The Zombie Song by Stephanie Mabey did so much for us as a society but also me specifically. every word of it is stellar, an absolute banger from start to finish. i actually first heard it back in 2017 in a Hamilton animatic and then a Votron one before finding the original music video which was equally awesome. we need more zombie songs. i need more zombie songs. someone please point me in the direction of more songs like this.

Interestingly, the First Kill theme makes an important swap in the next line. Mabey sings over the illustrated credits, “You’d be the only one alive that I could not resist,” out of recognition for Cal and Juliette’s queer love story. In the original track, she sings “only man.”

And all of your friends, they'd want to kill us but only because they'd be jealous that our love is deeper than Edward and Bella's.

Stephanie Mabey's The Zombie Song was first released in 2009 (this is the 2011 lyric video). In 2022 this became the theme song of the Netflix show First Kill, with one slight alteration ("You'd be the only one that I could not resist").

“It’s time to go to bed. It’s five in the morning. And then something just said type in the word zombie, just for fun,” [First Kill showrunner] Henderson tells Tudum. “‘The Zombie Song’ came up and I’m, like, ‘Well, this should be interesting.’ I listened to it, and I’m like, ‘Oh, we will be using this song!’”

Fun fact: in the intro to the 2009 accoustic video, Mabey opens with "because vampires are getting WAY too much love these days".

Songfic: In sickness and In health

This is old, and therefore not as good as the stuff I write now, at least from my perspective, but I hope it'll still be an interesting read.

A butcher’s knife swung towards my neck, I ducked just in time, but my sluggish movements allowed the blade to cut some hair from my already balding head.

Fuck.

They swung again swearing about an abnormal, I had trouble before (my vision isn’t what it used to be), but I now recognised the voice, it was Cole. Just my luck-

I dodge again and Cole keeps swinging his butcher’s knife in hopes of what? Decapitating me? As if I’d let him.

Cole was a guy I met through Jack, the only one who hasn’t tried to kill me in this shit show, he was born here, in America- and has skin that reminds me of dark chocolate- a fitting description considering his bitter personality.

I stumble back when trying to duck under the blade again, this might be the end of me- I don’t even have enough muscle to outrun him.

“Cole!” A voice shouted from behind me, it was Jack! I’m saved. A smile erupted on my face, I saw Jack’s eyes hover over me and something akin to an apology flashed on his face. He stepped in front of me blocking Cole’s way. “Stop it! It’s still her!” He shouted, desperate for Cole to agree.

“Just look at her- she can’t even speak! At this point she’s just skin and bones! You have the nerve to say that that is still her? You’re delusional! Open your eyes!” Cole screamed back, in anger- his eyes shook with an emotion I couldn’t name in the moment.

Jack’s heartbeat seemed to quicken and he used his arms to further block Cole’s view of me, and I scrambled across the ground to hide behind him, hoping I’d get away with my life.

“How DARE you!???” Jack screamed- it seemed it is now a contest on who screams the loudest.

I sigh and saliva drools out of my mouth. Ugh- stupid body. “You say it like she’s so different now, she never had muscles to begin with, that why she ended up like this!”

“HA!! Take a good look at her, she can’t see, can’t speak and doesn’t even have the energy NOR the muscles to get up, she’ll only slow us down- get us killed worst scenario.” Cole’s voice shook as they argued, I’m sick of this- I think as I get up and turn towards where Cole is, still hiding safely behind Jack’s back, I move my face to the crook of his neck and rest it there. The both of them tense.

“Dude- please, leave her and let’s go.” His voice sounded almost like a whisper, a giant contrast to the earlier screaming. It was as if he was scared of me… I’ll show him, just how dangerous I can be.

“Look, she’s just resting, she’s not gonna do anything-“ Jack said with a slight smile on his face. From my point of view I could see Cole was slightly shaking, and for a good reason. I smiled at him slyly, and with no warning I moved my mouth closer to his neck, and bit.

Cole looked terrified and Jack froze in my hold, removing myself from his neck I made sure to rip off enough skin for blood to start slightly flowing, not enough to kill him immediately though, that would be a waste.

The look I could now identify as fear washed over Cole’s face and I smiled, my rotten skin, and yellow teeth with pieces of flesh in between showing fully.
