#Repost @sweetgrass.gypsy with @get_repost ・・・ In honor of Native American Heritage Month, MMIW Monday, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we walked for our Missing and Murdered Indigenous sisters across campus today. We wear red to call back our sisters spirits.  Red is known to be the only color spirits see. It is hoped that by wearing red, we can call back the missing spirits of our women and children so we can lay them to rest. 5,172 known Native American women are known to be missing from our homelands. Only 116 cases as of 2016 have been in the database under the United States Department of Justice. THIS IS INJUSTICE. #nomoremissingsisters #MMIW #MMIWG #NoMoreStolenSisters #sayhername #InternationalDayForTheEliminationOfViolenceAgainstWomen #nativeamericanheritagemonth #mmiwg #native #navajo #indigenous #mexican #mexicana #indigenousAF #strongresilientindigenous #indigenouswomen #sisters #domesticviolenceawareness #therapist #therapistlife #MentalHealth https://www.instagram.com/p/B5T6zRHAUt8/?igshid=tl74p503bxdm

Indigenous Thanksgiving
My mother's parents: a Caucasian woman, an indigenous man of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. My grandfather is no longer alive, and although both me and my mother both favor him in our appearances, I have little ties holding myself to his culture. My grandfather I know, held no strong views on Thanksgiving. He ate food with my grandmother's family and never talked about racism or its contributing factors and effects. At Thanksgiving, because my grandfather has no close, or truly known family nearby, I eat with my grandmother's family. When I talk about indigenous rights, racism, and the genocide that followed the first Thanksgiving, my whole white, white family attempts to shut me up with 10,000 excuses. The top one: your grandfather never cared, so neither should you. I want to say so much to this. I want to tell them that's not true, and even if it was that it doesn't dictate anything my opinions and views. I want to tell them about internalized racism. I want to tell them about how just because it is not spoken does not mean it doesn't exist, I want them to understand that even though he never complained, he never condoned. But I can't, because he died when I was so young, barely 11, and they could simply dismiss me saying I never knew him anyway. I have no one in his culture, my culture, that i am close to, and my mother and I have a rather strained relationship (she personally is indifferent towards the topic, often calling herself white and completely dismissing her father as they also had strained relations). Does anyone think this way, deal with this situation? Is there anyway around this...this feeling? This empty hole, this knowledge that people, people who shared my blood, were murdered by the thousands and I am forced to celebrate it?

My Granny never cared for the rules of men, so she didn’t outright hide, but there were definitely hard times. She and my African/Chippewa Grampa Pat had bricks in their windows and hate, but NEVER ONCE WERE THY ASHAMED OF WHO.WE.ARE. . #Repost @jennifer_q85 ・・・ My Grandmother use to whisper to me that I was an Indian. It almost felt like a secret. I knew I was Mi’kmaw but she needed to remind me. Today, I’m a proud Indigenous woman that speaks loudly. Together we will continue to progress and have our real history told. Our ancestors signed treaties with future generations in mind, we must do the same. #nativewomen #indigenouswomen #indigenousidentity #strongresilientindigenous #nativeamerican #nativeculture #indigenouspride https://www.instagram.com/p/ByV7nCnFtpI/?igshid=3xnafh1iky3z

The term Two-Spirit initially emerged into contemporary vernacular in the 1990s when Indigenous people began actively resisting colonial values and processes and are working towards the reclamation of Two-Spirit identities. Indigenous LGBTT2QQIA groups rejected the Western anthropological definitions of Indigenous homosexual and transgender people and determined that the mainstream lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender identities did not include their Indigenous cultural understandings of gender and sexuality.3 Two-Spirit is a self-descriptor used by all gender and sexual variant Indigenous people in Canada and the United States that honours our ancestral past and reclaims our Indigenous identity. * * * * #twospirit #nativeart #2slgbtqiaplus #genderidentity #genderexpression #tomboy #androgynous #lesbian #genderfluid #reclaimyourpower #strongresilientindigenous #lgbtqia #lgbtqia2s #indigenous #indigenousart #haudenosaunee #drag #itsthelgbt #genderfluid #indigenousqueer #gendernonconforming #genderqueer #lgbtqyouth #indigiqueer #queeraf #nonbinarygender #enby (at Akwesasne Mohawk Territory) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjTL-LGLPxt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
