I wanted to share this cool picture I found in the ebook version of Dawn, at the end of the book.
"Butler with authors Tananarive Due, Jewelle Gomez (standing), Samuel R. Delany, and Steven Barnes (sitting) at Clark Atlanta University’s conference for African American science fiction writers—the first of its kind—in 1997."

I love this picture of Octavia Butler with fellow Black Sci Fi writers in 1997! (I turned 7 years old that year) I wish I was older at the time so I could have been there 😊 It would have been amazing to see these five in the 90s, just writing sci fi and making a way for future Black sci fi writers.
So much talent in one image, wow.

An important book for Black History or just History. 'Get Out: The Complete Annotated Screenplay' by @jordanpeele Published by @inventorypress this 224-page paperback includes an essay by author and scholar @tananarivedue and in-depth annotations by the director. It's richly illustrated with more than 150 stills from the motion picture and presents alternate endings, deleted scenes and an inside look at the concepts and behind-the-scenes production of the film. Continuing in the legacy of 1960s paperbacks that documented the era’s most significant avant-garde films—such as Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon, Jean-Luc Godard’s Masculin/Feminin and Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’Avventura—'Get Out' is an indispensable guide to this pioneering and groundbreaking cinematic work. Read more via linkinbiol #getout #getoutscreenplay #jordanpeele #tananarivedue @monkeypawproductions #blackhorror #blackhistory #screenplay https://www.instagram.com/p/CaSfTnPJNLl/?utm_medium=tumblr

Watch the replay of @TananariveDue discussing #TheReformatory with our CEO/Founder @IsisAsare!!
https://www.instagram.com/tv/Czbeixhpid7/?igshid=NHowamExOGpwN21p
There is an amazing moment when an attendee chats that @StephenKingofficialpage gave The Reformatory a glowing review on @Twitter.
Due also gives writing tips through out the Sistah Scifi Wine Down Wednesday, reads a beautiful excerpt of The Reformatory, and tells us how Due navigated writing the emotionally heavy novel (but we promise the ending is satisfying!)
All preorders of The Reformatory have been shipped! We are currently out of stock, but we ordered more copies from @sagapressbooks and hoping to get more signed bookplates. We hope to be back in stock in two to three weeks. Join our email list for details.
The Reformatory is also available from your local #library, your favorite indie bookstores, @BookShop_org, and @librofm. You can choose Sistah Scifi as you bookstore on BookShop.org and Libro.fm.

✨Book Review✨: The Between by Tananarive Due (@tananarivedue) This book is about a man named Hilton, who as a little boy, experienced 2 extremely stressful situations. Most notably, he experienced a near-death experience, where his grandmother saved his life. In turn, she dies saving him, and now, Hilton believes, the universe is hellbent on making him pay for escaping death when he was a kid. In addition, his wife has received death threats from a white supremacist who is out to get the first Black appointed judge from continuing her career. Hilton then becomes obsessed with protecting his family from these racist attacks, while trying to figure out what is going on with his mental health. There is an unbelievable amount of tension that is at work in Due’s words, that magically pulls you through this book with deftness and curiosity. Due has impeccable writing!! Flawless! You hear me?! Perfect writing! She leaves nothing out! This story gripped me from the very beginning and did not let me go until the end. I consumed this book in 2 days, and I didn’t want it to end at all. Her character development led me to believe that all her characters were real! They were so well-developed, that you can’t tell me these characters don’t exist. This book completely dissolves the line between fantasy and reality, and Due does so in such a way that as a reader, you become lost and question what’s real and what’s not in this book as you go along. Her plot twists, and tense action/thriller scenes make for a great read. Very compelling read, and the writing keeps you guessing to the very end while keeping you on pins and needles all the way through this book. I had slept on Tananarive Due for awhile now. I’ve had her book, My Soul to Keep for such a long time that now after reading The Between, I will be reading her other book. I’m ashamed at myself for waiting this long to read her work. Who else has read Tananarive Due? Thank you to @harperperennial, Netgalley and Tananarive Due for this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. Huzzah!  So happy to announce this! ### "The Path of Pen and Sword" A workshop in creative writing and martial arts with   Steven Barnes WORKSHOP ON SATURDAY, JUNE 5TH, 12-3PM (Pacific Time) IN PERSON OR ON ZOOM The "Twofold Path of Pen and Sword" is also known as   Bun Bu Ryo Do —   "The samurai were successful for so long because they studied both cultural and martial arts. They mastered both the pen and the sword, making them formidable intellectual and military opponents." The Chinese concept of the "Master of the Five Excellences" is looking at the same phenomenon, as is the yogic concept of the "Householder Yogi" who lives in the world of spirit while functioning superbly in the world of flesh. The truth is that there is much in common between the disciplines of creative writing and martial arts: both ask questions about personal identity and the nature of reality. Both demand energy, access to the unconscious mind (Stephen King's "Boys in the basement" or Bruce Lee's "It" as in the quote "I do not strike. IT strikes"), and in studying the one we can deepen our understanding of the other. This workshop, an expansion of the original Lifewriting specifically for writers and martial artists, will use two major tools: Joseph Campbell's structure of the Hero's Journey, and the yogic "chakra" map of human energy, as a launching point for a discussion and workshop delving into the nexus of breath, flow, focus, fear, commitment, and dynamic living. Come play with us!  No previous experience in either writing or martial arts necessary, but all levels welcome. Bring notebooks, loose clothes, and a flexible mind! STEVEN BARNES has published over three million words of fiction, including over thirty novels, episodes of ANDROMEDA, STARGATE SG-1, TWILIGHT ZONE, and THE OUTER LIMITS, including the Emmy-winning episode "A Stitch in Time."  The creator of the Lifewriting system of writing and personal development, he has taught at UCLA and Seattle University, and lectured at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC In the martial arts, he was the Kung-Fu columnist for Black Belt Magazine, holds three black belts, has studied and taught Wu style Tai Chi for forty years, was voted into the Black Karate Federation (BKF) Hall of Fame,  was a senior Kali student under Danny Inosanto, and studied Pentjak Silat Serak under Stevan Plinck for almost ten years. When: Saturday, June 5th, 12 noon-3pm, Pacific Time   On ZOOM: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2461580494 / ID #:  246 158 0494                                                                     Or In Person: Taoist Institute, 10630 Burbank Blvd., North Hollywood, CA 91601                   FEE:  DONATION BASED, with all proceeds going to the Taoist Institute               RSVP: Email: [email protected] / Phone: (818) 760-4219

GoFundMe link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/mystery-force-kids-books-series?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cf+share-flow-1
Last year my friend Macy, who uses a wheelchair and has an animal companion named Destry, approached me with a problem: there weren't enough kids' books featuring kids with disabilities—especially stories where they could see themselves as heroes. After discussion and in the spirit of BEING the change we want to see in the world, we decided: hey, let’s write them ourselves. With Macy as my patient guide and consultant we dreamed up MYSTERY FORCE, a ten-book series featuring three friends who solve mysteries, go adventures, and are generally AWESOME, while living with (and sometimes enhanced by) their disabilities. These are books aimed at primary school age/early readers. The ten stories are COMPLETE. I’ve reached out to the incomparable Suzi Spooner to illustrate the books. As you may guess the visuals for these books will be SO KEY to inclusive representation. So Suzi’s work is the REAL magic here. To that end, even with a generous discount on Suzi’s part because she believes in this project, great artwork takes effort. So we’re raising money to pay for the books. Please visit our GoFundMe page, link in bio. The Good House: Spooktober Book Review
@spookyreadathon @MondayBlogs @TananariveDue #booktwitter @bookbloggershub #spooktoberreadathon #spooktober
Sacajawea, Washington is the setting for The Good House by Tananarive Due. The house belonged to Angela Toussaint’s late grandmother. Everyone called it the Good House for one of several reasons: 1. It was built by a man named Elijah Goode. 2. It was the only house to withstand a mudslide. 3. Everyone loved Angela’s grandmother, Marie Toussaint, who may have been a Voodoo practitioner. Decades…
