hello, my friends!  we are skipping ahead in the mix & match requests a little because i refuse to let this event go an entire year without being finished & the historical au has gotten so long that it’s basically just its own thing now asldjfas;df
anyway.  when i originally posted the mix & match event options, i didn’t get a single request for yamato.  :(  when i said as much in a post, however, a few folks reached out with prompts for him including the lovely @whatshernameis who requested Yamato/Forgiveness/Soulmate AU/fem!reader
unfortunately, the original ask was lost in the Great Purge of Lemony’s Ask Box & it’s been so fucking long since the event started that hela probably doesn’t even remember sending it in asldkjfadlsfj.  so y’all will just have to trust me, okay?  great.
Title:  Intertwined Summary:  Tenzo doesn’t even know who he is, so how is someone else supposed to love him?  (Forgiveness: To cease to feel resentment against.) Word Count:  7,233 Warnings:  18+ only, NSFW, fem!reader, fellatio and vaginal sex, some light teasing, references to depression and canon-typical violence .
Tenzo loathed the idea of soulmates.
He was thankful for the gloves he wore in ANBU because it hid the mark on his palm that showed he was destined for another person—intricately intertwined with them through some cosmic universal understanding.  The dark lines scarred into his flesh looked like the roots of two trees tangled together, messy but purposeful: knotted and unbreakable.  When he stared at it too long, sometimes Tenzo’s mind wandered, and he found himself speculating who the mark’s twin might belong to.
But then he shook off the notion.  Because Tenzo didn’t even know who he was; had a name he’d stolen from some other lost boy so he could feel like he belonged somewhere.  He followed orders and wore a mask because it gave him a purpose he would otherwise still be searching for.
When he slept, Tenzo dreamt of a green tube, of wires invading his body, water choking his lungs and clouding his vision.  He woke in a startled sweat, fell to the floor to do push-ups until his shoulders burned and his mind cleared, often only when the day broke across his windows would he free himself of the dark chains of his past.
And it felt too cruel a thing to expect another person to have to live with his dreams, to survive amongst the remnants of the stolen Senju cells that made him who he was.

With how well you write the Squad and how much you made me love their non-existent totally canon bond I couldn't help but think about Shisui, completely tired and wrung dry, pulled thin between the Hokage and his clan, one day just... Letting it all out with the Squad. He can't keep going like this anymore, and besides he already trusts them with his life, so maybe, he thinks, maybe he can trust them with this, too, right?
I just love the idea of the Squad finding out about all the shit going on with Shisui. And maybe Shisui doesn't even ask for their help, he just needed someone to vent to, but they immediately decide that they're going to act in some way to help Shisui
Ohhhhhh now you've done it, anon... My brain is....
AUs of my own AU about dynamics that barely/didn't exist in canon lmao but what about different Whump/angst fics about the squad finding out... Maybe shisui travels back and starts screaming and shit, the squad burst in and it's all horror... What about if shisui came back missing an eye and tried to hide it because it was stolen in the future and his Genjutsu over it fails and omg the EXPLOSION that would happen, the squad would FLIP....what about if Shisui's death happened only for him to come back to life from a fucked up version of Izanagi... What if one of the Squad had demanded answers when they were in the vault... What if Tenzo had pushed for why Shisui's deathly afraid of the Naka.... What about nightmares, what if shisui came back and thought it was a Genjutsu or the afterlife and scared the fuck out of the squad ...ohhhhhhh

28 - Tenzo/Kakashi
a kiss ... as a lie.
anon i hope you enjoy this angst you made me write so late in the day!!
Kakashi-senpai has started the habit of coming to visit him at night, mostly when he feels anxious or depressed or lonely and carves someone - anyone- to touch him and praise him in this certain way he could never praise himself.
For a long time Tenzou was not the person that was visited for these moments. Too young, too inexperienced, too close to Kakashi maybe in feelings and understanding and friendship, but eventually Kakashi changed his mind.
Tenzou does not know why it started, but it did and now he is stuck in an endless cycle of fixing the man he loves just to see him fall apart again, then to fix him again. Kakashi needs endless maintenance to keep the machine running. He can’t afford to be broken.
The problem is that Tenzou in many ways wants this to be more than just the fix. He wants to be more than just a means to an end. He doesn’t expect Kakashi to immediately love him back, but he wishes that they could at least try to be together for real anyway. If it ends in disaster, at least they tried.
“I don’t think I can continue this,” Tenzou says one night, turning away from Kakashi as he dresses up back into his casual clothes. “It is not what I want.” He has never articulated it so clear before, but as soon as the words are out he knows they are truthful.
Kakashi sits down on the bed next to him, Tenzou can feel the weight pull the mattress down. He does not look back, stays with his face towards the wall and waits.
“What do you want?” Kakashi asks, his voice echoing in Tenzou’s mind.
All of you  he almost says, but instead he huffs: “I would like to know you actually care about me more than just - well, more than just some thing you can improve your mood with.” He hadn’t meant to sound as bitter as it does. “I want to -  hang out with you during the daytime too. I want you to sleep over, I want…” His words jumble.
“I don’t do well in relationships,” Kakashi says.
Tenzou already knows this. He pulls the blanket over his shoulder without a word. “Then I can’t do it anymore, I’m sorry.”
He is fully ready for Kakashi to leave now, for whatever this was to be over. Maybe it is better this way.
But Kakashi does not leave. The mattress stays weighed down.
Eventually, he lets out a half sigh. “Fine,” he says. “If that is what you want.”
Tenzou sits up, his heart suddenly almost jumping out of his chest. “Really?” Then, after a short nod by Kakashi: “Can you promise me that?”
Kakashi bites his lower lip a little, but then he leans forward, pushes Tenzou’s chin up and kisses him, soft, almost lovingly. It is different to all the other kisses they’ve had before, less urgent and with lust. Tenzou sighs a little.
He feels too relieved and light to notice that Kakashi’s other hand is cramped together in a fist.

Love me Mercilessly Kakashi x Akami Chapter 21: Reap what you Sow word count: 5.1k warnings: -Implied sexual situations, implied mentions of child abuse, drug trafficking, slavery, etc, Canonical violence, gore, death of minor characters, mentions of trauma, Ptsd Previous Chapters [x]
Akami and Team Ro go on a mission-one of Itachi's lasts
Mayaku–an ex Konoha nin fled from the Village years ago when it was discovered he was selling government secrets during the Third War. Now as rumor had it narcotics could be added to the long list of crimes.
Konoha was tipped off that a large shipment of drugs was to be smuggled during Inaho Village’s Harvest Moon Festival. Inaho was a small Village bordered by Iwagakure and the Land of Waterfalls. While hidden between rolling hills and mountain ranges its secluded location had direct access to the sea.
Konohagakure didn’t care about the drug ring, they only cared that the rat was taken care of. Team Ro’s mission was to return Mayaku to the Village…one way or another.
After claiming the last shower Akami threw herself on top of the mattress, slapping Kakashi in the process. She groaned in relief, as the mattress bounced. The best part about undercover missions was getting to stay at an Inn. Team Ro would be playing the part of a vacationing family. To keep up the ruse they rented a single room with two beds. Kakashi and Akami shared one, like they had many restless nights. Tenzo and Itachi shared the other, grateful they weren't sleeping on the ground like they had on their voyage here.
The festival didn’t start until midday so they got to sleep in. Akami was out cold, face down in the pillow. The weight of Kakashi’s arm thrown over her back was grounding—until he got up and used her for leverage, digging his elbow in her spine. She whipped a pillow at his head.
They wolfed down the Inn’s shitty–yet complementary–breakfast and perfected their henge’s.
Akami softened her bone structure, slimming her jaw and rounding her nose. She turned her eyes a cool shade of black and made her wild hair pin straight. Kakashi traded his electric silver hair for a mop of mousey brown. Concealing his scar and shifting his eyes to a soft green. Tenzo and Itachi modeled their own disguises off of their would-be parents.
Team Ro attended the festival like every other wholesome family. Children were running rampant as people flooded the streets; vendors, yati and games around every corner.
Akami had her arm looped through Kakashi’s as they walked around the festival, Anbu masks concealed beneath second hand kimonos. Itachi and Tenzo blended in seamlessly with large gaggles of kids playing games and eating sweets.
Kakashi spotted a yakitori stand and dragged Akami towards the yati while they worked recon. He kept glancing at her oddly as they waited in line. She tried her hardest to deduce the secret message behind his stares but he wasn’t using a code she knew. Finally she furrowed her brow enough for him to understand her unsaid ‘what?’
He leaned in so no one else could hear and whispered, “I like your eyes better.”
Akami shielded her smile behind the decorative crane fan she purchased. She reached forward to poke the beauty mark beneath his lip with her thumb. It amused her that he kept it visible through the henge. She teased him once, that the sole purpose of the mask was to hide that one single imperfection. She’d never tell him how endearing she thought it was.
Kakashi paid for the big beautiful glistening sauce soaked chicken skewer, handing it to a practically drooling Akami. They posted up against a large tent filled with people eating and drinking and more importantly gossiping. Akami plucked a piece of chicken from the skewer and popped it into her mouth, humming in satisfaction. Kakashi snorted at her as he kept his eyes on the tent as they eavesdropped. She looked over his shoulder scanning the crowd passing behind him. She tore off another piece and raised it to his mouth. He smirked, ate the yakitori and very purposefully nibbled her finger.
Akami pulled back her hand and pouted at it–then at him. He copied her expression, drooping his bottom lip and grabbed her finger to give it a light peck.
“All better?” He asked with a mocking tone. At that Akami could not help but overplay her minuscule affliction, she dramatically stuck out her lip and dolefully shook her head.
Kakashi took her hand again, carefully inspecting her finger, turning it over with concern. He slowly brought it to his lips and watched her as he kissed it again, even beneath the henge he would have sworn he saw her iridescent eyes glow.
Akami didn’t think she’d be able to get away with hiding behind the fan a second time. She chewed on the inside of her cheek and pursed her lips to stifle her brewing smile. Wondering if he’d ever look at her like this with mismatched eyes and gravity defying hair. Then she watched him find something else in the crowd and he dropped their theatrics along with her hand.
She took a bite of chicken straight from the skewer waiting for a reaction, his cue to make a move. He only stared over her shoulder, furrowing his brow and inhaling the air.
“Do we need to track down some sake ?” She asked.
“Yes dear, I think so.”
Akami reluctantly deposited the remainder of her skewer in the garbage as she followed Kakashi’s lead, tracking a man pushing a large wheelbarrow—its contents concealed by a tarp.
When they turned the corner it hit her--A sickly sweet scent akin to maple syrup and a pungent floral odor, like an elderly woman wearing too much perfume.
Street performers spitting fire and swinging torches impeded their pursuit. They got lost in the confusion and the smoke of the fire was too distracting for even Kakashi. They were turning in circles until Kakashi spotted a wheelbarrow.
They followed the man to the edge of the northeast gate. Akami dragged Kakashi to hide beside a merchant’s tent and they watched on bated breath as the man with the wheelbarrow spoke with other vendors. He pulled back the tarp only to reveal fireworks for the end of the night's festivities. They lost him…
Kakashi tried again to pick up the scent.
“Opium.” Akami whispered. Confirming she had come to a similar conclusion.
“Smelled like sulfur and something damp like mold too.” Her sense of smell was decent but nothing compared to Kakashi’s.
She hummed as they stared out at the dark streets, Villagers passed by making their way through the gates. The mountains were steep but seemed so close from the far side of the festival.
“You think he's here then? In the mountains.”
Kakashi nodded and turned back.

Hi Ray, while scrolling through your fic rec tag I realized I do have some fics that are my favourite that haven’t been mentioned yet.
These are all Naruto fics.
to heal a wound
This is one of those rare well written fics where Tsunade takes Naruto as her apprentice even before he is done with academy. The Tsunade-Naruto angst is top notch.
Love On Your Skin
Shisui/FemNaruto Soulmate AU. It’s one of my absolute favorites. Tiny smol Naruto writes on her skin so that she can befriend her soulmate. Apart from how adorable both these disasters are, I love, love, the friendship between Ino, Sakura and Naruto.
On Becoming a Sensei (AKA - How to Ruin a Life)
This has Tenzo panicking something fierce over getting his senpai’s Genin team. Its hilarious.
The Warrior & The Wolf
Its an HP x Naruto crossover where Kakashi is reincarnated as son of Sirius Black. Its a Kakashi/FemHarry pairing.
Beginners Luck
It’s a Modern Day Itachi/FemNaruto fic where Naruto has decided (as a kid) that she was going to marry Itachi when they grow up and spends the entire fic pursuing him relentlessly with Shisui and Izumi cheering for her from sidelines.
The Roots That Nourish the Trees
Post Mizuki betrayal, Danzo devices a series of test for the genin students who passed to gauge the damage Mizuki did and have an accurate database of them. This is one of those few fics where I've enjoyed Danzo’s character. Its all about detailed character analysis of Rookie 9.
Brother To You
Just wholesome slice of life series where post-massacre Sasuke ends up living with Naruto and they learn how to build a live together.

Pregnancy Yamato x Alpha!reader Part 1
Yamato finds out he's pregnant despite the damage done to him because of the experiments.
Part 2
Warnings: Angst, mentions of miscarriage
Tumblr media
Yamato and you didn't even think he was capable of getting pregnant when the two of you find out he's pregnant after being bonded for years. He takes a test you get from the store after being sick for weeks. It's surprising and the two of you aren't prepared for kids. When he gets his first appointment and finds out it's twins it's even more overwhelming. You're terrified for Yamato because it's a high-risk pregnancy and very dangerous but Yamato really wants the babies and is scared of losing them.
“I can't look…” Yamato bit his lip nervously as the timer went off. He had been getting sick for the past few weeks and he finally decided to get a pregnancy test. Due to the experiments, the two of you had been told it was unlikely he was capable of getting pregnant and carrying a baby to term, and in the over twelve years you two had been together, he lost the pregnancies very early the three times he managed to get pregnant.
“Want me to tell you?” You ask, squeezing his shoulder. He nodded. You pulled him close and rubbed his back. “It's positive… what do you want to do?”
“Just wait…” Yamato said softly. “I’m going to go lay down.”
“Okay, get some rest.” You kissed his forehead as Yamato went to lay down. You spoiled Yamato, letting him rest as the two of you spent the next three weeks on edge. By the end of the third week, Yamato took another pregnancy test.
“You should get checked out,” you said as the two of you lay in bed that night.
“I should wait… I… I don't want to be told that I’m going to lose another baby…” Tenzo held back tears.
“I know, but you shouldn't wait. Do you want me to go with you?” You tried to comfort him.
“Please…”
“Okay, I’ll make an appointment.” you held him close. “Get some rest.”
You got him an appointment for three days later. The day of the appointment, you made Tenzo breakfast and kept him distracted until the appointment. Yamato was given an exam and an ultrasound. You sat next to Yamato holding his hand tightly as both of you sat quietly.
“They look good… Given your history, it’ll be a high-risk pregnancy.” Yamato’s doctor did the ultrasound herself. “I wouldn't get your hopes up just yet, but everything looks fine and you're about 12-13 weeks.”
“They?”
“Ya, twins,” the doctor said cleaning the gell off of Yamato's stomach. “If you want to keep them, we can wait and see what happens.”
“Is it dangerous for Yamato?” you ask. “Is it really possible?”
“There's possible complications but for now he’s healthy and so are the babies. Knowing his history, I doubt he’ll make it to term but you could try to carry them long enough for them to make it.”
“I want to. I want to try at least…” Tenzo was determined as he squeezed your hand.

Time for something else (2/2)
Tumblr media
Summary: Life as an ANBU captain has been eating at your very soul. You had been fortunate to have someone with you in what you first considered a privileged duty, but soon learned to be a perilous hell: Kakashi. The man you had looked up to since the beginning - and grew closer to, the more you learned about him. Yet the lurid schemes of a corrupt village elder might break you, as fighting in a system - for a system - that does nothing but throw bricks at you seems to be your undoing.
One final mission. Just one. Read part 1 here!
Length: 4,300 (part 2) Warnings! Graphic description of violence, body horror, (psychological) torture), suicidal thoughts/mindset (reader is not in a good place; at least in parts of this fic), very angsty but with a happy ending; pining, I mean it, pining, angst, happy ending. But. It gets dark first
My birthday gift to the bestiest, amazingiest, loveliest @kuramakakashi!! Once more all the best to you bestie, may this year just be great all around 💖💖💖
Read on AO3!
Excerpt below
And now… you were gone.
Gone after having lied to him about your farewell. He should have said something then. Perhaps he had deluded himself into not doing it - because he did not want to accept that.
Because he could not accept that. A world without you in it -
No.
He leaned against your doorframe. Crossing his arms, Kakashi allowed a familiar wave of despair - of helplessness - to wash over him, letting it carry him away.
He needed to find out. What, what had you been doing? You had mentioned visiting Itachi late - an uncommon event; he went to bed early to be around Sasuke as much as possible, usually.
His best lead therefore should be the Uchiha compound.
Kakashi pushed himself off to be on his way - only to find a huffing Tenzo in front of him, having shunshined there. The man reeked of anxiety. He frowned. "Tenzo?"
"Kakashi," he breathed. His eyes were wide. "Y/n, Shisui and Itachi, they-", he broke off, shaking his head.
"Be calm," Kakashi raised a hand, even if it was difficult to keep the urgency out of his voice. "What happened?"
"They found Danzo's Uchiha prison."
Kakashi's gaze widened.
The prison which both of you had suspected to be many things, but least of all a place to just hold the convicted Uchiha.
You, who had been breaking under the injustice of one individual such as Danzo running free while families had been torn apart by his politics.
You, served with a chance to get evidence for his crimes.
You - who had this blissful peace around you when you had hugged him.
The farewell.
A proverbial bucket of ice water had been emptied over Kakashi. He was drenched in cold sweat.
"Tenzo. Lead me there. Right now."
He could not bear the thought of losing you, indeed.
Kakashi Hatake would not be too late.

Oh God the angst is delicious today but poor Tenzō, I hope he doesn't actually die 😔
Three immediate thoughts-
The panic of having only a few trusted people with healing skills around if Tenzo went into ROOT-seal-induced cardiac arrest whilst Shisui was close to flat-lining and the horror of having to choose
And
Tsunade being hunted down to heal shisui AND tenzo and then her having a moral dilemma of 'this is an innocent' vs 'this is walking bloodline thievery' in the middle of saving Tenzo's life
And
One of them waking up and realising the other isn't there 🥹🤌

Love me Mercilessly Kakashi x Akami Chapter 19: This and That Word count: 4.2k Warnings: violence, mentions of injury Previous Chapters [x]
After getting severely injured on a mission to The Land of This Akami is stripped of her position as Captain and she begins to wonder if Danzo had even planned for her to return at all...
Akami woke one afternoon to find Danzo standing over her hospital bed, Boar by his side.
“You were supposed to investigate, not engage.” Danzo spat.
“They engaged first, wherever you got your intel you were incorrect.” Akami said, wincing as she forced herself to sit up on her elbows.
“You dare question my sources.”
The question was rhetorical, his way of putting an end to their conversation. He wouldn’t give her more and frankly it didn’t matter, he didn’t trust her. Well that was fine she didn’t trust him either.
“I am Anbu Commander, best you not forget that again, snake .” Danzo said, leaving the room. Boar lingered for a moment longer and she could hear the shit eating grin smeared across his face even beneath his Anbu mask.
Danzo should have known she’d slither her way back–Akami was more like her father than she would have liked. Always up for a challenge, she was far more intelligent than he wanted to give her credit for. Danzo gave her a small taste of power and it seemed authority suited her quite well, too well. Danzo didn’t like it when Akami requested to train the new recruits herself. Danzo didn’t like that she questioned him in front of others. She’d be a loss sure, but that phony title he dangled over her head was getting to her.
Danzo thought sending her to Kiri to assassinate one of their own would send a clear message.
He called the shots, his word was law.
He could afford to lose a couple more if it meant neutralizing a threat. She knew too much. Danzo sent her with a team of four. He couldn’t believe that she returned and with another man taking up space in a hospital bed next door no less.
Both she and Orochimaru were more like a couple of cockroaches. They just wouldn’t die.
Akami was this broken damaged person (like many other operatives) but her will to live was too strong. Danzo valued strength and what it could do for him. What he didn’t need was for someone to be stronger than him. He had helped to make her powerful; had she grown up under his control alone with no other influences than perhaps it wouldn’t have been a problem. She existed too much. He would never be able to completely isolate her. Minato had made sure of that.
Yes! That was the problem–why Akami was so defiant. He didn’t build her alone. He wasn’t the one to break her.
He needed to start them younger. He needed to find lonely, empty children, and war had left so many orphans. He needed to dispel their individuality earlier. Akami had seen too much of the world, she had people looking out for her. People knew who she was, her sudden disappearance would not go unnoticed. Orochimaru's daughter missing.
He needed no-name children with no families, no place to belong. He needed to be the one to break them, and piece them back together just as he pleased.
At first he had considered this all to be a waste but in fact she had inspired him to strengthen Root–she was just the start; he needed to build his own foundations.

Forest Picnic
Happy Birthday Kakashi, you old hag! I love you very much in many aspects and as such, you get some fluff for the day. There will be enough angst other days :D
Team 7 Gen fic.
no warnings, just fluff and family feels.
3520 words.
Ao3 Link [x]
for @kakashiweek Day 5: Kakashi's Birthday.
The clock was ticking steadily forward, indicating the never ending stream of time. Kakashi watched with one of his eyes open lazily. He was laying on his side, the blanket pulled high over his nose. He had gone to bed hours ago, but then found no sleep. There was this part of him that knew he’d not have any sleep that night, he never did, not this specific one, but he had hoped it anyway.
Slowly, as if time was hesitating just as much as Kakashi was, the number 59 bled over into a double 00 and with it the little date at the bottom exchanged the 4 with a 5. The 15th of September. It was now officially his birthday.
He groaned.
It was not like Kakashi hated birthdays. He didn’t generally hate the concept of the event. He loved seeing friends get excited about presents he had bought them, he loved the food (if not the cakes) and the good company and the general cheerfulness. He liked the idea that there were humans out there that loved being alive so much that they celebrated it. He loved celebrating it with them.
But for himself? As a child of course he had loved the day, mid september, leaves slowly turning yellow and red with autumn coming in, when his father had given him a new special sword, or kunai or shuriken or taken him out for a special day somewhere. Back when he was still the innocent child he could now only see in pictures. That was before his father had died.
Afterwards, especially after Obito’s and Rin’s death, Kakashi had only used his birthday as a moment to remind himself of the years he was spending alive when he should be dead. Each one marked twelve more months of him surviving when he shouldn’t have survived. And while, eventually, with help of Tenzo and Gai, Asuma and others, he had started at least tolerating his birthday again, he still didn’t like it.
In some ways, it made it even worse, the well meaning friends around him. They were so hellbent on making his birthday a success lately, that Kakashi just wanted to hide from them almost as much as he wanted to hide from the day itself. He loved them, of course, for their best efforts, but he sometimes felt uncomfortable with all their forced cheer.
Now that he was Hokage, he could only imagine it would get even worse. More people that wanted to spend the day with him, force their excitement on him, buy him sweets and try to make him smile inorganically. Too much for him. He liked the solitude, not complete solitude of course, some people were allowed in his vicinity even if he wanted to be alone. Tenzo, Gai, his students. Not many others.
So he turned away from watching the clock mercilessly forward. The first minutes of his 33rd life year had come and gone without being remarkable. Now that the day was here it should be easy to find sleep, he thought and pulled the blanket even higher over his face. If he could just sleep through this entire day, he would, but unfortunately there was work to be done in the morning.
***
Of course, he overslept. No, Kakashi had not fallen asleep right after he had decided to listen to his ticking alarm clock, instead, he had lain awake and thought of the last year of his life that had just passed by. How he had just turned 31 right before the war, Obito’s reappearance and demise, the threat of Kaguya that nobody had seen coming, his new Hokage duties and everything. It was a lot, really. A year of his life that felt like it had been at least five.
So he had missed his alarm and woken up late. This wasn’t a tragedy in itself, as Kakashi was often late and didn’t regard it necessary to start meetings on time if there were other things to do. The council knew this, they had known it when they made him Hokage, but Shikamaru, who now served as Kakashi’s closest advisor, hated it.
The alarm clock now placed next to his bed was therefore a gift from him for Kakashi’s official Hokage ceremony day. “Try to be more on time, Lord Sixth,” he had said sarcastically. Kakashi had stopped himself from commenting sarcastically back on how many of the “private strategy sessions” the boy needed to have weekly with the ambassador of Suna. They were just kids after all, no matter how much responsibility was given to him.
Kakashi put on his new, black outfit that still needed some getting used to after the years of blues and greens and made his way out the door. He didn’t particularly hurry now either. His first appointment was a council meeting with the elders of the village and there really wasn’t anything in this world that could be more boring, so missing part of that didn’t seem too bad.
Was he being watched by the people on the streets? Kakashi felt half paranoid walking the streets, half expecting someone to run up to him and congratulating him on his birthday. He felt like all eyes were on him, but each time he turned, nobody was actually looking.
The hokage tower was almost empty when Kakashi arrived. Only the distant sound of low mumbling told him that behind the closed doors people were actually working. Nobody was out in the hallways though and so Kakashi made his way to his office.
He had half expected Gai to show up while he was out. Jumping out of a bush or from a rooftop to give his greetings to Kakashi on his special day. But then he reminded himself that Gai, while still very agile despite everything, was in a wheelchair now and not able to jump from rooftops anymore. Something else Kakashi still needed to get used to. Still, it was odd that Gai hadn’t found a way to meet him outside if he knew that Kakashi was going to be busy for the entire day afterwards.
When he opened the door to his office, Shikamaru wasn’t there. It was rare that Kakashi came late and his assistant wasn’t already there waiting impatiently, but today it at least seemed to make a little sense. Shikamaru had probably gone ahead to the elder meeting without him, maybe to apologise for the fact that the Hokage himself was late again. There was no card or cake or flowers on his table. Kakashi sighed with a little relief. Maybe people had just forgotten his birthday. He certainly didn’t mind.
He was halfway into turning around to leave for the meeting when someone behind him threw a blindfold over his eyes. Unprecedented times of peace had made Kakashi a little careless and now he was facing the consequences of that. His hand tensed in the direction of his weapon pouch but then a voice spoke into his ear.
“Don’t resist, Kakashi-sensei, or there will be severe consequences.” Naruto, Kakashi thought, in a very non-menacing menace voice.
Kakashi straightened his shoulders, but Naruto held him steady. When his students had grown up to be so strong and tall was beyond him, but apparently he could not defend himself against them anymore. “What are you doing, Naruto? Let me go.”
Naruto laughed. “Just come with me quietly, sensei, and nobody will get hurt.” Kakashi laughed too. Naruto really needed to work on his threatening voice if he wanted to be Hokage himself someday.
“Fine,” Kakashi resigned. Naruto pulled him by the arm backwards and Kakashi stumbled with him. The blindfold really was laid tightly around his eyes and he couldn’t see a thing. He expected at any moment to fall over his feet and break a leg or anything.
Soon they were out in the hallways. Kakashi knew by the distant mumbling. “Are you aware that I should be in a meeting?” Kakashi tried. “Shikamaru won’t be happy if I don’t turn up.”
Naruto blew air out from his nose: “Who cares.”
Who did indeed. No place Naruto could take him was worse than a two hour meeting with the elders of this village and their outdated views. In many ways, Naruto was doing him a favour. Kakashi relaxed.
He didn’t say anything from then on and just let Naruto lead the way. Kakashi suspected this was some sort of punishment his students had thought up, a prank, possibly to demask him. Sasuke had been released from prison not so long ago and was about to leave for his travels and so they wanted to make one last hurrah to annoy their old teacher before they all embarked into adulthood. At least that seemed entirely plausible for them.
Eventually he could smell trees. He was pretty sure they’d left through the back gate of the village as Kakashi had briefly caught the scent of the sweet pan bakery that was not far from it to the left. On the way Naruto sometimes said “Oh no, this is fine” and “Don’t worry he has agreed to come with me” presumably to get people to stop staring. Naruto was now this village’s hero, so he could have told them anything and they’d probably believed him.
“Almost there,” Naruto said and Kakashi could hear his grin without seeing it. Mentally he wondered if there was a replacement mask in his top pocket, like it so often was, or if he had forgotten it. He tapped his finger at the right place and felt the fabric underneath. Very good, he thought, he might need it after all.
Finally Naruto forced Kakashi to a stop. He fiddled on the blindfold behind his back. Kakashi could clearly hear grass shuffling and felt people breathing. His theory that Team 7 was going to try to unmask him one last time before leaving on their own adventures, seemed very high.
“Ta-da!” Naruto said and dropped the blindfold.
Kakashi had been right in thinking that this was a Team 7 idea. Certainly, the entire group was assembled right in front of him. Even Sasuke was there, though he leaned against a tree a little apart from the rest. He had also been right that they had kidnapped him to bring him to the forest. Just that the cause apparently was not to unmask him as a prank, but for his birthday.
There was a table, flat and dark wood, that could only have been made by Tenzo’s hand. Placed on it were several cups with a little sake, most of them had passed that point of being 18 now, and a surprising amount of rice balls. One of them even had a little candle stuck inside. This was the oddest combination of things he had ever seen. Kakashi frowned in confusion.
“See, Naruto, I told you senpai would not like being dragged out here,” Tenzo said with an eye roll. “If we had invited him it would have been much easier to get him here and it would have looked less violent.”
Naruto waved the concern away with one flick of his hand: “Nonsense, Kakashi-sensei is just overwhelmed. Sometimes he can’t say what is on his mind right.”
With that, surprisingly, Naruto was entirely correct. Kakashi and Tenzo exchanged a look that indicated that Tenzo, too, knew that.
“Anyway,” Sakura stepped forward and moved Naruto out of the way with her flat hand. “This was Naruto’s idea. We didn’t all agree to it, really. I did tell him the idea wasn’t funny.” Kakashi raised his brow a little. There was a smirk in the left side of her mouth indicating that she did, in fact, think it was a funny idea. “Happy Birthday, Sensei.” She smiled.
They all joined in wishing Kakashi a happy birthday. He was a little embarrassed going around and getting a hug from all of them, even Sai and Tenzo and was a little relieved when Sasuke only offered his hand. It was easier than being hugged so tightly he could feel his bones crushing when Naruto hugged him.
“Did you tell Shikamaru I would be here? Or did you just kidnapped me,” Kakashi asked as they were all sitting down around the table. There were exactly 32 rice cakes on the table, each with a little candle in it. It looked goofy, but Kakashi appreciated that they weren’t forcing him to eat a cake just for the occasion.
Sai put on a smile: “He was told, otherwise I’m sure he would have figured it out on his own. He knows that Naruto doesn’t have the ball capacity to kidnap the hokage.”
“Hey!” said Naruto from the other end of the table.
Tenzo, who sat at Kakashi’s right, tapped with his fingers onto the plate in front of him. “LIke I said before, I told them to just invite you properly out here. Give you the option to move your meeting instead of missing it completely, but Naruto thought this was better and nobody had the strength to convince him otherwise.”
Naruto smiled wide as if he was proud of that fact. Kakashi nodded appreciatively at him: “I didn’t really want to see the old hags anyway, to be honest, so this is perfect. I also have an excuse later.” He chuckled a little thinking of how he would later point fingers to Naruto and say it was all his fault.
“Well, sensei, this is your … cake… because we know how much you hate sweet things,” Sakura gestured down the rice cakes. Last year they had tried to give him a little pastry, nothing too big, but Kakashi had ended up giving half to Naruto and half to Gai and not eating any of it. His sensitive tongue couldn’t deal with sweet things that well.
The solution they had come up with this year was unorthodox, but fun and Kakashi couldn’t help but feel proud of the entire team together. Not only had they managed to organise this without his knowledge, they had also all assembled together to spend the afternoon with him. There was really nothing better for him to do on his birthday.
“It looks delicious,” he said with a smile aimed at Sakura. “There are so many of them though, so you will have to help me eat them.” With a wave of his hand he invited the others to join in the feast.
For a while they just ate and Kakashi listened to their conversations. Naruto was mostly complaining that a birthday was not complete without cake and that this stuff just didn’t fit, to which Sakura wasn’t tired to remind him that Kakashi liked “this stuff”. Sai talked to the ever so quiet Sasuke and informed him about the months that followed the war, the time he had spent in prison, and how the village had developed since then. Though Sasuke remained wordless, Kakashi couldn’t shake the feeling that he was listening intently anyway. Tenzo ate as quietly, listening to the kids talk as much as Kakashi was.
Eventually, most of the food had been consumed. Naruto hoarded the rest of it, because while he had been complaining relentlessly, he had still enjoyed eating it all. Tenzo brought out a sake bottle from somewhere and offered it. Kakashi usually didn’t drink much alcohol, not always at least, but today, in this company, it seemed to be necessary.
They lifted their cups together, ready to put them together and then drink. Kakashi looked into the round of people.
Sakura spoke first, “To Kakashi-sensei, the teacher who taught me how to use chakra effectively enough to become the doctor I am today. Who never stopped believing that I could be exactly as useful as my teammates in many ways. Who I also wish wouldn’t be such a pervert in public all the time.”
Kakashi laughed and went: “I’m not apologising for my icha book. But thank you.” He wanted to lift his cup higher and finally drink it, but then the next person spoke.
“To kakashi-sensei,” it was Sai, “Who believed I was a trustful person, when I didn’t know if I was or not. Though you had never taught me, you entrusted me with the important sealing part in the war. Now, as hokage, you trust me enough to lead the investigations into the foundation. I’m really grateful for your continued trust. “
Sai had said the word trust so often that Kakashi’s head spun a little, but he nodded in thanks. The boy smiled and it was a genuine one, which was always so wonderful to see. In many ways Sai reminded Kakashi of a younger version of Tenzo.
“Thank you,” Kakashi said, “to all of y-”
“Happy birthday, senpai,” Tenzo now lifted his cup. Kakashi looked at him and wondered if they had arranged for this to happen. He opened his mouth to ask the question, but Tenzo was faster. “Meeting you changed my life, you might not like to hear that, but it is true. You saved me, took me in, taught me to be your equal. I’m proud to call you my friend and even prouder to be called your friend.”
Kakashi wasn’t good with praise like that being handed to him, especially not from someone like Tenzo, who was generally more drawn back when it came to his emotions. The men nodded at each other and Kakashi held Tenzo’s gaze for just a moment longer, before looking back to his students.
Only Sasuke and Naruto hadn’t said anything yet. Kakashi waited if the round continued or if he was finally set free.
“Kakashi-sensei, is a weird old dude most of the time,” Naruto said suddenly, “When I was younger he’d break into my house and make me throw away old milk, which I thought was odd.” Kakashi laughed, of course he thought it was odd that someone was trying to take care of him. “But Kakashi-sensei is truly one of the coolest people I’ve ever met too. He is so skilled and smart and now he is hokage, so of course he is the strongest too! I admire Kakashi-sensei and am glad he has looked after Team 7 so well. Happy Birthday old man.”
He then added like a mumble: “Can't even imagine being 32, can people even get so old?” which earned him a kick in the shins from Sakura.
“Thank you, Naruto, I don’t think I am much stronger than you are though, Sasuke and you have long since surpassed me. All of you have, in fact.” Kakashi looked from one of the kids to the next and recalled how young they had been back when he had met them first. “I’m happy I had an impact on all of you, thank you for-
“I-”
Everybody’s head snapped back to Sasuke, who had been completely silent the entire afternoon so far. Maybe that was why he had spoken so loud, because he had been worried his voice would drown in those of the others. Kakashi certainly hadn’t expected him to say something. Their eyes crossed.
“Kakashi,” Sasuke tried again and Kakashi noticed again that he had dropped the habit of adding “sensei” to the end of it. “Th-Thank you for never losing your faith in me.”
They looked at each other for a moment. Kakashi knew that was all Sasuke wanted to say. “I did lose my faith a little at some point,” Kakashi felt the need to clarify. Sasuke just shook his head a little and then looked away.
Sakura, clearly uncomfortable with how silent it had gotten, lifted her cup: “Happy Birthday to Kakashi-sensei” and the others followed again. Finally they got to actually drink the beverage.
Kakashi felt a little warm on the inside, the overwhelming urge to pull all of them in the bone crushing hug that he had wanted to reject earlier on. How had he gotten so lucky with such talented and wonderful teammates? How could he have ever gotten as far as he did without them? He was grateful for every moment he got to spend with them together. See them argue and laugh and bicker, what could be better than that?
In the end, this was what he had always wanted for a day like this. A simple picknick in the forest with all the people he cared for in his company. Kakashi put his head on his flat hand and zoned out a little. He still wasn’t entirely used to having both his eyes back.
“I have to warn you though, senpai,” Tenzo was leaning over to him, “Gai-san has told us he will come by later too, for a, and I quote, “Friendly birthday rival battle”. I can only imagine what he means with that.”
He laughed, and Tenzo’s eyes lit up. It was rare that Kakashi laughed as loud and carefree as he did now. He couldn’t help it, he felt lighter and happier than he had all his life.
“Well, I look forward to that then,” Kakashi said with a wink.

Ghost of Tsushima CYOA Part 7
Jin/Tenzo Rated Teen
Link to part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6.
This is the longest part yet I think. And we've got angst. So much glorious angst. I tried to have them talk, but I just don't think Shimura is ready for it, and now Tenzo has derailed Jin's plans. What will Jin do?
Part 7 of the fic and the poll for what happens next are below the cut.
“Ride with me.” Jin demanded.
Shinura scoffed but maintained the illusion. He waved his hand to his retainers, telling them to fall back. They’d tried to rush the gates when Jin spoke.
Jin swallowed his emotions, but they stuck in his throat. His uncle was going to ride with him, and trust him to remain honorable and not lead him into an ambush. Shimura would do all this despite knowing Jin was deliberately using those fateful words that had led him to their last duel, when Shimura had tried to kill him and they’d parted. He—Jin nodded, remained silent, and turned Kaze away from the encampment. He glanced at Tenzo as he rode past, careful not to move his head and give away his friend’s position. Tenzo would be able to sneak away now that he wasn’t needed for cover.
They rode at a relaxed ambling walk, just like what Jin had promised Kaze in those weary days before the Khan’s defeat. Except now it was with his uncle towards an uncertain future. Insects buzzed in the night. Not a human soul stirred aside from the two of them, all Iki’s inhabitants hiding from or otherwise preparing for the second samurai invasion.
Finally, Shimura spoke, “I know it’s you Jin.”
“I didn’t expect you to believe it was Kazumasa.” Jin deliberately said Kazumasa and not ‘my father’. He could feel his uncle’s glare boring into him. “I don’t think I can call him father now that I am no longer of Clan Sakai. Can I, Lord Shimura?” Jin stopped Kaze and waited for Shimur and his horse to come apace.
“Now you’re just being childish, Jin.” His uncle criticized.
“I am being honest. I’ve asked you to ride so we can talk. Just talk! This isn’t going to end with an announcement that this was all some ruse and a duel to the death!” Jin felt his voice rising and his chest shaking with effort. He ripped off his father’s helm to glare at his uncle.
Shimura didn’t have any armor, and his eyes seemed sad when he looked at Jin. “Do you think I had a choice?”
Jin wanted to scream. “There is always a choice,” He spat out in a low even tone. “My father’s killer knew I was there, and chose to spare me because enough blood had been shed.”
“You’re a fool Jin. That man would have killed you without a second thought. Pirates and raiders, they’re all vermin. Use them if you must, but know that they will turn on you give the first opportunity.”
“And what of samurai? Loyal dogs, obedient to their masters even after they’ve been kicked? I am a man uncle, not an animal. The same as any of the people on this island.” Jin turned Kaze to face his uncle head on. Despite being in full armor and physically larger, being here with Shimura made him feel oh so small again.
“You are—you should be better than them.” Shimura shook his head.
Jin sighed wearily. He dismounted and waited for his uncle to do the same. “This isn’t what I wanted to talk about. Come,” He pleaded, “come sit with me.” There were two woven cushions in the clearing nearby. Jin had stopped the horses far enough away they wouldn’t disturb the wildlife. He walked over and sat. He would see this through wether his uncle listened or not. And wasn’t that a running theme in his life now.
Save Tsushima, regardless of his uncle. Live, regardless of his uncle. Love Ryuzo, and Yuna, and Tenzo… oh, he loved Tenzo… regardless of his uncle. And now he’d play his flute, whether his uncle listened of not.
Shimura joined him, after scanning the surrounding underbrush and trees suspiciously, like he believed Jin would lead him into a trap. The distrust stung, but Jin allowed it. He didn’t trust his uncle either, after their last meeting.
Jin took his flute out, pursed his lips, and played. He made sure it was song he knew well, one he’d learned at his mother’s knee, when she’d been ill. He put his entire soul into it, thankful for all the practice he’d gotten here on Iki with Hachibee. The world vanished, for a long and peaceful moment it was just Jin and the sound of his flute. Something warm and small on his lap got his attention and Jin opened his eyes to a small wildcat about to step onto his lap. The made eye contact for a moment, then Jin closed his again and kept playing. By the time his song was done there was a wildcat asleep on his lap, with another curled at his side and a third playing with a loose piece of his armor.
“You’re so much like her,” Shimura sighed. At the sound of his voice the cats scattered.
“Would you have banished her? If she’d done what I did?” Jin couldn’t help but ask. He’d forgiven himself, he’d forgiven his father, but the pain of Shimura ending their relationship was too fresh.
Shimura remained silent.
Jin did as well. He deserved an answer, but knew he’d never receive on if he pushed.
“She wouldn’t,” Shimura finally stated.
“I don’t think you know how stubborn of a woman she could be.” Jin crossed his arms.
“I know exactly how stubborn. I see—I saw it every day with you. You’re so much like your mother, Jin.”
Jin frowned; this wasn’t the conversation he wanted to have either. “I wanted to talk with you.”
“We are talking, Jin.”
“Not about what matters. Not about—” Jin stopped himself. He was raising his voice and if he continued to do so Shimura wouldn’t take a word he said seriously. Jin took a deep steadying breath, he tried to be like Norio and use some of the meditation techniques he’d learned with the monk while recovering in the temple. “I want to know why.”
Shimura quirked an eyebrow smugly. Jin knew he was silently being chastised for not being specific.
“Why did you try to kill me?”
Shimura snorted, like the answer was the most obvious thing. “I did not want to. It was the will of the Shogun.”
“Why did you listen?”
“I am the Jito! It is my duty to obey, as it was yours.”
“What honor is there in killing your only relative?” Jin did raise his voice. The underbrush rustled as cats fled and a larger animal moved through it.
“You know nothing of honor. Ever since Komoda beach you have been different. Willing to break our code as samurai and use whatever tactics necessary.”
“I—”
Say it, Jin. Demand it of me,” Shimura spat bitterly.
“Uncle, I…” Jin was currently confused.
“You’ve said every other word from that damned day. Ask me if I’m ready and we shall fight again. You mock me with my brother in law’s armor, you bring up old painful memories. I was willing to let you die that day but you refuse to remain a ghost. Just end my suffering, Jin.”
Jin reeled like he’d been physically slapped once more. Maybe… maybe this had all been a mistake. Instead of finding healing and closure, his presence was just hurting his uncle.
“This was a mistake,” Jin sighed, “let’s just go back.”
“No,” A familiar voice declared.
“Tenzo?” Jin hastily stood and put himself between his uncle and his friend. “Tenzo don’t do this.”
“The samurai need to leave the island Jin. I can’t just let him go.” Tenzo held his sword at the ready, in a perfect stone stance. Damn Tenzo for being a quick study.
“Jin,” Shimura scolded, “Who is this raider scum?”
“Tell him Jin,” Tenzo smirked, “or I will.”
Jin walked over to Tenzo, heedless of the sword leveled at him, to whisper too quietly for Shimura to hear, “Don’t tell him Tenzo, he will kill you.”
“Jin,” Shimmura demanded, “What is going on. Is this an ambush?”
Tenzo grinned bitterly, “No, I’m—”
