So after last night's episode of the boys (which I have Several thoughts about), I feel I simply must say it again: Antony Starr is an incredible actor.

I'll hold off on my character analysis for the moment to just talk about how Antony Starr used his physicality in the most important scenes - starting with where he finds out Noir noped the fuck out.

Not only is he scared - actual, real fear, just like we saw when he first saw the camera footage of Soldier Boy - but he's hurt. And not just in the "ow that bruised my ego" way. He almost starts crying. You can see the tears in his eyes. When he leans in close to The Deep, you can literally see the reflection in the shine of his eyes. Another actor's attempt at this would've felt out of character or melodramatic, but with Antony Starr, the audience clocks it as maybe one of five instances of genuine emotion from a man whose most common "emotions", if you can call it that, are "murder", "sex", and "[preens]".

Which brings me to the next scene. I was already like, oh, shit, this is gonna be his best episode to date (which is saying something, because again, Antony Starr Is So Good). The scene where he's talking to himself in the mirror has so many tiny, beautiful expressions that say so much. My boyfriend fiance pointed out that the mirror scene was a definite homage to Willam DeFoe's Green Goblin (specifically the "Yahtzee!" moment), and I think it's fair to say that they're definitely on the same level (and Willam DeFoe is also So Good). For perhaps the first time, we see Homelander, stripped. He is entirely alone. He has no one to perform for; no one to impress or intimidate. He is only himself, but even still, he is divided.

...I said I wouldn't get into character discussion in this post. So. Antony Starr had two difficult tasks: playing off himself (instead of another human to work with), and playing two drastically different emotions. For the sake of clarity, I'll refer to them as Homelander and Mirror!Homelander.

We see Homelander's "last shred of humanity" more clearly here than anywhere. Antony Starr portrays a victim of abuse faced with his abuser, where their abuser is positioning themself as his savior. Antony Starr is a tall, sturdy man, but he makes himself look so small, so young as Mirror!Homelander confronts him. He is a child, scared of the world outside and the world within (Mirror!Homelander). We see Homelander sans bravado, sans ego, sans everything that makes Homelander the character we've seen over the past 2.5 seasons, and instead of seeming out of character, or seeming expected (in the sense of oh no the poor little meow meow had a tough childhood), it opens up a crater of emotion, of depth, of pity for this monster of a person. That would not be possible with another actor, I am positive of this.

Now let's talk about Mirror!Homelander. This is more what we expect from Homelander - big emotions. Anger. Righteous indignation. But it doesn't start that way. It starts soft, the way Homelander tried to approach Ryan - the way he would speak to a scared child. It ramps up, it borrows language from Stormfront, and it comes again to this idea of purity, of being clean. That humanity, even the humanity within Homelander himself - the humanity that has been more or less hidden behind...all of the everything - that humanity is the problem. This is an abuser talking to his victim; telling this scared little boy that he will help and he will protect him from the outside world (and whatever the "bad room" is, which I Will Not talk about right now, I won't!!!), just so long as the little boy does exactly what he says. Mirror!Homelander is the worst of what we've seen of real Homelander, and again, by another actor, it would have felt...overdone, or at least obvious. But Antony Starr's performance makes it clear that whatever pain he inflicts on the world around him (and it is a lot of pain!), he's also inflicting pain on himself, to the point where Homelander has to completely divorce himself from the source of it.

In the last scene with Homelander, after the fight, we only see real!Homelander, standing stock still in front of that mirror. What is Mirror!Homelander saying to him? How is he explaining what just happened to himself? How does he justify the fact that he ran away from a fight between his should-be-dead hero, his nemesis, and a naked twink?

What is Homelander doing to himself, that none of us can see?

Fearful Symmetry has me fucking speechless. I am hardcore fixated on Fantasy High right now but it’s always been in the category to me of “fun, silly, something I love but it’s not actually that deep”. However that episode was a genuinely heartwrenching and powerful piece of media. I’m in awe of all of their storytelling ability, especially Brennan. Holy fuck

saw art with a quote from a post about izzy, talking about how some people find it touching that he’s buried in the yard of the inn, but this person didn’t. it made them feel sick because he’s buried there like a dog. and just first of all yeah. at first it was touching to me bc of that sentiment that they’re keeping him near them, even in death, but the more i thought on it the more my stomach also churned.

i know djenks had the best intentions with how izzy’s character and arc were treated but jfc ya missed the mark. by a wide margin. like hello???? having the entire point of his arc in season two be discovering himself and growing into himself, hell even standing up for himself and letting himself hold on a little looser to his baggage and just put down the baggage he chose to carry on behalf of the man he loved only for him to die like an episode or two later. and the crew acts like nothing happened just. it doesnt sit right with me and it hasnt since the first time i saw it.

i know its for “plot” reasons, but there was no other way to convey any of this than maiming him like the family dog nobody actually likes??? like a grimy mutt?? without him LITERALLY DYING????????????????? AT THE VERY END OF THE SEASON??????? AND NOT EVEN HAVE THAT BE THE MAIN MESSAGE FOR THE REST OF THE EPISODE??? you had to stomp all over his dead body with a fucking wedding. yes yes good for lucius and pete i really do love them and i am happy for them, but its like they all just. moved on. and forgot about izzy. and trust me i am FULLY aware of how complex grief is, but still. it stings. it feels like its watering down the impact izzy had on everyone on the crew.

he and the kraken’s crew grew so close that they tried to keep him alive even tho they all knew if the kraken found out, they’d all be paying with blood. they MADE HIM. A PROSTHETIC. AND PAINTED IT. they cheered him on when he came out in drag and sang in fucking FRENCH!!!!!!! and then he dies and like 3 minutes later theres a wedding and another party. it feels tasteless. it feels demeaning.

and i 100% think djenks roped izzy and ed into the Bury Your Gays trope without thinking that through. elder queer man who is traumatized dozens of times over who just fucking came to terms with himself AND WHO JUST CONFESSED HIS LOVE TO EDWARD!!!! dies. shortly after that, timeline wise. thats the fucking trope. it’s literally right there.

AND THEN. they fucking bury him in the YARD. LIKE A DOG. in the far corner where they wont see it and be reminded of him every day. out of sight out of mind. they’ll move on and grow old together, blissfully happy, while izzy’s bones are the only thing left of the man who once was Israel Hands, First Mate to the legendary Blackbeard. he never got to have his mutual pining moment, he never got to find the true love of his life and grow old with them. he doesnt get to die fulfilled, with labored breaths, as old age takes him. he gets to sit and watch from the corner as ed and stede, his ex of sorts and the guy he replaced him with, live that happily ever after. he gets to sit in the corner like a bad dog and watch as these two get everything he ever wanted. just like the unwanted family pet.

it makes me ill. he deserved so much better. he deserves better than doggy heaven, he deserves better than being roped into the fucking Bury Your Gays trope too.

TVGATE 📺💖

1.) Glee- Ryan Murphy is my enemy and glee is unhinged but it is hands down my FAVORITE show of all time. I started watching it when I was in 8th grade and the chokehold it has on me to this day is unreal. Season one was lighting in a bottle and to follow it up with an even better season after that? Lea Michelle is also my enemy BUT s1 Rachel berry is so fucking funny. Glee is the reason I joined chorus in high school- like the impact glee has on me? Incredible. Just 10/10. I could say more but we will be here all fucking day. And ofc Santana is my favorite character and I hope Naya is resting easy right now 💖

2.) Sucession- This show ate my ass for weeks and the brain rot after I finished it is still going strong. I avoided this show for a minute bc hearing about it through osmosis was enough and the fans put me off. I started about a month or two after the finale dropped. Like fuck rich people and fuck most of these characters but goddamn do I love it. I blew through this show so quick bc the acting??? The dialogue! THE EVERYTHING 🥵👏 you just know that if there’s a party or a dinner or some kind of rich people bullshit event that it will be the most compelling shit you’ve ever seen. Boar on the Floor was so sadistic and evil and FASCINATING. Like- I wanna open these people up and examine them. I was a Kendall girlie during my watch and a Shiv girlie post-show. I will say if you wanna enjoy this show just avoid.. most men’s opinions on it. I’ve heard the most shit takes on this show it’s ridiculous. It definitely lives up to the hype.

3.) Lovesick- Guys 🥺 if you’re gonna watch anything from this list watch this. I watched it when I was on a huge Netflix deep cut kick and WOW. Very lighthearted and funny romcom about a dude that finds out he has chlamydia and goes down the list of his old partners to tell them they need to get checked. All of these characters are so lovely and you just wanna root for them. It only loses points because it’s unfinished. I would’ve loved to see where things go for Dylan and Evie 🤧

4.) The Haunting of Bly Manor- INCREDIBLE. Mike Flannigan puts his whole pussy into into everything he makes. The write is incredible, the mystery is so well thought out. Every loose end is tied up just enough to let the viewer still have room to speculate. Definitely not scary in the way that Hill House is but everything else makes up for that. The cast??? I fucking love Rahul Kohli and I’ve loved that man since iZombie. Victoria Pedretti is the love of my life and the way she plays Dani? The range she has to go from Nell in Hill House to Dani is so sick. I just adore her. And of course T’Nia Miller as Hannah? She’s the clear standout. I need to see her in everything I’m BEGGING. The Hannah episode is truly the best episode of the entire season. This is a tragedy through and through and your heart will break for every single one of these characters. Just a gorgeous piece of television 💖

5.) Euphoria (Season One + Specials)- Again, Sam Levinson is my enemy but goddamn is season one SO GOOD. The aesthetics, the acting, the characters, the cinematography!? When Sam has a passion project and a story in mind he can truly make magic. Also putting Zendaya on your vision board and then actually landing her to be in it is so dope. The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Pee While Depressed aka S1Ep7 is my favorite episode by FAR. So real, so funny, so compelling. Everyone showed up to set that week to make MAGIC. I don’t make a ton of fanart but euphoria had my ass so hooked that all I wanted to do was draw Rue and I sure as hell did. I was looping All for us for MONTHS. It’s still the #1 song on my Spotify TO THIS DAY. The special episodes during Covid were also so well done. Season 2 is dog shit so it isn’t included in this but rip to Angus Cloud because he was so special and the clear highlight of season 2 as Fez. (I could watch him beat up Nate Jacobs all day 🥳)

A huge honorable mention for the shows A Young Doctor’s Notebook, Chewing Gum, & The Bear (s1) because holy shit 💖. The first 2 are both absurd comedies from my Netflix deep cut era.

AYDNC stars Daniel Radcliffe as this doctor that gets addicted to morphine in the backwoods of 20th century Russia. It’s a dark comedy and a wild ride. I only watched it once and I have no idea if it’s still on Netflix or not but if you have nothing to watch and you want something that’s pretty out there or you’re a fan of Daniel’s comedic acting you’re in for a TREAT.

Chewing Gum stars Michaela Coel as Tracey. So 👏 Fucking 👏 Funny. The writing is incredible and I can’t speak highly enough about the way Michaela drops you into the world for a wild ride. Tracey’s pretty much in the end of that awkward transition period between your teens and adulthood. Just a really hilarious coming of age story that DEFINITELY would’ve benefited from a true final season. If you like Michaela Coel you will like this. She also has a show called I May Destroy You and I can’t wait to sit down and watch it. I’ve heard all good things 💖

The Bear is way newer and s2 didn’t drop that long ago so I won’t go too in-depth about it like everything else but INCREDIBLE SHOW. If you like food and sad white men and just- EVERYTHING about Ayo Edebiri then you’ll love this. Season 2 isn’t my favorite but Season One?? This show makes me miss living in a city. I just 💖💖 I can’t recommend it enough. Jeremy Allen White’s arms are reason alone to watch. I’d let that man [redacted] my [redacted] for hours like he makes me UNWELL he’s so gorgeous.

Byler Week, Day 4: Summer Love

I opted to write an AU where Byler got together some weeks before the events of season 3. And then rewrote Suzie Do You Copy with that in mind lol. I’ll post this to ao3 (bc it’s Finished for once) when I finish the other fics for Byler Week.

Being boyfriends is only a little bit different than being best friends, in Will’s opinion. This is partly because they can only really be boyfriends in the safety of Will’s room. There, they’re free to hold hands and sit far too close together—Mike writing poems (for Will’s eyes only), and Will filling page after page of his sketchbook with Mike’s face.

But even being best friends is now better than it used to be, with that last secret no longer weighing Will down. Mike feels like his safe harbor in the wild storm of life.

A safe harbor that he so desperately needs. He’s been having…moments occasionally, these past couple weeks. Moments that feel like last fall’s ‘episodes’—never quite so bad as then, he’s always aware of where he is—but times when he almost feels like the Upside Down’s presence is near.

It happened last night, at the movie theater—the double date. Max and Lucas hadn’t been aware it was a double date…but for the few seconds before the feeling hit, sitting with Mike in a crowded movie theater, knees touching and sharing an armrest…he’d felt like a normal kid on a date with his boyfriend.

Then that feeling, like an icy hand had run it’s way up his neck. Bad, awful. No no no no please not again. Like so many times last year.

Mike had noticed immediately. Of course he did. He’d immediately checked with Will.

And Will almost said something. He knew Mike would believe him. He’d drop everything to figure out if something More was going on again.

But…

But they were on a date. He didn’t want to ruin that. So he shrugged and gave Mike a wry smile. “Air conditioning is chilly.” Which distracted Mike and gave them an excuse to huddle even closer together.

If it happens again, Will promised himself. I’ll tell Mike if it happens again.

Afterwards, they left Max and Lucas behind to finish their own date (aka walking around the mall and window shopping together) and went back to Will’s house. And had opted to sleep in the living room for obvious, sharing-a-wall-with-Jonathan reasons.

Reasons that are now making Jonathan go to work late with lipstick smudged on his face.

“Gross,” Will mutters to Mike, who nods in emphatic agreement. They’ve both agreed that though they are happy their siblings are happy, it’s still disgusting.

If Will walks in on them making out (ew) one more time, he’s breaking into Jonathan’s room while he’s at work and drawing dicks on his posters.

“You’re not gonna think it’s gross when you fall in love,” Joyce teases as she sits down with them.

Will blushes and focuses on putting syrup on his eggs, doing his best to not glance in Mike’s direction. Part of him thinks that his mom already knows—whether just the fact that his interests lies with boys, specifically with Mike, or that Mike reciprocates that feeling.

A beat too late, Will says. “I’d still be disgusted.”

“Okay,” Joyce chuckles.

After breakfast, Will and Mike go back to Will’s room to finish planning Dustin’s surprise welcome back, and cuddle a bit. The talk doesn’t last very long, the cuddling too comfortable and lulling them both in a drowsy state of relaxation.

But Will glances over at the clock eventually, and realizes the time. Dustin should be on his way back within an hour. Which means Hop is dropping El off here.

“El is coming over soon,” Will reminds him, beginning to pull away from Mike’s warm koala-like embrace.

“But cuddles,” Mike whines, inching closer again but only half serious.

“And Hop is coming too,” Will adds, and laughs when that immediately works to make Mike sit up.

“He’s just coming to flirt at your mom,” he mutters, which makes Will groan and shove him off the bed.

“Don’t make me think about that!”

“Well you’re the one who brought him up in the first place!” Mike whines, climbing to his feet and stretching.

Will is so busy staring at the line of Mike’s shoulders that it takes him a long moment to reply. “Uh.” He shakes his head. “I didn’t want to make El upset by us cuddling when she got here,” he admits.

Mike’s face softens from teasing rage to affection. “I told you, you don’t have to worry about El. She’s not jealous anymore. She’s already said that she thinks she wouldn’t have enjoyed dating me anyway.”

Will shrugs. “I guess. I just, if I’d been in her shoes—” Which he almost had been. “—it would have hurt, to see the person I lo—like cuddling with someone else.”

Will feels his face go hot at his almost slip. He hopes Mike hasn’t caught it. He jumps to his feet. “Anyway!! We gotta get ready to greet Dustin!”

They’ve put together a poster—well, Will’s done most of the drawing, but he’s not gonna brag.

Mike does most of the bragging for him.

“Will made you a poster and everything,” he says, grinning and leaning most of his weight on Will, like it’s not eighty degrees in Dustin’s room.

(Will can’t actually find it in him to mind.)

“And whose idea was it to sneak up on me?” Dustin asks dryly.

“Max,” Will and Mike say together. And Dustin sighs, glaring out his bedroom door. Out in the kitchen, they can hear Max and Lucas playfully squabbling while they clean out Lucas’s poor eyes. Dustin sighs again and turns back to the rest of them.

“The moving toys were a nice touch,” he compliments El, who beams.

“I’ve been practicing.”

“So you were gonna show us your inventions?” Mike asks. “I’m kind of jealous, honestly.”

He says that, but Will knows Mike had the opportunity a few years ago to go to a summer camp. But he’d thrown a fit at the idea of being separated from Will for a whole two months, so in the end he hadn’t gone. Mr. Wheeler had been mad about it for weeks—well, as mad as the man ever got, anyway.

But Dustin brightens at the question, a bounce in his step. “Oh man, yes! You guys are gonna be so impressed!”

And his inventions are impressive.

It blows Will’s mind if he thinks about it, how smart his entire friend group is—but especially Dustin. He’s like a mad scientist sometimes.

Mad scientists don’t generally come back from summer camp with girlfriends, however. In this, apparently, Dustin is the exception.

Which is how the entire Party finds themselves trekking their way up a hill in borderline 90 degree heat, ostensibly to use Dustin’s self-made Ham radio to talk to his Mormon girlfriend, Suzie.

After a brief moment where Mike has to point out and help Dustin untangle a wire that got crossed on the way up here, the radio tower is set up. It’s a feat of creation, but Will’s feeling too exhausted by the trip that he feels a little bit annoyed by it.

He’s so tired, he almost doesn’t notice another familiar chill go down his neck and spine. Oh god. No.

But, he promised himself if it happened again he’d tell Mike. It’s honestly probably better that everyone is here, though Will hates to take them out of their peaceful summer.

He sighs and opens his mouth, but before he can say anything, there’s a crackle on the radio.

“Dusty?” says a girl’s voice.

“Suzie-poo!!!” Dustin cheers. “I’ve brought my friends to meet you!”

“Suzie-poo?” Mike hisses into Will’s ear.

Momentarily distracted from his worry, Will bites back a giggle and shrugs.

He tries to imagine giving Mike a cutesy nickname like that—Mikey-Wikey?—and snorts. When Mike raises an eyebrow, he shakes his head. “Tell you later.”

“It’s nice to meet my Dusty-bun’s friends,” Suzie says. “Though I can’t stay on long, I have to help my siblings prepare dinner.”

They talk with her for a bit. Suzie seems fun and good for Dustin. Will’s happy for him, all earlier resentment gone.

The moment earlier is still sticking to the back of his mind like slime. He knows he has to bring it up once they’re done talking to Suzie.

And indeed, once she and Dustin have exchanged their last ‘I-miss-you-already’ and signed off, Will opens his mouth to speak. But, once again, he’s interrupted by the radio crackling again.

And this time, it’s not Suzie.

Bad, Upside Down feelings, and some random Russian translation? Is Will never going to get one break? Even just for one full year?

Once Dustin’s gotten the recording of the man, Will finally tells them what he felt earlier and yesterday.

Not entirely surprisingly, Mike is upset that Will didn’t mention it last night. “Why didn’t you say anything?”

Will obviously can’t say the truth in front of their friends, so he shrugs. “Didn’t want to ruin the night.” Our date, goes unsaid.

Mike sighs and nods. “Sleepover at my house?” he suggests. “Maybe we have a Russian translation book somewhere in the mess.”

Will’s doubtful of that—Ted Wheeler’s detestment of anything related to so-called communists springs to mind.

Later, once they’ve torn apart the basement looking for a nonexistent translation book, the Party collectively agree to put the planning off until tomorrow. Talk turns back to Dustin’s new girlfriend.

“So that’s everyone except Will,” Dustin says eventually, brightly, turning expectant eyes towards him.

Will raises his eyebrows. “Everyone but me, what?”

“Who’s gotten a kiss!”

Then Lucas and Dustin are off, chattering away at potentially trying to set Will up with the (apparently) numerous girls in their grade that have crushes on him. The concept is, frankly, horrifying. Next to him, he can feel Mike beginning to tense up, curling and uncurling his hands into the fabric of the couch.

(Will knows now, from whispered conversations during recent sleepovers, that Mike sometimes feels a little jealous toward the girls that have had crushes on Will. Mike’s not proud of it, and it’s something they’re both working on—Will has his own tiny silent beats of jealousy towards Mike’s past crush on El.)

“I’ve had my first kiss,” Will blurts, cutting into the argument.

Mike goes very, very still.

“You have?” Lucas blurts, eyes wide. Then, grinning proudly, he asks, “Tell us about her!”

“Was she a good kisser?” Max adds, nodding immediately. She’s grinning.

Will feels himself getting redder and redder, desperately wanting to hide his face in his hands. He turns to silently beg Mike for help, but neither he nor Mike are mind readers.

No, instead Mike’s seen that none of their friends have an inkling of the truth and he’s beginning to smile himself. Traitor.

“Yeah, Will,” he teases gently. “Was she a good kisser?”

Will tries to kill Mike with his eyes. But his boyfriend’s bright grin draws Will’s eyes to his mouth. Eyes caught there, Will finds himself speaking automatically. “I mean, I don’t have anyone to measure hi-her against, but I think she was a very good kisser.”

That mouth curls into a proud smirk.

“Was she pretty?” El’s smiling softly, knowingly. She’s the only one who knows the truth.

This one is an automatic, honest response. “The most beautiful person in the world.”

Mike blinks, grin falling and face turning pinker. Will watches the color travel from his cheeks to blotch at his neck. Now it’s his turn to look desperately like he wants to hide his face in his hands.

On the one hand, revenge (even unintended) is sweet. But on the other hand, Will hopes he hasn’t made Mike uncomfortable. Mike gets oddly shy about being perceived sometimes. Probably because of all the bullying they’ve faced.

(Will wants to go back in time and break Troy’s other arm.)

El, clearly the most of observant of their friends, sees the dilemma and turns to distraction. “I would like to watch a movie. That’s a sleepover activity, isn’t it?”

Max nods. “Heck yeah! And since it was your suggestion, that means you get to pick!”

Dustin groans. “No, she’s gonna pick Grease again!”

El smiles smugly. “I like Grease.” She leads them all away to search for the cassette, turning to look at Will and Mike. “Snacks please?”

“Thank you,” Will mouths at her. She giggles.

Will drags a somewhat unresponsive boyfriend upstairs and into the kitchen. He sets popcorn to cook, then sits at the dining table.

After the movie starts playing downstairs (the volume is up too loud, Will can hear the Paramount theme music from here), Mike sits down beside Will.

“Do you really…think I’m beautiful?” he asks.

Will nods immediately. “Mike, genuinely—even putting aside my feelings for you—you are so pretty and handsome.” He smiles at him shyly. “And with my feelings in the equation, I don’t think I’d ever find anyone more beautiful.”

Mike goes a deeper red and leans against him, hiding his face in Will’s shoulder. “Thank you. I think you’re really pretty too.”

They sit like this until the popcorn is almost done, then race around gathering the rest of the snacks. They’re near juggling by the time they’ve gotten everything.

Mike smiles at Will and jerks his head towards the basement door. “Ready?”

Will nods, beaming back. “After you, Mike.”

Downstairs, Summer Nights is playing. Will can hear Mike humming along. All the worries of tomorrow (Russian transmissions, the Upside Down) seem far away and unimportant in this moment.

i think pb's most "unfavourable" episode that most people cite as a reason for her being a horrible person is usually the cooler which is interesting to me bc i think a key part of that episode is it's meant to be complicated and flame princess is meant to be there as a deliberate figurehead of this tumultuous kingdom but ultimately being sort of brash 15 year old girl under a lot of pressure as well who doesn't really know what to do. and in contrast pb is a 800 year old ruler and creator of her own kingdom. it is not a filler episode meant to showcase someone's villainry it is a deliberate and thought out narrative to showcase something significant. and it's meant to SHOW how unaware pb is and how far she will go to protect her kingdom against what she perceives as a threat (which is an entirely founded thing as well ... fp's brother wants to literally destroy the candy kingdom + fp herself obviously wouldn't but pb knows she is again a brash teenager doing HER best as well + the implication of the fire giants being used is that they'll create a "new" flame kingdom which COULD very well threaten other kingdoms) and the end of the episode is also meant to show that she's not TRYING to be unreasonable.

like her turning off the cameras she used to monitor people once and for all is significant and the following episode she literally says she's trying to calm down and not be such a control freak. she exhibits this character growth and SHOWCASES it IN SHOW and people who don't understand that are head in the sand style stupid and genuinely i think want to feel sooo smart for being like "everyone knows the REAL villain of adventure time was princess bubblegum" but they just sound like silly. bc she's not that's the entire point. you don't have to like everything she's ever done or said without being like that + you don't have to like her at ALL without taking it out on parts of the show's narrative that you clearly just don't understand. it's okay :)

pb is a deeply complex character who raised herself and was alone for years. she never had anyone TO teach and help her and the one time she did attempt to create a family they literally tried to murder her. she taught herself everything she knows and knew from that that she has to rely on herself and what she can create and has done so for 800 years bc she never had anything else, and she has a deep unwavering LOVE for her kingdom who she regards as her true family. the banana guards literally call her mom. literally all she wants to ever do is protect them and her acknowledging her own need to be in control and overcoming it is LITERALLY a part of her narrative arc that goes hand in hand with her breakup and getting back together with marceline !!! she is incredibly literal and analytical and thinks the answer to everything is science and can be carefully calculated and relied on unlike other people or magic or whatever else that comes up against it and that is PART of her character as a realistic bedding and foundation. time and again this comes up and she is working through and around it and OTHER PEOPLE are also seeing her side of things and what she perceives and they're coming to a healthy medium that is !!! the point !!!

i think people willingly bending over backwards to acknowledge the complexity of say simon's story but REFUSING to even say the words "maybe pb is just a complex character but she's not a villain OR evil" without frothing at the mouth is fucking weird. i think you just literally hate women sorry like. i've seen people literally acuse her of being a replacement/robot in the earlier seasons because she was so sweet like 😭 that's insane. she is a deeply nice sweet person she is literally made of candy... there's a point to that too. her being kind of silly at times either doesn't contradict her intelligence or aptitude to rule in such an unbridgeable way that it must therefore be "manipulation" or just someone entirely different PLEASE...

also ppl who say she's creepy/cold/robotic/scary or some variation of that bc of the way she speaks and reacts to things in episodes is insane and ultimately a cruel way of thinking even if you didn't think she was like autistically coded deliberately or not. someone exhibiting certain traits and acting in a certain way should never be "proof" of their secretly horrible nature if the proof you're using is steeped in ableist sentiment. i think her unwavering faith in science is really cool and i think a character being able to frustrate you a little is also cool and i still love her deeply. adventure time is cool bc the characters do feel and act like real people and us reacting to that is natural + the entire foundation of what it is to experience a story. :)

Would a potential writers strike actually affect Stranger Thinks production at all? The fact that the actors are all over the place for scheduling (unsurprising, they're all amazingly talented) it's very doubtful they will be filming episodes chronologically. Schedules have to be created from scripts in order to say who would be on set which days so wouldn't that mean all the episodes are written already? They've had since 2020 to work on the episode outlines (the part that takes the longest amount of time). The writing of a script from an outline usually only takes a couple of weeks (per the Duffer Brother's own masterclass lessons). Writers room may only have re-opened SM accounts last year after S4 aired but I imagine this far into the series run, writers room should just be airing out the final kinks with each ep under one/two writer's care.

It’s standard practice to have the writers still writing the final episodes while starting to film the first ones. The Duffer’s did talk about this within the last year and basically confirmed it is usually the case for them, admitting the writing process for s4 was unique bc obviously they had a lot of time on their hands to focus on it with the hiatus.

They started filming s4 in Feb 2020. Hiatus put filming to a halt, I think it was March 8th 2020 or sometime around then. Then in June they posted a picture of the s4 scripts complete. And filming didn’t start up again until Sept/Oct 2020. So it still took them another couple months, even with hiatus, to officially finalize writing those last episodes, despite starting filming already.

I think Noah’s comment about the first three scripts a couple months ago (right?) could mean that at the very very least the first three were quite finalized at that time, enough to warrant sharing with the cast to prep.? By now they could have up to the 5th-6th more finalized at least. But maybe more?!

When it comes to the writers strike, I honestly can’t say for certain.

I would hope with how hands-on they are in including fans by informing us about certain milestones in the production process (they will definitely announce when s5 is officially in production on their social media), that they would disclose how this could affect s5, if a strike does in fact come into effect.

I would hate it if the strike started and they just went MIA for a month+. I know the longest strike in recent history was like 3-4 months I think? So that’s a fear that I have I guess, of them just disappearing and not even giving us crumbs to go off of in the mean time for fun.

But the duffers are also show runners and producers and directors, so I wonder if that means they’d just use them in place of the writers while filming? It would really just come down to solidarity and wanting to stand beside the people supporting the strike, which I assume the duffers fully support, so would they even undermine the strike and work despite it? I don’t know honestly.

Best case scenario, if a strike does happen, perhaps they would focus on the most fleshed out parts they already have written and don’t need rewrites for. Early s5 scenes are also what they are gonna prioritize filming anyways bc when it comes to marketing and promo they need that stuff filmed before the rest so they can have spoiler free content to share sooner than later, whereas only filming like the major stuff near the end, would mean little to no promo with canon content for them to share as time goes on. I mean, have you ever seen an official trailer use mostly later content from the season to promote it? It’s not unheard of to have some later stuff thrown in, but more often than not it just works out bc they don’t want that later stuff to be spoiled before the early stuff.

The promo we get the soonest will likely be from scenes in the first few eps so I do hope that with all things considered, there’s a possibility they could get the ball rolling and film a few things. Especially if they had so much planned out while filming s4, like s5 opener I could see being something they want to get out of the way asap especially if they have that the most fleshed out with concrete plans set in stone more than like a random scene near the end of the season, which still warrants some edits and doesn’t need to be finalized anytime soon anyways.

With how active they are rn, posting every Friday with a little assignment for the fans, has me hopeful they are planning ahead and don’t have the intention to step back and disappear even in the worst case scenario? You’d think they are aware of the worst case scenario rn and yet they’re just keeping it simple and having fun. And all the while filming rumors are already starting.

I’m not trying to stress about it bc it’s out of anyone’s control unless they manage to meet an agreement that’s worthy of not striking. I support them regardless of my bias to have ST start filming asap. Writers and a lot of aspects of this field deserve to be compensated for their hard work and I stand by that. If it takes a strike to make them get some results, so be it.

the ahs seasons and what i think of them:

murder house - when u think of ahs u think murder house. its a classic. some of the most iconic characters, even now. one of my comfort seasons for sure. as much as i love it, its not my favourite. it as amazing tho

asylum - wHEN I TELL U THIS SEASON IS LIKE A FUCKING DRUG I MEAN IT!! its at the top of my list, best season. again has some super iconic characters. for me, as much as it weirded me out, i kinda liked the alien plot. was it the best choice for a side plot??? probably not but it was kinda fun

coven - this is hands down the most iconic season of ahs. its also up there with murder house for the “when i think of ahs i think of this”. again, iconic characters. it has a good plot, good ships, great characters. its an awesome season and i get why people claim it as they’re favourite. but watching this coming off of asylum was hard. bc asylum was AMAZING and this to me was just great. still love it tho

freak show - im gonna be honest, im still not done. it was alright. i liked it more towards the end (i have less then half an ep left) but it was pretty meh. the pepper ep got me in my feels tho. she was by far the best character that season along with dessie. it was decent, not my favourite

hotel - loved it. binged it in like a day. and i loved it. this is the season with the best soundtrack and setting. the hotel was gorgeous i wanna fuckin live there. the plot threw me off a little here and there but ultimately, great season. loved jpm SO MUCH!! best boi fr. and liz and tristan r one of my all time favourite couples of the whole show. it was really good i enjoyed it a tone

roanoke - imma be honest, it started out slow. but like mid episode 4 i think was when it started to get GOOD!! it was definitely the scariest of all of the seasons. but the cinematography was beautiful and the acting was spot on. it was beautiful and if im being brutally honest, was low key scared of the “murder” thing. like i would go down into my basement and yell “mY NAME STARTS WITH A T MOTHERFUCKERS!” but yeah, amazing season and super underrated

cult - FUCK EVERYTHING I SAID ABT ASYLUM BEING THE BEST! cult had me scared, in my feelings, blown the FUCK away by the acting. like holy shit. it was incredible. there were a couple of “oof i dont like that” parts (mainly with kai) but other than that, it was fucking amazing. i was sad finishing it. it made me like pace around the room, yell my ass off at the tv, and i was like ranting abt to my friends who had no idea what the fuck i was saying. outstanding season. but ill forever be pissed that evan didnt win an emmy for kai

apocolypse - its up there with the most iconic. like micheal langdon as a whole is just iconic. the idea of incorporating all of the seasons in that universe together was really interesting. its a solid season with good plot and i really enjoyed it. but i gotta say, my favourite part is that they made madison less of a bitch. dont really have much to say abt this season other then the fact that its iconic and that the gallangdon fandom is dying and we need more stans

1984 - i actually liked it a lot. was kinda bummed that there was no sarah or evan but now that ive finished it, i dont think they would have fit. i think its kinda underrated. it was funny and sad and honestly kinda wholesome. i am pissed with the brooke and montana queer baiting but im a marvel fan so im hella used to it. brooke thompson is the loml tho she is bestest i love her sm actual badass. also jingles needs a hug. big time. and that scene when bobby finally met his dad and they had a really nice moment (i was in tears) but then MARGRET DECIDED TO REVIVE AND STAB JINGLES IN THE HEAD!!! but it was a great watch!!

continuing to be a dick abt this show i claim to like i know i know but wow uh. they certainly made Choices during the roxie battle

roxie herself was really cool, shes a good character and i love how shes cocky and harsh but still a good sport. while other gym battles in this arc just seemed to be like “lol ash is CRINGE and FAIL” like elesa and hints of that in skyla, there wasn’t any of that here, when he was losing, it didn’t feel like everyone was just kinda watching in secondhand embarrassment, but it didn’t feel like it was drooling over him either. plus no one had to evolve to make it feel climactic which was refreshing. idk its hard to describe but tldr roxie battle managed to avoid a lot of problems i have with other gyms in bw

on the other hand though, that just kinda means it has problems exclusive to it. i feel like this battle is inherently held back by the fact that it so obviously wasn’t supposed to be the last gym. not bc its only there to promote bw2, but like… cmon, iris being his companion this route HAD to have been made with opelucid gym plans in mind, right? but now we gotta rush over to virbank, hit pokestar studios, and now the second gym leader in the sequel is his final boss. like thematically, that’s just weird because while we know that gyms can be challenged in any order in the anime, we still expect ash to have a similar journey to those playing the game. idk if im wording this right but like, i remember being 11 when i first saw this episode and being confused when i encountered roxie so early in the actual game.

and yeah this has been mentioned, but the 3v6 that he barely won by rng was not a good decision. it feels like it was done to make the gym feel more climactic, and while it does succeed in that at least, not only does it make ash look worse than he should for this point (ok i promise im not one of those guys who thinks ash should be hashtag hardcore and the strongest ever, hes allowed to struggle, but this is literally the season 1 finale and the climax to the gym arc. they could stand to make him semi competent.)

but the pacing felt really off, like with koffing, it took out boldore really quick, then unfezant gets kinda hyped up to be the one to knock it out, then it really quickly gets shoved aside so leavanny can rush in and knock it out really quickly. and then scolipede only takes two pokemon to take down in comparison? that doesn’t make sense my dude

and then boom, yet another reason why the rotation team is a bad idea and the anime shouldnt do it- ash uses his full team to “spotlight how far he’s come” supposedly. but then his team is boldore, unfezant, leavanny, pignite, palpitoad, and pikachu? only two of those guys have had consistent screentime and victories throughout the season and this is far from his best unova team. i literally forget boldore exists, i think hes shown it less than five times since it evolved at this point? this is not a unova allstar team thats grown and matured and bonded over a season, this is a group of guys that occasionally hang out once a month out of obligation.

idk. best wishes certainly is an arc where the writers sure did make decisions.

Hm... What ship to talk about for my little pride series today... Ah, of course!

I could not possibly do this series without talking about my girls! So today it’s Korrasami!

Chances are good you already know, to some extent if not entirely, who Korra and Asami are. Chances are also fairly decent you’ve heard plenty of people talk about what they like about them or how good they are. Honestly I don’t think I’m exactly gonna be breaking any ground here, but I wanna put down some thoughts anyway.

Allow me to paint you a picture. Imagine a 17 year old baby queer, only just starting her journey of self discovery. She hasn’t even fully realized yet that she’s a girl, at least not fully. Said baby queer is sitting in the school library and really ought to be doing homework with this free period. She is instead quietly watching the last episodes of The Legend of Korra on nick’s website (bc they got relegated to the fucking website near the end) with her best friend.

The entire finale has been a series of one freakout to the next, absolutely basking in how great this show was and how bittersweet it was to see it end. Then comes the very end. Korra and Asami, in the last minute or so, are the last characters left on screen. A shared look between the viewers, a silent moment of “no, no way, they aren’t actually...” The rest of the scene plays out, many more such looks are exchanged, each time increasing in both joy and disbelief. The very last thing we see is Korra and Asami walking into the spirit portal, hands clasped and eyes only for each other. The kids in the library lean back, taking out their earbuds and looking once more at each other as they start laughing, exchanging high fives, and then they switch to quiet “oh my fucking god they really did it” and similar phrases when the librarian gives them a warning about being quiet.

The young queer girl, who’s just recently come to terms with the fact she’s queer but is still just beginning to figure out what that means to her, feels a warmth she’s never felt before. A show she loves just ended with a gay ship being the endgame canon. She and her friends haven’t been reading too much into the setup in the last two seasons, it was real. Even having picked up on the foreshadowing, this is a total surprise. A completely unthinkable outcome. Queer shit does not happen in cartoons. Not ever. Not as far as anyone she’s ever talked to knows, at least. Yet there it is. And even though she doesn’t yet have her own labels fully sorted out, she feels seen.

My story is very far from the only one. Every queer person who saw this when it aired that I have ever talked to has a gushing, happy story about how it made them feel so seen, so validated. Korrasami is my ground zero for truly understanding the phrase “representation matters” in a way that meant something to me beyond the theoretical. It was the first time I’d seen something like it since I started exploring my queer identity. It was a story and set of characters I had cared deeply about for a fairly long time already.  Karolina from Runaways, Alysia Yeoh from Batgirl, and Commander Shepard from Mass Effect are the characters I broadly credit with trans-ing my gender, but Korra and Asami were different. They’re the first time I really felt good about my queerness. So here’s to them, and their sheer personal and historic significance.

They’re gonna take him to a dinner and Brian will be there waiti- VIOLIN RECITAL? Why are they ignoring him if he said he’s not into it? This will be the most boring birthday ever. But don’t worry Bri Bri will come through’ he now paused the episode on the loft scene because he swears he knows the song in the background but he can’t figure it out and no app is helping him. And i wish i was joking when i say that it took him 20 minutes to discover the song because when he made me look up songs listed for the ep, it was the wrong one. He is now angry at the band bc they are the reason he couldn’t find it. Now finally back to the episode. ‘Awww Brian is fixing his tie, didn’t Justin wear a tie the entire season 1? Would it kill Mel to smile at Brian once? Just once? Can she leave? I don’t like her anymore, she is far too negative for my vibes. Aww he told him to not work too hard. I agree with Lindsay but don’t worry he will show him his present bc this is all a pla- see! he is flipping through ART BOOKS! He is planning a surprise for Justin and i cant wait!’ And now it’s the beginning of Ethan and i wish i was joking when i said that I actually flinched when the violin music started. ‘justin…this is not this exciting so calm down. Is he seriously drawing him? *he paused on Ethans face* is that supposed to be a goatee? Is that…is he for real? Nobody on that set told him to shave? Oh I do not like the vibes of this. Justin only draws Brian, why is he drawing this lil shit now? *pauses on Ethan again* WAIT IS THAT BUFFYS BOYFRIEND?! Oh i hated him there. Justin, stop drawing him.’ (Please send me your thoughts and strength because i am physically ill at the sight of Ethan and now I actually have to suffer him.) ‘justin..why do we care about this dude so much? A lesbian success story? Melly, ill be the judge of that because right now i am not happy. Oh what a pretentious prick. Justin, we are done. The concert is over and we are now back to reality! OH BRIAN HAS A PRESENT! WHAT DID I FUCKING SAY! WHAT DID I SAY WAS GONNA HAPPEN?! I said this will happen and nobody believed me!! AND NOW YALL LOOK LIKE A FOO-….okay, I did not see this happening’ ‘….Emmett, you could’ve just ordered sushi. Oh debbie, is here too. Seriously is mel ever fucking quiet? Do these two not know how to mind their business? My god, mel and lindsay really dont know how to mind their fucking business! Why do you think s4 might not go forward? Is it bc of the backlash? The low ratings of se? The strike? Or something else happened? I'm not even watching the last 3 episodes of it means s4 will be canceled.My hope is that at best it will get 4 episodes and that's it. Like the rats spin off that was supposed to be a mini series and film for 6 months but the filming was wrapped in just two months. Lol. lol basically everything you just said... i think backlash and the negative reviews. unfortunately we don't really know how ratings have been impacted because netflix isn't in the habit of releasing that data. but we all know they've cancelled better shows for far less, so we'll see. i hate to see it crash and burn like this because i absolutely love season 1 - i think it was genuinely on par with an HBO level production in many many ways including storytelling, cinematography, music etc. it took an absolute dive into the gutter with season 2, and by season 3 it's apparent that netflix is just shoving their usual garbage down our throats. it's really a shame and i cannot blame henry at all for leaving. they should have done whatever they could to get him to stay. instead he's being unceremoniously replaced and no one is going to buy into it. soooooooooo. idk. we shall see

it was Marjan's episode Natacha did an amazing job fr - I was a sobbing mess by the end of it

I love how this episode finally felt like they're all a family, you know, planning the party bc Marjan was coming back, and immediately knowing that something's wrong bc not showing up or not having her phone on is so unlike her - they know her so well 😭 - and they all worked together to save her and it was amazing

and Marjan!!! she basically saved herself, while barely able to walk, bleeding from her head and then after being shot???! she's so fucking strong and badass and amazing

(and I said multiple time that Mouse was amazing, which means - Marjan is SO fucking amazing)

and I love that we got at least a little bit of her backstory, about her family dynamics, with her parents not coming to her games etc (while Tommy sat through three hours of ballet, bless her soul, ballet sucks 😂)

I need an episode like that for every single one of them (but maybe with less near-death experiences pls 😂)

I literally loved it SO MUCH - it might be one of my faves episodes of this show ever tbh, so good (and to think my stupid ass wanted to drop this show two episodes ago wtf bitch lmao)

So my partner has been making me watch Sailor Moon bc we force each other into our special interests. As someone who never watched it as a kid and only got introduced to it as a 20something, I'm gonna rate and review the seasons I've seen thus far mostly bc @loveinthebones wanted me to (Stars is the only one missing).

Classic: It's the first season! And decent tbh. Really slow pacing for anime but the episodes are pretty fun and lighthearted until the final arc which punches you in the throat. Shinnetou are also decent villains (I love my evil gays in their tragic relationships and Zoisite is such a bitch. I adore him). I think this is like a solid 7/10.

R: This is where Kat and I differ. Kat has a love/hate relationship with R, but I really like it! Aside from the breakup arc and all of the other... weirdness, I really like Chibiusa and her dynamic with Usagi. As an older sibling I love seeing that kind of teasing dynamic where siblings (even if they're not really sisters) annoy the shit out of each other but would throw down for each other when push comes to shove. Also, the Ayakashi sisters are the best and Wiseman is hands down the most terrifying villain in the series bc of how easily he twists and manipulates. 8/10

S: The BEST season holy shit. Haruka and Michiru are my beloveds and this is where the plot actually starts to get more meat to it and you get more lore about the characters' histories. Hotaru is also baby and I love her. I love seeing the insight into the outer senshi vs the inners and how their ideologies differ, and seeing how Usagi reacts when faced w the prospect of potentially having to sacrifice someone for the greater good. Also EVIL STUPID SCIENTIST DILF. 10/10

SuperS: The world's longest and most uncomfortable horse girl movie. I know that Helios is like physiologically 13 according to the wiki but... he's thousands of years old, drawn *like that* and also he's a fucking horse (don't get me started on the whole "I can't be with you as an adult... plus you must NEVER tell anyone about our relationship" thing). Plus the themes of the season (w/ the Amazon trio being creeps toward their targets, w/ the way victims react to having their dream mirrors taken, etc) it's a no from me. At least some of the villains are funny. 1/10

drew was off across the country in new york shooting for a new project, and he left you home by yourself for a month and a half. you missed him like crazy, but thankfully, you counted down the days until outer banks season 2 came out and you totally forgot that was the same day drew came home.

you prepared yourself for the new season, watching the last episode of the first season to refresh your memory. you sat on the couch with comfort snacks and drinks, as well as a blanket while you snuggled in drew's sweatshirt.

you took out your phone and smiled, zooming in on the tv as drew appeared on it, posting it to your instagram story and gushing about how proud you are of him. the blinds were shut, volume up, you were in your own watch party.

drew waited at the airport for nearly an hour as he waited for you, trying to text and call you but your phone was on do not disturb in the other room. he called an uber and headed home, still texting you.

meanwhile, you sat on the couch crying at john b crying that sarah was dead. you shook your head and muttered rafe's voice under your breath. "i hate that he's so hot" you bit your nail as you watched rafe and ward sit in an office. you admire drew's acting, jaw dropping at how rafe said he didn't feel bad for shooting sarah.

drew walked into the apartment, about to announce he was home but he heard his voice on the tv. he peered around the wall and saw you on the couch watching outer banks. drew closed the door softly, taking out his phone and recording you watching the show.

"rafe i hate that you're so sexy, because now i kind of feel bad for the fucker" you mutter to yourself- so you thought.

"oh is he?" you jump 3 feet out of your skin and smile widely, pausing the show and running over to your boyfriend and jumping on him. drew set his phone down and held your waist as he kissed you. "you forgot about me" he mumbled and you pulled away, standing up and covering your mouth.

"oh my god, i'm so sorry, baby. drew i'm so sorry" tears formed in your eyes as you felt horrible for forgetting he came home today and that you were going to drive him home. drew laughed and held your face, wiping your eyes.

"oh stop that, i'm not mad at you. technically you did see me today" he nodded towards the tv and you gasp, hitting his chest and placing your hands on your hips. "what did i do!?"

"you are such a phenomenal actor and i can't help but love rafe 'cause i love you. but i feel for rafe, you know?" you ramble and he nods, putting his clothes in the washer and you sat on top of the dryer as you talked about your thoughts and theories. "i don't think rafe is a bad guy, i just think he tries too hard to impress ward and that's what fucks him up"

drew closed the lid of the washing machine and listened to you with a smile. you realized you were rambling and closed your mouth, drew helping you down. "how far are you? i didn't get the chance to watch it yet"

"you want to watch outer banks with me?" you beam and he laughs and nods, kissing your head. "you're the best boyfriend"

"oh i try" you two sit on the couch and you pick up the remote, looking at him and he raises his eyebrows.

"are you sure you want to watch this? we don't have to if you know what happens?" you ask and he nods, hand on your thigh and kissing you softly.

"i know some things that happen, plus i want to see your reactions to the things i do know about" drew winks and you groan, starting episode 1 again.

surprisingly, drew binged all of the new season with you. you look at drew with your jaw open, and drew laughs. "is that blonde lady his mom?! and his dad is alive?!" you exclaim and he nods. "also.. can we talk about how sexy it was that rafe could hold that heavy ass gold cross himself? kudos, baby" you wink and he laughs.

"well? did you like it?" he asked and took a sip of his water, and you adjust yourself and sit in his lap.

"i have a few more observations. the way rafe just stood there with his finger shaking over the trigger, he could've easily shot them all dead. but he didn't! somewhere in his mind, normal rafe is still in there. he needs help! and his piece of shit faking his own death dad refused to help him!" you exclaim and drew nods, intently listening to you.

"can i just say how incredibly cute and sexy it is how you observe things so well? and how you're so focused on rafe" he winked and you rolled your eyes, arm around his neck.

"how can i not be? my sexy ass boyfriend plays rafe cameron, i can't not be focused on rafe. plus, he really does have potential! he just needs help! i'll help him for fuck's sake!" you joke and drew laughed, shaking his head.

"as much as i love this conversation, do you want to move it to the bedroom? somewhere much more comfortable?" drew suggested and you nod, drew snuggling himself under the covers.

"sarah really needs a hug" you mumble into the pillow and drew nods. "okay, no more outer banks talk, i'll let you sleep" you lean over and kiss him softly, then his nose and finally his forehead. "goodnight, baby. i'm so beyond proud of you and proud to call you my boyfriend. i love you"

"i love you more, baby. thank you" drew mumbled with his eyes still closed, and you comb your fingers through his hair as he quickly falls asleep. you text in a group chat about the new season, and they all chime in and ask you how you liked it, since you weren't an actor on the show. you stayed up 2 hours after drew fell asleep, talking with everyone about the new season and how you loved it, congratulating everyone and praising them for their wonderful performances.
