Hi thankyou for writing very informative analysis on GK!my first encounter with your posts is looking up their heights and then the army rankings in order of our beloved characters. While I try to avoid spoilers, I have already heard from a friend that the manga ending is rushed..
if you are following the anime to s4 is Asirpa's feeling for sugimoto as obvious in the anime compared to the manga? [I'm so far an anime only and will start s3 soon. I also am reading the manga up to Sapporo hotel arc]
Do you know how it's profitable for publishers to rush their artists when obviously it's fans are still willing to buy more of their comics.. like extend their contracts perhaps.. I felt quite sad for how some animes turned out and would hate for GK to go that route
Lol is it possible for Noda to draw Canon extras on his blog of GK despite the end of the manga? Or is he also present in the anime direction? I heard that if he was given more chapters to write, he would be able to elaborate on the character's choices in the ending so hopefully hes got a say in the anime.
Lastly, do you think S5 is the season finale based on the pace? I love to bingewatch shows.
Thankyou
Welcome in the GK world!
If possible the anime (especially in the first 2 series) made Asirpa's feelings for Sugimoto even more obvious than they were in the manga, people who were strongly against the idea of an eventual Sugi/Ripa endgame complained about it more than once.
For start it cut completely Umeko's role (in the manga Umeko was declared in the early chapters as the woman Sugimoto loved) and started giving Sugimoto and Asirpa more space, from ep 16 in which Sugimoto picks up Asirpa in his arms to take her away from Hijikata to an huge expansion of the scene in which they hid in deer skins in Ep 17 to the ending theme of the second series with Asirpa with her hand on Sugimoto's heart, to the finale itself in which Asirpa, who normally doesn't believe in dreams, dreams Sugimoto and believes it's a dream sent to her by the gods and in her dreams Sugimoto tells her the things he wanted to tell her as if they were having a mental connection, a scene that's not in the manga.
Part of the criticism though didn't steem just by people hating the Sugi/Ripa but also by how the second season cut a lot of scenes from the manga to then add this sort of scenes which weren't in the manga and seemed to promore the Sugi/Ripa agenda.
Season 3 and 4 were closer to the manga so didn't got as much criticism.
It's unknown if Noda was rushed by his editor or not. It might be he was bored or got worned out by GK. Or it might be he didn't even realize his work felt rushed, maybe he only wanted to make it fast paced and... well, it didn't quite work.
Of he just did wrong his math, he wanted to end the story at Vol 31 (due to one of the possible reading for 31 being Saichi, Sugimoto's name) but created too many sideplots he had to solve so he had to rush.
This is actually a concrete possibility as the last volumes are REALLY big because they also contain more chapters than usual when he could have instead just put in them less chapters and made one more volume.
Since GK was a successfull manga I honestly find hard to believe Noda was pressured to end it unless there was some problem I know nothing about.
Anime are a different matter as in the last years their main source of income are often the dvd so they're often kept short (12 episodes) in order to sell the dvd quickly and efficently.
I doubt Noda will have time to draw canon extras on his blog, as he's working on another manga. The most he might do is drawing extra illustrations.
Who knows, maybe extra might be drawn if he were to take part to some other GK project.
I don't really know how much involved he is in the anime I've heard he was consulted for some things but, as a mangaka, Noda is already pretty busy on his own so I don't know if he would have the time to get involved more... and I've my doubts on him wanting to expant the anime ending. It's of course not impossible but I'm not sure he would be interested in it.
Currently the anime covers till half of Vol 25. This would mean 6 volumes and a half are missing... but we could also say 7 volumes since as I said the last volumes are bigger than the others.
The remaining arcs are losely 3, the Hokkaido one, the Fort Goryokaku one and the train ride one.
If the anime has 12 episodes, it means 4 episodes for each arc, if they increase the episode number (season 4 has 13 episodes so 12 isn't a given) and let's say go at 15, it would make 5 episodes for each arc.
It's possible to fit everything in, though if we fit everything well or in a rushed manner is up to the authors. Brain's base to me looked better than Geno studio so they could make it... because splitting those 3 arcs in 2 series seems too long to me.
Of course an even better solution could be put 2 arcs in the anime and the final arc in a movie... but I think they're more likely to keep everything in one anime.
Due to Geno Studio's anime poor quality as far as I know the GK anime isn't super popular and it would be hard for a movie to attrack enough audience so it's likely the next series is the final one.
Still, that's just me and I might be wrong so take this with a grain of salt.
Thank you for your ask!

Clowning in your ask box again during my break at work cuz I’m rereading your fics and headcanons and thinking specifically about trans savage bc dathomirians have extreme sexual dimorphism in their species so the males and females look so different from each other and bc of that there’s literally so much to explore like it would be so hard for their species to explore gender bc of that plus the extreme matriarchal culture like I’m just thinking so much about how the gender spectrum works in dathomirian culture ya know
first of all AHHHH IM SO HAPPY YOU SO LIKE MY AU X3
second of all, strap in, this is gonna be a long post (and kinda sad)
CW: TRANSPHOBIA/QUEERPHOBIA MENTIONS
Ok so usually when one thinks Zabreaks, they often think of Dathomir, and when they think of Dathomir, they often think of how different the Nightsisters and the Nightbrothers look
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, there are women in the species who look similar to the men. For example:
Tumblr media
Sugi (my beloved <3) is from Iridonia, a planet where some of the Zabraks from Dathomir had left the planet to live there (i don't blame them tbh). Another example is her niece, Jas Emari.
Tumblr media
I guess I'm using this (and the Legends idea that the the fallen jedi Allya had teamed up with the Nightsisters to take over Dathomir and thus eliminate and enslave the existing cultures, so i kinda see them as "colonizers" tbh) as my reasoning that Savage would look the way he looks because of both transitioning and the fact that since there are women like Sugi, the gene kinda came out of hiding (im still workshopping this tho)
as for being any kind of queer in Dathomir...well...that's where my trauma projection comes in...
I think being queer in Dathomir would be a rather dangerous existence, simply because of how the Nightsisters operate things. It is shown that they essentially have reduced the Nightbrothers to means of procreation and servitude (to put it bluntly, sex slaves, yikes), so to maintain this control, I feel like the Sisters would have it so that the men did next to NOTHING without their approval. ESPECIALLY when it came to relationships other than the ones sanctioned by The Selection (don't even get me started on that mess). Because, if they find comfort in each other, thoughts might arise that they don't need the Sisters anymore, and Stars forbid such rebellion, right?
And since the men are seen as less than, it would most likely be frowned upon AT THE VERY LEAST if someone was trans FTM. For MTF, circling around to the that the gender roles are so strong (even though they are reversed in a way) unfortunately, I don't believe that the Nightsisters would "deem a Nightbrother worthy" to "take the title as a woman", they might see it as insulting or "a threat", being how low they are already treated. :(
So that being said, the only way that Savage was even allowed to live when he born was because he was the son of Talzin, and him and Feral were useful tools to keep Viscus in line after he found out that Maul was indeed his son, and that he was given away without his knowledge (that's a whole other HC i have). He was also told never to speak of his differences to anyone.
But what happens when one of the Nightsisters says they like women? Or prefers both? Or wants more than one partner?
Nothing. Save for those who are FTM, or any other way of transmasc, it's acknowledged and let be, because they're not necessarily queerphobic more than they use it as a tool to control the Nightbrothers (kind of like an, "everyone else is fine except you" mentality). It's very flippant, and the "rules" are often bent when it pertains to a Sister.
because i also HC that Ventress is like Savage (also one of the reasons they chose her to be sent away :( )
Tumblr media
(gosh im such a slut for her bounty hunter era😩)
so yeah, while i wish i could say the Sisters would be accepting, what i saw in TCW implies otherwise (at least to me)
(however, i DID learn the Nightsisters on Dathomir aren't all of the Nightsisters that exist, so maybe there can be ones who don't agree with such practices, that's also another thing i have :3)

I just read your latest Takasugi headcanon/drabble/idk what to call it and now I am curious
What IS in his shopping list👁️👄👁️
Like it got to my head and now I NEED TO KNOW
Lmao anyways u can share your headcanons on it if you actually have any specific thoughts. I'd just like to know lol
Somehow, I knew I had it coming 😂But, as always, I'm going to be serious about it and I'll give it some proper thinking!
Let me start by saying that Takasugi doesn't just go shopping whenever he pleases. For starters, he is a terrorist and a wanted man, he can't just walk in Edo Mart and be like yo, what aisle for brussels sprouts? And even if he wasn't can you imagine Takasugi just strolling through the supermarket, comparing prices and reading the additives of each product? 😂 Not gonna lie, I pity the employees, he'd just give them THE STARE. What do you mean you have no yakult? 👀 Don't get me wrong, he'd be a very respectful customer, wouldn't cause any trouble. Unless he ran into Gintoki, then he might as well bury his face in the first shelf he finds. But anyways, anyways, let's not get off topic here!
Takasugi would rarely shop by himself and most of the time, Matako or someone else would personally handle his shopping list. But on the rare occasion he goes shopping, then this is what I would imagine his list to be!
Warning: SOME OF IT MAKES ZERO SENSE OKAY but I'm getting a vibe for it, I promise
Tumblr media
his look when they are out of his beloved beverage :)))))))
Sugi's Shopping List
Yakult
it's his priority, he loves it, come on!
Yoghurt
considering how he likes yakult so much, I can see him getting behind yoghurt honestly. Even having a bit of a childish eating habit and picking those flavored small yoghurts that are meant for kids. I don't think he'd openly admit to it that's why it's something he'd purchase when going shopping on his own.
String Cheese
another childish habit I can see him having. string cheese is something he can eat on the run and basically, many of the foods I'm going to include are ones you can eat on the go. basically snacks that don't need to be prepared and can be consumed as they are.
Tofu
even if he might indulge himself in certain western delicacies, at his core, Takasugi is a traditional man. rather than actual cheese, he'd opt for tofu.
Eggs
eggs are just... eggs, you know? so many dishes include them, so yeah.
Tea leaves
but you know, not the cheap Lipton ones. he has high standards after all! rather than coffee, I see him more as a tea kinda guy buuuut
Coffee Beans
he would like to have some coffee around and I feel like he'd be good at brewing it himself, just like his tea. i can see him and bansai sitting together while drinking either, honestly.
Water
he is a human, humans drink water, what can I say? plus, i doubt he can find high quality water lying in space.
Fruits and Vegetables
now this is the harder for me to think, because i can't really tell what kind of fruits or veggies he'd prefer. i feel like he is into healthy food, considering how yakult is basically probiotics and if he could afford to have a proper meal, he'd go for it. i can see him being into berries (NOT STRAWBERRIES BECAUSE GIN which actually arent berries at all but eh), grapes, lychees, persimmons, dates, plums or perhaps the occasional apple too. i'm afraid i can't offer an exact explanation as to why i chose these specific ones but eh, it be like this sometimes. about veggies now, lotus roots, edamame, yams, cabbage, daikon, seaweed (not really a veggie but dk what to consider it here ;-;), mushrooms and beets. i wanna say eggplants too because they are purple and well... heh.
i guess something these things have in common are that they can be either eaten individually, or are widely used in japanese cuisine.
Nuts
YEAH YEAH, I CAN HEAR THE SNICKERS FROM HERE ABOUT THIS ONE. still, nuts are a great source of NUTrients. also for some reason, i can see Takasugi liking something that requires a bit of work? now this will sound weird af but i can totally imagine him spitting the shells (or seeds since i mentioned fruits) at gintoki or people who annoy him (throwback sakamoto spit translate scene). i dont know, maybe it's because he smokes, maybe it's because he uses his fingers a lot WHEN PLAYING THE SHAMISEN, DON'T GET ME WRONG, i can see him liking foods that need some work. that's what i meant. yeah? yeah.
Sweets?
i don't see him as a sweet kinda guy, not gonna lie. but, perhaps he would indulge in an occasional chocolate candy bar. perhaps a darker chocolate? if he got a craving, i'd still think he'd opt for more traditional stuff so, perhaps dorayaki or mochi would catch his eye, if the store had some premade ones.
Miso paste
absolute MUST for breakfast.
Rice
Gum?
this one is debatable. he is a smoker, he has shitty breath, gum is easy to pop in for some freshness i guess. if he needed to have a clean breath, this is the lazy way to do it.
Soy sauce
the answer to the eternal debate of ketchup vs mayo would be soy sauce for him. this is the way of the ancestors, somehow.
Noodles
another no brainer. if you ask me, he is more of a soba kinda guy though.
Meat/Fish
usually he doesn't buy such things himself. he isn't the one to cook his own meals so... plus, meat and fish take a long of time to prepare. i think of him more as a fish kinda guy, not sure why though. if he can get his hands on some fresh fish, he'll go for it.
OH AND, not exactly fish but, Mentaiko!
Onigiri
Takasugi is a bit of a sentimental fool, no denying here. onigiri is a food linked to his childhood and to Katsura. he would eat such things behind everyone's back and if anyone noticed and asked him if he wanted some, he'd deny it, claiming that he hated the taste of him. still, i feel like it's a food he'd buy without second thought, if he happened to find it in the store.
Jelly Beans
another troll-y food choice. they are tasty and can be eaten on the go. i can see him being very picky about the order he eats them in, going as far as to not eat a certain type of flavor at all!
Alcohol
man needs to drown his pain somehow. Sake, Umeshu, Nigori, Shochu, i can see him drinking each of them. usually with Bansai, he is his certified drinking buddy. sometimes Matako and Takechi join too but they get wasted! Matako gets all flustered, attaching herself to him "Shinsuke sam~AaaaaaAAAa", she is just a mess. Takechi's lolicon comments intensify and he might honestly try to annoy Matako who just gets defensive and cries harder while wiping her nose on Takasugi's sleeve... yeah....no, it's better if he just drinks with Bansai on second thought.
Hygiene Products
i feel like Takasugi is very hygienic when he can afford to be. he is someone who obviously puts thought in his appearance and so i can see shampoo and shower gels being up high in his list. funnily enough, i can see him as someone who could potentially get behind bath bombs! they are relaxing, have a certain aesthetic and hey, BUBBLES! but mainly, i feel like he is a soap bar kinda type. he prefers clean scents without bells and whistles. perhaps something that has a bit of a flowery scent? basically relaxing stuff. definitely an ylang ylang or sandalwood kinda guy (damn i'm reading too much into it). also toothbrush, toothpaste, the usual stuff. floss too. gotta wash the tobacco away.
oh and of course, he is clueless about detergents. he doesn't handle that at all, Matako takes care of his laundry somehow. he frowned upon her about it in the start, but she's managed to find a smell he likes so they are good.
Tobacco
wasn't sure if i should add that because not all regular stores have that but yeah, he needs it for his kiseru!
MAN, I spent so much time thinking about this. Not in a million years would I ever think that I'd be writing Takasugi Shinsuke's personal shopping list. But there is always a first, I guess! These are just my opinions/headcanons/guts, call them whatever you want, really. Some of these have a base I guess while others are just hunches.
Hope this wasn't too out of character, hey, I DID MY BEST! I loved this ask though, it was so particular and different from what I usually do or think about.

Hey folks! Tonight, 6pm (AZ Time) I'm gonna stream some Star Wars art! The only rule (besides be nice and respectful to each other <3): I have to draw all my other SW faves. No Cad Bane. But that means I'm also up for drawing anyone's Star Wars OCs! ;) Hope to see you then!

The Black And Blood Sun
Tumblr media
I was watching the 1970s Caligula movie last night while drawing this, and originally I was just gonna draw Motonari but I decided to draw him again surrounded by the dark cloud of sorrow and misery as in my Sengoku Basara fanon he has lived a very depressing life.
He faced being nearly killed by his mother when he was but a child, and later on he is removed from the castle he grew up in and would become known as the Beggar Prince, he faces the constant burden of being betrayed by many, his troops, Lady Sugi, and just so many. He lives in constant fear of losing his beloved Myōkyū and their children, but most of all Izumo No Okuni whom he places in control of Izumo despite her not having an same social status as him, as Okuni is a bit of a sister figure for him and not just a retainer or rather what he believes that he has the sun goddess at his side as long as Okuni is there.

Fujimura Koharu
Tumblr media
Ok this time I will explain my points about my most favorite character in KoiBoku: Koharu! At first I didn't really like her. Or you can say I felt weird by her attitude:
1. Does she really love Taka that way? Even though Taka treats her like a slave rather than a girlfriend?
2. Why does she seem to always smile and laugh unnaturally? What's behind that smile and laughter?
.
After curious, I found the fact that made Koharu attractive to me:
1. She doesn't know how to be loved properly & she just wants to do her best to be loved. She refrained to ask for love in return her efforts.
2. She doesn't want to be hated. She is actually afraid to be alone. That's why she always tries to appear cheerful no matter what she is feeling.
I started liking her for these reasons:
1. Actively pursuing, expressing, and loyal to her love
2. Hiding all hurts and painfulness with a smile & laughter.
.
After that, I became more and more curious about her. The biggest mistakes/flaws that are often mentioned by Koharu's haters:
1. Want to destroy the Nao x Izumi relationship
2. Using Eiji to achieve her goal of approaching Nao
But the haters missed that Koharu didn't have any relationship with Izumi at first. She just thought based on her experience that being close with Nao would make him change his heart. Remember she was betrayed by Taka and his closest female friend. And Eiji himself volunteered, not Koharu who approached & asked him to make Eiji as a tool.
.
After she realized that she didn't have a chance, she stopped and decided to go back to her beginning state. She regretted after knowing that his opponent (Izumi) was neither a bad nor a weak girl. Koharu was even more hurt after feeling she betrayed something called friendship & sincerity.
I became more aware and understood about her after seeing her cry and get hurt many times. She just wants to be loved properly. However, even those who claim to love her (Sugi) can't feel what she feels at all, impose his will, and has delusions that are completely wrong.
.
Her next mistakes:
1. Not being able to say directly to that creep that he was annoying, bothering her and she wanted him to stop. Koharu just didn't want to come into conflict with hating and hurting others.
2. But instead she did something terrible to Eiji who cared and wanted to help her. Koharu ran away from her real feelings by doing totally the opposite. Even though I understand the reason, these mistakes really bothered me. Because I want her to have a peaceful and happy life!
.
I hope she gets her true love: when she not only loves, but is loved. She must know that love isn't just one party. I wanted to see her smile from the bottom of her heart, even cry happily, because she felt loved. I also want her to become herself when she is with her beloved. And I haven't found anyone who fits the role but Eiji.

Golden Kamuy – 26 – Some Like it Hot ‘n’ Punchy
Tumblr media
After winning his first stenka, Sugimoto approaches Gansoku Maiharu, the tattooed ex-prisoner, outside, and they heartily shake hands in expectation of facing off in a future stenka. Gansoku, an otherwise civilized and affable man, was simply born to punch people in the fucking face. He’s lived a life of violence and likens his passion to that of a painter or dancer.
This philosophy is why Sugimoto doesn’t accept the Russian tavern owner’s demand that the Japanese fighters throw the next match so he’ll make more money. Intentionally losing won’t let them get anything out of Gansoku, whether it’s the gold or info on Asirpa, but the four of them fighting him honestly could, so Sugimoto accepts another stenka.
Tumblr media
While Sugimoto, Tanigaki, Tsukishima and Koito again dominate, defeating three of their four opponents, Gansoku is in a whole other league, and takes even Sugimoto’s best punches like a champ. This is a guy, after all, who even beat Ushiyama back at the prison in punches-only contests.
This stenka surpasses the ultra-fun madness of the first thanks to Gansoku’s participation. It’s particularly hilarious that he acts like a character in a shoujo manga, complete with sparkly eyes and playfully beating his first on Sugimoto’s back when he turns away from him. He’s having an absolute blast.
Tumblr media
Then Sugimoto throws a kick, and proceeds to beat on everyone, even his own comrades, and the brawling pours into the crowd. An old Russian guy declares “This is real stenka!” until Sugimoto takes things too far and whips out a hammer and sickle, then declares “This is not stenka!!”
Despite Koito’s hopes, this is not all part of Sugimoto’s “plan” to get everything they want; he’s simply taken too many blows to the head and has gone into Immortal Sugimoto Preservation Mode (ISPM). When in his frenzy he mentions gold, Gansoku realizes they’re after his tats and flees with all the adolescent emotion of a scorned high schooler.
Tumblr media
Tanigaki, Tsukishima and Koito pursue Gonsaku, who ends up tangling with a wolverine. The four of them seek safety in a shed, but it’s actually a banya, or Russian sauna, which is so hot everyone has to (of course) strip down. Gonsaku, no stranger to banyas, starts whipping them with a venik or white birch branch, which increases circulation and makes the air even hotter.
This is one of the rare times I knew exactly where Golden Kamuy was going with its cultural snapshot. Prior to Covid, me and my friends would semi-regularly go to a local Russian spa to sit in 160°-190° F hot saunas, jump into 40° F water to cool down, repeat that process, then eat kickass Russian food, drink Russian beer, and watch goofy Russian music videos. A Russian spa basically the best place in the world, but Gonsaku intends to sweat the others out so they’ll get eaten by the wolverine.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Cikapasi and Enonoka are able to free her lead sled dog and lure the wolverine away while escaping via dog sled. When Cikapasi falls off the sled, the wolverine pounces, but both Ryu and a still-crazed Sugimoto save him, while a still-naked Tanigaki helps him line up a shot to kill the wolverine.
That leaves Sugimoto and a steaming nude Gansoku to slug it out while the others watch. Gansoku can tell through Sugimoto’s fists that he’s carrying a great deal of anger and rage, but not directed towards him, but within. When Sugimoto says he’s useless, as images of his beloved Asirpa flash through his still-addled head, Gansoku tells him to forgive himself; he’s clearly working as hard as he humanly can.
Tumblr media
Sugimoto then delivers an almost knockout blow that pauses their duel long enough for the other (still naked) men to intervene, but then they discover they’re all walking on ice, which cracks and gives way, sending them plunging into the cold. Turns out this is just what was needed to snap Sugimoto out of his ISPM, and he’s back to normal, but now at great risk of hypothermia, along with the others.
There’s only one thing for it…everyone piles back into the banya, which after being in frigid water, must feel absolutely magical. This absurdly masculine surface scene of naked sweaty swole men is where Sugimoto reveals they were never trying to kill Gansoku—merely copy his tattoos—but that others will, and they’ll bring guns (or katanas) to his fistfight, so they strongly recommend he leave Karafuto and head west to Russia. Since it’s the birthplace of stenka, he can still live a happy life there.
Tumblr media
Gonsaku rewards Sugimoto’s peaceful offer by bringing up a name Sugi mentioned while in his violent trance: Asirpa, whom Gonsaku saw back at the tavern with Shiraishi. Specifically, he overheard Shiraishi saying that Sugimoto may not have gotten out of the prison dust-up alive, and Asirpa confidently declaring that he’s goddamn Immortal Sugimoto. She believes he is alive, and he is. It’s now just a  matter of reuniting.
With that, we’re treated not only to a heroic shot of Asirpa descending upon a massive sea lion (headshotted by Ogata but not killed due to its thick skull), but our first official Asirpa Face of the season, as she scarfs down the extremely fatty, stinky, tasty meat.
It’s one of so many images in this episode that brought me laughter and joy. When it’s letting its hair down and/or stripping off its clothes, there is no anime out there having more ludicrously infectious fun than Golden Kamuy. I just hope the good times can keep rolling.

Title: The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa (Prompt: Read a book featuring animals, either in the story or on the cover).
Rating: 4/5 Stars ⭐
Synopsis: Sometimes you have to leave behind everything you know to find the place you truly belong...
Nana the cat is on a road trip. He is not sure where he's going or why, but it means that he gets to sit in the front seat of a silver van with his beloved owner, Satoru. Side by side, they cruise around Japan through the changing seasons, visiting Satoru's old friends. He meets Yoshimine, the brusque and unsentimental farmer for whom cats are just ratters; Sugi and Chikako, the warm-hearted couple who run a pet-friendly B&B; and Kosuke, the mournful husband whose cat-loving wife has just left him. There's even a very special dog who forces Nana to reassess his disdain for the canine species.
But what is the purpose of this road trip? And why is everyone so interested in Nana? Nana does not know and Satoru won't say. But when Nana finally works it out, his small heart will break...
---
"My story will be over soon, but it's not something to be sad about. As we count up the memories of one journey, we head off on another. Remembering those who went ahead. Remembering those who will follow after. And someday we will meet those people again, out beyond the horizon."

There is one very important question that we get asked many points in our lives; are you more of a cat person, or a dog person?
Growing up, I was very firmly a dog person. I had two cats in my childhood, but I didn't get on with them at all; when I was a kid, I found them to be uncaring, cold and a little bitchy. My pet dogs, however, were my babies. I loved them heart and soul and I could visually see that they loved me. I found love from dogs to be unquestioning and unconditional and instant. Dogs' wore their hearts on their sleeves and they were easy to read, to understand. Cats kept theirs close to their chest, and I didn't click with them at all.
That is, until a stray cat straight up waltzed into my house, sat his fluffy butt down and just looked up at me as if to say "congratulations, I live here now." I never loved cats until I had my own cat and I'm pretty sure that he adopted me, not the other way around. Why is this relevant?
The whole point of this book is about the genuine and honest love between a cat and his owner. If you're a cat person, you'll love this. I picked it up based on my girlfriends recommendation and I was not disappointed.
I did have some bug-bears with this book; with it being a split narrative between past and present, I thought that some of the past chapters grew a little repetitive, I was longing for some tiny form of conflict or rebellion from our main character, Satoru as I found that he was too perfect. I also much preferred Nana's point of view to any other character, so at parts I was just waiting to get to his chapters. I found the beginning to be too simple and I had some trouble with the dialogue, but as soon as I got into the rhythm of the writing style (also the translation), I was honestly captivated.
Other than that, I found this novel to be a sucker punch of emotion. I didn't cry towards the end, but I did tear up and I had the overwhelming urge to go and hug my cat for as long as he would let me. It had beautiful imagery and scenery and I could see it so vividly in my mind as they went on their grand adventure.
This was a very honest book and I adored it. It was about more than just a road trip, it was about more than just a man with his cat. It was about love and hope and acceptance and it was so, so good. I loved that it showed the nuances and subtleties that cats have when displaying their love and just how deeply they do love. And the way that Nana thinks is honestly the way I imagine that cats do think! Cats are about patience and understanding, as a kid I had neither. This book is chock full of it, from unravelling the mystery of just why Satoru is going on this adventure, to that gorgeous epilogue that just tugged at my heartstrings and spoke to me as a cat owner, with some great interactions between humans and animals alike.
This novel will truly stay with me for a very long time.

Vodka Palace is a project designed by MARCUS BROWNE architect. Hidden in an affluent coastal suburb is ‘Vodka Palace’ a luxurious concrete cave, tempered with natural timber finishes and primed for premium culinary, audio and visual pleasure. It is the result of a very strong collaborative process between client, architect, builder, sub-consultants, sub-contractors and suppliers. Photography by Dion Robeson.

The architect was the Producer, the builder was the Director, the client wrote the script, and the sub-consultants, sub-contractors and suppliers were the invaluable technicians and artisans that pulled the vision from the ether into a 3D reality. The spirit of this project was one of its greatest joys, all worked together harmoniously to manufacturer a resolution and it is this fact in which I take the most pride. Enduring relationships have been forged and I see the end result as not my own but the combined efforts and inspiration of everyone involved.
The coolness of off-form concrete warmed by timber finishes and a neutral colour palette creates a moody mix that evokes a serene, ethereal almost Zen-like experience. The owner has noted, “My home feels like a secure and loving, masculine embrace.” (client) Augmenting this is the use of the ancient Japanese technique of charring timber known as ‘Shou Sugi Ban’ on columns to inspire minimalistic zen-like interpretation of burnt forest and also on the timber privacy screening using charred Accoya.
Externally the client wanted to feel like she was in the bush of her beloved second home the south-west region of Western Australia where she once owned and managed an iconic hotel and this was created perfectly for her by Tim Davies Landscaping with native trees and shrubs representative of the region.
The owner was drawn to other off-form concrete homes in her suburb and communally it resonates with the coastal location by reflecting the concrete kiosks and amenities typical of many local beaches, many of which are also strong almost brutalist forms. As fate would have it, I had also recently received an anthology of Tadoe Ando’s work, as an unexpected gift and thereby the course was set.
Located at the rear of the property is ‘The Caboose’, a small cabin designed to provide self-contained private accommodation for guests, overseas friends and family, as the moment requires. Purposefully it is designed to not address the main house and performs an additional function as a dark backdrop to the rear entertaining deck of the Palace to spatially define the rear courtyard and provides privacy from and obstruct view lines to adjacent rear properties thereby accenting the landscaping. Easily accessed via a secrete path along the east side, guest’s can come and go without having to enter the main dwelling and thereby minimising disturbance to its main occupant.
Situated on a narrow site with two storey structures either side close to the boundary, gaining access to natural light lent itself to the inclusion of light wells, one over the en-suite and the other over the stairwell, to siphon daylight into the middle interiors not benefiting from the north or south glazing.
Sustainable credentials include a 24 panel photovoltaic solar system connected to a Fronius Symo Hybrid Inverter to supply the household with energy and to temporarily store surplus energy from the photovoltaic system in the Fronius Solar Battery. The range of modified timbers we used has been sustainably sourced with environmentally responsible practices and/or recognised and certified foresty stewardship according to the manufacturers.
