At long last! It’s been a while since my last post, although I’m sure I could probably start every post by saying that. Warhammer has taken a back-burner position in my life for the past few months. I haven’t played a game of 40k since October! If I’m honest, this is primarily because of money. I’ll spare everyone the rant and say that 40k’s prohibitively expensive nature has become, well, prohibiting, I guess. But that being said, the fixation always returns. And return it has! In the last however-many-months since my last post, I’ve spent most of my 40k time playing Kill Team and avoiding finishing my reading of Angron: The Red Angel, but I’ve done a little bit of fun stuff on the side that I’d like to share.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First time using colored primer went pretty well! Certainly saved me a lot of time and Mephiston Red paint
Angron is progressing! Since my last post I’ve primed him and most of his subassemblies. I’m painting him sort of in half, with his left arm and wing detached, as well as his bronze armor plating. I’m doing this so that I can get in and color the backsides of his wings properly.
This guy has been a big challenge so far. A model this large is both imposing and resource-intensive, and I’ve done literally no painting as of recent, so I’m likely not going to finish him for a long while, but I’m excited for when I eventually do.
Tumblr media
Formerly known as Urayen’s Reavers, the Eclipse Cavaliers are a band of opportunistic Aeldari Corsairs who all seek one thing and one thing alone: profit
Moving on. As I mentioned previously, I started playing Kill Team this year, and I gotta say, KT fucking rocks! The rules are super approachable and the small scale of the game allows for much more focused and cinematic battles. It’s also a lot quicker, which makes it much easier to get pickup games in, which means I can actually play some 40k sometimes nowadays.
These xenos boys are known as the Eclipse Cavaliers. They’re a band of scumbag Corsairs and my squad of choice. I’ve written a lot of backstory for these boys so as to texture my games a bit more for myself, so I’m gonna put all that stuff in another post where I can talk about these characters in a bit more detail.
Tumblr media
The 2nd Company is lead by the boisterous Captain Zaraf Gorfried Redfale. They specialize in the utilization of heavy war implements, such as Gravis armor, tanks, and artillery vehicles
Now that we’re onto more conceptual subject matter, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about how the Thunderbearers actually function as a Chapter. Each Company of the Thunderbearers controls a massive warfleet—much larger than the average fleet of most Successor Chapters—and acts as a semi-autonomous fighting force in and of itself, with the ability to prosecute independent campaigns so long as they remain aligned and in accordance with the Chapter as a whole. The 1st Company is functionally the “core” of the Chapter, made up of the Chapter’s command fleet, veteran company, and portions of the 10th.
The 2nd Company is technically the first of the Chapter’s autonomous fighting forces, and they’re also the only Company for which I own a Captain (the big Gravis fucker who I show off pretty often). The 2nd Company’s culture can largely be sourced to that of a feudal desert world known as Manticore. As the 2nd Company makes up a good amount of the Chapter’s infantry regiments, I felt it necessary to give them their own heraldry.
The special heraldry on their armor pays respect to Manticore in a few different ways. First and foremost, the red armor is a visual homage to the cold, crimson dunes that cover Manticore, but secondarily, it is a holdover tradition that comes from Manticoran warrior culture, wherein it was standard practice to color one’s armor with any number of red pigments so as to camouflage themselves in the dunes. Over time, different colorations of red grew to signify different things, with the 2nd Company’s crimson and gold coming to represent wealth and nobility.
I think that having a squad or two with a splash of red will really make my Space Marines pop out a little bit, and will definitely add some variation into my annoyingly uniform army. I’m thinking of doing little streaks of red on a few of the vehicles, as well, which will make them stand out too.
Tumblr media
Speaking of vehicles, the Thunderbearers have received some reinforcements!
This is a Ballistus Dreadnought that I got my hands on through a friend of mine who was selling his Astartes. I kitbashed him a little but tried not to overdo it with the baubles, since my Redemptor is a bit of a piece. Design-wise, I tried to make this a sort of “Primaris update” of one of my first models, Big Harold.
Tumblr media
The Aurum Eternatus, one of the Chapter’s most sanctified relics, is a Venerable Dreadnought whose chassis contains the body of the previous fallen Chapter-Master
The thing that I like the most about the Venerable Dreadnought is the ornate look to it. It’s got a lot of trim and fancy panels everywhere and kind of looks like a church-mech.
This aesthetic choice is most noticeable in the lascannon, in my opinion. Combined with the gold trim, the cool indented archway designs on the side panel of the las sorta gives “Gothic castle wall.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While I couldn’t really replicate the trim, I did use a bunch of bits from the Venerable Dreadnought kit to up the Gothic factor. There’s also a noticeable lack of purity seals on Big Harold, which was something that I absolutely had to remedy. There’s 7 seals! Now we’ve got a proper 7-times blessed Primaris-scale lascannon to snipe tanks with.
Harold has sort of fallen out of use in my lists recently because, uh, Venerable Dreadnoughts do not exist anymore. Awesome! The older Dreads just aren’t as good as Redemptors as well, so Harold has sort of retired to a more ritualistic position on the Chapter.
In his stead, though, we’ve got quite a few new additions to the army alongside our Ballistus. Not included here is another drop pod and a bunch of new infantry units.
Tumblr media
Sternguard Veterans of the Thunderbearers 1st Company
Here’s one of ‘em! This is my first squad of Sternguard Veterans, but I’m in the process of building another. Like the Ballistus, these dudes are as of yet unnamed, but I like them quite a bit! To be critical, though, I think I overdid it with some of the bits, but I’m sure the silhouettes will look less obnoxious once they’re all painted and voluminous.
My favorite of the bunch is probably the Veteran Sergeant. His heroic pose and classic bits give “default Space Marine.” And the Veteran on the left is using a bit of a unique shoulder pad that may or may not be a cleansed and sanctified Chaos relic, which may or may not be a common practice in the Thunderbearers Reclusiam Cataegis.
Next post will include the Eclipse Cavaliers and a new Thunderbearers character guy.

After the Bullrope match between Wayne and Sawyer, Thunderbear stumbled onto the stage his face covered in that same black substance knowing Lilith was behind it. At Mercury Rising, we will get sawyer taking on Thunderbear. what kind of shape will Thunderbear be in?
Panthro vs O'riley Chambers
Last show we seen O'riley Chambers defeat Genophage member Silas McCarthy. At Mercury Rising will the same happen to Panthro? Will this be Panthro's last chance to gain respect from his fellow Genophage members?
PWX Three Rivers Championship - Lestat vs Slice
Lestat's been on a tear recently but he will face his toughest challenger in Slice. Slice vows to bring more gold to Genophage. Lestat better watch his back because Genophage members never travel alone. Will Lestat be able to overcome Slice and possible interference from his Genophage teammates at Mercury Rising?

PWX Heritage Championship- Derek Wayne vs William Renee
Chief Thunderbear ran out during Wayne's match and distracted him long enough for William Renee to hit a vicious clothesline onto Wayne and Renee became the new Heritage Champion. Renee would defend the title against Pav Novak in july to retain but Wayne gets his rematch at Mercury Rising. Can Renee hold onto his newly won championship or will his focus be on former tag partner Vance Strader who turned on him at July event?
Coal County Crusher vs Thomas Mathis
While Thomas Mathis is working out in the gym each day, Coal County Crusher is drinking beer and crushing cans. Two different workout styles which one will prove to be the best at Mercury Rising?

Tony has a habit of nicknaming all his friends bear. There's Rhodeybear, Bruciebear, and even Thunderbear.
Clearly, since Steve doesn't get a bear nickname, it means Tony doesn't like him.

Spectember 28: Airborne Giant.
Rocs/Ruks (Accipiter Mons) are one of the few Jotunheim fauna that have found widespread success across the face of Arclund. While the Jotun’s flying cities have vanished into history their remnants remain and within the mountain ranges where their ruins sit Roc’s wings darken the skies. Brought as war mounts by the Skyblooded, the remaining clan holds own at least two of the vast birds.
Resembling vast eagles or hawks, their features are often patterned like clouds or snowy mountain peaks, giving them a disturbing breadth of camouflage for such immense beings.
The largest can have wingspans of nearly two-hundred feet in length and with diets that consist almost entirely of meat only the largest Wyvern species and True Dragons can hope to avoid their gaze. In fact Roc meat is considered a delicacy to True Dragons, having first gained a taste during the ancient battles between the Dragons and the Roc’s Jotun masters.
The Longtusk Mountains, the Bladeshorn Peaks and Boreus’s Landing are home to the largest wild populations, where their bellowing calls and intricate mating dances draw many eyes skyward. The Damai people of Longtusk gather their shed feathers as adornment and for warmth, while the Orcs of the Bladeshorn dare to raid Roc nests, stealing their eggs and attempting to raise the young as mounts.
Three groups of Rocs stand out from their kin.
The Kradian Remnants once perched on the slopes of Mount Entonos, where mortals once dared to chance for Godhood. While their home has long sank beneath the waves, the vast birds return to the sunken continent every ten years, keening and darting in the air, their obsidian black feathers gleaming with false star-light.
The Roc’s of the Mons Volantes are known by another name Thunderbearers, as their Storm grey feathers crackle with lightning that burns from within them, they dart amongst the floating ruins of this Jotunar city, and often depart surrounded in their personal nimbus, seeking whales and other vast sea life, though others have been known to attack the Wideherd Gnolls, soaring off with at least a dozen of their charges trapped within their talons.
The final exception, may in fact on be one unique entity.
With feathers the color of oiled copper and piercing blue eyes, this Roc has been spotted occasionally perching on the Great Clocktower of Svenik Majoris, the King’s Herald in Westcrown and the spires of Surtova-Cal, gazing down upon those going about their lives within these great cities for days before leaving in the middle of the night flying towards wherever the moons

Fredrick Spence (Thunderbear): Art as Acceptance: Carving and Creativity
In his talk, Fredrick will go into detail about his life, his internal struggles and how he came to terms with accepting himself as an artist. Since 2015, Fredrick has worked through his trauma and found himself through art. He found acceptance through art and the eventual acceptance of himself as an artist turned into sharing the joy and love of creating in the hopes of helping others.
Meet our speaker: Fredrick Spence (Thunderbear)
Fredrick Spence (Thunderbear) is an Ojibwe soapstone carver from Peguis First Nation (Treaty One Territory). After a tragic and traumatic experience, he struggled with mental health and addictions. Passionate about nature and traditional teachings, he stumbled on soapstone carving and found it to be the medicine he was missing. His talent and experience inspired him to share his art form with others. Fredrick offers workshops to groups throughout the country in hopes that it can change one person’s life.

Exploring our CreativeMornings May 2023 theme: ACCEPTANCE
Tumblr media
Acceptance is the act of surrendering to our reality, without judgment or fear. There are many things in our lives that cause us discomfort or pain. We attempt to change or resist them, to no effect. So we wave a big stick, keeping them at bay like a wounded animal.
Acceptance is weaving into your story what once caused you pain — and still might, to this day. You welcome that creature into your home, tend to its wounds, and feed it out of your hand. Acceptance is knowing that this feral animal lives side by side with your tender house cat of a heart, always.
Embracing what cannot change can help you gather the energy to change what must. Accept these truths: you cannot make another person love or see you. You did not finish everything before the sun set on another day — and you didn’t need to. Every moment will pass, the blissful and the excruciating. It’s the hardest lesson, but one we need the most: the grace to let go.
Our Lexington chapter chose this month’s exploration of Acceptance and Robert Beatty illustrated the theme.

Happy first rescueversary to Sergeant Wrigley B. Thunderbear! When we lost Koda to Cancer last year, we didn’t plan on getting another dog for awhile. Then, less than two months later, we got a call about this guy needing rescue. We took George to meet him, and the rest is history! Wrigley came to us with a host of health issues. He was heartworm positive, Lyme disease positive, had severe matting under his arms and tummy which was causing some hot spots, had overgrown nails, a double ear infection, and his right ear was so badly infected that his eardrum had burst, and he couldn’t hear well. He had also pawed it so hard because it hurt that he had caused a bad wound on the ear (see last three photos). Unbeknownst to us until April of this year, he also had a torn left hind ACL which had not been treated. Left to heal on its own, his body had developed arthritis throughout the leg. This was discovered when he tore his OTHER ACL this year and had X-rays before surgery. Wrigley has been a very expensive rescue due to all of his issues, but he is worth every penny and more. He is the BEST dog, such a gentle giant, a wonderful friend and attentive protector of all of the animals who call @blackberrycreek home. We still have more than $2000 to pay off on his surgery and are currently treating him for an infection around the metal plate that was put in to stabilize the leg. If you’d like to send him a birthday gift he likes peanut butter and donations for his medical care! We love you, sweet Sugarbear! ❤️🥳 #adoptdontshop #bekind #rescuedandloved #lgd #greatpyrenees #anatolianshepherd (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfkldCRJdv-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

ahh its me again!! my stevetony ideas are endless
tony has a habit of nicknaming everyone he loves bear, like rhodey is honeybear and bruce is brucie bear and peter is spidey bear, and steve is the only one who doesnt have a nickname. hes sad about it because he thinks its because tony doesnt like him but obviously the truth is tony likes him too much and is trying to hide it 🥺
Steve isn’t sure why Tony doesn’t seem to like him as much as the others. He’s trying so hard, too, to be as good a friend to Tony as Rhodey or Bruce are, and most days he thinks they’re doing pretty well. Tony smiles at him, jokes with him, spars with him, eats lunch with him… They actually hang out together all the time, and yet Steve can’t help but think that Tony’s just humouring him, pretending to be friends for the sake of the team.
He knows it doesn’t make any sense. Tony’s a busy man. If he doesn’t like Steve he wouldn’t be spending so much time with him when he could and should be focusing on other things that are more important.
But Steve can’t help this feeling when he’s the only one who doesn’t get a cutesy bear nickname.
Every time Rhodey comes to visit, Tony greets him with an “I’ve missed you, Rhodeybear!”
When he’s in the lab with Bruce, doing whatever it is that geniuses do together, Tony tells him, “Thanks, Bruciebear” whenever he’s handed a new set of data.
Even Natasha gets a “Be nice to me, Nattybear!” when she joins their sparring sessions, and she even lets Tony off the hook for it.
Meanwhile, Steve gets called Capsicle or Iced Cappuccino or Capri-sun. What he wouldn’t give to hear Tony call him Steviebear. Hell, at this point, he’d even settle for Capybara.
He’s doing his best to destroy a punching back after passing by the living room earlier and overhearing a familiar voice tell Thor, “I’m gonna kick your ass at this game, Thunderbear” when Tony enters the gym.
“Ease up on the bag, Capslock, and come grab pizza with me.”
Steve sighs and stills the bag, resting his forehead on it for a moment to catch is breath. He doesn’t respond to Tony or acknowledge his presence right away, trying to quell his frustrations so he doesn’t lash out at Tony.
“Cap? Steve, you okay?”
Hearing Cap again cinches it for him. He spins around and before he knows it, he’s confronting Tony.
“Why don’t you ever give a cute nickname like the rest of the team?”
Tony frowns. “What do you mean? I give you nicknames all the time.”
“Yes, but they’re always just variations of Cap. But you call everyone else bear. Rhodeybear, Nattybear, Bruciebear. Even Clint gets a Clintonbear, although I really think you need to work on that one.” Steve closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, opening them again to ask the million dollar question. “Why am I never Steviebear? Do you just… Why don’t you like me?” He finishes weakly.
“Of course I like you!” Tony insists. “If anything, I might like you too much.”
“I don’t think that’s possible.”
“It is when it’s not reciprocated.” Tony steps closer and takes Steve’s hands. “If I start calling you Steviebear, I won’t be able to stop there. Eventually it’ll be sweetiebear, then honeybear, then just honey, and sweetheart, and angel, and any other term of endearment I can think of, and I can think of a lot.”
“Oh.”
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable just because I couldn’t control myself.” Tony gives Steve’s hands a quick squeeze before letting go, but Steve hurriedly grabs his wrist, unwilling to let Tony just walk away now.
He softly brushes across Tony’s pulse point with his thumbs.
“You wouldn’t be making me uncomfortable. Call me any endearment you want. I promise, I’ll like it because it’s you saying it.”
“Okay. Whatever you want, darling.”
Tony leans forward and before he could say anything else, Steve meets him in the middle with a kiss.

Recently I’ve been trying to focus on getting through my incomprehensibly massive amount of unpainted models, so here’s another quick little painting update.
Tumblr media
Missile launcher bro thinks he’s part of the team meanwhile it’s a completely illegal model
Our first little squad of Berzerkers is coming into shape! I’ve got a bit more painting to do before this squad is done, but everyone’s got their trim, at the very least. Most of them also have red, which, when combined with the brass trim and the black primer, technically counts as battle-ready, since it is 3 different colors. Does this mean I can put them on the tabletop and play with them? Not without feeling ashamed of myself for never painting, no!
Tumblr media
Brother Kardon the Eternal, veteran of the Long War, possibly over 10,000 years old. So old and presumably powerful that he could easily be a Chaos Lord if he wanted to, but is so dedicated to killing at all times that he can’t be fucked to actually lead anything
Wally is one of my better minis, I think. He’s a tame but distinct kitbash and a fun way to pay homage to the ugly ass past of the World Eaters. He’s also one of the better painted models that I own. This, I think, is for two reasons: I changed how I use washes, and I started thinning my paints more.
Firstly, I finally ditched the fucking Nuln Oil. The new formula is garbage and doesn’t look good on anything except for metal. Deeply disappointing! But being left with no go-to wash left me wanting, so I’ve made the switch to Agrax Earthshade. Agrax Earthshade is magic. With almost every one of my models, I’ve been finishing their base colors and then promptly slathering them in mildly thinned Agrax Earthshade. Once it dries and stains the mini, I take a small amount of the base color and fill in the broader surfaces, brightening them and cleaning up messier spots where the wash had dried. This makes the recesses a lot darker while maintaining the cleaner look on the armor panels, and that contrast generates a very serviceable illusion of depth without having to bother with highlights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can also experience a glow up like this, all you need is a cape, trust me
Color-wise, I tried to paint Kardon as close as close possible to the original Wally model. For example, his Mark of Khorne belt buckle (that’s cute) is brass and his belt is red, just like the old model. His backpack is mostly red, with the… wing-connector thingies being brass. And while it’s hard to see in the reference image, Wally’s right kneepad has a silver Mark of Khorne on it. Kardon noticeably lacks kneepads, having a MK6 torso and legs. To maintain that cool little splash of silver, I moved it onto the Khornate emblem that Kardon uses to pin his cloak to his shoulders. Most of that shit is meaningless, I just felt like talking about my decisions because I thought they were cool if I’m real.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Raijin’s targets rarely foresee the Interceptor’s attacks as it stalks its prey from low orbit before diving from the highest heavens to strike. Once its locked in, it moves so swiftly that quarry aware enough to catch a glimpse of the plane see nothing more than a few red falling stars before they’re annihilated.
Anyways, enough about Kardon and his friends. Here’s an update on my Interceptor. This thing has taken so much goddamn paint and, frankly, doesn’t look super great, but once I’m done brightening and highlighting the panels, I think it’ll look great. I think the golden guns are really good and funny, because that’s so unnecessary, they’re fucking aircraft guns. It feels very 40k, like, of course they’d make their plane guns golden. I’m really satisfied with the Raijin, as well, and I wish aircraft were better so I could actually use it.
As a closing thought, I’d love to, one day, do a big ass 4000pts game with a full aircraft layer transpiring. Multiple gunships and Interceptors dogfighting, occasionally dipping from the chaos in the sky to raze the surface with earthshaking strafing runs. Would be cool.
