list of dreamling headcannons i have, some may or may not be me projecting:
Dream likes food that are sweet, soft and small enough that he can hold and nibble on, like fruit pieces, brownie squares, soft cookies, small cakes and pastries
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hob is not myopic but slightly hyperopic and would need reading glasses to grade and do paperwork
Tumblr media
Dream dissociates, like a LOT, and it get worse after his imprisonment, most of the time he (and other ppl) doesn’t even realize it but he would space out, go on autopilot and become less responsive until someone (hob) pulls him out of it
Hob would collect random trinkets and then forgets about them, ranges from small jewelry pieces (some really old at this point), toy figurines, smoothed out porcelain shards, corks, or cool rocks, and those would piles up in his flat until Matthew steals them again for his own collection, Hob rarely notices, and when he do he doesn’t mind
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hob keeps up with his memes and slangs but would mix them up bc he literally cannot keep track of their timeline, like these tumblr posts? these are Hob
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hob doesn’t know this but he’s tiktok famous bc of videos of him ranting about Shakespeare or mixing up his slangs or just reveals the craziest of life stories, ppl in the comments like “👀 is he single” and his student reply “no he’s married to a hot goth who visits sometimes”
Hob doesn’t teach history bc they get soo many things wrong and he can’t stand it, he teaches classic literature analysis instead and shares random history or other random facts he learned over the years in class.
Hob has a hard time falling asleep without cuddling something in his arms, usually its a pillow but it’s now replaced by Dream. Dream doesn’t sleep but he appreciates the cuddles and it allows him a couple of hours of peace and quiet to blank out when needed.
Matthew was Hob’s best man (he had a tiny collar and bowtie and everything), Lucienne was Dream’s librarian of honor, Fiddler’s Green officiated the wedding and Death walked Dream down the aisle. Time & Night were not invited but Calliope was
They had their wedding in front of the new inn but held a separate celebration in the dreaming so all the lil dreams and nightmares can be a part of it
Tumblr media
They both ADORE Ghibli films, the classic, whimsical fairytale/fantasy is right up Dream’s alley not to mention the artistry and all the dreams they have inspired

Does anyone else get haunted by the knowledge that in a few hundred years from now (yes I'm gonna be an optimist and hope there will be humans in a few hundred years) that people are going to look back at our written words and laugh themselves silly over what they find? Sure if our digital age continues at least that might be slightly less awful to read but you know the amount of errors and misspellings we do because we've been taught 'hooked on phonics' and what have you. Which might be serviceable for learning how to read but is complete and utter shit for teaching people to spell?
And since we've frankly gotten lazy and so used to our little pocket computers auto correcting our spelling that if we have to actually write something out then we're fucked. So we know this NOW but imagine what people 500 or 100 years from now are going to think when they find exant writing and immediately lose their shit like we do over middle english? (much less old english) The general populace is pretty much oh, look at those silly, quaint and uneducated people putting their ye and their olde's into everything, etc. And like….completely ignoring the fact it was literally just a handful of languages thrown into a stew pot and left to melt into a bastardized version of SOMETHING. So we look at it and it just looks like a typo riddled hot mess to our modern eye.
Now imagine someone finding our exant modern writing examples and tell me they wouldn't do the same thing. All those desperate attempts at phonetically trying to spell certain words and our utter and miserable failures. Not to mention our SLANG, often completely centralized in certain areas. Philly's infamous Jawn comes to mind right off the top of my head. Or AAVE. I'm clearly speaking from a English speaking American POV but I know other languages and cultures have the same fun flavors and things that make language so endlessly fascinating.
Also imagine someone finding our tumblr blogs with our widdle meow meow and our blorbos, our baby girls and any of a dozen weird tumblr specific vernacular which is kinda it's own weird tumblr ecosystem dialect.
These poor bastards in the future are going to be SO CONFUSED. And at LEAST we have a centuries long record of how the English language has evolved and changed over the years to help guide us. But for dead languages or ones that don't have that rich history of documentation? Lets say some awful global event happens and we lose their history, they're going to be even more confused by our little meow meows because maybe something like the knowledge cats = meow survives because it's so prevelant. But why the fuck are we calling these random characters who have no feline features our little meow meows?
So yeah, that's the shit I think about sometimes. And it haunts me.
Also this entire post was brought to you by my struggling for a good four minutes to try and figure out how to spell buoyancy and the many fucked up and terrible attempts I made desperately trying to get close enough my spellchecker would understand wtf I was trying to type only for it to keep suggesting bouncy?

Headcanons about hob gadling because this man has me in a vice grip - part I because this got out of hand
Hob tries his damn best to keep up to date with all the latest trends, especially technology, he always has the latest cell phone model
Unfortunately this does mean hob got into crypto the moment he heard about it
On the bright side he got in on the ground floor and got out with a good chunk of change
I think hob has a knack for stumbling onto these things and making money by accident (see: printing press) he kind of just invests in stuff for fun and is always surprised when it pans out. He usually pulls out once it’s starts making real money tho
Hob has wisened up just a bit and keeps his money more spread out. He has a bunch of very valuable trinkets and books in his apartment that he can pawn off if he needs to
He also has a cache of like jewelry or gold or some shit hidden in a hole somewhere just in case he’s run out of town again
that one tumblr post of someone’s professor keeping an excel doc of all the new slang he hears from his students - that’s hob
Honestly you can pry professor hob gadling from my cold dead hands
I like English professor hob over history professor hob because teaching history would hurt just a little and he doesn’t want to override his memories with the cold facts of people who didn’t experience that time period (but I still do like history (or any other subject) professor hob)
Not to contradict myself but hob teaches the history of English literature and his students love him cause he always adds fun anecdotes about the day to day of the time period he likes to joke he was actually there haha!
Hob is mad that he does actually like Shakespeares work but he credits that to whatever his stranger did and NOT Shakespeare (he never outright voices his disdain for the man this to his student but they Know)
Hob tries his goddamn best to not get tenured cause he doesn’t want to have to explain quitting a position like that
Honestly I think about professor!hob too much and this post is getting too long already
hob still speaks Middle English fluently (and pulls it out sometimes for his students) and he has Opinions about the great vowel shift
He may or may not have published a few translations of books in Middle English to modern English under a pseudonym (look other translators just didn’t get it they didn’t understand the Vibe)
and lastly I would just like to say: hob with his hair up in messy bun
Posting the rest in part II cause this is already too long and I honestly don’t understand tumblrs text formatting

Author Ask Tag Game
Thank you @doublegoblin for the tag here! And also @gummybugg for tagging me here!
(1) What is the main lesson of your story (e.g. kindness, diversity, anti-war), and why did you choose it?
That we are what we make of ourselves, despite our traumas, despite our gifts, and despite our faults. That there are things that people do that are unforgivable, even if they are forced. Also, that true love is patient, kind, and understanding despite its awesome fragility.
I chose these themes because I think they're realistic, they're lessons that are easy to swallow, and that don't need to be pushed in people's faces to be understood. I don't want to spell things out but I also just want to tell a story, so if this ends up not being the real main lesson then I hope you all still like it.
(2) What did you use as inspiration for your worldbuilding (like real-life cultures, animals, famous media, websites, etc.)?
I studied Romanian and European fashion from the 1850's to the 1870's. Then I studied American (United States) fashion from then on until I was familiar. I studied history, slang, folklore, LGBT history, etc. As far as what my world looks like, its a cross between where I grew up in a state somewhere along the Missipiipii-fuck Mississippi river and living in Florida but make it gloomy.
(3) What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? Do you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness, help readers grow as a person?
Glen is trying to become himself again after visiting the horrific and disgusting Tiletsu Clan. There he is confronted with a question that someone asked him long ago: If vampires are just more powerful humans, aren't they more dangerous? And conversely, if humans are just weak vampires, are they worth keeping safe?
As a writer, I want to tell a good story where all of the characters (except the Tiletsu and friends) are morally grey, make bad decisions that they thought were good ones, and have to grow up despite having plenty of time to do so. While trauma causes many reactions, I read a lot where the reaction is to forget everything. My experience is that I can't forget anything at all and I wanted to explore that in my writing.
(4) How many chapters is your story going to have?
About thirty chapters. The outline of Masterpiece is 70 pages long, granted it is an okay-detailed outline, with 33 parts currently. So please expect 33-40 chapters.
(5) Is it fanfiction or original content? Where do you plan to post it?
Original Content 100%. There isn't anything wrong with fanfiction at all, but I love my original characters and the worlds I build, and I'm not a big enough or cool enough fan of anything to write fanfiction.
I plan to post the first 5 chapters of Masterpiece here on Tumblr, over at Wattpad, and Ao3. Smaller novellas and the entire story will be published with a limited print run at first and the eBook somewhere that I haven't decided yet for purchasing. Starry Skies and Like Minds will follow this same process, but Henrietta and Apocalyptic Cat Lady (Working Title) are web series!
You'll be able to find more information after my website is up and running!
(6) When and why did you start writing?
I started writing when I was 11 and did collaborative writing roleplays with other people my age. Eventually, I became a big enough fan of Star Trek (Kelvin Universe) that I did a massive fanfiction with my friend that lasted years. I made many OCs, had whole stories, had lots of adventures, and then when I went to college it died. One of those OCs will be reborn into Starry Skies and Like Minds whenever I decide to write it and share it here!
(7) Do you have any words of engagement for fellow writers of Writeblr? What other writers of Tumblr do you follow?
My blog is under a year old and I have less than 100 followers, it's just the name of the game. When I posted my first piece of writing, absolutely no one found it for a while despite ABCDEFG. What helped me the most when it comes to finding mutuals that actually interact with you is to find "Looking for Writeblr" posts and go through the replies. Check every blog. Start interacting, that's why my intro post has a "Please, I promise I'm just an idiot and really like you blog" disclaimer because I do, genuinely, like a lot of stuff on other people's blogs. That is how I found the great and powerful @doublegoblin @mthollowell-writes @pinkchaosstories and @gummybugg who tag me and make my life great.
Thank you all for tagging me in everything, you make my life a joy.

hi !! i’m kat !
i’m new here (sorta), and i’m looking to make some friends. i took the pipeline from tiktok to twitter to tumblr and ended up here… refurbishing an account i made years ago solely for lurking ✨ most of my basic info is on my profile (prns, age, sexuality). i’m a lottielee first and human second 🫡
unfortunately i don’t bring much to the table, and i don’t really know what i’m doing, so i’m just going to list some of my interests/favs in hopes of finding some people!!
yellowjackets (lottielee)
scream (amber freeman, anika kayoko, tamber)
taylor swift
tvd/legacies (josie saltzman, caroline forbes, most canon josie ships)
courtney eaton
mikey madison
melissa collazo
olivia rodrigo
kaylee bryant
one of us is lying (show only, maeve rojas, janaeve)
i may not post about all of the things i listed, but i’ll most likely be liking/reblogging them! my posts will probably just be me rambling about my interests and saying random shit.
also, apologies in advance if i don’t understand tumblr terms… i have a chronic case of tiktok/twitter slang.
now, can someone teach me how to work this app??

Don't know if this applies but T.M.I . for the Mun- What and who influences Beth as a Muse the most? Or did inspiration come from else where?
TMI Tuesday || Always Accepting
Tumblr media
I am so sorry you asked this, Nonnymouse, but here we go. First, let me tell you, I've been a writer for a very long time. I was a reader by the age of four, and by the age of eight, I was outlining and writing my first novel. When I was 14, my friends at school introduced me to a tabletop rpg {Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd. Edition: Dragonlance}. Role-play and writing have been lifelong past times and I become very involved in character creation. Fast-forward to 2014 when I saw CA: The Winter Soldier. Now of course I knew pertinent parts of the story from having been a comic book collector for some years, but there was something about the movie and the portrayal of SebStan that hurt my heart. I started to think the boy needed, in no particular order, a bath, a hug, a warm blanket, a kiss on the forehead, and a grilled cheese sandwich cut in half, diagonally. Two of my nearest and dearest suggested that maybe I write some fanfic, so I set about thinking about what kind of person would make a very good friend for Bucky Barnes. The first thing I decided was he would need someone who wouldn't be afraid of him, initially, and maybe someone who could patch up the kinds of wounds he might have after you know, someone dropped the Treskelion on him. Then I decided that she would need the kind of flexibility to drop everything for the sake of our tragic hero if need be, or to provide him with resources that he might need.
I wanted her to not fit into the mainstream. I wanted her to have a connection to the world without overshadowing the canons that already existed. I knew she would be Riley's sister. So she had to be part Irish. It was Beth herself who told me she was that, but more importantly, that she was Polynesian. Hawai'ian to be specific. It took me almost a year to learn about Hawai'i, the people and culture, the food and dress, the struggles of the people, and to teach myself how to read and write the language, and the slang {Pidgin}. It took me even longer to find a face claim for her and for Andy both. Eventually, when we were both happy with her bare bones/history, I decided that I wanted to get a sort of "feel" for her, and that's when Stoat {my roomie extraordinaire over at @morgansmornings} told me about Tumblr and told me maybe I could try her out here.
2016, in September, she made her debut. The first three people who ever befriended me were another OC {@multi-mused}, a John Constantine {I miss you, Nick!}, and a Loki { @lokitheliesmith}, the first and latter whom I still play with! And while I did make Beth for Bucky, she grew and changed and became a little breathing being all of her own. Some of her background stems from my own, some of her personality from my nearest and dearest friend, but like a child you have and raise, she had some fundamentals, but ultimately she created herself, evolved and changed based on her experiences and circumstances, and she's her own person now.
some influences include: 1. The lyrics for this song. 2. This tabletop role playing game, arguably my most favourite. 3. Just how cute and tiny is Kristin Kreuk? 4. And honest to goodness, all of you who have interacted with her, leaving your own marks on her, to which I am grateful for. If that isn't the questions you were asking, then please feel free to ask others, dm me, or hit me up on disco. <3

HI ROM SORRY FOR LATE REPLY buttttt omgggg i have read the girl on the train!!!!! it was soo cool i loved the twist in the end!!
ALSO AHAHHAHAHA UR REACTION IS SO SIMILAR TO THE FEMALE MC'S LEMME SHOW YOU
Tumblr media
he's so fucking adorable!!!! i finished the book a few hours ago and i absolutely loved it!!! instant 5 stars from me!! it was a comfort read despite it being a tragic romance??like it was realistic the choices they made and such and i was very satisfied with how things ended up i usually only give books 5 stars when they make me cry throw up and scream but this was bittersweet and it was comfy for my heart like even doe im pmsing it didnt make me cry so yeah it was weird giving it 5 stars but it is worthy!!! deffo read it
and yes i agree he would try so hard to understand ur humor and the slangs and poor baby sometimes gets so frustrated but i can just imagine u mastering the art of explaining it to the point if someone asked u to explain it to a 5 year old u could soo worry not choso!!!
also i feel like omg he'd deffo be the type to like accidentally read ur diary or ur tumblr or ur notes on ur phone bc poor baby has like no boundaries so imagine ur surprise when he mentions something u wrote in ur private diary and you're like "h-how did u know abt that" and he's like "ur diary" and then u have to sit down and drill into his head a lesson abt boundaries and how to respect them not in like scolding way but in a soft way bc u understand he doesnt know these stuff
UGH MY HEART IS SO SOFT FOR CHOSO i love him
I’m just trying to predict the twists rn Lmao but the story has really just begun so yeah- it remind me somewhat of the silent patient tbh, another book I loved
Ps: the thing I wrote- didn’t include Nanami because initially I wanted to write for Megumi but then I just 💀gave up
And ok ok I’m not a romance genre girlie at all but maybe just maybe, once when I’m done with all the books I have to get through? I’ll read this one—and awhhh teaching choso like boundaries and all? I’m so soft for the idea because it’s like—he’s not like those guys whom you have to “take care of” or become a “mom” to but then little things require your help in emotional understanding
Like he’s not “dependent” on you but without you, he’d be miserable. Oml I kiss this man fr

For the meme: I'd ask 19 but you've gotten that heaps of times now, so I'll ask 9 instead
9. what's your writing process like?
okay so this is the part where i'm a Bad Literature Major and i reveal that i don't really have a concrete writing process
i tend to take inspiration from poetry, snippets of conversation, memes, prompts on tumblr, and a thousand and one other things, but what inspires me and when and how is completely unknown to me
generally speaking I am not an endurance writer, though i'm getting better! i tend to write a oneshot out in a single day, whether it's 1k or 10k. if I have a fully-formed picture in my mind, i want to put it down as quickly as possible before a potential OTHER picture comes along and obliterates it
i do my most and best writing while i'm at work, because it makes the ADD go brr. having a time limit between appointments means that i HAMMER words out, and I can read through it later to see if it sounds right or needs rearranging
I don't tend to write outlines, though this is something i am trying to teach myself. previously i have found structuring my writing to be limiting, because i focus more on the structure and not on the enjoyment of the writing, but it's a process!
i write more in the morning than the evening. evening is memes time.
and then when the whole thing is written i will read over it, usually multiple times, for grammar and spelling purposes. i historically haven't used betas because I don't want to bother people, and also copyediting is a thing i really enjoy doing on my own work, but recently i am being talked into sharing my writing early and so far it is working out and enjoyable! it's nice to watch someone react in real time.
OH and also i fuckin love research. i'll research 1800s plumbing for an hour for a single throwaway line. i love knowing things and the more niche the knowing, the more i like it (hence, why I'm into dead languages and new slang, l o l)

Can someone teach me Tumblr slang??

why would you pwn a noob?
ngl, I’m not sure if you’re missing old internet slang or mean to be more accommodating to someone new. But, to help teach them? Learn the ways of the group they’re entering. Like tumblr’s uproar over twitter’s migration here. Other than that, it’s just a fun- to me- use of old, ridiculous now yet nostalgic, internet slang

Golly, That’s a Swell Flashcard, Mr. Sanders!
Virgil takes a closer look at some of Logan's flashcards. [ AO3 ]
Tumblr Analogical Week Day 5 Prompt: Flashcards/Skateboard
"Hang on there, Teach," Virgil was lying across Logan's bed, listening to the logical Side describe a story idea. "Did you just use the word 'fly' unironically?"
Logan furrowed his brow and looked at the flashcard in his hand. "Yes, 'Fly,' exceptionally socially acceptable and desirable, typically but not exclusively used to describe a male subject." He frowned at Virgil. "Did I misuse the vernacular?"
Virgil laughed gently, flipping over to sit up and face him. "No, you've got the right definition and - ," he waved his hand vaguely "contextually you're perfect. It's just ..."
Logan sat up straighter in his chair and peered closely at Virgil. He nodded, encouraging the anxious side to continue. "Just what?"
Virgil winced. "’Fly’ is about thirty years out of date." Virgil looked thoughtful. "You know, it's actually so old that it might come back soon." He looked up at Logan. "Maybe mark it somehow but hold on to it?," he suggested. Logan nodded and made a mark in the upper right-hand corner on both sides.
Logan now frowned at the index cards in his hands. The stack had really grown significantly since he'd started spending more time with Virgil, both because he picked up new words every time they spoke, but also due to the independent studying he would complete when they weren't together. "Perhaps my idioms could use some editing." Logan thumbed through the cards, then adjusted his glasses. "I do not suppose ...," he looked up to see Virgil watching him with a small smile. "Would you, perhaps, be willing to assist me in that endeavor?"
Virgil's smirk turned into a grin. "I'd be happy to, Teach."
Logan nodded. "Very well." He looked down at the thick stack of flashcards and licked his lips. He swallowed hard and presented the stack to Virgil. "We have some time until we are needed to film the next video." He had to forcibly relax his fingers to relinquish the cards. "We could begin now, if that works for you, of course."
"Let's do this!," Virgil started reading the cards. They did not appear to be in any order Virgil could discern, but he had no doubt that Logan had some sort of method to the madness. "Ok, 'kin', 'sus'? Nice," Virgil nodded, " 'And they were roommates'?" He looked up at Logan, shrugging slightly, "Why?"
"I did not immediately get the reference when someone was commenting on my story about students at Starfleet Academy." Logan didn't share that the reader had thought his story was intended to be a meme-based satire and not an actual love story. He had deleted the entire work after that comment.
Virgil rubbed at his chin. "Ok." He flipped through a few more cards. " 'Ship'?"' Virgil smirked at Logan. "Wait, when did you create this one? Did you actually know what ship meant when Patton asked?"
Logan shook his head, ears tinged pink. "No, regrettably, I learned the special significance of that phrase the hard way, shortly after that particular video. It is an unfortunate turn of phrase in a fandom ultimately centered on space ships."
"Oof," Virgil muttered, pointedly ignoring Logan making a note on a fresh index card. He resumed his review of Logan's flashcards. "Wait, 'Malarkey'?" Virgil giggled, causing Logan to briefly smile - Virgil's giggle was a rare, beautiful sound - "Golly, that's a swell flashcard, Mr. Sanders. Why do you have -," Logan stared at him, the traces of his smile still tugging at the corners of his lips.. "Oh, right." Virgil shook his head. "I'll give you that one." Virgil grew quiet as he flipped through several cards one after the other. He looked up at Logan. "You have cards for each member of MCR?" He shook his head, squinting his eyes at the cards. "These aren't slang words ... they're -,"
Logan adjusted his glasses again, staring at the floor. "They are all members of your favorite musical group." He shrugged slightly. "It seemed like an important set of details with which I should be familiar ... were they to ... come up in conversation." Virgil was very quiet and Logan hesitated before raising his eyes, uncertain how he would react. Logan's eyes grew wide when he looked up to see Virgil's eye shadow had turned a brilliant, sparkling purple.
"You researched my favorite band just in case it happened to come up in conversation with me?" Virgil smiled with an open mouth, revealing his surprise.
Logan shrugged again, "Well, of course. I, well ... It has not escaped my attention that you suddenly can distinguish the NCC 1701-A from the 1701-B."
"That's different, Teach. It's important to you that we get the details right in your story."
Logan moved to sit next to Virgil on the edge of his bed. He cleared his throat and put his hand over Virgil's. "And you are my best friend and your interests are important to me, as well." Logan clamped his lips together as soon the words left his mouth. He hadn't quite meant to say all of that. Virgil was silent, looking at the logical Side's cards, noticing for the first time how many seemed directly related to his interests. "Virgil, I apologize. I appear to have made you uncomfort-,"
Virgil interrupted him by throwing his arms around his shoulders, muttering a quick, "Thanks, Lo. You're my best friend, too," before running out of the room, leaving the cards behind on Logan's bed.

There's a protocol for dealing with criticism or anon hate that most people follow without thinking. You either ignore it, make a joke about it to show that it didn't hurt you, or apologize even if you didn't do anything wrong. Since you don't ignore the anons, joke around about serious issues, or apologize for existing, people take that as a challenge or a threat. You're saying what most people don't have the courage to say and getting hate for it. I apologize on behalf of my species.
Interesting thought process. I wonder why that would be the case. Why is that threatening? Isn’t that what people want? It’s what they say they want.
Do they not actually want people to be obvious and honest or discuss things seriously?
I’ve been accused in the last several days of not hearing critique, and hence people must embrace extreme actions to make it obvious to me that I should repent, or...something like that. I can’t think what the point of that blog is except to attempt to make me confess all and repent, but whatever. It didn’t work for the papacy. Won’t work now. I digress. I was saying that I do not think that has proven true at all. When I am confused about something, I ask to have clarification. When I learn I was wrong about something, I admit it.
For example: I used to use the word “half-wit” to describe certain kinds of people. I did this out of being accustomed to the term and from the belief that this term had more to do with willful ignorance, until several people told me that it had more to do with brain damage. I was confused. I expressed concern that it meant something to do with only using half the brain. I was informed there are many people who only use half their brain in actuality and get along just fine. I spent a full day reading about brain damage to hemispheres and learning that it’s in fact true that humans can survive with only half their brains, and remain fully intact as people. That was astonishing. And I said so. And I admitted I was wrong. And I have not used th sword since. So too with “gypsy” which now makes me cringe to hear.
I have learned about trans people and racial groups I’d never have met in person. I’ve learned about modern thoughts on many things from racism to misogyny. I have learned new slang. I have learned about gender identity. Many many things, at which I was at first very poorly aware of the newest thoughts or shared culture. You all act as if this is life and obvious. Of course I’d know these things because they’re there to be found. Except you’re born to the internet and global communication. I am still acclimating to the idea of using the google, or being able to ask someone in another country about events, or searching urban dictionary for slang. It’s terribly new to me. You say “But Simon, you’ve been around while the internet was invented” and I say he’s but, it was a novelty I didn’t fully embrace. I didn’t sit down and take stock of anything there was to be had on tumblr until five years ago. In that time, I have learned and absorbed a tremendous amount and I believe...I have proven I can embrace terms and thoughts and ideas just fine. I simply ask that it be done politely, and from an honest place of understanding that I am not one of you and this is actually work to me. Hard focused work. I do it because I want to learn. Very much. So if you want to teach me, please do. But don’t cudgel me to death with information you think I lack.
I think the issue is, I will not admit I am wrong about things that I have not been convinced I am wrong about, nor will I apologize for things I haven’t done. I’ve finished with that type of life. I don’t know if you are right, but it you are, I am doomed to interact I suppose...

Fic Writer Interview
Thank you to @sapphosewrites for tagging me!
Name: Vermin
Fandoms: Currently Star Trek, and DS9 specifically has eaten my brain. But I’ve been in and out of fandom for the past 20 years, so there have been many. I’ve more often been an avid reader and lurker than an active participant, though. The last fandom I was most actively involved in (and wrote the most fic for) was Life on Mars (UK), and that was a while ago. Other fandoms have included: Good Omens, Due South, Sherlock Holmes, and of course my very first gateway fandom, Harry Potter.
Where you post: AO3 and Tumblr. You can still find a lot of my older fic posted on my LJ, although I don’t post there anymore. Every once in a blue moon I get a notification from FF.net and am momentarily reminded that I still technically have an account there (though I can’t remember the last time I used it).
Most popular one-shot: That depends on your definition of a one-shot, lol. My top fic in terms of kudos is False Friends and False Prophets, which is technically part of a series (Where No Occult [or Ethereal] Being Has Gone Before), but then again, all the works in that series are written to work as standalones while existing within a shared crossover universe. If we exclude those then the next option is Freedom’s Just Another Word, except that while that is not currently listed as part of the This Be The Verse series (for thematic reasons), it is based on a flashback in Tell Me You See Me and I do consider it part of that universe, even though it can be read independently.
So I guess my most popular indisputable one-shot would be my first Garak/Bashir fic, Bound in Shallows and in Miseries.
Most popular multichapter: Tell Me You See Me (not that I have a lot to choose from)
Favorite story you’ve written so far: This was more difficult than I expected! Here are the ones that particularly stand out in my mind:
Tin Star (Life on Mars, 2009): Not counting a few drabbles, this was my second work for LoM. The first one, Convergence, is from the POV of a character who doesn’t appear onscreen in canon (and probably doesn’t exist), so Tin Star was my first real attempt at writing the POV of one main cast. I found the idea of writing Gene Hunt pretty intimidating, and was (and still am) very pleased with how this came out. Also, my favorite LoM writer, @lozenger8, beta-read it and told me it was awesome, and 11 years later I still feel all warm and fuzzy about this.
Mater Familias (I, Claudius, 2009): My first and longest work of I, Claudius fanfiction, written for a once annual ficathon on LJ called Femgenficathon (shoutout to @gehayi who modded it - it was a great event). I’m not entirely sure why I landed on this particular idea. I’d been joking about writing IC fic for years, but if you’d asked me prior to writing this what characters I’d most like to write about, Antonia the Younger wouldn’t have been high on the list. But once the idea occurred to me, I really relished delving into Antonia’s psyche. I’m also fond of this fic because there’s so little IC fic out there, and I’m rather pleased to have contributed something. (There was a point a few years ago when there were 6 works of I, Claudius fic on AO3 and 4 of them were by me.)
On the Benefits of a Classical Education (Jeeves & Wooster, 2012) – To quote my author’s note: “at about 1:00 a.m. after a round of grading undergraduate papers, I reached that point of giddy insanity where the idea of writing one's grading comments in Wodehousian pastiche seems like basically the funniest thing, ever. My coping mechanisms, let me show you them.” This is definitely one of the weirdest and silliest things I’ve written, but it still makes me grin when I reread it. (Yes, I do laugh at my own jokes.)
On Transmutation [and Tortoises] (Good Omens, 2011): As someone who has studied (and now teaches) evolutionary theory, I got a big kick out of writing about evolution in a universe where creationism is canon. Not to mention telling jokes about Darwin riding tortoises. (I make a point of reading that particular passage in The Voyage of the Beagle to my students.) And I owe @anthean some credit for giving me the prompt that produced this. :)
Writ in Water (Sherlock Holmes [ACD], 2015): This is essentially an interplay between two brilliant people trying to suss each other out while avoiding talking about their own respective existential crises. There’s no romance between them – it’s just Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler having a meandering conversation while meandering around Rome, after an accidental meeting during the Great Hiatus. My characterization of Irene Adler came out of my dissatisfaction with her characterization in recent adaptations. I think I started c. 2011, and I didn’t finish it until years later. There’s a lot of self-indulgence in this one. I majored in Classic Civ and spent a semester abroad in Rome, and my love for the city is pretty evident throughout. It’s littered with references to ancient history, there’s some gratuitous poetry, and the climax is set in the Protestant Cemetery, which is one of my favorite places in the city.
I honestly think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever written.
This Be The Verse (Star Trek: DS9, 2020): This fic is about my strained relationship with kidfic as a genre lol. I periodically get the urge to binge-read all the kidfic for a particular fandom/pairing, but then I usually end up being disappointed by most of it. So this started with me idly contemplating why kidfic often doesn’t work for me (and why I keep reading it anyway). And because of my current fandom preoccupation, this inevitably involved taking a hard look at the delightfully dysfunctional DS9 cast and wondering just what sort of parents they would be, and how their flaws might affect their children, and how the found family aspects of the show might manifest in the next generation. (Not sure how all this idle speculation ended up spiraling so wildly out of control, but here we are, and now I am just overflowing with ideas for this universe.)
I’m not 100% satisfied with all of this fic, but the epilogue is definitely one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. It also has a special place in my heart for being the first multichapter fic I’ve ever finished. (And the first one I’ve posted since I was in high school.)
Fics you were nervous to post: I used to get nervous about all of it (less so, these days). But one of the ones I was most nervous about was probably Convergence, which was my first substantial work in Life on Mars (I’d only written a couple of drabbles prior to this). I was really nervous about writing for LoM, because the setting and the dialogue style were pretty far outside my wheelhouse. Being a 21-year-old Californian, 1970s Mancunian copper slang wasn’t exactly part of my day-to-day vocabulary. (Oh, hey, I’d totally forgotten that you beta-read this for me, @sunnyrea!)
How do you choose your titles: I tend to gravitate to quotes (usually poetry or song lyrics) and/or wordplay of some kind. Sometimes I just pick out a significant word or phrase from the fic itself.
Do you outline: Frequently, although I rarely stick to my outlines religiously.
Complete: Nearly everything I have on AO3 is complete
In progress: Just counting posted WIPs, there’s Tell Me You See Me and Attack of the Giant Mutant Killer Rabbits
Prompts: Sure, but you have to come write them on my shower notepad. ;)
Upcoming work you’re most excited about: I have a number of ideas for additional works set in my This Be The Verse AU, but the one I’ve already written a substantial amount of (~13,000 words) is tentatively titled A Bag Full of God. This I originally had saved as ‘The Other Kind of Kidfic,’ although that’s misleading: it is de-aging fic, but they’re de-aged to 19-year-olds, so they’re not technically kids. It’s one that starts off fairly comedic and then gets progressively darker.
Worlds I would love to write for in the future: No idea. Fandoms tend to sneak up on me. But I have a feeling I’ll be stuck in the ST universe for a while. There’s just so much to play with, there. And I’ve found the fandom a very hospitable place to hang out in both on and offline (talked to a lot of lovely people at ST Las Vegas when I was there a few years ago, for instance). That said, I wouldn’t mind trying my hand at writing more Sherlock Holmes fic some day. (I have a thing for old school fandoms, apparently.)
Tagging everyone I’ve already tagged in this and anyone else who wants to fill it out!

as someone who studied multiple languages in a language school, including english for 13 very long years across primary, middle and high school, and as someone who studied the development throughout the centuries of my own native language (italian) in the past 5 years of high school, let me say that this phenomenon of aave being wrongly perceived as “stan twitter slang” by so many people is incredibly interesting to me
in this post i won’t devolve into the racist implications of this phenomenon, as a white person it’s not my place to say what is racist and what is not, i just wanna talk about my own personal observation, from a language student’s point of view
as i’ve already said, my native language is italian, and before finding out about it on twitter and tumblr, i had no idea that basically 99.9% of what i thought was internet language, was actually just aave. hell, i didn’t even know what aave was
that can be very easily explained: i live in italy, i don’t know any african-americans irl. i mean, i know some Black italians personally, but in my day to day life i never hear anyone speaking english orally, and my only representation of what english sounds like is only coming from either my white italian teachers in english class, or the internet itself, and i’m sure that it’s like this for a lot of other young people here on the internet
i do find it interesting that most of non-native english speakers don’t even know what aave is, i know for sure that i wouldn’t know about it if it weren’t for Black americans talking about it on twitter and tumblr. i genuinely had no idea that Black americans even talked in a different way from nb americans until i started watching, out of my own personal choice, US films and tv shows with subtitles, instead of dubbed
besides the obvious and popularized difference between the british and the us accent (which, by the way, i could write an entire post about this thing alone, but i won’t talk about it now), if it weren’t for the internet i wouldn’t know that the UK has dozens of different accents, or that the US has different dialects, or that australians have a whole different accent
which brings me to the point i’m trying to make: language teachers should teach about the different accents and dialects; i don’t mean that they should teach you every single accent and dialect at the same time, because there’s no time at all to do that; but i mean that teachers should at least say that there are so many divergences from the usual grammatical rules within the same language
i think it’s extremely important to teach students that not everyone you meet who speaks a certain language will speak in the same way that your teacher does, which i mean yeah it should be obvious, but sometimes it just isn’t?
when you’re used for 13 years to listening to the same words being pronounced in always the same way, you start to think that that’s the only possible way to pronounce them, or that that’s the only grammar that exists
aave is especially an interesting dialect in itself because, as opposed to most dialects, is not regional, but rather cultural; and it can’t be classified as an accent because it’s not just the pronunciation of words that changes, but there are a lot of grammatical divergences from US english spoken by non-black people. it’s a dialect, but spoken by lots of different people scattered across the same country, which is... strange, and amazing at the same time
anyways, normalize teaching students about the more informal parts of a language - dialects, accents, and especially about aave in english, without treating it like a “funny” dialect, but rather as the extraordinary linguistic phenomenon that it is, students not only need, but deserve to know how complex and intricate and deep the language that they’re learning is; i think english is extraordinary as a language and i wish more people understood the complexity of it
and... don’t use aave if you’re not Black, just don’t, it’s not yours to use, and it doesn’t make you funny, especially when you don’t even know the grammatical rules, you’re only embarrassing yourself. i’m saying this as an italian who often sees non-italians trying to be funny by mocking an italian accent and doing our “funny” gestures (which are a language of their own btw)
