Do you have any tips for a new cane user? I just got my first cane and I want to be sure I'm using it right, I got it because of chronic pain and sometimes my knees or hips give out and I fall

Congrats on your first cane! It’s a big step to start using a mobility device (though it really shouldn’t be...yay ableism), but it can make such a difference for people with chronic pain or mobility issues. Some tips I have are as follows:

Get a backup cane- if you are at all able to, get a backup cane and keep it somewhere useful. For instance, I keep a backup cane in my car so that if I ever forget my cane, I’m not out of luck. I ended up getting the second one after forgetting my cane on a terrible pain day. Don’t wait until that happens, get yourself a back up and rest assured that you are prepared. 

Your wrists/hands are going to hurt- using a cane puts stress on your muscles and joints in ways that are different from normal so you are likely to experience some pain as you adjust to your cane. You may even develop calluses on the hand you use your cane in

Make sure you use it on the correct side- if you are having the most problems with your right leg, use the cane with your left hand and vice versa. If you issues are more variable, you can swap off which side you use it on based on what hurts the most at that time. If your pain is distributed equally, take turns using it on each side so as to not over stress one side of your body. 

Decorate it!- your cane is a part of your life now and you should embrace it. Dress it up with stickers or sharpie or ribbons or whatever else you can. Make it fit your personality (though if you have professional/serious events you’ll need your cane for, it may be wise to have an un-decorated one for those circumstances (did someone say backup cane?))

Be prepared for invasive questions- a lot of people are ableist jerks and will proceed to ask invasive or inappropriate questions when they see you using a cane, particularly if you are young. I’ve been asked “What’s wrong with you?” “What happened to you?” and other lovely variations. You are not required to answer anyone. It is rude, invasive, and ableist of them to be demanding personal medical info from you.

Update

Currently working on the next chapter of Juxtaposition and finishing up some of Zuko's teashop adventures, but all of that might take a while to be published. I'm going through some personal stuff, and it's impacting my writing.

That being said, who wants to hear the story of my experiment where I ask as many cisgender women as possible to define womanhood to me, your friendly neighborhood spidertrans? It's an interesting tale. Especially considering that Florida contains a diverse sampling of some of the most socially conservative groups we have.
