phrixus sacrificed Chrysomallos to the gods, sending him back to his father, Poseidon. Poseidon put the ram into the sky as the constellation Aries so that all would know they would be watched over. Phrixus gave the golden fleece to a king in exchange for the hand of his daughter. That king would put it in a sacred garden of Ares, where Jason and the Argonauts would try and retrieve the item.

Aries season starts the zodiac cycle as it begins on the Vernal Equinox. Astronomical Spring, March 21st, begins the springtime season and is one of two days that is equal daylight and darkness. From March 21st to April 19th, Aries get their time to shine. They are the cardinal fire sign, the very first fire sign in the zodiac. This makes their temperament very dominant. Aries usually have a lot of problems with the head as that is their body part and they are ruled by the planet Mars. Aries are prone to headaches when there is too much energy around and they’re known for great drive in starting tasks and projects, but not at the followthrough and completion. Aries are known for their mantra of “I Am” as they view themselves as highly important and first in all things. For those who are great with the completion but not starting tasks, having an Aries in your life is the best thing. They will make sure you know how to do what needs to be done and then they will start helping, but leave you to finish it all up which is just the way you like it. Aries can be courageous, determined, confident, optimistic, passionate, enthusiastic, and bluntly honest when you look at them completely. On the flip side, they’re known for being impatient, moody, impulsive, short-tempered, and even aggressive on some occasions. The best thing for Aries when you get one in your life are to make sure they have comfy clothes, a leadership role of some kind, that they can engage in physical challenges, and that they can play individual sports like tennis. The things to never let happen with an Aries are inactivity, delays, and giving them work that doesn’t use their talents.

Aries people get along best with Leos and Libras and their lucky colors are red and mustard. The luckiest numbers are one, eight, and seventeen. Aries usually have their best days on Tuesdays and they align with the tarot card, the Emperor. A Candlenights Sermon

So five years ago a friend of mine said, "I grew up religious and I don't want anything to do with that anymore, but damn do I miss the good parts of a Christmas Eve service, like singing together and lighting candles!" and I said, "Well, what if we invent our own holiday? With singing? And candles?" and she said, "That sounds awesome!" and then we stole the name Candlenights from the McElroy brothers and I wrote a non-religious sermon and we rewrote our favorite carols to be secular and now, five years later, we have a new holiday tradition.

This is all backstory to explain what I'm about to share, which is my 2022 Candlenights sermon. Please join me if you would like to cry about space.

Hello, dear friends and dear family. We gather in the winter darkness once again, as we have for the last five years; as we have for our whole lives; as those who came before us have, on and on, back to the beginnings of people. Back to when the first monkey raised its head to look at the sky, and instead of only seeing the darkness, saw the stars.

Saw the light.

I think humanity fell in love right then, fell in love with the wide sprawl of the universe and all its secrets. Why else would we dedicate ourselves to it, as we have throughout time? Why else would we look at those sparkling lights in the velvet darkness and give them names and stories? Why would we do that, if it wasn’t to bring them closer to ourselves?

The first recorded evidence of constellations comes from 3000 BC in Mesopotamia, as our ancient ancestors sought to draw the stars out of the sky and know them better. We saw ourselves in them, and named them accordingly. "The Loyal Shepherd of Heaven," “The Seed-Furrow,” “The Farmworker.” Do you still know them? Do you recognize Orion, Virgo, and Aries? Did you know how far back our stories go?

The first telescope came in 1608, allowing us closer to the stars and the universe; allowing us to see the light we loved in greater detail, almost close enough to touch. We saw the craters on the moon; we saw Saturn’s rings for the first time; we looked at the cloudy arc of the Milky Way and learned that it wasn’t a cloud. It was more stars, each of them a tiny point of light.

America launched the first Orbiting Solar Observatory in 1962, and we could look at the stars from out there with them, as though we were one of them. We learned about gamma rays in our solar system and distant galaxies; observed solar flares from the Sun, our closest star; saw parts of stars that were previously unseeable, that we’d only dreamed were there.

The Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990, the culmination of twenty years of work by humans who loved the stars so much they fought through earthly concerns like budget issues and engineering mistakes; humans who were so devoted that three years later they made repairs to the Hubble in space to bring the stars closer. We saw things we could never have imagined, great beauty and great destruction, birth and death and so, so much light.

Last December the James Webb Space Telescope was launched after over twenty-five years of development, because we love the stars so much we can never be satisfied. Earlier this year we saw the culmination of that work, and oh, what a culmination. Hundreds of thousands of galaxies previously invisible to us. Nebulae we thought we knew from the Hubble shown to us in awesome detail. Stars being born among the corpses of supernovae. Stars. So many stars.

Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine the line of discovery that traces from our earliest ancestors all the way to us now. Imagine taking your ancient relative by the hand and sharing this knowledge. Imagine looking at the wide, unmapped sky together and telling them our stories, about their future descendants who loved the stars so much we found a way to go out among them.

Don’t you think that they would be proud? That no matter how far we’ve come, we still stand in the darkness and look for the light?

There’s a poem by Mary Oliver called The Summer Day. You may have heard the final lines before, as they’ve been co-opted to support hustle culture or grinding or working out or whatever else capitalism thinks it needs to sell us. I think that’s a shame, as the full poem is much kinder, and gentler, and wondrous than that. Let me read it for you now:

Who made the world? Who made the swan, and the black bear? Who made the grasshopper? This grasshopper, I mean-- the one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down -- who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away. I don't know exactly what a prayer is. I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields which is what I have been doing all day. Tell me, what else should I have done? Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do With your one wild and precious life?

I plan to live the way I want to live, and love who I want to love, and always look for the light wherever I can. I hope that you will join me.

“Ellie,” Beck says softly beside his daughter’s bed. She only harrumphs and flops to the other side. “Ellie Pumpkin Belly, it’s time to wake up.”

“No, it’s not,” she groans throwing her pillow over her head, and it only makes Beck chuckle.

“Eliana Rune Henry-Beck, it’s time to wake up.”

“Dad!” her voice hits a whining pitch. “It’s Saturday. I want to sleep.”

“I’ve got a surprise breakfast for you,” Beck turns to walk away. Sitting at the breakfast nook waiting for her.

Ellie takes a look around her room. Noodle curled up on her pillow, and the house is almost too quiet. With a look at her clock, she knows it’s abnormally quiet for this time of day. No wonder she got extra sleep she didn’t have an Atlas running in there to pull her toes.

She sighs but gets up. Noodle looks at her lazily before she lays back down. “Lazy butt,” Ellie starts to walk away but looks back at the fluff monster. “No, if I have to wake up, so do you,” walking over she picks up her fuzzy friend, and carries her into the kitchen, seeing her dad waiting patiently.

“Where is everyone?” she asks, before sitting an annoyed Noodle on the bench beside her. Sliding in front of Beck she looks at the plate of heart shaped pancakes.

“There’s crunchy cookie butter in the batter. Topped with whipped cream and your sprinkles that you made extra just for here.”

Ellie stares at him as she takes a bite of the rich pancakes. “This is full of sugar. This is not Aster Beck approved. Where’s my mom?”

Grabbing up his own fork, he takes a bite of Ellie’s pancakes. “And the cosmic twins. Where are they?”

“You missing your Attie and Rion snuggles?”

“Orion snuggles. Atlas pulls my toes in the morning.”

Beck gives out a belly laugh and takes another bite, sliding over another plate of sausage. “There’s the Aster Beck. Turkey sausage,” Ellie takes a bite and hums with satisfaction. Her favorite part of breakfast is a few sausage links. “You gonna answer me?”

“It’s been awhile since we’ve had an Ellie and dad day. And since it’s getting closer to Arianna,” Ellie turns her nose up in disgust.

“Her name will be Stella. It makes sense. She’s a star. Just like the rest of us.”

“We’ll see. I like the idea of her name ending in Anna like yours.”

“You know,” Ellie takes a bite of pancake and smiles. “The only reason mommy is entertaining that idea is, her nickname will be Ari.”

Beck furrows his brow thinking about it. “Your mom would name our daughter after uncle Airy wouldn’t she?” Ellie gives her famous little giggle, and gives Beck a big smile. “I thought we could go shopping today, maybe stop at the coffee shop. Go painting, whatever you want to do.”

“Ahh,” Ellie answers with a nod. “This is a Mickey Henry thing, huh? I’m fine.”

“This is a Beck and Ellie thing.”

“Why do you think he’s trying harder?”

“Ellie, do you think your mom and I are meant to be? Like how Iris and James are, your Mimi and Papa? Story and Carter? Blade and Lo, Chris and Lucy, and even Ari, Curtis, and LP?” she nods her head and looks down at her pancakes. Unsure of where this conversation is going or what to say.

“If your dad and mom made it work, where would I be? And Atlas and Orion, and possibly Stella?”

“The twins and Stella wouldn’t be here.”

“They wouldn’t. You came from Mickey and Aster. If I met your mom before Mickey, there wouldn’t be you. And I don’t think the world could handle that. There wouldn’t be this dimpled girl, with her soft curls, pouty lips, Mickey Henry eyes, with the best giggles, the best midfielder I know, the sweetest big sister, and who would be Otto’s twin?” Ellie laughs despite her tears. Wiping at her long dark lashes, and picks up Noodle.

“Ellie I don’t know what was special about Suzette that made your dad want to change. The good thing is he did. Don’t you get to see him more often?”

“Well, yeah.”

“Doesn’t that mean, you get the best tickles more often?” she nods her head. “He comes to your games. He’s even picked you up at school. Your dad is trying. Pumpkin,” Beck leans over the small table, and tilts her head up to look at him. “Your dad has always loved you. Your mom and dad just weren’t good. And that’s okay. She found her person, and I hope he found his. He hurts because he’s realizes how much he missed with you. He’ll never be able to get any of that time back. But he’s trying now. I know your mom and dad still argue, but that’s because your mom wants him to be the best he can be. I also know this time is confusing to you, and maybe you need to talk to him about how you’re feeling, so he understands what you’re feeling is valid. It’s okay for you to be angry, to be confused. It’s okay for you to say that today, you don’t like your dad.”

Ellie gasps, “Daddy…dad, that’s not nice.”

“Do you always like me or your mom? Or when Atlas pulls your toes, do you like him?” she looks at him understanding a bit more what he’s saying. “But, we always love each other. Ellie, I know I didn’t get to see you take your first steps, or hear your first words. But I taught you to ride a bike with no training wheels. I help you with your soccer. I’ve helped you with science projects, taken you to dentists appointments, held you when you’ve had a nightmare, and I know we’ll have so many more memories. But I don’t want to take his place. I just want to be a bonus dad. Not every kid gets to have two. And now that Mickey is there, he gets to have moments with you. But I also want you to put your trust me. I do not care if it’s three o’clock in the morning, I’ll be right there with you. I didn’t just marry your mommy, I married you too.”

“What should I call you?”

“After all that, you still want to know what to call me?” he giggles but stands to go sit beside her. “As long as you’re not calling me a poopy face, I don’t care. If you want to call me Becks again, I’m okay with that too. I want you to be comfortable. Now, instead of me making you cry, why don’t you go get dressed. We’ll go shopping and then get coffee okay?”

“Don’t twist my arm, dad,” leaning up she gives a kiss to his cheek and smiles. “Thanks. I love you. Maybe, a movie later. But here, with candy and popcorn, and my brothers.”

“Sounds amazing, Pumpkin.”

Crimson Age: 10 Parents: Cuphead and Angel Bio: Crimson is a pretty chill kid. She's a goth who loves to go on adventures, especially with her family. She's got some street smarts and knows the Isles from 1-3 by the back of her hand. She also hates the thought of immortality. Likes: Goth stuff, hanging out, adventures, loved ones, helping others, and the color red. Dislikes: The thought of immortality, people making fun of goths, seeing people get hurt, and losing loved ones. Abilities: Firing fire projectiles, transforming into a reverse mermaid, dodge rolling, and access to all of the weapons and charms. Coral Age: 7 Parents: Mugman and Cora Bio: Coral loves the sea and is best friends with Winifred. She's a bit of a scaredy cat though. It doesn't mean that she won't go on adventures with Crimson, as long as it's not too dangerous. She also has a big fear of blood too. He wants to spread awareness about the hardships that genies go through, by teaching people in a be careful what you wish for. He enjoys cautionary tales and his favorite show is Grizzly Tales. He knows every cautionary tale in the book, especially if their be careful of what you're wish for stories. Likes: Cautionary tales, when bad people get their comeuppance, sweets, healthy food, making wishes come true, helping others, giving good advice, and his lamp. This is because, she can't turn her tail into legs. She has an eel, a squid, dog fishes, and a shark. She's the most brave out of the gang. She also wants to go to the Fourth Isle so much. Winifred cares a lot about her mom and dad and sometimes worries about them. Likes: Adventures, pirate ships, caves, stories, sea creatures, the land, the sea, traveling, fighting bad guys, finding treasure, and her loved ones. Dislikes: Sea food, seeing someone drown, being made fun of for not being able to turn into a human, being called Winnie, and being bored. Abilities: Able to turn into a gorgon hybrid and back, sword fighting, able to temporarily turn people into stone, and super sight.

Penelope and Peter Stage Play Age: Penelope: 8 Peter: 6 Parents: Sally Stage Play and Her Husband Bio: Penelope and Peter are stage performers. Penelope is prideful, self centered, and very spot light stealing. On the other hand, Peter is a bit shy and he rarely wants to go on stage, with is okay with his mother, usually wanting to be a background character. He prefers to work backstage and help on the stage set. However, if pressured by his sister, would want to outshine her as the main character. Despite their rivalry, they care for each other. Likes: Penelope: Playing as the main character, stealing the spotlight, singing, tap dancing, dress up, and being loud and proud. Peter: Outshining his sister, being the background character or stage set person, and being quite. Dislikes: Penelope: Having the spotlight stolen from her, silence, being told to be quite, and being a side character. Peter: Stage fright, loud sounds, being pressured into doing something, doing something wrong, and being bullied. Abilities: Tap dancing, singing, stage play, smarts, and street smarts. Cassie Age: 16 Parents: Djimmi the Great and Beppi the Clown (Don't worry, it's a three way ship.) Bio: The older half sister of Julius, Cassie is even more powerful than him. However, she can't control her powers so she has a belt to minimize her power of her magic, which she doesn't mind. Like her half brother, she sleeps in a lamp, but she sometimes gets stuck in the lamp. So someone with have to rub her lamp. She can grant wishes, but they usually goes array, not like with her brother, who makes the wishes go array because of a careful what you wish for instance. (Yes I purposely made her face look like Ena's face.) Likes: Having fun, helping others, wish granting, dessert, and playing with sands. Dislikes: Unable to control her powers, losing her belt, when wishes go array, and being stuck in her lamp. Abilities: Wish granting, teleportation, and unknown amount of powers.

Dorothy Devil Age: 1 Parents: Devil and King Dice Bio: Dorothy's the little sister to Dahlia Devil. She's the sweetest out of the two sisters and has eyes like King Dice's. Dorothy's very friendly to all the people who work at the casino. She enjoys being babysat by her sister and the other patrons. Likes: Sleeping, blocks, levitating, the patrons, her family, and playing. Dislikes: Waking up early, getting hurt, having too many Band-Aids on her, getting stuck, and seeing her friends get hurt. Abilities: Levitation, dream traveling, desire seeing, X-Ray vision, spirit talking, and other unknown abilities.

Team RWBY's Extended Zodiac Signs: My Thoughts

Hey, some stuff happened today and I want to take my mind off it for a bit, so I'm gonna try something that's different than what I usually do but have kind of wanted to try out for a while. I don't know if I'll do anything else like this or if this is a one off thing, but it just seemed like a fun way to write down some thoughts on some characters through the lens of a particular medium.

For those who don't know already, the Extended Zodiac is an extension of the constellation zodiacs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc) made for a video game called Hiveswap, which is a spinoff of a webcomic called Homestuck (which you may or may not have heard of). The constellation zodiacs are combined with two other elements- Lunar Sway and Aspect- to create 288 unique signs, each of which offers a more particular explanation of your personality and thought patterns. Whether you think the zodiac is a bunch of hoopla or the absolute bomb, it can be fun to take the quiz (linked here) and learn more about yourself and find your True Sign. Or do what I'm doing, and take fictional character's birthdays and personalities to figure out what categories they fall into. Or create a trollsona for them.

And the other half of this, for those who don't know: RWBY (pronounced "ruby") is an animated series following the members of the titular team RWBY: Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long, a group of young women who are preparing to become huntresses, which are heroes who protect the world from the dangerous creatures of Grimm (keep in mind, this synopsis is for the first volume/season, and the show has recently finished showing its ninth; the story has changed VERY much from volume one. You can watch the very first trailer for the show here)

Anyway, relatively recently (as in September of three years ago), the official RWBY Twitter/X account announced the official birthdays of our heroines (linked here), and given the personalities of the characters, their birthdays were very... interesting, to say the least. So I've decided to look into their Extended Zodiacs to find out more about them. It's possible this has already been done by someone else, in a way more detailed (read: better) way, but like I said: this is mostly for me, to get my mind off of some stuff right now.

So without further ado, here's my thoughts on the Extended Zodiac of Team RWBY, below the cut! (Spoilers for RWBY and Homestuck, of course!)

Ruby Rose - October 31

Scorus - Sign of the Victorious (Scorpio, Prospit, Breath)

Played for a joke, but very official: Ruby's birthday is the same day as Halloween, making her a Scorpio. This surprised me, considering that the Extended Zodiac is quick to tell you that Scorpios "are the ones to watch... they have the potential to do the most good, but also cause the worst harm."

Of course, most people are quick to jump on the "worst harm" aspect of Scorpios, given the reputations of Homestuck's Scorpio characters (...Does this make Ruby a Vriska?) So what's going on here? Was the choice of birthday simply a joke that got cemented in canon?

Not necessarily. Throughout the show, and especially more recent volumes, Ruby has always done what she believes is best for the good of her friends and the world, with incredibly varied results. Whether she intended it or not, Ruby has been at the center of some great goods and terrible harms, which fits very snuggly with her Scorpio sign. Scorpios are also "all in" types, "willing to throw themselves into work, play, and everything in between", and you can easily point to many scenes throughout the series to prove how this fits Ruby (a fan favorite, and a personal favorite, is the food fight scene from Volume 2).

Okay, so Ruby's a Scorpio, but that's not all this is. This is where things get a little fuzzy, because some people's interpretation of her character are vastly different from what I'm about to talk about. But let's start with her Lunar Sway: for Ruby, I chose Prospit.

Some people hear Prospit and think "ah, yes, the optimistic and silly one". But Prospit (and Derse for that matter) aren't nearly that simple. Prospit Dreamers are described as "reactive and intuitive... making decisions (based on) gut instinct and whatever emotions they are experiencing in the moment". They do tend to be optimistic, but the site is quick to point out that it's a FLEXIBLE optimism, meaning it can be prone to dwindling or growing stronger depending on the situation.

Ruby is creative and emotional, (and yes, optimistic). It can be argued that many of her choice were based on what emotions she was feeling at the time of the choice, ranging from her choice to defend Pyrrha Nikos from the Grimm even after her accidental involvement in Penny's first death, to choosing to lie to Ironwood about the lamp after the truths it revealed about Ozpin. Ruby cries a lot on the show (many of the characters do, and really, can you blame them?), but she's also quick to smile and laugh and offer encouragement (and in volume nine, her patience wears out and she gets angry, which leads to a lot of rash words and choices in itself).

There can also be some argument for symbolic representation, too; namely that Ruby's silver eyes can flash a light that scatters the Grimm (to ashes). Prospit being the "light" moon, pressed right against the bright glow of Skaia, is a pretty fitting choice for someone who holds the powers of the God of Light. Fun stuff!

Now that leaves the last part of the Extended Zodiac, and easily the most debatable part, mostly because there are twelve different choices based on personality, which again, can be interpreted differently from person to person. For Ruby, I ended up with Breath, though my other choices were Hope, Blood, and Life, for varying reasons.

The typical personality traits for a Breath player are: motivated, adaptable, forward thinking (positive), and volatile, gullible, and avoidant (negative). Being the leader of Team RWBY, Ruby has had to learn to motivate herself and others towards their common goals, be able to adapt to changes both on the battle field and in her relationships, and has spent most volumes looking forward (a very famous line by the creator of the show, Monty Oum) to what can be done next; how to next achieve her goals. But she can also be gullible, either for something innocent like a snide comment from Weiss (typically in the earlier volumes) or something much more dangerous, like Cinder's (in my opinion) not so secret infiltration of Beacon Academy. Then in the most recent volume, when Ruby loses her cool, the other characters would probably call her outburst "volatile", here meaning "a rapid and unexpected change, typically for the worse" (though really, we all knew it was a long time coming).

There's also that little hidden bit of lore about the aspects: Breath and Blood players tend to be considered leaders, for one reason or another (this doesn't mean that all "leader" characters are either Blood or Breath, necessarily, but it's a fairly consistent pattern in Homestuck, with John and Karkat being the unofficial/official leaders of their friends). Breath players in particular "will routinely be surprised that others look up to... them". This can be seen with Ruby's surprise at being chosen as the leader of Team RWBY by Ozpin in Volume 1, and later on by characters like Blake and Jaune, with Blake in particular holding great respect for Ruby as a leader.

And technically, there's one more thing; a fourth part to choosing someone's true sign: their "Word". I don't think this is officially a major part of the Extended Zodiac, but each sign is given their own word that represents them, a sort of "title" in its own right, and as you saw at the top, the "Word" for a Scorpio, Prospit, and Breath combination is: "The Victorious."

Victory is in a simple soul, indeed.

Weiss Schnee - May 15

Tauries - Sign of the Unsatisfied (Taurus, Derse, Time)

Funny story: it turns out that Weiss' birthday is very close to mine! I'm also a Taurus! I'll admit, I wasn't expecting Weiss to be a Taurus, though after comparing the details to what Weiss is like, I can see the connections.

The opening lines of the "Taurus" explanation are what really caught my eye for Weiss: they have a "warm and generous disposition, though you might not accuse them of it the first time you meet. They (can be) withdrawn and slow to open up... (they can) come off as arrogant and cold, like they think they are too good for everyone." That's basically Weiss' whole character arc in the early volumes! Weiss spends her early screen time living up to her nickname "Ice Queen", acting like a spoiled rich girl with a heart as cold as ice ("acting" might be putting it gently). But over time, she grows and learns along with her teammates and friends, showing off her warmer, gentler side in the later volumes.

Another thing to note is that Taurus' can be hedonistic, filling their homes with beautiful things if they have the means. No one's got an eye for luxurious items like the Ice Queen herself!

Next up is her Lunar Sway, which was a pretty obvious choice for me. Derse dreamers are skeptics, dissatisfied with almost everything in their lives. "Rebellion is in their blood... whether they are fighting back against a fascist dictatorship or the most recent trend in casual footwear." Again, Weiss' whole character arc! Despite being "born with all that (she) need(s), (her) comforts all guaranteed", Weiss is rebel through and through. Whether she's pinning her hair up asymmetrically, singing a rock opera rejection of her father's ways, or straight up disobeying and bending some rules to accomplish the team's goals, Weiss rebels in pretty much every way she can. Her shrewd and calculating mind doesn't hurt, either, leading to a perfectionist attitude and an aversion to unfamiliar situations that is very common for Derse Dreamers.

Now for her aspect. I kind of wanted her to be a Heart player, since it would fit with her theme of "Who am I, I'm the loneliest of all", but it didn't fit quite right, so I ended up with something more straightforward: Time.

Practically going hand in hand with Derse, "those bound to the aspect of time are fighters, full stop." They hate sitting still and looking pretty, and would much rather do anything and everything they can to fix a problem. Sound familiar? Weiss' personality fits pretty well here: she can be very empathetic to her friends and will relentlessly do her best to solve a problem (in particular, that brief scene from Volume 2 where she stubbornly tries to get a flower in a vase to stand up straight comes to mind). But of course, speaking of the earlier volumes, we get some of her worse traits: she can be ruthless to those she deems unworthy, gets very defensive of herself and her family name, even though she's aware of some of the less-than-stellar things her father's done, and can get impulsive when she's angry (Volume 1 is a big part of this).

Then of course, there's her Word: the Unsatisfied. That basically describe Weiss' whole arc: dissatisfied with the comforts and seeming perfection of her family, aware of the misdeeds done by her father, and aiming to do better, be better, Weiss fights to turn wrongs into rights, and won't be satisfied until everything's just so.

Blake Belladonna - January 19

Caprittarius - Sign of the Rift (Capricorn, Derse, Void)

In a world where some consider her only half a person, Blake is actually the highest ranking character on the hemospectrum (and ironically, Ice Queen Weiss is the lowest). I wasn't sure what I thought Blake would be, but it wasn't a Capricorn. But then I did a deeper dive, and things make a little more sense!

Capricorns are workaholics, stubborn and determined to reach their goal, their way. It can be difficult to change their minds, whether it's a political choice or a preference in restaurants. All of the characters in RWBY work hard, but you could argue that Blake's been working hard for the longest. Her younger life is marked with a stubborn need to bring equality and peace to the Faunus, and she continues to show that stubborn loyalty to who she is in later volumes, too (think of the scene in Volume 9 when the tree smoke's illusion suggests she could choose to be either a cat OR a human). One of the biggest things about Blake's zodiac, though, is her dedication to her goals and her relationships: "utterly, and without hesitation". (Her promise to Yang in particular comes to mind).

Next is her moon, which is fairly easy to pick: Derse. Yes, there's her rebellious streak, joining a revolution to fight for rights, even if not everything they did was legal, but it's more about Blake's thought process for me. Derse Dreamers are "great problem solvers, facing conflicts head-on with shrewd, calculating minds". Knowledge and problem solving is a big thing for Blake, be it from the books she reads or applying what she knows to strange situations (such as making the connection between the Ever After in Volume 9 to Alyx's story).

Now her aspect... I really wanted her to be a Light player, mostly because it would be a perfect foil to her color scheme, but as fitting as the aspect would have been... the Word didn't fit right. A Capripia (Capricorn, Derse, Light) is referred to as "the Brusque", a word that means "abrupt or offhand in speech or manner". Blake isn't afraid to say what she thinks, but something didn't sit right with me there. Blake typically puts a lot of thought into her words (I imagine she has to, being a member of a revolutionary organization and all). She's straightforward, not "abrupt". So, as fitting as Light was for her, I decided to look elsewhere. (Mind was a close second, but again, the word didn't fit).

Finally, I ended up with Void. Sure, haha, the character with the black color scheme gets the Aspect of darkness, but it's much more than that. A void player values potential, seeing possibilities where others see nothing. "A blank page, an empty canvas, that's what the Void-bound live for". More importantly, though, a Void player tends to cast doubt on things that are considered fact. What's a better fit for a revolutionary than that? Especially during the earlier volumes, Blake casted a lot of doubt on the status quo of several characters, namely Weiss and Ruby. For Weiss, casting doubt on Weiss' certainty that all Faunus are evil, and for Ruby, casting doubt on Ruby's ideal dream of becoming a hero like in fairytales.

And, of course, there's her personality traits: wise, intuitive, and vibrant at her best. Bookishness aside, Blake's done a lot for someone her age, and has some experience to back up her knowledge, even if some of it was skewed at one point or another. Despite her more withdrawn nature, she can be a pretty vibrant and happy person, too (waving a flag for the team in Volume 1, getting excited and a bit silly over tuna), and her experience gives her a good bit of intuition to utilize, too. Then the less positive traits: Blake was pretty dismissive and apathetic in the earlier volumes, as the "boring bookworm" type character. Later on, she was shown to be indecisive, leaving everyone behind without an explanation after the fall of Beacon (I interpret her departure as an inability to decide to face her past with her friends, especially in the wake of Yang losing her arm, though I'd understand if people made differing arguments).

Finally, the main reason I chose Blake's True Sign, her Word: "the Rift". Blake is very much known for the rifts she has a tendency to leave in groups she's been a part of. She created a rift between herself and her parents by sticking with the White Fang, even when they started being less peaceful. Then she created a rift between her and her past, hoping to escape the people and things she was a part of. Later, she brings a rift between Ruby and Yang, by leaving when Yang was at her lowest, which in turn lead to Yang not joining Ruby for her Volume 4 journey with the remnants of JNPR. Later again, Blake created a rift between Adam and the White Fang (though really, that was Adam's fault). It's practically Blake's bread and butter.

Yang Xiao Long - July 28

Lecer - Sign of the Loyalist (Leo, Prospit, Blood)

Hotter than the sun in the middle of July, Yang is a Leo! I figured someone like Yang would be a summer child, so Leo was a choice I was prepared for. It's a little easier to find connections when you were already expecting a certain option.

Leos are described as agreeable, lucky, generous, and a little bossy, which is already a fitting start for Yang (at least, in the earlier volumes). Yang is quick with affirmation and affection for people she cares about, while still being a domineering girlboss when she's on the hunt for important information (her trailer is easily a prime example of this.) Admittedly, her luck runs out pretty quickly in Volume 3, and while a typical Leo would ride out a rough patch fairly quickly, it takes at least a few months for Yang to get back up, armed and ready. But she does get back up, and that's more than some people can say after a traumatic experience like losing your arm! Especially for someone as fist oriented (or should I say, handy) as Yang!

Leos can also be known to hold a grudge, which is another factor of Yang's long recovery time. Not only had she lost her arm, she lost her partner and friend Blake without so much as a goodbye, and it took until the end of Volume 5 at MINIMUM (I say closer to the end of Volume 6) to forgive her and reach an understanding.

Surprisingly, picking Yang's Lunar Sway was the most difficult one for Team RWBY. Yes, Prospit is the obvious choice, being the golden moon and all, but for most of the earlier volumes, Yang was stuck in the past due to her mother disappearing, and Derse Dreamers are very much about analyzing the past. Eventually, though, Prospit won out, because Yang finally decided to stop looking for answers from her mom in Volume 5, instead living in the present with the family she chose with her sister and her friends. Yang's slightly more capricious attitude (a word meaning "sudden changes in moods or behavior"; think of how quick she can fly into a rage when her hair gets pulled in the earlier volumes!) is also fitting for a Prospit Dreamer. So there you go.

Technically, I think Time is a better fit for Yang than anything, but I kind of wanted to give each character their own aspect (which isn't realistic, of course, though we've never once seen an official Homestuck session with multiples of the same Aspect). After hunting around for a while (Rage was a very tempting choice), I ended up deciding on Blood for Yang. There are lots of good points here! Blood players "draw their strength from bonds, from the trust and camaraderie that blooms among a group of people who share a single vision". With Team RWBY in particular making special attack combinations out of the unique relationships between each member (such as Freezer Burn for Yang and Weiss, or Bumblebee for Yang and Blake), I think I can safely say that all of these characters draw strength from their relationships. Yang in particular, though, noticeably has a private moment alone with each of her team members. For Blake, it was in Volume 2, when Yang explained her journey to find her mom in order to convince Blake to rest. For Weiss, in Volume 5, Yang opened up to her in private about her feelings on Blake's apparent abandonment. Yang and Ruby likely had many moments like this, being sisters and all, though my mind in particular goes to volume 8, when the two talked about the Grimm Beast with silver eyes and their own separate failures and successes on their individual missions (The RWBPN and ORYJ arcs, though I'm sure there's a better name for them than that).

Finally, her personality traits lend themselves pretty well to being a Blood player, too: Yang is charismatic, uplifting, and magnetic, even to her enemies (again, the Yellow Trailer), and still able to crank out some one liners even when fighting dangerous enemies ("I! HOPE! YOU'RE! HUNGRY!" from Volume 1 and "I'm not done with you yet!" from Volume 9). Her lowest moments are good examples of a Blood player's less positive traits, too: especially during Volume 5 (I'm not counting Volume 4 because she was in her own house that whole volume), she can be sullen and set in her ways, having this sort of dull expression when dealing with anything less than what she deems important to her, even during the fight with the bandits in the woods. She's occasionally a bit unkind, too, getting a bit snippy and impatient when things don't go well. It works out!

And now, my final point: Yang's Word is: "the Loyalist", which is pretty darn fitting for her, I think. Yang is intensely loyal to all her friends, and while she may need a break every now and then to do her own thing (looks at Volume 8), she always returns to support her loved ones in their fight against the darkness. Something interesting to note is how a loyalist tends to be loyal to the status quo, typically in a government type situation. I guess that would make her friendships and love her status quo? It's something to think about.

I’m 98% sure I’m accidentally going to end up rambling with this and also this may seem like a outta left field ask so... fair warning and I’m sorry in advance if it comes off as ‘huh?’ or something like that.

I’ve been out of the loop for a few days now and just logged on to see the Constellations Ask Game.

Personally, I love love LOVE comparing different methods like

horoscopes

zodiac

astrology/constellations

birth signs

cartomancy (probably one of my favs - I find this one really interesting)

tarot cards (both different and similar to cartomancy and vice versa... but, my opinion, these 2 methods are more different than they are similar)

palmistry

numerology

pendulums

spirit animals

and other fortune/horoscope telling methods/tools from all over the world through history. Practices like these and others alike that are scattered through history can seem small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things with everything that’s happened throughout the centuries...

but things like this, knowing the symbolism of something can give you a better insight of understanding different religions, mythologies, demonology, art, cinema, literature, etc. etc. because at the end of the day, when there isn’t much to go on, how symbolism is interpreted by someone and then used in whatever belief or work; based off of said interpretation can lead you to draw allegories between works, beliefs, or societies you probably would’ve never thought could’ve gotten something from one another; regardless if it was conscientiously or not - symbolism can open the doors to questions like

Why did this culture choose this to represent that?

Were they an isolated society that made it up on their own or could they have learned it from someone/somewhere else?

What was the interpretation then and the connection to how it is viewed today?

What allegorical conclusions can be drawn between this method ‘originated’ at point a and that method ‘originated’ at point b - if these two cultures are on opposite sides of the world and had to foreseeable means of communication with each other?

Etc. Etc.

& That’s one of my favorite aspects about Black Clover other than the story itself and the captain/magic-knight eye candy: Tabata’s use of symbolism and mythology is a talent in of itself; the way he dissects the tiniest context of something from various European mythologies and then uses it to his full advantage to hide in the crevices of a character, continually builds upon each reference and said reference(s) will start to reveal itself(themselves) as the character(a) develops throughout the progression of the story... sorry that was a bit of a tangent - but Tabata’s use of these things throughout Black Clover is so ingenious he deserves recognition and praise for that aspect of his storytelling...

I’m rambling aren’t I? (i warned you at the beginning this wasn’t going to be a conventional ask, sorry if I keep getting off topic) SO THE POINT OF THIS ASK — THE CONSTELLATIONS ASK GAME – I already knew there was a whole plethora of constellations named after figures in Greek mythology... however I was only briefly aware of a handful of Greek Mythology constellations that were used in astrology personality/horoscope predictions like our typical western Aries/Taurus/Gemini/Cancer/Leo(plod)/Virgo/Libra/Scorpius/Sagittarius/Capricornus/Aquarius/Pisces.

Dang it! I was rambling again wasn’t I? Stop rambling me! MY POINT IS: this ask game is one of the first times I’ve seen this many Greek Mythology constellations used that are apparently also used similarly to western zodiac astrology/horoscopes...

But let me, let me try to get a hold of this first 😅

Okay, so:

I am not that well versed in mythology, but I do have a kind of fondness for it.

Andromeda & Cassiopeia: I believe that she was a princess in Greek mythology, the daughter of Cassiopeia. And the story goes that Cassiopeia boasted about being the most beautiful, which angers Poseidon. And Poseidon then sends a kind of sea monster (or a dragon) to torment the nation. Andromeda is to be sacrificed for the beast in an effort to calm it, but she gets saved Perseus (who later marries her and makes her his queen). And "Andromeda" apparently means "Ruler of men".

I don't know if the name "Cassiopeia" means anything, but it seems to be connected to beauty.

Corvus: It's a constellation that was known as "Raven" in some point, and was apparently one of the constellations that marked the Gates of the Underworld. So, an omen of death.

Hydra: Hydra was also another constellation to mark the Gate to the Underworld, and a general symbol/omen for death. Of course, there's the Hydra that Heracles defeated as his 12 heroic acts.

Draco: I might be mistaken, but I believe that Draco might be another name for Hyra. (If anyone knows better, please do correct me)

Persei: Is a triple star system, that I suspect is referring to Perseus. (Or named after Perseus)

Pyxis: I have no clue.

Okay, I'll... I'll answer on the longer list of constellations a bit later (because I need to wrap my brain around it). But I thought that I'd give a little something already now so that I don't keep you hanging 😅

Primarily Karra shows a deep interest in Mirage’s magic affinity of Forcefield and sees unlimited potential in him and tells him every time whenever he used his magic yet Mirage does get nervous when’s he’s openly compimented leading Mirage in being a hot red mess however Karra tries to control this and not openly compliment him.

Noelle is Karra’s mentor and the will carrier of Noelle’s legacy of the light triad. Despite their difference in magic affinities Noelle always wanted a student like how Mereoleona was to her mother Acier then Karra came along and made her life a little more brighter. Destiny’s Gateway

The vertex is a magical point in any natal chart, but its meaning varies according to the nature of the chart holder, the house, the sign, and the degree where it lands. That point says something very specific about your life path, your interests, and your attitudes. You can calculate this by going to astro.com and selecting it as an option under “extended chart selection.”

The vertex typically lands in the 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th houses -- the houses that are most affected by our relationships with others.

He jolted up. Heavy breaths. Eyes stinging. Rapidly glancing around the dark room. It was a few minutes later Nebraska realised tears were streaming down his face, though he couldn't find his voice, instead just sobbing silently to himself, shaking. He knew he was supposed to do something-- but what was that? Nebraska clutched the sheets tightly, resting back against the pillows and bringing his knees up to his chest.

How pathetic. He curled up more. A soldier of his calibre, recruited because he was supposedly the best, and deserved a place here, sitting here crying over a nightmare.

It had seemed so real.

Nebraska's breathing grew quicker and his eyes shifted to the mist of darkness surrounding his quarters, and he subconsciously pulled the sheets up closer to him. The silence weighed heavy on him, the only other sound his breaths and occasionally, the sound of patrolling footsteps outside. Every time he heard that, he froze, holding his breath involuntarily, not wanting whatever was out there to hear him. To hurt him. To hurt Ari.

Hours later, he was still awake, thinking to himself, and the tears still streamed. Time was awful out in space. No sun to leak through the blinds, to push away the crushing darkness with purifying light. Sometimes getting up and turning the light on felt like the hardest thing in the world.

When it felt as if someone was going to leap at him from the shadows.

How was it, that he could take hits from the best soldiers in the program - Carolina, Maine, even an angry South Dakota - and yet now he didn't believe he could defend himself from someone waiting in the shadows. Perhaps it was because they'd go for Ari instead. And it'd be his fault. His fault for leaving her alone.

Ari caught on as soon as he wouldn't remove his helmet in the break room with her. Nebraska was always weird about things like that, having the helmet helped him keep conversation a little easier sometimes, since he technically didn't have to look someone straight in the eye whilst he spoke to them, and it seemed to bolster his confidence. Or at least his ability to form coherent sentences when in the distracted mood he was in now without wondering what others would think of him.

"You've been awake all night again, haven't you?"

The silence was telling enough. His eyes would tell the same story, and Nebraska knew it wouldn't have been long enough for the red tear stains to have gone away. He hated having to look at himself in the mirror when it happened.

Ari didn't continue the matter, but Nebraska knew this wasn't over from the way she stared at him for a few moments with squinted eyes to say just that.

So when he headed back to his quarters once he was off duty to hopefully get a few hours of sleep, Nebraska wasn't surprised to see Ari there. He still couldn't help but to ask, "What are you doing here? Shouldn't you have patrol soon?"

"Yeah, but I have a few minutes. And I wanna see if I can help."

Nebraska was about to retort. He didn't need help, he was fine, he could deal with it, but as soon as he opened his mouth to speak, Ari did instead.

"Ethan." His real name got him to shut up very quickly, almost making him feel guilty. He so rarely thought to use their real names now. "I found somethin' a while ago and thought it might be cool to put up. Maybe could help you a little?"

And she-- she pulled out those little space sticker things that glow in the dark. Nebraska frowned, "I'm not a fucking kid--"

Ari narrowed her eyes and he was quick to quieten. He shouldn't've spoken to her like that. To be fair, he'd always loved them when he was a kid. It had helped him sleep, just to have something to look at that wasn't the dark. Though, as a kid, it was just the darkness itself, not really the dreams. He hadn't seen most of the things he had now back then. Nebraska didn't worry about Ari getting shot, or killed in some other way, or taken away from him back then.

Admittedly, he thought it would help in the same way it did when he was younger. Something to look at to distract him, something that was a reminder of her, and something that didn't have sharp edges, a reminder of danger, like the guns and knives that lay scattered across the room, even if they were supposed to be in the armoury. Just in case.

So with a huff of defeat, he let her stick them to the roof. What would the other Freelancers think of this?

Icy blue eyes shot open, blown wide with fear as they adjusted to the darkness, but before he could jolt up, he noticed the soft green glow on the ceiling. The tears still fell down his cheeks, but his breaths calmed, a slight moment of confusion, and then he gave a laugh. Just a little short sniff of a thing, but it was far better than shivering in fear.

If he really needed her, she'd be here in an instant, Nebraska knew. Kaedin always cared for him so much. He shouldn't've left. But it was okay. They'd made it through today, and that was a victory in and of itself when faced with so many dangers.

The soft green glow entranced him for a few moments as he was lost in his thoughts, but Nebraska quickly drifted off again.

So I’m writing a short story in my Changelings ‘verse for a galaxy brain commission that was simply “Boyd gets a boyfriend.” Nothing wrong there. But it does mean I feel like I finally gotta nail down the full intricacies of Boyd’s magic, which is unnecessarily....extra, due to the existence of the Curse of the Specialist Snowflake that afflicts me.

Like, I couldn’t just give him one physical change and one magic like most other Changelings, nooooooo, he’s gotta be the Zodiac Kid and have twelve completely different changes and magics, one for each sign and he changes throughout the year in accordance to the changing of the signs. Why’d I do it that way? Cuz I gotta, obviously. Hahahaha, shut up, me.

I mean, there was a point to it originally, like, his sister Alicia’s Change and magic is that she’s surrounded by ghostly versions of a bunch of her alternate universe selves at any given moment, and she can communicate with them and call upon their skills and is sometimes called Sibyl around town, so like, the common thread/theme of her and Boyd’s magic is like, an infinity of self, but also, by “there was a point to it originally” I also just mean I couldn’t settle on and pick what I wanted Boyd’s magic to be so I was like here’s a fun thing I could do, make up a reason for him to have even MORE options.

.....I feel like, potentially, this self-created problem I’m having could have been avoided somehow, but gosh, fuck if I can see how.

So most of Boyd’s magic is hammered down....

In his Sagittarius phase, he’s physically a centaur whose lower half looks like a night sky studded through with starfields and moving constellations, and his magic from November 23rd to December 21st is uncanny intuition, a kind of off-the-top-of-his-head divination. He just instinctively knows the answers to questions when he’s in his Sagittarius phase, the more specific the question the more accurate his answer. He doesn’t have context, he doesn’t KNOW how he knows the things that he knows, he just knows them.

You ask him if you’ll meet someone who could very plausibly be the love of your life within the next week, and if he says yes, its absolutely, one hundred percent true and accurate.....but if you ask him then how can I find them, he might say well first thing you gotta do is get out of my face and stop bugging me, and then walk down the street and turn left.....and that too, would be absolutely true and accurately point you in the direction that answers your question but like, that’s all he’s got and you’re missing a few steps at that point. So. Its not an exact science or anything.

There’s definitely tricks to maximizing the intel you get out of him when he feels like being hit up for intel and doesn’t just string you along to be a total troll. Which he is. Hence why he also spends most of December filling in all of Alicia’s large stockpile of crosswords and sudokus, as he just instinctively and whimsically knows what to fill in even if he doesn’t actually have a clue WHY the Mesozoic Era is the answer to 49 Down. Alicia maintains this is cheating. He maintains he doesn’t care, and answers 64 across with “Johannesburg.” Fuck if he knows why.

In his Capricorn phase, he sublets his apartment in Bordertown and takes a month lease on a place underwater in Sub Francisco.....as for this period he’s more of a classical merman, but also if a classical merman has goat horns. But like, whose to say they don’t? Have you ever met one? Thought so. His magic during this period is horns of plenty.....he touches something to one of his horns, and comes away holding two of that item. So it basically only works on things that can be hand-held, but other than that it could be food, physical items, medicine, etc.

In his Aquarius phase, he’s physically the same as he was when a normal mainstream human....except that his skin has a faintly translucent quality as if that of water, with faint stars spiraling in distant patterns in the depths of his slightly watery form. He’s not invisible or actually translucent, like you can’t see through him or even see his organs or anything....rather, its more like most of the time he just looks like normal, human Boyd, albeit wearing a lot of glitter for some reason....but then he turns and catches the light just so, and for a moment you can see how the light is shining THROUGH him similar to the way it shines through the surface of a body of water. His magic in this phase is based on Ganymede, the cup-bearer of the gods.....water he touches becomes imbued with healing properties.

Like, he unscrews an ordinary bottle of Evian and reaches in with the tip of his finger, and whammo, you’ve got a healing potion whose magic will last until the last of the water is gone, even if its not used until after his Aquarius phase. Once he’s imbued a source of water with his magic, its a healing potion from then on out, which makes his shop a useful place to find healing magic year-round.....or at least until he runs out. You come into his shop even in late July, if he’s still got some healing potions lying around they’re as good as ever....but if he’s already out of stock, you’re out of luck until next year’s Aquarius phase rolls around, and you gotta go look elsewhere on Mercy Row for a healer in the meanwhile.

In his Pisces phase, he goes back to his Sub Francisco apartment as his physical Change here is that of a centaur-triton....kinda the classic ithyocentaur, but also he’s got kinda webbed-like wings spanning from his back.....its a whole thing. But a good look. His magic in this phase is ‘the perfect pair’....he cups his hands and forms a magical, elemental construct in the shape of a koi fish that’ll swim off in the direction of the perfect complement to something or someone. Like a personal, magical compass guiding him or whomever he makes one for to like, the magnetic north that exists somewhere as the perfect counterpart to an already present south pole. Whatever, this makes no sense and is super confusing, I get that. But it makes perfect sense and is not confusing in my head. Still just working on translating from point Head to point Paper without the concept getting lost in the translation.

In his Aries phase, he’s his ‘normal’ mainstream-appearing base form....but also he’s got golden wings and ram horns. And his magic is that he breathes fire. But its magic fire, and it doesn’t burn things it touches, it turns them to gold. Its a whole Golden Fleece thing mixed with a King Midas thing.

In his Taurus phase.....idk yet. I mean, bull horns seems a pretty obvious go-to motif, but haven’t decided for his magic yet. Mostly because @sunwukxng is a Taurus and he takes things like this juuuuuuuust personal enough that I know if I don’t come up with something good here he’ll decide its a mortal insult towards all Tauri and thus him as well, and he’ll declare a blood feud against me that shall last five hundred years. And he’s already got like, six of those in progress, so....trying to avoid racking up anymore.

In his Gemini phase, he splits into two selves, his physical self and astral self, so he’s basically followed everywhere by both his shadow and a spirit version of himself he can astral project elsewhere. And when his astral self goes through something, kinda like how there’s that idea that when a ghost passes through someone they feel a chill or as if they almost left their body for a second.....his astral self can kinda like....yoink other peoples’ astral selves out of their physical forms temporarily. Yoink is of course the highly technical, scientific term for the phenomenon. Obviously.

In his Cancer phase.....idk yet. Look, its hard to be classy and deep concept-y about crabs, okay? I’m sorry Cancers, but even in the original myths about the constellation the gods were like yeah, this crab constellation was a mistake, we just felt bad about Artemis kicking that one all the way up into the heavens after it pinched Orion, the only himbo she ever almost made a boytoy out of. A lot of other Zodiacs featured animals that had the common perception of being viewed as pushing the sun across the sky, so there’s maybe something there in that direction....idk yet.

In his Leo phase, Boyd mostly appears as his ‘normal’ base mainstream-human looking self....except he’s big in a way that is not exactly Giant Big (and there are a good couple dozen giant-sized Changelings living in Bordertown, so like, he isn’t officially anywhere near that) but he is possessed of a height and size that are nevertheless best described as Ridiculous. Like he’s bigger than the Strange Angel, but not as big as Teddy the Sun-snake. That means nothing to anyone but me. Whatever. Moving on. Anyway, in his Leo phase he also has a fiery red mane kinda....that’s threaded through with silver stars in the Leo constellation shape. His magic in this phase is his ‘roar of command’....basically, he can imbue anything he says with the force of his will, and thus like.....make inanimate objects do what he tells them. He’s like “Open sesame” and a locked door is like you got it, boss.

In his Virgo phase.....I am not entirely sure what he looks like yet. I’m pretty sure its mostly his mainstream-looking ‘base self’ but like.....with an unnatural charisma, but also something a little less generic than that. Needs a specific hook still, beyond just “I’m ridick pretty.” Like, he’s Sinqua Walls. He’s always ridick pretty. Its a thing. But his magic in this phase is like.....an aura of inspiration. He just sorta puts out a vibe that inspires people around him in various ways that are unique to the individual.

He’s also way shorter than he used to be even before his Change hit, or like, shorter than he is in any of his other phases. Like, we’re talking five and a half feet max. Is there any reason for this whatsoever beyond me being amused at the juxtaposition of him going from his Biggest and Most Ridiculous Phase immediately to his Smallest and Most Ridiculous Phase? No. No there is not. Fear the deep profundity of my creative process, for it is deep and it tis profound.

In his Libra phase....I’m not sure yet what his physical change is, but I do know his skin has a scaled texture, and I know those aren’t the scales normally associated with Libra but there’s a point to it, its just......missing some ingredients still to totally make sense. But he also tends to wear a blindfold a lot of the time during his Libra phase because I know his magic here has to do with viewing things in terms of overlapping possibilities and potentialities, like, he looks at things and sees not just the way they ARE but also a whole bunch of different ways they COULD be, and his magic enables him to kinda tweak things from the way they are more towards one of those other possibilities, in a sense that’s all about ‘balancing’ things.

However, the sensory stimuli of all those potentialities 24/7 is honestly overwhelming and gives him serious migraines, so he mostly tries to rest his eyes behind some kind of blindfold most of the time and just take it off to focus on specific things in order to utilize his magic, and only a little at a time. This is probably the most technically ‘powerful’ of his magics in terms of both versatility and scope, but it takes a toll and he really tries to pace himself during his Libra phase or it just gets to be too much, really fast.

And then lastly, in his Scorpio phase, he’s got a whole scorpion tail and barbed stingers along the outsides of his arms.....but rather than lean into the whole ‘eww Scorpios are duplicitous and manipulative’ and also ‘eww scorpions,’ his magic here calls back to how scorpions are actually protective guardians in a lot of mythologies and folklore, and there’s also plenty of Zodiac lore about the idea of the Scorpio sign being all about uncovering truths at any cost, etc. So his magic here is another ‘liquid/mutable’ type and takes the form of venom from his stingers that’s almost like drops of amber.....and that have various properties aimed at uncovering truths and exposing lies and falsehoods. Like, elixirs made during his Scorpio phase are another highly sought ware at his shop, because depending on the venom concentration he places in each, they have different properties. Like, he’s got vials where just a drop placed in your drink or on your food will reveal if its been drugged or poisoned, or vials of elixirs that basically act as magical truth serum.....and then other vials where like, you splash a little of it on something you suspect to be an illusion or a magical disguise of some kind, and it’ll dispel the false magic and reveal what’s truly there.

“What happens if like, I splash it in the face of someone I think is wearing an illusion disguise and it turns out they’re not and that’s really just what they look like?” A customer asks.

Boyd shrugs. “Then they’ll just be wet. And probably a little pissed, I imagine. That’ll be $49.95 please.”

“I thought you said it was $29.95!”

“That was before the Asked Stupid Questions tax was applied,” Boyd smiles placidly. “Will that be cash or credit?”

Okay. So. Typing that all out cleared up some of that for me but not quite as much as I was hoping as Cancer and Taurus apparently still persist in Vexing me.

OH OH OH RACHEL

Rachel Yoko is the leader of the Western Zodiac squad from my story Constellations! She’s the Aries one.

She’s Japanese-American (either Nisei or Sansei), and Rachel and Yoko are both her first names. Most of the time she just goes by Rachel, but Japanese-speaking family members will refer to her primarily with her Japanese name.

I knew her personality for a while, but something felt *off* until I realized that she was a trans girl. Her parents and brother are all kind of assholes, so she lives with her aunt and is finally expressing herself the way she wants to. (also, yes, Rachel and Yoko are both chosen names, and I know both deadnames. Is it rude to share your OC’s deadname? I dunno. Y’all can ask if you’re curious.)

Rachel is simultaneously more confident in herself than she’s ever been and more insecure than she’s ever been, and I just love her to bits. See, before she didn’t have to worry about if people liked her or not, because she was masking and depressed and nobody knew the real her. Now she doubts that the real her is enough, and worries if it’s worth it to be the real her if all it does is distance her from her family. She also has to lead a motley crew of peers that she APPARENTLY knew in a past life but doesn’t REMEMBER, and she doesn’t know if she’s the best one for the job. She covers up all this insecurity by being aggressive and bossy. (So basically she’s a token Knight of Blood.)

Anyway, I think one of my favorite character-explorative scenes for her is when she’s recruiting Sagittarius.

See, the structure of the early story is that each of the Zodiac reincarnations are waking up month by month, and being added to the group one by one. Sagittarius turns out to be Rachel’s brother’s girlfriend, and the nearest opportunity she has to meet her is Thanksgiving dinner with her family. It’s the first time we see her with her not-aunt family members, and a really interesting look at her character. By this point it’s pretty clear that she’s trans, but the boy she used to be or her relationship with her family aren’t things that have been explained or discussed.

It’s ugly.

But Sagittarius ends up being really nice, and Rachel comes out of it a little more sure in herself.

Mercury: What’s your full name? Veronica

Venus: What’s your first language? Italian too!!!

Earth: Where’s your home? A flat in a little village.

Mars: What’s your sexuality? I swing every way.

Jupiter: Do you have any siblings? Little brother. His name is Giacomo.

Saturn: Any pets? None. I would love to have one.

Uranus: What’s your hobby? Well, for the most part is listen to music, drawing and writing.

Sun: Have you ever had alcohol? Obviously.

Sirius: Have you ever failed a class? Totally. I don’t remember how many I have failed.

Rigel: Have you ever gone on a rollercoaster? Of course. I love it. Wait, are you taking about EMOTIONAL rollercoaster? Because-

Deneb: Have you ever been out of your home country? Yes. Almost every month. I live near San Marino.

Arcturus: Have you cried out of something other than sadness? Stress. Strong emotions. Arguing.

Betelgeuse: What’s something you can never forget about? You think I cannot forget something. cute.

Aldebaran: What’s something you care desperately about? To be a good person and to do good things. And the thing I obsess for.

Canopus: Have you ever broken a bone? No.

Bellatrix: Have you ever been forced to lie/keep a secret? Yes.

Alphard: Have you ever lost a friend? Yes. I don’t know how to be friend with people. I try my best to listen and be supportive, but sometimes my best isn’t enough. I feel mostly disconnetted by them, even if I care deeply, and this torture me. I don’t know if this makes some sense.

Vega: What’s something you’ve done that you wish you hadn’t? I think everything I’ve done made me who I am now. Desire something didn’t happen would mean desire being another person, in the bad or the good. I really can’t say. There are things I wish I have done differently. Things I said carelessly. Things I had forgotten. Things I want to make up for. I’m not going to write them here.

Pegasus: Favourite place to be? Everywhere it’s fine, if there are not many people and I have a pen, a pencil and a noitebook. If I have my pc too is wonderful. If there are my friends it’s ok. Maybe a place without loud noises either way

Phoenix: Favourite thing to wear? Comfortable things.

Aries: Favourite movie? I don’t have one.

Cygnus: Favourite weather? I really don’t know.

Milky Way: Who’s your oldest friend? Cristina. She’s strong and cool and funny. we know each others till the beginnings of my memories

Andromeda: Do you consider yourself social? No.

Black Eye Galaxy: Do you believe in love at first sight? No. I believe some people are so awesome you crush on them, but I wouldn’t call it love. Love is dedition and cure and knowledge and so many things that can’t be present when you first “bump” into a person you like.

Cartwheel Galaxy: When was your first kiss?The first with a game. I think I was 14-ish?

Cigar Galaxy: How’s your flirting skills? I don’t have a flirt mode.

Comet Galaxy: Have you ever had to leave a relationship because someone changed too much? Yes. It scares the hell out of me.

Pinwheel Galaxy: Would you date the last person you talked to? No, I wouldn’t date my brother, Bleah.

Sombrero Galaxy: Do you have a crush right now? I LOVE someone right now.

Bode’s Galaxy: Have you ever had a secret admirer? Yes, it was a little embarassing.

Sunflower Galaxy: Would you date/make friends with someone out of pity? Date? No. Make friends? Sometimes happened I have tried to reach someone out of pity. Sometimes we become friends. Sometimes we take other ways.

Tadpole Galaxy: Would you deny a relationship/friendship? Only in serious case.

Whirlpool Galaxy: Have you ever cried over a breakup? Yes. I cried a lot. whole lakes went salad for my crying (JK the last one)

Other stuff: Wishes

Comet: What’s your big dream? Being indipendent from my family.

Asteroid: What does your dream life look like? The one of everybody. A home to return to. Travels and stories. Meeting people, listen and watching things I love. Writing. Be better at my job, at my friends, at my partner and family. I would love to be at ease with myself and others.

Meteor: What’s something you wish you could tell, but can’t? If I can’t tell I can’t write.

Nebula: If you could undo one thing in your life, what would it be? Isn’t the same question of before? Ok, if you desire my anser so much, I wish I didn’t lie about grades. No, wait. I wish I didn’t trust everybody so easily. No... yes. I think is more about the things I would have done better than the ones I did. a thing I would do: go to my Great grandmother for the last time. I wish to being able to fulfill the promise I did to her.

Shooting Star: If you could bring back one thing, what would it be? My grandmother’s ring. I lost it when I was little.

Pulsar: What do you hope to do in the next 10 years? Travel. Learn new things.

Supernova: What’s one thing you want to do before you die? Write my testament.

Quasar: If you could spend the rest of your life with only one person, who would it be? I’M NOT GOING TO ANSWER THIS.

Wormhole: What’s something you wish would happen, but know won’t? My family to actually deal with their problems in a way that benefit them.
