I think it’s so funny and endearing when people, especially younger people, don’t quite grasp just how much culture was largely always shared across the world, even before the Internet was a thing. I just watched a video exploring the possibility of one of the Super Mario World overworld theme songs having been inspired by an old American pop song that wasn’t super successful in America and the YouTuber kept saying things like “but how would people in Japan have listened to a song that wasn’t very successful in its home country… back in the 60s???” Bro you’re talking about the decade when the hottest thing in Japan were bands called stuff like The Tigers and The Spiders who styled themselves after The Beatles and released pretty much only covers of rock n’ roll songs in English!

In 2014, a dance number on the Dancing With The Stars show featured an original Super Mario Bros. remix. While the song starts out as the Super Mario Bros. overworld theme, new instruments are then added and other tracks from that game are played.

This event was an official Nintendo promotion and was mentioned on the Nintendo of America official site at the time of airing.

Thesis: in the Mario universe, the characters can hear the background music

I firmly believe that the background music in the Mario games is diegetic, meaning that the characters can hear it. Here are four examples that support this.

EXAMPLE THE FIRST: in Mario x Rabbids Kingdom Battle, when you’re on the overworld as opposed to the tactical encounters, there are various musical things scattered around the world that appear to be playing the music. If you interact with them, you can turn them off and make them stop playing the music… and this causes the music heard by the player to be quieter.

EXAMPLE THE SECOND: in the New Super Mario Bros series, the Koopa Troopas, Goombas, and similar enemies famously dance, jump, or otherwise react to the little “ba-baaah!” musical cues, strongly implying that they can hear it. (And since this affects how they move, a player who doesn’t take this into account will misjudge where the enemies will be at any given moment, possibly causing Mario to get hurt or killed, and that’s somehow hilarious to me.)

EXAMPLE THE THIRD: this one is my favorite. In Super Mario RPG, in the special suite at the Marrymore inn, Mario can go into the bathroom and take a shower. While he does this, he loudly whistles the ground theme from Super Mario Bros. Now I ask you, reader, where could he have heard that song before? Exactly. It’s diegetic, I tell you.

EXAMPLE THE FOURTH: much like the third example, in Luigi’s Mansion, Luigi nervously hums along with the main theme. Where’d he learn the song? Why is he so on-beat? The music being audible in-universe is the simplest explanation.

This simply makes me happy in a geeky way.

Hey, look - its close to the new year, its past midnight as I'm writing this, and I'm feeling sentimental. I know I could be putting more delicacy into my choices for these last days of the year, but please allow me to be be a bit vulnerable today.

I started making these posts seven months ago. A month later, I made the full commitment into making it a full-on BLOG-blog. That is, a blog to truly let me spill my heart over, beyond just writing one or five sentences per rip, to ensure none of my feelings get left on the drawing board. It was never something I did to catch a wave of fame, or to show off on a resume: top to bottom, this blog began as a distraction from work, and has turned into a full-scale love letter for a project that has helped shape me into the person I am today. Now, with *this* project, I've found motivation and confidence: I've had the opportunity to reignite my passion for writing, satiating my lust for analysis and discussion, and most crucially providing a thank-you to a group of creators that have always felt woefully underappreciated.

What I never really expected, was to have those same wishes returned back to me.

From the ask box, to the messages, to the Rippers' Commentary reblogs, to the discussions held in the SiIvaCord and on Discord DMs themselves, its those heartfelt words, that gratitude and joy, that keeps me driven to continue this blog until I'm all wrung dry. I've long considered myself terrible at maintaining connections, yet with each message I receive it feels as if I've made a new friend, their words of support and love never leaving my mind no matter how much time passes. It still feels like I'm somewhat of a shut-in, yet I've had the ability to talk to so many more incredible people in the back half of this year alone than I have for so much of my life before.

So, with all that sappy shit said - The Paragoomba and the Wiggler goes out to one of those people. It was only a few weeks ago this month that I covered vvsvlogs' prior work on Wham! Into Dreams, and just how much her singing truly resonated with me. As soon as that post was done, I just...felt a need to know, if she'd done any more singing work for the channel, and she was kind enough to point out her contribution to RIP² that I'd somehow completely missed. A rearrangement of an immensely simple but effective Season 1 rip, The Paragooma and the Wiggler is still a mashup of a Super Mario Bros. 3 theme and an Owl City song, yet now with a far more lively, dynamic instrumental thanks to 601billionlazer's arranging, and with vocals wholly redone by vvsvlogs, as mentioned before - and, indeed, just like Wham! Into Dreams, I connected with the rip almost immediately after listening to it. There's of course also new life injected into the non-vocal half of the song through the rearrangement, new sound effects added to punctuate lyrics, an ebb and flow maintained with the instrumentation alternating between the original chiptune sound and a plucky piano. With all that said, its an incredible rip top to bottom, showing just how talented of a singer vvsvlogs is above all else - I daresay the new vocals full-on crush the originals for me.

Yet, there's a reason I wanted to put that big sentimental introduction to this post in particular. Because back when I first discovered Wham! Into Dreams years ago, I may still have been a devoted fan, but I was a wallflower althesame: barely in the SiIvaCord, barely in discussions with anyone other than the occasional YouTube comment. It's only through all of the aforementioned outcomes of running this blog, the people I've met and the messages I've received, that I finally feel truly at home with this community - that I found the courage to reach out, talk to, and send my sincerest thanks directly to these incredible creators, with at least SOMETHING to show for it. vvsvlogs is just one of a dozen or two people I've gotten to talk to through doing this blog, and it never ceases to warm my heart - both finally getting to talk to people who've indirectly pulled me out of dark times through simply doing what they love, and through knowing I've been able to make so many of them smile from the words I'm putting onto this darn page on a daily basis.

Happy new year, SiIvaGunner team. To all of you in the team reading silently without accounts to reply with, I hope you know just how much I love you.

So yeah! I'm now getting into the Super Mario fandom! I started getting into it after watching the Super Mario Bros. Movie, and I absolutely adored it too! (Mainly cuz of Bowser X3) To celebrate, here's my Mario OC, Princess Ophelia, the princess of the Arcane Isles! In my headcanon, the Arcane Isles is a kingdom full of magic and powerful witches, and Ophelia is the ruler of this kingdom! I have a bunch of concepts for the kingdom and how it works, such as magic staffs and wands, and familiars, which are creatures given to witches to serve and protect them and assist them with their magic. I plan to get into the concepts of the kingdom later, and I even have ideas for a fan game/story. 4. Best game soundtrack (full album or single track)?

Don’t do this to me… an actually impossible question to answer 😂 persona has too many good songs to list, the NieR franchise’s music is mindblowing in intent and construction, Toby Fox exists, the SMT V soundtrack has some absolute bangers that have been on repeat for me, Katamari, the Mother games, Omori, TWEWY, Kinkdom Hearts, Zelda, not to mention the ones that are purely iconic like Mario’s theme or one winged angel. But yeah, I listen to video game music a normal amount.

25. Favorite environment in a game?

The Coral Highlands/Rotten Vale in Monster Hunter World. I remember my jaw dropping the first time I went to the Coral Highlands in MHW… you get all the beauty and color and life of an underwater level without any of the irritating gameplay changes, it’s a win win 🥳🥳🥳 and then you travel further down from those gorgeous pinks and whites and enter the Rotten Vale, this disgusting, rotting, effluvial graveyard where all that beauty goes to die is such a cool dichotomy and a rare moment of like, good narrative theming in a monster hunter game 😂 you have to fight this monster called a Legiana, who is the apex Monster of the Coral Highlands (( the toughest beastie around during this part of MHW )), an ice wyvern who you have plot based beef with for knocking you into the Coral Highlands to begin with. For me anyways, the Legiana was also the second difficulty wall in the game (( after that damn flame Trex in the first world 😤 )) so I had a lot of herstory with her, but when exploring the rotten vale you’ll sometimes find the corpse of one just chilling there. Even the strongest of monsters die, and when they do they’re nothing but meat to the scavengers of the Rotten Vale. Super cool areas and very excited for MH: Wilds 🥰

29. Favorite childhood game?

Probably the first Super Smash Bros… it was the first game I could consistently beat my older sister at and the first inkling I had that it was possible to be GOOD at doing something, a high I’ve been chasing ever since 🥴
