sometimes I wish that the non native english speaking cc's would just say fuck it and heavily rely on the translator like let them express how they feel in their most natural form without having/feel like they have to accommodate english speakers the Translator is a beautiful thing that I wish they utilized a lot more (because that's also how they can further improve it)

Innit VS In’t - a PSA
I’ve seen some confusion in Hobie fics around the word “innit” and I think I’ve figured out why: aside from general confusion about the use of the word, I believe some people are occasionally mixing it up with “in’t”.
So let’s dive into it!
Innit - isn’t it
Can be used at the end of a sentence to make it a question or for emphasis.
E.g. “That’s a load of rubbish, innit?” Or “I’m Spider-Man, innit.” (The latter is an example of emphasis. It’s not grammatically correct but using slang isn’t always about being grammatically correct).
“Innit” can also be used in the middle and at the beginning of sentences (in place of “isn’t it”).
E.g. “Innit lovely out here?” Or “You told me that a Vulture variant was loose in Holborn, but innit true you’ve been tellin’ porkies?”
In’t - contraction of “isn’t”
You can use “in’t” in place of “isn’t”.
E.g. “In’t that the guy who was in here earlier?” Or “That’s a metaphor for capitalism, in’t it?” (You could also use “innit” in the second example).
It can be a bit confusing to a non-English ear to distinguish between “innit” and “in’t”, especially when they’re spoken quickly. For example: if you think you’re hearing someone say something like “Innit that right?” (which would be saying “Isn’t it that right?”, then you’re probably actually hearing them say “In’t that right?”
But wait!
Couldn’t you just use “ain’t” instead of “in’t”?
Sure!
“Ain’t” is a very versatile contraction. It can mean: am not, are not, is not, have not, has not, do not, does not and did not.
E.g. “I ain’t a liar!” Or “He ain’t done his homework.” Or “Ain’t that the truth.” Or “It ain’t right.”
Fun facts:
The earliest records of “ain’t” are from the 1700’s but it was popularised by Dickens’ representation of Cockney dialect.
“In’t” originates from Northern England.
So why use “in’t” instead of “ain’t”?
Personal preference, innit?
And there you have it, a dive into the world of “innit”, “in’t” and “ain’t”!
As always, I’m not an expert, I just wanted to share the knowledge that I do have. There may be other ways to use these words, depending on what part of the country you come from, but this should cover the vast majority of them (if not maybe all of them)! Hopefully someone will find this helpful, informative or entertaining at the very least. I know a lot of this seems basic, but there are a lot of non-native English speakers in the fandom so I wanted to cover all my bases.

tone indicators
I reblogged this post without adding any commentary bc queue and not a lot of computer time lately but like okay here's the thing about tone indicators:
they're yet another in-group set of coded speech. like an inside joke, or a meme, or a conlang. if you are in a group that uses them, they're great and perfectly comprehensible.
but if you don't happen to have come from inside a group that uses them, they are exactly as exclusionary as any other heavy jargon or inside joke or acronym. I mean have you ever listened to soldiers talk? The US Army communicates in heavily jargon-ified speech, liberally laden with acronyms, so much so that it's a self-referential joke to make up obscene or deliberately-obfuscated ones to slip into official reports since the sorts of people who'd kick up a fuss about obscene language won't understand them.
It is exactly the same thing. Except that's exclusionary on purpose, and tone indicators are exclusionary in effect but tout themselves as inclusionary.
So if I, an outsider to this, am reading along, and after a sentence, there's a / and then between one and three letters, that is not enough information for me to use to look it up.
This is absolutely inaccessible if you are not alreadhy in the group that uses it.
I wouldn't mind if the people who used them were just like 'oh ha sorry jargon, i'll try to explain if it's not clear, sorry i forget you guys don't know them' just like any other inside joke or meme or whatever.
But I was in a discussion with someone on a Discord and when I was puzzled about them including these weird slash-acronyms after their statements they were like oh how nice for you that you're not neurodivergent and don't need to use these.
Uh no. The opposite actually. I'm the kind of neurodivergent that needs context. I handle being excluded from conversations very poorly. And that's where I get pissed off, that people seem to be holding these up as the new be-all end-all of Finally Solving The Problem Of Ambiguous Tones In Social Interaction. The hell you are, kids. They're just another layer, and I'd say the worst one yet, out of many many many attempts to solve this exact problem. They are fundamentally inaccessible. Don't mistake the fact that you learned them (somewhere, in some context inaccessible to me) for them actually being universal.
Considered against the many different solutions that have been offered since text-only speech was invented, tone indicators stack up as among the very least-accessible of the lot, since they contain so little context in and of themselves-- if a key is not provided then they're totally inaccessible, and are exceptionally difficult for non-native English speakers, and in general require so much memorization or cross-referencing as to be prohibitively hostile to outsiders.
And that's fine, if what your'e doing is just meant for talking to your friends. But don't come into my conversations and berate me for not having memorized whatever incomprehensible set of acronyms you've newly-decided are the new universal truth. And what drives me the most insane is how many of these acronyms someone has now decided to assign a whole new meaning to are acronyms that are well-known and already existed and are in heavy use. So if you try to look them up guess what you get! is it gonna be the newly-created version or the one that's been in use for fifty to seventy-five years??
For one, P.O.S. has had a specific meaning in written and spoken English for a really damn long time and if you call me a piece of shit in the actual language I speak I am absolutely not going to interpret your conlang as having intended something nice. (YES REALLY THEY'RE USING THAT ONE TRY TO GUESS WHAT IT MEANS. NO. NO! I know. Fuck! That's wild. Absolutely the fuck not.)

You wander around the woods, returning from another day of working in the city and coming closer and closer to your home when you start to feel uneasy, as if you’re not alone in the forest. You stop and listen, noticing the sound of footsteps close by. With careful steps you approach the sounds, noticing a head full of silvery hair between the trees and watching it carefully.
A man with an eyepatch, dressed in black leather clothes and carrying a long, sheathed sword on his hip. You monitor him carefully; his hands behind his back as he is gazing out into the treeline, he seems to be taking a stroll. But this deep within the forest?
You stalk him for a while, trailing his steps as you make sure to stay hidden. Too busy with staring at him you don't notice a branch on the ground, stepping on it and causing a loud *krack* sound.
The silver haired stranger turns around quickly, facing you and making eye contact. You know it's too late to hide now, as his lilac eye meets yours and a wicked smile forms on his lips
“Hello there, little one. Are you lost?”
“I could ask you the same thing.” You say, looking him up and down more closely now. He doesn’t look like someone that should be wandering this deep into the forest. You notice the tell-tale signs of a Targaryen. You’ve heard of them and noticed a few children with these features when you explored the street of silk once. But who exactly was this man standing in front of you right now?
His mouth twitches, eyes twinkling with mirth. “Oh, I am not lost, little lamb. Simply having a nice stroll to take my mind off the stress of ruling. May I ask who I have the pleasure of finding so deep in the woods?”
“No, you may not.” You answer, staying wary of the stranger. You’re starting to connect the emblems on his clothes and scabbard with the ones you’ve seen on royal guards patrolling the city before, this man must be one of the princes. “You should leave. These woods aren’t a place for a pretty prince like you.”
“My, my, my. So confrontational. Why the defensiveness, my beautiful little lamb? Are you hiding something?” He steps closer to you, his voice now has a hint of danger in it.
“No one wanders this part of the woods. You’re better suited closer to the city.” You say, trying to sound more polite than before, quickly understanding the prince might not appreciate the disrespect.
“Ah, yes, no one wanders this part of the woods. Well, that only makes me wonder how a pretty little lamb like you got herself as deep in here as I did. Unless, of course, you are not alone.” His eye leaves yours, scanning along the tree line before stepping closer once again.
“Relax, this is no ambush. Unless you keep on intruding on my space, then it just might.” You say sternly, hoping to play into his paranoia and get him to leave quickly.
“I do so wish I could believe you, little lamb.” His eye still scans over the tree line as his hand falls to the hilt of his sword. “How do you expect me to relax when a beautiful girl like you is all alone in the woods? You couldn’t have gotten this far without help.”
“I have. You don’t think all that dirt and tools on me are for decoration, do you?” You say, gesturing to the axe tied to your belt, knifes dangling off the bag you carry that’s strung over your chest.
“And what exactly did I catch you doing all alone in the woods, little lamb?” His voice is firm now, eye narrowing as he takes a closer look at you, trying to judge you.
You remain quiet for a few moments before deciding to answer truthfully. “I live here.”
“You live here, little lamb?” His eye scans over you once more. “YOU live in the woods?” His voice is filled with equal measures of surprise and disbelief.
“I do.” You say affirmingly. “And I’m not fond of guests.”
“A woman alone in the wild? No man to protect her? No family?” His disbelief is evident in his voice and expression. “I cannot imagine how a beautiful woman like you has endured out here.”
Upset at his words, you feel anger starting to boil deep inside of you. Women in this time are still property to be owned, another reason why you decided to live out here, away from society. “Cut the feigned sympathy. I live just fine out here.”
“But is it really living, little lamb? Living in the wild? Surely a woman of your beauty must desire the comfort and luxuries of civilization. Do you feel no desire to start a family, to have someone care for you and protect you?” His tone seems kinder now, almost caring, although his disbelief is still clear and you cannot shake the feeling of danger coming from him.
Suspicious at his invasive nature you raise an eyebrow. “What is this? A tea party to exchange gossip?”
“Oh no, little lamb. You are a most fascinating creature and you have sparked my interest. I am merely trying to find out more about who you are.”
“I’m not interested in conversation-“
“Now, now, little lamb, we’ve come this far already. It wouldn’t be very polite to turn down a crown prince like this.” His eye narrows, an obvious predatory hint in his voice as his hand tightens on the hilt of his blade. “It’s appalling for a citizen to turn down their crown prince, my dear little lamb.”
You tighten your jaw, nervous at the sudden turn this situation has taken but unwilling to comply with his orders. “I am not a citizen of yours-“
“Everyone is a citizen of mine!” His words are soothing with anger as his patience has reached its limit and he pulls the blade from its sheath. “Now come closer little lamb. I’ll help you back to the city where you belong, where it’s safe.” He begins to stalk towards you, his dark gaze fixed upon you.
You take a few steps back before you turn around and start running, using the the fact you know these woods like no other to lure him away from where your home is before skillfully outmaneuvering him in the thick forest, hiding successfully in a small cave. The silver haired man tries to follow you, you can hear him yell profanities and curse words as he struggles to keep up with you, eventually getting caught up in the thicket and falling behind. "Damn you!" Aemond shouts as he breaks free of the branches and finds himself standing in a clearing with no sign of the little Lamb in sight. Where the hell did she go? Damn this forest. Damn her.
He inelegantly shoves his sword back into its casing, taking a last long look around the scenery before begrudgingly turning around to make his way back to the city.
The rest of his day is plagued by thoughts about her, remembering every single detail about his encounter with this strange, wild little Lamb. She lives in the woods all alone, with no one to care for her? Surely, he thinks to himself, no one would truly want to do that.
She did seem awfully skilled at maneuvering the trees and avoiding my chase. Could she truly be completely alone? He wonders, staring into the lit fireplace of his chambers, his finger mindlessly tapping along the rim of the almost drained cup in his hand. His interest in the little lamb was definitely piqued. He would venture out into the woods to find her again once his duties allowed him to.
time skip / two weeks have passed
Things went back to normal after the encounter with the stranger, you didn’t see him again, but you did make sure to be extra cautious about your surroundings at all times, avoiding all travelers for the time being.
You’re sitting on a boulder in the river, only your ankles in the water as you sharpen your axe using whet stones from the river while waiting for the fish you caught this morning to finish smoking. You’re deep in thoughts as when you notice an unusual rustling of leaves behind you and catch a glimpse of the familiar silver head through the trees.
Here we go again.
The silver haired man had been stalking the Kingswood once again as he had done for several days since he encountered the strange little Lamb the first time. Searching for any hints as to where she lived, so that he could go back and speak with her again.
His hope was running low when then he finally saw her again, sitting in the river, tending to her tools. His heart skipped multiple beats, he couldn’t quite explain why he felt like this.
Still, she is the only one this far into the woods. No one around to protect her, just like when he had met her last time. This woman was a mystery he was most eager to solve. He slowly and deliberately stalked over to her, taking great care to be as sneaky and quiet as possible.
Even though you had noticed him immediately you keep focusing on your tool, pretending you hadn't noticed him as he approaches, hiding behind the last tree that provides him with cover before he would have to step out into the open.
"What is it you want?" You ask after a while, your voice loud and clear while your eyes are still focused on the task at hand. His attempts to remain hidden are more amusing than anything else.
The man was startled but quickly covers his reaction with his typical demeanor, standing proud with his hands behind his back as he steps out of the tree line and approaches the mysterious beauty carefully, as if trying not to startle her. She had quite a sharp ear. Although, he should have known better. If this little lamb had survived by herself in the woods, hearing the noises of the trees and animals was a skill she must have honed greatly.
Once he’s only a few feet away he stops abruptly, contemplating his choice of words before he speaks in a friendly yet stern manner. "You are quite perceptive little Lamb."
He remains quiet for a while. You’re still focused on your tool, not looking up, as you probe him further. "Speak. I know you've been following me for a while."
“I was simply fascinated with your lifestyle after our last encounter, that is all." He comes a few steps closer, enough to look at her properly, but not so close as to make himself a threat. "Why do you live out here, by yourself? Away from civilization and society?"
"Because I wish to do so." You say, now leaning forward to wash off the freshly sharpened axe in the river water.
"But is there no other reason little Lamb? You do not get... lonely? You do not yearn for society or friends? This forest is cold, dark, and dangerous." The mans voice seems filled with what seems like genuine concern for your welfare.
"The forests seem like that only to those who aren't welcome in them." You say, now looking up at him for the first time this conversation. "What do I get out of sharing my life story with you?"
Aemond's eyebrow quirked slightly at your words. Your words were not aggressive but they were not exactly kind or welcoming either. „You get to answer your crown prince a few questions that have been gnawing on his mind for a while. Who could say it wouldn’t be worth it?”
“I could say. The less people know about me, the better. Easier to stay hidden that way.”
Aemond stays silent after she says that, thinking over her words in his head. Stay hidden from what? From whom? What could make her feel that she must remain hidden... "Tell me, my little Lamb. Who are you hiding from?" Perhaps after finding out that one thing, he can put this obsession to rest.
"Men like you." You answer, now shifting your attention back to your tools, reaching back into the river to fetch out another whet stone to sharpen a big knife now.
"Men like me?" His eye narrows. " I am no threat to you. What could possibly have led you to believe that? You are alone so deep in the woods and I have not shown you any hostility... yet."
"No hostility?" You say laughing. "Chasing me with your sword was what then? A local friendship ritual I’m not familiar with?"
"Oh, I was simply trying to get you to stop and talk to me. That is all." He says, a small smile gracing his lips at her words. He found her laughter quite endearing.
“Didn’t work very well now, did it?”
"No I suppose not," His smile grows slightly, he finds this strange little Lamb's demeanor quite intriguing. He was never great at interacting with women, but this one seemed comfortable in his company, at least somewhat. Even if she was also incredibly untrusting and suspicious of him, or of men in general. He looks at her intently, savouring her smile as he knows his next words will wipe it right off her face again.
“I want to know more about you. I will not leave until you tell me more.” He says and as predicted, her cheeky smile gets replaced with a frown again.
“I told you, I won’t-“ he interrupts her quickly, almost pleading with her, “I know, I know. But I need to know. I cannot rest at night. I will not tell anyone about you. Whatever you tell me, it will not have any consequences, I swear it.”
You sigh deeply, pondering his words. You couldn’t care less for telling your story, the possibility of sharing too much lingering in the back of your mind. Then again, perhaps this is just what you needed. Sharing a bit of your true self with someone after having to carefully craft a fake persona and uphold it for the past two years. “Fine then. What is it you want to know?”
His eyes light up at that statement as he takes his time deciding which one of his many questions he should ask first. “Your accent, it seems out of place. Are you not from here?”
You immedily begin to regret your decision to talk to him, struggling to find a way to phrase the truth in a way it doesn’t sound too outlandish. “No, I am not. I come from a land far away, you wouldn’t know it.”
“Did you come alone?”
“Sort of. I came here with others but they… forgot me. Or maybe they are just unable to return. I wouldn’t know.”  You say, looking out into the flowing river as you remember.
“Forgot you? Why would your family just forget you?”
“They weren’t my family. They were… people I knew. We went here and they left, never to return, at least not until today. They probably told my family I died.” What had they told your family? You often wondered it. The changes of the seasons and moons made it easy for you to tell how much time had passed here, in this world. Did as much time pass back home? Was your family even informed of what truly happened or were they waiting back home for a sign of life that would never come, with no way of knowing your fate?
Aemond is quiet for a while, processing this information. “How long have you been here?”
“I’ve been here two winters already, the coming one will be my third.”
“THAT long?” He blurts out, mind racing. “You have survived here alone all this time, out in this forest, with no family or friends? How?”
A slight smile tugs at the corner of your lips, amused by his disbelief. “Yes, I have. I’m friendly with some of the farmers around here and some merchants. I was fortunate, really, that I was stranded here with a few tools and a bit of money.”
“That could not have been enough to make you survive here. The winters can be hard, as can be nature itself. I don’t know a single woman that would be able to survive like this even with all the tools in the world.”
“I suppose you’re right.” You shrug. This is your normal, all you knew for most of your life, you often forget just how unusual it really is. “I come from a family of farmers. We lived far out, away from civilization, and I learned a lot about nature that way. I am, or was, my parents only child. I spend many years of my childhood in the forest with my dad. He was an avid fisher and knew all the ways around the forest, while my mom taught me all about her knowledge of herbs. She was a healer of sorts.” 
Your smile returns as she recalls all her fond memories of home. Oh, how you wished you’d never left the farm. “They bred, trained, and sold horses too. I was strapped to a saddle on my own horse before I could even walk.”
His face shifts from one of shock to one of sympathy. He could tell by your words and the tone your voice takes that you missed home dearly. “And you have no way back?”
“No.” You state plainly. Do you? Truthfully, you do not know, but you surely hope you do.
“Why? If I give you coin for passage, can you go back home?”
“I’m afraid its not that easy.” You huff, struggling to make up an answer to this question. “Unless they come get me, I have no way back. I… I’m done talking about this.” You say, now shaking your head.
He wants to press further but understands he shouldn’t, not if he’d like to keep you talking. “Well then… What are you planning to do here then? You can’t just stay out here forever.”
“Why not?” You conter. “I’ve gotten comfortable out here. I know my way around the woods and can survive quite well out here. I’ve come to appreciate my little life out here quite a lot, actually.”
“Is this really life or is this survival? What about finding a family of your own, what about children?”
You sigh deeply. “I may not have answers to all those questions yet, but I do now I’m content here for now. I have no duties here, no bills to worry about. I just need to figure out my next meal and get to enjoy nature the rest of the time with all the peace and quiet it offers me.”
The change of topic strikes a chord in you, one you didn’t realise was as sensitive as it seems to be. The prospect of having to live out the rest of your days in this time is one that seemed more and more realistic and the question of what you would actually do for the next twenty, forty, sixty years of your life was one burning in the back of your mind more and more frequently.
“I’m done talking for today. You may leave now.” You dismissed the prince, frustration growing inside you.
He is not happy about this, his expression shows this as much as the tone of his voice. “Leave? I just arrived. You can’t just send me away.”
“I do not wish to tell any more stories.” You state. Just as he begins to talk again you turn to face him quickly, looking at him for a few seconds before proposing a compromise. Maybe you just needed some time to gather your thoughts and calm the inner turmoil you can feel bubbling deep inside your chest right now. “How about this: If you can find me again, I will answer you more questions. Anything you want.”
His jaw clenches as he lets out a long sigh. This is not how he wanted this conversation to end but he could tell from her expression that she seemed exhausted and the prospect of getting to ask anything he wanted seemed tempting enough to agree. “Fine then. I will seek you out again soon, but I will not rest until I have all my answers. You must swear you will not avoid me again.”
“I swear it.” You answer, a reassuring smile on your lips. “Have a safe travel back, my prince.”
She had been speaking so freely all this time that hearing her address him properly caught him off guard for a moment. He stands still in place, watching her a bit longer, before begrudgingly turning around to leave after bidding a small goodbye.
As he walks away you turn around slightly, watching the swaying of his silver hair until it disappears completely between the trees. A long, deep sigh escapes your lips as you resume your tasks for the day, thinking about all the questions he asked and what you really wanted from your life now.
You were honest, you did love your life as it was now, but sometimes the solitude did get to you as well. A craving for the love and closeness your family had brought you. As much as you cursed the prince when you had first met him, maybe having his attention on you could be a good thing after all.
He thought his mind would be calmed after speaking to her but to his dismay, the opposite had happened. His head is filled with questions still and worse so, genuine worry about her wellbeing. Yes, his little lamb had survived well by herself, but the confirmation that she was truly alone out there was deeply unsettling to him. When he is laying in bed that night, he realised just how little he knew about her. He didn’t know where she lived – did she have a house or did she sleep under the stars? He had never even asked her name. What would it be? If she is from far away, it surely was exotic.
He keeps tossing and turning that night, the picture of her smiling face filling his mind, even more so when he closes his eye, as if he can see even clearer when the world isn’t distracting him. He tries to sleep but he swears he hears her laugh, still as clear and comforting as it had been when he heard it the first time. A sound so sweet it could lull him to sleep, if only there wasn’t the gaping emptiness next to him, reminding him of your absence, of the fact you’re all alone out there. If something happened to you tonight, would he ever find out? He could not bear the thought of it.
His night stays restless. He falls asleep again and again, dreaming vividly about the way your cheeks rounded when you smiled at him, about the freckles on your nose, the small dimples that appeared under your cheeks when you smiled and over your lips when you pursed your lips in dismay at another thing he said.
It was improper, he knew that much. For a prince, the heir to the throne, to be so enchanted by a forest dweller. Nevertheless, his heart skipped a beat every time he had laid his eyes on her. His mind went back to think about all your interactions at every chance it got, even in the midst of important meetings. He was a devoted and proper man; he knew better and yet, something about her felt so fundamentally right that a future without her seemed wrong.
When the first rays of sunshine broke though his windows he had made his decision. He would go to see her again and this time, he would not leave her behind. He could not. He will find her and bring her – well, where? Somewhere, anywhere he knows she is safe, where he knows he can find her whenever he wants to see her. He will figure it all out, he will find a way to make this work.
His feet soon carry him through the castle, unaware of where he is going until he finds himself in front of two wooden doors. The kings, his brothers, chambers.

Which we can all agree is boring...

"mange tes mort" wich translates to "eat your dead (relatives)"

I have a lot of thoughts about epistemology and the nature of procedural knowledge. Studying linguistics really impresses upon you just the sheer amount of human knowledge that is procedural and implicit. Languages are these huge, ridiculously complex systems, and even when it comes to the most thoroughly documented language in human history (English), you can still make an entire career documenting as-yet-unknown minutiae of some corner of a corner of the system. It's very difficult to impress upon non-linguists just how big and ill-understood languages are.
There is no book which explains the whole of English grammar. No one on earth knows the complete rule-set of English grammar. Not even for one dialect, not even for one single speaker. No one on earth could write a comprehensive treatise on English pronunciation. We do not know how English works. We do not know how any language works.
And yet, these systems are, in their entirety, already stored in the mind of every native speaker.
When it comes to synchronic information, I literally already know everything there is to know about my dialect of English. I know the timing of every articulation, the exact rules for verb and auxiliary and quantifier placement, the phonology, semantics, syntax, the lexical variation, the registers, all of it. I can deploy it effortlessly while I am thinking about something else. I can form reams of perfectly grammatical English sentences without a second thought. I can deploy the most arcane rules of wh-movement and quantifier raising and whatever else. With no effort at all.
Tens of thousands of people having been making careers trying to document these things, not for my exact dialect but for varieties essentially the same as mine, for 60 years in earnest. And they aren't close to done. And I already know it all. And so do they! They already know it too! The hard part is accessing it, putting it down on paper. That requires experimentation, systematic empirical investigation—science.
So what this has really impressed on me is how much of human knowledge is procedural. How much of it is known only in the doing. I'd wager that's the significant majority of what we know.
This is related to two thoughts that I have.
The first is about the value of unbroken lines of cultural inheritance. With language, the difference between native speakers and second language learners is stark. I think it's safe to say, per current research, that someone who learns a language in adulthood will simply never have the same command of it as someone who learned it in childhood. There are a variety of tests which consistently distinguish native from non-native speakers. You can get very good at a language as an adult learner, good enough for basically all practical needs (except being a spy), but there's a bar your brain just cannot meet.
The unfortunate fact about language is this: if the line of native-speaker-to-child transmission is ever broken, that language is lost. You can try to revive... something, if you want. Like was done with Hebrew in Israel. But it will not be the same language. And not just in the sense that, by the passing of time, all languages inherently change. In a much stronger sense than that. No matter how big a text corpus you have, no matter how well documented the language is, there is an immense body of implicit, undocumented, procedural knowledge that dies when the last native speaker does. And you cannot ever get it back.
I think, often, about the fact that so much human knowledge is procedural, is used and understood and passed on in illegible, difficult to codify ways. I think about the effect that a rapidly changing world has on this body of knowledge. Is it going to be essential for human prosperity? Probably not. But that doesn't mean that losing it will harmless. Certainly I expect much of it to be missed.
The second thought is about an epistemic distinction that I've had in my head for a long time, a distinction I'd like to refer to as that between a science and an art.
An art is any endeavor for which there is an established methodology, an established set of procedures and rules. These rules can be explicit and codified, like the rules of a game, or implicit, like the grammar of a language. They can be absolute or they can be mere guidelines. But in essence, an art is anything you can get good at. Math is quintessentially an art. Football is an art. Ballet is an art. Painting is an art. An art is any endeavor in which procedural knowledge is acquired and channeled and refined and passed on.
Art contrasts with science. A science is any endeavor in which one is shooting blind. Science is the domain of guesswork and trial-and-error. Sciences are those domains that do not lend themself to practice, because... what would you practice at? You cannot get better at science, because science is not about skill. Science is about exploration. It necessarily involves forging your own path, working with odd and faulty tools and odd and faulty ideas, trying to get them to work. Science only exists at the frontiers; when a path is well-tread enough that a body of procedure becomes known and practiced, that path is now art and no longer science.
This distinction is not a taxonomy. Everything we do involves a little bit of art and a little bit of science. Everything involves both a refinement of known skills and an exploration of new avenues. Of course there's a little bit of science in painting, there's quite a lot of science in painting. Every modern and contemporary art museum is full of it! And there's science in math, every once in a while. And there's art in biology and chemistry. Art and science are two modes of engagement, and different endeavors demand them of you in different ways.
Perhaps science is like a glider (you know, from Conway's game of life?), traveling ever outward, and with enough passes over the same area leaving art in its wake. And I think in some sense that all real human knowledge exists as art, that all endeavors capable of producing true insight are either arts or sciences buttressed by a great many supporting arts. Although maybe I'm wrong about this.
I think history is mostly science, and in large part history as a field seems to be on quite solid epistemic footing. So I don't want to convey the idea that science is inherently dubious; clearly from the above description that can't be my position. Nor is art inherently trustworthy—for instance I think jurisprudence is primarily an art, including religious jurisprudence, which of course I don't place any stock in. But I do think I'm getting at something with the idea that there are a range of epistemic benefits to working within an art that one lacks access to in a totally unconstrained science. This is also closely related to my ideas about abstraction and concretization schemes.
Language is an art, one of the oldest arts, but modern linguistics is more or less a science. Like any good science, linguistics has certain arts unique to itself—fieldwork and the comparative method come to mind—but the most vibrant parts of the field at present are science through-and-through. It's a science whose objects of study are arts, and I think maybe that's part of why I've become so aware of this distinction. Or, language is the ur-example of an art, the art from which (if I were to conjecture wildly) I think the cognitive machinery for very many other arts has been borrowed. But I don't really know.
Anyway, those are my thoughts.

The Polish language and the return of the old Polish they/them.
Gendered languages, such as Polish, present unique challenges when it comes to implementing gender-neutral pronouns like "they/them". The Polish language, has a complex system of grammatical gender, with different forms of adjectives, nouns, and pronouns depending on whether the noun is masculine, feminine, or neuter. This can make it difficult to introduce new gender-neutral pronouns, as they would need to fit into this system and be accepted by native speakers. Additionally, there may be resistance from some quarters to changing the traditional grammar rules, as many Poles are proud of their "traditions".
In recent years however, nonbinary people looking for a way to refer to themselves in Polish language, with little to no success. It was also a huge problem for translators of popular English works and shows that already presented quite a few of nonbinary characters. Most of the time the translations ended up referring to the openly nonbinary characters with "she" or "he". As a example Jim Jimenez from Our Flag Means Death, (played by Vico Ortiz who is also nonbinary) is straight up misgendered by official translation.
The English pronouns "they" and "them" have been increasingly used as gender-neutral pronouns in recent years, particularly by nonbinary and gender-nonconforming individuals who do not identify as exclusively male or female. When translated into Polish, these pronouns are commonly rendered as "ono" and "ich". It is interesting to note that the Polish word "ich" actually shares some similarity with the English word "their", which is a possessive pronoun used to indicate ownership. The irony is that the Polish word for "their" is gendered and cannot be used as a gender-neutral pronoun, whereas "ich" is often used to refer to a group of people rather than a single individual. Despite this linguistic limitation, many nonbinary and gender-nonconforming individuals in Poland continue to use "ono" and "ich" as gender-neutral pronouns.
Polish nonbinary people until recently used she/he in spoken form and added "x" (graphic pronouns) in the place where the gender...nation(?) in the word accrued, in written form. For a lot of people it was just uncomfortable. It often made sentences harder to read and unnatural since the letter "x" doesn't exist in Polish, and most people just put "e" (implying masculine) or "a" (implying feminine) in the blanks automatically, because it was easier to read it that way.
Some people use "it" - "to", which is neuter, however polish neuter is often taken as something offensive when applied to a person. "To", implies it's a thing, so of course a lot of nonbinary people felt understandably dehumanized by using that pronoun.
When Polish nonbinary folks were figuring out what pronouns feel most natural to them and fit the language, they were met with a huge amount of harassment. "These pronouns are made up", "You're a thing not a person now.", "These are not correct" and so on and so on
To check the checkboxes on the "stupid conservative twitter trolls cannot harass me because of my pronouns" list, the nonbinary pronouns had to: sound right, be used before in polish language and be intuitive, so there came the pronouns "ono/jeno".
The pronouns "ono" and "jeno" were also used as third-person singular personal pronouns when referring to people, particularly those whose gender was not specified or who were of non-binary gender. For example, "Ono przyszło" could mean "They came" or "It came" depending on the context. Similarly, "Jeno ktoś tam stał" could mean "Only someone stood there". In the 18th and 19th centuries, the use of "ono" and "jeno" to refer to people fell out of favor, and other pronouns, such as "on" (he) and "ona" (she), were used instead. This shift was partly due to the influence of other languages, such as French and German, which have gendered pronouns. However, the historical use of "ono" and "jeno" as third-person singular personal pronouns for people demonstrates a more inclusive view of gender in the Polish language, which is relevant today as more people identify as non-binary or gender-nonconforming.

The fact that "ono" and "jeno" have been used in Polish language in the past has helped to give them greater legitimacy and credibility among nonbinary individuals and allies who are advocating for the use of gender-neutral pronouns. Because these pronouns are not "made up" and have a history of use in the Polish language, they are more difficult for critics to dismiss as illegitimate or frivolous.
Furthermore, the fact that "ono" and "jeno" sound correct and are intuitive within the context of the Polish language has also helped to promote their widespread adoption. While these pronouns may have a somewhat archaic or rural feel to them, they nevertheless fit seamlessly into the broader grammatical structure of the Polish language, making them a natural choice for nonbinary individuals who are seeking to express their gender identity.
Despite the growing acceptance of gender-neutral language in Poland and the adoption of pronouns like "ono" and "jeno," nonbinary individuals still face significant harassment and discrimination from conservative groups and individuals who refuse to recognize the legitimacy of nonbinary identities. However, much of this harassment can be dismissed as ignorant or uninformed and/or refusing to do any research to protect their world view, as even one of the most popular polish carols uses "ono" to refer to baby Jesus, as "ono" was often used to refer to children.
In 2023 on the bookshelves you can find correctly translated works written from the eyes of a nonbinary character using the pronouns "ono" and "jeno" and I wholeheartedly hope that this trend continues. The use of gender-neutral pronouns is an important step towards creating a more inclusive and diverse society, and it is essential that literature reflects this. By using pronouns such as "ono" and "jeno" to refer to nonbinary characters, authors can help to normalize these pronouns and increase awareness and understanding of nonbinary identities. In addition, correctly translating these works into other languages can help to promote the use of gender-neutral pronouns in those languages as well. Overall, the use of "ono" and "jeno" in literature can help to promote greater acceptance and inclusivity of nonbinary and gender-nonconforming individuals in society.
Gendered languages have a great struggle on finding their own "they/them", however I wouldn't say Polish is one of them as ironic that may sound, as Poland is taken as a very conservative.

Regarding Daniel and his use of English I think that he also tends to "hide" his accent so people can understand him better, if you hear Jack or Blake or Scotty or even Oscar you can hear that strong accent but Daniel is easy to understand, maybe that's why it takes him sometimes more time to come up with a word because he wants to make sure that it isn't from the Lingo.
This is my opinion as someone who consider English as a 3rd language and fins it hard at first to follow native speakers, but Daniel is the first English native speakers that I've ever understand from the get go
omg yes! I was having a similar thought last week! When that video resurfaced of Will asking Daniel to 'say something in his native language' and it was like a code switch! (if I stumble upon it again I'll link it. I just remember it was Renault!Danny and he was wearing a mask the LOVELY @ayu1708 found it!!)
I absolutely think he purposely neutralizes his accent to be better understood and as someone who also does it, I get it, because its annoying af when you keep needing to repeat yourself because someone can't hear past your natural accent.
He DOES try to use non-slang and he's always trying to confirm that the words he's considering aren't slang I think I read an old interview once about him knowing that there are people listening to him speak who aren't native English speakers, who would have a hard time following him.
I'll never forget an interview I watched (that I know I won't be able to find unfortunately). It seemed to be a smaller scale publication and i don't want to assume where they were from but the interviewer's accent was thick. And Danny spoke so slowly and clearly and you could see him thinking about the words he chose, in a 'I know this is going to be translated into their language so let me be sure to use the easiest words to convey my meaning' way. And I remember thinking that that was SO SO considerate of him!

Since Luz and Hunter in your switched AU are born in 1600s colonial America and Luz clearly speaks Spanish in the AU (shown in a comic) and is Latina (specifically Dominican) in show cannon, is there any history stuff you’re adhering especially considering the differences between Spanish and English colonies in location and demographic or are you ✨going rogue?✨ Is Luz an indigenous-Spanish mix like many Latinos are today? How would she have gotten to mainland since a lot of Spanish claim was in the Caribbean or Florida and treatment of indigenous people by Europeans, specifically Spanish and British, was notoriously brutal? Sorry if I’m absolutely overthinking this. This is coming from a history nerd, so I’m just curious how that’s going to work considering the realities of racial divides in colonial settlements during 1600s America and the relatively small number of Spanish people that actually would’ve lived there by then. AGAIN SORRY IF I’M OVERTHINKING IT I’M JUST A NERD FEEL FREE TO JUST BE LIKE “NAH.”
OH btw, I noticed a comment in a comic that implied trans Hunter and just wanted to mention that there’s some super interesting accounts of LGBTQIA+ people from the time period if you’re interested. I know of a fan work about Caleb and Phillip where Caleb is trans that covers that extensively if you want a link.
I LOVE ASKS LIKE THIS ANON!! Because IM overthinking it but at least someone else is too! So there's a lot I can't answer due to spoilers -- and I actually will be explaining a fair bit because I just am so charmed at how we are so on the same wavelength here so if you don't want to not know literally anything even a little bit spoilery about Luz or Hunter before the comic comes out I would ignore this ask! -- but I will go into some of it!
Okay! So I tossed and turned on this exact issue for FUCKING MONTHS. Go rouge or loophole? How historically accurate did I want to go with this concept and how much of that accuracy am I sacrificing for just needing something to be a certain way? Do I want to be as accurate as possible or have a cohesive and interesting story?
The answer is a little bit of both! Im much more of an art history nerd than a straight up history nerd but I have my moments! I love the sociopolitical conundrum having a latina Dominican (ALSO half black! Love that about her but SO hard to write in!) girl in 1600s America because it can be as little or as highly complicated as you can get. I drew a lot of inspiration for a long few months pouring over what groups of people were where and when -- what languages they spoke -- wether the books that I could find could describe a day to day of these people rather than just political conflicts.
Footnote : There are certain Native American groups so fucking overlooked that they don't even have ONE BOOK of comprehensive (non war centered) history that isn't a four year old reading level. I looked for WEEKS. I tried everywhere and was even willing to start to buy reading material but it just doesn't exist? Especially around the original colonies????? HOW!! People around me started telling me I should write a book because of how much I was obsessing over it and trying to find any information but no books can be written on close to NONEXISTENT historical writings! OKAY BACK TO IT--
I looked out for the first sightings of Spanish in the west and where they were headed -- wether or not any Spanish broke away from the group to have children with the Native Americans in the area at the right time -- what the political state was between Britain and Spain -- did they occupy the same or around the same places close enough I could fudge it? Were they friendly toward each other? When were slaves from other countries brought to America? What languages would they have spoken and is there a good translator online? What kind of spanglish can come from Angola, Umbundu and Spanish speakers at the time? Or would it be spanglish with Portuguese because of who was controlling the slave trade at the time?
Tearing out my hair and a hundred more google searches later I decided it wasn't worth the misrepresentation of both languages to try and include either of them mixed together in that way in the whole comic-- just bits and pieces separate for my sanity -- although I WILL get some cultural things in there I promise!
Some things just can not stay historically accurate and one of those things is speech. That was the first thing -- so damn difficult to really pin it down properly in the older dialects so I just had to sadly put that away first. All of the languages written about will be mostly modern versions, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and others but while keeping in mind the time frame.
Next I obsessed about when and where exactly would culture mixing begin and if the people stayed in the same spots! Also unfortunate ( for this AU purpose only! )that most of the Spanish went down and not into the Americas but history will be what it is.
SO
I decided that what I was going to do is make it up a little using a lot of historical context available instead of switching up Luz's race in a serious way to make the accuracy better -- I was going to have things happen MUCH sooner. Like 2 or 3 generations sooner. The Native Americans and Spanish populate together in 1500 ish instead of 1700 or 1800. I GET THIS IS REALLY INACCURATE but it was so fucking impossible to do anything else without getting into things I didn't want to do. The British get there the same time as usual and start the colonies in the 1600s but the Spanish are already moving up into North America and have already spent a lot of time with the Native Americans there at the time. SO that means that Luz is able to have a Native Mexican/ Native American AND Spanish mix at the time of the AU start and be similar to how the population became around now -- my dad inspired this! He's got the same mix himself and I loved that I could pull from that. It's such an interesting genetic tree honestly -- there's a lot of seriously horrible things that happened do not get me wrong -- but the history is amazing.
Luz being half black however feels similarly difficult but it follows the same principles of things with everyone who is not British making things happen much earlier. Africans come to America ( Horrifically and brutally I want to make that very clear) and some in real life of course make their way out of that brutality and hide away from the British and the Spanish...with who? The mixed Natives and Spaniards. Couple of generations later and we have a beautiful mixed pot like the America we see today but hundreds of years early that allows me to keep my afro Latina!! Hunter eventually finds this group that has naturally traveled up into where the british are setting up their first settlements in Virginia and joins them for reasons I can not explain!
THANK YOU for letting me ramble about all this rich history it is incredible.
ALSO I love trans Hunter HC and I do a lot of it myself but in this comic Hunter is cisgender. ( BUT seriously if you wanna hc Hunter as trans in my story I would love it -- trans fem or masc because Hunter is one of the transest coded characters ever) Because both him and Luz are attracted to the same and opposite sex I will still be able to explore certain LGBTQIA+ issues as well!
(DISCLAIMER : Listen I completely understand if this switching around might feel tone deaf to some people but I do not intend to shy away from the brutality of the past or give it a nicer spin -- but this is not a comic focused on the nitty gritty details of the world that Luz and Hunter come from but a focus on the nastiness that comes from later in their lives in Gravesfeild and the witch trials. To have this happen and keep all characters relatively the same I had to do a lot of background but It is worth it to keep these characters with their integrity intact)

thoughts on x men evolution kurt?
i LOOOOVE evo kurt!!! i have a huge soft spot for evo in general (i love love love any animated version of the xmen and evo is so silly and whacky i cant help but adore it) and i think kurt is sooo adorable in that show.
i love how this version of kurt leans wayyy more into his mischevieous and silly pranky side than most other adaptations and i really appreciate that. i feel like its such an underutilized and underrepresented aspect of his character that it even kinda gets tossed to the wayside in the comics half the time, but it's one of the things that makes him such a fun, three-dimensional character. i think its awesome that evo chose to go with that side of him when other adaptations focus more on his melancholy, somber side (which i also love of course! but its not all there is to him!)
im also a huuuuge sucker for little brother and comic relief characters in general (bobby's always been my fave o5) and kurt rly kinda takes on his role of the silly team baby in evo. i adore a silly team baby. plus, kurt is ACTUALLY the youngest of three siblings in canon, so i can totally see him being the annoying kid brother who tags along with amanda and stephan and gets on their nerves.
i liked the more serious plot they did for him too with the whole thing with mystique. ill never get tired of that storyline i wont lie and i think evo manages to strike a good balance where kurt is funny and comedic relief, but you still care about him and when he has a more serious moment it works.
although i think he CAN be a little overexaggerated with his teen speak, i like to imagine that's due to his status as a non-native speaker so he awkwardly overuses slang to try and fit in. I gotta say that I think most of the time Kurt being a teen from germany coming to america is treated kinda weird (see: the reboot movies acting as if kurt doesnt know what a movie or a store is. like guys hes from berlin in the 80ies. hes not from fucking dorf schragensdiek mid-14th century he probably has done way wilder shit than suburban teen scott summers.) so i like to make up my own headcanons to make it make sense a little lmao. also as a german: we think american/english sayings are super funny and like repeating them as germanly as possible. its like a nationwide sport so kurt doing it for funsies would also be totally reasonable.
overall i tend to take a lot of inspiration from evo for my version of a teen kurt bc the way he's characterized could totally be a super young and immature version of the sweet calm fuzzy guy we all know n love. hes silly and pranky and kind of annoying, but he's also really caring and the way his relationship with kitty evolved from a silly crush to genuine friendship was SO sweet. i love when kurt is shown that way, flirty but ultimately completely unselfish when his affections aren't returned and totally glad to just be friends with someone he had a crush on. i do think it's really lame how he uses the image inducer all the time since kurt NOT using the inducer anymore is such a big part of his character arc, and him using it at HOME all the time too is really weird but... well, whatever. in total one hell of a lovable, great kurt.
plus his design is super cute. how can you not love that 90ies boyband middlepart??

today is yesterday was the international mother language day, so i thought i could make a post about the languages spoken in spain!
all of this data will come out of wikipedia, so i'm sorry if there's something wrong. i now realise i could've planned this way more, it's my bad honestly, i'm sorry.
anyways, let's start with the mother tongue map of spain; each color represents one language:

light green: spanish, galician: blue, catalan: orange, euskera: grey, aranese: red, asturleonese: green, aragonese: yellow.
the blue dots in extremadura are fala (then northernmost one), and most likely portuguese like the one spoken in olivença (thanks @satyrwaluigi).
by comparision, here's a map with the recognized co-oficial languages (spanish is the national language, and in various regions some languages have a co-oficial status)

the lighter colours refer to different categories depending of the language:
lighter blue refers to areas where galician is recognized as a minoritized language but isn't co-oficial
lighter green refers to areas where euskera is recognized as a minoritized language but isn't co-oficial
lighter red refers to areas where catalan is spoken but isn't co-oficial
lighter orange refers to areas where valencian is the official language but isn't spoken.
the reasoning behind the separating catalan and valencian into two distinct languages is a complex one, if you want more info @useless-catalanfacts made a great post about it (and here is even more info about the topic they very nicely provided me with). in a nutshell, valencian is not a distinct language from catalan and the reason why it's listed as such is political.
as you can see, there are some languages, mainly aragonese and asturleonese, that aren't recognized as co-oficial languages in their respective regions despite the large number of speakers. this makes them especially vulnerable to linguistic colonialism, and is why thousands of peoples from those areas are fighting in order to make their languages official in the state's eyes. if someone knows of organizations or groups that are involved in this movement, please let me know and i'll add them to the post.
apart from the aforementioned catalan blog, here in tumblr there's really great blogs about iberian minoritized languages; i personally recommend @beautiful-basque-country and @minglana for euskera and aragonese respectively, but i am sure there's more.
also, there are some languages that are not even mentioned in the maps despite its critical situation that i thought i should remark here:
fala, as stated before, is spoken in the borders between portugal and extremadura and it heavily borrows from portuguese. it has an estimated 11k native speakers.
caló is the language of the iberian roma people. it has an estimated 60k native speakers between spain and portugal.
darija, the arabic variant native to morocco, is also spoken in ceuta, a city of 80k inhabitants.
tarifit / riffian, a tamazight variant spoken in the rif area of northern africa, including the city of melilla, with 86k inhabitants.
finally, apart from the autochtonous languages, there are also several languages brought by the migrant population, who should also be counted in this post. here are all the languages spoken in spain; the first number is of native speakers, the second one of non-native speakers, and the third one is the total:

Translation notes for LM 5.1.19: Jean Valjean Takes His Revenge
First, I just wanted to highlight two skipped sentences in the Hapgood translation, at the point where we see Éponine. The section in French reads:
“Quand ils eurent enjambé ce barrage, ils se trouvèrent seuls dans la ruelle. Personne ne les voyait plus. Le coude des maisons les cachait aux insurgés. Les cadavres retirés de la barricade faisaient un monceau terrible à quelques pas. On distinguait dans le tas des morts une face livide,...”
The sentences in bold are omitted from the Hapgood translation:
“When they had crossed this barrier, they found themselves alone in the lane. No one saw them. [missing sentences] Among the heap they could distinguish a livid face,...”
With the missing sentences it would read something like:
"When they had crossed this barrier, they found themselves alone in the lane. No one could see them anymore. The bend in the houses hid them from the insurgents. The dead bodies pulled away from the barricade made a terrible heap a few feet away. Among the pile, a pale face could be distinguished..."
Second, I wanted to talk about the famous line, “You annoy me. Kill me, rather.” / “Vous m’ennuyez. Tuez-moi plutôt.”
As a non-native French speaker, the verb "ennuyer" has always given me a bit of trouble in interpretation due to its wide range of translations into English. I would love any input from someone who has a more intuitive grasp of French about what they feel this word expresses in different contexts!
The verb comes from "ennui," a feeling of weariness or dissatisfaction. In French to English dictionaries, you will commonly see the translation as both "to bore" and "to annoy" (along with verbs like "to bother, concern, trouble, worry"). A fun fact for any valvert shippers out there is that in Hugo's time it was also used to mean "to feel nostalgia for" or "to feel annoyed by the absence of something" though it should definitely be noted that the construction of the phrase would have to be different for it to have this meaning (Je m'ennuie de vous). Nevertheless, these are all sentiments that float around the context of this particular word, making it, for me anyway, somewhat difficult to translate.

it's fine, that post didn't actually contain an example or explanation of racism regarding names (or language more broadly)
mispronouncing someone's name on accident, or not immediately being able to pronounce it because the sounds or phonotactics (the way sounds are put next to each other) are not present in your native language, or not knowing how it's pronounced just from the way it's spelled, or not immediately remembering how it's spelled when it's not right in front of you, are not racist actions—that doesn't make any sense, and I've never seen anyone try to claim that.
being racist about people's name is more like
not trying to learn how to pronounce it and not giving a shit if you mispronounce it, though white people's names (even when they are not immediately familiar to the speaker) generally inspire more effort, more respect, and more apologies when they are mispronounced or mispelled
not giving a shit if you misspell someone's name, not taking two seconds to check the spelling and not apologising when corrected
not taking the time to learn someone's name when they tell you what it is (I have had people turn and walk away from me as I was explaining how to pronounce my name... even though I was an invited speaker and they were going to have to introduce me...)
racialising someone based on their appearance and immediately tensing up or getting stressed or annoyed because you expect that their name is going to be annoying, difficult, not worth the effort, &c.
racialising someone based on their appearance and immediately assuming that their name will contain sounds that you associate with the language you associate with that race, even when their name does not contain those sounds, and repeatedly mispronouncing their name for that reason

I would like some insight/opinions about this because I don't know what to think of it.
So I was reading this fic and love it but since I was in rush I left a comment in my first language, so not English, and went do my shit. When I came back the author answered this. Cite: 'can you please comment in English next time, i dont speak your language and my fic isn't in your language either, ty <3'.
They did say 'please' and 'ty', but I don't know, it feels kind off wrong? And I don't know how to explain that good why it feels wrong to me. Is something like why did you just had to point out the language I wrote the comment instead of the praise I did about the fic itself?
And the 'please' and 'ty' feel to me ... maybe passive-agressive isn't the right word but I don't feel them genuine. That they put those to not look like a massive asshole.
And before someone question this, I can and have wrote comments in English on other author's fics. But sometimes I lack the the energy or the words to express things in English and so I write in my language. But none of these other authors have responded like this to a comment in my language, so I also think this attitude is the minority and probably a bad one.
And being honest, if I wrote a fic in my language and an English speaking person commented in my fic in English I would be so happy, that people beyond my cultural barrier are reading my shit. But maybe that's just me (and other but not this particular author).
I'm not going to comment in any of their fics anymore for sure, that response made me kind of sad. And they clearly didn't appreciate the comment anyway.

I assume they didn't respond to the praise because they couldn't be bothered to machine translate your comment, so they have no idea what you said.
Personally, I'd be happy to get a comment in any language, but I also love languages and have studied a bunch. I never got very far in anything but Spanish, but I've taken a crack at plenty of languages.
In my experience, though, monolingual speakers of big, powerful languages who come from places that don't cultivate any level of comfort with foreign languages often feel like the presence of other languages is a nuisance sent specifically to inconvenience them.
People mock the US and/or English speakers for this, but I think it's actually a broader pattern that applies to any of the few big languages with both the population and the money/territory/clout/media industry to let speakers be lazy and feeble like this.
Some are secretly insecure about their lack of skills. Some don't understand how hard it is to learn a language or how often people know enough to read in English but not enough to respond in it. Many lack experience deciphering dodgy machine translations. It's a sort of learned helplessness combined with cultural blinders.
I don't know who this is about. I suppose they could be a non-native speaker and just going "Dude, we're in English language space right now". On average, it's usually best to communicate in a language you know the other person speaks. But it's not like it's that hard to pop a comment into google translate either. I'm rolling my eyes at them a bit.

I’m here with Dr. Itxaso Rodríguez-Ordóñez who’s an Assistant Professor at California State University, Long Beach, USA, and a native speaker of Basque and Spanish. Gretchen: Hello, Itxaso, welcome to the show!
Itxaso: Hi! It’s so good to be here. I feel so honoured because we use so many of your episodes in our linguistic courses. For me, being here is exciting.
Gretchen: Hello to Itxaso and also to Itxaso’s students who may be listening to this episode.
Itxaso: I dunno if I want them to find this episode, though. [Laughter]
Gretchen: They’re gonna find it. Let’s start with the question that we ask all of our guests, which is, “How did you get interested in linguistics?”
Itxaso: I feel like, for me, it was a little bit accidental – or at least, that’s how you felt at that time. I grew up in a household that we spoke Basque, but my grandparents didn’t speak Basque. My parents spoke it as non-native speakers. They were new speakers. They learnt it in adulthood, and they made me native. But I was told all my life, “You speak weird. You are different. You’re using this and that.” Later on, I was told that, “Oh, you’re so good at English. You should become an English teacher because you can make a lot of money.” And I thought, “Oh, yeah, well, that doesn’t sound bad.” When I went to undergrad, I started taking linguistic courses, and then I went on undergraduate study abroad thanks to a professor that we had at the university, Jon Franco. That’s where I realised, “Wait a minute. All of these things that I’ve been feeling about inadequate, they have an explanation.”
Gretchen: So, people were telling you that your Basque wasn’t good.
Itxaso: Yeah.
Gretchen: Even though you’re the hope and the fruition of all of this Basque language revitalisation. Your parents went to all this effort to learn Basque and teach you Basque, and yet someone’s telling you your Basque is bad.
Itxaso: Absolutely. You know, people wouldn’t tell you straight to your face, “Your Basque is really bad,” but there was all these very subtle ways of feeling about it, or they would correct you, and you were like, “Hmm, why do they correct it when the person next to me is using the same structure, but they don’t get corrected.” As a kid, I was sensitive to that, and then I realised, “Wow, there’re theories about this.”
Gretchen: That’s so exciting. It’s so nice to have “Other people have experienced this thing, and they’ve come up with a name and a label for what’s going on.”
Itxaso: It’s also interesting that as a kid I did also feel a little bit ashamed of my parents, who’re actually doing what language revitalisation wants to be done. You want to become active participants. But I remember when my parents would speak Basque to me, they had a different accent. They had a Spanish accent. I was like, “Ugh, whatever.” Sometimes it would cringe my ears; I have to admit that. As a kid, I was in these two worlds of, okay, I am proud and ashamed at the same time of what is happening.
Gretchen: And the other kids, when you were growing up, they were speaking Basque, too?
Itxaso: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I grew up in Gernika, right, and we have our own regional variety. I remember on the playground sometimes they would tell me, “Oh, you sound like the kids in the cartoons.”
Gretchen: So, you’re speaking this formal, standard Basque that your parents had learned as second language learners, and the other kids are still speaking the regional variety of Basque but hadn’t gone through the standardisation process and become the one that’s in the media.
Itxaso: Correct. My first variety was actually this standardised variety that nobody spoke when it was created in the ’60s. My parents learnt this in their 20s, and then that’s the variety that I was exposed to at home. But then you go in the street, and they’re like, “Oh, you sound like Doraemon,” because that’s what we watched.
Gretchen: The character in the cartoon, yeah.
Itxaso: Yeah, in the cartoon. It was like, “Oh, okay, do I? All right.” Then I started picking up the regional variety.
Gretchen: Right. You pick up the regional variety as well from the kids. Then what did your parents think of that if they think they’re speaking the fancy one?
Itxaso: Oh, my goodness. It was absolutely hilarious because my mom, she always thought that the Standard Basque is the correct way because that’s the one that you learnt in the school, so she did have this idea that literacy makes this language important. You know, for Basque revitalisation, that’s important. But I remember we were at home, and she would correct me because, for instance, as any spoken language, you would also shorten certain words. She would always say, “Oh, that’s not how you say it. You’re supposed to say this full word. You have to pronounce the entire word.” Then I said, “But Mom, everybody else uses this other variation,” especially with verbs, which are a little bit complicated, right. Then she would say, “Oh, Itxaso, you know what? I gave you this beautiful Basque, and then you went out to the school, and they ruined it all for you.” Then in order to come back, I would tell her, “Mom, but I am the native speaker here.” So, these tensions of who is right.
Gretchen: Who is the real Basque speaker, who is the best Basque speaker, and in this context where, in theory, your goals should be aligned because you’re all trying to revitalise Basque, and in theory, you all have the same goal, and yet, you’re getting criticism from different sides, and people are criticising different groups in this – but in theory, you have the same goals.
Itxaso: I think growing up in this paradox of I’m also criticising my mother, who actually, thanks to her, I get this language. In the revitalisation process, I think this negotiation is fascinating that you’re constantly being exposed to.
Gretchen: Constantly being exposed to all these different language ideologies around what is good, what is not good. You went to university, and you started encountering linguistic words for these experiences that you had. What were some of those words?
Itxaso: Some of these words I remember was this “standard language ideology,” that the idea or, in a way, that the standards are constructs that don’t exist. And I was thinking, “Wait a minute, in my language, we have a very clear standard.” We actually have a name for it. We call it “Unified Basque,” or “Euskara Batua.”
Gretchen: “Batua.”
Itxaso: “Batua” means “unified.” It’s associated with a kind of speaker. These are speakers that, like my parents, learned Basque through the schooling system, which today is actually the majority of the Basque-speaking population, at least on the Spanish side. “Standard language ideology” – I was thinking, “What is that? Oh, okay, it’s the thought that we have that these standards exist. How do I make sense of that?” I remember when I was in college, the term “heritage speaker” was thrown a lot.
Gretchen: “Heritage speaker” of Basque. Are you a “heritage speaker” of Basque?
Itxaso: I don’t consider myself a heritage speaker of Basque because – so I have Basque heritage, yes, and no. My dad’s side of the family is from Spain as well, but they also grew up in the Basque Country. This comes also with the last name. Do I have Basque heritage? Yes. But I think our connections with language are a little bit more complicated than the ethnicity per se. It’s like, we have this saying that says that it is Basque who speaks Basque. That was this poet, Joxean Artze, that we used to hear a lot during the revitalisation process. The question is, “What kind of Basque?”
Gretchen: Yeah, like, “Who is Basque enough to speak Basque?” And your parents speak Basque, but your grandparents didn’t speak Basque anymore, but if you go far enough back in your ancestry, somebody spoke Basque. But who counts –
Itxaso: But – yeah. My grandparents didn’t speak Basque. Their parents – maybe they had some knowledge. I dunno how far along. What we do know is that the region where my grandparents grew up in, Basque was already in the very advanced stages of language shift. Also, my grandparents were born in the civil war, so speaking Basque was probably not – it could get you killed.
Gretchen: Yeah. Which is a great reason to say, “Hey, you know what.”
Itxaso: Right. Then later on, this paradox is coming into play. As a 5-year-old kid, you’re not aware that your grandpa, you know, could have been killed if they spoke our language, but at the same time, my dad’s side of the family also was going through some kind of shame because he learnt the language as an adult, and he became in love with the language. This idea of heritage – do you need to be a heritage to be part of the language? It was a little more complicated than that. When I asked my mom, “Why do you learn the language?”, for her, she was always, “Because my identity now is complete.” But for my dad, it wasn’t the same reason.
Gretchen: Why did you dad learn Basque?
Itxaso: My dad learned Basque because after the dictator died, the revitalisation was very important, and there were a lot of jobs.
Gretchen: Ah, so just economic reasons.
Itxaso: For him, it was pure economics. Then, you know what, if I learn Basque, I’m gonna have more opportunities to have a government job, and a government job is a good job. Then after that, throughout the time, he actually became even more in love with the language, more invested in the revitalisation. He also did a lot of these – bertsolaritza is this oral poetry that we have. It has a very, very long oral tradition in the Basque Country. He read a lot of literature. He taught Basque in the school system. He was also invested in teaching Basque to immigrants as well because he felt like an immigrant himself as well.
Gretchen: And this question of who has Basque heritage, if you’re an immigrant to Basque Country, you are becoming part of that heritage as well.
Itxaso: Yes.
Gretchen: It’s an interesting example of how economic and social and cultural things can really work together for something, like, being able to get a job doing something can allow you to fall in love with it.
Itxaso: Yes, yes.
Gretchen: Or it can be hard to stay in love with something if there’s no way to support yourself while doing it.
Itxaso: Absolutely. I remember that he was always invested in these processes. I have to admit that – now I’m gonna be a little picky again because these ideologies sometimes don’t always fully go – you know, we still have these biases – my dad’s fluency and also competency became stronger and stronger, and then he started to also speak like locals, little by little.
Gretchen: Okay, you know, this standard, unified Basque – he’s like, “Well, maybe I’ll talk like the other local people.”
Itxaso: I remember that my mom was very clear, especially in the beginning – I dunno if she feels that way anymore – that the standard is the correct one. I don’t think my dad did have so many overt ideas about it. For him, in the beginning, it was instrumental, “It’s gonna give me a good job,” and then he fell in love. And then it’s like, “Now, I have to go to the richness” – sometimes he would say that – “of the dialects of the traditions.” But he didn’t have this heritage Basque. He was born in rural Spain, and his parents moved to the Basque Country for economic reasons.
Gretchen: And he sort of fell in love with it anyway. What’s it like for you – because you live in the US now – doing research with Basque and trying to stay in touch with your Basque identity despite not living in the Basque Country?
Itxaso: For me, I have to admit that, again, I came to the United States thinking that I’m going to be an English teacher when I come back. I said, “I’m gonna do my master’s, and then I’m gonna go back to the Basque Country, and I’m gonna teach English.” Uh-uh, no.
Gretchen: Okay.
Itxaso: I realised that the farther I am from home, the more I wanted to understand the processes or how I felt as a kid because I realised, “Wait a minute, I can find answers to the shame and pride that I had growing up.” I was also ashamed of my grandparents that they didn’t know Basque because when he would take me to the park, right, I knew that people would talk with him. I would just go, instead of him looking at me whether I am falling off from the swing, I was checking on him to see who was gonna talk with him because I was ready to do the translation work for him.
Gretchen: Oh, okay, if he can’t talk to the other parents or grandparents or whatever, then you’re like, “Oh, here, Grandad, let me translate for you.”
Itxaso: Yep. Then I remember that I’d think, “Hey, I’m teaching him Basque. He’s practicing, right?” Every Sunday he would come, you know, to our hometown and, before going to the park, I made him study Basque. He was so bad at it. Like, terrible at it. It was very hard for him, and he would tell me, “But Itxaso, why are you doing this to me? I didn’t even go to school.” I mean, he didn’t have much schooling even in Spanish. I said, “Don’t worry. If you’re Basque, you have to speak Basque.” Those were some of the – and I was 5 or 6. I was so happy, right. At the same time, I had this very strong attachment to him but also internalised shame that in my family intergenerational transmission was stopped. As a 5-year-old kid, you don’t understand civil war – yet. [Laughter]
Gretchen: I hope not.
Itxaso: When I went to graduate school, I realised, “Wait a minute, my teachers were correcting me all the time.” I had this internalised shame that exercised, right. I was told that sometimes I wasn’t Basque enough; sometimes I was being seen as a real Basque. So, what’s happening? This is when I realised that sociolinguistics, which is the field of study that I do, became very therapeutical to me.
Gretchen: You can work through your issues or your family issues and your language issues by giving them names and connecting them with other people who’ve had similar experiences like, “Oh, I’m not alone in having this shame and these feelings.”
Itxaso: Absolutely. And that there were many of us. There were a lot of Spanish speakers in my classroom who, maybe they didn’t have literacy in Spanish, or they had similar encounters of feelings, and I said, “Wait a minute, so we’re not that weird,” and understanding that, in fact, this is quite common. Or there were also speakers of other language revitalisation contexts that I thought, “Oh, wait a minute, I thought we were this isolate case,” and you’re thinking, “No, we have similar feelings of inadequacy, but at the same time, pride.” I used the world of linguistics in general to understand these patterns and also to heal in some way.
Gretchen: No, it’s important.
Itxaso: I almost had a little bit of a rebel attitude in some ways. For me, it was like, “Ha ha! I got you now!”
Gretchen: Like, “You don’t need to make me feel shame anymore because I have linguistics to fight you with!”
Itxaso: There we go! “And now, I’m gonna go back with my dissertation. I’m gonna make sure that you understand that YOU are the one wrong and not me, and that when you correct me, I am also judging you.”
Gretchen: Does it work very well to show people your dissertation and tell them that they’re wrong?
Itxaso: No. [Laughter] Absolutely not.
Gretchen: I was gonna say, if you said this was working, it’s like, “Wow! You’re the first person that I know who wrote a dissertation and everyone admitted that they were wrong.”
Itxaso: Yeah, but then you have this hope.
Gretchen: Yeah.
Itxaso: Then I realised, okay, well, this is my therapeutic portfolio, basically.
Gretchen: At least you know in your heart that you are valid. So, you don’t like the word “heritage speaker,” which I think “heritage speaker” does work for – we don’t wanna say, “No one is a heritage speaker” – but for you in your context, that doesn’t feel like it resonates with you. What is a term that resonates with you for your context?
Itxaso: For me, it resonates more – I consider myself a native speaker of Basque, or my first language is definitely Basque. We have a term for that in the Basque Country, “euskaldun zahar,” and it literally means – “euskal” means “Basque,” “dun” means that you have it, and “zahar” means “old.”
Gretchen: You have the “Old Basque.”
Itxaso: Yeah, you have the Old Basque, which is associated with the dialects or the regional varieties. It has nothing to do with age.
Gretchen: Okay. You’re not an old Basque speaker as in you’re a senior citizen with grey hair, you’re a speaker of Old Basque.”
Itxaso: Mm-hmm.
Gretchen: Compared to a “New Basque” speaker?
Itxaso: There we go. Mm-hmm. A New Basque speaker, right, which we also have a Basque term for that, right, it actually means that you started it in more new times, which for us is associated with the revitalisation.
Gretchen: That’s like your parents.
Itxaso: Exactly. My parents consider themselves “new” speakers of Basque, and the Basque word for that is “euskaldun berri.”
Gretchen: “euskaldun berri.” So, this is “speaker of New Basque” or – and the idea of someone being a new speaker of a revitalised language in general where you learned it in adulthood and maybe you’re trying to pass it onto your kids and give them the opportunities they didn’t have, but you have these challenges that are unique to new speakers.
Itxaso: Absolutely. And oftentimes has to do with the idea of how authentic you are. This is something that is being negotiated, right – these negotiations we’re having in our household. When my mom said, “I know the correct Basque,” and I would basically implicitly tell her, when I was telling her, “But I know the authentic one.” Because of that, those similarly wider ideologies, right, this is how my parents also, little by little, they were able to sprinkle their Standard Basque with some regional “flavour,” as we call it, right. They would change their verbs, and they would start sounding more like the regional dialects.
Gretchen: Are there different contexts in which people tend to use the Standard Basque versus the older Basque varieties, like either formal or informal contexts, writing, speaking, like, official contexts or intimate contexts? Are there some differences, sociolinguistically, in terms of how they get used?
Itxaso: Yeah. For somebody that, for instance, I consider myself also bi-dialectal in Basque in the sense that I speak the regional variety now even if my first variety was actually the standard. I use the Standard Basque to write. But that is only part of the mess or the beauty or the complexification because those people that started learning Standard Basque in the school, sometimes, they might feel that their standard is too rigid to be able to have these informal conversations. One of the things that a lot of new speakers of Basque are doing is, in fact, creating language.
Gretchen: To create an informal version of the standard. Because it’s one thing to speak it in a classroom or something, but if you’re going to go marry someone and raise children in this and you wanna be able to have arguments or tell someone you love them or this sort of stuff maybe this thing that’s very classroom associated is too fancy-feeling for that context.
Itxaso: The same way that they don’t wanna sound like the kids in the cartoons, like Doraemon, for instance. [Laughter]
Gretchen: That’s not how real people sound.
Itxaso: Knowing that a standard was necessary for our survival, for the language to survive, at least during those times, but at the same time, we need to get out of this rigidity that this standard might give us. The new speakers in many ways are the engineers of the language.
Gretchen: The original creation of Standard Basque in the 1980s was taking from all of these different regional varieties and coming up with a version that could be written, and you could have one Basque curriculum that all of the schools could use rather than each region trying to come up with its own curriculum, which is logistically challenging.
Itxaso: Absolutely. The Standard Basque was created, finally, in 1968, and little by little being introduced in the educational purposes. And the education in the ’80s, too, is when [exploding noise] bilingual schools skyrocketed, and the immersion programme became the most common one.
Gretchen: And this is immersion for kids, for adults, for everybody?
Itxaso: For kids. You start with kindergarten or, I dunno the terms here in the US, but 2- or 3-years-old, all throughout university. Of course, that went through different stages. Of course, there’s some degrees in university that might not be fully taught in Basque, but overall, little by little, I mean, in the past four years, a lot of that has been done.
Gretchen: What’s it like for you now going back to the Basque Country being like, “Wow, revitalisation is done. It’s complete. Everything is accomplished. We have nothing to worry about anymore.” Is this the case?
Itxaso: Absolutely not. There’s still debates going on. One of the big debates that have been talked – so we have sociolinguistic surveys that we wanna measure how successful is this standard, and what does that even mean. All the people who learned Basque in the schools, like my parents, are they actually using the language all the time? Or even if you grew up speaking Basque. The reality is that Basque revitalisation has been very successful in creating bilinguals. Most of the population, if you are 40 or younger – especially here I’m talking about the Basque Country in the Spanish side because the French side does not have the same governmental support that we do. The answer is that some surveys show that Basque is not as spoken as it is acquired.
Gretchen: People learn it in the schools in the immersion programmes, but then, the kids are playing on the playground, maybe they’re not using it as much, or you’re going into a store, and you’re buying some milk or something, and you’re not necessarily using Basque for these day-to-day interactions.
Itxaso: Correct. I remember when I was doing my own fieldwork and collecting data for my dissertation, I remember that I would ask people from the city because this is where the revitalisation was most impactful because this is where Basque was least spoken before the standard was implemented. That was a – oh, my goodness. There is this saying that we have that Basque is being used with children and dogs.
Gretchen: Okay. [Laughter]
Itxaso: And then I started to notice – and, you know, my sister, she uses Basque with her friends, but at home, she would use a lot of Basque with the dog that she got a few years ago. I was so surprised because then our interactions back home become more Spanish-dominant with time. I was like, “Oh, my goodness. Is this true?” I started to notice. In fact, some adults that would talk Basque to their children but also to the dogs, but later on, a lot of the adult interactions.
Gretchen: But then when you grow up, you use Spanish. You have this ideology of “Okay, well, it’s important for children to have Basque, but then you grow up and you put it away,” which doesn’t sound that great.
Itxaso: Meaning that the normalisation of Basque, it hasn’t started.
Gretchen: It has succeeded at some level, yeah.
Itxaso: Absolutely. But the work is not completely done yet. I don’t think it’s ever gonna be – I mean, when I say it’s never gonna done meaning that you always have new processes or new challenges. One thing that I did notice – so the last sociolinguistics survey showed two very interesting trends in the opposite direction. The first one was that new speakers, and especially young new speakers from the city, they’re starting to embrace Basque in their daily life interactions. They’re adopting the language and using it and engineering it and making it more informal. In fact, we have different standard Basques that are starting to emerge in one city, in Bilbao. Another one might be emerging in Vitoria-Gasteiz, which is the capital. And the other one – San Sebastián. There’s still a standard but with some flavours. People are documenting that. The other one is that in certain Basque-speaking regions or traditional speaking regions like my hometown, for instance, that the use of Basque among teenagers has actually dropped a little bit – slightly. I have noticed that, too, when I go back. I was thinking, “Why would that be? Why is it that teenagers might see” –
Gretchen: You have to think that Basque is cool as a teenager.
Itxaso: Exactly. I also noticed different kinds of trends. When I grew up in the ’90s, during my rebel times, we loved punk. We loved rock.
Gretchen: Was there Basque music in rock and punk and this sort of stuff?
Itxaso: Oh, my goodness, Berri Txarrak, which translates to “bad news.”
Gretchen: We should link to some Basque music in the shownotes so people can listen to it if they want.
Itxaso: We loved it. Little by little, more soft rock became more popular. This is still popular. But I noticed in the past five years or so that reggaetón is –
Gretchen: The young people are listening to reggaetón. Is there reggaetón in Basque?
Itxaso: That’s what we need, I think.
Gretchen: Okay. If there’re any reggaetón artists who are listening to this, and you speak Basque, this is your project.
Itxaso: I’m like – maybe there is. I’m not a big fan of reggaetón.
Gretchen: But it’s what the young people want. It’s not about you anymore.
Itxaso: Exactly. I do wanna hear some Basque – I know there is feminist reggaetón, but I haven’t heard Basque reggaetón as much.
Gretchen: Maybe someone will tell us about it.
Itxaso: Maybe it’s time to adjust to –
Gretchen: And to keep adapting because it’s not just like, “Oh, we have this one vision of what Basque culture looked like in the past, and you have to be connected to that thing specifically,” it’s that it evolves because it’s a living culture with what else is going on in the world.
Itxaso: Absolutely. This is where the making of what it means to be a speaker of a minority language also comes into play. I know that in many Indigenous language revitalisation processes hip hop music has been extremely important in the process of language revitalisation. Maybe we do need some Basque reggaetón.
Gretchen: All right. Sounds good. I’m sold. Basque is famous among linguists as being a language that’s spoken in Europe but that’s not ancestrally related to any of the other Indo-European languages. This makes it famous, but also, I dunno, how does this make you feel?
Itxaso: Aye yae yae yae yae. It makes me feel good and bad at the same time because it’s like, “Oh, you know about Basque? That’s awesome!”, but then, “Oh, we’re being told that this is what you know about Basque,” which is this “exotic” language, and I’m like, “No, no.” That’s the part that I’m like, “No, we’re normal, too.”
Gretchen: “We’re also just people who’re speaking a language trying to go about our lives.” It also has things that are in common with other language revitalisation contexts – I’m thinking of Gaelic and Irish in Scotland and Ireland and lots of Indigenous language contexts in the Americas, in Australia. There’s so many different places where there’s a language that’s been oppressed, and it’s hard to say what is Indigenous in the Spain-France context, but definitely big governments have said, “Oh, you should all be speaking Spanish,” “You should all be speaking French,” and you have to struggle to make this something that is recognised and funded and important and prestigious and all of this stuff.
Itxaso: Absolutely. And for the first time in the history of the Basque language, now we are considered a “modern” language – another stereotype that oftentimes – “Oh, you are such an old language!” And I’m thinking, “But we speak it today.”
Gretchen: It’s not only ancient speakers. There’s still modern people speaking Basque.
Itxaso: Yes, and we have a future. We can do Twitter. We can do Facebook. We can do social media.
Gretchen: You can do Reggaetón.
Itxaso: Reggaetón in Basque. We can do a lot of things in Basque. People associate us oftentimes with these ancient times from the lands of the Pyrenees and caves. I’m like, “Great.”
Gretchen: But you’re not living in caves now.
Itxaso: Exactly. And when they tell us, “Oh, you are this unique language and so weird,” and I’m like, “We’re not weird. We’re unique like any other language, but we also have similar processes.”
Gretchen: Ultimately, every language is descended from – like, languages are always created in contact with other people, so there’s this ancestral descendant from whatever people were speaking 100,000 years ago that we have no records of. Everything is ultimately connected to all of the other humans, even if we aren’t capable of currently tracing those relationships with what we have access to right now.
Itxaso: Even within among linguists, right, it has been debated – Basque has been compared to possibly every language family out there. Even Basque people, “Oh, we found a connection! Maybe we are connected to the languages of the Caucasus.” All Basque linguists just roll their eyes thinking, “Here we go again.”
Gretchen: “Here’s another one.”
Itxaso: This idea of also looking at the past has been very important to understand our existence, but also it’s important to understand that we have a future, and that one is going to form the other in many ways. When they say, “Oh, where is Basque coming from?”, I’m like, “I dunno if we’re ever gonna find that out.”
Gretchen: I dunno if that’s the most interesting question that we could be asking because it’s hard to have fossils of a language. Writing systems only go back so far, and the languages being spoken and signed much, much earlier than that, we just don’t know because they don’t leave physical traces in the air.
Itxaso: What is fascinating is that, so recently, there has been some evidence – they found some remains that, in fact, Basque was written before the standard or before when we thought. Initially, we know that the first Basque writings were names in tombs, in graveyards. Now, we actually have some evidence – or at least they found some evidence – that Basque might have been used for written purposes also and that the Iberian writing system was used for that. They’re still trying to decode.
Gretchen: Maybe we could link to a little bit of what that looks like if there’s some of that online, too.
Itxaso: It looks like a hand. The text looks like a hand, and there’re five words there. They have only been able to decode one word.
Gretchen: But they think that word is Basque?
Itxaso: Yes.
Gretchen: Cool.
Itxaso: We will see. I mean, stay tuned.
Gretchen: Further adventures in Basque archaeology, yeah.
Itxaso: Even for Basque people that is actually really exciting. That’s where the part of like, “Oh, maybe we know where we come from!” We’re like, “We actually come from maybe there,” or I dunno, does that make my dad less Basque for that?
Gretchen: And does that make the new speakers less valid? But it’s still kind of cool to find out about your history.
Itxaso: Yes, and that this history’s so complex. It’s also entrenched in our real life today. It’s still important to us in some ways.
Gretchen: You also co-wrote a paper that I think has a really great title, and I’d love you to tell me about the contents of the paper as well. It has a very interesting topic. It’s called, “Bilingualism with minority languages: Why searching for unicorn language users does not move us forward.” What do you mean by a “unicorn language user”?
Itxaso: Well, first of all, I have to admit that this title was by the first author, Evelina. I mean, amazing. What we mean by “unicorn language users” is that when we study languages, or when we think of people who speak languages, there is that stereotypical image that comes to our mind, and it oftentimes has to be, “Oh, maybe a fluent speaker or a native speaker.” But what does that even mean in a minority language context where language transmission has been stopped and then back regained in a completely different way? Then you also have these ways of thinking from the past intermingled with the modern reality. Who is a Basque speaker?
Gretchen: Right. Is it true that basically every Basque speaker at this point is bilingual?
Itxaso: Absolutely. When you do research with Basque, and with many minority languages, you have to do it in a multilingual way of thinking because if there is a minority, it’s for a reason.
Gretchen: You can’t find this unicorn Basque speaker who’s a monolingual you can compare to your unicorn Spanish monolingual – well, there are Spanish monolingual speakers – but trying to have this direct comparison is not something that’s gonna be realistic. Your co-authors of this paper are speakers of Galician and Catalan –
Itxaso: Also, Greek.
Gretchen: And also, Greek!
Itxaso: Cypriot Greek.
Gretchen: Cypriot Greek – who have had similar experiences with being – we’re not saying “heritage speakers” – but being speakers that have connected to multiple bilingual experiences.
Itxaso: Minorities, right. It all unites us because all of us had some experience that was within Spain. Either we grew up or we live in the nation state of Spain. What was interesting is that, as we were discussing this paper, all of us had slightly different experiences as users of minority languages. In Catalan or in Galician or Basque and also Cypriot Greek. I said, “How can we understand all of these complex or slightly different ways of experiencing” – and our experiences have also changed throughout our lives. How is it that we use the language – what associations we have, what the language means to us, or the languages mean to us, what kind of multi-lingual practices we actually engage in. At the same time, I remember that in the paper we also reflected a little bit on how we also engaged in our research in these unicorn searches in the beginning and how to unlearn that.
Gretchen: Because when you’re first trying to write a paper about Basque, and you’re saying, “Okay, I’m gonna interview these Basque speakers, and I’ve got to find people who are the closest to monolingual that I can,” or who embody these sort of, “They learned this language before a certain age,” because your professors or the reviewers for the paper or the journals – what you think people want or these studies that you’ve been exposed to already have this very specific idea of what a speaker is or a language user – because we wanna include signers and stuff as well – what exactly someone is to know a language compared to the reality of what’s going on on the ground which is much more complex than that.
Itxaso: Absolutely. I feel like we have to self-reflect onto how is it that we’re representing and doing research – or the issue of representation becomes really, really, really important. What is it that we’re describing, what is it that we’re explaining, how are we doing it. Sometimes, there’re power dynamics within this knowledge in the field. When you wanna publish a paper in a top journal, there’s certain practices.
Gretchen: And they wanna have a monolingual control group. “Oh, you’ve got to compare everything to English speakers or to Spanish speakers because they’re big languages we’ve heard of.” Like, “Can’t I just write about Basque because there’re lots of papers that are only about English or only about Spanish? Why can’t there be papers only about Basque?”
Itxaso: Exactly. And you are thinking, “Wait a minute, I can’t find a Basque monolingual.” Maybe they exist, but they’re not readily, either, available, or it’s not common –
Gretchen: In a cave somewhere.
Itxaso: Right. We’re like, “Okay, well” – exactly. Or maybe they do live monolingually.
Gretchen: Yeah, but they still have some exposure to Spanish even though most of their life they’re in Basque. And going and finding this 1% of speakers who managed to live this monolingual life – how well is that really representing a typical Basque experience or a breadth of experiences with the language, which, most of which have some level of multilingualism?
Itxaso: Correct. We as researchers sometimes have to pick. When we make those decisions, we sometimes do not make those decisions consciously because a lot of those questions might come from the field. But then this paper also allowed us to reflect on also thinking, “Why is it that I have to put up with this? This is not working properly and describing things that matter to us” – and matter to us as a community, not only as researchers. Why is it that my parents’ varieties do not get represented that well? Why is it that other participants do not make it to the experiment because they get excluded on the basis of just, oh, literacy, and things like that, which becomes a sticking point as well. Who is a unicorn? Well, clearly there are no unicorns. There are many unicorns.
Gretchen: Sometimes, I think that there’s an idea that being, say, a bilingual speaker is like being two monolingual speakers in a trench coat. The thing that you’re looking for, this unicorn-balanced bilingual of someone who uses their languages in all contexts and is completely “fluent” – whatever we mean by that – in all contexts when, in reality, many people who live bilingual or multilingual lives have some language they use with their family or some language they use at the workplace or in public or that they’re reading more or that they’re consuming media in more. They have different contexts in which they use different languages.
Itxaso: Compartmentalisation is very important but not full compartmentalisation either. There’s gonna be a lot of different overlaps – and so many different experiences. Another thing is that I think doing research with new speakers is important is because those experiences may change from year to year.
Gretchen: Your parents’ cohort of new speakers compared to new speakers who are teenagers now – they’re gonna have very different experiences.
Itxaso: Or maybe a new speaker when they are teenagers versus when they’re in the labour market versus when –
Gretchen: They’re having kids or they’re grandparents or something are gonna have very different experiences even throughout the course of their lives.
Itxaso: Even myself, me as a Basque speaker, my way of speaking has also changed or the way I adapt. One of the challenges in the Basque Country has been “What are the processes – or how is it that they decide, ‘I’m gonna speak the language’?” It’s a continuation. This adoption of the language, you don’t fully, suddenly adopt it.
Gretchen: You don’t adopt it and then that’s all, you’re only speaking Basque from now on. It’s a decision that you’re making every day, “Am I gonna speak Basque in this context? Am I gonna keep using it?”
Itxaso: You negotiate that because, obviously, when you speak a minority language, you’re gonna be reminded that certain challenges might come on the way. Some new speakers might like to be corrected, but some might not.
Gretchen: So, how do you negotiate “Are you gonna correct this person?” “Are you not gonna correct this person?” “Can you ask for correction?” What do you want out of that situation?
Itxaso: Some new speakers, they might want to also sound like regional dialects or older dialects, but some others might not. They create other ways to authenticate themselves and to invest in the language and to invest in the practices that come with it. Each person is unique at the individual level, but then at the collective level, things happen, too. Understanding those is very, very, very, very important.
Gretchen: The balance between the language in an individual and also a language in the community or in a collective group of people who know a language – both of those things existing. We’ve talked a lot about new speakers of Basque. Are there also heritage speakers in the Basque context?
Itxaso: There are. In fact, they do exist. The question is, “Who would these people be?” These people could actually be people that grew up speaking Basque at home but maybe, during the dictatorship, they didn’t have access to the schooling in Basque, so they might not have literacy skills in Basque – so older generations.
Gretchen: They might have things that are in common with heritage speakers. The way that I’ve heard “heritage speakers” get talked about in the Canadian or North American context is often through immigrants. Your parents immigrate from somewhere, and then the kids grow up speaking the parents’ language but also the broader community language and that parents’ language as a heritage language. That still happens in Basque; it’s just that wasn’t your experience in Basque, so you wanna have a distinction between heritage and new speakers.
Itxaso: It’s also true that sometimes if we focus too much on the new speakers, we actually also forget describing the experiences of these individuals that we might consider from the literature as heritage speakers because they don’t use this term for themselves.
Gretchen: The heritage speakers don’t use it for themselves?
Itxaso: Yeah. Or the Basque people that say, “I am just a Basque speaker” or a “traditional Basque speaker” but in a different way. They usually say, “But I don’t do the standard.”
Gretchen: “I’m not very good.”
Itxaso: Sometimes, they think that their Basque is not good enough because they don’t have that literacy.
Gretchen: Or they might be able to understand more than they can talk, sometimes happens to people.
Itxaso: Yeah, sometimes it can happen. Or they talk very fluently, but then they say, “I don’t understand the news,” because they’re in the Standard.
Gretchen: Finally, if you could leave people knowing one thing about linguistics, whether Basque-specific or not, what would that be?
Itxaso: I think that – oof, that’s a loaded question, I love it. For me, I would say linguistics is rebellion. Linguistics is therapy. Linguistics is healing. A linguist is the future. [Laughs] And minority languages have a lot to show about that. In this case, it’s Basque – or for me it’s Basque because I’m intimately related to Basque – but those are the key aspects that I would say that you can do therapy through linguistics.
Gretchen: Linguistics is therapy. Linguistics is rebellion. I love it. That’s so great.

Can’t stop thinking about when you said “Andreja… loves sprawling herself on the lap of her dearests”
The thought of her falling asleep on Sarah’s lap and Sarah just panicking (lovingly) hard but also feeling the same way as when a cat blesses you with feeling comfortable enough to sleep on you. This has plagued me and I needed to share.
Anon, the instant you dropped this in my inbox, it started living in my head rentfree so I had to drop everything and write it ASAP lest it plagued me too. Here's to ending the Haunting of Andrejarah for the both of us (impossible). Also, fun fact, the poem used in this fill is 'Parted Presence' by Dante Rossetti, and is the poem I used when proposing to my now wife.
Moments like these were rare and few in-between. The fire was roaring, her whiskey was smooth and her book was good. Barrett had all but dropped it on her lap, while Walter had snatched the quarterly reports, quoting that ‘she had better things to do than fill out those damn reports’. She had attempted to join Noel in her experiments, but the scientist had shooed her away, threatening to pull out Sarah’s newsletter to Constellation about the importance of a good life/work balance.
So, 11:00 whiskey and literature.
Apparently, she was not the only one getting chastised for working too much. Up above, in the bar, Vladimir’s booming voice chided Andreja. She did not hear Andreja’s response, but could very well imagine her rolling her eyes. Barrett must have acquired stock from the publisher, because no sooner had she turned the page, Andreja walked in front of the foyer, same book in hand.
“Forced leave?” Sarah jested as Andreja shook her head, a small smile on her painted lips. Sarah patted the spot next to her and scooched to the side of the armchair to give Andreja more room to sit.
“I know that it is coming from a place of…affection. But I do not enjoy getting told to ‘sit down’ and ‘relax’.” Andreja’s fingers drummed against the cover of the book. “I appreciate the concern, but I find exploration to be relaxing.”
Sarah nodded her agreement, letting her thumb rest between the pages. “So do I, but today, I will humor them. Plus, the book is pretty good.”
Andreja hummed and settled on the couch. Seeing Andreja attempt to relax was endearing. Though the couch was comfortable (Walter never skimmed when it came to the Lodge’s amenities), Andreja sat rigidly, her back straight as she opened the book with a focused frown.
Sarah returned to her whiskey and literature, occasionally sneaking a look at the House Va’ruun.
Andreja had become a full member almost a year and a half ago and Sarah was still learning so much about her. When travelling together, Andreja’s brows were always furrowed and only relaxed when a fight was breaking out. In the privacy of the Lodge, her shoulders were taut, but her lips were slowly starting to loosen. Sarah watched (only with appreciation for her colleague relaxing next to her, of course) as Andreja’s teeth nibbled on her lower lip, before immediately stopping, as if expecting punishment. Her index finger trailed underneath the sentences she was reading, and Sarah caught that finger often returning to previous lines, reading them over and over again. Andreja would occasionally huff, sometimes roll her eyes as her finger traveled over the page.
“Enjoying the book?” Sarah asked after Andreja had returned to the same line for the seventh time.
Andreja set the book on her lap, her eyes narrowing. One of Andreja’s traits that never failed to make Sarah swoon (professionally, as someone who was very detail oriented and did not like to leave things up to chance), was how she pondered her every word. Certainly, with English being the predominant trade and diplomatic language in both UC and FC space, Andreja, as a non-native speaker, needed more time to formulate her thoughts. But the precision with which she chose her words was not only due to her linguistic level. Andreja loved precision. She sharpened her blades every day after waking up at precisely 6:30 every morning. Her weapons were always neatly arranged in the basement’s display cases and in immaculate shape.
“I believe that I enjoy the book in the same manner that I enjoy our journey. I am unsure that I truly understand everything—but I enjoy attempting to make sense of it.” Andreja finally declared. “My understanding of English may not be sufficient to accurately get the full picture.”
“Poetry is a hard genre to read, especially when it’s in a foreign language,” Sarah could relate. Although English was her first language, poetry had long eluded her. She’d forgone the genre altogether for a decade, until she could finally learn to read between the lines. “May I give you a hand?”
Andreja nodded, taking Sarah’s hand into hers. Idioms were very confusing to Andreja. And Andreja was very confusing to Sarah. The Chair blinked, her hand limp in Andreja’s hand. She should’ve explained that she was offering help, not to hold hands but… Andreja had accepted, had she not?
“You are very red, Miss Morgan.” Andreja noted while Sarah felt her face burn even more.
“Ah, well, it’s the heat from the fireplace, perhaps I should… Take off my jacket?” Sarah used this as an opportunity to withdraw her hand from Andreja lest she goes into cardiac arrest. She folded her jacket and let it rest on the couch’s arm, counting down from ten in a desperate attempt to regain some control over herself.
Andreja patiently waited, extending her hand to Sarah once more, before wordlessly returning to her book.
Sarah attempted to do the same—to no avail. It was impossible to get to focus with Andreja’s hand warming hers, occasionally giving her a light squeeze, which had the effect of sending Sarah’s heart thundering against her ribcage. She was not a teenager anymore, holding hands with someone who considered her a friend and was under her supervision as Chair should most certainly not have that effect on her. But despite Sarah chastising herself over and over again in her mind, she could not stop her eyes from drifting to the woman holding her hand, instead of the book she was supposed to be reading.
Damn it. So much for relaxation—she was certain her heart would give out. She set her book down on the coffee table and eyed her whiskey. It was a nice, expensive whiskey reserved for special days. She downed the glass in one go and let herself melt into the couch, Andreja still holding her hand.
“Are you alright, Miss Morgan?”
“Never been better.” Said Sarah, feeling as if she was on death’s door.
“Do you still wish to give me a hand?” Andreja asked, her hand slowly withdrawing from Sarah’s. Sarah squeezed her hand, letting their fingers intwine.
“Absolutely.”
“Thank you. I do not understand this passage: ‘Your hands to-day are not here, Yet lay them, love, in my hands.’, how can one lay their hands in someone else’s, if they are not physically present?”
“Wait, so you knew that ‘giving a hand’ meant?”
Andreja perked up, proud of herself. “Oh, yes. Sam has taught me that one.”
Sarah refrained from pinching the bridge of her nose with her index and thumb. “So, why did you hold my hand?”
“Because I wanted to. That’s what people who love each other do, yes?” Andreja declared nonchalantly, as if she had not murdered Sarah Morgan with a single sentence. Sarah’s eyes widened, her pulse quickening way past what was considered healthy. She loves me? Probably as a friend, don’t read too much into it, don’t ruin this—ruin her trust. “So. What does it mean?”
“Huh?” Very eloquent, Sarah.
“We are here, holding hands.” Andreja squeezed her hand for emphasis. “It is possible because we are both physically present, yes? You can see me, you can touch me.” To demonstrate her point, she brought Sarah’s hand to her face.
Sarah cupped her cheek, letting her fingers roam over the high cheekbones, trying her utmost to gather what was left of her wit to answer Andreja’s question. She gulped, fighting with herself to form a coherent sentence.
“It’s figurative, the author knows that such thing is not possible—but the poem is about transcending the reality of space with love—that love can conquer everything, including the laws of physics.”
Andreja narrowed her eyes pensively, her hand still holding Sarah’s to her face, before slowly making it trail down, by her lips. “Do you think it’s possible? That love would conquer even the laws of physics, the laws of the Gr—the Great Beyond.” She corrected herself, her eyes darting around the room to confirm that no one was around.
“I am hardly an idealist but…” Sarah let her eyes flutter closed for an instant. She’d choose Andreja over any artifact, she’d choose her life over her own, if there was one thing that she would not let this universe forget, it was Andreja’s name. Even if the Great Serpent, Andreja’s divinity, would kill her for it. “Yes, I believe that there are forms of love that transcend everything, the laws of men and gods alike.”
A smile curled Andreja’s lips, as she brought them to Sarah’s wrist, planting a languid kiss that made Sarah forget how to breathe. Andreja let go of her hand. Sarah stifled a disappointed whine in the back of her throat as the House Va’ruun got up, before bracing her hands against Sarah’s shoulders.
“May I?” Andreja asked.
Sarah had no idea what Andreja wanted—but all she knew was that she did not need to understand to love it—to love her. Half the fun was in trying to figure it out.
“Yes, Andreja. Anything you want.”
Her shoulders were pushed back against the couch, as Andreja curled herself in Sarah’s lap. It took a few minutes of adjustment to be comfortable, as Andreja was much taller than Sarah. But still, she managed to make herself perfectly comfortable, balanced on the older woman’s lap, one arm tightly wrapped around Sarah’s shoulders.
“Be careful, Miss Morgan, I could ask for something impossible.” Andreja spoke against her neck, sending an army of shivers down Sarah’s back.
And I’ll give it to you.
“Anything you want, Andreja.” Sarah repeated, not managing to tear her eyes away from the deep brown eyes that looked so painfully vulnerable, despite the levity of her tone.
“Read the book to me. Explain it to me. Please?”
Sarah Morgan could never say no to Andreja. Especially with those big brown eyes, so light in the warm glow of the fire.
“Poetry is very subjective, there is no universal truth to it.” Sarah explained, still picking up the book that Andreja set down in her hand.
“Very few truths are universal. I am only interested in yours.” Andreja whispered, before letting herself melt in Sarah’s embrace.
Sarah cleared her throat and the tears that were threatening to escape her eyes. “Two blent hearts never astray, two souls no power may sever…”
To Barrett’s credit, he at least knew better than to open his mouth when he found them, hours later. Andreja still sprawled across Sarah, the book still opened on Andreja’s lap. He was only allowed to snicker under his breath, Sarah’s eyes narrowed in threat as he took her glass and refilled it, before leaving with a friendly pat on Sarah Morgan’s hair. If there were any concerns to address, let them be handled by anyone else. Because Sarah Morgan knew the law very well, and knew that getting up and disturbing Andreja as she started to doze off on her lap would be worse than any war crime.
