My opinions on the Super Mario Bros. Movie
NOTE ! :
I just watched the movie yesterday and here are some of my opinions, tbh there's nothing negative in here so that should be a good sign!!
SPOILERS OBVI !!!
⭒ Chris Pratt did a great job at playing Mario, i honestly didn't expect it
⭒ I loved that they included baby Mario, Luigi, and Peach
⭒the amount of themes and music from the franchise sprinkled in throughout the movie (obvious or not) made me really happy
⭒ Princess Peach was so girlboss
⭒ The animation was amazing
⭒ When they played the DK rap for Donkey Kong's introduction I internally screamed
⭒ Bowser was so hot
⭒ Voice acting was fantastic, the cast did an outstanding job
⭒ I want to attend one of those Koopa Kingdom parties
⭒ The scene with Luigi looking back at the mansion was so sad
⭒ The way all of the toads looked at Mario made me giggle
⭒ I would willingly marry Bowser
⭒ Cranky Kong was funny
⭒ THE KART SCENE
⭒ IT WAS AMAZING
⭒ THE RAINBOW ROAD SCENE?????
⭒ It was a great movie
⭒ THEY SHOULD MAKE ANOTHER ONE
⭒ There were dinosaurs in the scene where they travel to the Kong kingdom (i think thats what it was called) but no Yoshi 😠
⭒ I love that Bowser plays piano
⭒ I love (hate) how much he loves Princess Peach (I wish that was me), he's so dedicated (it should've been me)
10/10
They should totally make a sequel ❤️‍🔥
Now who wants some unhinged Bowser x Reader smut 😇 !!!

Todays rip: 30/12/2023
The Paragoomba and the Wiggler
Season 7 Featured on: SGFR Presents: RIP²
Ripped by 601billionlazer Performed by vvslogs
youtube
Hey, look - its close to the new year, its past midnight as I'm writing this, and I'm feeling sentimental. I know I could be putting more delicacy into my choices for these last days of the year, but please allow me to be be a bit vulnerable today.
I started making these posts seven months ago. A month later, I made the full commitment into making it a full-on BLOG-blog. That is, a blog to truly let me spill my heart over, beyond just writing one or five sentences per rip, to ensure none of my feelings get left on the drawing board. It was never something I did to catch a wave of fame, or to show off on a resume: top to bottom, this blog began as a distraction from work, and has turned into a full-scale love letter for a project that has helped shape me into the person I am today. Now, with *this* project, I've found motivation and confidence: I've had the opportunity to reignite my passion for writing, satiating my lust for analysis and discussion, and most crucially providing a thank-you to a group of creators that have always felt woefully underappreciated.
What I never really expected, was to have those same wishes returned back to me.
From the ask box, to the messages, to the Rippers' Commentary reblogs, to the discussions held in the SiIvaCord and on Discord DMs themselves, its those heartfelt words, that gratitude and joy, that keeps me driven to continue this blog until I'm all wrung dry. I've long considered myself terrible at maintaining connections, yet with each message I receive it feels as if I've made a new friend, their words of support and love never leaving my mind no matter how much time passes. It still feels like I'm somewhat of a shut-in, yet I've had the ability to talk to so many more incredible people in the back half of this year alone than I have for so much of my life before.
So, with all that sappy shit said - The Paragoomba and the Wiggler goes out to one of those people. It was only a few weeks ago this month that I covered vvsvlogs' prior work on Wham! Into Dreams, and just how much her singing truly resonated with me. As soon as that post was done, I just...felt a need to know, if she'd done any more singing work for the channel, and she was kind enough to point out her contribution to RIP² that I'd somehow completely missed. A rearrangement of an immensely simple but effective Season 1 rip, The Paragooma and the Wiggler is still a mashup of a Super Mario Bros. 3 theme and an Owl City song, yet now with a far more lively, dynamic instrumental thanks to 601billionlazer's arranging, and with vocals wholly redone by vvsvlogs, as mentioned before - and, indeed, just like Wham! Into Dreams, I connected with the rip almost immediately after listening to it. There's of course also new life injected into the non-vocal half of the song through the rearrangement, new sound effects added to punctuate lyrics, an ebb and flow maintained with the instrumentation alternating between the original chiptune sound and a plucky piano. With all that said, its an incredible rip top to bottom, showing just how talented of a singer vvsvlogs is above all else - I daresay the new vocals full-on crush the originals for me.
Yet, there's a reason I wanted to put that big sentimental introduction to this post in particular. Because back when I first discovered Wham! Into Dreams years ago, I may still have been a devoted fan, but I was a wallflower althesame: barely in the SiIvaCord, barely in discussions with anyone other than the occasional YouTube comment. It's only through all of the aforementioned outcomes of running this blog, the people I've met and the messages I've received, that I finally feel truly at home with this community - that I found the courage to reach out, talk to, and send my sincerest thanks directly to these incredible creators, with at least SOMETHING to show for it. vvsvlogs is just one of a dozen or two people I've gotten to talk to through doing this blog, and it never ceases to warm my heart - both finally getting to talk to people who've indirectly pulled me out of dark times through simply doing what they love, and through knowing I've been able to make so many of them smile from the words I'm putting onto this darn page on a daily basis.
Happy new year, SiIvaGunner team. To all of you in the team reading silently without accounts to reply with, I hope you know just how much I love you.

Happy Holidays! Here's The Bowuigi Medley!
(SoundCloud Link)
I've done it! I've created a (mostly) Mario medley based entirely on Bowuigi.
Heads Up: While putting this together, I realized this medley gets a bit crunchy on mobile device speakers. I'd recommend use of headphones or a desktop or such to listen to this, if that option is available to you.
Clocking in at 6 minutes, it's not my longest medley, though I think it's the one I put the most thought into overall. There's a whole story outline in my mind, with acts and everything, that determined pretty much every detail of how this was put together. I won't be posting said 'story' here, though I'll likely be making a post of it soon (which I'll link here once I do).
There's multiple sections in here that I might end up isolating and extending into full pieces. I didn't expect Luigi's and Bowser's music to gel together as well as they did, though I guess the same could be said for the ship as a whole.
My next endeavor will probably be a winter-y themed medley of sorts. That was, as it happens, my original plan for a Christmas release, but Bowuigi took over my brain, so this ended up coming first.
I hope I've done the ship justice, and I hope you enjoy! And, once again, happy holidays! ☆
Credits and Tracklist are Below the Cut!
The Following Tracks Come from NinSheetMusic.
More specifically, the Super Mario, Paper Mario, and Mario Kart sections. Names/Links provided below for the people who made the sheet music I referenced.
Mario and Luigi's House, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door - Sebastian
Luigi's Casino, Super Mario 64 DS - Don Valentino
Bowser Battle, Super Mario Bros 3 - The Deku Trombonist
Stage Clear (Slowed), Luigi's Mansion - Nacho2420
Luigi's Story, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door - Sebastian
Luigi's Mansion, Mario Kart DS - Bloop
Angry Bowser, Paper Mario - Maelstrom

Main Theme, Luigi's Mansion - Sebastian
Princess Peach is Rescued, Super Mario World - Sekter77
The Grand Finale/In The Final, Bowser's Inside Story - Rubikium
...honestly, NinSheetMusic is a stellar site for anyone looking to learn some Nintendo songs on piano (and even some non-Nintendo games!). They've got so much covered, it's insane. That sounds like a sponsor bit but I swear it's not.
The Following Come from MuseScore.
Names of the creators of the sheet music and links to said sheet music referenced are provided below.
Masochism Tango, Tom Lehrer - frejt
Bowser's Castle, Super Mario World - mielesgamesfa
Meant To Be Yours, Heathers: The Musical - tlee524
Tale As Old As Time, Beauty and the Beast - Michel Dikovec
Ghostly Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy - XiaoMigros
Final Battle with Bowser, Super Mario Galaxy - XiaoMigros
Wedding Hall, Super Mario Odyssey - ethan0515
The Following Comes from a Very Shady PDF.
Seriously. I've linked the PDF just to give the credit where it's due, and generally the PDF itself is safe to view. However, near the top of the sheet there's a very shady link that I would not recommend clicking, as I have no clue where it actually goes if you let it load fully.
Love Story, Taylor Swift - Ludy

Submitted by @literallyjusttoa based on the end of the fic Cooler Than Me by @falconfrost: A list of piano songs I think Apollo would teach Meg and weird facts about their creators he would use to get her to practice. All written by someone with a questionable understanding of the piano.
Chopsticks (the classic): Euphemia Allen made Chopsticks when she was 16! For years it was unknown that she wrote the piece, as her brother published it under an alias. This was meant to protect Euphemia from harassment and make sure the composition was successful, as people were not interested in listening to music composed by a woman.
When the Saints go Marching In (My first piano piece :P ): It is unknown who originally wrote this piece, but it was popularized by Louis Armstrong. The man used to sign his personal letters with the phrase “Red Beans and Ricely Yours,” to show his love for the dish.
Tarantella (A nice intermediate piece): There are multiple pieces named Tarantella, but the one in question was written by Anton Diabellii, and was made specifically for educational purposes. While Diabelli always held an interest in music, he was actually a publisher, not a full time composer. He published many of Beethoven’s works.
To a Wild Rose: Edward MacDowell is considered one of the first great American composers, moving throughout the east coast of the U.S. most of his life. He enjoyed a simple life, saying a rural setting was exactly what he needed for inspiration.
Clair de Lune: Claude Debussy had an alter-ego named “Monsieur Croche” which he used to write essays about art, music, nature, and a whole host of spiritual and artistic topics.
La Boite a Bijoux (Also Claude Debussy): Debussy was well-known as a womanizer, but he had much love for his only daughter, Claude-Emma (nicknamed Chouchou). This piece, along with “Children’s Corner” was written for her
Luma/Sad Story (This is from Super Mario Galaxy, Meg had just beaten the game and wanted to play something more modern): The Super Mario Galaxy score was written by Mahito Yokota and Koji Kondo. Koji Kondo was in a cover band before working with Nintendo, and had no classical training for music before getting the job. However, he went on to be the creator of the iconic Super Mario Bros. Theme.

SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE OST
press start for piano solo
I'm really looking forward to watch the movie, actually it's not on cinema right now where I live. I couldn't wait for it, so I purchased the OST and thoroughly impressed the second track, "Press Start". I decided to share what I dictated by ear with 8-bit Mario gif animations.
composed by Brian Tyler, original theme by Koji Kondo.

The Mosley Review: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Tumblr media
There is a reason why video game developers don't license out their product or games to film studios. If the early 90's taught us anything, they haven't gotten it right at all. Back in 1993, the most guiltiest pleasure of a film was released and it caused Nintendo to never trust the film industry to adapt their legendary catalog to screen. Super Mario Bros. was absolutely an abomination of a film that didn't even try to get the world or design of the beloved game correct. What my generation got was a comedic and yet dark dystopian creature feature that even the cast hated making. I still enjoy the ridiculous and fun charm despite its massive sins committed against the property. It sparked my crush for Samantha Mathis so that was always a plus. Nintendo has taken the chance again and trusted another film studio to try and respect the source material, but did it work? Absolutely! From the opening credits to the final shot of the film, this was 100 percent a Super Mario Bros. game come to life in everyway possible. The choice to do it animated was the only way to get it right and the filmmakers nailed it. From the vast amount of classic references, Easter eggs, recreations of the original game levels of Donkey Kong and Mario Kart, I was in heaven. The universe of Mario Bros. was on complete display and handled with such respect. There are some updated story elements that alter the original stories of the games, but it didn't actually matter in this instance because the amount of fun I was having with the breakneck pace of the film. I had my reservation about certain casting choices and I was pleasantly surprised by how well the cast pulled it off.
Tumblr media
Chris Pratt takes the lead as Mario and I had my thoughts on the choice of a big name actor to play him. I wanted the voice actor that has voiced the character for 100 games and I was afraid that all I was gonna hear was Pratt. Well Chris absolutely blew my expectations out of the water and nailed the characters heart and optimistic spirit. Charlie Day was fantastic as his skiddish, faithful and sometimes hilariously tortured brother Liuigi. He seriously gets put through the ringer in this film and I sometimes felt sorry for him as he is sidelined for the majority of the film. His chemistry with Mario was truly a highlight when they were together and they had an amazing action scene together toward last portion of the film. The bathroom sequence was awesome as well with the dog.  The original voice of Mario, Charles Martinet, is in the film and I loved that he played the father of both Mario and Luigi. It was a wonderful touch for him to be the one that propels their story to earn the respect of their father. Anya Taylor-Joy was excellent as Princess Peach and I liked that they updated her character. Historically, she was the damsel in distress that Mario would always have to save and now she is more of a stronger person. It wasn't a politically overbearing choice that somehow made her the hero of the film. She was a great ally to Mario and you grow to love her by the end. Keegan-Michael Key was outstanding as Toad and nearly stole the film with all of the cute and heroic moments. He wasn't a bumbling character that was just there to sell toys and I loved that he was very creative and brave. Seth Rogen blew me away with his performance as Donkey Kong. He was as funny, arrogant and tough as Kong should be. He was so much fun to watch and the rivalry between him and Mario was so reminiscent of their original arcade game debut. Jack Black is always a delight and as King Bowser, he was hilarious and unexpectedly menacing in so many great ways. He is a villain with a big heart, but he will burn all that cross him. I loved his many musical numbers and a particular scene with a piano where he plays a well placed theme we all know to add tension. Kevin Michael Richardson was awesome as the sorcerer and right hand of Bowser, Kamek. Kevin has always been one of my favorite voice actors and I always enjoy hearing his talented and distinct voice in anything. He was awesome and great in his scenes with Bowser. Khary Payton was great as the Penguin King and even though his major scene was in the trailer, he still had more fun moments in the film to witness. Juliet Jelenic was adorable and hilariously dark humored as Lumalee. Every line that kid spoke was comedy gold and I loved every second of it.
Tumblr media
The score was brilliant and recreated all the iconic music of the franchise in epic and creative forms. Brian Tyler truly created a masterpiece of a score that had me smiling from the ear to ear as the themes that Koji Kondo created came back to life in the right moments at the right time. The underground tube theme from the first game was used perfectly to build tension in one specific moment. Even though the film has a attention span of 2 year old, the story still held even if it was a bit basic. I wasn't looking for something Oscar worthy, but what we got was serviceable and you've seen it done before. Other than that, there's really nothing bad I can say about this delightful and fun family film that will be enjoyed by adults as well. If you're a hardcore fan of the Mario universe, then you will have your mind blown. For the casuals like me that grew up with it but never continued with the franchise after Mario 64, I still found myself having so much fun and smiling at all the recreations of classic levels and references to other Nintendo classics. Do stick around to the end of the film for an end credit that'll make you smile even harder. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

THE AARONS 2023 - Best Original Song
I’ve heard some people say this is a category I should scuttle, butt how can I when I’m swamped with such memorable songs? Here is The Aaron for Best Original Song:
Tumblr media
WINNER: “Am I Dreaming” by Metro Boomin, A$AP Rocky, Roisee - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Tumblr media
It remains to be seen if the second part of the Spider-Verse sequel will stick the landing, but the story so far definitely ends on a high note. It’s one mic drop after the next as Spider-Man cuts from its amazing cliffhanger to the spectacular strings of the Metro Boomin track playing over its credits. Weaving this sample together with a revitalizing beat and verses by A$AP Rocky and Roisee, the producer gives an inspiring voice to the dimension-hopping hero’s singular perseverance. In turn, the superpowered song should easily carry audiences through the indeterminate waiting period before Spider-Man swings back into theaters.
Tumblr media
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
“I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling - Barbie
The outlandish anthem of self-love was the song of the summer and a ten out of ten in any world.
Tumblr media
“Peaches” by Jack Black - The Super Mario Bros Movie
Black’s sickly sweet piano ballad empowered Bowser to be a king of many scales.
Tumblr media
“Can’t Catch Me Now” by Olivia Rodrigo - The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Snakes certainly had no shortage of songs, but Rodrigo’s tribute to teenage scorn was its catchiest.
Tumblr media
“Still Alive” by Demi Lovato - Scream VI
The defiance in Lovato’s lyrics carved out a pop-punk theme for Scream that’s to die for.
Tumblr media
NEXT UP: THE AARONS - THE 2023 DAVID FOR BEST CHASE!

"Oh shit." You cursed, sadly forgetting that your radio was on. "What's wrong?" Your engineer asked, concern evident in his voice. It was Q1, and the echo of your radio broadcasted your words through the big speakers of the stadium.
"I'm menstruating." You groaned, feeling the cramps intensify. "I'll need to make a pit stop after Q2 for a change of tires and a water break. I finished mine." You sighed, skillfully manoeuvring the hairpin turn.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix had been cancelled, making this the last race of the seain and luckily it was your home race. "Ah, I see." Your engineer chuckled, nodding quietly to himself. "Good luck, champ."
Successfully completing Q1 and Q2, you sat in the garage while your team changed your tires. "Do you think you can make it to pole position?" Your team principal crouched beside you, asking.
"My period is not an excuse for performing poorly, sir." You replied confidently. You had discovered that the adrenaline and concentration of racing somehow numbed your cramps. All you could feel was the rush of the race.
And you were successful. With your fans cheering loudly, you secured pole position. "I'm going to take a break right here. Someone get me some painkillers." You laughed into the radio, pulling up on a patch of grass and climbing out of the car.
Exhausted, you found yourself sleeping on the floor face down, completely drained from quali. Max parked a few meters ahead, spotting you in the unusual position, and knelt down to help you remove your helmet. He fed you a painkiller and handed you his water bottle, supporting you as you leaned against him.
The interaction was recorded on the big screen, and your fans were captivated by the tender moment. You rode on the side of Max's car, too exhausted to drive your own, as you made your way back to the garages. "Congrats on the pole. How are you feeling?" Max asked, concerned in his eyes.
"Pain." You replied jokingly, leaning forward slightly. You were grateful for Max's presence, his support providing comfort in a physically and emotionally demanding sport.
"Radio check." Out of instinct you began singing the first theme song that came to mind, super mario bros. It was a little tradition you had started as a rookie, featuring piano masterpieces or your favourite songs, sometimes even TV show intros and video game themes.
Your voice carried through the formation lap, as you tried to stay calm and composed. You looked at Max in your side mirrors, knowing he was watching over you with unwavering support.
★ ☆ earlier that day ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
". . . I understand what you mean." Max and you decided to to go to the track together on Sunday, your boyfriend driving because you did not have a driver's license.
"I will stay by your side no matter what . . . Until you kick me out of course." He joked making you chuckle. He smiled widely once he heard your laugh, lifting your hand to his mouth, pressing a soft kiss to your palm. "Never going to kick you out, Maxie." You loved him so much.
"And it's the last lap, the lap that decides the champion for this year. Redbull and Porsche are wheel to wheel, on their way to lap Hulkenberg and De Vries. Porsche is the first to- OH-" "Terrible crash there from Porsche and the Alpha Tauri. The red flag is out." "Still no movement from the Porsche driver."
"We can, fast forward it a little bit? Yeah?" The interviewer offered but max only shook his head, his eyes watching the clip on the tablet. "You can see me right there." Max chuckled pointing to his figure.
He was fighting, he was thrashing, trying to reach you. The marshals held him back as he begged to see you.
"You know, she told me earlier that day she was scared that she would either lose me or the race." Max chuckled feeling his eyes water, but he held them back. "It was me who ended up losing both in the end."
"No no no no. Please let me see her. Please." "Y/N PLEASE." He was crying. He was begging for you.
Max watched as he sat in his garage being comforted by your father, hugging him him tightly. "Very emotional moment." The interviewer commented as max watched the screen, blinking his tears away. "He gives very good hugs." Max commented weakly chuckling.
"And in first place, Y/N L/N. Who could not be here at the moment." Your trophy was set down on the highest pedestal, and max looked at your empty space longingly.
"When did you get the news?" "That's a sensitive topic." Max declined, finishing the interview shortly after. It was early Tuesday, and a year has passed since that race. Max walked quietly through your home circuit. Hands in his jean pockets.
He pulled out a velvet box, opening the box to look at the diamond. "Was going to ask the question on the podium." He told you, looking up at the 7ft statue put up in your memory.
Max pulled out a band aid, gently reaching up and putting it on your nose. "See you around." He sighed walking backwards, taking one last look at your statue before leaving.
★ ☆ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
You folded your arms, looking at your rival: Max Verstappen. The two of you had tied in the karting championship and were going to have to share first place with each other.
A glaring fight was taking place between the two teens' as your fathers tried to argue their way into getting the other off the the winning pedestal.
You huffed looking at Max's somehow injured nose, making you scrunched your nose in disgust. But your auntie taught you kindness, so despite hating Max Verstappen, you pulled a band aid and reached over. "Don't touch me." Max swatted your hand away, but you grabbed his bicep firmly.
"Hold still, will you?" You scolded him, pressing the band aid on his nose. "Your nose is bleeding." "Then don't touch it." He pushed you away.
"I was only trying to help." You pushed him back harder. How you ended up on the floor wrestling was a mystery to your family. You did end up sharing the trophy together, each holding a side of the trophy, frowning at the other.
To this day, Max has a picture of that memory in his wallet.

Listing things I liked and disliked about the Mario Movie cause I am bored
I think I was pretty neutral mostly. There was both good and bad shit. Please do not attack me- I will list what I disliked first so that when I list the good stuff, it’ll probably make you smile I hope-
Dislikes:
No accents. I get it was “explained”, but I still feel they were kinda bland. Even the cartoon had better voices :P
Chris Pratt Mario, so fucking weak-
Luigi barely having any screen time and spends most of it in a cage. I get it’s called The Mario Movie, but I really wanted to see more of Mario and Luigi being brothers
Mario never calling Luigi “Weege” like in Super Mario Adventures
Penguins were hardly even there...
LUIGI AND PEACH NEVER SWAP CLOTHES LIKE IN SUPER MARIO ADVENTURES-
Peaches...I am tired of fucking hearing that song on the internet. AND MY MOM HORRIBLY SINGING IT-
NO KOOPALINGS *SOBS*
Peach is fucking shorter. SHE IS LITERALLY CONFIRMED TO BE 6′1
Peach’s voice wasn’t doing it for me
Peach being animated weirdly
The story they gave Peach becoming a princess in my opinion made no sense
Peach missing her ponytail for some outfits
Peach having an axe instead of gun like in the Rabbids game. I REALLY WANTED HER TO HAVE A GUN-
No Peach Parasol ;-;
Peach having more of Daisy’s personality. AT LEAST MAKE HER ACT LIKE SPM PEACH OR SUPER MARIO ADVENTURES PEACH, SHE WAS MORE BADASS IN THOSE
The Bowser Peach wedding again. Bowser please, she doesn’t like you XD
Giving Peach a bland Wedding dress, you’d think Bowser would give her a fancy one! And my brother was disappointed that she didn’t say the line “And who picked this dress out? It's AWFUL!” like in SPM, he really wanted her to say it XD
Lumalee animated so weird-
Mario and Peach didn’t have enough adorable scenes together :’)
King Bob-omb got exploded *SOBS*
NO PMTOK REFERENCES- (JOKE! HUGE JOKE-)
Now what I actually liked :D :
Mario Bros Rap! MY BROTHER AND I STARTED RAPPING IT-
The original Toadstool cameo! (She had a way better voice than this Peach btw-)
PAULINE CAMEO
SHY GUYS!!!!!
BOWSER MY BELOVED
TOAD! I LOVED HIM SO MUCH!
PEACH FUCKING TOSSING MARIO, HAD ME DYING-
Mario’s zero to hero montage
THE 80′S SONGS THAT APPEARED
BOWSER
ALL THE MUSIC REFERENCES
INVERTED TRIANGLE CAMEO
DK RAP!!!! I legit screamed. I sat there rapping while my family was confused cause only I know the DK Rap-
THE FUCKING BLUE SHELL KOOPA! AND HE HAD WINGS LIKE THE ORIGINAL
LUDWIG VON KOOPA REFERENCE
Bowser playing piano
KAMEK DRESSED AS PEACH
Peach kicking everybody’s ass at the wedding
BOWSER
LEVEL COMPLETE, STIMMING WASN’T ENOUGH, I NEED TO EXPLODE! SUPER MARIO BROS 2 OVERWORLD THEME HAD ME IN TEARS SINCE PEOPLE FORGET ABOUT THAT ONE AND IT’S ONE OF MY FAVES
BOWSER BOWSER BOWSER BOWSER BOWSER BOWSER
Listen, I’ve loved Bowser since I was 8, don’t judge me-

Todays rip: 06/05/2024
Last Freight-train Night
Season 8 No Album Release (Read More)
Ripped by mint chip
youtube
Huge apologies in advance for not posting this on a Friday or even a Saturday. The joke has been completely missed. I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me 😔.
Ah man, melody swap rips. They're always fun, right? Even in the channel's earliest days, we had stuff like SNES Mini Circulation, Earth, Wind & Bombs and Akumajō Lololo expertly showing off their inherent, obvious appeal - leveraging the instrumentation of one track to bring out a whole new vibe to another piece of music through rearrangement. But especially early on, and even nowadays, you'll notice that some games get favored above others for melody swaps. Super Mario 64, the Pokémon series, NES and Game Boy games, Plok! - granted, the reasons for a lot of these are very easily explained, but with games like Plok! in particular the recent emphasis has come from a select few rippers' absolute enthusiasm for the game and the unique soundscape it provides. Tons of Plok! rips are absolutely mindblowing as a result of this passion, and I intend to cover some of these in the future no doubt - but Last Freight-train Night gave me many of those same thoughts upon first listen whilst being from a game I never would've thought would be one befitting for melody swapping.
Again, to clarify: It's perfectly understandable why those aforementioned select games get so many melody swap rips made of them. Pokémon in particular has at once such a nostalgic, distinct yet versatile set of sounds that has allowed for a ton of creativity in how rips are done, with everything from the piano-driven peacefulness of Blue Mareep to the synth-heavy insanity of Light! (Potentialseeker Colress). The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, meanwhile, is a game I only truly associate with two instruments - the pan flute and the violin - and that paired with its relative obscurity compared to other often-ripped games made me understand why all the chips wouldn't be placed on it in particular. Clearly, I was underestimating both the game and first-time ripper mint chip here, as Last Freight-train Night positively blew me away in its arrangement whilst staying absolutely faithful to the sound of the game its taking from. It's pan flutes and strings, yes - but they're leveraged to a far greater degree than I could've ever imagined.
If you presented me with a choice of song to use in a melody swap for Spirit Tracks' Overworld Adventure theme, I wouldn't have been able to give you an answer - yet had I given you one, it would've probably been incredibly far off the mark from what Last Freight-train Night lands at. It's a full arrangement of Katy Perry's Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F), the absolute pop sensation released just two years after Spirit Tracks itself - yes, in other words, this is a PAN FLUTE arrangement of hit song Don't Mine At Night. Like, maybe I'm just easily impressed, maybe I'm just far too attached to Spirit Tracks' sound from playing on its stage in Smash Bros. all too much, but I have to commend Last Freight-train Night just off of its concept alone. But, come on now, you've heard Thwâmpröck Desert - you KNOW that Season 8 has been delivering in far more than just concept alone.
See, the rip isn't just pleasant for its novelty, it feels as if it fully realizes itself in so many small little ways. There's of course the persisting banjo-like backing from the original keeping a playful, plucky adventuring tone, but it's in listening in close that you'll hear something truly special. You guessed it: That chuff-chuff-chuffing sound persisting through the entire track is the sound the player's train makes in Spirit Tracks when moving at the highest speed, whereupon it starts to sync up with the Overworld Adventure theme - in other words, the sound effects are a separate element from the actual music piece, yet Last Freight-train Night goes the extra mile in including it just to make it all feel more...right. The cherry on top of even that is, of course, the sounds of crossing signals fading in and out of the song at various points throughout its runtime. This isn't referencing anything in particular from Last Friday Night, it's a completely original touch by mint chip, but it adds SO much to the listening experience: Pair it with the other two things mentioned in this paragraph, and it starts to feel as if this track is truly taking place within Spirit Tracks itself, a sense of immersion far above what was necessary is conveyed through just these small touches alone. It stimulates the brain in ways I never thought I needed - and in terms of sheer listenability, it all just helps give the arrangement a real sense of tempo, befitting of the dance-able pop song it's an arrangement of.
Season 8 is a lot of things, and I'm still trying to ascertain what to truly make it of four months into its run. But if there's one constant I'm sure of, its that the channel's quality has basically never been higher - rips like Last Freight-train Night are dropping left and right without being part of larger events, as if to just casually remind you of how good of a place the channel is in right now. And having those explosions of quality be attached to games which really haven't seen all too much action on SiIva compared to the big boys, to the channel's "hidden gem" games as it were? Be it back with Plok! in Season 6 or all the countless other examples over the years since, that always just fills me with such joy. Every game is someone's favorite, and every someone has the potential to be a SiIvaGunner contributor - it only takes one person's love for a game to get rips as heartfelt (and seemingly already beloved!) beloved as Last Freight-train Night.
