(tldr: op’s rambling and unhinged thoughts on Amok Time)

“I will do what I must, T'Pau, but not with him. His blood does not burn. He is my friend.”

as much as we all love a good fuck-or-die spin on pon farr, there’s something about the original episode—and this line in particular—that hits a different way (for context, this line is after kirk becomes t’pring’s challenger but before he learns the fight is to the death)

like—what if you loved someone so much you would surface from your madness, if just for a moment, to plead for your friend to be spared? what if you loved someone so much you would beg an exception from traditions passed down from the beginning of time so they wouldn’t be harmed?

while the framing of this episode is the classic “fuck or die,” the main heart of the conflict ends up being more akin to “kill or die” when spock’s condition, originally only dangerous for himself, puts kirk in mortal danger as well and the plot becomes “how do they both get out of this alive and unharmed?”

and there’s something powerful in that sentiment, in fighting to save someone despite all the trappings of biology and tradition, that makes this a romantic moment more so than the other aspects of the episode, because if you look at it objectively, pon farr is awful, with both your consent and bodily autonomy taken away from you (eventually, there’s the third path with kirk’s fake-out-death that resolves the conflict, but the issues of this situation still remain)

so for me, as someone sliding vaguely around the scale but usually somewhere around gray-ace, it’s the depth and strength of caring in this quote that really stuck with me after the episode—it’s love, it’s obviously and undeniably love, but it fights against the trappings of the situation, and that’s something that you don’t often see outside the episode

(don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of fics that chose this theme that are well-written and enjoyable, but there can be this amatonormativite idea that sex and/or romantic connection are the only possible solutions when love exists in infinite forms, none of which are higher of lesser for their nature. for example—the original episode, due to the era in which it was written and the showrunners not intentionally writing spirk as romantic, comes off now as more of an asexual/qpr situation, but in my ideal hypothetical universe with explicit romance between the two, the resolution between the two could still be the same as in the original for reasons stated above)

hey, i saw you received an ask from wwangila asking for aid for a sick child in palestine named osaid and it looked a little odd to me so i went and checked it out.

the original ask comes from a blog that looks like it was created yesterday, with a few reblogged posts about palestine and a few liked posts.

i reverse searched the pfp and the gofundme page came up. the text on that fundraiser, which is at 4k out of the 15k goal, says osaid's father is someone named Fadi Abu Raida, not asnet wangila, whose paypal is attached to the account that sent the original ask.

additionally, i found this https://www.tumblr.com/paperjamz/746952663137157120?source=share post on tumblr with a screenshot of a tweet from an account that seems to be osaid's father, with updates on his condition: they've evacuated to egypt but still need funding for medical care for osaid, which is the gofundme link and the paypal attached to that tumblr post under the name fadi raida.

i really hope my information is correct, but if anyone else wants to double check and make sure i would appreciate that because i've done everything i can think of.

i hope this isn't a bother, but i wanted to make sure that the attention and donations were going to the person who needs them, because there are really terrible scammers who take advantage of people's emotional reactions and rip off real fundraisers to take people's money, which seems like what might be going on with the original ask.

The thing is, I have this mental concept of what the Basic Cody/Anakin Fic Background would look if it were a big enough ship to have a standard assumed Getting Together narrative shape that would hang in the background of fics that chose to focus on specific moments.

But the 75k slowburn in my head, with all the emotional conflict and character development and relationship growth it entails, does not exist, and I do not have the mental energy to write it with the year I've had.

Anyway it's got a special spot in my heart. I'm probably due for a re-read tbh.

So this whole Angels Take Manhattan discourse with @spoofymcgee has reminded me that an alternative final episode to Amy and Rory literally came to me in a dream like 2 months ago.

It's a bit like Amy's Choice, which is to say, even my subconscious realised that Amy choosing between her real life and the Doctor is the ultimate end of her character.

She has a nice house with Rory and her children, when the Doctor comes to visit. Everything turns into plastic toys around them until they do to. A bit similar to Night Terrors. Then they die. Then it goes back to the beginning. This time the doctor urges them to stop believing that their house and life are real so they break the spell and don't die. They don't listen, and die. The next time, they try really hard to not believe. "It's like that time in the TARDIS with the dreamlord" they say, "right?" And they die anyway. The next time, one of them (not sure yet who it fits more) calls the doctor out. "It's not us who need to stop believing. This *is* real. It's you who needs to let go." 11 is the doctor who can't say goodbye, who hates endings. So he won't. And they die, but this time they're not in the beginning. They're outside. The sky is dark and stormy. The doctor gives a parting monologue, and disappears.

Amy and Rory are at home. Some things are still plastic toys. But Clara is there, she's the nanny of course, and she tells them things will take a bit to revert back to normal because they both stopped believing their life is real. "How can this be real? We have children!" they say, but Clara assures them and tells them they need to go back to believing. So they do. The plastic turns back to real. And they live happily ever after. And we never know what the hell just happened.

I really, really need to get to writing it. I think it's great.

Bit touch and go on this one. I've read some really good ones, but there's nothing inherent to the trope that grabs me the way other species-adjustment types do, so I can't imagine myself writing one unless it's for a prompt or gift.

I do have recs, though! I think the absolute best wingfic I've read was Hollow and Honeycomb by antistar_e (kaikamahine), but if you want a Star Wars rec, I'd go for you said close your eyes and just believe by Spoofymcgee.

(from my main but this is variousqueerthings): am really enjoying reading your analyses of amy -- I definitely felt more resonance with her on this last Big watch I did, when I could disconnect the way she would at times be underserved by the writing, from what was actually going on in her story, and it's fun going from there to reading deeper analysis that picks on those threads even further

I don't know if this refers to only my straight analyses I've posted on this blog, the rambling rants I've done in the tags of other people's posts, or my fics (someone once called a fic of mine an "eloquent rant" and sometimes I feel like that's a great way to describe the more "character-study"-esque of my fics), but either way thanks! I actually had my own reevaluation of Amy Pond as a character when I got back into Doctor Who this year thanks to various other blogs/others analyses (shout out to @saint-eleventh, @thefiresofpompeii, @spoofymcgee, @ameliapondmd, and plenty of others, including you, @variousqueerthings, with your rewatch series). The first time around, when I watching Doctor Who as a freshman in high school, I couldn't pick apart the Moffatisms from the foundation of a very compelling character full of fascinating contradictions and unabiding faith and a desperate loneliness that connects so well with Eleven's. (I also, full admission, hadn't gotten the shift between how companions were written in Davies' era v. Moffat's, with the companion's arc being as integral to the story during 9 and 10 v. during 11's- though I am also now realizing the mistakes that Davies made, especially with his handling of Martha and other black characters.) Now, though, I can ride with the fairytale vibes of Season Five, which has steadily risen through my season rankings, and can also appreciate the push-and-pull of Amy Pond.

I hate love triangles but looking at Rory and the Doctor now as embodying the themes of domesticity/growing up/stagnation v. travelling/danger/curiosity and the way that the narrative constantly tries to shove Amy into the former (literally making her a wife, a womb, a mother, a vessel, stripping away her agency at every turn) makes it all the clearer how Amy, whenever given the chance, turns to the TARDIS. She doesn't want Rory to die in Amy's Choice but chooses him by choosing the TARDIS and life with the Doctor. Her biggest act of agency in the show is demanding the Doctor show up at her wedding, literally yanking him into existence and demanding that he prove to the world that her faith in him was never mad, was always the most sane thing in the world. Even at the end of the God Complex, when she should hate him more than anything, she still believes in him (and frankly, he believes in her. Eleven and Amy are each other's gods as much as they are each other's best friends).

I think that Eleven and Amy are made for each other in the same way that Nine/Rose, Ten/Martha, and Twelve/Clara are made for each other, to believe in each other, to change each other, to make each other's stories full. I love Donna&Ten, Clara&Eleven, and Bill&Twelve as much as anyone else does (I seriously adore all of these dynamics), but you can't tell the Doctors' stories and arcs without the first set of pairings I mentioned. And realizing that about Amy and Eleven and the effect they had on each other (the fact that after eight hundred years without her, she is still the last face he sees before he regenerates, the fact that she can literally remember him from nonexistence) really made me realize the potential and impact of her run as a companion/their dynamic this go 'round. I think that's the great thing about a show that runs for this long and with so many doctor&companion pairings- you are constantly going to bump up against these relationships that transcend friendship and romance and go into world-shattering, character-arc-altering, often-verging-on-codependent dynamics that impact both sides for the rest of their lives.
