Card Thoughts of the Day #2 (08/30/2023) Another metagame destroying entry already? SPYRAL Double Helix, released in the set Circuit Break (CIBR) in 2017, is a Link-2 monster belonging to the World Premiere SPYRAL theme. It allows the user to Special Summon any SPYRAL monster from their deck by successfully calling the type of card on top of your opponent's deck, a gimmick shared by many other SPYRAL monsters, while also being treated as "SPYRAL Super Agent" on the field. Before the release of Double Helix, SPYRAL was considered to be a weak theme. This was primarily because many SPYRAL cards (But mainly SPYRAL Quik-Fix) needed the user to control SPYRAL Super Agent on the field to use their effects, but because the basic Super Agent was limited to either a Normal Summon or a gamble reliant Special Summon, it was difficult to reliably get him on the field. Other monsters were able to take SPYRAL Super Agent as their name, such as "SPYRAL Tough" but they were equally difficult to get on the field. Ironically, many of the most powerful SPYRAL cards later on were released in the first wave of cards (SPYRAL GEAR - Big Red, SPYRAL Quik-Fix, SPYRAL GEAR - Drone), and were seen as having a lot of potential.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Double Helix, by being an Extra Deck monster treated as "SPYRAL Super Agent," unlocked that potential, becoming notorious for enabling SPYRAL as a strategy that could spam Link monsters easily and quickly by Special Summoning SPYRAL Quik-Fix or SPYRAL Master Plan from your deck to begin a combo, seeing mass adoption in the OCG and TCG metagame for a time. Later on in 2020, it reappeared alongside the newly released Magicians' Souls, a consistency tool allowing the user to send SPYRAL Master Plan from their Deck to the GY, with a further refined Link spam strategy, albeit not as all-encompassing to the metagame as it's 2017 counterpart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My thoughts on SPYRAL Double Helix and the SPYRAL theme are complicated. Like a lot of other World Premier themes, the art of SPYRAL is phenomenal. It provides a very clean modern-day aesthetic, clashing (but in a good way) to the more magical or fantastical themes in Yu-Gi-Oh, alongside a small story about a teacher turning on his student and their organization. It's gameplay, however, involves a lot of Soft Once Per Turn abuse and generic link monsters, which does put me off of the strategy as a whole. However, I do hope that with the newly revealed SPYRAL Double Agent, SPYRAL Master Plan makes it off the TCG Banlist so SPYRAL players in the TCG can enjoy their deck to the fullest.

Let’s talk Helena Wayne bc like it’s criminal that we barely get anything about her and that they completely changed her origin and family (the bertinelli mafia family) to add her into the main comic book line.
im torn bc I love both versions of her :(
But I wanted Dick to share some older siblings trauma with her and for Damian to have that “blood” sibling bc I think that would have completely rocked early Damian’s shit. All his life, he was told to be the true heir of Bruce Wayne, but it turns out he has an OLDER SISTER BRUCE HID FROM TALIA AND RA. Idk I just think that would have crushed his lil murder ego and made for some interesting sibling moments and an interesting dynamic.
Lastly, can we talk about how the Batfam fandom completely stole all of Helena (Bertinelli)’s character traits and gave them to Jason??? Im sorry but when in the material source has Jason ever been super devout and catholic? Helena is the religious one, why am I reading about Jason’s apparent Catholicism in fics and HC dumps? Also Jason (besides his Robin days) has never been this savour and protector of the woman and children of Gotham, that’s very very veryyyyyy clearly a trait from Helena and strongly ties into her backstory as a child who suffered coming from a rich bloodline of syndicate crime. And don’t think this is me bashing on Jason, bc it’s not!! I love Jason Todd - but for who he is. Not for this weird fandom version of him who is either still suffering from the craze the lazarus pit puts you through, or this Joan of Arc of Gotham character either.
I'm gonna be honest with you, this character confuses me a bit. I know that Bruce and Selina got married and had a daughter in their Earth-Two incarnations, and this daughter is Helena Wayne, who's Dick best buddy and a vigilante in her own right called Huntress.
Then I know Helena Bertinelli, daughter of a mafia lord who was introduced in the late 80s in the preboot comic continuity, and was a quite murdery vigilante called Huntress who Bruce didn't accept because she "reminded him of Barbara" (you gotta love DC's excuses for sexism and ableism lol it's not like Barbara was dead just paralyzed. Also it did not look like Bruce gave a shit about it at the end of TKJ that Joker had crippled her - "she reminds him or Barbara". LMAO Bruce).
Then post reboot the title Huntress was given back to Helena Wayne, however Helena Bertinelli is ALSO there and she's ALSO called Huntress? She appears in the Grayson run where Dick is an agent of Spyral, and she seems to be Italian-American but I don't think her origin is the same as in preboot? Also I have no idea about Helena Wayne's continuity post reboot - when she was conceived, who raised her, how did she become a vigilante, neither I have any idea where to find this info.
I agree that if she had been raised by Bruce it could have made for an interesting dynamic amongst the bats and birds. It did in Earth 2 even if only Dick is just there - they're not siblings but they also aren't not siblings? The dynamic is murky and I love murky. Pretty sure it would have changed everything for Damian as well, especially the fact that she would have most likely been the first object of Damian's need to prove himself worthy, instead of Tim.
That being said, not much of what you mentioned is fanon about Jason.
Jason had an arc in which he's a priest. Pretty normal that fans HC him as devout or anyway catholic.
Tumblr media
Father Todd in Flashpoint: The World of Flashpoint Vol. 1 - this is an AU in which Jason was never taken in by Bruce and was never Robin.
As for the whole "protector of women and children" thing, you probably know that Jason was born in extreme poverty, his father was in and out of prison and his mother died of overdose. He is very much a child who suffered because of a broken system, and given how harshly he reacts when women and children are the recipient of violence "in his Robin days", is it really that strange that fans assume he carried these traits in adulthood?
We see him being sweet and protective to kids many times, or anyway losing his mcfucking shit when children are being harmed (like in Brothers in Blood). Imo that of Jason caring about vulnerable people is barely a headcanon, and I don't see how this would make him the Joan of Arc of Gotham either - if I'm being honest ALL vigilantes should care about minorities and vulnerable people, it's the other way around that is weird as fuck (like that arc in which Dick almost dies to prevent this guy from shutting down Bludhaven's casinos, like what the hell was Tim Seeley thinking exactly).
That being said, I understand your frustration if the character you like doesn't have recognition. Trust me I do! There's a lot of them for me too, especially female and/or non white characters who had maybe 1 run ages ago and then got forgotten by DC, and I would REALLY LIKE to see them more, and to see them acknowledged more by the fans (from the top of my mind, Jenni Ognats or Patricia Trayce).
But this isn't fandom's fault. As I mentioned before, Helena Bertinelli as a fleshed out character was a thing between 20 and 30 years ago, and most of tumblr's userbase was either very young or not born yet. DC forgot about her, stripped Huntress from her to give it to Helena Wayne, then brought her back but as an agent of Spyral and it really doesn't look like they care. Fans can't be held accountable for the fact that she's simply not there. They didn't "steal" Helena's traits to give them to Jason; this implies a willful and malicious intent from people who saw this character and decided her features fit another character better, and it's obviously not what happened - people barely know Helena Bertinelli exists if at all.
Also - I said this about Jason already and I will repeat it a million times: Jason wasn't picked at random from the sea of DC characters to be people's blorbo, he resonates with fans for a reason. Under the Red Hood is a deeply emotional and relatable arc for many people because it's the story of how a child was failed by every single person who was supposed to protect and guide him, and then was failed again as an adult victim who demanded to be seen and heard and acknowledged, and instead was silenced again. It's heartbreaking to see how many people see this and say "this is me, this is what happened to me", but it is what it is, and most of all there is no taking this away from Jason's fans. DC tried to villainize him, to make him look and sound like a madman, to make him unhinged and deranged and they had Tim suggest that "maybe it's the Lazarus Pit that drove him mad", but it didn't work and fans still love him and still consider him a symbol of how "bad victims" are treated worse than their abusers, and keep being retraumatized by a society that prefers turning a blind eye to violence than deal with the issue at its root.
And lastly, bitching won't get you anywhere. I am the living proof that the right way to make people interested in something is to be passionate about that something. You want more folks to pay attention to Helena Bertinelli, then since DC won't do anything with her, the most effective thing you can do is post about her - write essays, draw her, write fics with her, create webweavings and moodboards, commission this stuff if you don't have the skills. Complaining that she should be the recipient of fandom love won't make anyone more interested in her.

SPYRAL Double Agent
"If you have a 'SPYRAL' card on your field or in your GY: You can Special Summon this card from your hand to your opponent's field in Defense Position (but it cannot be Tributed, nor be used as material for a Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Summon), then both players reveal the top card of their Deck. You can only use this effect of 'SPYRAL Double Agent' once per turn. All 'SPYRAL' monsters on the field gain 500 ATK, also 'SPYRAL Super Agent' on the field can attack directly."

I have a very quickly fic idea growing centering around a rewrite/AU of Battle for The Cowl and Batman and Robin (2009) where Dick is replaced by Bette Kane. Not as Batman or anything, but as the main “caretaker” so to speak of Damian after he arrives in Gotham.
This came about bc I’m super interested in exploring Bette Kane as a genuine Bat-character rather than a background character that she’s usually portrayed as. I think with her as Flamebird, there’s room to have her directly parallel Dick Grayson as a character.
They’re both athletic, gymnastic heroes without powers and a generally positive attitude. But they can also be antagonistic within relationships as Dick can be…a dick to others and Bette is always regarded as an annoying, clingy person in comics where she features. Bette is just always put down in the comics I’ve read as inexperienced (which I’ve actually never seen put into actual writing with like, an example) which additionally rings untrue when you factor in canonically being Batgirl.
Despite Morrison’s many fuck-ups in Batman Inc alone, I did really like that they brought back Kathy Kane (the og Batwoman) as an agent of Spyral. Taking in her time as Batwoman and Bette’s time as Batgirl, they could parallel Bruce and Dick as mentor/mentee and mother/daughter.
I plan on having Kathy adopt Bette as a direct parallel, but also have Kathy abandon Bette to continue her Spyral duties/fake her death in order to further add to the sense of loneliness/attachment issues that Bette seems to have in canon. There’s a lot to be explored regarding Spyral as a spy agency too. Though obviously when I get to it, Im completely cutting Otto Netz and the N*zi backstory of the organization out. (Seriously Morrison what were you thinking!?!)
While I’m not entirely sure of the overarching plot of the fic yet, I do want to further develop Bette as a full character -tragic backstory and all- and have her interact with Damian. Bette is an 80s California valley girl/competitive athlete type of character that will be super fun writing interacting with Damian’s younger, angstier self.
One big idea I also might add is the inclusion of Gotham heroes who aren’t Bat-related. We get a small glimpse of them in The Network spinoff of the BfTC, but not enough that I would like. I might include snippets of Mother Panic from the Young Animal imprint bc she’s very cool. Ragman is a character I adore (ironically despite the fact that I am not Jewish and Rory Regan is a very Jewish character) so he’ll definitely be given a larger role in BfTC. While I like Ted Grant-Wildcat and I’m still catching up on Yolanda Grant-Wildcat, I’ve read the 2006 Justice Society and I fell in love with Tom Bronson’s Wildcat. So he’s definitely having a role too.
Anyway, to finish this up, if anyone has any Bette Kane comic recs or any fun hcs for her and Damian’s interactions - feel free to tag them!

Pretty good answers got some more :)
1: what nicknames does the duo have for each other? I saw that ppl close to Jake calls him J.G.
2: does Chris have any nicknames for his family? I know daddy Clark & mama Lois.
3: when they have a sleepover, do they sleep in the same bed, or does one or the other sleep on the floor?
4: if you can change one thing about them, besides the typical headcanons, what would you change? Like having Chris be a twin brother to Jon.
5: got any headcanons with the supertwins with the superfamily? I have a few: the boy likes the game god of war & likes watching the first kung fu panda & naruto with Jon.
And I got plenty more answers to give my friend @pin-crusher2000 ;-)
1) I can foresee Jake in turn calling Chris ‘CK’, ‘Chrismeister’ ‘My Loyal Knight’, and ‘Sir Buttkicker’
Then for Chris, besides ‘JG’, he can also nickname Jake with ‘Your Awesome Majesty’, ‘Mr Blueheart’, ‘Sir Incredible’, and ‘Prince Sapphire’
All of those are the more complex nicknames which while they see use, they’re not as common between them as the more simple ‘Buddy’, ‘Friend’ and ‘Pal’ they exchange to each other
2) He’d probably might call Conner ‘Uncle-Bro’ and ‘Cool Bro’, Kara ‘Auntie Amazing’ and definitely for Jon ‘Bro Buddy’ ‘Jon Jonstar’ ‘Best Family Friend Forever’ and finally and most simple yet effective of all ‘Real Superboy’
3) Oh for sure, the Duo have the arrangement of one taking the bed and the other occupying either the floor or if there’s a bunk bed/slide out spare mattered and/or futon then that one. Chris and Jake especially might be cuddly if someone’s in bed next to them but they can also toss and turn quite a bit so best to avoid that as such. Which of the two goes on the bed depends on which place they sleepover at. If it’s at the Kent Farm, Chris claims the bed; If it’s at the Grayson apartment, vice versa.
4) Just a maybe…..I can probably experiment with a relatively simple question that’s been raised by some in this very website, such as @snothing “What if….Mar’i and Jake are twins and partially raised on Tamaran first due to Kory’s royalty duties as interim-Empress of Tamaran; it’s not until like the kids are 8-10 do they all finally arrive on Earth together, and if we adapt DC’s various canons into it, they arrive just either as Dick finally returned after being an agent of Spyral OR after his amnesia fixed up?” The latter bit is my interjection for this idea.
Yeah…a think a little deviation like that can work. Lol
5) Hmmm…..
- Osul takes note of Chris liking to swim at nearby rivers during some off time and, getting into swimwear of his own, sometimes joins him if Chris allows it, which more often than not he does.
- Conner and Jon often alternate between them on who can do Otho’s hair for the day if she asks. Conner often goes for something bold and brash which makes her stand out making a crowd while Jon takes it simple and easy as it helps her feel comfy while giving her that feeling of being ready for the day
- Conner, Chris and Jon often times are the ones teing scary stories at campfires if they and the Super Twins are out in the woods for the weekend. Chris are often times the scariest as they’re heavily based on real incidents and creatures inside the Phantom Zone he’d been able to remember seeing during his time in there. Worst of all, with all the stories he’s told so far, that’s only about 2% of the Zone’s megafauna so who knows what’s in there…..

Reminder: FYCCA Archetype/Giveaway
The final edition of the main post (linked here) will be posted this weekend on Saturday afternoon (and will include rarities at that time). Reminder to send in your votes to the Inbox (either DM or ask is fine).
The votes (so far) have finally been counted and, among the 100+ archetypes people have voted for, there are three archetypes with over 20 points (and, as of this post, there is a two-way tie for first at 30 points).
As for the last cards to be included, much like Konami does on the last day of reveals where it’s a hodgepodge of cards, so too will this be as listed below, including many cards from over the past ten years that are personal favorites and/or have received a significant number of reposts/likes when I went through the entire archive prior to the contest. They include:
1) SPYRAL Super Agent
2) Lifeless Leaffish
3) Nurse Dragonmaid
4) Transcicada
5) Melffy Rabby
6)  Danger!? Tsuchinoko?

SPYRAL MISSION - Assault
In a surprise turn of events, this card was reverse "censored" when it was released in the OCG from the TCG. As in, they added in some brass knuckles to the two hands on the left side that likely would have been censored if this card had originated in the OCG. It's a fitting addition, and they also fixed up the complete hand on the left edge when they did it, so definitely an improvement happened here. But otherwise, the overall sense of action in this scene was untouched (which those handy dandy speed lines help define). My favorite part of this is the expression of the guy on the left. He just KNOWS he's gonna die after getting hit with that electric fist. Speaking of... Haha for giving a SPYRAL archetype card guy a spiral pompadour. It's insane but I love it at the same time.
Rating: 9/10, SPYRAL Super Agent used ThunderPunch!

Sorry wait why is Batfam crossovers with Ladybug and White Collar understandable but crossovers with Danny Phantom aren't?? All of those crossovers seem super random to me (I'm not a Miraculous Ladybug fan but I'm a fan of the other two and I still think it's a weird crossover)
white collar: it was something u just had 2 be there for to understand but back in like the 2010's matt bomer was a HUGELY popular fancast for dick grayson so white collar was free real estate for giffable content. people also eventually combined that with the spyral arc for maximum double agent spy stuff
ladybug: this one i kinda get because of the vigilante secret identity stuff and marinette is about the same age as damian iirc. she's based in france though so idk what the reason is for her to come to gotham but the foundation is there
danny phantom confused me because i didn't know where it came from but now people are like "he's a superhero with black hair and blue eyes" so i mean. crossovers have been made for less

SPYRAL Double Helix ———————————————— 2 "SPYRAL" monsters This card's name becomes "SPYRAL Super Agent" while on the field or in the GY. You can declare 1 card type (Monster, Spell, or Trap); reveal the top card of your opponent's Deck, and if you do, and its type matches the declared type, take 1 "SPYRAL" monster from your Deck or GY, and either add it to your hand or Special Summon it to your zone this card points to. You can only use this effect of "SPYRAL Double Helix" once per turn. ———————————————— Can Be Found In: Circuit Break (CIBR-EN099)
The addition of Link Monsters affected the most known mechanics arround the Extra Deck in different ways. Their introduction was to mitigate the abuse of Extra Deck strategies over the recent years, requiring their pressence to bypass the heavy restriction implemented by the new Extra Monster Zone. However, due the majority of them having very simple summon conditions along effects to assist players, Link Monsters themselves will greatly help the user as long they can manage their arrows wisely to swarm the field with powerful creatures.
"SPYRAL Double Helix" is the only Extra Deck creature the SPYRAL archetype provides to their strategy, but undoubtly one of the core cards to achieve most of their setups and goals with. "Double Helix" will be treated as "SPYRAL Super Agent" while in either our field or Graveyard, becoming a substitute of the most important SPYRAL card as many of their effects require his pressence in some way or another. Like many other SPYRALs "Double Helix" has an effect which makes us guess which kind of card is on the top of our opponent's Deck, and if we guess correctly we can obtain a SPYRAL monster from our Deck or Graveyard to either be added to our hand or be summon in an area "Double Helix" points with its arrows. While far from being one of the strongest members in the build, "Double Helix" abilities gratly assists the archetype by either taking the role of the lead SPYRAL card or using its effect to gather key members in some way or another.
Obviously exclusive to work along SPYRALs due its effects and materials needed, "Double Helix" is quickly available to assist us from early to late game. "SPYRAL Super Agent" and "SPYRAL Tough" can let us guess the opponent's top card to Special Summon themselves, and as long the opponent doesn't rearrange it we can make consecutive summons (Specially "Tough" as has no restrictions for this ability) to gather atleast two monsters for the Link Summon. This method is further improved with the help of "SPYRAL GEAR - Drone", banishing itself from the Graveyard to retrieve a "Super Agent" or substitute to our hand to once again try using their Special Summon effect. To further assure materials, "SPYRAL GEAR - Big Red" and "SPYRAL MISSION - Rescue" will revive SPYRALs in mid to late game to work on the arrival of "Double Helix". Remember that "Double Helix" is treated as "Super Agent" while in the Graveyard, assuring its return after being defeated or used as material by the help of cards like "SPYRAL Gear - Fully Armed" or "SPYRAL Sleeper". Also don't forget that "Double Helix" itself can revive its own copies with its effect, providing us more Link Monsters to work with our Extra Deck.
"Double Helix" pretty much works similarly to "Super Agent" while on the board, but with the big extra of allowing us to search of summon SPYRALs from the Deck and Graveyard. While being treated as "Super Agent", "Double Helix" will gain the assistance of cards like "SPYRAL GEAR - Utility Wire" and "SPYRAL GEAR - Fully Armed" to heavily disrupt the opponent's board. Otherwise its mere pressence will let us revive "SPYRAL Quik-fix" and obtain both a SPYRAL GEAR and a material for other summons (Preferably Xyz Summon to ignore his banishing demerit). Like other SPYRAL effects "Double Helix" might require some luck to guess the opponent's top card in their Deck, but if we haven't used other excavating effects beforehand to know the answer shouldn't be difficult to guess correctly as many Decks carry more Monster cards than any other type. Once we guess correctly pretty much every other SPYRAL monster becomes available for any position and purpose, ranging from summoning or reviving their heaviest members like "SPYRAL Master Plan" and "SPYRAL Sleeper" to adding to our hand "SPYRAL GEAR - Last Resort" and "SPYRAL Super Agent" to either help with their effects from the hand or in case we run out of arrows to summon them. This summoning ability can also be of great help to work along "Double Helix" so we can Link Summon a creature with a higher Link Rating.
"SPYRAL Double Helix" is far from being a tough creature despite its position as a Link Monster, but its abilities greatly assist the whole archetype on their setups from early to late game. Being treated as "SPYRAL Super Agent" gives "Double Helix" the same supporting tools to improve its pressence on the board, including being revived by its own copy if we need to. Its second effect might rely in some luck to obtain it, but once we guess correctly we will gain one of the strongest searching effects in the game by letting us obtain any SPYRAL monster from anywhere to be used in any way needed. But despite its many possibilities "Double Helix" is more limited than it looks as summoning the SPYRALs we'll look by its effect can only be brought close to one of its arrows, and in most cases only one or none of them will become available due their positions in the card. Yet although has some small shortcomings, with the great flexibility of its effects as well easily becoming material for bigger Link Monsters makes "Double Helix" a powerful card to strength board with little to no effort.
Personal Rating: A+
+ Is treated as "SPYRAL Super Agent" on the field or Graveyard + If we guess the card on the top of the opponent's Deck we can summon or add to the hand a SPYRAL monster from our Deck or Graveyard + Several setups and options to work arround its effects
- Below average ATK - We will rely on luck or other effects to guess the opponent's card to obtain its effects - Its summoning effect is dependant of a single arrow if any

SPYRAL Quik-Fix
"If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can add 1 'SPYRAL GEAR' card from your Deck to your hand. If this card is in your GY and you control 'SPYRAL Super Agent': You can discard 1 card; Special Summon this card, but banish it when it leaves the field."
