I was listening to this and it was just genuinely sweet to hear about Anne Boleyn having you know, people who loved her all her life and beyond. That there were a lot of women who loved her. And it was explained so beautifully (in the final segment with Kate McCaffrey) and just like, I’m emotional actually.

Coneyislanddesigns
Part one
Part two
We need to talk more about ConeyIslandDesigns (Rory)
If you don’t know who she is, Rory is a cosplayer and former dresser for Phantom on Broadway, she is known for her job as a dresser and for her very stage accurate and detailed cosplays, she mainly cosplays Christine Daae but also has other costumes from phantom and from other movies and musicals. I used to follow her for a long time and really looked up to her, her cosplays were stunning and looked absolutely perfect, I even once did a live stream with her back in 2021, she was very sweet and after that I’d also asked her some questions and she was nice in answering them. This was two years ago.
She then got her job on Phantom Bway, I thought that was absolutely amazing but I had no idea what was going on behind the scenes.
Rory became rather stuck up with responses, I didn’t try messaging her again but it was mainly because she started to intimate me. I stopped following her when she made this comment
Tumblr media
No, she does not owe someone explanations about how she makes her cosplays, they seem complicated and she was also probably very busy at the time, understandable. But she worded this so poorly and it came off so rude, with the cosplays she makes then she should expect that people might ask questions, I would assume she would at least be nice if someone asked but now I’m worried about if anyone did try that she’d turned them down in a really rude or snarky way. Also, not everyone can make cosplays like that, if you’ve been a cosplayer for a long time then maybe you can look at a garment and know generally how it’s made, but with an amateur like me even with detailed patterns I still don’t understand at all how something is made 😭 basically, this was just a really bad response and it put me off her. I didn’t know that she was even more worse than that.
I remember some time last year she took a commission for a SIX Anne Boleyn cosplay, I don’t remember a ton from this since I didn’t really pay attention but now I know the story behind it. @saltiestsoprano commissioned it, and they posted the story of what happened on their account.
What I do remember was Rory posting about when she made the cosplay then ‘discovered’ that the customer didn’t want it that way and had to re make it, I think I remember her even posting herself crying but I could be mistaken. Turns out, Rory had made it wrong and not the way that the person who commissioned her wanted, the pattern she used was wrong, she made the skirt wayyyy to short and the top wayyy to big despite having the measurements and tons of references of what was needed. There is more details in this post, along with receipts, messages and even the contract that was made between them. Long story short, Rory is now being sued because of her actions and how terrible she made the cosplay when it costed close to $3000.
Now that Phantom Broadway is closed, she is capitalizing off of it and scamming phans. She knows that people will trust her because she worked on the show, and she knows exactly how to use it in her favor. Not to even mention her phantom con thing, there’s this on her Etsy and EBay for scraps of fabric from the show and Christine’s shoe bows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She posted “proof” on her story saying that they were allowed to take scraps and stuff that were unusable.
“But she worked on the show! They could be real! She even explained on her story!” Yeah well these reviews from her eBay and old Etsy, along with the commission she made for @saltiestsoprano say that she isn’t exactly the most trust worthy, so even if they are real, I’d still have a pretty hard time believing anything she says.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basically, she’s a huge scammer and it’s absolutely nothing new. Don’t give her your money because it will not be worth it, with her track record and how she acts I sincerely doubt anything she is selling is real.
Even if that stuff is real, she is still extremely disrespectful and doesn’t deserve support after what she’s done.
I’ll have to make a second part with more details and something else she just did recently, but if anyone has anything to add then you are more than welcome to reblog this with your opinion or your experience with her.

So like not really a "worst history" post, but rather an examination of one of the most bizarre history blogs I've encountered and which I felt like I had to share. I want to study this blog like a bug
So they're basically a fan blog for historical/fantasy shows that have a major female rivalry (Magnificent Century/The Tudors). All their interests seem to be rooted in madonna vs. whore-ing female characters. But beyond all that they're a Anne Boleyn anti.
I'm not making this up. Whoever runs it is just, up their own ass about Anne. This is literally their blog description
Tumblr media
They seem to just watch tv so they can pit female characters against each other, and to rate their morals (not even kidding, they have lists of characters ranking them by goodness and badness, which is... interesting) They apparently watch HOTD for just this reason
Tumblr media
But most of their content is about historical figures, and the vast majority of that is anti-Anne Boleyn, Anti-Elizabeth I, or both. And, as in their blog profile, these are all either a. interpreting the motivations behind factual events in the worst possible way b. referencing Spanish/Catholic propoganda or just blaming Anne for shit Henry did c. just not true
Like the aforementioned "seducing Henry VIII with witchcraft"
(Like, dear blog-owner. It is 2021. Are you blogging from the Renaissance somehow?)
Here are some examples
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First off I love the idea that Elizabeth had Essex killed because he saw her without makeup. Like, the man was so closely tied to his rebellion against Elizabeth that it's fucking named for him. Clearly that had nothing to do with his execution. It was because Elizabeth was Big Mad about her looks.
(Also the idea of Anne-- who had to work hard to appear legitimate both personally and as a supporter of Protestantism-- calling herself "harlot", "whore", etc. is always so comic, like that Definitely happened)
But secondly
Tumblr media
like. You passed over serial killers. Nazis. child-murderers.
Tumblr media
Ok.
(Like I'm legitimately wondering if OP is Catholic. The obsession with these 2 in particular just seems so perplexing, I'm like... are you butthurt about Anglicanism??)
But maybe my favorite part of this is the multiple posts they reblogged from Tudors/History confessions that are anti-Anne Boleyn, and all marked by the same, let's say... awkward English? as op's own. So they're very clearly submitting stuff to these blogs and then reblogging it to make it look like someone else agrees with them. (And being hella obvious about it). And none of their own posts has more than like 5 notes-- desperate behavior.
This whole blog is so fascinating, like who is out there so annoyed by a historical figure to do the whole fandom-anti-hysterics angle over them? (And if you really were so bothered by Anne, wouldn't you be more concerned with Henry-- give us a Henry VIII hate blog, that would be much more fun). I'm convinced op is actually Ambassador Chapuys, reincarnated in the 21st century as a tumblrina...

Lowkey hate race swapping sometimes. Now hear me out!
I don't mind when people race swap chatacters I just hate it when changing their race would totally change the entire story or have a lot of implications to the story.
I don't mind when fictional charcater race are changed but I hate it when they change a characters race who are suppose to be a certain race for a reason. When they chnage those types of characters a lot of time it changes the narrative of the story and their actions.
Same with historical show or documentaries. If this real life figure was another than they were we would have completely different story on our hands. Like please open a history book.
Listen, when it comes to fictional characters "racebending" means nothing to me unless it's whitewashing (Titans casting a white actor to play Dick Grayson and the MCU casting a white actress to play Wanda Maximoff when they are both literally canonically Romani both ethnically and culturally is my villain origin story) because fiction is fiction, and honestly you can tweak a story to make a character's journey adapt to the new inclusion of them being a member of a minority class so long as you're talented enough. Most writers aren't, and that's why a lot of "oh we made X character a POC in this adaptation" moves tend to ring hollow, but it is possible.
But I have a genuine bone to pick when it's about history.
For one, it's just such a lazy move. "Oh we made Bess of Hardwick Chinese!" fantastic but you do know that Chinese people existed in the late 16th century right? Like, China was a country with a lot of people in it and a thriving culture and way of life and plenty of influential people living there. Why aren't we telling stories about a Chinese woman living in that time period, it's not like that period of Chinese history was dull or as if no one ever mattered or nothing ever happened there. Like, for God's sake, it's just a way of showing that you aren't actually interested in learning about other parts of the world, or decentering Western history, specifically European history, as the only history worth learning about, you just want brownie points for being diverse without actually putting in the work to learn about the vibrant world that existed outside of Europe for the vast majority of human history, aka doing anything to actually explore different non-Western narratives and how the world moved outside of the European bubble.
For two, like you said, a lot of the time "racebending" doesn't really include attempts to accommodate how the history would change. Bridgerton is a wish fulfillment fantasy show so I don't often care about how it deals with history (even tho I do think the Charlotte was black theory is complete bunk and I refuse to engage with people who think it's real) but its whole "and now England is desegregated" thing falls very flat when you remember how involved England was in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, how reliant it was on slave labor, how invested it was in capturing and buying and selling slaves, including the royals. It puts a lot of onus on characters that they've made POC without doing any of the work, and oftentimes deals in a lot of harmful stereotypes. This was seen most egregiously in the 2021 Anne Boleyn show that cast Jodie Turner-Smith as Anne. @duchessofferia discussed this much better than I will, but relying on the same old lazy tropes that have defined Anne Boleyn with a black woman playing her turned into genuinely harmful racial representation. Having Anne be sexually aggressive and domineering and harsh in her mannerisms, especially when compared to Jane Seymour, isn't new, but having a black woman be looming over a small white woman and being sexually aggressive with her feeds into harmful stereotypes about black women and their femininity, and by having George Boleyn also be black, painting him as a sexual deviant and adding a plot where he abandons his responsibilities as a father turns him into the "absent black baby daddy" trope that still does a lot of harm to black men today. Not to mention, changing George Boleyn's race but keeping the rumor about Jane Boleyn lying on the stand to incriminate him turns a "wife turns against her husband for unknown reasons" story into a "white woman accuses a black man of sexual inpropriety that his society would frown on for the purpose of getting him executed by the state" story, which has a long and incredibly dark history in the United States (it's basically the Scottsboro Boys but Renaissance now). I mean, it's basically my primary issue with Hamilton, that the show really wants to capitalize on the whole "America then as told by America now" thing without delving into what it means to have literal slaveowners portrayed by black men and to have the character of Thomas fucking Jefferson call Sally Hemmings by a pet name in that show without any introspection into the fact that she wasn't his girlfriend but, you know, a woman he full on owned and repeatedly raped. It's all surface level and generally causes a lot more problems by refusing to alter the history to deal with these new changes, because it's history and you can't really alter it without creating a host of problems.
With Cleopatra specifically, I mentioned it before but the Ptolemies were total fuckups and literal colonizers in and of themselves, and turning them from a Macedonian dynasty into actual people of color for some kind of narrative (like there aren't any other important women of color in history, or even that time period) while not attempting to even examine the history of that dynasty and that queen in particular doesn't sit right. Like, congratulations, you've now created a story where a woman of color's most important contributions in life were her relationships with white men who held significantly more power than her and over her country, and fucked up to such a degree that her country wouldn't even be considered its own country until the 1950s. How absolutely groundbreaking. Next you're gonna tell me it's subversive to paint Livia Drusilla as a scheming, conniving bitch who manipulated everyone around her, instead of a sexist and tired trope that exists only to demonize one of the few women of actual importance in Augustan Rome because she was half a decade older than her husband and was able to keep her own power after he died. It's not just a lack of intellectual curiosity or good storytelling, but a fundamental misunderstanding of why people want to see stories about people of color, and how Hollywood itself thinks so little of their audience that they think we'll be content with a simple coat of "hey this person's a minority now!" paint over a subject without any attempt to really look into things or understand why the world works the way it does or how these people shaped their lives or the lives of those around them, never mind the new messages you're sending now with these changes.
Ultimately, it doesn't really matter. There's a lot that can fuck up with historical representation in media, and representation of people of color in media in general can always be so incredibly fucked that giving people anything is oftentimes a win in and of itself. But I honestly think that focusing on the same Euro-centric stories and just switching around Pantone skin swatches to do the bare minimum is lazy and insulting. You want me to care about historical stories about people of color? Great, give me historical stories about actual people of color. Let me hear more about ethnic Egyptians, about their lives and their culture and how they influenced history, not ahistorical trash that causes more trouble than its worth and certainly isn't doing anything new or interesting with the subject.

The anti fans tried to spin BE's cancellation as proof "no one" wanted shows about Elizabeth (and by extension Anne) anymore. Like antis are the voice of the people guys! The cry of the oppressed! Speaking truth to power! But BSR did ok afaik and so now it's "proof" that Anne's story is so tired they have to make it "trash" to sell it. So antis are claiming the "moral victory" on this one. Now they're a select few looking down on us. It's funny bc when The Tudors came out in 2007 it was also considered trash yet now is practically beloved and respected. And that was everyone's story sold as "trash".
Tudors was very trashy in some ways, yet I don't really like the way this one looks down on women that weren't 'intellectual' (arguably, do we even 'know' that, anyways?)...in a way it feels like three steps forward, one step back. We've charted a trajectory of Marguerite voiceless and objectified, Henry fucking her to 'get back' at François (Tudors S1) to Marguerite given a voice and lauded, but then...inexplicably, given a voyeuristic view into an orgy, several beats before that scene. Seemingly just because we can.
BSR has actually done pretty well, as far as I can tell? It was trending on UK Netflix a while ago (so much for this being done 'because of Americans', lol) The Spectator seems like it was a nose-holding Alison Weir, please tell us why Anne was cunty and not worth admiration puff piece, I don't even remember a rating, the Guardian gave it four stars, I believe on some other entertainment review websites it's been given a pretty consistent 4 star rating...at this point it has about the same rating on IMDb as Anne Boleyn (2021), but again, to assume social media reviews have anything to do with what is produced/picked up is ludicrous...AMC bought the rights to that show because enough people watched it to justify doing that. Numbers don't lie, but people do.
For this one, the thing is, they're still watching? Some COA stan on Insta that posted like a million stories about how the casting of a lovely, 42-year-old brunette woman as Catherine is the equivalent of spitting on her grave, watched it on Netflix. Most who have said they would not watch it, did. They hate Henry/Anne (and I don't believe they didn't know that was entirely what this show WAS...the marketing was not subtle) and/or Anne Boleyn as a genre, and now in part because of them, more content of that genre will be made. You gotta love the irony.

I honestly can't see the hype and interest in Diana Spencer either, but perhaps Anne Boleyn could go to the top of that pile? There is practically a new portrayal of AB every year, and none of the recent ones are even good. Elizabeth Tudor can possibly fit somewhere in there too, considering her amount of portrayals in comparison to Mary Tudor's.
Good point. I think I've just actively blocked out a lot of the new portrayals of Anne Boleyn recently (especially that 2021 series; I'm happier forgetting that exists), and my dash is never as flooded with her. @en-theos has warned me of another recent miniseries too. Somehow amidst all this 'The Tudors' remains one of the better, more nuanced portrayals of Anne, but then again I think 'The Tudors' was unique amongst all Tudor/Henry VIII-related media for the deliberate care it took to portray the religious and political aspects of Henry's reign beyond just "hurr durr six waifus", with a lot of focus on the supporting characters of his reign (even if it's not always accurate and sometimes important figures like Cranmer and Norfolk just go missing--but I loved everything we got with the Pilgrimage of Grace and Henry's religious conflicts since most people don't realise Henry was a doctrinal Catholic all his life and the show did show that; furthermore, this is still the best portrayal of Cromwell and I loved the attention given to Edward Seymour, Bishop Fisher, all the politics surrounding Henry, Colm Wilkinson was there for some reason, etc).
... This is in danger of turning into another "why I still think The Tudors is one of the best piece of Tudor media despite its flaws" reply, so I will stop there (my dissertation was on Tudor monarchs so I know far more than I should), but.
Honestly I'll fully admit I'm biased and just find Anne Boleyn more interesting than Diana Spencer (it's just too modern for me--as callous as it sounds Diana Spencer hasn't been dead long enough for me to be invested in her or interested), but I've been avoiding the recent Anne-centred shows so it just slipped my mind. (Also, Wolf Hall was bad too, sorry, I stand by it--it was the same stereotypical portrayals of everyone claiming to be 'unique' because it was from Cromwell's POV, but The Tudors still managed to have a better Cromwell and Anne at the end of the day. Vaguely hilarious.)

Patreon Post Unlocked: Anne Boleyn (2021)
Everyone has fixated on one thing about this three-part miniseries Anne Boleyn (2021) — that Jodie Turner-Smith in the title role is Black and the historical figure she portrays is not. But I’m pretty sure that folks complaining about that haven’t watched the show because there’s plenty to discuss, pro and con, about it without even noting...
