Olivia Pope Appreciation Post!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Olivia Carolyn Pope!
She not only worked at the White House, and created her own form, but she put presidents in office. She doesn’t just fix problems, she fixes people.
She seems to have been mentored by both Cyrus and Verna which after her vast education, molded her into who she is today.
Throughout the seasons we see Olivia go through hell in back not only for her clients, those she loves, but also for herself. She will do whatever is necessary and her gut is never wrong so with those two pieces together she dominates Washington D.C.
Through the seasons we do see Olivia I’m relationships, even though she says in season one she can never have normal.. the other major factor being “All Roads Lead Back To Fitz”
Edison Davis: off screen the two have a past relationship where they lived together in Georgetown and Edison even proposed. However it ended, and years later they begin to reconnect- but Olivia can’t open up to him, especially not about the past relationship she had that’s haunting her (Aka Fitz). Even with Olivia being an emotional stonewall Edison proposes again, and Olivia says No. this second proposal shows Olivia that she wants a difficult, painful love rather than an easy and normal one.
Fitz Grant: Fitz needed help with his election campaign while on the trail and Cyrus having met Olivia at law school, knew just the person to bring in. They very quickly and easily developed feelings for each other, and as much as they wanted to be together Olivia knew that an affair would be political suicide for Fitz. He was persistent though, and after being elected he told her that he loved her. Even after Olivia left the White House due to Mellie knowing about her and Fitz, there love ans tension never stopped. They didn’t become official and public until much later after Fitz divorced Mellie. However things weren’t perfect, when Fitz proposed she at first said no - then yes. Then later she gave back the ring. Fitz did however forgive Olivia and move her into the White House, however once again not so long after this - Olivia feels trapped and like she doesn’t want the life she’s living. So she leaves Fitz and the White House. From there the relationship went back to being an off again on again thing for awhile. When Fitz moves back to D.C. to help Olivia after his presidency is over, and she has left the White House which is now in the hands of Millie. It’s left open as to if they get back together officially or what happens. But in my mind they do in fact get back together and though there life would never be “normal”, Olivia learns that the difficult and painful romance she thought she deserved was also a soft and sweet - safe place.
Jake Ballard: The two met a few months after the death of Verna and the sparks ignited fast. From there it was an on and off again thing. The relationship is complicated in many ways in true Olivia fashion but a major one being that Olivia is often seen going back and forth between Jake and Fitz. Jake is shown to know Olivia more than she knows herself, to know her darkness and not shy away. She is very open and vulnerable with him. Once Fitz has been re-elected Jake and Olivia go to an island for two months and come back boyfriend and girlfriend and stay that way until something catastrophic happens in Olivia’s life. When it’s over she doesn’t want to see him or Fitz as she tries to think of them as her past while she tried to move forward. Awhile later Jake tells her about how he’s in love with her but that if she loves Fitz, she should be with him. She does just that but after her breakup, her and Jake rekindle, though everything seems to be just physical until Jake gets engaged. However the engagement is just a cover and he tells Olivia as much. Jake asks if Olivia wants to be with him, and she nods and kisses him. However Olivia receives a threat that Jake must marry Vanessa or he would be killed.
Throughout the show there were a few other small romances but overall those above were the big three.
Trivia
- She paces circles when she is troubled by something that she considers a real problem, they become perfect circles if she is really worried
- In highschool she was on the swim team
- She has one rule for all clients: “Do not lie. They lie, all bets are off.”
- She knows 18 languages, including Spanish, Farsi, Russian, Swahili, Cantonese, and Urdu
- The character of Olivia Pope is inspired by the real life crisis management consultant: Judy Smith
- The final scene in the Final shows a portrait of Olivia Pope in the second floor of the National Portrait Gallery which is only reserved for portraits of presidents of the United States of America. This leads us to believe that sometime after Mellie, Olivia became president.

In my quest to get more people to watch this episode of Marple ("The Secret of Chimneys," season 5 episode 2 if you're interested), I may have inadvertently pushed people to torrent an available copy.
Which is a horrible crime! Not because it's "theft" or whatever, fuck that, this is a 15-year-old show and Agatha's long dead — but because in the torrented version most of this scene is cut, and it's the scene which first made me pause, frown at the TV screen, mutter "wait what" and rewind it to make sure that it's as outrageously flirty as it seemed the first time.
Spoilers: it is.

Life Span
As though a drop plummeting from the tap, which can neither alter its trajectory nor stop its fluent descent, were to infer and thereby devise from one half-open bathroom door's spied horrors and side-angled awes ever more ornate cosmic laws— as though, in just that single milliliter's millisecond, in that one-room schoolhouse chockablock with cheap talk, tête-à-têtes, oratorios, and complex silences, it could compose from conjures and conjecture a concrete and complete theory of human architecture—

My favorite Dormammu costume:
Tumblr media
Ultimatum (2008) #4.
Writer - Jeph Loeb.
Artist - David Finch.
▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Yep, this is my favorite costume and it's being worn by the "worst" version of Dormammu in the Multiverse. Look, I know the Ultimate Universe got worse over time and they screwed up a lot of stuff, but man, Dormammu (and Doctor Strange's Mystical Universe) was one of the most wasted and poorly written things in this goddamn universe. I won't talk so much about the character itself now, because I can talk about that in another post.
As for the suit, the suit is amazing to me because it's a more "modernized" version of the classic Dormammu suit on Earth-616. However, I also love the colors of this costume, I think the purple mixed with the gold/yellow color goes well together and made the costume look more beautiful.
I also like the amulet that Dormammu has around his neck, it makes me imagine what a dark version of the Eye of Agamotto could look like in Dormammu's hands. The classic gloves are still good and the "belt" on the character looks more like a sash in this version.
The only thing I find confusing is that at no point do you see Dormammu's boots in the comics. Of course, it could be because of the "Plot Twist" it has on him, but even so, I wanted to know what the character's boots look like in this universe. I also like the character's face, because most of the time he is smiling in a macabre way and I find that very scary in the character. I also like the "black lines" he has around his head (to this day I don't know the correct name for it, but I like to call it "Crown").
Well, that's why this suit is my favorite and I'm sad to see it being worn by one of the worst alternate versions of the character (and in one of the worst Marvel stories in comics).

Guys I Might Have Three Nickels
I've been watching "Agatha Christie's Marple" for the past few days and it's pretty good! Marple adaptations all tend to have a better caliber of actors than a lot of bog-standard mystery shows (looking at you, "Madame Blanc"), and while Joan Hickson's Marple is right up there with David Suchet's Poirot and Jeremy Brett's Holmes as "literally can never be beaten, these are the best anyone's done it," both Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie do a fantastic job as Miss Marple.
Then I got to "The Secret of Chimneys," Season 5 episode 2
and guys
Guys
So there's a murder of a viscount, like there is, and this detective Finch rolls up and immediately spots Miss Marple (in her NIGHTIE! standing at the window like some kind of hussy, honestly Jane) and doffs his cap to her with that little smile that makes you go, "huh."
Tumblr media
At this point I've watched a couple dozen Miss Marple episodes where she goes through detectives like wildfire and this guy's supposed to be a "*guru*" so I'm expecting some battle of the egos or something and like, Stephen Dillane is great! But bleh, I might have to skip this one.
Then my dude asks Miss Marple to SHOW HIM THE BODY, with a pleased little smile at her as she goes "uhhhhhhhh but my knitting?" (He even does that thing where you use someone's honorific and wait for them to give you their name, and that's when I was like "ohhh this bitch knows exactly who she is.") What follows is what I can only describe as a meet-cute in the secret passageway where the viscount was shot (and in fact the body is STILL THERE) and where Miss Marple literally asks the police equivalent of "is there a Mrs Finch" and he looks at her like this:
Tumblr media
At which point I'm like "ohhh my dude not only knows who she is, he deliberately came here without a sergeant so he could draft her," and sure enough he just starts...handing her pieces of evidence like "hey babe can you decipher this note for me thanks love you" while Miss Marple is like, "this approval and camaraderie coming from a cop... not sure if want."
Next is a series of romantic strolls through the gardens while they discuss murder, during which Finch reveals his undying love I mean his research into Miss Marple and the "dozen case files" of her previous exploits that he's collected like some deranged fanboy. Miss Marple responds to this by BLUSHING LIKE A SCHOOLGIRL and stammering about how pish tosh it's nothing really, and I couldn't find a gif of it but he's staring at her like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah I bet u r tempted
He also makes a half-hearted attempt at negging her "amateur sleuth" status, only to then immediately assure her that he makes like, so much money being a big fancy detective and can keep her in all the yarn and garden seed she could ever desire.
There's also a late-night tryst at the compost pile right after Finch has been (mildly) poisoned and Miss Marple is like "men are so weak" as she roots through the garbage for clues.
Tumblr media
Not how he wanted their first date to go D:
The next morning there's another murder which: bummer, but also allows the two of them to read love letters together and for Finch to give Miss Marple the following look as she explains how secret assignations among lovers can "quicken the ardor":
Tumblr media
Miss Marple then goes onto solve the murders and btw hands over the priceless diamond that's been literally missing for two literal decades that she found in her spare time. The entire scene features Finch looking at her like this:
Tumblr media
After the dust settles, Finch and Miss Marple have a lovely moment where he calls himself "another one of your casualties," then super casually mentions that he's probably going to have to go on assignment to use the diamond in a daring international espionage case and I can't decide if he's asking Miss Marple to go with him or simply trying to show her that he is cool and smart and would make an excellent wife, but either way the episode ends with her turning him down and Jane, we need to talk about your priorities.
Tumblr media
Anyway I've already written 2K about the subsequent 10-year epistolary romance these two have following this episode because I make poor choices.

Impromptu for Arthur Sze
Dragonflies inscribe invisible hieroglyphics on the pink-and-purple dusklight parchment of sky; behind them, miles away, hundreds of feet higher, a helicopter blinks one red light, bears down on some distant troubled sector. I have finished my three-fennel tea; I have read some very fine lines. I think of palm tree sap spattered against my windowpane in pale indecipherable patterns; I think of the blood spatter patterns interpreted to convict a man of killings he did not commit. Always I live torn between believing the final digit of pi might yet unlock an encrypted cosmic code and believing the Jesus-faces found in bruises are mere pareidolia, precious imputations. A squirrel bounds from a palm frond, all bustle, chitter, bottlebrush tail; untraceable night birds swiftly revise the sky; later, I will use mineral spirits to remove the sap mapping nothing on my panes; elsewhere, a helicopter lands and, amid the man-made gusts of its rotating blades, someone important steps out in a black suit and—self-reflexively, unselfconsciously—smooths down the wind- rucked thighs of his thousand—dollar slacks.
