so apparently the tumblr donation scam farms are moving in on Palestine; this includes both slapping basic phrases like "Free Palestine" into their blog headers, but also some of them go so far as to claim they are Palestinian refugees who need donations.

Here is your routine reminder that whenever you receive an ask in your inbox requesting donations, check their ass. 19 times out of 20 it'll be a brand new blog who reblogged a few posts to seem older than they are, is sending out spam asks to random blogs, and will be deleted in a few days once they've already scammed people.

Check their blog's age by trying to scroll to the bottom and checking the post timestamps. Turn on post timestamps by going to Settings > General Settings > Dashboard Preferences. On any device, you can also see when a post was made by clicking on the 3 dots at the top right of it. Scam blogs reblog an amount of posts to try to seem like they aren't brand new and pretend to have older accounts, and it’s very successful against people who don’t scroll down enough.

Check the location and area code of a PayPal link where/if it says something like country.x=xx. The xx will be a country code. Most tumblr donation scams are for some reason in the Philippines and will have the code PH. No I am not saying to distrust anyone in the Philippines who needs donations, but if a brand new blog is claiming to be a refugee in the Middle East but their PayPal link is from halfway across the world, then well...

Reverse-image search any of the images they use and find if it was stolen somewhere. Remember that these images are often edited to prevent people from easily doing this, and this is not reliable but can be an easy sign if successful

Be careful with blogs that request people send donations through "Friends and Family" on PayPal because you cannot refund money sent in this manner. This isn’t a dealbreaker as many regular users also request this to avoid fines, but is an addendum to scam blogs when enough other red flags are raised. It isn’t unusual for them to insist on receiving money through FaF to the point that some will refund money not sent through that manner to prevent accountability

Follow scam busting blogs like Kyra45 that might pull up evidence you otherwise would not have access to. I guess I'm going to start bringing back my habit of recording the exact paypal addresses that scam blogs use which has sometimes been the only evidence of a new donation blog being a scam, and no one would know this if I hadn't been tracking them

It is disgusting that people would take advantage of an ongoing genocide for their own gain. Please remember to keep an eye out for yourself and the people you follow reblogging suspicious donation posts trying to steal aid from people undergoing a tragedy

Writing Scientist Characters

this post is mainly an excuse to post a certain list of lab supplies I've made for a friend and infodump about lab work. but feel free to use this as a little resource when writing characters who are scientists and/or lab nerds. who knows, maybe it'll be of use.

General thoughts

Many people think it's a stereotype that scientist or nerd characters talk using complex technical jargon. While that is true to an extent, there actually is some kind of lab jargon. It varies across different labs and fields, but one thing they have in common is that it seeks to simplify, not the other way around.

gelelectrophoresis becomes elpho

microbiology becomes mibi

deioninized water becomes aqua dist

biochemistry becomes BC

sodium hydroxide becomes NaOH

They will probably not call a glass of water "silicon dioxide and h2o".

...and more. feel free to get creative. If you're writing in any other language than English, you can throw in one or two anglicisms as well. Also, most scientists will never gatekeep their work, and in an opposite fashion, will not shut up about it unless you make them. And no, most chemists do not know the entire periodic table by heart, only the most relevant elements. (main groups and a few commonly used metals of the subgroups) When it comes to characters doing the lab work, keep in mind that there are a lot more people involved than the scientist themself. Most scientists are more occupied with paperwork and data analysis, it is the laboratory technicians and assistants that do most of the practical work. They often have more lab experience than the scientists themselves.

Things you can have your lab nerd character do instead of making random chemicals explode

writing a lab report (and losing their mind over excel)

degreasing the glass bevel stoppers

removing the permanent marker from beakers (labeling is important)

complaining about the lack of funding of [their field] research

cleaning glassware

preparing specimen for examination

googling the most basic equations for their report

checking if the glassware and utensil collections are complete

steal single use plastic pipettes from their lab

Hello Reddit transfers! Here's some scam spotting tips

Hi! I'm Key (Or Jess), and I'm here to give you some tips to spotting scams. Think of my blog as a subreddit but with several posts a day that often show a scam post or give scam information. All this info is done as a hobby so I'll give you a rundown on the basics of how pet donation scams work here. If you like my hard work, feel free to throw me pocket change or check out my Ko-Fi where I take art commissions. Or just say thanks!

If you share a popular/trending text post, you may get an ask from a blog who wants you to share their pinned pet post. They'll ask you to answer the ask privately but urge you their pet is very ill and needs aid quickly. Commonly, this pet is a cat. But on occasion it's a dog. The ask will tell you their not a bot/etc and are just a person, promise!

If you check the blog, turn timestamps on under dashboard settings. By doing so, you'll get to see the date their pinned post was made. Usually, these posts are only a few hours old or even a few days old so always take caution if you see it's a post that isn't very old. This isn't always a red flag for a scam post, but it's advised to pay attention since you'll see these kind of things often enough since the scammer barely changes up their pattern.

Scrolling the account should also show you how many posts the blog has made. Often, you'll only find roughly 100 posts that are always made within minutes of the other. These posts come from a trending tag of the day generally and are rarely tagged since their just shared all at once and then nothing else. You will usually also see the archive has been turned off since the blog is set to only dashboard view and only accessible to logged in users. This measure isn't always a sign of a scammer, as users can have real reasons for this! But it's a common tactic for scam accounts.

The post tells you the cat/dog is suffering from some medical condition and claims the op will get paid in a few weeks but they need the money before then and they promise they'll pay you back when they reach their goal. Not all users who make posts like that are scam accounts and many of them are real people who will return the help once they can. The op will also tell you to send money by friends and family because they need it quickly and don't want it held up. Usually they'll have a link that will tell you to send them funds there.

However, you may notice some things are off in the post itself. While the op asks for USD, their pay link says their in the Philippines which is not USD and would require conversion rates to apply. Not all PH-based bloggers are scammers and some are disappointed that some people are. Its sadly a well known thing here that this scammer is from there but no one knows who they really are as every name used is stolen off a private aid group. Another thing to do is check the notes and see how many reblogs are directly from the op. Usually you'll find several.

If you want to, it is suggested to ask the op if they can provide you proof they own the cat/dog if your unsure of the legitimacy of their claim. For example, ask them to write their url on a piece of paper and take a picture of it on top of the pet they supposedly own or even post a short video of them calling the pet and holding the paper in sight. Usually this results in the op likely blocking you.

It's suggested to warn anyone sharing these scam posts and reporting scam accounts under Phishing as it's usually the fastest way to deal with them on a daily basis. This scammer has been doing this for years and even brags about how they get away with it since they make hundreds of dollars doing it and ruin the reputation of the names they steal.

These scammers are also stealing content from private facebook groups and reposting them here without the owner being aware of it. The scam accounts are saving pictures and passing them off as their pet. Watermark your vet bill and pet pics in your aid posts if you want to deter scammers from stealing it for future uses. If you are in a fb group that posts vet bill help, please inform them a scammer is going around taking their posts and reusing it for fraudulent reasons. I have seen cases where some scammers even used pictures off Reddit to use for scams.

Summer Shark Au! 🦈

First actual meeting

So when Annabel first arrives in town, some things start happening

Missing pencils

Stolen snacks (tea always remained though)

Splashed research she spent all day on

Her stuff going missing only to end up in the strangest places

So yeah it's Lenore messing with her and being petty, but at a point where Annabel doesn't know a creature is watching her

After the incident in her childhood, Lenore is very cautious and wary of researchers and fishermen

And so one morning, Annabel goes out on a boat to do some research and take a quick assessment of the sealife and water pH and all that

After about an hour, Annabel is ready to head back, so she goes I've to the engine/power motor/whatever it is and it's not working/it's broken (btw Annabel doesn't have a paddle to move the boat so she has to do it with her hands)

Montresor throws out some insults and laughs about how she is now stranded and leaves

And she also doesn't have her phone and Monty threw the communication stuff into the water so she can't notify Morella about being stranded, so she sits there all day

At sunset, she's starting to get a little desperate and is worrying that she's gonna have to spend the night out on the water, when she notices some movement in the water. And then a fin.

She realizes that there's a shark circling the boat, and the boat is pretty small so it's just a tense situation cause she doesn't know what the shark wants

She tries to stay calm and just tries to fix the engine for the 100th time

She looks back and notices a hand trying to steal her bag of snacks

She rushes over and notices that it's a strange looking person/shark thing

She screams and falls over, which sends away Lenore at first (without the snack)

So Annabel realizes that this creature can help her and quickly recomposes herself and tries to call out to the creature, but to no avail

She thinks for a moment and remembers that the creature was trying to grab the food

So she grabs it and holds it over the water (as seen in the first drawing in this post)

And she waits

And waits.....

And waits.

A few minutes later, she's starting to think the creature just left and starts to retract her arm

And a head pops up

Annabel is like "oh!, This is what you want right? I'll give it to you if you help me"

And just continues to talk to coerce the creature into moving closer, so Lenore grabs the snack.

And immediately dives back into the water

Annabel is just like >:0 "oh you sneaky little shi-"

And the boat suddenly starts moving

Annabel nearly falls over but catches herself

She finally makes it back to the dock, where Morella is trying to quickly set up a boat

Morella realized that Annabel was gone for too long and started using a telescope/binoculars to locate her and saw her stranded and started setting up to go help her

She asks Annabel what happened and how she got back and Annabel kinda goes "well there was this-" she turns around and realizes that the creature was no longer there, so she quickly changes her story "uh- I got the engine working again for a moment"

And keeps the strange creature part to herself

And heads back to the house for the day

#OnThisDay: Feb 25th, 2018

Title: Gunpla Expo PH - Friends Meet Up

On Feb 25th, 2018, I went myself to SM Mall of Asia for a 2nd year Gunpla Expo PH (at 10am) [CLICK ME!]. 😁🤖🏢 I've been spend time standing, walking and taking photos and take a selfie myself couple of times before I'm tired, take a seat and eating my snacks. Now I'm waiting for my new friend Romulus907 for about 2 to 3 hours 🕐🕒until I give up waiting and I couldn't find him. 🚶‍♂️ In short, we've haven't meet face to face cause there's too many people just walking through at the Expo, so we're failed but all well... 😅

But at least we're both having fun looking at all different Gunpla's exhibit. 🙂

Nevertheless, I decided to draw one of my four OC's finally met Fuse w/ Haro. They seem to be a great time, hanging out, walking through all Gunplas, buying stuff from the Gunpla store (w/ free stuff after purchased) and finally taking a friendly groupie behind the huge Gundam Exia statue w/ Cude. 😊

BTW: I sucked at drawing Gundam Exia, especially the head though. Please excuse my lack of drawing Mobile Suits. I'm still practicing it, even in 2024. 🙂✍

I'd just hope the next year, it's gonna be a true friendly meet up between me and Romulus907. :) But in mean time, we're both happy! 😁

Siren

Siren is WW, ST + PH link! they are 14. they're still a pirate, but they make more time to visit Aryll and their grandma back on Outset. They are banned from using the windwaker unless absolutely necessary because they're a complete riot of a child. They have a pet pig who is appropriately named Chunk. Aryll made them a bracelet which they wear 24/7! they're small, so they find squeezing into small areas much easier than most others. Has a peg leg

Prince

Prince is ALTTP, ALBW, OOS, OOA, LA + TFH link! he is 16 and is the twin of Queen, his zelda. he and his sister are working royals, so while he is a prince he is also a blacksmith! there is a permanent portal between Hyrule and Lorule in the castle garden, and Ravio still leeches off of lives with him! he's autistic and semi-verbal. he uses crutches to get around. Prince also splits into King, Duke, and Princess, but it only works in Hytopia. They're trying to sort out a way to do it without the wizard

Light

Light is FSA, FS + MC link. he is 17! He splits into Vio, Red, Green and Blue at will. For a good part of his time with the other links, he does not have a shadow, since Shadow died. He's kind of a roulette wheel in terms of how he acts, what he knows and what he can do; but it's easy to adapt to whatever his “mood” is any given day. He and his Zelda are very close, to the point they think of each other as siblings. Light has a minish feather on a necklace along with four charms that represent the colours. He lies a lot, and sometimes he doesn't even realize he's lying. Threatens people to get his way sometimes. Autistic + has ADHD. Blue has OCD and Vio has severe anxiety

Moon

Moon is TP link! his wolf form is much bigger than an average wolf, so it's obviously the result of magic. He's 27 and married to Shad. He mainly looks after the kids in Ordon, but still cares after the goats when he can. He has basically no relationship with his Zelda outside of being civil. He still has a bit of heartache relating to Midna but he's getting better. Basically everyone's parent

Courage

Courage is SS link! He's 28, and married to Wisdom, his Zelda. After killing Demise he gained some of his powers, but he really doesn't like to use them. He has a small fear of storms after what happened to Wisdom and he never really forgave himself for what happened to her. He still has her harp and he's extremely cautious about time since he really doesn't want to be late ever again. His loftwing is called Crime.

Sprout

Sprout is OOT + MM link. he's still got all the masks he got during mm, but his favorite is the deku mask. He's 30! He's in a platonic marriage with Malon, and they live on a farm together. He has a necklace with a blue fairy charm because he still misses Navi :( he likes just sitting in the woods and staring off into space just...doing nothing. it's a bit creepy. Likes to steal. Might be a kleptomaniac, he isn't sure. He has a lot of facial scars due to the overuse of the masks he'd obtained.

Warriors

Warriors is HW link. he's Linkles twin brother! He's 31, and dating Sheik <3 (his Zelda is a trans king tyvm). he basically adopted Sprout during the war and he basically became a single father at that point in life. He has to use a cane to walk and he has a fair amount of burn scars. He's retired but still gives his advice to training soldiers. living his best life. Proxi speaks for him as he is completely mute. he struggles to tell the difference between left and right and uses his hands to remind himself

How would Bruno Madrigal and Cecil de Vil get along?

Well enough, I suppose. It's all about the circumstances of their first meeting, really.

Here's how I see it: Cecil de Vil, who had spent almost a whole year doing video campaigns and fomenting protests to get his niblings out of the Isle of the Lost, trying to raise awareness about the inequality of the crimes people were sent to the Isle for and so on (his sister is in there for stealing dogs! it's not the same as killing multiple people or cursing lands! and Hunter and Ivy were kids who did stupid stuff!), is caught at last and shipped, making it evident his smear campaign against the banishment was pretty much right but ending up as a victim of the system himself. (he never figured out who to blame. people are quick to point fingers at the Beast, but there's something that doesn't work in it, a cog stuck somewhere, someone else behind it all...)

So, he's on a barge and there he meets one of the people he was trying to advocate for (sure, the protest started for his family, but it ended up involving a lot more people), aka Bruno, the man who could see bad futures and Auradon deemed too dangerous to stay free. Bruno, who is shaking and is sad to have left his family behind and hopes they'll be fine, much like Cecil, but with the important difference that the Madrigals were left alone save for him, while Cecil was going to be reunited with his family on the Isle.

The people in the last barges compare notes, share facts, see patterns, perhaps they figure out something (the Security Services are a tad too independent, started to pick people on their own, the royals are too worried about the post-war economy to chase minor criminals like that...), but it's pretty useless because they have no one to share them with except for each other and no one can help them at this point. Hell, Cinderella, a queen, was unable to save her stepsister who she had openly forgiven, once in the Barrier, there's no way out! There was no chance to begin with.

So, Cecil takes pity on Bruno, because Cecil knows he'll have the support of his family once there, as will most of the people of the last barges (Anastasia's husband, the Delgados from Avalor, and so on) while Bruno will be all alone. And Bruno kind of latches to that small kindness. Bruno knows how to make himself useful, it's how he was raised, so that's what he'll do on the Isle, work with those people like them, the ones who weren't criminals and knew how to live a non-magic, ordinary life.

Once Cecil gets on the Isle, the de Vils already have their own properties (Hell Hall, PH's lab, plus some stuff they put their hands on like a couple normal homes and, most importantly, the electric plant, entirely garbage-powered, that PH put together/fixed and the de Vil family controls) and it's easy for a community to form around him, the only one with assured stability, a community of the ones who are not Villains with a capital V. Bruno is a part of it for sure, he has tons of practical, everyday knowledge to share, not like Cecil, who grew up rich and knows a lot less but knows how to listen and recognizes talent and usefulness.

So Cecil and Bruno are not, like, best friends, some people could think of Bruno as one of Cecil's minions, judging from the outside (Cecil doesn't have minions, but Villains thinks in those terms), but for sure they are part of a community and had to rely on each other multiple times, which made them a bit close, close enough that Cecil knows he can ask Bruno to accompany him to do delicate or important jobs and Bruno knows he can reach for Cecil if he's in a pinch, like if people didn't pay him or if he didn't gain enough, Cecil will help.

Once Cruella shows interest in Bruno, Cecil is enthusiastic. He knows Ella remarried a few times but, hey, maybe that's the real thing this time? And he likes the idea of Bruno being his brother-in-law and greets him with open arms and Bruno is happy about it, Cecil is a friend to him, in his view, he was from the beginning, so he leans into the situation and they get closer.

It lasts until Cruella decides to kick Bruno out (and he sneaks back in, in his own way), but even after, they sort of keep in contact and keep helping each other a bit. It's rare to have strong allies on the Isle, but the community around Cecil is solid, he knows the value of connections, and Bruno will always be a part of it.

Tommy had been a vigilante for over a year now and had seen some pretty weird things. A toilet paper thief, a gang that used rats to communicate, a dog with its own blog, you get the gist. He was certain that nothing would phase him.

That is, until he got sucked into a portal to another universe and was mistaken as Spider-Man. His suit didn't even have a spider on it the fuck.

This was gonna be a long day.

Tommy turned in confusion. "What?"

Phantom looked down for a moment before looking back up and meeting him in the eyes. "My name's Wilbur."

Tommy blinked. Once. Twice. Phantom had just broken the number one rule in being a vigilante (or well maybe the number three rule, behind no killing and no maiming). He… wasn't sure what to think of it.

He took a bite of his sandwich instead. "Tommy."

Wilbur continued staring at him, a question in his eyes.

"That's my name bitch," he said between mouthfuls. "I'm not going to let you steal the spot light with a name reveal. Besides," and he shrugged, trying to shake off the seed of anxiety that had begun to grow in him. "only fair, innit?"

Wilbur snorted before extending his hand. "Suppose so. Well, nice to meet you Tommy."

Tommy rolled his eyes but shook the hand anyway. "You're such a theatre kid."

He made a noise of protest. "Am not!"

Tommy snorted. "You are the definition of a theatre kid Ph-Wilbur. You'd think you were a villain with your long ass monologues."

Wilbur slapped him on the arm gently. "You are ridiculous. I do not monologue."

"Uh-huh. Sure, Wilbur. Didn't you literally go on for five minutes yesterday about how much smarter you are than Jester after you managed to knock him on his ass."

"I- It wasn't a monologue-"

"Oh, what was it then?"

"It was simply an astute observation."

Tommy gave him a dead pan look. "An observation that lasted five minutes."

Wilbur reached up and tussled his hair. "Shut up gremlin. I won't stand for this slander."

"It's not slander if it's the truth," Tommy said cheekily, leaning into the touch of his hair.

Wilbur only sighed and continued to run his fingers through Tommy's hair. They sat in comfortable silence for awhile after that, watching the occasional car drive by. Soon it turned to five am and Tommy stood up, despite wanting nothing more than to stay there in that moment forever.

Wilbur made a discontent noise and tried to pull Tommy back beside him but Tommy shrugged him off lightly. "I have school in a few hours prick. I gotta go back home before me parents catch me."

Wilbur pouted. "Five more minutes?"

"Sorry Big P, no can do tonight."

Wilbur sighed before standing up and stretching his limbs, wincing as his muscles popped. "At least let me walk you home."

Tommy waved him off. "I'll be fine, big man. Promise."

"Promise?"

Tommy nodded, smiling reassuringly. "I promise."

Wilbur relented, ruffling his hair one last time before he stood back, smiling fondly as he watched him wander off.

Tommy looked up at him, tears threatening to fall for him as well. He struggled to find the words explaining how he was feeling at the moment. He decided to hug him instead, burying his face into Wilbur's chest.

Wilbur hugged him back and they stayed there for a few moments, just holding each other.

“Then I’ll get a spray bottle from Phil and spray you with it. Teach you some manners.”

“You wouldn’t,” smiled Tommy, sweet with saccharine. 

“Oh, I would.”

And that was how the two of them found themselves in a spray bottle fight just a few moments later. Phil watched from the sidelines amusedly, simply telling them to not trash the place or they’d have to stay and clean up.

In the end, they both ended up sitting on the floor together, completely soaked, though Tommy would say that he won, thank you very much.

Thump.

Tommy untensed his body. That hadn't hurt nearly as much as he had expected.

He opened his eyes to a number of garbage bags. Well, he wrinkled his nose, that explained the smell.

Honestly, it wasn't that uncomfortable. Tommy thought he could sleep in here. He leaned back and shifted into a more comfortable position. Yeah, he could totally sleep in here. Maybe he would. His body ached like hell and he really didn't feel like moving. Sleeping here sounded like a good idea. He could deal with garbage smell. He'd explain to Tubbo in the morning. It'd be fine.

It was not fine.

Tommy awoke to a bag being flung on top of him. He gagged and dodged out of the way of more bags that were being dumped in.

"Hey!!"

Whoever had thrown away the garbage, evidently had not heard him because he was soon thrust in darkness with a loud slam.

He groaned. Okay, so maybe sleeping in a dumpster wasn't his brightest idea. In his defense, it was 4 am. Nobody makes smart decisions at 4 am.

After another few minutes of contemplating his life, he sat up and pushed the lid of the dumpster open. Or at least, he tried to.

"What the fuck," he muttered under his breath.

He tried again, putting more effort into it. It opened slightly, but stopped after an inch or two. Tommy peered through the crack to see chains. Who the fuck locked their dumpster??

"That is not nice of you to say."

"You slept in a dumpster."

"I, okay fair point but still--"

Sorry that my posts have been a little slow lately. I just haven’t really been on Tumblr and my phone is acting really weird and it’s a new phone some letters on the keyboard are not working so it just makes my job a lot harder which sucks

He would definitely take you out to fancy restaurants and he would buy (steal) you designer, clothes, and bags

He is definitely big on cuddling so that is a major option

If he sees that you are getting anxious, he will take you in a different room to calm down

He will definitely take notes of some methods that calm you down

I don’t really know what’s going on with my phone. I have the iPhone 12 so I don’t have a home button but sometimes when I touch the screen because on the iPhone 12, there’s like something built in the screen that functions as the button and sometimes that does weird things as well I don’t really know what’s going on but I didn’t do anything to the phone. I didn’t drop it and I just got the phone and I know that nothing is wrong with it like I did not get scammed or anything like that

And not having staff that don’t listen. Like we can’t steal ideas that come from Pokefarm exclusively so what are some cool ideas you guys have that could be implemented into a new clicker site?

Real talk, for myself I wouldn't even know where to begin. I like the interface of PFQ so much because it's easy to just get on and play and get lost in it for awhile if that makes sense (as opposed to PH which to me is both brand but also overwhelming? I think it's too small plus too much text maybe where I'm used to PFQ being more visual).

First Steps

Here's something one of the juniors asked me:

"I really like computers, but I suck at them! How can I get better? I'd also like to make a job out of it, like you!"

You've got two avenues. One is standard and bland and safe, and the other involves you discovering the sweet, sweet scent of burnt-out power supply units or the joys of stripping motherboard stand-offs. Among other things.

But first - Long Post is Long. Clicky the thingy below to get A FUCKTON OF FUNBUCKS FOR PHREE!

So. You can either:

wait for the next Community College enrollment window for an institution that's within travel distance of your residence or job, and check to see if they've got either Computer Science 101 or Technical Support. Pay the expected fees, wait for your start date, and realize you're probably months ahead of the curve even if all you know is how to open or close your PC. It's all peaks and valleys from here, from Assembling everything from scratch (Scary but fun!) to Realizing that you can acheive near-godlike power over your rig or nearly anyone else's using batch files saved on a pendrive (quick and easy - a snoozefest). You'll realize that two-thirds of your average Helpdesk stuff amounts to what I nominally go through, which involves reminding Walt that he shouldn't plug his mouse's receiver dongle in one of the rear ports... The one remaining third comes waaaay late in your career track, and involves turning Eldritch glyphs into room-spanning lengths of Cat5 Ethernet spaghetti. You'll realize you need a stepladder and ibuprofen more than you need to worry about crosstalk or potentially accidentally engineering a line patch on the same rack.

look on eBay for used 1U enclosures (as in One Unit of server-grade computing) and a workable side rack, mount it somewhere where you won't mind the thing screaming at you for all eternity, and then start working with a system you've intentionally built to destroy and rebuild as you see fit. That's what's colloquially known as a Home lab, and it's the best starting base you could ever want. In a pinch, you can also sub that 1U for an old and dinky laptop you're not attached to anymore. Do everything to it. Upgrade its memory, learn how to replace old mechanical drives with SSD or NVME drives, get used to stripping screws, destroy it, drop it off at a recycling centre and then BUY ANOTHER ONE ON EBAY, AGAIN FOR THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF DESTROYING IT.

Option 2 is long, kludgey and much, much more fun. You'll run into every bottleneck a Helpdesk worker will encounter, and you'll be both your own worst client and your own trustworthy boss who gradually adds to your responsibilities. It also involves watching vids from creators like NetworkChuck or Lexikitty on your off-time and introduces you to everything you could ever want or need in order to sandbox a new operating system with the prospect of - you guessed it - ripping it to shreds.

The one catch is that Option 2 can be dangerous if you're too enthusiastic. So, considering this, some formal basics are needed:

always wear an ESD strap or keep one nearby

wear Nitrile gloves if you can't keep your fingernails or fingers consistently dust or oil-free. Your skin's PH balance will eventually thank you

steal guitar picks from music stores, most of 'em give them out like Spicy Tortilla Chips you Aren't Supposed to Eat. As to why, it's because picks are cheap and somewhat reliable plastic spudgers and pry-tools. Wiped-out credit or rewards cards can also work in a pinch, but I wouldn't recommend making a habit out of it.

If you're working on a system, keep it plugged in even if you've flicked the PSU's rear switch off. The ground pin will save your hardware.

The only liquid a computer can tolerate is isopropyl alcohol. It is non-conductive and will be perfect at lifting fingerprints or smears off of metallic elements. Do not use anything stronger, acetone turns evil when paired with PBT plastics such as those you find in keycaps or even Chicklet keyboards like a MacBook's.

If you own a laptop and the palmrests start to lightly bulge - turn off your lappy, unplug it, carefully leave it in an open and well-ventilated area for several minutes so the power supply's capacitors discharge safely over time, and then take it out to a recycling centre. Your onboard battery has turned into what is informally known as a Spicy Pillow of Death, and it should be treated with the utmost care. Most laptops can operate while tethered to their external power source and while having no battery of their own, so use this time to recover your files. If you're lucky, you can contact your manufacturer's Support service and ask for a replacement cell.

Why do batteries do this? I don't know, Jim, I'm a systems engineer and a weekend programmer, not a chemist! What I do understand is that the two opposing components of a typical cell (the alkaline and the base) are typically kept well separated by walls in-built into the cell, but that this membrane can sometimes degrade. A reaction then follows, which eventually turns to a very real fire courtesy of the charge being passed on inside it.

Complement all of this ad-hoc nonsense with a few serious CompTIA certifications - Microsoft and Google both offer online classes - and you'll be swinging for the fences in, oh, two to three years. You'll have a sucky starting salary but your skills will forever be in demand.

Also remember that the best Home Lab imaginable is life itself. A relative bricks their machine? Try and flex your muscles by attempting to repair it from scratch, or by reformatting the hard drive! Did someone give you a long-term loan for a machine that needs fixing but that won't be needed for several months? Keep their hard drive aside and toss Linux or Proxmox onto a new one, so you can either pick up server-side console commands or Hypervisor tools!

Mostly - have fun. Just don't visit r/hardwaregore too often, you'll eventually start having nightmares.
