Do you have any gothic novels that you can recommend off the top of your head? Especially to people who want to try their hand at the genre? I've hit a wall in my project and I need to get some fresh inspiration, but I don't know where to start and the book side of tumblr failed me the last time I tried asking them for recs
Hell yeah! I made some old posts for this a while back, but it's good to look at it again with my more recent taste! Let's see...
Classic Gothics
Dracula: The one, the only. Often imitated, never equalled.
Frankenstein: Short, sad and world changing! Can get a little slow at parts, but definitely worth it. (True story, my parents read this to me as a fetus to calm my kicking, so it's part of my personal mythology!)
The Case of Charles Dexter Ward: The most gothic of Lovecraft's work, and possibly my favorite. Novella length, usually found in collections.
The Picture of Dorian Gray: Sinister, sexy, philosophical, with a main character I want to punch in the face!
Carmilla: Another novella, about as lush and swooning as vampire stories get.
The Hound of the Baskervilles: A very readable gothic mystery.
Confessions of a Justified Sinner: This one isn't as action packed, but if you have big religious issues like me, it's incredibly haunting.
The Monk: Like the above, but sleazier and crazier!
Northanger Abbey: A gentle parody of early gothics, starring an adorable proto-goth girl.
The Italian: I'll be honest, I find Anne Radcliffe kind of a slog, but if you liked Northanger Abbey and want to read what Catherine Morland reads, this is probably the most accessible.
A Long Fatal Love Chase: This starts as campy and then takes a plunge into gut-wrenchingly intense. The book Jo March was always trying to write!
The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: Another novella, and Stevenson is one of the best writers out there for excitement!
The Werewolf of Paris: Gothic monster as serial killer, still scary today.
Rebecca: The foundation of all gothic romance to come afterwards. A ghost story without a ghost, with an ending that's still debated as happy or sad!
Jane Eyre: The other foundation of all gothic romance to come afterwards. I bounced off the child abuse-heavy beginning a few times, but I'm very glad I finally read to the good stuff!
The Castle of Otranto: Considered the first gothic novel, a goofy b-movie in written form.
Modern-ish Gothics (post-1950 or so)
The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein: Fuck the haters, I love this book.
Mexican Gothic: Genuinely scary, genuinely romantic, genuinely creative. A favorite.
Blackwater: A southern gothic saga of a family in a flooded town, whose scion marries a woman who isn't quite human. A whirlwind ride!
A Bloodsmoor Romance: Another family saga, this one northern gothic, with sisters whose lives all go off the rails in different supernatural ways. Give this a try before writing Joyce Carol Oates off entirely!
The Silver Devil: A nasty, problematic bodice ripper where you'll cheer for the heroine to bring the hero down low!
Interview with the Vampire: To be honest again, I'm not super into Anne Rice, but this is a page-turner, and every vampire book that has come after it has had to respond to it in one way or another. Read the next two Vampire Chronicles books if you like it!
A Taste of Blood Wine: My own preferred sexy vampire romance!
The Bloody Chamber: The ultimate dark sexy fairy tale work, accept no substitutes.
Haunted Castles: Contains the brilliant novella Sardonicus, as well as some other campy gothic stories!
A Great and Terrible Beauty: Many millennials were introduced to the gothic genre via this, Fear Street Sagas, or A Series of Unfortunate Events. This is my favorite of the three, though the sequels are a bit of a letdown.
Gormenghast: This series is a throwback to the pseudo-medieval, Otranto-style gothic, but much better. Don't read Titus Alone.

SCU (smosh cinematic universe) headcanons:
This is basically me geeking out over fucking smosh sketches of all things (😭) and wanting to try and view it as a coherent story n shit 💀
This is more so me rambling while being lowkey out of it and definetly shouldn’t have let the drafts but hey I’m hoping someone appreciates this idk
Uhh also these aren’t tumblr style headcanons it’s like weird lore shit idk
Most of these aren’t Ianthony sketch ones btw!!
Augustus was fired from Smosh after the events of We Interviewed our Biggest Hater (oct. 2021), where he then got a job working for GameStop which we see in POV: You’ve entered a GameStop (nov. 2021). This head canon is more so just for like putting together a cohesive timeline but anyways
The documentarian from the grimace sketch is the same guy from the totally true documentary series
all the chosen lore shit isn’t bs and actually true because i think it’s way more fun (sorry, know that’s not the popular approach) also the chosen HAS powers in No Nut 2022, which isn’t a sketch I’d want to be canon but oh well 💀
Some of this is rooted in canon but instead of Anthony’s whole leaving smosh saga and all the vids surrounding it, Anthony straight up completely disappears from the public eye and becomes Anthobrie (idk how to spell her name) for 7 years after food battle 2016. Every video where Anthony plays his sketch universe self post fb2016 before he quit in the timeline takes place beforehand, with new Ianthony sketches taking place after fb2023 and after whatever video they make where they reanimate him (honestly I’m predicting fb2024). Anyways to the main headcanon, Anthony straight up left the face of the earth and everyone was like “yeah he quit smosh ig…” until during the first chosen multiverse Courtney’s chosen came and was like “bro he’s fighting laser dolphins in Guam???” Because the Anthony from their universe is doing that and everyone just kinda went with it until fb2023
Pharaoh High, I’mBarly, Lianna Indiana, The Curse Of The Shorts, Dancer @ Singer School, Varsity High and Smosh the Movie (as well as other tv shows and movies acted out in sketches I didn’t say) are canon tv shows and movies within the SCU, with Smosh the movie being acted out by sketch universe Ian and Anthony
fuck it the two paramedics played by Spencer and Tommy in the pregnancy smoffice sketch are married to each other 🥰🥰
The Every Blank Ever vids are canonically sketches played by the sketch universe versions of the cast
Shayne is actually 5’6 😘
Yo feel free to reply n shit disagreeing or whatever I’m real open to other’s views n shit, like for one I don’t even know whether to put Ianthony sketches in the same universe as like smoffice n shit lmao idk too sleep deprived to process anything I said in this post 😍😍

In all honesty, while I do miss Super Saiyan "first times" being emotional beats, a lot of fans forget Goten did it by accident and Trunks did it because he felt like it. Like what, was Goten that angry at Chi Chi during their sparing match? Was Trunks' jealousy of Goten going super saiyan equal to Vegeta's self-loathing during the time skip before the Androids Saga? At least with Caulifla there's an in-universe explanation that honestly makes sense for her character. She's not the type to explode with rage and Cabba's not the type to antagonize her. Rather, she's adept enough at fighting to recognize that all she has to do is emulate the feeling of the transformation to attain it and skilled enough to do it by force. She basically skips the awakening part to get right to the "do it at will" stage which is perfect buildup for her as a rival of sorts for Goku.
I think what really bothered the Caulifla haters (besides their misogyny) was that she said the quiet part out loud.
The dirty little secret about the Super Saiyan form was that it was never this ancient and mystic power of destiny, but a quirk of Saiyan biology that almost anyone could replicate if they knew what steps to follow. The reason Vegeta, Trunks, and Gohan all pulled it off in such a short span of time was that they had a living Super Saiyan as a reference, and they had the motivation to work at it.
By the time Cabba showed up, it was considered a big twist that he couldn't turn Super Saiyan. That's how cliche the form had become. So when Cabba learns it very quickly, it's mostly because we need him to get "caught up" in a hurry. And Caulifla and Kale were even stronger than he was before he learned the form, so it only makes sense that they would get the hang of it quickly as well.
But their transformations weren't treated like this big dramatic moment that turns the tide of the story. That's because Super Saiyan was no longer a major milestone, but also because we'd already seen it done several times by several other characters. The gimmick with Caulifla and Kale was that they were prodigies, diamonds in the rough who were suddenly tapping into their hidden potential. Could they improve enough, quickly enough, to become a threat in the tournament?
The thing fans have to accept is that Super Saiyan isn't the be-all and end-all of this franchise. That's why we have Super Saiyan 2, 3, 4, God, and Blue, along with Ultra Intinct, Beast, and all of the other advanced forms that have cropped up along the way. And the bad guys have always been able to keep pace, so calling each new level "unearned" is pointless.
We could say that Caulifla deconstructed the whole concept, except Vegeta already did it when he first transformed in 1991.
Tumblr media
One page. One page is all it takes to undermine whatever legend or superstition is still attached to the Super Saiyan form. This is the third character we've seen use the form, but Krillin still hung onto the idea that a Super Saiyan had to at least be a good guy. But Vegeta informs him that he simply trained and trained until he hit a wall and his frustration pushed his body over the threshold. But Vegeta still clings to the idea of a "Saiyan Messiah", even though he just demonstrated that there's nothing special about this. You don't need to be a mythical hero, or a man of destiny, or even a nice person. You just need talent and effort, and maybe some luck.
The U6 Saiyans just did a speedrun of Vegeta's process, and that may irritate fans, except that the U6 Saiyans were far, far more powerful than Vegeta was in the Androids Saga. Cabba and Vegeta fought evenly in their base forms, and that was the same "Saiyan Beyond God" level seen in Resurrection F. They were already capable of the transformation; they just needed someone to tell them it was a thing.

2023 in anime
i give ratings out of 10 stars based on a rubric that considers the following:
2 points / ambition of what the anime is trying to achieve 3 points / effectiveness of the anime in achieving its aims 4 points / my personal, subjective enjoyment 1 point / pacing +1/-1 miscellaneous
so with that said… ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (2 anime)
revolutionary girl utena – heavy breathing panting crying what a fucking roller coaster nanami the child you are anty the child you were utena the child you choose to be – just one of the true masterpieces of all anime. took a few episodes to realize that this show understood tone and comedy perfectly and wasn’t just a wonky children’s show and by golly! the nanami in season 3 gutted me unlike anything else
attack on titan: final season (for real this time) – decent conclusion to maybe my favorite anime of all time
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (10 anime)
school rumble – so goddamn funny and i cared about every goddamn character. it’s witchcraft!
trigun – good ole saturday morning cartoons
golden kamuy s3 – how does it keep getting better???!?!
fruits basket – i was a certified hater after s1, but slowly but surely i gave into the melodrama. akito and shigure were EVERYTHING
nana – the most disappointing ending of all time! for one of the greatest anime of all time. manga pls save me!!!
rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai – i’m embarrassed. i cried.
princess tutu – expressionistic, dedicated to storytelling, tremendously kind-hearted. you have to let it move you
blue lock – i’m officially a sports anime girlie
cyberpunk: edgerunners – this was just so slick!
chainsaw man – nothing needs to be said here
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (8 anime)
yamada-kun to lv999 no koi wo suru – adult romance that hasn’t been stripped of all conflict and maintains momentum nearly to the end
oshi no ko – my expectations were non-existent after ep 1 but then it crept up on me. i can’t even fully put my finger on what works so well? but it does! it knows when to take itself seriously and when to be nonsense.
demon slayer s3 – best season of demon slayer to date, i actually cared
durarara!!x2 shou – this is a confession. my inner edgy teen loves durarara. i appreciate huge casts of characters acting in opposition in atmospheric tokyo.
gintama – i finally finished gintama one of my favorites of all time. the end pulls all the threads together but it does so at the expense of the laughs so loses some points
chihayafuru – amazing background anime. just consistently fun and engaging.
perfect blue – i feel stupid and uncultured to not give this a 10
vinland saga – askeladd is so hot wow
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (7 anime)
buddy daddies – funny and sincere in degrees but a truly annoying little girl character
serial experiments lain – god you’ve gotta appreciate the wild swings creatives were taking in the 90s
durarara!!x2 ten
great teacher onizuka – ugh he’s a creep but also heh he’s funny
trigun stampede – they yassified them!
mob psycho 100 s3 - meandered a bit but the characters are forever favorites
to your eternity – the first 3 arcs are extraordinary. march is one of the great child characters of all time. the end drags.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (8 anime)
zom 100 – crazy good first episode that earns its premise and then a slow descent into mediocrity; cool colors though!
terror in resonance – utterly forgettable
dororo – way too long with way too many hit or miss episode arcs
bungou stray dogs s4 – the cracks are showing but the rampo backstory is dope
lycoris recoil – those cute girls shoulda been lesbians
classroom of the elite – is it edgy? yes. are the quotes frustratingly misused? oh yes. is it fun? ugh yeah actually
romantic killer – pretty cute and the edge of danger at the end really sells it
free – solid watch but it left my brain like sand in a sieve
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 anime)
wolf’s rain – what passes as deep when children are your primary audience
hell’s paradise – boring and i liked the manga so.
durarara!!x2 ketsu – the conclusion falls short
land of the lustrous – bold but was too slow for me
⭐⭐⭐⭐ (3 anime)
tomo-chan is a girl! – sometimes funny but the conceit does not justify 13 episodes and it loses steam fast
mushishi – some of the vignettes were beautiful but felt repetitive
bleach: thousand-year blood war – sleek, hype, plagued by all the old bleach problems
no game no life season 1 - confused that this was such a phenomenon when it came out. it’s fine i guess.
⭐⭐⭐ (5 anime)
kamisama kiss – trite imo
given – god save us from anime about perfect people being perfect with each other – but this time set to music!
tokyo revengers s2 – 🤷
natsume’s book of friends – i don’t need vibes this cozy
sasaki to miyano – and i really don’t need vibes this cozy
⭐⭐ (0 anime)
⭐ (0 anime)
& then ongoing shows that i’m not going to rank until i finish them (but actually all are pretty good so far) – skip to loafer, heavenly delusion, spy x family s2, apothecary diaries, jujutsu kaisen s2, frieren: beyond journey’s end, vinland saga s2

Few thoughts about Rosen Garten Saga. Spoilers up to chapter 54 I suppose.
More lesbian dragonfuckers as the main character. A thought popped in my mind that if you described this series as a lesbian on a quest to impress a queen she's obssessed with it would be totally correct.
More series should be openly horny. It has that yonesequé that series like Maho Ako, Tsugumomo (critical though), What Happens Inside the Dungeon and such have; where the horny element fits the story perfectly and makes it much more, as oppossed to "their shameless fanservice" (<- she is biased).
Really liking most characters so far. Highlights are Lynn for obvious reasons, the Alibaba/Aladdin/Mjinn-chan dynamic because all three of them are great in their own ways, Orochi because I'm horny for her, Gawain because more men should crossdress and try to be cute and Attila because I can appreciate a fuckboy with charisma.
For a short time I thought the series was Rozen Maiden (<- she was very confused) and was wondering when they where going to introduce all the dolls.
I'm a bit of a hater for the term "trap" when I'm 100% positive the original is otokonoko. Selfdescribed for real life people is fine. Like I'm not a japanese/english translator but I'd just leave it as is and add a TL. Personal gripe, don't like the word and its associations.
Not a fan of the loli/incest with the dragon girls. I've literally no problem with either of those by themselves, it's the combo that makes me raise my eyebrows. Again, personal distaste because it reminds me of really really bad hentai.
I hated Dietrich at first, currently I consider him a minor annoyance. This type of character who openly throws themselves at women and seem to enjoy rejection (Sanji One Piece as another close-but-not-quite example) or in this case get horny about it reminds me way too much of real life situations where "subby" dudes slide into DMs to drool over you and no matter what you do they get off on it (<- she is ranting). No matter, main point is that at first I hated him but he's grown to be less disgusting and more comedic(?). Once more, personal problem with submissive men ignoring boundaries because "my queen, my queen <3" while the woman in question is retching. It's just a character. No big deal.
The 3 paragraphs before might make it seem like I have a problem with the series but it's quite the opposite. I don't mind, and often enjoy series with problematic content (<- she loves ntr) and this one does an excellent job at just throwing things at the reader and if you like it great if you don't, well, we need more series to be openly horny so we get more that might do it for us. Also because they are great. If we can't overlook a few flaws (<- subjective tastes) in a series then we can't enjoy anything.
As a final note: let's read Rosen Garten Saga together.

Favorite gothic horror novels? Just finished rereading Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Finished reading Rebecca about a month ago after not being able to concentrate on books for awhile and it brought me back to the gothic genre
Hey! 😁 So I don’t have a more recent memory of many books in this category and I don’t trust my own taste from 8+ years ago lol, but these are some novels you didn’t already mention (+ some short stories and other stuff) that I’ve loved enough to read more than once and know pretty well.
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
“The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame.” This one is so effective in how it very gradually turns into horror, opening with lush descriptions of the beauty of a garden in the first scene and then, as Dorian moves toward becoming so evil over the course of the story, taking you to darker and darker places, to depravity and decay. Basically a scathing criticism of English aristocracy and a defense of problematic art in which Wilde was also deprecating himself a bit, which seems to suggest that total innocence is the greatest sin because Dorian's inability to think for himself makes him so easily corrupted by challenging ideas.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
“Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within.” I'm a bit of a hater of the Netflix Hill House, mostly because even taking it on its own terms it's just not that good, but also because it erases the real horror at the center of the novel, which is the harm the traditional family can do and the reality that one can never completely escape where they came from. The ending feels horrifyingly inevitable because of how incredibly well the protagonist and her weaknesses are fleshed out throughout the book. Few pieces of horror media have truly gotten to me and spoken to some of my own personal fears like this.
Interview With the Vampire / The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice
“Do you know what it means to be loved by Death? Do you know what it means to have Death know your name?” These aren't all-time favorite books of mine or anything, and I wouldn't quite call myself a TVC fan, but so much about these first two books in the series are exactly what I want when I feel like reading something moody and gothic in a historical setting. When I finally got around to reading these after a life of being exposed to stuff like True Blood and TVD, it felt like running my hands through bolts of authentic silk and velvet after only encountering synthetic imitations of those before. Somehow they still hold up as something special in the vampire genre and aren’t just laughable after angsty vampires and other things in them have become cliché. Knowing Anne Rice was, in a way, dealing with the death of her daughter by writing the first one certainly helps to still give it some real power.
Swamp Thing by Alan Moore (Saga of the Swamp Thing #20-61)
“There grows yet in Hell a flower that’s named for her.” In this run, Moore famously retconned aspects of Swampy's origin story and put him in a very Frankenstein-like state of questioning the nature and meaning of his existence as a monster. It's beautifully atmospheric and you can practically hear the insects in the Louisiana bayou in the more still and quiet nighttime moments. You get a mad scientist villain, a beauty-and-the-beast love story, truly terrifying vampires, truly terrifying occult magic stuff, and an unforgettable portrayal of Hell that Neil Gaiman would later build on in The Sandman.
“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving
“Not far from this village, perhaps about two miles, there is a little valley or rather lap of land among high hills, which is one of the quietest places in the whole world. A drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the land, and to pervade the very atmosphere.” If you're not the kind of reader who can enjoy, in and of itself, being immersed in a setting through lengthy descriptions, this may not be your thing, but I just love the picture it paints of historical New England. It’s the ultimate spooky autumn vibes story, in a sort of wholesome and cozy way. I think of certain passages every year when the leaves start to turn and I start seeing pumpkins everywhere.
"The Masque of the Red Death" / "The Tell-Tale Heart" / "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe
I mean, it's Poe. WYD if you haven't started with some of these.
"Goblin Market" by Christina Rosetti
If you were exposed to this as a kid like I was, it’s worth revisiting! A favorite poem of mine which tells a very moving and dark fairy tale.
“The Rats In the Walls” / “The Call of Cthulhu” / “The Shadow Over Innsmouth” by H.P. Lovecraft
“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.” The problems with Lovecraft are well known and you can absolutely live without reading his work if you don't want to take the gross stuff with the stuff that works, but the stuff that works no one else can really do quite like he did. It's not that his prose was even that great, but....his imagination. 🤯 He was consciously taking a lot from Poe, and I think his work seems to partly fit right in with gothic works of the classic canon because it was dealing with the anxieties of an increasingly secular world, perhaps during the last gasp of a time when that could still feel like a relevant theme in horror, but obviously in a very new way that was uniquely his own and came to define cosmic horror.

Ese semidios llamado Percy Jackson
🇪🇸 - 🇬🇧
This demigod called Percy Jackson.
🇬🇧 English 👇🏻
I've always been a huge fan of Rick Riordan's books, specifically the Percy Jackson sagas, both The Olympians and The Heroes of Olympus. I really liked the films they made years ago, even though there were only two, they fell very short for me.
I didn't have everything with me regarding the Disney+ series but I have to admit that I am loving it and that I am enjoying it very much, even though the character of Annabeth Chase is nothing like the book, I have nothing against her the actress, Leah Jeffries, because she is doing AMAZINGLY WELL, but that forced inclusion thing is starting to get quite tiring, it's not fair to the actors and actress who play a role with certain characteristics, for example Ariel, the Little Mermaid, there are too many boring haters and these actors and actress do not deserve that contempt just for doing their job, sometimes amazing.
The post credits are impressive, and only for this the series is worth it to watch.

Wait what Grant commented about buying likes??
Gather ‘round for story time...
On November 17th (2017) Grant posted the Westallen wedding pic and within a day or so it reached a million likes. His first ever so it was kinda a big deal in the WA fandom. A few days later (the 23rd) was Thanksgiving that year. And that Thanksgiving Grant was real busy. He randomly went back through all his pics and decided that was as good a time as any to delete all the pictures he had of Hannah. When he wasn't doing that he was on Candice's page lurking on her Thanksgiving post and liking a haters comment about wanting Iris to be killed off. He then spent God knows how much time jumping from page to page to tell them to stop spreading the screenshot showing he liked that comment because it was doctored...or maybe he accidentally liked it...or something...
Long story short he spent a lot of time trying to put out a fire he started because he was lurking somewhere he had no business. But we digress.
That same day was when LA posted that creepy video of Grant essentially sniffing her while she looked smugly into the camera. We assume it was supposed to be sexy? Envy-inducing? Something other than the cringe-fest it ended up being, we're sure. To finish it all off Grant posted a photo of him and LA on a boat with her ring front and center. His comment section was full of people congratulating him on his engagement (including other blue checked celebs) as if his ass hadn't been engaged for like 7 months at that point. Maybe they forgot when he got engaged like Grant always does...
But anyway, the coup de grâce was when we noticed that his pic with LA (his first since the WA wedding poster) was gaining likes at an abnormally fast rate for such an boring, uninteresting photo. Keep in mind he also posted a photo of all the DC heroes (or at least most) that were featured in the crossover and that didn't rapidly gain likes the way the picture with LA did. Finally someone called him out for buying likes and he responded.
Tumblr media
So mature right?
Magically, despite Grant not knowing how anyone could ever possibly buy a like, they slowed down almost immediately and that pic never made it over a million likes. And to anyone that might think we shouldn't buy too much into it remember, this is also the year that Grant re-arranged his Top 9 so that the WA wedding wouldn’t be appear to be the #1 picture even though it was
Tumblr media
And that’s the end of that chapter of this never ending saga titled ‘Remember When Grant Was On That Bullshit?: Volume 1’.

To die would mean nothing else than to surrender a nothing to the nothing, but that would be impossible to conceive, for how could a person, even only as a nothing, consciously surrender himself to the nothing, and not merely to an empty nothing but rather to a roaring nothing whose nothingness consists only in its incomprehensibility.” - Franz Kafka, Diaries, 1910-1923.

I feel like when people say GT had good ideas they mean VERY broadly. "It's a return to the adventurous spirit of DB! A rogue gallery arc! Their reliance on the dragon balls had consequences!" I almost never see anyone praise any level of the execution because like... how could they lmao
Right, that's why I object so much to the line. It's become this worn-out cliche, and GT apologists don't even realize how tired and overused it is.
I'm a fan of the Garlic Junior Saga. I think it was pretty fun to watch, and it's short enough that its problems aren't too offensive. Does it suck? Absolutely! I'm not gonna go around telling people it's Actually Good, or that it's "underrated", or that it's not nearly as bad as everyone says. I'm not gonna say it had "good ideas". The Black Water Mist is a pretty cool plot device, but it stops mattering about two episodes in. Piccolo fights the good guys for a while, but then it turns out he was faking it, so all of the actually mind-controlled characters are pretty far removed from the action. Garlic could have planted time bombs around the world instead and it wouldn't have changed much.
It's okay to like stuff that sucks! I'm not even talking about "guilty pleasures". My favorite Superman movie is Superman IV, widely reviled as one of the worst superhero films ever made. And while I stipulate to every single critique of the film, I still say that movie is awesome because Superman rebuilds the Great Wall of China and catches the Statue of Liberty and moves the entire moon.
By the same token, GT-likers are totally entitled to say that they just like GT no matter what haters like me have to say about it. They can like it for sentimental reasons, or because they grew up with it, or because they just think Super Saiyan 4 looks rad as hell, or whatever. But don't come at me with this "good ideas" nonsense, because there weren't any. Don't tell me about "back to basics" when GT looks nothing at all like OG Dragon Ball. That'd be like me trying to tell people Superman IV had good special effects (it didn't) or that the subplot about the Daily Planet getting bought out was a great social commentary (it wasn't). You can like something that sucks, but if you try to convince people it was secretly good, then you'd just being dishonest.

This Month in History - December
There’s a ton of pop culture anniversaries to raise a glass to this month:
Dec. 3, 1965: Rubber Soul released
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1965, The Beatles’ 6th studio album was released. Here is what I wrote in 2015. Happy 55th Rubber Soul!
Dec. 7, 1990: Edward Scissorhands opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1990, Tim Burton’s deeply personal fantasy and his first collaboration with Johnny Depp was released. Much like Twin Peaks at the time, it had a lot to say about there being more to suburbia than meets the eye and it showed the “Frankenstein” creation who doesn’t meet the norm, but has such creativity and brings so much to the community. I saw this not once but twice in the movie theater. Still one of Burton’s best. Happy 30th Edward Scissorhands!
Dec. 8, 2000: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 2000, Ang Lee’s martial arts epic was released. At the time I was heavy into Hong Kong action cinema and I was even directing my homage To Be John Woo, which had references to Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh, so I was super excited to hear about this movie starring Yun-Fat and Yeoh from the excellent director Lee! It had some of the most lyrical action and beautiful cinematography of this century. As of this writing it is the biggest grossing foreign language film in the U.S. box office, showing U.S. audiences will read subtitles. Happy 20th CTHD!
Dec. 9, 2005: Brokeback Mountain opens
Tumblr media
Speaking of Ang Lee, in Dec. 2005, his other Oscar-winning drama was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2015. Happy 15 Brokeback Mountain!
Dec. 11, 1970: John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band released
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1970, John Lennon’s first studio rock album was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2015. Happy 50th JL/POB!
Dec. 11, 2015: The Big Short opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 2015, Adam McKay’s smart and funny financial crisis movie was released. The characters were the kind of people you don’t normally see in movies and it was using celebrities and pop culture to explain complexities of the economics to the masses. McKay, who was known for directing Will Ferrell movies, had the last laugh on all the haters and even won an Oscar for co-writing the screenplay. I named it my #6 Movie of 2015 and my #50 Movie of the 2010s. Happy 5 Big Short!
Dec. 12, 1980: Sandinista! released
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1980, The Clash’s 4th album was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2015. In 2019, I named it my #3 Clash Album of All Time. Happy 40th Sandinista!
Dec. 15, 1995: Heat opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1995, Michael Mann’s crime movie epic was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2015. Happy 25 Heat!
Dec. 18, 2015: Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 2015, the long-awaited 7th chapters in the Skywalker Saga of Star Wars was released. It is the biggest grossing film in U.S. box office history. Say what you will about the sequel trilogy, but its impossible to not be as excited as a school boy when watching the original cast 30+ years later passing the baton to the new characters. Happy 5 Force Awakens!
Dec. 23, 2005: Munich opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 2005, Steven Spielberg’s historical thriller was released. In Knocked Up, Seth Rogen’s character mentions that this movie is awesome because "Jews get to kick some ass" and then says "if any of us get laid tonight, it will be because of 'Munich.'"! Spielberg’s film takes on a covert operation from the Israeli government in response to the Munich massacre at the 1972 Olympics and it is one of Spielberg’s best and most underrated films. Happy 15 Munich!
Dec. 25, 1995: Four Rooms opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1995, the anthology film from 4 indie-film directors in their prime (Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell) was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2015. Happy 25 Four Room!
Dec. 25, 2015: The Hateful Eight opens
Tumblr media
Speaking of QT, his epic western character study was released in Dec. 2015. Filmed in 70mm, I made a trip to Coolidge Corner Theatre to see it in all its glory when it was released. The violence in QT’s movies isn’t for everyone, but here it was similar to Reservoir Dogs, where it’s a group of criminals are in a room who are all suspicious of each other and not entirely honest. Ennio Morricone finally won an Oscar for his score to this film too (got my soundtrack on vinyl). I recently named it my #26 Movie of the 2010s! Happy 5 Hateful Eight!
Dec. 29, 1995: 12 Monkeys opens
Tumblr media
In Dec. 1995 Terry Gilliam’s bleak futuristic noir was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2015. Happy 25 12 Monkeys!

@sichore The short answer is that I am a DBS hater.
I honestly went back and forth whether to put Broly on there, but because I didn’t really recommend watching either DBS or Resurrection of F, I just didn’t bother with putting it on there.
Resurrection of F is where Super Saiyan Blue appears for the first time, so if you jumped from Battle of Gods straight to Broly, you would just see Super Saiyan Blue (and baby Bra) out of absolutely nowhere. It’s honestly not that big of a deal, but I’m also willing to admit that my personal bias AGAINST the blue form makes me inherently try to pretend it doesn’t exist.
One of the movie’s biggest strengths and weaknesses is that a lot like the DBS’s different sagas, it stands by itself mostly and doesn’t require any of the previous DBS saga knowledge, outside of SSBlue. The first half or so, detailing some of the history of the Saiyans and seeing Broly interact with different people is fun.
I also tried considering how strong this movie is without any knowledge or history of the original Broly movies because I think a lot of the pull of the movie is seeing a previously shallow, but popular character reimagined into something that sort of works.
I ALMOST didn’t suggest Battle of Gods, but that was only because my vision is blurred by how much I dislike Super which retroactively made me wary of the film. I put it on there because I thought back to how much I actually did like watching it the first time, before I knew anything about Super.
Hell, if I was extremely on my bullshit, I would have put the order like this
1. Dragon Ball
2. DBZ, up until the end of the Great Saiyaman saga, and then immediately stop, pretend the Boo saga doesn’t exist and never watch another episode of anything Dragon Ball related and never interact with any of the fandom and live your life in complete and absolute peace at having had the ultimate Dragon Ball experience.

TROS
If the only problem with TROS was the death of Ben and the rest of the movie was a masterpiece, then maybe I could forgive them. But the serious problem here is that the ENTIRE FILM is an absurdity on its own. You kinda feel like gathering all the facts across the trilogy and distribute them proportionally in each of the films so it all feels cohesive. But that couldn´t be done because Lucasfilm obviously didn´t map this project as a trilogy which it´s absolutely embarrassing. It wouldn´t have costed much for the board writers to sit for a week and write ONE STORY and divide them in three acts just like every writer does when making a book or an independent film or a short film or a documentary, Jesus there are so many people out there writing way better stuff than this with almost nothing of a budget. Having to use different directors is no excuse. The team behind the Mandalorian proves that, they obviously work as a team and so far they seem to treat the Star Wars legacy with respect taking old facts and carefully placing them where they´re needed.
Now, what pisses me off the most about this film is definitely the irrationality of Rey´s arc. The Rey who stood in front of Palpatine and told him “You want me to hate you but I won´t, not even you” is the same Rey who spent THE WHOLE MOVIE attacking Kylo over and over again out of nothing. I´ve spent this whole year wondering why they were fighting in the rain, only to find out that it was for nothing other than Rey´s sudden rage. Wondering why was Kylo flying his TIE towards her and why was she backflipping over it, only to find out it was for nothing too, were they trying to kill each other? Just after Kylo told her that he didn´t want to kill her? Did the conversations in TLJ were all for nothing and they´re back to zero? It´s like all JJ wanted was to retcon TLJ and have cool shots, which they are. The fights are very well choreographed and performed, and they´re visually beautiful and majestically scored, but that doesn´t take away the fact that plot-wise they´re absolutely pointless. When Kylo starts to talk about her past, she again attacks him in a way that for someone who believes in the good side and the Jedi and the light and repulses everything that has to do with the dark side, seems pretty infuriated and aggressive. If she was pissed off about everything the First Order did during the Allegiance comics, it would have made sense for her to mention it at least, because as it was presented it all seems pretty illogical and only for show. Again, they make her look as a person who it´s not enough informed about anything and can´t use her words to stop being one. She didn´t even think in taking advantage of Kylo´s second offering of joining him to defeat Palpatine, then if she didn´t want the throne and was so worried about Kylo becoming emperor, she just could have TALKED and tried to bring him back to the light. But that didn´t even crossed her mind, she just wanted him dead until she actually killed him and didn´t want him dead anymore just because she felt Leia dying, and I can´t believe Chris Terrio has repeated the same also pointless fight between Batman and Superman where Batman remembers his mother and suddenly decides to not kill Superman after beating him badly. I absolutely hated that movie and I was hoping he wouldn´t bring any of it into this. Saddly, I was wrong.
You can´t just link Rey to Palpatine out of nothing. You either connect her to him from the very beginning throwing hints of it or you don´t link her with anyone from the past at all. And you can´t just bring Palpatine with absolutely no excuse, it makes it obvious no one planned to have him behind it all from the start. The concept of Rey Nobody settled by Rian Johnson was a good idea so all kids around the world could relate to her, giving an important message that you don´t need to come from something important to be someone. But if the idea here was to prove that someone who comes from the dark side can choose to be light side, then DEVELOP it through the entire trilogy.
Bringing new supporting characters in the last two films has resulted in a crowded mess when everyone gets to say a line with no purpose, wasting the film´s time. When they presented Rey, Kylo, Finn and Poe as the main characters in TFA, it was understood that the story would be told through their eyes. Then why the hell bring new characters to do the job that they could do. It just makes Finn and Poe look like a pair of extras with nothing relevant to do, just being a burden to Rey when she clearly could have done everything on her own. It would have be them two going to the core worlds and convincing the people to join the cause, so they can truly be heroes in this story. Instead of having everyone joining at last minute because they think Lando is dope and decided that somehow they´re not scared anymore even now that a massive imperial fleet has appeared out of nowhere. And why having so many ships to fight the final battle when they´re gonna waste it by not showing too much of it. I mean it´s called Star Wars for a reason, but somehow they´ve wasted more time having Rey and Kylo fight than investing in the action on air. If all those fights between the two of them had place in TLJ and the talking force bonds had place in TROS, then maybe it would make a bit more sense and the story would seem to have a proportional pace in each film and a better structure. Instead, this movie seems like rushing scramble of events awkwardly mixed with all the trivia they could find from the Star Wars lore while spitting in your face absurd facts about the characters you have known for 5 years and having to believe each of them.
I wouldn´t have problems with Hux being the spy if he was suspect from the beginning. You can´t make a character to be a cold blood mass murderer and devoted to the First Order to the point of fanaticism and then turn him into a softy who reveals he is the spy and traitor of the very thing he loved, in a stupidly parodic way, and who can also be gotten rid off quite easily. And all without any character development whatsoever. I mean, fanfics make a better job with Hux as a villain.
Why create the knights of Ren if you´re gonna have them like silent dogs and get them easily killed when they´re also force users? I mean, I´m not saying that Ben is not powerful enough to finish them but apparently in the comics HE AND LUKE have fought them before and they made it out alive. It would have been a lot more interesting to have the KOR since TFA and make one of them suspect so he can be the one to bring Palpatine back to life in TROS. It would have been better to have Ben and Rey fighting them in TLJ throne room instead of the shitty praetorian guards that are killed in one second in episode III.
Why presenting new characters in Resistance Reborn if we´re not going to see them not even on the background during the resistance base scenes? It´s such a lucrative and deceitful game to have books, comics, etc. and not include them in the films in any way. I can picture them saying to the writers “Yeah, do whatever you want”.
And finally, why create such a good concept like “dyad in the force” if you´re gonna have just one of them fighting against Palpatine while the other one is in a hole. It obviously should have been them BOTH fighting Palpatine and defeating him since when they´re together they have the balance of the force. I mean, I thought that was what Star Wars was all about. It should have been all the generations of Jedi helping them BOTH since Ben Solo had already gone back to the light. Why create such a compelling complex character if they were going to make him have the exact same fate that Darth Vader had. It´s so frustrating the lack of imagination for a conclusion, it makes you cringe. The ultimate message here is that the Skywalker family was cursed and they all deserved to die.
I applaud the astonishly good performances of the actors, the realism they brought makes it all more believable and painful so we don´t forget this film actually happened. The entire movie pains me so much because I´ve grown to love Star Wars and I´ve had deep love for each of the films, yes even the prequels. I´ve defended every movie from the haters and I never thought it would come the day that I would say the saga has been completely destroyed.
