Spoilers for Teal Mask ahead. For those cautious, it pertains to the legendaries of the title:

It is insanely powerful to me that Pokemon is addressing the concept of False Idols and Victim Blame with the whole Toxic Trio v Ogerpon conflict.

Not only do the games illuminate how a single peek into someone's life (Ogerpon's probably scary rampage looking for the "Loyal" Three after her friend was killed AND the Toxic Trio "saving" the townspeople) does not mean you know everything about them, or even know a fraction of their struggles (the people of Kitakami assuming that Ogerpon was a monster trying to destroy the town and that the "Loyal" Three was saving them out of benevolence), but they also shed light on how only seeing one half of the story can completely change a situation.

The people of Kitakami aided the Toxic Trio and allowed them to become stronger, which despite the misunderstanding, was still done with the hopes of the "Loyal" Three then going up the mountain to kill Ogerpon.

It's a whole spinning circle where Ogerpon is constantly being beaten down simply because she was different and had something others wanted, which is... a painfully strong metaphor to see shown off in a children's game.

Thankfully, GameFREAK whips it back around by showing that bonds with others can help soothe wounds from situations like this, which is honestly one of the best uses of "the power of friendship" in this whole franchise imo. Ogerpon is apologized to (in a frustratingly flippant way, but I suppose this game is still for children), the "Loyal" Three is exposed as the Toxic Trio and are defeated, and Ogerpon goes on to live a happier life with the player than she would've had ostracized up a mountain.

While I appreciate the whole "Expose the Loyal Three!" bit, I feel like it's a little tone-deaf to have them be so colorful and fun, but I suppose that's me taking the metaphors as the whole pie, when in reality the Pokemon company is still trying to make a marketable, family-friendly experience.

I hope many kids, adolescents, and adults learn a lesson or two from Teal Mask:

Always try to learn about a situation from all sides before praising someone

Never glorify an abuser, nor aid them in their humanity crimes

And try to offer a helping, compassionate hand to people in peril.

With all that said, the end of the DLC felt a little weird too...

Lastly, to address Kieran... God, I hope we can make things up to him in Indigo Disk...
