Wordless Love
When Luigi arrives home, Mario still hasn't returned.
Luigi sighs and closes the door behind him. The pipes in the castle really must be clogged. He wonders if he should come to his brother's aid, but he knows that, if Mario needed his help, he would have called him.
Besides, this gives Mario and Peach a chance to spend some more time together.
With a somewhat amused smile, Luigi leaves the toolbox on the entrance cabinet and hangs his hat on the rack. He's feeling very tired after a long day of single-handedly serving his Brooklyn clients, and all he feels like doing is taking a shower, grabbing a quick dinner, and going to bed.
But he can't go to sleep without Mario. Even though he knows his big brother is safe and sound in Princess Peach's castle, Luigi needs Mario to, at least, be home so he can fall asleep.
So he heads to the bathroom and takes a fast, but warm and relaxing shower. When he finishes, and since Mario isn’t home yet, Luigi opts to leave everything ready to make dinner later and goes out into the garden.
It's cool, as autumn is coming to the Mushroom Kingdom, but that doesn't stop him. Luigi smiles as he walks through his small garden, the one he has cultivated with so much care and attention since he and Mario moved there. He looks closely at each plant, each flower, and makes sure to irrigate the ones that need some water. He talks to each and every one of them, tells them how beautiful they are that night, and quietly sings a little song during his walk. He also makes sure to check that the automatic watering system he installed with Mario's help is still working perfectly, and smiles to himself, satisfied, after verifying that it is.
These flowers, this garden, are his pride and joy. Every day he’s more and more happy for the good fortune of having a small corner in which to raise his favorite flowers. When he lived in Brooklyn he had to make do with a couple of flowerpots, but, in the Mushroom Kingdom, there’s room for all the plants in the world. So, without a second thought, Luigi transplanted his first two flowers and, since then, he’s grown many more.
And now his beloved garden looks beautiful in broad daylight as well as under the faint, bright glow of the full moon. Each flower has a particular beauty and scent, and Luigi has learned to recognize each one by its fragrance before he even sees them.
When he re-enters the house, he realizes that he has spent a whole hour outside, walking among his plants and singing to them. However, just as he closes the garden door behind him, the front door, which is opposite him on the other side of the living room, opens at last.
“Mario!” he exclaims as soon as he sees him enter, and runs towards him. “You’re back!”
Before his brother has time to drop his tools or close the door behind him, Luigi pounces on him. Mario lets out a loud laugh of surprise and staggers back a little at his impetus but does not hesitate to return his brother's embrace with the same heartiness.
“Yeah, I’m back,” he mumbles, laughing, as he pats Luigi’s back.
They smile at each other as they part, happy to be together again. Luigi takes Mario’s hat from him and hangs it on the rack next to his.
“Looks like there was a lot of work at the castle today, right?” he says meanwhile.
“Oh, you just can’t imagine!” Mario exclaims, dropping his tools any which way on the entrance cabinet. “I think we’d better go together next time. We’ll simply postpone all the appointments we have with our Brooklyn customers.”
Smiling, Luigi carefully sets each tool in its place inside the toolbox he’s been carrying all day.
“I thought about coming to help you,” he admits, “but I didn’t know if you’d be... busy.”
He wonders if Mario will understand what he’s referring to, if he'll catch the hidden meaning beneath that one word, but he senses he'll have to keep that joke to himself.
“Busy?” Mario looks at him with a raised eyebrow, confused. “What do you mean by that?”
Luigi lets out a low chuckle as he places the last tool.
“It’s nothing, don’t mind me,” he says, amused, and grabs Mario’s hand to lead him to the kitchen. “Come on! Are you hungry? How about I make you a lasagna?”
“Lasagna?” Mario repeats, his face suddenly lighting up like a lighthouse in the middle of the darkest night. “But of course! What kind of question is that?”
Luigi lets out a chuckle, cheerful and touched in equal parts. His brother will never change, and Luigi adores him more and more every day for that.
Amid jokes and laughter, the brothers enter the kitchen. Luigi, after putting on his green apron with a pattern of orange flowers, starts cooking immediately, and Mario, instead of sitting down, stands next to him and passes him the ingredients and utensils needed to prepare the lasagna. In the meantime, he tells Luigi how his day has been, as they separated in the morning to go to work in different places, and explains how difficult it was to unblock all the pipes in the castle. Then, always ready to listen to him, Mario asks Luigi how his day has been, but Luigi, more focused on the cooking, shrugs and quickly summarizes what has been a very normal working day for him.
“And how’s Peach?” he asks casually as they wait for the lasagna to be ready. “How did things go with her?”
“Just as usual.” This time it’s Mario who shrugs, but Luigi doesn’t fail to notice that a slight blush is now covering his brother’s cheeks. “You know her. She’s very... kind and sweet. Just as usual,” he repeats, looking away.
Luigi covers his mouth with his hand to hide a giggle. He would love to hear more, to encourage Mario to tell him more about those feelings that have undoubtedly blossomed in his heart after meeting the beautiful princess, but Luigi doesn't insist. He knows his brother so well that he’s convinced he will open up when the time comes, when he feels ready, and Luigi wouldn't want to pressure him for anything in the world.
It doesn't take long for the lasagna to be ready at last. As he does every night, Luigi serves his brother first, and smiles at the keenness with which Mario takes the first bite. As he sits down, his plate already full, he notices his brother's satisfied expression, and the soft "Mmm!" Mario emits as he chews causes Luigi’s smile to widen.
“My goodness, Luigi,” Mario exclaims admiringly. “Your cooking gets better every day!”
Luigi blushes and laughs nervously.
“Th-thank you,” he stammers, embarrassed, before starting to eat too.
During dinner, however, Luigi realizes something that makes him uneasy: his brother is tired. More than him, even. Luigi knows this because Mario, who usually talks non-stop between bites, remains silent this time, just centered on savoring the lasagna, a clear indication that his energy has diminished considerably since he came back home. Luigi sees it in his eyelids, which appear somewhat droopy, no doubt exhausted and eager to close until the next day. Luigi senses it in the slowness with which Mario gradually puts the food into his mouth. Still, every time their eyes meet, Mario gives him warm smiles and makes sure to keep telling him how delicious he finds the lasagna.
Luigi loves to cook and always feels flattered that his brother so enthusiastically enjoys the dishes he lovingly prepares for him.
But tonight there is something more important.
Tonight is not just about having dinner with Mario and spending some quality time with him before going to bed, but also about taking care of his exhausted older brother.
“Come on,” he says as he gets up, once they’ve both finished dessert. “How about I run you a hot bath to help you relax?”
Mario smiles, and his grin, although full of affection as always, is also a true reflection of the fatigue that plagues him from within.
“I’d love that, Lu.”
Determined, Luigi begins to pick up the dishes, but, when he’s about to start washing them, meaning to do it quickly so that he can take care of Mario, he senses some fingers on his shoulder that make him turn around. He meets again his brother’s sweet smile, who reaches out his other hand to take the plate that Luigi had grabbed.
“I’ll wash them,” Mario offers.
“Oh, no, that’s not necessary,” Luigi refuses, worried that Mario’s tiredness will increase.
“I insist, Lu.” Mario, unwilling to surrender, gives him a gentle and playful hip thrust to softly push him away. “You made dinner. It’s only fair.”
Luigi knows Mario's determined expression too well to know there's no point in trying to stop him. Defeated, he agrees to step away from the kitchen sink with a resigned sigh and watches his brother with a hand on his hip.
“All right, you win,” he concedes, at which Mario’s smile widens. “I’ll go draw your bath.”
Mario nods with a chuckle as he does the dishes, and Luigi takes off his apron, which he had inadvertently left on during dinner, and goes into the bathroom. The first thing he does is close the door and turn on the heater to warm up the room. After putting the plug in the bathtub, he turns on the hot water faucet first and lets the tub fill up a bit before turning on the cold, but not too much. He wants the water to be hot and to last like that long enough for Mario's muscles to relax after today's hard work.
In the meantime, he hangs Mario's bathrobe on the rack next to the tub and places a small towel on a stool in case his brother wants to wash his hair. Luigi also prepares the shampoo, soap and sponge, and puts them on top of the towel so that Mario can reach them from inside the bathtub. He takes the hairdryer out of the cupboard where they keep it and carefully sets it in a corner of the sink, because he knows that Mario does not like to go to bed with wet hair, so he will need it if he decides to wash his head. Luigi quickly leaves the bathroom to go to his bedroom for a moment: he hurriedly opens the top drawer of the dresser they share, takes out Mario's favorite pajamas and returns to the bathroom at lightning speed. He then pours some soothing bath salts into the water and places a towel on the floor, in front of the tub, so that Mario won't slip.
Finally, satisfied with his work, Luigi turns off the faucet, switches off the heater and goes out into the hallway in search of his brother.
“The bath is ready!” he announces with an exaggerated flourish as he enters the kitchen.
Mario laughs, giving him an amused look, and puts the last plate away on the sideboard before following him. Although the bathroom is very close to the kitchen, Luigi guides his brother as if they were inside one of those old mansions with an infinite number of corridors and rooms and opens the door with a graceful bow.
“I hope you find it to your liking, sir,” he says, modifying his voice so that it sounds deep.
Mario lets out a chuckle again but puts his shoulders back and places both hands behind his back as he walks past Luigi into the bathroom.
“Very warm and cozy, butler,” he replies, imitating his brother’s tone.
Luigi, still bent over and with his arm outstretched, is forced to cover his mouth with his other hand to contain the snort that was about to escape from his throat. However, when he straightens up, his laughter is stifled by the tender look, full of gratitude, that Mario, standing in front of him, throws at him.
Then Mario reaches out and wraps an arm around his neck to pull him close, giving him a quick squeeze in which their cheeks squish against the other’s. The moment is so fleeting that Luigi does not have time to raise his arm to reciprocate the gesture of his brother, who, a second before releasing him, turns his head to place a quick kiss on his cheek.
“Thank you, Lu,” he says, his voice full of warmth. “It’s just what I needed.”
Luigi's heart beats a little faster, full of bliss, and a touched smile blooms on his face as the blood rushes to his cheeks. Despite the fact that Mario showers him in affection quite often, Luigi just can’t help blushing. Inside him, tenderness and emotion intermingle with a certain embarrassment that makes him feel bashful, as he does not think he deserves so much gratitude. After all, he’s taking care of his brother in the same way Mario has taken care of him and watched over him all his life. That's how they’ve always worked and that's how they will continue to work.
Still, he keeps smiling at Mario, who watches him with his warm grin tattooed on his face as he slowly slides shut the bathroom door. On impulse, when there’s barely a small crack left, Luigi raises his hand and waves it in farewell, and Mario, with a chuckle, reciprocates his gesture immediately.
Luigi sighs, satisfied, when the door finally closes. He’s sure that the bath will do Mario good, so he goes to his room to give his brother some space and privacy. He really hopes it will be to his liking and help him relax.
Once in his bedroom, Luigi feels as if the autumn chill has crept into it through a window. He makes sure all of them are closed and opts to turn on the radiator to warm up the bedroom a bit, especially to keep Mario from getting cold when he finishes his bath. Luigi goes over to his brother's bed, uncovers it and grabs the pillows to soften them a bit, since that's how Mario feels most comfortable. He turns on both nightlights, Mario's red one and his green one, and looks around to make sure everything is in order.
As he stands in the center of the room, Luigi feels a huge wave of exhaustion wash over him. His day has not been as hard as Mario's, but he certainly needs to rest too, although he knows he can't do so until his brother goes to bed as well. He doesn't want to pressure him or interrupt his bath, so Luigi takes his time to tidy up the room a bit, uncover his own bed and put on his pajamas.
Just as he finishes buttoning the top of his green and white striped pajamas, he suddenly remembers something. He almost forgot! He rushes hurriedly out of his room and into the kitchen. Trying to go slowly so as not to break anything with his usual clumsiness, Luigi pulls a glass from the cupboard, fills it with fresh milk and pops it into the microwave.
He’s walking past the bathroom just as the sound of the hairdryer reaches his ears. Luigi sighs in relief, for he knows what that means: his brother will be out in no more than five minutes, so he will find the glass of hot milk waiting for him on his bedside table, where Luigi carefully places it. Satisfied, he picks up the book waiting on his own nightstand and goes to the living room to sit in his rocking chair, where he plans to read while waiting for Mario.
The book is so interesting that it grabs his attention right away, making him lose track of time. When the bathroom door finally opens, Luigi realizes that he has read ten pages almost without blinking. He smiles to himself, for he's loving the story he's reading, and places the bookmark between the pages before looking up.
As he does so, Luigi lets out a little chuckle: his brother, standing in the doorway, has skin almost redder than his pajama top. Mario, hearing him, smiles with resignation.
“I overdid it with the hot water, didn’t I?” he says with a laugh, heading for the bedroom.
“A little,” Luigi replies, amused, going after him.
This time it is Mario who holds the door for him, and Luigi gives him a nod and a chuckle as he enters the room. Gently and smiling, Mario takes the book from his hands and goes to Luigi's bedside table to leave it there, while Luigi, somewhat surprised, closes the door behind him and walks to his bed as well.
After dropping the book, Mario turns to face him. Luigi stops in front of his brother and wonders if, perhaps, Mario wants to tell him something or ask him for something else before going to sleep.
But his brother doesn't utter a word: with a warm smile on his lips, he raises his arms and wraps them around Luigi, resting his chin on his shoulder and placing a hand on the back of his neck to bring him closer. Despite his initial astonishment, Luigi immediately relaxes in his big brother's arms and, with a smile, lifts his arms to wrap them around Mario's waist as he closes his eyes. His brother, patting his back gently and running his fingers through his hair at the back of his neck, lets out a deep and resounding sigh while still hugging him tightly.
“Thank you for always taking care of me, Lu,” he whispers, his lips close to Luigi’s ear.
“Oh.” Luigi lets out a nervous giggle. “You don’t have to thank me, Mario. That’s what brothers do, right?”
Luigi feels him laugh in his arms.
“I’m certainly lucky to have you as a brother.”
Luigi's heart warms up, overwhelmed by a deep emotion. He feels his eyes moisten and he embraces his brother with more strength and affection, hoping, wishing, that his way of hugging him will be enough to let Mario know that he is the one who feels fortunate to have him as his big brother. If he had nothing else, if he were homeless and jobless and could not find anything to eat every day, he would still feel the luckiest man in the world if he still had Mario by his side. He doesn't need anything else to be happy.
They remain like this, embraced, Luigi's hands on Mario's back and waist, Mario's hands on the back of Luigi's neck and back, for a time they cannot, and will not, determine. Wrapped in a warmth that comes from both the radiator and their own hearts, the brothers enjoy those brief moments of peace and safety in each other's arms, in which, without the need for words, they express how much they love the other and how important they are to each other.
With a sigh, Mario begins to pull away from Luigi, very slowly, as if he doesn't really want to, and Luigi understands, for he too is reluctant to end the contact. His brother slides his hand from the back of his neck to his cheek and watches him intensely, his blue eyes glistening with emotion.
“I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
And Luigi knows, with absolute certainty, that Mario is speaking from the heart, as he always does when he expresses his affection towards him, as deep as Luigi's for him. With a heartfelt smile, Luigi raises a hand and places it on Mario's.
“I will always be here for you,” he promises, looking into his eyes.
With tenderness shining in his, Mario widens his smile and carefully begins to gently press Luigi's head down as he does the same. Luigi, knowing what his brother intends, lets himself be guided without hesitation and closes his eyes for a second before their foreheads meet. The sigh they release, in unison, as if they had rehearsed it, is deep, intense, and reflects all the peace and serenity that this touch makes them both feel.
“And I for you, Lu,” Mario answers in a soft whisper.
When, seconds later, they raise their heads, they give each other one last smile, as full of love as all the smiles they’ve shared since the day they were born. Mario caresses his cheek while Luigi gives him a gentle squeeze on the shoulder, and then he softly gasps when, suddenly, he remembers something.
“I almost forgot,” he says with a chuckle as he walks over to Mario’s bedside table.
He carefully takes the glass of milk in his hands and turns to his brother, who beams enthusiastically as he sees what Luigi is offering him.
“Thank you, Lu!” he exclaims, accepting the glass.
Luigi smiles, moved at the eagerness and speed with which Mario drinks the hot liquid. When he finally finishes it, he lets out a sigh of pleasure and Luigi covers his mouth to hold back a giggle, not only because of his brother's satisfied expression, but also because of the spot that glistens under his moustache. Mario looks at him with a raised eyebrow, though he laughs too, and Luigi reaches over to his nightstand for a napkin to wipe his brother's face. The latter lets him do it and they share a last moment of knowing laughter.
Luigi then takes the glass from his brother's hands and goes to the kitchen to wash it. Before leaving the bedroom, he hears Mario drop like a bundle on the mattress, and when he returns, as he expected, he finds him lying on top of the sheets any which way. With a giggle that is both amused and tender, Luigi comes to his side: he slowly pulls back the sheets from under Mario's body and carefully covers him with them. Mario, eyes closed, smiles and snuggles in, and Luigi gently tucks him in and places a kiss on his cheek.
“Good night, Mario,” he whispers. “Sleep well.”
Mario's smile widens and a deep sigh escapes from his lips. Luigi, hoping that his brother will indeed sleep well that night, gives him a gentle caress on his hair before turning off the radiator and heading, at last, to his own bed.
And just as he is about to turn off his lamp, the last light still on in the room, he hears a sleepy, exhausted voice coming from his brother's bed:
“Good night, Lulu.”

Hello! I hope you’re doing well! ☺️ For the emoji prompt, could you do 💕 for the bros (platonic ofc)?
Emoji Prompt
💕 Kisses (platonic) - Mario and Luigi
I couldn't think of a full scenario, so have a couple of short snippets for the Bros ^^
* * *
The Little Things
"LUIGI!"
Luigi cried out in alarm as his brother charged forward and hugged him with such force.
"I thought I'd lost you!", Mario cried. Luigi was alarmed to feel hot tears seeping into his shoulder.
He gripped Mario's arm and petted his head.
"I'm alright bro, really", he smiled.
Mario shook his head and leaned back a little to take Luigi's face in his hands.
"Don't ever do that again", he said, as a full out sob erupted from deep within his throat. He put his forehead to his twin's, pressing so close that he felt their pulses beating in sync.
"Please...don't ever do that...", Mario trailed off. "I can't...I just can't..."
Another sob came from the older plumber. Luigi didn't say anything, and just let his own tears fall.
Mario pulled back again to press a kiss to his brother's forehead. The amount of sheer relief and love in that one gesture made Luigi's heart twist.
"Next time you want to do something crazy, let me do it with you!"
"I'll try", Luigi sniffed. "Just don't expect me to make you the ringleader."
Mario laughed through his tears, and hugged him.
* * *
Luigi let out a worried sigh as he ran his fingers through his brother's hair.
It had only been a short time since they had moved to the Mushroom Kingdom, but already Mario was starting to feel the burnout. Luigi was too; however, whilst the green plumber was akin to knowing when to take breaks for himself, Mario on the other hand had been far too stubborn and had insisted that he was fine and he could commit to his duties.
The end result was now a man fully worn out, and lying on his brother's chest in the tranquillity of their bedroom in Toad Town.
"And what did you say to the princess this morning?", Luigi coaxed.
Mario let out an irritated sigh.
"That we could handle that job on the castle plumbing."
"And by we meaning you. And you got a headache and needed to stop. Just like I warned you would happen."
Mario huffed and hid his face in his brother's chest.
"Why didn't you just take a break?"
The words were laced with such concern that Mario felt his heart wrench with guilt.
"I didn't want to let her down", Mario whispered. "I didn't want to let anyone down. What kind of reliable hero would I be if I took time off?!"
"A functioning one?", said Luigi, eyebrows raised.
A silence followed.
"There's nothing wrong with taking care of yourself, Mario. We all need it. Everyone knows you do so much for them already."
He then leaned down and pressed a kiss into Mario's crown.
"As do I."
The gesture was already full of warmth and love alone, but the words were so sincere that Mario almost crumpled there and then.
"Thanks Lu. I think...I'll be happy just taking a couple days off. I hope the princess will be ok with that."
"Maybe I should ask her to come round and keep you company", Luigi smirked.
Mario nearly shoved him off the bed. But it didn't even matter, for their laughter could be heard around the house.

NEW ONE-SHOT FIC EVERYONE!!!!! NEW MARIO ONE-SHOT FOR YOU ANGST FANS TO ENJOY!!!
I made this short Mario writing as a bit of a vent about personal stuff and a movie au/theory. Beware if you read, this will get angsty. 😃
TW tags: violent depections of severe seperation anxiety, trauma, psychogenic pain, panic attack, hyperventilation, and self-blame/self-hatred.
As Mario watched as Luigi left through the door, it was agonizingly slow. Mario was just standing there and filled with worry, unable to do anything.. not even speak or reach out. Suddenly, he felt as if a knife stabbed into his chest. And then another. More and more stab him with more and more force. This wasn't physical, he thought. It was his anxiety. Mario calls out his twin brother's name but he has already been long gone. At that moment he realizes something.. he couldn't breath. He got to focused on his thoughts that he lost contol of his rapid breathing. He starts yelping, screaming, whining and starts pacing at a rapid rate. He steps back and catches his leg on the rug, falling back to the floor. He sits up in terror and starts crawling back with his legs until he hits the bottom of the couch in the living room. Tears well up in his eyes. It felt as if the world was shattering like glass upon his very feet, and all that was left was the very small platform he sat on. He curls himself up into a ball, darting his eyes down to the floor. His chest hurt immensely from such lung overexersion, and he presses both of his hands against his chest as a reflex. He screams, screeching for help at the top of his lungs. He missed his brother and didn't want him hur.. wait, that thought. He was the one who didn't look out for his brother and got him lost anyway. Now he's gonna get hurt without Mario. This was all Mario's fault. His fault, his fault his fault. Suddenly he felt and saw as his arms went limp to his sides. His vision grows blinder. No. No no no no no no no-
"Mario!", a familiar voice screams. "Oh my stars! Breath! Calm down, please!". It was Luigi.
Mario opens his eyes as though it felt like forever. Luigi was sitting down, next to Mario, pressing his gloved hand on Mario's chest. He seemed to have came home in a panic. Mario wasn't sure why, or even why he was doing like this all of a sudden. What caused him to wake up like this? "Shh shh shhhhh..." Luigi consoles. "L-" Mario painfilly hesitates. He couldn't speak either, he still couldn't breath fully. It took a few minutes of silence until Mario could finally breath well again and Luigi finally explains. "I was only gone for 3 minutes! Right when I was about to enter the store, the princess called me to report to me that the neighbor Toads heard you screaming and that she was worr.." Luigi pauses his shaky voice to wipe away the tears that had already started forming, "I.. I thought you were getting killed!". Mario remembers now. Well damn, he scared his brother yet again. You know what?.. he deserves this pain. All of it. "I-.. I hate my-.. se-" Mario mumbles, but is interrupted by Luigi's hugging embrace. "NO! DON'T YOU DARE!", Luigi shrieks. "I do.", Mario achingly denies. "I don't ca-ha-hare! I love you! I-hit's not your fault~!" Luigi sobs. It didn't matter at this point to Mario. He was just so glad Luigi was okay. In the silence broken by Luigi's occasional soft sobs of grief, Mario wondered: Why did he panic? Wasn't he the perfect goody two-shoes? Was something.. wrong?

twilight house fic ch. 1
[A/N: hello! i just wanted to put my writing out into the tumblr world and hopefully reach other fanfic writers!! plz enjoy this first chapter of my ongoing super mario fic, which is currently untitled, but there's ghosts, intrigue, cultist stuff, the works!!!]
It was just a house in the woods.
Unlike the haunted mansion he’d recently cleansed and fixed up, Luigi had known of the Twilight House since before he’d lived in the Mushroom Kingdom. Back in Brooklyn, New York, the Twilight House was the thing of children’s storybooks—not unlike the Mushroom Kingdom itself. But Luigi had seen the Kingdom, knew the castle’s corridors like the veins in his pale hands—and now, towering above him, stood the Twilight House. Most of the windows were shattered and vines twisted through its wooden frame. Various mosses grew along the foundation.
“Ready?” a delicate voice asked him from his side.
“Jesus—” Luigi jumped, already feeling spooked by the House’s atmosphere. The woman beside him chuckled and placed a reassuring hand on his arm. Dressed in leggings and a baggy T-shirt, she didn’t look like the Princess, but rather she looked like Sapphire—like her true self. Luigi felt soothed by her touch and her presence and allowed his shoulders to relax.
“Sorry,” he said. “Y-yeah, I think I’m ready.”
“Ready as we’ll ever be, right?” Sapphire winked at him, a smile on her lips.
Every conceivable terrifying assumption about what was in the house flooded Luigi’s mind.
“Right,” he said, doing his best to return Sapphire’s smile.
Luigi and Sapphire both grabbed their flashlights from their utility belts and clicked them on. They exchanged a glance tinged with nerves.
“All right,” Sapphire said, stepping ahead of Luigi onto the first porch step. It groaned under her weight—Luigi wondered when the last time was that anyone had stepped there.
Sapphire reached the porch and motioned for Luigi to follow her; he quickly ascended the steps and crept closely behind her, his head on a swivel.
The porch had once wrapped around the entire house, Luigi could tell, but termites or some other critters had eaten away most of it, so that the other part of the porch was inaccessible from both sides. Luigi supposed they were lucky the front door wasn’t blocked, somehow, though he felt rather the opposite of lucky in that moment. The hand holding the flashlight trembled; Luigi fought to keep it to a minimum.
In front of him, Sapphire took in a breath.
“Okay,” she said through the exhale, and nudged the front door with her shoulder. The rusty hinges clattered to the ground in pieces and the door fell to the ground with a thud!
Luigi caught Sapphire’s arm just in time to save her from falling inside with the door.
“Are you okay?” he asked her, his voice unsteady.
Sapphire grunted and squared her shoulders, wincing.
“Yeah, but the arm you caught is gonna be sore tomorrow, I bet,” she said. “But I’d rather that than a face full of splinters from the damn door.”
Luigi chuckled softly, unable to hide the lump of fear in his throat.
Sapphire turned to him, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Lu, you really don’t have to come with me—I mean, I still wouldn’t go alone, but I could ask Mario or—”
Luigi thought of losing his brother again, let alone in another spooky house, and his spine straightened.
“No,” he said. “No, I…really need to do this.”
Sapphire hummed sympathetically, then let go of his shoulder.
“Just say the word, though, and we can leave. Promise.”
Luigi nodded, and she smiled. She turned back to the doorframe, peering into the blackness of the Twilight House.
“Right, then,” Sapphire said, aiming her flashlight inside. “Let’s get going.”

Luigi frowned as he inspected the bookshelf before him, holding his breath as he dusted off the spines with his gloved fingers. Each book appeared to be leather-bound, the words on each spine inked in a script Luigi didn’t recognize.
“Saph?” Luigi called over his shoulder. He didn’t move his gaze from the shelf; a floor-to-ceiling piece, each shelf filled to bursting with knowledge.
Sapphire appeared beside him within seconds, eyes sparkling. “Oh! Books? Hell yes! What language?”
“Not sure.” Luigi pulled one volume out from the shelf at his eye level and handed it to her. “What do you think?”
“Hmm.” Sapphire took the book and shone her flashlight on it, carefully turning it over in her grasp to catch different angles in the light.
“Something about this seems familiar,” she murmured. “Do you think I could open it if I’m careful?”
Luigi shook his head. “Remember, we’re here to collect. We’ll analyze what we collect when we get back to the lab.”
Sapphire huffed. “You’re right,” she said, kneeling to place the volume in her backpack. “Damn you and your overactive left brain…”
Luigi chuckled, his shoulders relaxing a little. Exploring and collecting with Sapphire always felt like something akin to coming home.
Sapphire had just stood up when she furrowed her brow. “It’s…brighter in here.”
Luigi looked around the room—sure enough, he could see parts of it that he wasn’t shining his flashlight on. “What…”
“Look!” Sapphire whispered.
Luigi followed her finger’s direction until his gaze landed on…
“The bookshelf?” Luigi said, perplexed. Either he had lost his mind, or there was a soft glow emitting from the old wood, from the aged books. He’d been staring at it for a long moment when he noticed it was getting tough to look at without squinting—was it getting brighter?
“Lu, shield your eyes!” Sapphire confirmed his fear with her command.
Luigi closed his eyes and buried his face in the crook of his elbow. Was this the end, somehow? Was this bookshelf going to bury them both in light so bright it became thick and tangible, like gelatin in the oxygen, to be choked and gagged on until they just…died? Luigi’s throat tightened and he squeezed his eyes shut tighter.
“Okay.” Sapphire’s calm tone directly juxtaposed Luigi’s own internal dialogue. “Okay. You can open your eyes.”
“What?” Luigi asked. He didn’t move.
“I’m serious, open your eyes.”
Luigi reluctantly removed his arm from his face and obliged, expecting to see Sapphire and reeling at what he saw instead.
A ghost. More specifically, a Boo—and not just any. A being Luigi believed to be King Boo hovered before him, its glowing gaze cast downward at him. A crown forged from dark metal floated above the King, a large purple gemstone seated in its center.
Before he could react, Luigi felt a cold sensation creep up behind him, and when he tried to whirl around, his entire body was stuck in place. A wave of exhaustion hit Luigi like a punch in the stomach. He felt his body relax; he still couldn’t move, but instead of being stuck upright, he fell to the ground in a heap. Luigi didn’t register that he’d hit his head on the way down; everything just went black, all at once.

Bowsario AU fic (No Title cause I’m bad at titles)
Summary: With super powered villains creeping up all over the world, it was obvious for Mario that he wanted to get into the hero business. Most other heroes had powers of their own, too, but Mario would just have to make do with the temporary magic granted to him by the mysterious plants he tended to. What happens, then, when his face strikes fear into not just the villains he fights, but even the civilians he tries to save? How is he meant to be a hero when he's associated with one of the most powerful villains in the world?
Silly little au thing that popped into my brain as soon as I saw this prompt and I had to write it. I didn’t know how to end it so apologies that it just sorta cuts off. Also I hc Mario to be semi verbal, so he doesn’t speak in this. It’s hard to write characters who don’t speak (as someone who talks a lot lmao) so bear with me here,,
***
Mario is easily the most well known hero around here. Sure, he had a rough start being the new guy in a big city, but once he proved his capabilities, everyone would come to him for just about anything. He's an inspiration to all, having graduated top of his class from one of the most prestigious hero academies without any natural born powers at all. Turns out, all you really need is a green thumb and the right kind of seeds. Those "fire flowers" of his can pack just as much a punch as any pyromancer.
"Ready to head out, bro?" Mario smiles as his younger twin throws his arm over his shoulder. Luigi had attended the academy with him and, against all odds, graduated with a score just under his. He always knew his brother could make it with him, even if no one else did, even Luigi himself. The guy doesn't know his own strength, but Mario does. After living in the city for the first few years after graduating, the brothers decided to move back to their hometown. If they were going to make a difference in the world, they wanted to start in the place they call home.
The plane ride was uneventful, and soon enough they're in the airport of their hometown. "Say, you think Peach will remember us?" Luigi asks absently as they wait for their luggage on the conveyor belt. Why wouldn't she, Mario thinks to himself. It's only been six years since they saw her last. If she did forget them, he'd definitely give her an earful about it. Suddenly, they hear a scream.
"Help! Somebody stop him!" A masked Beanish man runs through the airport, carrying a bag as a Toad woman chases after him. She was the one who had screamed before, still calling after him. Easily coming to a conclusion, Mario jumps into action, stopping the Beanish man in his tracks.
"Out of the way, red! No one stops Popple the Shadow Thief!" This guy seems weak enough, so Mario readies to fight him with his bare hands, leaving the fire flowers in his pocket. "Oh, you wanna tussle, ey? Fine then! I'll pummel ya and take whatever ya got, too!" This Popple fellow seemed not to have gotten a good look at Mario's face before, because once he does, he suddenly starts trembling, shrinking back from him.
"W-wait a second, you're–!" He pauses and puts the Toad woman's bag down on the floor slowly, hands up as if trying to appease a wild beast. "S-sorry about this, truly! I-I didn't mean none of what I said to ya, I swear!" And just like that, Popple runs off at an even higher speed than when he was trying to escape the woman in the first place.
Eyebrow raised in confusion, Mario stoops down to pick up the bag and walks it over to its owner. "Oh, thank you so much, kind sir." Mario smiles as she cranes her neck up to look at him, her short stature preventing her from seeing him properly. But the second she sees his face, her eyes widen enough to pop out of her skull and she lets out a terrified squeak, hurrying away from him. Okay, what happened with that thief was odd, but this was even stranger. He had just helped her; why did she look so afraid of him? He turns over to Luigi, who had dragged both their bags over to him.
"Well, that was weird... right?" Still dumbfounded, Mario grabs his bag from Luigi and the two of them make their way out of the airport.
The rest of their short walk to their old home went quite the same as their time in the airport. The second anyone got a good look at Mario's face, they'd run away in terror. "Maybe you'd make a better villain instead, bro!" Luigi jokes as he unlocks the door to their house. Mario knows he means it lightheartedly, but it does get to him a bit. Why was he garnering such a reaction from everyone around him? He hadn't been around for six years, and he was only the kindest and sweetest to everyone before he left. Maybe some bad rumors spread about him while he was gone... But how did that happen?
"Hey, cheer up!" Luigi exclaims, noticing how his "joke" hadn't gone over so well. "Let's go see Peach! She doesn't know we're back in town yet!" He pats Mario's back, and the older twin forces a smile. For a brief moment, he worries that Peach will react the same way as everyone else, but he knows that wouldn't happen. She knows him better than anyone...
One of the upsides about having a best friend who's royalty is that you don't have to put in any effort to remember where they live. After all, how could you miss the giant marble castle standing proudly at the edge of the town? Mario ignores the stares he gets as he and Luigi walk through town and to the front of the castle. The Toad guards in front smile as Luigi approaches, but, like everyone else, freeze up when they see Mario.
"H-halt! Y-you... you can't come in here...!" The guards try to put on brave faces, speaking as firmly as possible, but their trembling voices aren't very convincing.
"Hey hey, easy, pals," Luigi tries, hands out to show he's not a threat. "We're friends of the Princess. Tell her Mario and Luigi are here to see her. She'll vouch for us!"
"Uh, okay, wait here then," the green Toad says, eying the brothers suspiciously.
"No, I wanna go tell her!" the purple Toad whisper-shouts.
"I'll tell her! You stay here!"
"I don't wanna stay here with him!"
"Shut up and deal with it! I'll be right back!" Before the purple Toad could retaliate again, the green one goes into the castle. Mario keeps up a smile as they wait, hoping to calm the purple Toad's nerves, but it doesn't seem to be working. Though it feels like hours pass, it must've only been a few minutes when they hear the Princess's voice on the other side of the door.
"I understand your concern, Toadsworth, but if a villain is polite enough to wait at my door before attacking, I'm willing to hear them out." The door swings open as the Princess, the green Toad guard, and a brown elderly Toad come out, though the elderly Toad immediately slides behind the Princess's dress in fear. "Maybe it's not as bad as it–" She pauses as her eyes fall upon the twins. Again, Mario fears the worst. But then, her mouth spreads into a wide grin, turning up her eyelids and making her cheeks plump.
"Oh my gosh!" She throws her arms around them, pulling them both against her. "Why didn't you tell me you guys were coming back today?! I would've planned something!"
"Nice to see you, too, Princess," Luigi laughs, returning her hug. With all the weird reactions he's been getting lately, Mario is taken aback to actually be receiving a warm welcome. But he smiles sincerely, laughing too, as he squeezes her as tight as he can. Peach loosens her grip on them, turning to look at the green Toad guard.
"Now why would you tell me there was a villain at my door when it was my two best friends I haven't seen in years?" Mario's smile begins to fall hearing that.
"W-well, y'know... On account of his association with... him..." Association with who? So he was right about there being some rumor about him, but what was it and why?
“Uh, Princess… What’s going on?” Luigi asks. “Ever since we arrived, everyone’s been giving Mario weird looks, and what’s this about him being a villain?!”
“News probably hasn’t spread to the city you were studying in. It did happen somewhat recently…” Peach sighs, bringing her hand to her forehead. Then, she smiles brightly, going to stand between the brothers and wrapping her arms in theirs. “Let’s go inside and have a seat. I’ll explain everything. Toadsworth!” The old brown Toad flinches upon hearing his name, still uneasy in Mario’s presence. “Be a dear and prepare us some tea, will you?”
“C-certainly, Your Highness!” The old Toad wastes no time, spinning on his heels and hurrying back inside, eager to make himself scarce. Meanwhile, Peach leads her best friends to the sitting room, which is the first room on the right when entering through the castle’s front door. They sit on the plush dark pink couches, remaining in antsy silence as Toadsworth returns with the requested tea.
Toadsworth’s hands tremble as he pours the tea. Luigi smiles and thanks him and he nods in response, but at Mario’s smile, the old Toad flinches again, nearly dropping the teapot. “Oh, for Stars’ sake, Toadsworth! Get over it!” Peach finally exclaims. “It’s Mario! You know him! He’s been my best friend since we were infants!“
“Y-yes, of course… F-forgive me.” Peach sighs again in exasperation, taking a sip of her tea before continuing to the brothers.
“So, as you might’ve guessed, a lot has happened since you went away to study. Goodness, where to start… Do you guys remember Bowser?” Mario and Luigi exchange unsure glances. “He went to high school with us? He was an exchange student from the Koopa Kingdom.” Again, the brothers exchange looks, before a metaphorical lightbulb goes off in Luigi’s head.
“Oh, right yeah! Remember, bro? He used to always pick fights with you?” That’s when Mario’s memory comes back as well. Bowser, huh… He was a strange guy. From the minute he arrived at the school, he seemed like trouble. He’d always try to insert himself into any situation, like he just had to be the center of attention. He’d even tried to get Peach to go out with him, despite knowing every guy in school had their eyes on her and would most definitely fight him over her.
But by far the strangest thing about him was the fact that he’d keep trying to antagonize Mario somehow. At first, Mario thought it was because he was friends with Peach, but Bowser never targeted Luigi and even after Peach made it clear she wasn’t going to date anyone, he would still try to bother him. At first, he’d really try to pick fist fights with him, but then it started devolving into silly little pranks that an elementary kid would do, like putting a jack-in-the-box in his locker or filling his shoes with candy during gym.
“Yeah, well, after graduation, right after you guys left, he returned to the Koopa Kingdom,” Peach continues. “I don’t know how it happened, but somehow he overthrew the Koopa King and he’s been ruling the kingdom ever since.”
“Uh… good for him…?” Luigi says with a shrug, confusion in his tone and on his face. “But what does he have to do with Mario?”
“He’s also become the most dangerous villain on the continent, and his power is only growing stronger. And after he ascended to the throne, he announced publicly that he’ll kill anyone who tries to hurt Mario.” Both brothers nearly choke on their tea. No wonder everyone thinks Mario is associated with a villain, but why would Bowser go to such lengths? It’s not like they were even friends. If anything, it seemed like Bowser couldn’t even stand being in the same room as him. “Well, he did have that little crush on you in high school, but I didn’t think he’d go this far…” Mario barely registers what the Princess just said, but when he does, his eyes go wide and he freezes up.
It’s obvious that Mario would be surprised about someone he went to school with becoming a powerful villain, but Peach soon realizes that that’s not the only thing that surprises him. “…I take it from your reaction that you didn’t know about his crush, huh?” Mario can only shake his head slowly, eyes still wide. “You knew, right, Luigi?”
“I mean, I didn’t guess it was a crush per se, but I could definitely tell he had some kinda complex goin’ on with my bro.”
“I would’ve said something, but I thought you already knew and were purposefully ignoring all the weird stuff he kept doing to get your attention. In any case, that’s the long and short of it. It didn’t take long for everyone’s perception of you to change. Even if it was clear you were aspiring to become a hero, the second Bowser announced any kind of relation to you, everyone became scared of your return.”
Once he recovers from the shock, Mario’s expression changes to that of determination. He’s going to become a hero no matter what, and his first step from here must be confronting Bowser. He hasn’t seen him in years and he wouldn’t even know what to say, but he has to go clear all of this up. He can’t become a hero if everyone is afraid of even being in his presence. So, he stands up and places his tea cup down on the table. There’s no time to lose. It’s off to the Koopa Kingdom with him.

Don't ask me how, don't ask me why, but I am suddenly struck with the insatiable need to write a fanfic where Mario and Luigi adopt a random semi-feral human kid they found in the woods or something.

It's Mareach time! 🩷❤️✨
Okay, so I'm finally ready to post this! 😁
I'm really sorry for taking too long to translate and post this, but I really hope you guys enjoy it! 💖 As you'll see, it's a very short moment that I first mentioned here, but I think it's pretty cute, so I really felt like sharing it 🤭
This is part of a very long fanfic I'm working on, based on the Super Mario Bros. movie, so there's a lot that has happened previously and there will be a lot to happen afterwards!
Some brief context: Mario and Luigi went to visit the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time after they defeated Bowser with the superstar, and spent the day with Peach. Now they're trying to figure out how to say goodbye to a princess, for they're about to go back to Brooklyn in order to go to work the next day. They still haven't moved to the Mushroom Kingdom, but they're both in love with all the places they've seen so far!
And Mario has something more that he likes in that kingdom... or rather someone 🤭
The whole fanfic is told from Luigi's POV, which means he will witness the birth of the love between his brother and the princess 🤭 Also, you'll find the beginning of Luigi and Peach's friendship, since they'll become besties in my version, and I really hope you like that as well!
In case you find any mistake or something that sounds weird to you, please let me know! English is not my mother tongue, so I can obviously make mistakes 😅 Hope you'll excuse me for that 🙏
And without further ado: Mareach! 🩷❤️✨
Peach offers her hand with a smile, and Luigi wonders if, perhaps, he should kiss it, or bow, or greet her in some other refined way, since he is in the presence of a princess. However, as soon as he grabs the young girl's fingers between his own, Peach begins to wave her hand with a giggle, which causes Luigi to laugh in return as he reciprocates her gesture.
Aware that Mario will be even more eager than he is, given his obvious attraction to the young woman, Luigi steps aside and stands with his back to them so that they can have some privacy. He slowly climbs from one mushroom to the next until he reaches the brick structure from which the pipe emerges and waits beside it. He watches it, curious, but avoids standing right in front of it, for he has already learned his lesson.
Luigi hears Mario’s nervous chuckle and realizes that he too is unsure of the proper procedure for saying goodbye to a princess. He can’t help but take a discreet glance over his shoulder, just in time to see how Peach, in an attempt to make the moment less serious and help his brother relax, also shakes Mario’s hand, whose laughter grows louder.
But when the princess stops moving her arm, neither she nor Mario seem very willing to let go: instead, they remain staring at each other, her slender fingers on his palm, smiles on both of their lips, his eyes enraptured, hers tender.
They remain like that until Mario, daring to take a step that Luigi would definitely call bold, gradually bows his head while raising her arm towards his mouth.
And, without taking his eyes off Peach’s, he lays a soft kiss on her gloved hand.
“See you tomorrow, Princess,” he whispers.
“See you tomorrow, Mario,” replies Peach in the same tone.
And at last, their hands separate.

Since it may be a while before my next fic is posted, here's a little snippet for you all ^^
Content subject to change!

"No", she said at once. "No, we can't separate them!"
She stepped forward but Pio took her by the shoulders.
"Mia, it's going to be alright..."
"No!", cried Mia shaking her head furiously. "They can't be separated!"
"You know Mario can't stay in the hospital..."
"But they can't be without each other!", Mia sobbed. She was hysterical now.
"It won't be for long", Tony assured her. "They won't notice for a bit."
"Luigi will be well looked after at the hospital", Marie said, stroking Mia’s arm.
Oh they didn't understand. Neither of them understood at all.
"Pio!", Mia clung to him desperately. "You saw them when they were just born? How they held onto each other and refused to let go? You remember the second scan, Pio?! They need each other!"
Pio swallowed. He couldn’t bare to see his wife like this. He wanted to take her in his arms and say yes, Mario could come to the hospital. They could camp out in the hospital room, just as a family.
But he also saw the way the other members of the family were staring at them. The hallway felt even more smaller under their gaze.
Pio knew that there was no convincing them, and he hated himself for what he had to do next.
"It'll just be a little while, amore. We'll see Luigi tonight, and then we can just take time to let the family visit during hours, and we can bring him back home. It will all be ok."
Mia stepped back from him.
"I'll stay with Mario here. I need to look after him if he can't come with us."
Her tone was not the passionate emotion from before. It was cold and flat. Pio felt his heart break, for surely hers was splitting at the seams.
As if on cue, Mario started crying from upstairs. Without a word, Mia dashed up the stairs to tend to him, leaving Pio standing in the hallway with the others.
