Aegosexual attraction for me is like: Ooh, he's pretty. Or oh, she's hot. I theoretically want to have sex with this person. ... Oh, wait. ... Actually doing it? Pushing our bodies into each other? Making out and licking each other's tongues? Yeah, no, never mind. I'm fine.

Like, I do experience attraction. It's different than just aesthetic appreciation or recognizing that someone is conventionally attractive. There's a draw toward some people. I have an interest in the concept of sexuality, in the abstract, but the thought of acting on that interest, the thought of myself in a sexual situation, the practical reality of sexuality is squicksome at best and frightening at worst.

And I'm always questioning and re-questioning myself: Am I sure I'm not just a quitter? Am I sure this isn't just because of my childhood traumas? Am I sure I'm not just a damaged brain in need of repair? Am I sure it's not just that I feel unworthy of being loved?

So it gets very confusing is what I'm saying.

Was discussing the pre-AO3 days of fandom earlier today, mostly in the context of dead archives and creators sending C&D letters to fan sites (funnnn times). And I went to look at my old fanfiction.net stories to see the kind of disclaimers I put on fic, and… I made that in 2005. 2005! It’s 19 years old! Goodness.

I mostly lurked and read in Tolkien fandom back then although I have a couple of stories from ff.net and LJ from 2004/5. I remember it being an intimidating fandom, or it felt like it to me; I remember we were all very worked up over Mary Sues (why? WHY did we care?) and I remember endless discussions about whether slash should be rated higher than het on ff.net’s new rating system (sigh); I remember the citrus scale.

But I also remember it as being such fun, as being the first fandom that took something I had loved since I was a child and said “hey, you can look at it this other way too”. I remember the delight of actually getting to read what other people thought happened on the Helcaraxë. I remember some of the absolute crackfic LiveJournal RP, too. And the people I met then, and the character songlists we swapped.

I hope you’re doing okay out there, fellow early-mid 2000s fandom people! And never assume you’re out for good - I had an 18-year gap in writing Tolkien fics but the elves have pulled me back in once again :)

Did anyone else here ever play with your hands like little puppets as kids? I had a phase in elementary school where i'd play with my hands and create little characters. One i would play the most was called Rooster and the One-eyed Snake. Here are some visual examples:

The exact scenarios weren't very different from a looney tunes or tom & jerry sketch, the rooster outsmarts the snake and lives to see another day.

But i remember my mom telling me one day, when we were invited to a piano recital for my younger sister, to "stop embarrassing" her with my hand puppets. It was the first time i felt self conscious about it, when it had just been something i did to entertain myself and didnt even think about how i must have looked to other people. I stopped doing it not long after and by the time i was a teenager i would think "ugh i cant believe i use to do that as a kid i was so embarrassing". And as an adult now, with a better understanding of myself, that was a shame. I feel like there was some creativity trying to spark there as a kid that ended up stamped out before it could really light up.

💓Favorite Three Ships- Not sure if this is meant to be others sims, or our sims, or just in general... So I'm going to pick one of each to cover my bases.

Vlad and Ji Ho from @satureja13. They're participating in the global strike for Palestine right now but post regularly about their boys and the stuff they get up to. A lot of cute ships here but Vlad and Ji Ho are my favourite (sorry Malfoy)

My sims... it changes quite often but it's generally from the YA pool as I've played through their lives, unlike my adult sims who started off married and happy. Reece and Samir are my favourite couple today as I had a blast playing them.

In general from the tv show Once Upon a Time, Belle and Rumpelstiltskin. Don't get me wrong, I love Emma and Killian, but Belle and Rumpel pull at my heartstrings more.

Childhood Joy: Sailor Moon Edition

In the midst of re-examining my life, I've dug up a bunch of old photographs and I thought it might be fun to share some of these.

I forget the year, but judging by the wrapping paper I'll assume this was a Valentine's Day gift from my mom. And of course I loved to make goofy faces for the camera.

I think this was later that same day. The candy heart suggests that it probably was.

Not sure what occasion this was, but I was very pleased with these curtains.

This was one Christmas or another when I got Mercury and Jupiter.

Me with some fanart I drew. Try not to get jealous of my artistic talent.

Guess which bunk was mine, lol. (We did have matching bedspreads at one point.) I shared a couple of pictures of this ages ago on this blog.

I loved this comforter. It's one of the things my grandmother made disappear when I made the mistake of leaving it at her house. Nearly 30 years later and I'm still kinda salty about it.

This was my 9th Birthday. My mom made me a Sailor Moon cake.

And she drew this super cool picture.

I got a lunch box too.

A Lego fanwork next to a shampoo bottle. Presumably I had used the bottle as a reference to try and approximate her design with the Lego bricks. I think my mom helped me. I shared another image of Lego Moon a while back.

She was accompanied by Lego Mars. You can also see the lunchbox behind them and the curtains from earlier on the right.

Not sure when this was, but there's Venus. I know I had Mars and Princess Serenity too, along with various other toys and VHS tapes, but I haven't found any photos of when I received them.

And there's a season 2 poster I had on my wall.

These memories still make me smile. Sailor Moon was really important to little me. I'm sure I've talked before on this blog about some of the ways the show influenced me. I can also remember playing as Sailor Moon with my Crescent Moon Wand and Crystal Brooch. I think I remember accidentally leaving the Crystal Brooch outside one time and going out to find it the next morning after it had been rained on. I can remember brushing the hair of my dolls. For some reason I was determined to un-twintail Usagi's hair. I can remember doing several drawings of the characters.

I think I'd stay in the warmth of those memories forever if I could.
