#to not send liam $ once she gets a job or a share of her 50k every month? to not offer him to move with her once she gets her shit together

Don't you guys think it's fucked up when Fiona starts dating and sleeping out of the house, leaving Debbie, Carl and Liam kind of for themselves?
Once she started dating Mike she would sleep at his place sometimes which I think it's okay, she was paying the bills and would leave dinner ready and communicate Debs and she was still looking out for them, they had health care and she took them to the clinic and all that. She needs to take care of her, live a life, sleep at her boyfriend sometimes, that's fine and healthy. But then she marry Gus and is often out of there, get together with Sean and doesn't even know what's going on with them anymore (aka "why there's nothing to eat in the fridge" "cause no one is doing the shopping" dialogue with Debbie, not knowing when it's their first day at school, letting Sammy move in and run things after her trailer got fucked by Frank), and then she gets her apartment and moves out completely and like, okay, Ian was a EMT, Lip is a mechanic already I think, she did said she wasn't going to support Debbie after her pregnancy (fucked me thinks), Carl's at military school, but Liam is still a kid! And Debs and Carl are still underage! And they are her responsibility.
It just doesn't sit right with me that Liam didn't at least moved with her.
Specifically Fiona defenders, I would love to hear more about it.
#i could he talking a lot of shit cause i only watched s6 and ahead once and it was some months ago but#i dont think im wrong. i dont there was any sort of explanation or reason or anything like that#she straight up left all behind to start fresh with her apartment her money her expensive chair didnt she#and i want fiona to grow! to do her stuff! to be only a sister to her siblings and not their mom! but she is their legal guardian#yes lip and ian definitely has to help family now. she didnt had to raise them the way she did until s3 but she did and they own her big#at least i think they do. she sacrificed herself out of love for them. made them go to school. gave them a life and some sort of stability#so now its their time to take up the responsibility with her. but thats it. with her. she dont get to abandon them.#mostly cause she is their legal guardian yk. and it was very strictly imposed and explained s3 its from here on until theyre ALL 18#and i somewhat think its okay for her to want liam to be in chicago when she left. she gave them money and he had there more stability#like she had no job yet no place to live he wouldnt have any family around to support him he would have to move to another school is a lot!#but to not make this move legally? to i dont know transfer him to lip or something? to not call and get to know how hes doing?#to not send liam $ once she gets a job or a share of her 50k every month? to not offer him to move with her once she gets her shit together#i dont like it. actually i hate it.#shameless#shameless us#fiona gallagher#og.#s9

Where do Ian and Mickey live 5 years after canon?
What do they do for work?
Does Fiona come back to Chicago? Does Mandy? Do Vee and Kev?
How are the Gallaghers react to Frank's death?
A cute little head canon you feel like sharing?
Feel free to send it to your favorite blogs 🖤
Sorry this took me so long to answer! I’m loving these questions and I don’t know if you are the same anon who was sending around questions before, but you should definitely start a question/headcanon blog if you feel like it because the questions are great!
1. Where do Ian and Mickey live 5 years after canon?
I’m not sure - definitely in Chicago. I think they end up moving to a house with a garden and that wherever this is, it’s a place that will be their home for quite a few years (maybe even for life?). Somewhere they really put down roots and build a proper, stable life together. I feel like it’s close to the other Gallagher siblings so that it’s easy for them all to meet up together. (Perhaps Ian and Mickey’s house becomes the designated hangout for family gatherings.) Wherever it is, It’s definitely a place that they both instantly liked and they both have loads of fun decorating it and making it their own.
2. What do they do for work?
I’m totally undecided on this. I can see them having fun working together and building up the security business and doing that for years and years. But! I can also see Mickey just taking over and doing the security business while Ian goes into a different career - nursing, social work - something caring where he can help people. Tbh, apart from their criminal convictions, I like to think there are lots of possibilities for them and they support each other in whatever jobs they want to do.
3. Does Fiona come back to Chicago? Does Mandy? Do Vee and Kev?
Ooh, interesting! I think Vee and Kev come back for visits but I think they probably don’t move back. I’m not sure about Mandy - I think there’s so much trauma there for her that it’s unlikely she would move back if she had built a good life for herself outside Chicago. I think Fiona does move back one day because while I think she needed to get away and live somewhere new for awhile, ultimately I bet she would miss her family too much and I can totally see her moving back sometime after the finale.
4. How are the Gallaghers react to Frank's death?
Tbh, I think they all have such complicated feelings about Frank that they probably all struggle to properly deal with the complex emotions that come with his death. Apart from maybe Liam - because he’s younger. I can see him being upset and so the rest of the siblings kind of maybe distract themselves from their own feelings to look after Liam. It probably hits the older ones at different points and maybe they cry or maybe they get angry or maybe they get a bit depressed. Frank was a shit father but he was their father and a huge part of their life. Also, although he was obviously in poor health, I kinda don’t think they would have expected him to go so quickly so there’s probably shock they need to get over too.
5. A cute little head canon you feel like sharing?
They’ve been living in their West Side apartment for a few weeks and Ian realises that they’ve only had showers and neither has used the bath. Ian remembers Mickey not being into it in the Gallagher house but he’s determined to try again. He googles romantic for different ideas and realises that a) they should have been back to chest and Mickey probably was uncomfortable against the taps and b) there’s lots of suggestions for bath products. He decides Lush looks like fun and he goes and buys a few bubble bars. When Mickey comes home Ian is butt naked trying to stop all the bubbles from spilling out of the bath because he put all of his purchases in the water at once and now it’s too much. Eventually, after Mickey stops laughing and Ian tries to throw some of the bubbly foam at him, they do end up in the bath together and Mickey reluctantly agrees that it’s kinda nice. And maybe they might have a weekly trip to Lush to buy one bubble bar or bath bomb to have in a bath together.

Hi anon I love getting headacannon questions it makes me feel so loved !!! I’ll add it under the cut becuase it’s kinda long lmfao
1. I see them living on the west side still but in a either a town house or small house kinda like the Gallagher but nice . Three bed plus , okay sized yard !
2. They still have their own business for weed/money transport but its expanded giving them more time off
3. Fiona doesn’t ( I’m still mad at her for abandoned Liam) I think she wouldn’t return unless something bad happens in Florida like she lost her job or house ect.
Mandy I feel like returns like once or twice a year to see Ian but stays in New York mostly
Kev and V never left I won’t let it happen I don’t care if it’s canon or not I hate it ! They still own the alibi and they still have their southside house !
5) franks death :
Fiona gets a phone call and like has second of sadness but doesn’t not care.
Lip gets emotional kinda like Ian did over Monica and finds it really hard for but he’s mostly grieving for a childhood he never got
Ian gets a little sad but nothing like how he was with Monica I just don’t think he and frank were over close .
Debbie gets really fucking emotional almost doenst know how to cope but once again she driving a childhood she never got and how the family is no longer together. Leading her to abandon franny and go to Texas .
Carl does a Graffiti pieces for frank next to Monica I think he gets quite for a bit but reacts the same as Ian.
Liam gets Bert emotional and depressed because frank was an okay feather and while everyone else is shitting on him Liam can’t force himself and oddly loved frank and I think he doesn’t know how to process for while.
5) Ian and mickey adopt a elderly chihuahua that kinda half blind and grumpy . It reminds mickey of a dog that lived near to him when he was in Mexico.

puppy love. thirteen year-olds holding hands and sharing stolen kisses. it was a sweet relationship that could’ve grown and matured with the two teens as they did. instead carl found himself a job on the corner and when he got caught y/n was done. fiona tried to get through to the boy, asking him to apologize but he brushed her off.
“can i please just talk to him? maybe he’ll listen to me.” y/n pleaded with the lawyer.
fiona stepped in, “it wouldn’t hurt to try it.”
“five minutes.” the lawyer relented.
y/n thanked him and rushed into the room where he sat. he squinted at her through the glasses fiona gave him. “i’m not fuckin’ sorry. i wish i was smarter about it. i wouldn’t have used chuckie as a mule.”
“you know what. if you don’t tell that judge you’re fucking sorry and that you’ve learned from your mistakes i will never speak to you again.” y/n exited the room quickly letting the ultimatum hang in the air as the door slammed behind her.
during the hearing her eyes were trained on the back of his head, hoping she could somehow will him to do the right thing. she kept her arms crossed as she leaned back. kev and v were sat next to her, waiting anxiously to see what he’d say.
“i’m going to make juvie my bitch.” as soon as he said those words, y/n sighed, getting up from her seat, shouldering her back and slipping out of the courtroom as they hauled carl away. he caught her eye before she left, she froze for a moment before shaking her head and making her exit.
time passed and she still spent time with the rest of the gallaghers, she lived across the street so it would have been hard not too. she helped take care of liam when needed and she got a job at patsy’s with fiona’s help.
the day carl came back had been a surprise for everyone, y/n was helping fiona with making dinner after a shift at patsy’s. the front door had slammed shut and, thinking it was debbie, fiona asked if she got a message about hamburger buns. y/n’s eyes shot up when a much deeper voice responded, “nah, it’s just me.”
excited, fiona rushed towards the boy, wrapping him up in a hug. hugging back, he looked up throwing a wave to y/n who was rooted in place, “hey, y/n.”
snapping herself back into reality she lurched forward wiping her hands and grabbing her things, pulling her bag over her shoulder and gripping her keys tightly she looked back at the boy as fiona fussed over his new appearance. “fuck you, carl.” she spat, slamming the back door shut behind her.
y/n managed to avoid carl at school the next day, he was too busy with “his boy” nick and his new white boy carl personality and selling illegal weapons in the bathrooms to bother her anyways. she rushed to patsy’s as soon as school ended and began her shift.
she spent the afternoon rushing from table to table, taking orders, passing out food, and pouring coffee. she was pouring coffee for a couple sitting near the front door when the bell twinkled, signaling a new customer.
her back turned to the door and her focus pointed and the coffee she was pouring she greeted the customer quickly, “take a seat anywhere and i’ll be right with you darling.” she smiled at the couple before turning around, finding herself face to face with white boy carl himself. “get the fuck out.”
y/n rushed away from him, pouring coffee for a man sat at the counter. carl followed, “please just talk to me, y/n.”
“she doesn’t want to talk to you, man.” the customer spoke up as y/n placed the coffee pot on the burner.
“what the fuck did you just say to me?” carl asked the man.
he stood up, “i told you she doesn’t want to talk. so leave.”
y/n stepped in before a physical altercation broke out, “thank so much, sir, but i can fight my own battles.” she pushed carl towards the door, “out.” she kept pushing him despite his protests, “get the fuck out. go.”
the door slammed behind them, and carl began to speak, “no, you’re going to shut your fucking mouth and listen. i don’t want to listen to you. i don’t want to talk to you. and i don’t even want to see you but that last one might be a little fucking impossible since we’re neighbors and i work with your sister so i’m going to be civil towards you but i will only acknowledge your existence when it is absolutely necessary. clear?”
carl began to protest but y/n cut him off, “are we fucking clear?” carl grumbled an agreement and y/n sighed, “good, now get the fuck out if here. i have to go back to work.”
y/n rushed back into the diner, throwing herself back into work. hoping she looked busy enough to keep the nosy man from before to leave her alone, she poured more coffee, took orders, passed out plates. until her shift ended and she could finally take the l back home.
the next run in with carl happened two days later, she was walking home from school, thankful for the day off from work when carl and nick pulled up on a bike. “y/n! wait!”
sighing, y/n whipped around, “i thought i told you i didn’t want to talk to you.”
“i have something for you.” carl explained as he got closer, y/n ignored him and started walking again, the bike quickly catching up with her. “here.”
y/n scoffed, eyeing the bag, “whatever it is i don’t want it.”
“it’s a book, debbie told me you wanted to read it.”
y/n sped up, “no thanks, already read it.” she didn’t care what book it was, she didn’t want anything from him. she took this moment to cross the street, the passing cars making it difficult for the boys on the bike to follow.
she entered the gallagher house hoping carl would be too busy to come home for a few hours while she watched liam. “i get off at nine, if anyone else comes home you’re welcome to leave but i plan on bringing something back for dinner if you want to stick around for that.”
“of course i’ll stay. me and liam are going to have a great time. isn’t that right liam?” y/n asked the toddler who nodded enthusiastically. fiona thanked her and rushed out the door.
y/n put on a movie, which liam fell asleep watching about thirty minutes in. y/n got up and stretched when the movie ended, adjusting the blanket she threw over liam when he fell asleep. she walked in the kitchen, stiff from sitting for so long. she pulled out a can of pop from the fridge and leaned her back against the fridge, using to stretch her body more.
the door swung open and carl walked in, “good you’re hear, i have something else for you.”
“whatever it is, i don’t want it.” y/n sighed into her drink.
“it’s a necklace, here.” he opened the velvet box to show her an expensive looking necklace.
she turned away from him, “no thanks.” walking back into the living room. “go somewhere else please, i have to watch liam.”
carl sighed before exiting the house with nick, who had been hanging back by the door during the exchange. he nodded to nick and the two rolled out to go do god knows what.
that night fiona came home with food, the entire gallagher clan plus kev and v enjoyed. there were enough people that y/n managed to avoid speaking to carl the entire evening. every time he tried to speak to her she’d find someone to talk to, she talked lip about something she had to do for school, ian told her about trevor, and her and debbie talked about anything.
v even pointed out the strange behavior when carl was left looking slightly dejected to fiona, who just shrugged in response.
“thank you fiona, goodnight everyone.” y/n called as she stepped out the back door. she crossed the street quickly and made it home, which as usual was empty, the rest of her family nowhere to be found.
she sighed, grabbing a beer from the fridge and kicking of her shoes as soon as she made it to her room. she threw herself back on her bed yelping when she collided with something hard. she jumped up only to see the jewelry box and book carl had bought her. she set her beer down and pulled the box open, smiling at the necklace. it was gold, with a small tear shaped pendant that held some sort of crystal or diamond.
she set the box next to her beer, which she grabbed and took sip of as she grabbed the book. it was actually something she’d been wanting, she rolled her eyes before opening it to the first page.
the next fee days followed a similar pattern, carl would stop her at school and work and even his own house to offer her gifts, which she would refuse, which would always end up on her bed at the end of the day. on a particularly rough day, y/n had enough. she was walking home from school, carl (who was alone this time) behind her, like clockwork offering another gift.
“carl, please just leave me alone. i don’t have the energy to deal with you.” y/n said not stopping. carl made a comment and y/n snapped, “god i’m not going to forgive you because you chose to go to juvie. you could have just apologized and gotten parole but that didn’t happen. and i’m not going to be your girlfriend again because i don’t even know who you are any more, this thug personality doesn’t look good on you.” y/n sighed rushing away before he could answer.
she was suddenly thankful for the day off, deciding to spend it all alone at home. it was a friday and her weekend was also free so she spent the next few days home alone. her family was gone of course, they only only seemed to show up once a month just to leave again the same day.
sunday evening y/n laid in the couch watching what was on tv when there was a knock on the door. y/n groaned, getting up to answer it freezing when carl was revealed on the other side. he looked small, he was curled into himself and he looked sad. his braids were out, soft curls in the place. “hey, y/n.” he said softly. y/n wordlessly moved out of the way to let him in.
“i’m done. no more sell drugs, guns, anything. something happened, with nick and i don’t want that to be my life anymore.” his voice cracked and y/n instinctively wrapped him into a hug, squeezing protectively. he cried into her shoulder, holding her tightly, scared to let her go.
“hey,” y/n spoke softly, running her fingers through his hair, “you’re okay. i got you.” once carl calmed down, he pulled away but y/n held onto him, hands on his face.
“i really miss you y/n. and i know i was awful before but all i want to do is be with you. i love you.” he sighed, his hands holding her wrists.
y/n pulled him closer, “i love you, too, idiot.” carl gave her a lopsided smiled before surging forward to connect their lips in a hot kiss. y/n stumbled backwards before backing into the wall behind her. carl bit on her lip softly causing her breath to catch in her throat. she tugged on his hair and he squeezed her hips. she pulled away for breath, pressing her forehead to his, “my room?” breathless carl nodded pressing a quick kiss to her lips before they rushed to her room.
the next morning the front door slammed opened, “y/n! i’m going to kill fiona!” debbie stormed through the house bursting into y/n’s room where she was laying next to a topless carl, wearing only his t-shirt, “oh my god! ew!” debbie shielded her eyes from the sight before her.
“hey, debs.” y/n mumbled, sheepishly.
debbie groaned, “just get dressed, we have school.”

I just read your drunk Liam fic and I just HAD to send you some prompts!!! From the prompt list you hyperlinked 9, 16, and 17 maybe? (Preferably liamxriley) pretty plz?* insert puppy dog eyes🥺*
Well… since you inserted puppy dog eyes…
I wanted to try to incorporate all three of these into one story, which actually worked out really well. Then, the issue came of how to make that apply to Liam and Riley. Luckily, my current binge obsession is the 90′s sitcom Mad About You, and there was an episode the other night that set a lightbulb off in my head, so this fic is loosely based on that episode.
Prompts:
“We should grab coffee together sometime.”
“I’ll walk you home.”
“You need a lift?”
(Prompt pulled from this list. Feel free to send me more!)
Tumblr media
Word Count: 1,431
Warnings: Adult language, mild innuendo
A/N: Thank you @phoenixrising308 for pre-reading. Your kindness and support are unparalleled, and I love you dearly.
Also a thank you to @txemrn for dealing with my unnecessary back and forth about this moodboard. I ended up going with it, even though we were both so wishy washy about it.
A/N 2: This is my third prompt story this week, I’m going to take a break and quietly write by myself for a while. I’ll continue to work on the asks I have received, and please please feel free to send more. I’m having so much fun! I just don’t want to bombard you all, so I’m going to start pacing my posting. When I finish a piece, I just get so excited when I finish something that I want to show you all so badly!
***
Liam and Riley sat across from each other at the table, sharing the piece of cake that sat between them. They were in New York visiting Riley’s family for a few days, and her mother had insisted that Eleanor spend the night, so the royal couple was taking full advantage of their child-free night, wrapping up the evening with dinner at one of Riley’s favorite restaurants.
“Hey, check that out.” Riley tipped her head toward the bar, where a man was approaching a woman who was sitting alone at the bar. “He’s going to shoot his shot and try to pick her up.”
“How do you know?” Liam asked, watching as the woman nodded, the man immediately sitting down beside her.
“I worked in a bar long enough, I can read the body language and tell you exactly what’s going to happen.”
He turned to his wife, a skeptical expression on his face. “Prove it.”
“Wow, you don’t even believe your own wife. I’m wounded.” She placed her hand over her heart in mock devastation. “Fine, I hope you saved room after that cake, because you’re about to eat your words.”
Riley went on to explain what each was saying to the other, and accurately predicted each move that was made. Liam was so impressed that part of him felt like she may have hired these people specifically to act out this scene.
“Now watch, he’s going to pull out his phone and try to get her to put her number in.” She said, as the man reached into his back pocket.
“Is he going to get it?” Liam couldn’t help but be invested in the story that his wife was narrating for him.
“She’s going to give him a number, but see how she’s already almost standing up?” Liam nodded, waiting with baited breath for her to continue, “She’s going to give him a fake number, and then leave immediately. She doesn’t want to reject him to his face.”
“That’s cold.”
“It’s life, we’ve all done it.” Riley replied nonchalantly.
Liam’s gaze snapped to face her. “You’ve given men fake numbers before?”
She nodded and shrugged. “Lucky for you. You never know, I could have ended up suckered into marrying one of those creeps. Or like locked in their basement or something.”
He reached across the table and took her hand in his. “I consider myself very lucky for that.” He brought her hand to his lips and kissed it softly.
“Oh oh, here we go, look!” Riley brought his attention back to the bar where the woman was shaking the man’s hand. “Ooooh, not even a courtesy hug. Game over, dude.” They watched the woman exit the restaurant, as the man started typing on his phone. “He’s sending a text to the number she gave. It either won’t be delivered, or he’ll get a reply from someone who is most definitely not that woman.”
“That poor man. He just wanted to find love.”
Riley sighed, shaking her head. “Ahh my sweet, romantic king, your naiveté is so heartwarming. That man is just looking to get laid.” She laughed, “For all the normal experiences you missed out on, aren’t you glad that you never had to pick up women at bars?” She paused for a second. “Present company excluded, of course.”
Liam laughed, his expression quickly turning serious. “Actually, I kind of wish I could have had the opportunity. I think I would have been good at it.” Riley arched a brow at him. “I mean it, I got you to quit your life and fly all the way to Europe because of one night, didn’t I?”
“Touché.” She drummed her fingers against the table in a brief moment of thought, “But can lightning strike twice?”
“What do you mean?”
“Pick me up. I’ll go sit at the bar, you come over and shoot your shot. No social season, no friends, no boxy work uniform. Just a regular guy picking up a regular girl.”
Liam smirked at the proposition. “You’re on.”
Riley left the table and took a seat at the far end of the bar. Once she was seated he put down some money to cover their dinner, and made his way to the bar. “Excuse me miss, is this seat taken?”
She looked up, smiling politely and shaking her head, motioning with her hand for him to have a seat.
“I’m Liam.” He extended his hand.
“Riley. Nice to meet you Liam.” She placed her hand in his, and he brought it to his lips. “A hand kiss instead of a shake, bold move. You’re not from around here, are you?”
“No, I actually just moved to the states from Europe.”
The bartender approached and took their orders. Liam instructed him to open a tab to cover himself and Riley. He took Liam’s card and stepped away to make their drinks.
“So, why is a beautiful woman like yourself sitting here all alone?” He asked once they were alone again.
Riley tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and looked down at the bar, playing up her role. “You’re sweet. I uh… I was supposed to be meeting someone, but I think they stood me up.”
“Well, their loss is my gain.” As the bartender set down their drinks, Liam lifted his glass in Riley’s direction. “A toast,” He waited for Riley to raise her glass before he continued, “To the missteps of old friends, which allow the opportunity to make new ones.”
“So we’re friends now?” Riley asked as she tapped her glass against Liam’s. “That’s awfully presumptuous.”
“Well, we’ve only just met. I’m hoping that perhaps we could get to know each other and see where the evening takes us.”
Riley agreed, and they began with some small talk. Riley stuck to her pre-Cordonia life, while Liam had done a pretty good job of coming up with a non-Royal backstory. They sat there talking, and drinking and ‘getting to know’ each other. Riley was impressed with Liam’s subtle flirting skills and decided that he was right, he would have been pretty good at this had he been given the chance.
The lights came up, and Liam’s bill was dropped on the bar in front of him. “It looks like they’re closing up.” He said as he reviewed the receipt, signing his name at the bottom. “This was a lot of fun Riley, I would like to see you again. We should grab coffee together sometime.”
“I actually don’t drink coffee, I think it’s gross.”
“Oh.” Riley smiled to herself at the disappointment in his voice.
“I would like to see you again, though.” She reassured him.
He looked up at her and smiled. “Could I take you to dinner, maybe?”
“Dinner would be nice.”
“Great!” He noticed the annoyed expression on the bartender's face, they were officially the last customers in the bar. “We should probably go. I’ll walk you home.”
“I actually have a car waiting for me outside.” He dropped his head, again disappointed by the rejection. “You need a lift?”
He smiled widely, standing from his seat. “I’d like nothing more.”
He offered his arm, she slid off the stool and linked hers through his. They exited the restaurant, and were greeted by Bastien, standing in front of their SUV. Before the guard could reach the door handle, Liam released Riley’s arm and jogged ahead, opening Riley’s door for her.
“Such a gentleman.” She smiled coyly as she slid into the backseat. He smiled and got in after her.
“Back to the hotel, your majesties?” Bastien asked as he entered the driver’s side.
“Yes please.” Riley answered.
Liam looked at her curiously. “Assuming I’m going to come home with you, bold move.”
She laughed. “You don’t have to come, but I promise you’ll have fun if you do.” Riley said in a sultry tone, closing the distance between the two of them.
“Riley…” Liam’s voice was just above a whisper as she leaned in, finally pressing her lips to his. They pulled back breathless from their kiss, their eyes remained closed as they rested their foreheads together. “I guess lighting can strike twice.”
“What do you mean?”
“This is the second time I picked you up in a bar, and the second time you kissed me first.” He grinned triumphantly.
Riley leaned back, laughing as her eyes met Liam’s. “I guess that means you win?”
“Great, let’s go back to the hotel so I can collect my prize.” He brought his hand to her cheek and pulled her in, kissing her again.

hii emina!! #14 for valentine’s day 💌 (for the february ask meme) <33
Tami couldn't help but feel fucking jealous. Offended too, for that matter.
Lip forgot fucking Valentine's Day—Valentine's day—and now Tami was forced to sit in the kitchen with the gathered-around Gallagher & Co, watching how Ian and Mickey annoyingly proved the fact that she could do so much better than fucking Lip.
For fuck's sake, he didn't remember goddamn Valentine's day. It wouldn't have been a big deal had he not almost forgotten their anniversary, too. Tami got that shit was stressful these days—that Lip wasn't all that happy with his delivery-boy job and their 'temporary' stay at the Gallagher house with his abundance of siblings, but seriously. That didn't mean she had to sit around stoically on fucking celebrate-your-love day, knowing she had been forgotten, while simultaneously watching the it couple of their family making kissy faces at each other.
Maybe they weren't making kissy faces, exactly—Tami would pay to see Mickey do anything in that realm, really—but did they have to be so obnoxiously in love? All while Tami was mourning her own loss of a Valentine?
She wasn't a teenager anymore, goddamn it, but she deserved nice things, at least once or twice a year. Some fucking day where she could feel special and completely in love, despite living with ten other people and kind of, sort of being in debt.
Tami was in love with Lip. She was fairly certain he was in love with her too, but did he have to forego this one thing from his memory? Did he have to invite Mickey and Ian over for a family dinner to rub salt into the wound?
Tami was fucking fine with Ian and Mickey on most days—it wasn't even as if she saw them all too often now that they had moved out (she even sort of missed them)—and their displays of affection were more sweet to her than anything.
It was cute seeing Ian pull Mickey into a kiss randomly before he went off to work at the warehouse. Or Mickey wrapping his hands around Ian's waist while they cooked dinner together, prolonging the creation of the simplest of meals, like boxed mac-and-cheese, just so they could hang around each other domestically, a little bit longer.
Nobody minded it all too much when they did those small things, and they were pretty much used to the constant sex-talk, however inappropriate and explicit. Somehow even the never-ending bickering stopped bothering them so much.
But god-fucking-damn-it, why did they have to rub it in her face now?
Ugh, fine, we get it, you're celebrating Valentine's day like a normal couple, being all lovey-dovey and shit. We get it.
They probably spent the entire day being sickly sweet and in love, like fucking teenagers. So gross.
Why the actual fuck did Lip forget?
Tami shot daggers Ian and Mickey's way, watching as they, in the middle of the Gallagher cluster-fuck—they were having dinner like usual, a cacophony of noises filling the slightly-renovated space up, something Tami had already gotten used to—talked lowly amongst each other, slight smiles on their faces.
They were so happy about fucking nothing as they sipped on respective beers, matching rings glinting on their fingers, now blinding to Tami's eyes when they had only been pretty before.
When would Lip propose?
Nope, nope, nope. Back to the current married couple, Tami thought.
They pulled apart, their heads no longer huddled together in some secret, husband talk. Ian placed bread onto Mickey's plate, reaching across for the salt, murmuring something about, Mickey liking everything unbelievably salty like a crazy person.
Fuck off, Gallagher. At least I don't like spicy shit.
Well, I don't think you should be surprised I like spicy things. I married you, didn't I?
A beat as they stared at each other lovingly—yuck, ew, disgusting—and then came Mickey's reply.
Sap.
Her eyes narrowed impossibly as she watched them steal fucking glances when the other one wasn't looking. Fucking glances, like teenagers who just discovered their crush liked them back and were about to have their first fucking kiss.
Ugh, why did they have to be so goddamn in love all the time?
Tami even remembered meeting Mickey for the first time, thinking how there was no way in fucking hell he and Ian were together. No way they were anything more than, what, fuck-buddies?
She also remembered the look Mickey wore once Ian entered the room, in all his beautiful glory, his entire face just lighting up like a fucking street lamp when the sun goes down. Eyes crinkling at the corners, an upturn of his mouth, a goddamn gleam appearing in his features.
Tami couldn't believe that the guy who literally just got out of prison was staring openly at his—boyfriend?—with so much intensity and love. The moment Tami had slipped out of view, she saw them share a kiss, all smiley, and shit.
She couldn't believe it then, but she could believe it now.
Why were they so in love?
How could somebody be so in love?
Tami had fallen in love a couple of times. She'd had unrequited crushes and first boyfriends, and older men who appeased to her daddy issues—still, she'd never quite had what Ian and Mickey had. Not that she thought anybody did.
Pulling herself out of her thoughts, she interrupted whatever conversation the two men in question were landing. They were talking still, bodies practically pressed together as they got unnaturally close at the dining table.
Tami was curious. She wanted to know.
She wanted to know how. How in the holy hell did somebody fall in love so fucking hard that they never let each other go? That they went through every single fucking obstacle they stumbled upon, still walking out alive in the end?
With Lip and their relationship, it was just good until it wasn't and until Tami was a second away from picking up their child and walking away, no matter how good of a father to her child her boyfriend was, and how much she actually loved him.
With Debbie and Sandy, it was being attached by the hip, together in all ways, until all of a fucking sudden, Sandy was gone. Gone from their lives as she had never even been there, replaced by somebody completely insane.
There was Carl, who Tami had never even seen in a committed relationship.
She didn't even want to mention fucking Frank and Monica if the stories Lip had told her were any true.
So, Tami asked.
"Can you guys tell me something," Her tone was only slightly accusing, the bitterness seeping through as she found herself going through a third bottle of Old Style. Even Lip raised his eyes up from the food and over to look at Tami as she addressed everyone's favorite gay couple.
"How in the holy fuck do you manage it?"
Ian and Mickey shared a glance—a fucking glance like they were reading each other's minds—before Ian raised an eyebrow.
"Manage what?"
"Being this seemingly perfect couple."
Lip nudged her foot in question just as Mickey snorted, placing the beer away from his lips so he could properly laugh. Ian rolled his eyes at it.
"We're not fucking perfect," was Mickey's simple answer.
Tami shook her head. "No. No, listen. I get that you're not perfect but I just don't get how. How do you just have this relationship?"
Ian seemed confused. "And what do you think this relationship is?"
"Do you guys even hear yourselves ninety percent of the fucking time?"
Debbie snorted at that. All eyes went to her. "Course they don't. They probably wouldn't be doing them if they did."
"What are we doing?" Mickey asked, and Tami scoffed when she noticed him moving his chair slightly away so he wasn't practically sitting in Ian's lap.
"Why are you asking this shit?" Lip whispered from beside her, apprehension in his gaze. Tami hoped he was slightly offended.
She was really fucking offended.
So, she continued, downing her beer in almost one go.
"I'm talking about how you're joined at the hip."
Ian shook his head. "No, we're not."
Liam made an 'eh' motion with his hands, chiming in, "You live together, you work together. You probably spent the entire day together."
Tami nodded at the boy in agreement. "How do you not get, like, bored of each other?"
They briefly shared another look before Ian shrugged. "I like hanging around him. Mickey's fun company."
Tami groaned, not realizing how they managed to just be so casual about things that didn't make sense to her.
"See?" She said. "I'd probably die if I had to spend more than a couple of hours with the same person, let alone my entire fucking day."
"We get annoyed with each other," Ian defended. "We fight, like, all the time."
Mickey shot him a glare. "Not all the time. Just when you're being an annoying bitch."
"Of when you're being an annoying bitch, Mr. Know-it-all."
"Fuck you, I do know it all."
Ian took a sip of his beer. "Uh-uh. Mr. Milkovich, knows everything about everything."
"Well, I gotta know shit if I wanna put up with your ass the rest of my life."
Ian's face softened suddenly from the playful bickering, sending Mickey a soft smile.
"What are you smiling at, dork?"
Ian's happy expression didn't falter. "You said the rest of your life."
Mickey rolled his eyes. "Duh? Thought we were married?"
"Just," Ian shrugged. "Makes me happy to hear it."
Then they smiled at each other all soft, and Tami just barely suppressed a gag. She felt like she'd just been dumped and was forced to attend some love rally.
How to feel single 101.
"Do you, like, not see my point here?"
Mickey looked towards her, eyes narrowing slightly. "Why do you care so much, right now? It's not that big of a deal that Ian's a complete and utter sap," He shot a playful look in Ian's direction. "We're married and we've been together for a fucking while. We're allowed to act..."
Mickey hesitated.
"We're allowed to be in love without worrying whether or not we'll be judged for it or fucking get told to stop." He cast his eyes downward. "We've had enough of that shit already."
It wasn't silent for long, but Mickey's words rang loud in Tami's ears.
She didn't know a lot about Ian and Mickey during the first years of their relationship—she had only met them after fucking ten years of being together, after all—but she knew enough to be able to say with confidence that it couldn't have been easy. And knowing that, she could easily tell how she was being somewhat of a nagging bitch.
"Don't worry," Tami said softly. "I'm not judging you. Just," She sighed loudly before continuing, "admiring the way you're just completely enamored with each other. It makes you wonder, you know? What you could have."
The two seemed somewhat eased with that, smiles appearing on their faces as they looked at each other, like they knew that what Tami was giving them was a compliment, not judgment. But then, Tami's words set in.
All eyes went to Lip.
Tami's own widened.
"I did not mean it like that!" She defended immediately, shifting so she could look at Lip who was more than hurt by the look in his eye. Tami spoke to him as she said, "It's just that, today's fucking Valentine's day, and—"
"Today's Valentine's day?"
It was Ian who asked out of the blue, and she turned to look at him, wondering what he was talking about. He was looking at Mickey who seemed just as confused.
Of course it was Valentine's day. Tami had been bitter the entire day because it was fucking Valentine's day.
"It is?" Mickey said, eyes going warily towards Ian.
"So, we just, uh, forgot about it?"
Mickey nodded, a weird look on his face like he had forgotten their anniversary or some shit. "I guess so."
Tami was just about to open her mouth. Just about to ask if they really didn't spend the day being lovey-dovey with each other since it was Valentine's day, but rather because every day was obviously Valentine's day for them, when Lip spoke.
"Today's the thirteenth, Tami, for fuck's sake. Valentine's day is tomorrow." He smiled at her, seemingly catching onto why she had been so inquisitive in the first place. "Don't worry, I didn't forget."
Tami's mouth fell open and she only managed a simple 'oh'. Lip seemed content. Not at all caught by surprise at her statement. Maybe he really hadn't forgotten.
"Well, uh," She stammered out, heat crawling up her neck. "Good."
Lip smiled at her.
Ian's voice interrupted their staring contest.
"Wait, so you forgot Valentine's day?" He asked Mickey, an incredulous look on his face.
"Um, excuse me bitch, you forgot it, too!"
Ian scoffed. "So, you're telling me we'd wake up tomorrow and what, just continue on like always?"
"Well, you shoulda had something planned then, Ian!"
"Me? Why me?"
Mickey made a 'duh' face. "You fucking forgot it, too. Why would it be me?"
"Well, I'm sorry for having a million things going on right now."
"What million things, Ian? I'm literally with you every second of the day. What things?"
"Well," He started in a tone that didn't bode anything well. "you see, some of us—"
"Oh no, you fucking won't with that sentence."
Tami watched as the it couple fought over forgetting Valentine's day.
She laughed at the sight of them, bickering and shouting, not really angry but enjoying the fight.
They'd still be sappy as fuck the next day. They'd still be lovey-dovey, making kissy faces at each other.
This was what she meant.
They were best friends. Lovers. Partners. Always by each other's sides.
Tami looked over towards Lip.
Maybe she had one too.

The controller could've been sewn to their hands and it wouldn't make any difference to their lives. That's all they did all day - play games and stay in their own, filthy room, only ever coming out to eat or go to the toilet. Or, on the rare occasions when William forced them to leave the house and get some fresh air, saying the lack of clean air is going to rot their brain, if they had any remaining at all.
Mc never gave their daily life much thought, enjoying the fleeting moments as they passed by.
Though he complained and sent empty threats in his master’s way, William never complained too much. One could say William preferred when they stayed in their room, giving them less opportunities to trash another room or break something.
Mc never gave his job much thought, and the times they did try to help the exhausted butler, he just sent them away. They never complained or urged him to allow them to help, but now they began to regret ever doing so.
Their eyes drooped as they stared at the screen in front of them. The main character of their new game was talking to their mother, telling her how much they loved and appreciated her efforts in their life.
The scene tugged on MC’s heartstrings as they began to bite on the inside of their cheek, suddenly feeling guilt for taking William’s care and hard work for granted.
Pausing the game, they pushed themselves off their chair and stretched their body, letting out a sigh of relief when multiple bones in their body cracked. After placing the headset on the desk, they made their way out of the room and raced to the laundry room, where they knew William was most likely to be at that time.
They knew his schedule like the back of their hand, always staying the same and never changing. And they realised how boring and uneventful his life must be, making the guilt swell even more.
And there he was, in the laundry room folding freshly ironed clothes. As always.
His back was turned to them, and so when their arms securely wrapped around his torso, he flinched, not having expected the sudden visit.
He froze in place for what felt like hours before he finally placed the piece of clothing down, “Master?” He called, his brows knitting.
Mc remained quiet, only tightening their hold on their butler as he stood still.
“Master, do you need something?” He questioned.
Their expression soured; his immediate thought was of them wanting something from him. Without realising, their eyes turned glassy, the guilt of taking him for granted being bigger than they had realised.
“You know I appreciate everything you do, right?” They spoke quietly, feeling the butler’s body stiffen at their words, yet he didn’t dare interrupt them. “The way you look after me, comfort me when I’m sad and deal with my annoying self every day,” they muttered, sniffling as they clutched his shirt in their hands.
Gently, William grabbed hold of their hands and pulled them away from him, leaving him just enough space to turn around and return the embrace. One hand landed on their back and the other at the back of their head, pulling them towards him once again.
“If it weren’t for you,” they whispered, closing their eyes as they rested their head against his shoulder, “I would have been all alone. So thank you for always being here for me. I’ll help you with the chores from now on,” they pulled away from him and wiped the tears, that they didn’t even realise they shed, off their cheeks. “We can split them if you’d like.”
William smiled, a real smile that wasn’t mocking, angry or annoyed. A smile they haven’t seen in what felt like ages and were eager to see more of.
“Thank you, master, but I like to do things a certain way, I -“ he would cut off by his over-enthusiastic master.
“Then teach me!” They exclaimed, their eyes sparkling in excitement despite speaking about chores. “Please! I will do things your way, I promise. So please…”
A sharp exhale left his lips as he stared at them, eventually giving in, “Alright. We’ll share the chores,” he folded his arms over his chest.
“Yay!” Cheered Mc as they threw their arms around him once again, this time wrapping them around his neck with a wide smile on their face.
William of course returned the gesture, more than happy to embrace them, “If I may ask, what brought on this sudden change?” He asked curiously.
“Oh! I was playing this game and the main character-“
“This… happened because of a game?” His eyes turned sharp and words turned sour, which Mc noticed immediately. He wanted to scold them and send them back to their room, yet when they pulled away with a pout, he couldn’t. It’s the thought that counts after all, right… no matter why it came to be.
“Come on,” he ruffled their hair comfortingly, “I’ll teach you how to fold clothes properly, not throw them in the corner of the room like you always do,” he rolled his eyes. Though when he saw the smile pull at their lips once again, he couldn’t help but mirror the look on their face.

thanksgiving | jeff skinner
a/n: it’s here!!! this is like 4k that i threw together in like a week after i took it as a personal challenge from @blueskrugs after i asked why we don’t write more thanksgiving fics. a huge shoutout to her and @danglesnipecelly, for inspiration and cheering me on for this, as well as literally anyone else who’s cheered me on to finish thing, you’re all the real mvps and i love you all 💚
-----
Jeff shrugs, and from across the table filled with pizza, beer, and a bunch of other things that are most definitely not on his approved list of foods, you stare at him.
“I dunno. I don’t really have plans, I guess? Probably just sit at home, relax a little?” He says. Your jaw drops. He has...he has what now? “You're going to your parent’s right?” You nod slowly, still stuck on the fact that he’s going to sit at home and do nothing on Thanksgiving, the best of all holidays. Not spend the day with some teammates, not make a quick trip to his family, nothing. “That’ll be fun!” Jeff grins, dimples popping. “What are you-”
“You’re doing nothing?” You get out finally, the words coming back to you.
Jeff’s smile falters, but only slightly, and he nods. “Yeah? I mean, there’s no practice, no games. I’ll just…” He trails off for a second and then shrugs. “Rest.”
“You’re not going to go, like, visit your parents? They’re right across the border!”
“It’s a Thursday.” Jeff says patiently and you abruptly remember that his Canadian-ness is the whole point of this conversation.
“Thanksgiving is the best holiday! You can’t sit at home alone on it; I forbid it!” Jeff’s smile grows again as he laughs and you try and fight your own grin as you shove at his shoulders, to no avail. “Come home with me!”
“What?” He laughs again, but this time, it’s more like disbelief.
But the idea is already growing in your mind. “Come home with me! You know my parents love you, they won’t mind at all!”
“I can’t just invite myself to your Thanksgiving!” Jeff protests.
You wave him off. “You’re not, I’m inviting you! Come on, we’d love to have you!” He still looks hesitant, so you add, “Our Thanksgiving is huge anyway; one extra mouth to feed isn’t going to put anyone out, Jeff.”
“Alright.” He caves, and you grin, pulling your phone close to you to text your mom and let her know. “But ask your mom, okay? Like, really ask her, don’t just, like, tell her I’m coming.”
“Too late!” You say cheerfully, showing him the text you’d sent in your family group chat, telling them you were bringing Jeff with you next week. Your mom’s already responded with a string of happy face emojis and your younger sister with a How I Met Your Mother gif about Canadian Thanksgiving. “Be prepared for a lot of Canada jokes!”
“Is that supposed to be different than any other time I see your family?’ Jeff deadpans, but you’re pretty sure he looks like, at least 50% more relaxed, so you count this as a win and ignore him completely, already mentally planning for the best holiday of the year.
-----
The drive back home to your parents takes about an hour longer than you’d like, stuck in the same godawful traffic as everyone else trying to leave Buffalo on Wednesday so that they can get back home in time to go out that night.
When Jeff finally pulls his car up in front of your childhood home, you can already see that it’s bustling with activity, getting ready for tomorrow. Most of your siblings have already arrived- only your older brother, with his wife and daughters will come in tomorrow, with the rest of your family- but your younger brother and sister have already come home, a fact that’s even more evident when you and Jeff walk in the front door and immediately trip over three pairs of sneakers.
“Liam!” You cry, grabbing onto Jeff so you don’t fall. “Motherfucker, move your shoes!”
Your brother pops his head out of the living room, AirPods in his ears. “I’m on a call!” And just as you're marveling at the fact that your brother is a real person with a real job taking real work calls, said real person with a real job spots Jeff and lights up. “Jeff! Bro! What’s up, man?”
“I thought you were on a call.” You snap at him.
“I’m on mute.” Liam slaps his palm against Jeff’s pulling him in for a ridiculous handshake-bro hug combo, before he finally comes over and lifts you off the floor. “Yo!”
“Yo!” You repeat, honestly unable to believe you’re related to this kid. If the two of you didn’t look exactly alike, you’d probably think he was adopted. “You still coming out tonight?”
“Hell yeah, this is my last call. I’m ready to go.”
You snicker, looking down at his sweatpants and dress shirt combo- he must have taken a video call at some point today. “Yeah, okay, bud.”
He ruffles your hair, in that annoying way he’s been able to do ever since he grew taller than you. “Don’t you worry, I will be.”
You laugh, ducking under his arm, to let him get back to it. You’ve got no doubts about that. Liam’s always ready to party. “Finish your call so we can start pregaming.”
He grins, like you knew he would. “Now we’re talking.” And then he ducks back into your dad’s office.
Jeff is laughing when you look back at him and you give him a look. “What?”
“Nothing, just forgot how the two of you were when you got going.”
“Yup, and you’re stuck with us for next two days!” You grin.
Jeff rolls his eyes at you, but he’s still smiling when he follows you to the kitchen, in search of your mom. She’s at the counter, rolling dough for biscuits, her only other contribution to the annual Thanksgiving dinner that she hosts, besides the turkey; a holiday that she’d taken over hosting once it had become too much for your grandmother to handle, but only on the caveat that everyone began contributing food toward the meal. It’s been a potluck style holiday ever since.
She’s ultra-focused, the volume on her favorite playlist high (this wild mix of 80’s pop and today’s hits that’s actually kind of a banger), so you sneak up behind her and wrap your arms around her. “Hi!”
“Jesus!” Your mom jumps, elbowing you in the process, but you’re laughing too hard to care. “Don’t do that!”
“Just excited to see you!” You beam at her, squeezing her once more, before pulling away. “Where do you want the pie?” Jeff lifts the pie you’d made yesterday, showing your mom.
Your mom purses her lips, studying the kitchen around her. “Leave it on the counter for now; I’ll have your dad clear some space in the garage.” She gestures with her elbow. “Hi Jeff!”
“Hi!” Jeff pulls out his best smile, a real one, dimples super popped. “Thank you for having me-”
Your mom cuts him off before he can finish, like you knew she would. “Oh, we’re so happy you could make it! You’re welcome anytime, Jeff!” She assures him.
“Is the guest room ready?” You ask. “We’ll throw our stuff upstairs before Dad sees it at the bottom of the steps and has a fit.”
Your mom fights back a laugh at that- a statement that everyone in your family knows all too well-but then looks almost apologetic as she finishes, “It is, but we gave it to Katie.”
“Oh, Katie’s here too?” Your sister’s roommate at college was, at this point, basically another sister to you. She hardly went home for breaks within the semesters, usually came up for at least a month during the summer, and more often than not came home with Abby when she was back for anything. The “guest room” really was more like Katie’s room at this point.
“Where else would she be?” Abby appears, right on cue, with Katie right behind her, practically matching in leggings and oversized sorority shirts. “It’s Thanksgiving; she’s ready to rage tonight.”
You actually can’t wait for the babies to be hungover tomorrow-both were 21 for their first Thanksgiving Eve and you know they’re going to be in a super rough spot tomorrow-but you keep that thought to yourself.
“It didn’t even occur to me!” Your mom says apologetically. “I just gave Katie her usual room.”
“No, it’s cool. Jeff and I can share. He doesn’t mind, right?” But you barely even wait for his shrug and nod in agreement. It’s not like you haven’t before, when you’re either too lazy or too drunk to go home. You’re both adults, it’s no big. “I’ve shared a bed with you before; I’ll spare Katie the bruised shins.” You tease your sister.
Katie cracks up as Abby sputters out how rude you are. “It’s a hazard!” Katie agrees, dodging the swat your sister sends towards her. It sets the two of them off, which you take as your cue to grab Jeff’s hand and drag him (and your stuff) up to your room.
Of course, usually when you’re sharing a bed with Jeff, it’s a king sized bed, or at least a queen- definitely not the double that your parents just shoved in your old room to replace the queen bed that had been in there until you moved out and took your furniture with you. You hadn’t realized how small it was though, not until today, until the idea of actually having to share it with someone, with Jeff, who might not be a giant, but isn’t tiny.  “Sorry.” You apologize, almost unsure of what you’re saying.
Jeff shrugs. “Well, at least you don’t kick.” He smiles, as then it’s like everything’s back to normal, that awkward feeling that was growing over you gone as quickly as it came.
“She’s a bruiser, don’t let her tell you otherwise.” You throw your bag down, rifling through it for the sweater you were planning to wear tomorrow, to hang it up so it isn’t too wrinkled.
Jeff laughs. “I’ll take your word for it.” He’s holding up his shirt, a button down and a tie. “Where can I hang this?”
“You can’t wear that!”
He frowns, likely at the vehemence you’d just spoken that with. “Uhh, why not?”
“You’ll get roasted.” Seriously, you’d told him it wasn’t a dressy affair. God, what part of not dressy does he think requires a tie? “Don’t you have, like, a sweater?”
“I mean, yeah, but-”
“Sweater and jeans, that’s fine.”
Jeff gives you a look. “That doesn’t seem-”
“Sweater. And jeans.” You repeat. He’ll thank you tomorrow, when your uncle doesn’t ask him when tea is. When your cousin doesn’t talk to him only in a fake British accent for the entire night.
Jeff hands over a sweater, a soft thing you’ve seen him wear on many occasions, and you smile your thanks at him, hanging it up next to yours. “Meet your standards?” He asks; you think he’s aiming for teasing but he kind of misses the mark, sounding a little more nervous than joking.
“Perfect.” He smiles back at you and you laugh. “Come on, you dork. Let’s go see what’s for dinner tonight.”
-----
“Don’t wake me up when you come in tonight!” Your dad calls, as he drops the five of you off at Mel’s, the bar for Thanksgiving Eve. Your friends are already at the bar, you’re anticipating a high school reunion for sure, and you’ve warned Jeff of this, even though he assured you that he could handle it, and he was just excited for a nice, chill night.
You’d actually laughed out loud at that. Oh Jeffrey.
“Pshh.” Liam waves your dad off. “I haven’t done that since I was like 16 and still having to sneak out.”
Your dad gives him a look. “I was talking to your sister.” He looks over at Abby, who ignores him completely, in favor of taking a SnapChat with Katie, and he sighs resolutely. You all absolutely know she isn’t listening to a word he says. “Have fun, be safe. Uber home.”
Liam salutes him. “Will do.”
Inside the bar, the night starts exactly as you and Liam have started your last few Thanksgiving Eve’s-with a round of shots at the bar as you’re ordering drinks, before splitting off to find your respective friends to start the evening.
Jeff fits in with your friends fantastically, laughing and joking around with them like he’s known them forever, even though you’re sure the only one he’s met is your oldest friend, Ashley. But he greets Ashley and her husband, Brian, like old friends, and quickly joins conversations with all your other friends, and soon hours have passed before your brother is sliding up behind you. “Heads up.” Liam mutters as he passes. “Douche at 3 o’clock.”
You tense as it takes everything in you not to turn and look over. “Hey.” Jeff nudges you, concern clear in his eyes as he looks at you, and you’re not sure what he pulled himself away from, but you must look pretty bad. “You okay?”
You nod, kinda spacily, but leaning in closer to him, and he takes the cue to curl in toward you- you’re not really interested in shouting to the entire bar and you’re really not interested in drawing attention to yourself. “Yeah, just- my ex is over there.”
Jeff purses his lips for a minute and then schools his face back to neutral. “I take it things didn’t end well.”
“No.” You say, thinking of the demise of your relationship with Dylan. “It did not.”
You hadn’t even realized that Jeff grabbed your hand until he’s squeezing it gently. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be.” You shake your head. “It was...definitely for the best.” It might have taken you a while to see that, but you can now, even if the rare instances you still see Dylan sometimes rattles you. “I thought I was going to marry him, at one point, but I’m so much happier here now.”
Jeff smiles. “Good.”
You squeeze his hand once more, a thanks for his comfort and care, before both of you rejoin the conversation, and you forget about Dylan entirely for the next hour, until you physically run into him coming back from the bar with another round of drinks for you and Jeff.
“Hey!” Dylan beams at you, goes right in for a cheek kiss, like you’re still that familiar, and once again you stiffen up.
“Hi.” You return politely, ready to sidestep around him and return to Jeff and your friends.
“No, wait.” Dylan steps with you, blocking your path. “I haven’t seen you in forever. Let’s catch up a minute, what’s new?”
“No offense, Dylan, but I’m not really looking to catch up with you.” You say flatly.
He opens his mouth to respond, but before he can another voice cuts in. “Everything okay here?” Jeff asks politely, stepping very purposefully next to you, and Dylan’s eyes immediately fly over to him.
“Mhmm,” You nod. “Was just on my way back to you.”
“Good.” Jeff says, in a tone far more harsh than you usually hear him take. “Let’s get back.” He positions himself again, clearing a space for you to easily slip past Dylan, and then steps closely behind you, catching up quickly.
“Thanks.” You lean against him, gently, not looking to spill either of your drinks, but Jeff solves that problem by taking his.
“Any time.” Jeff says softly and you don’t have much else to say on the matter so you just nudge him once more in thanks and walk back toward your friends with him at your side.
-----
When you wake up the next morning, you’re warm and comfortable and only a little hungover, which you count as a huge success. There’s not too much noise going on downstairs yet, which means you definitely have some more time to sleep, so you curl back into your pillow, humming contently when it pulls you in closer.
And then your eyes pop open abruptly, because pillows don’t do that.
Except they do when they look like Jeff Skinner, who looks just as soft and warm and comfortable as you feel right now, still sleeping judging by the evenness of his breath.
It’s just...it’s a really nice way to wake up, with Jeff’s kind-of smiling face, looking super soft and cozy as he breathes just on the wrong side of too loud, but not so loudly that it drives you nuts.
It’s a little too early to unpack that, and your hangover might not be that bad but it’s definitely bad enough that you’re not ready to think on that, so you close your eyes and let yourself curl into Jeff and fall back asleep.
-----
When you do finally get out of bed, Thanksgiving morning is its usual chaos, running around with last minute errands, cleaning, and helping your mom in the kitchen. The last to shower for the day, by the time you arrive downstairs, the Lions vs. Bears game is well underway, your notoriously early grandparents have already arrived, and your grandmother is already asking your mom where that one turkey decoration she bought her one year is.
You bypass the kitchen entirely and move toward the living room, where you find your dad, grandfather, Jeff, and siblings all gathered, just as you’d expected. You slide down on the floor next to Jeff, knowing that it’s only a matter of time before more of your family arrives and you’re offering your set up anyway, and wait for the next round of chaos to begin.
It doesn’t take long. Your aunts, uncles, and cousins start pouring in and then it’s just introduction after introduction, as you wrap up showing off Jeff to one group just as the next arrives. You are absolutely confident he has no idea who anyone is, but it’s fine, because he’s still laughing and joking around with all your uncles and cousins that have joined you in watching football.
The kitchen is its own brand of chaos, when you make a quick stop in on your back from a beer run, but chaos has never stopped your aunt before and it certainly isn’t today. “Oh my god!” She exclaims, after you’ve pressed a smacking kiss to the top of your grandmom’s head. “That boy!”
“What boy?” You ask, like an idiot, which is immediately clear from the looks you get from everyone in the kitchen, even your usually oblivious uncle, who’s doing...something...with the ham they’d brought. “Who, Jeff?”
“Yes.” Another aunt stresses. “He’s cute!”
You shrug. “Yeah, I mean-”
But your grandmom cuts you off this time. “And so friendly! Just the nicest boy! Oh, you couldn’t have found anyone better!” She exclaims.
“Well, I haven’t.” You announce, watching all of their faces fall. “So sorry to burst that bubble.”
“Why?” One of your older cousins frowns. “Girl. Get on that. You are not going to do better than that boy in there.”
“I truly don’t know if that was meant to be a dig at me or you all think that highly of Jeff already, but regardless. We are just friends.” Now everyone in the kitchen is giving you a look. You gather the beers and retreat, distributing them as you return to your spot on the floor near Jeff.
He’s giving you a look as you pass him his, but whatever’s on your face must not be too bad, because he just thanks you as you pass him the bottle, and you nod in return as you try to find the same comfortable spot as before, leaning against his thigh.
-----
Your dad catches you a bit later, as he’s coming back with beers this time and you’re coming out of the bathroom, and he nudges you carefully as you take a few bottles from his hand. “So Jeff?”
You groan. The tone of that statement was far too loaded. “Jesus, you too?”
Your dad laughs. “Who else?”
“Everyone.”
“Well maybe that should be your hint.” Your dad says teasingly, but also not? There’s definitely some seriousness to this. “That Jeff’s pretty perfect for you.”
You stare at him. “You’ve met Jeff, like, a hundred times. Why’s this coming out now?”
“I always thought you were my smart kid and that you’d figure it out yourself.” He muses. “Now I realize you’re only book-smart and you’d never figure this out on your own.” And then he leaves you there in the hallway, with your jaw dropped and too many thoughts, as he continues on, laughing at you.
-----
When the call to come serve yourselves echoes into the room, the usual mad scramble follows immediately. It’s only as you’re getting into line behind your brother that you realize that Jeff’s not with you anymore, and you abandon the long line waiting for food, in favor of seeking out Jeff.
You find Jeff upstairs, in your room, just kind of lounging on your bed, and you lean against the doorway. “Hey! Food’s ready.”
“Yeah.” Jeff nods, the smile he sends you back in return far too tight and forced to be genuine. “Be right down.”
But he doesn’t move, so you step in and climb into your bed next to him. “What’s wrong?”
Jeff laughs; it’s kind of hollow and doesn’t sound anything like his usual loud laugh or his giggles that you love. “What- nothing. Nothing’s wrong.”
“Jeff.” You say softly. “Come on.”
He sighs. “Why did you bring me here?”
That...was not at all what you expected. “What?”
“Why did you bring me here?” He repeats. “Why did you bring me home, to your family? I thought, maybe, finally…” He trails off for a minute. “Except, there’s like ten other randos here too!” He laughs again, that hollow thing that you’re already hating. “Everybody in this family just brings people home, and that’s awesome, okay? Please don’t ever change that about yourself. I just-I thought we had something special, is all.” He says, sounding almost sad? Melancholy?
“You are special.” You hate this. Jeff should never be sad; he should always be happy and smiling and joking. This is worse than seeing him after losses, worse than seeing him at low points in the season, that one game when he realizes that shit’s done and they’re just playing to keep playing now, that playoffs won’t be coming this year, again. “Jeff, you’re-”
“I’m in love with you.” Jeff says and it’s so straight-up, matter-of-fact, like it’s never not been a fact for him. “And I’m sorry I’ve fucked things up here for tonight and made this so awkward. I just- being here with you and your family just made me want you that much more.”
There’s so so so much you want to say to Jeff, but it’s like time is frozen. You can’t speak, can’t move, can’t do anything except look at him in awe, until he starts to move off your bed, when you reach for him, finally, resting your hand on his thigh, relieved when he looks back at you. “My dad thinks I’m an idiot.” You blurt out and Jeff just gives you a look. “I’m sorry; that wasn’t what I wanted to say.” You take a deep breath, trying to gather the jumble of thoughts in your head. “Or at least, not the only thing. He thinks I’m an idiot because he thinks you’re perfect for me and I didn’t see it. My whole family thinks you’re perfect- cute and friendly and nice- and god, Jeff, you are! You’re all those things!” He’s still watching you, with like, barely the smallest hint of a smile on his face. “I just-didn’t realize you were perfect for me until we came here.”
Now he’s full on beaming, dimples showing, and you don’t even realize that you’re returning the grin until his hand comes up to your face, thumbing at the corner of your lip. “I’m sorry I’m a dumbass.” You finish lamely, too busy smiling at Jeff. “Please kiss me so we can make sure we get biscuits.”
Jeff hums. “I don’t know if I can kiss you now and just...stop.”
“Well I’m not going down to eat until you do.” You say stubbornly. “And you’ve been hyping up those biscuits since breakfast.”
“Fair enough.” Jeff laughs and then you’re smiling into the best first kiss you’ve ever had, tangling your hands into his hair and wondering if you may actually end up missing the meal this year.

here’s some vampire harry!!!!! pls treat him with the love and respect he deserves <3
“Honey, this is just water under the bridge” Your mother, Joanne, reassured you. She placed a rogue piece of hair behind your ear. You were both sitting on your bed, cuddling like you were 10 years old again. Getting fired, from your dream job for no apparent reason at all has basically broken you. Your mother is trying to reassure you, that it was meant to happen - that everything happens for a reason. You just want your job back.
“We’ll start job hunting again, next week. Ok?” Joanne said, you sighed and rolled over on your sighed. Your mum rubbed your back and took all the dirty cups from your room with her as she left your room.
You tried to sleep, to try and forget everything that had just happened that afternoon. But, your mind was occupied and too busy. So you decided you better start looking for some jobs, even interviews. Even though you still live with your mum, you still need money. Not just for yourself, but your mum too. All the money that comes into the house is coming from you and the jobs you have. You were finally comfortable with money, for the first in your life. But the world just really hated you at the moment.
You walk over your desk and sit down, opening up the second hand laptop you bought yourself for christmas. It’s nothing special like a mac, but it does the job. Once you’re logged in, you open google and type in ‘JOBS IN MY AREA’. You didn’t go to college and you barley passed high school, you’ll be lucky if you even get a job at the local book store.
You needed to stop this, punishing yourself. It’s not your fault, you remind yourself.
Nearly falling asleep at your desk, you decided to head to bed. Tomorrow will be better.
**
Tomorrow is not better. It’s worse than yesterday. You couldn’t even bare to open your laptop after being so disappointed last night. And you’re mum kept trying to reassure you, but you felt responsible for this.
Your mum couldn’t work, she’s not well and she’s in denial about it. She goes to AA meetings and talks with therapists, but she just can’t stay sober. You’ve tried to get her into working, but she manages to fuck it up everytime. Your mum is good mother, she took care of you and did the best she could. But sometimes you just wished she’d just stay sober, for even a week. So you could be a normal 19 year old, go out for drinks and hang out with friends. But you know she’s not a normal mum. And that’s something you just have to live with.
“Morning, love” Joanne said sipping on her ‘tea’. You knew it was alcohol so you gave her a pointed look.
She sighed and poured the drink down the sink. “Good, now go brush your teeth and we can talk” you say pulling your hair up. You mother shook her head and sighed. “I’m the mum here, Y/N. Don’t treat me like i’m the teenager” she said and you laughed. Really? This is how today’s going to go? the universe really hates me, you thought.
“You just hid vodka from me mum” you say and she sighed walking over and kissing your temple. “I’m sorry, ok? I’m trying, lovey” she said and you could tell how hard she was trying to keep together. you nodded and smiled, this was going to be a good day. Bite your tongue, Y/N.
“Yeah, i know. Now go get ready, i need help job hunting” you say and she nodded making her way out of the kitchen and up to her room. You sighed and put the kettle on. You walked into the pantry and took the vodka she had opened and poured it down the sink. Let’s see how long it takes her to notice.
You sat down with your cup of tea and one for your mum, opening up the paper and your laptop.
When your mum came back in, she looked a lot nicer and healthier. The shower did her good.
“So i saw someone looking for an assistant on facebook” Your mum said logging into her facebook on your laptop. You smiled to yourself, she really cared about you. “His name is harry i think, something along the lines of needing someone to sort out his schedule which you’re pretty good at” she said showing you the post. A few, actually a lot, of people had already liked the post and there was people sharing their CVs in the comments begging for a chance. You didn’t have the heart to tell your mum that this person wasn’t going to accept you.
“I mean, you can apply for other jobs but i think it’s perfect for you” She said biting her nip nervously. You nodded smiling in reassurance. “Yeah, it’s perfect mum. Thank you, i’ll try and get an interview. I also found a cleaning job too, so that’s good. Both jobs look like they pay well” you say with a shrug.
Joanne nodded and kissed your temple. “You’ll get a job. Don’t worry about it.”
After sending your CV to multiple possible bosses, you shut your laptop and turn your phone off of silent. Job hunting is a pain in the ass and exhausting, all you can do now is make lunch and hope for the best.
**
You were braiding your mothers hair when you got the call. You were both having a girly night as your mum hadn’t drank a sip of alcohol all day, it was definitely something to celebrate.
“Is this Y/N L/N i’m speaking with?” the voice asked, he sounded so bright and chipper. And he was irish too.
“This is her! how can i help you?” you asked and the man cleared his throat and paused for a second. “I’m offering you a job. the job” he said and you almost dropped your phone. You put it on your leg, on speaker so your mum could hear and you could multitask. You brushed the ends of your mum hair and let out a shaky breath.
“Do i need to come in for an interview?”
“Well, me and the boss would like to get to know you, get a feel of how you work on your own and with help. just like a test run, but if i’m being honest the is yours” he said and you could almost cry. “You’re exactly the kind of person Harry, my boss is looking for Y/N” he said.
“I’m niall by the way, i’m harry’s personal assistant” Niall said and you smiled.
“Well, when can i come in?”
After settling some stuff with Niall, who is kind of your boss too you were free to hang up. your mum squealed and pulled you into the tightest hug ever. “I told you, everything happens for a reason! you were exactly who they were looking for, babe” your mother said caressing your cheeks. You kissed her temple and nodded.
“You’re the best, you know that?” You said and your mum shrugged. “Eh, i’m okay” she giggled, you sat back down on the couch.
“Lay down, mum. We’ve got it sorted now”
You were going in to the offices, or as what niall called STYLES x MALIK, harry styles and zayn malik are both the bosses of the fashion company they both created. They have a headquarters in the states, but they’re just starting up a new headquarters in england, as harry and zayn grew up here and would like to see their families a lot more. Niall basically told you their whole life story over the phone, which you were very thankful for. Saves you the googling.
It was a tuesday morning, when you got the go ahead to pop in. Niall said to look nice, but casual. Like you’re going out for a dinner with your partners family. So you pull out your best high waisted flare jeans, an orange stripped shirt and tucked into your jeans. You topped it off with your lucky platforms and some jewellery. You left your hair natural, and the same with your makeup only some lip gloss and mascara.
“You look beautiful, honey”
“Thanks mum” You grinned pulling her into a hug. You placed your bag over your shoulder and took the car keys from the bowl at the front door. “I’ll be back soon, ok? Go for a walk or something” you say squeezing her hand, before leaving.
20 minutes away from you, is a angry, grumpy vampire. Niall was sat in front of harry, with a grin on his face.
“She’s literally perfect harry” Niall try to reason, but harry was having absolutely none of it. He wanted to rip that blonde son of bitch heart out.
“Niall, i didn’t want her though.” Harry said standing up from his desk, opening up a file and pointing at a picture.
“i wanted her”
Harry was pointing at a girl, blonde hair, blue eyes and great blood. He had tasted her before and worked his magic into getting her an interview - of course, she doesn’t remember him though. But this Y/N girl, he didn’t want her and he never agreed to having her come here today.
“You’ll have to fire her or make up some excuse, fuck i need something” Harry mumbled placing a hand over his eyes, Niall walked over to the fridge in the corner of harrys office he opened it up and took out a bag of blood pouring it in to a small glass. He placed it on the table standing in front of a frustrated vampire.
“She’s really good, Harry. You’ll regret it if you don’t let her do the test run” Niall said before walking to the door. “And she’s hot as fuck” he added leaving the room.
Harry hated being the bad guy, usually he’s a nice person. More lively, a bit like niall. A lot more quiet though, he’s pensive and reads people really well, one of his many talents as a vampire.
Harry was born in 1908, to a wealthy family. He had caring parents, a loving sister and good future a head of him. Until he met liam payne, they met in university decided to work together. The next thing you know, liam had his fangs in harrys neck and he was immortal. The first few years were hard, he was wreck less and did everything possible to get even a drop of blood. He met zayn five years after being turned, and he was sort of like the alpha of their ‘pack’ so to speak. He taught harry all he knew about control and using powers to get what you want, but only when you so desperately need it. They met niall in the 70s, he was freshly turned and needed help. They took him under their wings, and here they are today with a fashion company and a load of money in their pockets.
“What’s all the fuss about?” Zayn asked walking into harrys office with a few files in his hands. Harry huffed and sipped on the blood niall had poured for him. “I’m closed” harry said sitting down on his chair, zayn laughed and shook his head. “You have an interview in 5 minutes, get it together styles” Zayn said and dropped the files on his desk.
“Whether we hire or not, be nice. Her file is there, read it, study it. And keep those fangs to yourself” Zayn warned pointing at harry, then walked out of his office. Harry sighed and opened the file, stopping in his tracks when he saw your face.
You’re beautiful, so fucking beautiful.
He could tell the photo was professionally done, and you definitely had gotten someone to take it in a rush. Your CV is also a mess, but harry thinks it’s endearing. God, you’ve hypnotised him already. Harry could feel your aura through a picture, how the fuck was that even possible?
“She’s here” Niall said through the glass door. Harry nodded and cracked his neck, let’s get this over with then.
He could see niall biting his lip as she walked up, he couldn’t keep it in his pants for 2 seconds.
Niall opened the door and harry watched the girl walk in, her flares and platforms got his attention. She’s perfect. For him. Niall was still checking her out, so harry cleared his throat. Niall smirked and shook his head walking out of the office.
“Take a seat” Harry said and you smiled, sitting down. “I just want to say, i’m really grateful for this opportunity” you say, and harry nearly rolled his eyes. She’s too beautiful for a sob story. “I appreciate it” you say, and harry nodded quickly wanting to move away from anything emotional.
“um, so we don’t need you” He lied and you nearly choked on you own spit. Your eyebrows furrowed and you flushed a bit. Harry could see niall shaking his head. Damn you, super human hearing.
“Don’t need me? Niall said that i was just what you were looking for” you say, not angry just confused. Harry was impressed at how well you could keep your feelings in check, but he could feel how agitated you were becoming.
“Well, he’s wrong” Harry said and closed the file. “Have a nice day” He said with a fake smile. You couldn’t believe this. Fuck this.
“Fuck you” You said grabbing your bag and hoisting it up onto your shoulder. “Woah, Woah, what’s going on in here?” Zayn asked his hands in the air.
“Ask him, thanks for nothing” You say moving to walk out of the office. You needed to get out of here. “Just wait” Zayn called out, you stopped and sighed turning around.
“You’ve got the job” zayn said and your eyes widened in shock. “You start this friday, niall will email you detail. Use this week to treat yourself, on me ok?” Zayn said handing you a 50 dollar note. Who are you to deny money? You nodded and smiled at him. “Thank you” you say and he nodded.
“Don’t disappoint me”
**
You got yourself a coffee on the way home, you were a little overwhelmed and you needed to calm down before you went home to your mum. You just hope she didn’t do anything stupid while you were out.
“Mum, i’m home” you called out handing your bag up on the hanger. You got no response, so you looked around the house. Nothing in the kitchen or bathroom. The only places left are her room and living room.
You walked into the living room, to see your mum passed out on the couch a bottle of wine and an empty bottle of vodka on the coffee table. you sighed “Oh, mum” you said tears welling up in your eyes. “Why do you keep doing this” you mumbled picking up the wine and empty bottle, you put them away and cleaned up the cup. After that, you placed a blanket over her.
“You’ll get better soon, mum. I’ll be able to pay for it. We’ll have everything we’ve ever dreamt of and more” You say, kissing her forehead.
The next couple of days, you were nursing your mother back to health and used the 50 dollars your new boss gave you to by some groceries. Your mother really needed some hangover snacks, and she needed a lot of them. Luckily, you’ve been doing this a lot longer than you should’ve.
“Mum, i’m off to work” You said peaking through her door. She wasn’t talking to you at the moment.
“Alright, there’s medicine on the counter downstairs, snacks and stuff too. There’s no alcohol and no money, so don’t even try” You warned closing her door. God, this was so hard. You wondered how long it would take to be fired from this job.
You arrived early at the office, niall greeted you and took you to your own little office. It was nothing huge, but you absolutely adored it.
“Hey, don’t worry about harry” Niall said and you nodded. “I’m not, don’t worry” you reassured him smiling as you put down your diary.
“Good, well i’ll leave you to it” Niall said and you grinned at him.
“Good luck”
“Why?”
“You’ll need it”

Can you recomend any kidfic’s? Particularly where one of them already has a child! Thank you!
hello my dear nonnie! you know what’s funny about kid fic like this? i don’t usually seek them out, but i’m not against them either, and i’m so glad because i’ve read some really amazing ones. since you didn’t specify pairing, i hope you don’t mind but i’m including other pairings here too (mostly because some of my very favorite kid fics ever were actually tomlinshaw hehe).
so here we go! these are some fics i’ve loved where one of the protagonists has a kid :D hopefully there’s some on here you’ve not read before and you find some new fics to love!
as always, please show your thanks to the authors with kudos and nice comments!
come on over, we've got something to share by @jaerie - A/B/O fic featuring omega harry and alpha louis. they’re neighbors and both have kids, and it’s so hot but it’s also got such a lovely deeper layer to it as well. i love this fic very much a lot!
Down From the North by @chelsea-frew - this is SUCH a lovely christmas fic! harry and louis have been dating for long enough that louis is ready to introduce harry to his daughter, but when they’re introduced it turns out his daughter has already met harry. it’s just SOOOO cute the way it all unrolls. hehe
try to not remember (rather than forget) by @hereforlou - ANGST TRAIN! established relationship fic where harry has been in a coma for YEARS. ACTUAL. YEARS. so when he wakes up there’s a lot of catching up to do.............. including meeting their child. TEARS MY FRIENDS. this fic was incredible. so anyway. get ready for pain, but you’ll like it ;)
He Was a Different League (When I Was Nothing Much) by @afangirlfantasy - i just really love crying over kid fics, okay? lollllll this one is one of those where they knew each other when they were younger, lost touch, and then reconnect when they’re older, right? but add in marcel and single father louis and oh gosh. so many tears. like when i reread my comment i kinda laughed, because apparently i ran out of tissues and made my poor husband get me a new box so i could keep reading and crying lollllll so anyway. a great fic, highly recommend, once again get ready for pain. lol
Eye of the Zebra by @sadaveniren - lmaoooo listen, this fic was written for @wordplayfics and the prompt was zebra, and then sada went and found a hilarious tumblr post to base the fic off of and i about died. this fic is actually from the pov of the child, and it’s GREAT. 100% recommend. lol
Liminal by @thousandbelow - okay listen. if you have never read anything by kodi, you’re missing out. she has such a way of creating a very specific feel and atmosphere to her fics. truly, it’s a gift, and this fic throws you entirely into louis’ world. it’s incredible and the story is amazing and hard to read in some ways and it’s just. wonderful.
Face Your Fears by @sadaveniren - SINGLE FATHER AND SECRET OMEGA HARRY!!! during his very first heat he was mated by an alpha who wasn’t there when he came to and he had twins. THE WORLD BUILDING! THE LIFE HE BUILT FOR HIMSELF! THE WAY HE MEETS LOUIS AND THINGS COME TOGETHER!!!!!! gahhhhhhhh and listen, these kids are SO REAL. i love it.
happiness hits like a train on a track by leighbot - tomlinshaw fic! tbh i went to scan the fic to be sure i was thinking of the right fic and then accidentally spent 20 minutes reading and had to cut myself off so i could finish this lmaooooo SO ANYWAY single father louis moves in next door to liam and harry, who do as many happy couples do and try setting louis up on dates so he can find his happily ever after like they have lmaooooo it clearyl doesn’t work, but then one night his daughter gets sick and duh duh duhhh! doctor nick to the rescue! the humor, the banter, the rhythm of this fic is all incredible and obvs sucks you in lol i love it
Come and Get Your Love by @rsadelle - another tomlinshaw! this is a five times fic and both nick and louis are fathers and it’s so wonderful. the fic revolves around them taking their kids to each other’s houses for play dates and such, but there’s also little interludes and there’s history you want to learn and you slowly put things together and i just... oh gosh i loved the feel of this fic so much. every single character in this made me wanna be part of their friend group lol
i've a feeling it's time to try (love it if we made it) by serenityandtea - I LOOOOOVE THIS FIC SO VERY MUCH SO SO SO MUCH SO VERY INCREDIBLY MUUUUUCH. i just... deep breaths. yeah. okay. tomlinshaw! yoga instructor and single parent louis! nick basically stumbles into a class of louis’ and of course has to go back. lol it’s famous/non-famous, there’s so much DEPTH to SO MANY PEOPLE IN THIS. i just. fuck. i love it in a lot of different ways and it is truly one of my very favorite kid fics EVER.
Things There Might Be Pictures Of series by @andyouknowitis - established relationship, featuring george shelley as harry and louis’ kid! listen, lj has the most amazing writing, they build these incredible worlds for us and the detail, the intricacies involved in this series! it’s just mindblowing. gorgeous. wonderful. there’s such truth in the snippets we are able to have here, and i love them.
This is Halloween, everybody make a scene by @allwaswell16 - i STILL giggle when i think of this fic and i read it almost three years ago now, okay? this one sticks with you. it is short and sweet and just a total nightmare for a parent, but also such fun lololol you just really have to read it if you haven’t cause it’s a gem
Home for Christmas by @haloeverlasting - HALLMARK CHRISTMAS AU KID FIC! truly it’s amazing. harry didn’t think he wanted kids but then he wakes up! and he’s got a husband and kids! hahaha oh gosh this fic has such feeling and i legit have built it up so much in my mind that i truly thought it had so many more hits than it does?? how?? does it not have more love? anyway. i love this fic very much, it is so soft and lovely and i adore.
Packed Lunches, Sticky Fingers and Accidental Levitation by @londonfoginacup - this fic made me cry... but not because it’s sad? lollll okay so it’s witch harry who has an entire house full of kids and all the chaos that brings. he does it all himself and is not doing a great job at staying on top of everything. he really needs help, and fae zayn finally makes a decision for him and sends louis. and listen. louis does so much for harry that i as a parent who have felt very much the same way that harry did, i cried. lollll but anyway, it is such a lovely and soft and beautiful fic AND THE SEQUEL!!!! IS SO GOOD!!!! so anyway. an absolute fav of mine, right here, and that’s saying something cause emmu is one of my fav writers.
Took Me by Surprise by @becomeawendybird - listen. famous/famous, secret relationship kid fic? you hear what i’m saying?? louis was making a name for himself in the world of MLS when he got injured so he’s now a big name commentator and he has this sassy daughter who is in love with singer harry styles, so naturally things happen, right? gosh I LOVE THIS FIC SO MUCH. i’m just sitting here remembering everything i love about it, and i can’t name it all, so please read it.

Monthly Reads | October 2020

Happy 28th! I probably sound like a broken record already but I have to say it again: this fandom has an insane amount of talented writers! I am in awe! Every single one of you is my hero! ♥♥♥ Here are all the 23 fics I read and loved this month:
✧ Welcome to The Rivalry | 2tiedships2 | a/b/o - strangers to lovers - enemies to lovers - rivalry - college - 19k “Welcome home!” Niall yelled, clapping his hands in excitement. “Isn’t it great?” Louis looked between Niall and the house, unsure how to respond. “I don’t understand,” Louis finally managed to say. “Aren’t we a little old to be living so close to campus?” Niall scoffed. “You’re only twenty-four for fuck’s sake. There is still plenty of partying left for us to do. What better place than one street over from where a car was set on fire after the Michigan game last year?” “Is there proof of that? Did the car have Michigan plates or something? Is there a photo I can send in a DM to Wolfie?” As if on cue, a Twitter notification popped up on Louis’ Apple watch. He had tweeted again. Or a reverse You’ve Got Mail au inspired by the Ohio State/Michigan rivalry. Featuring duplex neighbors, (kind of) enemies to lovers, and an anonymous Twitter feud between omega Louis and alpha Harry.
✧ Back to Seventeen | crimsontheory | teacher - soccer coach - 26k As a first grade teacher in a small town in Illinois, Harry’s life is pretty simple. He loves his job, is close with his family, and has a best friend he would go to the ends of the earth for. When a new soccer coach starts at the local high school, things start to get a bit more exciting for Harry. Because that coach just happens to be Louis Tomlinson; the guy Harry was unrequitedly in love with in high school. Or the one where Louis moves back to his hometown and Harry realizes he’s still not over his high school crush.
✧ Sigh for Sigh | logogram | historical - a/b/o - regency - miscommunication - pining - marriage of convenience - 11k When his father's sudden illness forces Harry to get married in a hurry, he's delighted that Lord Louis Tomlinson is the one who makes him an offer. Being married to Louis is just as wonderful as he imagined, except for one thing-- they haven't mated yet. Or the one where they're both idiots, Harry's afraid to say what he's thinking, and Louis's just trying to be honorable.
✧ We Can Find a Place to Feel Good | yeah_alright | 1960s - High School - school dances - 8k 14-year-old Harry is ecstatic to finally be old enough to experience the time-honored tradition of school dances. But with each year that passes and each dance he attends, he’s realizing they’re not all he used to hope they’d be. Especially when he can't actually dance with the person he most wants to. Maybe he and Louis can figure out their own ways to keep dancing, anyway.
✧ At Risk, I Fold | clare328 | canon compliant - established relationship - angst - emotional hurt/comfort - miscommunication - anxiety - implied/referenced alcohol abuse - 15k 2015 is a stream of hotel rooms and whisky on the rocks, tired glances and touching hands under tables. It’s the bears and the bees under a rainbow sky, and Harry and Louis have to figure out how to grow up together, instead of apart.
✧ Carry These Feelings | LadyLondonderry | fae Á faires - established relationship - magic - 3k Harry is one of the fae, and has to return to Court once a year to please the Queen. He makes a detour on his way home to Louis. Two weeks and I'll be home.
✧ Hung Up High in the Gallery | lovelarry10 | friends to lovers - slow burn - pining - 14k "Louis, lay still!” Louis sighed loudly, and Harry watched his chest puff out as he inhaled deeply, the breath he let out loudly making Harry’s curls shift. “I am, stop being so fussy. Can I see yet?” “Nope,” Harry remarked, smiling to himself. “I’m doing your chest next. Shit, this is going to look so good, Lou. Your tan and these colours… why haven’t we done this before?” “Because we haven’t been this drunk in a while, and it never occurred to me until tonight?” ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ When Harry’s best friend, Louis, comes to support him at his art show, he decides they need to do some celebrating afterwards. How fast do the lines between friends and lovers get blurred ... or better, get painted?
✧ Love you in the dark | Perzikje | historical - wedding night - arranged marriage - dubious consent - 10k The story of a historical wedding night: in which Louis is quite unaware as to just how clueless his brand new husband is about sex. They try their best to figure it out together.
✧ Victorian Boy | audreyhheart | historical - victorian - royalty - enemies to friends to lovers - slow burn - angst - murder mystery - 101k Victorian AU. Harry the virgin Duke of Somerset knows little of love, while Louis the sly Duke of Warwick knows too much. When the two dukes come together for the Bilsdale fox hunt in York, Harry finds himself drawn into Louis' bed. But when secrets from Louis' dark past come to light, Harry fears that the fox isn't the only one being hunted.
✧ the anticipation of knowing you | sweetrevenge | strangers to lovers - neighbors - light angst - 13k Hello Neighbor! Just wanted to let you know that you were having sex so loud and scarily I called our building manager and security officer because I thought you were hurt. P.S. I sent them away when I heard you yell ‘cock’. I’m sorry that I heard that, but I wanted you to know in case they stopped by to check on you or something. Sorry! Your neighbor Louis Tomlinson in apartment #306 After Louis overhears his next door neighbor having sex, he doesn’t really expect anything but awkward hallway encounters to come from it. Instead, he’s surprised to find himself in a whirlwind pen pal relationship with the sweet, albeit loud, baker next door.
✧ We'll Be All Right | dandelionfairies | married couple - accridents - 13k Harry is performing his one night only show in LA but there are four very important people missing.
✧ The Last Song of Your Life | reminiscingintherain | famous/not famous - Rays of Sunhsine - homophobia - 21k As Harry glanced around at all of the faces, he froze as a very familiar pair of blue eyes leapt out at him. A pair of eyes that he hadn’t seen since before the One Direction bomb exploded. A pair of eyes that he never expected to see again. ~~~~ or the famous/not famous AU, with first love, miscommunication, interfering bandmates, and adorable little sisters.
✧ Her | jaerie | a/b/o - trans character - transitioning - dysphoria - anxiety - quarantine - 7k The buttery swipe of a high quality lipstick was almost a sexual experience in and of itself. This time a deep colour with purple undertones which drew out the emphasis of long, dark lashes and perfectly contoured cheekbones. It was a look for loose and styled curls, feeling the classy formal nightclub vibes reflected back from the mirror. The silky plum coloured slip dress would be perfect to debut. The tags still needed to be cut free from the new garment that hung in the closet, but tonight was the night to set it free. When Harry gets home, she can finally be who she wants to be. Letting someone else in always feels like a distant daydream to her... until it suddently isn't.
✧ Loving You's the Antidote | lululawrence | Stylinshaw - a/b/o - touch deprivation - hospitalization - soulmates - polyamory - anxiety - friends to lovers - no smut - 11k Nick and Harry had never been an obvious match. When eighteen-year-old Harry, newly presented as an omega, came home freshly bonded to Nick, a man nine years his elder and a beta no less, Anne had been more than skeptical and Eileen had shared some harsh words of her own. That didn’t deter them, though, and their families soon realised there really was something special about the bondmates that allowed them to work together almost seamlessly. It was only a few months later that Harry started getting sick. Or the one where Harry and Nick have been able to keep Harry's disorder at bay over the course of their relationship, but when they move to London and away from their support system, they find themselves in desperate need of help.
✧ Like A Neon Sign | reminiscingintherain | canon compliant - mentions of death - fluff - 8k Harry had always been perfect to Louis, through every age, through every stage, and in all the important ways, he was proud to have been able to witness the growth that Harry had experienced first-hand.
✧ We Had Everything | lightswoodmagic (sarah_writes) | exes to lovers - getting back together - famous/not famous - 3k “You know Harry’s coming, yeah?” Louis’ fingers twitched, faltering where he was straightening the knot in his tie as he tried to ignore the false nonchalance in Zayn’s voice. He had no idea how he missed the name on the invite list, how he skipped over the initials on the small gifts, didn’t notice the elegant swirl of Harry’s name inked onto an emerald green place card. Or, Louis and Harry fell apart, and Louis' never forgiven himself. He gets a second chance at Zayn and Liam's wedding.
✧ True To Your Heart | reminiscingintherain | Mulan AU - a/b/o - 13k The world was at war with itself. In the small country of Enilenif, in a tiny, often overlooked corner of the world, young Alphas were quickly signing up to fight, desperate to protect their Omegas and their country as Aidem began to attack their borders. A few defiant Omegas tried to enlist as well, but were firmly turned away with disapproving looks by the staff in the office. Harry Styles was one such Omega, sighing heavily as he kicked at a small stone on his walk home.
✧ What the Water Gave Me | larryatendoftheday | fantasy - mermaids - long distance relationship - 29k When a mermaid crawls out of the sea to listen to Harry sing, it changes everything.
✧ it’s hard for me to go home | localopa | angst - breakup - getting back together - 5k don’t call me baby again
✧ The Prince and the Thief | jaerie | Fairy Tale - a/b/o - strangers to lovers - violence - kidnapping - threats of rape/non-con - 19k Harry is an omega prince locked in a tower and Louis is the thief sent to kidnap him. Nothing turns out as planned.
✧ Up On The Shore | wordsnnotes | Eroda AU - magic - epistolary - friends to lovers - childhood friends - emotional/psychological abuse - angst - long-distance relationship - domestic violence - 34k Magic has been outlawed on Eroda ever since President Cowell came into power, and all the magic people had to go live on the island of Stonell. Things are not looking good for Harry when he finds out he's a magician and his abilities seem more and more out of control. Thankfully, his best friend Niall's mother has the idea to put him in touch with Louis, a magician boy living on Stonell. They begin a secret correspondence and drama ensues. Or: Louis hides his feelings under sarcasm, Harry is too sweet for his own sake, everyone is a rebel, the mums are amazing, Harry's dad is a jerk, and I'm struggling to make it understandable without using normal narration.
✧ this town's just an ocean now | louistomlinsons | exes to lovers - friends to lovers - summer romance - miscommunication - childhood friends - light angst - fluff - 31k “I have really great friends. Do you remember Louis? You guys were always hanging out when you were growing up.” Harry remembers Louis. Harry remembers Louis. Suddenly, his throat feels way too dry, despite the ice cream he keeps licking at. He chokes a little on a chocolate chip before saying, “I, uh. I remember Louis.” Her face brightens. “We have dinner every Sunday. He owns the house now. His parents moved further north, and he wanted to stay here, so they just gave it over. Now if you want to worry about someone being lonely, that’s who I worry about.” inspired by watermelon sugar, featuring picnics on the beach and boys being dumb
✧ I Am the Blinking Light | dearmrsawyer | ghosts - shipwreck - 19k There is a legend of a lighthouse far out to sea. It can’t be found on any map, and those who do find it never return. They say a ghost haunts the lighthouse, and you can hear it calling out in loneliness on the ocean waves.

Monsters at Work: The Jokester Generation  Part Three: Life on the Other Side
There are many parents who’d call their child a miracle.  For Liam and Noelle Rae however, they’d come to use that term in a somewhat literal sense.  On the night when Mary Susanna Rae came into the world, her introduction wasn’t without… complications.  The newborn’s breathing was irregular, her lips and fingers were a chilling blue hue, and she came out gasping instead of crying.  The girl was showing signs of respiratory distress, and for the first-time parents, they were in a state of panic fearing their little girl wouldn’t make it through the night.  Thankfully, doctors were able to get the newborn to an incubator at lightning speed.  And, within a few days, little Mary Rae was stable enough to be returned to her exhausted, but overjoyed parents.  She’d need to return a few more times to the hospital, to ensure things were running smoothly.  But otherwise, the Raes were cleared to bring their daughter home.
Besides that little scare, little Mary Rae had a rather average infancy, with parents more than eager to smother their daughter in love and as many gifts they could buy.  While Liam’s job as an insurance agent didn’t mean the family was rolling in money, he was more than willing to splurge where he could on his little miracle.  And, to be fair, the mountain of baby toys, clothes and food they’d received as gifts from friends and extended family members meant the new parents didn’t have to worry as much about supplies for the first couple of months.  In spite of all this love and support, there was always a twinge of fear in their hearts, one that had never fully gone away since their daughter’s rocky introduction to the world.  While the hospital check-ins were completed, and the two were assured that there should be no further problems with Mary, it’s hard not to shake the fear of something going wrong with their little girl, something spontaneous, something they couldn’t prepare for.  For Noelle Rae, this would occasionally lead her to spend nights in her daughter's room, wanting to be sure she could jump in the second something seemed off with her baby’s breathing.  But as long as they kept her close and cared for, their fears would slowly start to wane.
By the time Mary was two, the Raes’ worries were nearly dissipated.  Which was good, because this high-energy little lady was more than enough to keep them busy without anxiety about her breathing.  The toddler would insist on chasing every cat or dog that she came across in hopes of petting it.  She’d sing and dance herself to exhaustion with zero prompting.  She’d given her parents more than their share of heart attacks during games of hide-and-seek where she accidentally led them to believe she’d escaped the house.  Childproof locks in the Rae household were a must.  Thankfully, it appeared Mary also inherited her mother’s artistic drive.  If someone needed to keep her in place, just put some paper and a box of crayons in front of her and she’d stay still for a solid hour, perfecting each of her masterpieces.  Sure, there were nights where Mary would insist on sleeping in their room.  But hey, what kid didn’t go through a phase where they were terrified of a monster hiding under the bed or in the closet?  As long as Noelle and Liam were able to be there for their girl, there was nothing they couldn’t handle… right?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was an early Autumn morning when Liam Rae heard his wife’s cries.  He rushed out of his room to find her frantically scrounging in a closet.  According to Noelle, when she’d left to wake their daughter, she was nowhere to be seen.  This wasn’t the first time little Mary had gotten up early to try and coax one of her parents into a game of hide-and-seek, so she wasn’t immediately worried.  Of course, most games didn’t take over an hour with no sign of the toddler.  Starting to worry, Noelle began calling out to Mary, then outright ordering her to come out of her hiding spot.  With no daughter to be seen or heard, she began to check the closets and locked rooms, almost hopeful she’d accidentally forgot to lock a room and her baby was just snoring away somewhere.  Soon, Liam joined in the search, with both parents entering a state of panic.  By the time they’d turned their home inside out, no Mary in sight, and they triple-checked the front and back doors to ensure she couldn’t have gotten out of the house, they finally called the cops.
The rest of the day went by in a blur, a horrible, exhausting blur.  Hours were spent in questioning with the police, along with calls out to every neighbor they knew, asking if any of them had seen their daughter that morning, or any suspicious people near the house.  The police weren’t able to find any signs of forced entry.  And upon re-examination with the parents, with the exception of a few missing blankets and toys, there was nothing that could be considered unusual about Mary’s room.  It was as though the toddler had vanished into thin air.  Leaving the Raes on the verge of a breakdown.  After the initial interviews and investigations were completed, the parents were told it would take a few hours to finalize the missing-child report, leaving them to mull over the day’s events before the police could begin broadening their search.  Despite the assurances and messages of support from their neighbors, it wasn’t enough to keep away the air of despair that followed the parents the rest of the day.  After almost losing their little girl when she was born, they were facing a potential future where they may never see her again.  And once again, there was nothing they could do.  It gave Noelle flashbacks to Mary’s birth, the doctors rushing the newborn to get proper treatment.  While the exhausted mother was in a state of delirium from the medications taken to help alleviate the pain, and confused terror as to why she couldn’t hold her daughter.
That following night was especially difficult for the couple, just trying to be there for each other as they cried themselves to sleep.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So imagine the shock they felt when Mary popped out of her room the following morning, right the f*ck outta nowhere, asking for a snack.  What started as shock shifted to jubilation as Noelle and Liam held their daughter tight, checking her over for injuries through tear-filled eyes.  Mary herself seemed fine, with no noticeable scratches or scars, not even a tear in her pajamas.  But it’s clear something has happened to her.  Her hair is disheveled and in need of brushing.  There’s a distinct smell on the toddler, but one her parents can’t discern.  She’s missing a sock. And still, the parents can’t find the missing blanket and toys.  None of this makes any sense.  But in the moment, their miracle is alive and safe, and they’re more than happy to revel in this moment of peace.
“And yes sweetie, Daddy will get you some Cheerios, just let us have this.”
Things however got a bit more complicated when it came to explaining things to the police.  The Raes thought the missing toys should’ve been enough to prove that something was in their home and took their daughter.  But as the police repeatedly explained, there wasn’t enough evidence to send an APB on someone who, for all intents and purposes, appeared and disappeared out of thin air.
Of course, evidence or not, this event had some crazy ramifications for the people of this quiet neighborhood.  There were many families with young children that were suddenly fearful that someone could come for their own, and they’d be powerless to stop them.  A lot of households were investing in extra locks and security systems.  A Neighborhood Watch was established, but all it really seemed to do was stir up further anxiety and paranoia within the adults.  There were those who believed the Raes fabricated the whole kidnapping in a sick ploy for attention.  There were petty people who were using the situation as a means to place suspicion on neighbors they didn’t like.  A curfew was attempted, but that just made the teens in the area grow restless, many sneaking out in defiance and putting further stress on the parents.  What seemed like a quiet, easy-going suburbia was slowly devolving into one of suspicion and anxiety, with everyone trying to find someone they can put the blame on.  Things only got worse when one Gabriella Harlin, through a long line of accusations, was discovered to have been laundering money from her job to pay for her family's many extravagances.
Some families were driven to move out because of the harassment they were facing on a daily basis.  Time and time again the police were called in to deal with reports of vandalism.  Eventually, even the local news caught wind of the chaos and began to ask people for interviews, the Raes especially since they were the ones considered to be the start of the whole situation.  It would be months before the chaos would eventually die down, but enough damage was done that after the dust settled, things on Langdale Avenue were never the same.  No matter how bad things seemed outside their home, Noelle and Liam Rae were facing something far more distressing inside.
Despite what the police had chosen to believe, something happened to little Mary Rae, and her parents were left to try and comfort their child in the aftermath of whatever she'd been through.  No longer was the toddler crawling into their bed whenever she was having a bad night, now her mom and dad were finding her curled up in her closet, eyes with a tinge of red as though she’d been crying.  Before, Mary would do the occasional doodle of a strangely-colored creature, but now she exclusively drew monsters and weird mish-mashes of animals.  And some of them were… rather disturbing; Mary being chased by a giant spider-crab (Waternoose.)  A green beach ball thing with horns screaming in pain (basically 80% of her interactions with Mike.)  A purple salamander being beaten with a bat (Randall.)  And most distressingly, a blue and purple bear-like monster called Kitty is being choked to death by long purple arms (Randall as he was trying to kill Sully before Mike stepped in with that snowball.)  How do they know the monster’s name is Kitty?  Because that’s the name she’s been repeating for the last few weeks, always asking where they were?  The Raes were quick to make the connection between this strange creature and the girl’s disappearance, but there’s still so much of the full picture they didn’t know.
So yeah, between trying to take care of their daughter and having their neighbors and the local news going nuts outside their home, Liam and Noelle had their hands full for a few months.  There was a very serious consideration to move to a new city, even if it meant money would be tight.  But one of the things that held them back on this decision, once again, was their daughter.  Despite her new habits and her occasional bouts of moodiness, Mary always seemed the most comfortable in her room.  Something about the familiarity always seemed to soothe the girl.  And Liam and Noelle could tell that in this period of madness, this little room of calm was something their kid needed more than ever.  So they agreed to wait things out, but also thought it best to let Mary have some playdates with some of her cousins outside of town, so they could all enjoy a few hours of calm away from the chaos.
Thankfully, things eventually died down.  Sure, things were still strained between neighbors, but by then, everyone’s name had been dragged through the mud at some point.  So everyone that was left was willing to let bygones be bygones, just to try and return to some level of normalcy.  Little Mary had become a bit more introverted since her return, but with time and care from her family, she would soon regain her old chipper attitude, even if she’d become wary around new people.  But hey, after everything she’d seen her neighbors put themselves through, the Raes weren’t surprised that their daughter wasn’t as trusting around unfamiliar adults.
In the end, everyone wanted to put this whole affair behind them, and the Raes were more than happy to do so.  When asked, Liam and Noelle would usually be as vague as possible in regards to Mary’s disappearance and the explosive aftermath of their neighborhood.  To be fair, with as little unbelievable evidence as there was, it wasn’t too hard for either of them to skim over the details.  And as their daughter’s attitude began to improve, the Raes also did their best to put her distressing past behind them.  Afterall, no matter how much they may have yearned for an answer, little Mary simply wasn’t able to explain, and in a few years, it was likely the whole terrible affair would become a faded memory in the child’s mind.  But Liam, always the one to try and think ahead, decided to hold on to some of Mary’s stranger doodles, while he and Noelle usually disposed of the others.  Who knows?  Maybe once their daughter was old enough to form sentences, something in her old drawings would be enough to spark a memory of what truly happened.  But that was no longer important.  What was important was that their daughter, their miracle, was alive and safe.  And this time, with God as their witness, she was going to have as normal and loving a life as Liam and Noelle Rae could possibly provide, weirdness be damned!  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Uh… hi
Ok, just a reminder, I was two when everything happened.  So if you’re expecting a detailed account of my first time in Monstropolis, I’m probably not the person you want to hear from.  Mike and Sully could probably do a better job at explaining how everything went down. But yeah, outside of a few nightmares, everything else just kinda turned into a blur for me.  But what I do remember, after coming back home, was being sad.  I love Kitty.  I spent plenty of nights by my closet just wishing he’d come back, only to wake up without seeing him.  It hurt.
And outside of that… I guess I was still causing trouble back then.  Because my little disappearing act apparently caused the whole neighborhood to turn on itself.  I know my parents and a lot of the older people there don’t want to talk about it, but come on; the local news was so desperate for a spicy story when they heard about people starting to throw dog sh*t at each other's doors, reporters were on us like a toddler to a stray piece of candy.  I don’t remember much of it myself, but… you know that old Twilight Zone episode where the whole neighborhood goes batsh*t because they think one of them is an alien that’s messing with the power?
<The Monsters are Due on Maple Street?>
(Yeah, that's it!)
I like to think the whole affair was like that.  I guess it makes me feel better about my part in everything.  It’s easier to think things on Langdale Avenue went to sh*t because adults are a bunch of paranoid idiots, instead of blaming myself for getting lost in the first place.  Maybe this is why mom and dad don’t like talking about it.
Anywho…
Ok, I told you I don’t remember much of what happened back then, right?  Well, I definitely remember the day Sully came back.
I was about four and a half.  It was a bit before I had to go to bed, so I was just playing with my toys.  And suddenly, I heard my closet door creaking open.  And who should pop out?  James P. Sullivan himself.  I remember giving him the biggest, tightest hug I could. And it felt so good to feel him hug me back.  He pulled me through his side of the doorway, and I was a little surprised I wasn’t seeing the same scream floor I’d emerged from the first time.  I didn’t really care about that at the moment, I was just happy to see Kitty again.
And… I guess that kind of became the new routine for us.  Every other night when it was late, we’d just spend time with each other.  It took some time for us to coordinate things to find a good time to meet.  While time seems to pass at the same rate on both ends, I think my world’s a couple of hours behind that of the Monster world.  But once we nailed down 11 O’clock as the best meeting time, me and Sully would hang out at least once a week.  Sometimes I’d just show him some of my drawings, or just talk about whatever dumb thought came into my brain that day.  Other times I’d bring in some toys from my room and we’d just play.  Sully usually just went along with whatever I wanted to do, but he says he was fine with that.
Mike on the other hand, he was a bit harder to connect with at the start.  We didn’t hang out as much as me and Sully, but when we did, it usually amounted to him showing off the stuff in his room.  The door station was in his room after all.  But that wound up being pretty fun too.  I think it might’ve been here where my interest in baseball started.  And let’s face it, Mike likes to put on a tough-guy attitude, but he’s a sweetheart deep down.  There was this one night where I was having trouble sleeping, I don’t remember why, and he just sang me this lullaby he came up with on the spot.

And then, a little while later, Celia started popping by for our visits.  The three of them decided to form a … I think the word for it is a throuple?  Whatever the term, they were spending a lot more time together, so it makes sense that Sully would want us to officially meet.  Things were kinda awkward at first; she might’ve known kids weren’t actually toxic, but it must’ve been weird either way to be so close to a human.  But with Sully helping along with introductions, we wound up getting along pretty well.  Mike even taught me how to braid her hair without, you know, accidentally choking her hair.
Since then, my nightly visits were becoming a regular part of my life, and one I looked forward to.  They never lasted longer than about 10 minutes at a time, but I cherished them.  Apparently since they had to steal the Scream cans to power the door station, they always had to conserve energy.  Despite that, I couldn’t help but see these monsters as just another part of my family.  Something that was getting progressively harder to explain as I was getting older.  When a kid’s four or five, it isn’t too weird to hear them talk about strange beings as though they were real people; what kid didn’t have an imaginary friend phase?  When you ask a kid to draw a picture of their family, you don’t really question the weirdly-colored creatures holding the little girl’s hand; she’s just being creative.
It’s when I got older that things started getting complicated.
By the time I was in… I think second grade?  Yeah, by then I was catching on that I needed to start keeping things to myself.  My parents were telling me, in the kindest way they could, that I was starting to get too old for imaginary friends.  To be fair, I think a part of that was because I had gotten into 3 fights by then with other kids because they were telling me my monster family couldn’t be real.  I’m not sure what got me to react so violently, and I don’t think that instinct ever went away.  I just got better at hiding it around other people.
(...where was I going with this?)
<You were gonna tell them about the dentist incident>
(No I wasn’t!)
<I think it would help keep things interest- >
(No it wouldn’t!  So f*ck off and let me tell my own d*mn story!)
<Alright, geez>
Ok, so, I was starting to act out, and I was finally catching on that others weren’t believing my monster story.  Between all that stuff and what went down when I was 2, it was getting hard for a lot of the other parents to feel comfortable with me around their kids.  The term “problem child” started getting thrown around, and that just made me more frustrated.  Which made me more reliant on my time with Sully, which made me more frustrated that it just wasn’t safe for me to tell anyone the truth.
As I got older, it felt like I was seeing the Monster world less and less.  Sully had big plans for his world, and they were taking up more and more of his time.  By the time I was in fifth grade, we were meeting maybe once a month.  It meant we had more time to talk, but it also felt like so much had to get crammed into the time we had.  Me getting onto the baseball team.  Mike and Celia tying the knot.  Getting my first real friend.  Sully meeting up with some kinda monster group for his plans to make Laugh power a thing.  Saying goodbye before I spent my first summer away from home.  Mike and Sully tying the knot, kinda.  It was an unofficial ceremony where they just kinda shared vows and had a lot of cake from some fancy bakery.  I actually got to attend that, since they were doing it in Mike’s room.
And… I’m not sure what else to say.  Things pretty much kept on like that through high school, and even beyond that.  Keeping this secret, it hasn’t been easy,  But I can’t imagine a life without my family, all of it.
<… Uh, you’re kinda leaving out a lot of backstory stuff>
(I guess.  But they’re not reading this to hear my entire life story)
<I feel like your life is crazy enough that they’d be pretty okay with hearing your life story.  Learning about an entire world of monsters, leading a double life, finding love, not to mention all that stuff with Sid- >
(OKAY!  That’s a little more than they need to know… I think.  Who’s even reading this?)
<I don’t know, I think Silver’s just using this as a way to play around with her writing style for the story>
(God, I gotta deal with enough people looking down on me back home.  I don’t need a bunch of people online trying to dissect every little detail of my life. Are we done here?)
<I guess.  You know, you don’t need to be so hard on yourself.  You’ve had a lot of stuff happen to you that wasn’t in your control.  You could stand to try and be a bit more honest with others...>
-Boo grinding her teeth in aggravation-
<But hey, through it all, you’ve been a pretty amazing person.  Somebody who’d do anything for the people she loves.  You’re loyal, strong, open-minded, sweet, and you’ve got the biggest heart of any kid I know.  We all think that.  And hey, you’ve always got me to talk to, no matter what>
(…
Thanks Zowie.  So… are we done here?)
<Yeah, I think we’ve done enough to leave ‘em hooked for the next chapter>
(And how much longer ‘till I actually get to be in this AU thing?)
<Uh, I don’t know.  Silver says it might be another chapter of background stuff before we get things rolling with the real story.  And then she still needs time to properly introduce Tylor>
(Oh God.  Stay tuned folks, looks like it’s gonna be a while
Wait… I thought I was the protagonist of The Jokester Generation, who the f*ck is Tylor?)

to make the season bright
Summary: Killian's been in love with his roommate, Emma, for as long as he's known her. But when she admits to him that she's lost a sentimental Christmas present, how can he prove to her that she means more to him than what would've been underneath the tree that year?
[Read on Ao3] A/N: Wow, I can't believe that this is my 6th year running for doing Captain Swan Secret Santa! And I still get someone new every year! This is a gift for @resident-of-storybrooke who has been absolutely so lovely to chat with over the last month! I hope you like your gift! Thanks to @cssecretsanta2020 for organizing this year’s event!
Shoutout to @kmomof4, @teamhook, @lonelyspectator12, @hollyethecurious and the entire CSMM discord who kept me motivated while I was writing!

Killian Jones was a neat man.
His days from the Navy—and Liam’s strict rules from his childhood—instilled that habit in him. And while he was well aware that not everyone would feel the same as he did, he was not so tested until he started living with Emma Swan.
He’d met Emma at a party. Her boyfriend at the time had gotten very aggressive after copious amounts of eggnog and tried to swing and Killian, who’d promptly flipped Walsh and broke Ruby’s coffee table. Ruby was easily persuaded to forgive once Killian had bought her a new coffee table.
At first, he was sure that Emma hated him for what had happened until a few weeks later, when she’d demanded, eyes aglow with fire and determination, that she teach him how to flip people over. She’d cited it was necessary for her job, and he hadn’t quite known what that meant until he saw her flip a skip onto his back when he tried to punch her.
Their self-defense lessons after his shift then turned into quick lunches, which turned into movies nights with just them in addition to their friend group’s movie nights. It was during a group movie night that it was revealed that despite breaking up with Walsh at the Christmas party, he was still living in the apartment because Emma couldn’t afford the rent by herself. While Emma was surprisingly prudent in her savings given her general cavalier to almost everything else in her life including what she ate and the state of her room, she was only paid as long as she could work. Any long-term injury would send her careening backwards in her savings, and letting Walsh live in the apartment was a way to offset the financial risk.
Killian, a life-long believer in good form, simply wouldn’t stand for it. Since the apartment was in Emma’s name only, Walsh had no claim to it. And surprisingly to all (or unsurprisingly) that as soon as Regina mentioned her sister was single, Walsh had no problem moving out of Emma’s apartment, allowing Killian to move in.
So here he was, 9 months later, trudging up to the apartment that he and Emma shared.
His cheeks flushed even though no one was around.
The first time he’d mentioned that he was moving in with Emma, his brother had squawked and protested that he should’ve known Killian was seeing someone. And every time Killian spoke to Liam, Liam always asked if he and Emma started dating yet. Which…they were not a couple, they were just friends. Though Killian would’ve absolutely dated Emma in a heartbeat, if given the opportunity. She was beautiful, strong, and incredibly intelligent in a way that surprised people who were just meeting her. He absolutely adored her and cherished every moment he spent with her. But with the strength of their bond also came with the vulnerabilities Emma allowed him to see. She had been betrayed, hurt, and let very few people know what was truly going on in her mind. He was honored that after such a short time, she had let him into the circle that only included a handful of people. So he didn’t push her for anything romantic, for fear that if his intentions were misperceived that she would draw her walls up again. Not that he blamed her. She’d been disappointed by so many people in her life, and it would kill him if he ever joined those numbers.
Besides, what sort of a man would force his intentions by someone with whom he cohabitated a space with? Well, Walsh would, he could hear Emma’s derisive remark in her head. Still, he began marching up the steps in their apartment complex, hoping that Emma could hear. Tonight was the night that they were exchanging gifts before he went off to his brother’s house and she went off to her brother’s house. It was a tradition that Emma valued most highly, having missed her fair share of Christmases in her youth. Emma had been passed around the foster system almost her whole life until she’d met Ruth Nolan at age 16. Well, correction: she’d met Ruth’s son David (her now brother), who had brought her home to his mother on her first day of school, and Ruth had done everything humanly possible to keep Emma with them.
Killian, having been taken in by his older brother when his brother had emancipated from their father, could sympathize with wanting spend time with family. Though he was sure that, knowing Emma, she’d been caught up in something and waited until the last possible moment to wrap his gift despite her imminent departure. He knew this because he’d walked in on her wrapping his gift on his birthday. She’d scowled when he laughed, and her cheeks had turned red with embarrassment. But it had been the perfect gift and she still had surprised him with a wonderful chocolate cake.
His heart warmed affectionately upon how she’d gone out of her way to get it from his favorite bakery, one that marked the halfway point between where he lived and his brother’s. He recalled the shy smile that tugged at the edge of her lips when she told him that she hoped he liked his cake. It was the memory of his birthday that had inspired him to go out of his way to get a particularly excellent birthday for her in October, and now an excellent Christmas present. For her birthday, he’d gotten her a pair of high heeled boots that the saleswoman assured him were comfortable, and now were Emma’s go-to piece of footwear for chasing skips.
For Christmas, he’d gotten her baby blanket repaired. She’d been left at a hospital with nothing but a knitted blanket with her name on it. It was all she had given toward any clue toward her parents. But a drunk Will had accidentally unraveled it at Halloween, and although she’d tried to hide it from their friends, Emma was absolutely distraught about the destruction of her blanket.
He was picturing the look on her face, hoping her eyes would light up with joy and he could watch her fingers reverently trace the knitwork when he arrived at the front door and was overcome with the notion that something was very wrong. The door was slightly ajar, which was unusual for their apartment. Immediately shifting into high alert, he opened the door gently. The apartment was beyond a disaster.
Things were thrown about everywhere, the window was thrust right open and one of the flowerpots was shattered on the ground. Killian began to catalog all of the damage, wondering whether or not there had been a robbery, when he heard the tiniest of sniffles. His blood ran cold, his shoulders became stiff and tight and his heart began to pick up in his chest. “Emma?” he called, trying to keep his worry at bay. As he moved through the apartment, there was a path of destruction no matter where he went. His mind kept picturing horrible scenario after horrible scenario, particularly as Emma’s sobs became louder and louder as he approached her bedroom.
“Emma?” he tried again, not hearing a response. Unable to stand it any longer, he thrust the door open. Her room had seemingly taken the worst hit; even though it was normally in a state of disarray, the destruction in her room could only be described as catastrophic. And there was Emma, in the middle of it, sobbing like the world was ending. He immediately scooped her up and placed her on the bed, frantically assessing her for injury. His Emma was a tough lass, and so for her to be crying like this meant the absolute worst of the worst.
When she seemed to realize it was him, she wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face against him. He wrapped himself around her protectively, stroking the back of her hair. “You’re all right, love,” he whispered softly. “You’re safe. I’m here…it’s all right, Emma.”
“’s not!” Emma choked out, curling up against him, her entire body heaving and shaking with the force of her cries. “It’s not all right!”
“What happened?” he asked, trying to keep the desperation out of his voice. Though he was not entirely unsure that she was unharmed, there still was the state of the apartment to contend with. He was desperate to clean it, but if there needed to be a police investigation, he couldn’t touch the damn thing.
Her shaking damn near broke his heart and he held her closer, shushing her gently. “It’s okay, love, it’s okay,” he promised her again.
“It’s not!” she hiccupped. “I lost it! I can’t find it!”
His heart picked up again, wondering if she’d gone looking for her baby blanket for comfort and was unable to find it. Suddenly, he felt like the world’s biggest asshole, taking her blanket without permission. It was something she treasured and was comforted by and he had no right to take it without her permission.
He looked down at her, preparing to make a million and one apologies to her and to assure her that her baby blanket was safe and she could have it right then and there, when she added miserably, “I lost your Christmas present!”
“What?” he asked, dumbfounded. He nearly laughed at the absurdity of it all but seeing how devastated Emma was kept his tongue in check. He knew that she wouldn’t have appreciated his chuckling.
She pulled away her head hung low as she continued to cry. “You must hate me!” she declared, still not looking at him. “I know it’s Christmas and I’m so sorry…I should’ve taken better care of it…”
It was only then that he realized that she’d mistaken his shock for anger, and he gently reached for her hand. “Emma, love,” he tried to soothe softly, running his thumb across her knuckles. “It’s okay. I’m not angry…”
“You will be when you find out what it is,” she muttered, her head still hung low.
“Emma, trust me, whatever my gift was supposed to be, it cannot be worse than the scenario I’d concocted in my head when I discovered the door ajar and the apartment destroyed,” he replied, reaching for her again. Maybe there was a part of him that still needed to reassure himself that she was safe. She finally looked up at him, her head cocked to the side curiously. “I…when I saw everything in disarray and heard your cries, I…I thought we’d been robbed and you’d been hurt,” he admitted shyly, taking his gaze away from hers now.
Her emerald eyes were wide with shock and her mouth hung open a little bit, still needing to reconcile every so soften that people cared about her. Emma’s jaw slid open as she stared at him, her tears stopping almost immediately at the revelation. “You were worried about me?” she squeaked.
“Aye, of course I was,” Killian breathed, holding her close to him. “Everything had gone to pieces and the apartment was not how I left it this morning.”
Emma sighed, scrubbing at her eyes. “I’m sorry. I wanted to clean it up before you got home but then I couldn’t find your present and—" Her breathing picked up again and tears began pooling in her eyes.
“Hey, hey, hey,” Killian murmured, cupping her cheek in his hand. His thumb gently dragged across her cheek.
“And now I’m gonna leave you with all of this cuz I’m supposed to go to David’s!” she babbled. Her body seemed to tremble viciously in his hold. It was clear she’d been on edge and frantic for a while now, only just coming down. Her hand trembled visibly in his hand, and he’d never seen Emma so emotional or terrified. She’d come home battered and bruised, he’d stayed with her overnight in the hospital, but he’d never seen her like this.
His heart seemed to stop. He knew that she held great stock in her trusty bug, but he was unable and unwilling to place her life at risk on it. She was in no position to drive.
“Love, I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to go to be driving in the condition you’re in,” Killian said softly. “You know David won’t hold it against you if you delay your trip another day. You’re in no state to be driving right now. It’s dark, and you need to be at your best when you get on the road.”
Emma’s lips came together in a thin tight line. “Trust me,” she said sadly. “You’re not gonna want to spend the rest of the night with me and I should go.”
Closing her eyes, she hung her head. “Liam called a few weeks ago, and said he found some of your mother’s hand sewn ornaments in the attic...he wanted to know if...if you wanted them for your birthday. I told him no, that they’d make a lovely Christmas present.”  Her voice got smaller and smaller as she spoke, and a pit of dread formed in Killian’s stomach.
“I got the box and I don’t know where I put it and I’ve looked everywhere...so I’ll just...I’ll clean up and then I’ll go. You can return my Christmas present if you want to,” she finished quietly, not even daring to look at him. “And...and if you want to move out or if you want me to move out, I understand. I’ll need a few days to find a place, but...but I promise I can clear out.”
Killian took in a shaky breath. The loss hit him harder than he was willing to admit. His mother died when he was quite young, but he remembered her sitting in her rocking chair and sewing any ornament Killian or Liam asked of her. “Did...did Liam send me all of them?” he asked, unable to help the question. There was so much about Emma’s speech that he needed to address and respond to, but he couldn’t cling to the desperate hope that some of the ornaments survived.
“No,” Emma rasped, and she watched him with some trepidation. “I had to beg him to take some of them.”
Killian sighed with some relief, knowing that all wasn’t lost forever. Closing his eyes, he took a few deep breaths. She’d made the decision to save some for Liam. She’d tried to do this nice thing for him. She was always trying to do nice things for him and she deserved the benefit of the doubt.
And if he was honest, she wasn’t particularly the best searcher. Most things she looked at with a half-hearted glance before declaring she couldn’t find them.
So he wasn’t going to let himself believe that his present was gone, until he’d helped her search every last inch of the apartment.
“Let’s clean everything up,” Killian said kindly. “And we won’t discuss anyone moving out until we know for sure it’s lost to the ages and not in a hidden, obscure spot because you were sure you’d remember it later.” He was going to tease her about how many times she’d misplaced her keys, but she’d all but tackled him to the ground before he could take another breath.
He squeezed her tightly as she tucked herself into him. “Are you sure?” she asked, her voice shaking.
“Aye, love,” he promised. “I won’t send you away.” Her whole body seemed to melt at the reassurance. He knew the need for her to hear those words stemmed from her days as a foster child, and he was more than happy to give them.
Seeing how she had clearly and thoroughly mentally lashed herself made it very hard to be angry with her. And if it had turned out that they were gone, he would mourn them like he mourned his mother. He hadn’t known her ornaments had survived after his father seemingly removed every sign of his mother from the house.
And to only know that they existed only when they seemed gone was upsetting, he wouldn’t lie.
But it certainly wasn’t a friendship ending event in his eyes. He would need some space to mourn, but he wouldn’t banish her from her home.
And she needed some tender care at the moment too. It was more than clear that she had done everything in her power to try and relocate them.
He scooped her up in his arms and gently carried her to the couch, which had mercifully been spared. “What—?” she started, pushing herself back up.
His heart seemingly broke again, looking back at her. The circles under her eyes seemed so dark. Her eyes were red and red-rimmed. What kind of awful, imaginary scenarios had she conjured for herself while he’d been thinking the worst?
They were so similar, both scarred by their pasts in different ways.
“I wasn’t joking about you recuperating, Emma,” he said softly. “So I’m gonna make you some cocoa. And when your nerves have settled, you can join me in the cleaning of the apartment.”
“Why are you being so nice to me?” Emma complained, throwing herself dramatically against the couch. “I lost priceless family heirlooms and destroyed the entire apartment…”
“I think you’ve already beat yourself up enough for it, love,” Killian murmured, trying to imbue every ounce of sincerity into his words. He knelt beside her, hoping he was being reassuring. “And while I won’t lie to you: I’ll be devastated if it well and truly is lost, you shouldn’t feel like you have to continue to beat yourself up.”
Emma frowned as she looked at him. She opened her mouth to ask a question, but then closed it. She seemed to slump into the couch, all the fight drained out of her body.
He went into the kitchen to give her some space. In addition to her cocoa, he decided to get some Christmas cookies from his hidden cookie stash. Killian tried not to listen as she declared to her brother and she was the worst person alive and she had no idea how Killian was going to forgive her or how she could even think about enjoying Christmas if she lost his gift.
Emma treasured sentimental things. He knew this about her. But he hoped that he would not forsake her favorite holiday for his sake.
He’d survive without the ornaments. Truly.
But he hoped to god that they found them. As each moment passed, he was becoming more painfully aware that his friendship with Emma may not survive this event. But not from his side.
She would probably keep herself at a distance and put her walls up out of sheer guilt.
He couldn’t stand to be behind those walls again.
He couldn’t stand her not knowing just how important she was to him.
Knowing how sentimental she was, he figured he had one last move in trying to prove her importance in his life. Breathing deeply, he rushed to his room. His bedroom was still immaculate, and so he was able to quickly duck under his bed.
The gift was still neatly wrapped, the bow skillfully placed on top. He smiled softly at the box before heading back out into the living room.
She’d wrapped a blanket around herself and she was curled up on her side.
She’d never looked more beautiful to him.
Killian gently walked toward her, and she tilted her head up at him questioningly. She blinked owlishly at him for a moment, blurting out, “That’s not my hot cocoa.”
He couldn’t help but burst out laughing in spite of himself. “No, it’s not,” he chuckled, putting the box on the table in front of her.
“But why?” Emma protested, her shoulders coming up around her ears. A guarded and caged look entered her eyes.
“Because I need you to know just how important you are to me, Emma. More important than any ornament ever could be.”
“But they were your mother’s,” Emma protested softly. Her voice caught as she added, “I’d kill to have something of my mom’s. All I have is a torn baby blanket.”
“Open your present, love,” Killian insisted softly.
Delicately, she undid his careful wrapping and made sure to save the bow. “It’s a box,” she said, looking up at him, not making a move to open it any further.
“Your gift is inside the box,” he teased.
Her hands stayed firmly folded in her lap. “Killian, I can’t accept this. Especially after what I did. I ruined your Christmas.”
“Love, don’t you know that you’re all I need for Christmas?” The words well and truly flew out of Killian’s mouth before he could stop them. Her head jerked up abruptly and her eyes were wide with shock. He was almost positive that his jaw was hanging open too. But he continued, “Don’t you know, Emma? It’s you. You here and happy is all I want. It’s what I’ve always wanted.” Killian scratched nervously behind his ear. “Perhaps some day as more than friends. But even if you never felt that way about me, it would still be all I’ve ever wanted.”
He could see the desperate flicker of hope enter her eyes, and he could practically see the thoughts chasing themselves across her face. He could say all those kind things to her, even when she had done what she considered to be an irredeemable act.
Because he truly cared for her.
And so he said the one thing he knew he could to confirm Emma’s hope.
“I love you, Emma.”
Before he could blink, his arms were full of her yet again and her mouth cautiously slid against his. He tightened his arm around her before returning her kiss, all but melting with relief that she not only believed in the strength of his feelings but seemed to return them as well.
When they broke apart, she rested his forehead against his. Very quietly, she asked against his lips, “You love me even though I didn’t get you a Christmas present?”
“I’d say you just did, love,” he hummed, chasing her lips again. She pulled away, levelling him with a look that told him that she genuinely did need the reassurance even though the corners of her mouth were twitching as if to fight back a smile. “Aye, love,” he promised. “They’re just ornaments.”
“I’ll make you new ones,” she promised, resting her hand on his chest. “They’ll be ugly and misshapen, but I’ll—” He silenced her again with a soft and gentle kiss, and Killian let out a sigh of relief when Emma seemed to melt against him. When they broke apart again, Emma’s head rest against his shoulder and he swayed with her gently in the kitchen.
“How long have you been hiding my present from me?” she asked, still staring at the box on the coffee table. “And where? I go into your room like all the time, I can’t believe I didn’t find it!”
He chuckled and kissed the top of her head. “Why, I put it in the one place I know you don’t look: under the bed.”
Emma gasped and jerked her head up so quickly that he would’ve had a broken nose if not for his quick reflexes. “I know where the box with the ornaments is!” she cried joyously, tearing herself from his arms. He followed her back to her room, where she was more than halfway under her bed, pushing things out. “I hid it behind a ton of other stuff in case you ever went looking under my bed!” she exclaimed, her voice muffled.
“Why would I go looking underneath your bed, love?” Killian asked, unable to hold back his laughter this time.
“Because hiding anything from you is a full-time job,” Emma retorted happily, wiggling out from under the bed. Her hair was disheveled, her clothes covered in dust, but her eyes gleamed with unadulterated exuberance as she held a small white box on her hand. Liam’s handwriting on the shipping label only confirmed that these were indeed the box of ornaments.
She all but sprung up and thrust the box into his hand. “Open it!” she demanded excitedly. The grin on her face was infectious, and she was every bit of the “kid on Christmas morning” picture, even though she was a fully grown adult.
Looking at Liam’s handwriting and knowing that he was only some clear tape away from being connected with a piece of his mother made his eyes water. Emma’s hand was quick to brush away any tears before they fell, and he dipped his cheek to kiss her palm. “Thank you,” he rasped, his voice too choked with emotion to be any louder. “Really, Emma. This is…”
“Don’t you know that I love you too?” she asked as if it was all the explanation he could’ve ever needed.
“Aye, I do,” he replied, and gingerly opened the box. There were some familiar ornaments that he’d seen in pictures: a kite from her grandmother that dated back to 1895, a pig, a basket, and angel, each one with a hand-embroidered date on it. But the one that caught was one he was not familiar with. The date on the back said 1990, which would’ve been his first Christmas. Gingerly flipping it over, a beautiful swan stared up back at him and he found his eyes watering again.
“Did you know?” was all he could spit out.
“No,” she replied, her voice equally choked up. She gingerly rested her head against his shoulder as she looked into the box of ornaments with him. “But it seems your mom did.”
“Aye…” he chuckled wetly. “So she did.”
“Can we put them on the tree?” Emma asked hopefully, looking up at him. Unable to help himself, he leaned down to kiss her again, pouring his love and thanks into the gentle kiss.
“We should,” he agreed against her lips. “And we will. But only after you open your present.”
Emma rolled her eyes playfully and all but dragged him back to the living room with her. He watched as she opened the box and then immediately shut it again. “Is that…?” she asked.
“Aye, love,” he promised. “It is.” With the most care and reverence he’d ever seen her take with anything, she gently took her repaired baby blanket out of the box. Her fingers gently trailed over the stitching, the letters of her name, all of it, as if to try to prove to herself it was real.
He would never forget the loving and content look on her face for as long as he lived.
It was probably what motivated to get her another box one year later.
Only that one had a ring in it.
And two years later?
She gave him a box with a onesie inside that said “I was Daddy’s Christmas present”.

Part 1, 2 & 3  (also on ao3)
The suns barely rising on the next day when Zayn wakes up. He doesn’t know why he’s awake because he usually sleeps until the sun’s either disappeared again or at least made it’s appearance for a while.
“Morning.” Liam grumbles when Zayn blinks open his eyes.
Their faces are so close together that Zayn feels like he’s going cross eyed trying to look in Liam’s.
“Morning.” He echoes and grins when he moves and Liam’s morning wood rubs against his thigh.
“I’m far too tired to do anything about it.” Liam decides.
“I could do something about it?” Zayn suggest, letting his hand move from where it’s curled up to Liam’s chest to beneath the covers.
He barely gets a hand around him before Liam moves, jolting forward to capture Zayn’s lips in the first kiss of the morning.
“Are you clean?” Liam asks after the kiss had got sloppy and they were both grinding against each other to get some kind of friction.
“I get tested before every client.” Zayn answers.
“I got tested last month,” Liam tells him. “Do you trust me?”
“I--” He pauses because he knows it’s one of Lin’s biggest rules ‘Always use protection’ she’d even underlined it three times and almost broke the pen when she’d added the full stop. “Yeah, yeah I do.”
Liam smiles and leans back to kiss him again and he slides his hand down the length of Zayn’s body before push him to roll over.
The prep is slow and drawn out like Liam’s loving the way it makes Zayn squirm with want. When they finally fuck, it’s at the same pace. It’s morning sex that Zayn’s never experienced because he’s never been with someone who was soft with him (almost loving) and knows exactly what he wants.
It’s not until he’s in the bath and admiring Liam singing to himself while he’s showering that he realises how completely fucked he is. He runs the pad of his fingers across his smiling lips, only to have them widen. He takes them back and sinks under the water, thinking if he drowns himself then he won’t have to deal with the inevitable heartache that will come when he parts from Liam tomorrow.
“Zayn?” Liam calls, voice muffled by the water.
Zayn sits up quickly, coughing on the water that travels up his nose and attempting to wipe the bubbles off his face.
“Everything okay?” Liam asks as he sits on the edge of the bath.
“Washing my hair.” Zayn lies.
Liam nods, even though his face shows he clearly sees straight through Zayn’s lie.
“So, what have we got planned for today?” Zayn asks.
“I’ve got meetings until the afternoon,” Liam replies and reaches out to wipe a bubble from Zayn’s eyebrow. “The car will take you wherever you want to go but come back by at least one.”
“That’s six hours.” Zayn points out because . “What did you wake me up for I could have slept until then?”
“I think you’ll find you woke me up.” Liam defends with a lovely grin.
“I could offer an alternative to those meetings?” Zayn suggest, fiddling with the knot in Liam’s towel.
“As lovely as that offer is,” Liam says and the way he looks at Zayn makes him shiver. “And it is a lovely offer. I really can’t miss these meetings.”
“I’m too knackered to do anything.” Zayn complains.
“Then go back to bed.” Liam says amused.
“I can’t,” Zayn huffs. “You’ve woken me up now.”
“You’ve very dramatic this morning.” Liam observes and runs his fingers through Zayn’s wet hair.
“We were up earlier than the sun,” Zayn points out. “It’s okay to be dramatic before the sun has woken up.”
“I didn’t know that was the rule.” Liam admits.
“Well now you do,” Zayn tells him. “It should be illegal to get up before the sun, Liam. It’s the whole reason it exists.”
Liam smiles and shakes his head like Zayn’s the most absurd person he’s ever met before getting up from the bath and leaving the room.
Zayn soaks in the bath a little longer and when he finally gets out, it’s to find that Liam’s already dressed ready for work.
“What you doing?” He asks when his eyes catch Zayn leaning on the bathroom door.
“Admiring the view.” Zayn says and lets the ‘while I still can’ echo in his mind.
“Isn’t that supposed to be my line?” Liam replies as he comes over to where Zayn is stood, holding out his phone. “Put your number in?”
Zayn takes the phone and puts in his number without asking why. Another one of Caroline’s rules broken, as easy as that.
“Now if you’re not here when I get back I won’t have to interrogate my driver to find out where you are.” Liam explains as Zayn hands him back the phone.
“Or you think I’ll send you dirty pictures while you’re in meetings.” Zayn jokes.
“A man can only hope.” Liam replies with a cheeky smile.
Zayn brushes past him to get to where his suitcase is laid out, simply to stop himself from pinching Liam’s cheek.
“Where are you gonna go?” Liam asks as he picks up his watch to put on his wrist.
“Probably go and bug Harry at work.” Zayn replies noncommittal as he rummages through his suitcase for clean underwear.
“I’ll try not to be long, okay?” He offers as he comes over to where Zayn is now attempting to wriggle in to a pair of fresh boxers.
“Be as long as you want,” Zayn tells him. “I get the leftover muffins if I stay at the cafe until after the lunch break.”
“I won’t be that long.” Liam promises and leans in to brush his lips over Zayn’s cheek.
It’s not for show because they’re the only people in the room. It’s not natural either because Liam freezes where he’s about to pull away, when Zayn doesn’t say anything.
“Yeah, um, I’ll see you later.” Zayn offers dumbly.
Liam hums and finally moves away from him to pick up his wallet and phone from the bed side table.
“I’ll see you in a few hours, Zayn.” Liam says as he heads for the door.
“I’ll be here waiting for you, Liam.” Zayn replies as he had that first morning.
Liam doesn’t freeze up this time, instead he shoots Zayn a wink before disappearing out of the room.
Zayn falls on to the bed and screams in to the mattress, wondering what hell kind of mess he’s got himself in to.
***
‘This meeting is sooo boring that someone actually fell asleep lol x’
Zayn snorts at the photo of a man who’s clearly sat opposite Liam in some kind of board meeting and is fast asleep, his head resting down on his chest and eyes closed.
“Are you sexting?” Emily asks, attempting to look at Zayn’s phone over his shoulder.
There’s a mixture of weird and wonderful people who work at the cafe with Harry. But Emily has to be one of Zayn’s favourite. The best way to explain her is as a cat in human form. She’s sarcastic, hates most people but adores the ones she likes and can disappear for days at a time without a word. She’s also got the worlds best hair, it’s dark purple on top and the shaved sides are dyed green.
“Is it a new part of the service?” Emily pushes, dodging back and forth as Zayn attempts to hide his phone from her. “You sext them to make sure they get their moneys worth even when they’re not with you.”
“You’re a foul human being.” Jodie says from where she’s cleaning the cutlery from the breakfast run. She’s their little book worm, from her dark brown hair (that’s always tied back in a plait) to her thick framed glasses.
“It could be true for all you know,” Emily argues. “Then Zayn’s the foul one.”
Zayn tugs his arm back when Emily goes for the phone and promptly knocks the tub full of sugars off the counter he’s sat on.
“What’s going on?” Harry demands, poking his head in from the back.
“Zayn’s bored so he made a mess.” Emily tattles.
“You can’t stay if you’re gonna be trouble, Z.” Harry says with a stressed sigh.
“Sorry, man.” Zayn apologises as he picks up the sugars.
Emily’s grinning when he stretches back up to put the pot back on the counter.
“Bitch.” Zayn hisses at her.
“Woof.” Emily replies with her wicked grin not moving.
Zayn’s about to say something else but his phone buzzes in his hand so he backs away from the counter and drops in to the closest booth instead.
‘What are you doinnn? x’
Zayn knows he’s supposed to text some bullshit like ‘Thinking of you’ or ‘Missing you’. Caroline once attempted for them to have a call service and he’d actually been pretty good. But he knows he’s only got one more day with Liam and he’s going to indulge a little. Even if it means he doesn’t get paid by Monday, it would be worth it.
‘Bugging the people that work with H but it’s gettin kind of boring. Probs gonna join that bloke in the lad of nod if I stay here any longer x’
He only manages to lift his eyes up from the phone and see tower of sugars that Emily was now building, promptly fall, before the phone buzzes in his hand again.
‘What else could you do to entertain yourself? x’
Zayn grins as he texts back. ‘You x’
“I know that smile.” Harry says and Zayn hadn’t even realised he was back in the room.
Zayn looks up to see him now stood next to Emily, with a frown creating wrinkles in his forehead.
“You’re really a man who should smile,” Emily decides as she brushes her thumb across Harry’s forehead. “These age you a ton.”
“You say the nicest things.” Harry scoffs while keeping his eyes trained on his best friend. “Are you smiling like that because of Liam?”
“I’m not smiling like anything.” Zayn says as his phone buzzes in his hand and he has to bite down on his lip.
‘I’ve got one more meeting but hopeee this keeps u goin xxx’
There’s a picture attached that Liam had clearly taken in a bathroom. He’s stood in front of a mirror, with the hand not holding the phone is pulling up his shirt while his dick hangs limp from where his trousers are unzipped like he’d moved away from the urinals in order to take the photo.
“Fuck.” Zee complains out loud.
This time Emily doesn’t give him chance, she snatches the phone from his hand before he can react.
“Oh my.” She says followed by a squeal. “That’s quite a man, Malik.”
“Give me my phone back.” Zee demands.
Emily doesn’t, she hands the phone straight to Harry who looks down at it and then to Zayn with wide eyes.
“It’s my job!” Zee defends.
Harry stares at him for a really long time but eventually hands the phone back over with a shrug.
“I’m just doing my job.” Zayn says again, as he looks back down at the phone.
‘Sorry if that was too much...’ Liam had text back, obviously worrying when Zayn hadn’t sent the quick reply to his picture like he had been to his text for the rest of the day.
“You dickhead,” Zayn scolds. “You proper fucked it.”
“Don’t blame her,” Harry snaps back. “You’re the one breaking the rules, Z. What would Caroline say.”
“She’d say I’m really fucking good at my job.” Zayn tells him and gets up from the booth. “Excuse me.”
“The mirror on the right at the back is best for photos like that!” Emily shouts after him and then giggles manically when she throws him the finger.
Zayn walks in to the gents bathroom and heads towards the mirror because Emily is a bitch but she does make good suggestions sometimes but before he even has chance to get himself situated for a photo, his phone blows up with Liam’s name.
“Hey,” He answers quickly. “I was about to return the favour.”
“W-what?” Liam asks confused. “I thought you were done with me, I thought I’d taken it to far--”
“Liam, calm down.” Zayn soothes. “I was sat the middle of a bakery with Harry’s very intrusive staff, I needed a good excuse to get away and I needed to get away after that photo, fuck. How can you be that hot?”
Liam lets out a long stressed breath.
“I was honestly about to return the favour.” Zee assures him.
“Where are you?” Liam asks him.
“In the bathroom at H’s bakery,” Zee answers. “Why? Are you back?”
“No,” Liam replies. “I’ll be another hour yet but I thought, uh, I’ve got like a fifteen minute break.”
“Okay..” Zayn starts quietly.
“Get in one of the stalls, yeah?” Liam suggests. “Warm yourself up, I’ll call you back  when I’ve found somewhere to go.”
“Okay.” Zee agrees slowly because the thought of what they’re about to do turns him on, let alone the act itself.
Liam’s mouth is absolutely filthy, is what he finds out five minutes later when he manages to make Zayn come using only words.
“Still got ten minutes to spare,” Zayn pants, as he attempts to come down from his high. “Could do that twice more, if you like.”
Liam lets out a lovely laugh. “If you can get some of those muffins, I’ll meet you back at the hotel for six.”
“Sure.” Zayn agrees easily.
“Goodbye, Zayn.” Liam says.
“Yeah, bye.” Zayn replies and hangs up the phone.
It takes him a few minutes to get his thoughts straight and then clean up the mess he’d made before finally returning to
***
Harry hadn’t pushed him when he’d left the bakery just before closing, he’d handed over a bag full of fresh muffins, told him to be careful and sent him on his way.
The girl on reception gives him curious eyes as he swings the bag back and forth as he waits in front of the lifts but he doesn’t care, he feels happy, for the first time in a long time and even though he knows he’s not following his best friends orders (or his bosses) he’s going to indulge himself for as long as he can.
Liam’s not there when he gets in the hotel room so he puts the muffins in the fridge keep them fresh and moves towards the bathroom to also freshen himself up.
It’s a little more than an hour for Liam to walk through the hotel room door and he looks very upset as he greets Zayn in the living area of the suite.
“I need a cigarette.” He states simply and heads to the balcony.
Zayn hovers because he couldn’t quite read from that one sentence if Liam wanted him to follow or not.
Liam returns to the room, only a few minutes later, a strong smell of smoke following him in.
“What do we have to do tonight?” Zayn wonders as he sits on the edge of the couch.
Liam undoes the top few buttons on his shirt and starts on undoing the ones on his wrists before speaking. “What do you want to do tonight?”
“I think you forgot you’re paying me, babe.” Zayn reminds him.
“I am,” Liam agrees. “Do you smoke anything stronger than nicotine?”
“I don’t usually on a job,” Zayn admits. “Not exactly a professional thing to do, can’t, like, it’ll halt the performance, if you know what I mean.”
Liam barks a laugh and it brings a smile to Zayn’s lips because he’d looked so upset since the moment he’d entered the room and it made him feel a little proud that he could be the one to bring the younger lad back to himself, after what looked like to be a horrible day.
“We could fuck first?” Zayn suggests. “Then smoke?”
“That’s an amazing suggestion.” Liam agrees.
Before Zayn can open his mouth to ask when they should get started, the younger lad stalks across the room to attach their lips.
It’s an hour of fucking and cleaning off the aftermath before they find themselves on the balcony with Liam sat on the balcony wall (much to Zayn’s dismay) while Zayn sits on a chair opposite, his feet kicked up to rest beside Liam, as a tin of Liam’s ‘not nicotine’ sits in his lap.
“Can I ask you something?” Liam asks, tracing the nail of his finger down Zayn’s calf, making him shiver.
Zayn pauses where he’s focused on not overloading the spliff. “Same rules as before.”
Liam nods in agreement.
“Shoot.” Zayn tells him and returns his focus to making the spliff, in case it’s something he can’t handle.
“If you had a way out of this,” Liam starts and he waits and Zayn know he’s not going to finish until he looks at him.
He’s been here before. He’s acted too hard and had guys fall in love with him overnight. These guys are rich, willing to offer him the world and in return he wouldn’t have to do much, other than continue the act for the rest of his life. Which Zayn sometimes thinks is an easy price to pay for a comfortable life. But there’s something that always stops him, a part of his conscious that won’t let him agree.
Zayn finally looks up at Liam and offers him an assured smile.
“You wouldn’t take it,” Liam answers himself. “I could offer you all the money in the world and you wouldn’t take it.”
Zayn shrugs and returns his attention to the task at hand. “I make my own way in this world, it’s unconventional, sure, but it’s mine.”
“What would you do?” Liam asks, fingers now wrapped tightly around Zayn’s ankle. “If you won the lottery tomorrow, what would you do?”
“Buy my mum and my sisters a house,” Zayn decides, without having to really think about it. “Get them off that shitty estate and to a nice area, give my little sister Safaa a better upbringing than I ever could have dreamed of.”
Liam nods in understanding. “What about for yourself?”
“Might buy a studio,” Zayn says with a shrug as he licks the end of the paper to seal it shut. “I wouldn’t need to sell my art if I was rich so would probably paint what I want, without worrying what other people think.”
“Not caring what other people think, sounds good.” Liam decides
Zayn hums and puts the spliff between his lips before lighting it.
“What happens tomorrow?” Liam asks, as he watches him take the first drag.
Zayn takes another two drags before holding the joint out to the younger lad.
“I’m supposed to get on a plane to LA and forget about you?” Liam guesses, as he brings the join to his own lips.
“You don’t have to forget about me,” Zayn assures him. “I’m still going to exist in the world.”
“But after tomorrow, I won’t be paying you anymore so I won’t be able to see you anymore.” Liam points out.
Zayn takes the joint back from him when he offers it and brings it to his lips without answering because he doesn’t know what to say, the thought of going back to his tiny flat with Harry tomorrow and never seeing this beautiful boy’s face again, makes his chest hurt. But admitting that would be breaking the only rule he holds for himself when it comes to this job and he can’t bring himself to do it.
“If I cancel my flight tomorrow,” Liam starts, after they’d let a silence hang in the air for a few minutes. “Could I see you again?”
“Without the contract?” Zayn asks.
Liam nods his head, looking hopeful.
“What we do?” Zayn wonders.
“We could stay here?” Liam suggests. “Or we could go somewhere, I could take you somewhere, let me take you somewhere.”
Zayn takes a few more drags before holding the joint out. “Where?”
“My dad has a cabin in Scotland,” Liam tells him, ignoring the joint completely now. “Let’s go there?”
“For how long?” Zayn asks, bringing the joint back to his lips.
“However long we can.” Liam states.
Zayn would like to blame the small weed he’d put in to his system for how easy it is for him to say ‘yes’ but he knows he would be lying because as he stares at those innocent brown eyes he convinces himself they could make this work, he convinces himself that there is a chance Liam had managed to return his feelings in three short days, he convinces himself that this won’t end how he and Louis had with pain and sorrow for him and seemingly the fairy-tale ending for the other party involved.
When he says ‘yes’ he breaks the final rule and with that broken, there’s no turning back, even if he wanted to.

THE WASTELAND - INTO THE DEEP, DARK THICK OF IT (11/?)
Tumblr media
Hey, everyone! It's been literal weeks since I've posted anything, but I'm coming at you today with chapter 11 of THE WASTELAND, my @cssns 2020 fic! (With lovely cover art by @spartanguard and chapter art to follow!!!)
Some triggers: this story is rated TEEN, mostly for violence. It takes place during wartime, and some of the characters go through some violence and torture. If you need more information about this, please just message me!
SUMMARY:  In a world that has been saturated in war for as long as anyone can remember, Emma Swan has rebuilt her life as far away from the chaos as possible, opening her own maternity hospital after spending too many years in makeshift battlefield aid stations. But one night, a bloodied and battered soldier finds her hospital trying to get away from an enemy with a penchant for torture and a personal vendetta against him. With the help of Emma’s childhood friend Prince David and a motley collection of humans and magic-wielders, the quest to save Killian Jones’ life from the poison used by the enemy takes them to places even beyond the known world.
On AO3 (follow this link to get there!)
David pulls the map from the tree, holding it between his hands, and the rest of them crowd around him to look over his shoulder at it — except Emma, who keeps her distance. She doesn’t know if it’s from what happened in the Echo Caves or from finding half of their crew taken again, but she feels sick to her stomach, and taking slow, deep breaths is less than helpful in the thick, humid air of the Neverland forests.
But she is still close enough to hear their conversation:
"Now, correct me if I'm wrong, Killian, but isn't that—" David says, only to be cut off prematurely by Killian.
"The Dark Jungle? Aye."
Mary Margaret tries next: "And that's where you told us—"
"Never to go? Uh-huh," he says bluntly.
"But this map is leading us—” Robin tries, but this time, David cuts him off.
"Directly into the middle of it."
“And we’re walking right into his trap?” Mary Margaret asks.
“I don’t really see another option, do you?” David asks, and Emma turns to them just in time to see Mary Margaret reach out and take David’s hand, sharing a small but obviously love-filled glance with him. Though she has seen it many times before, has been watching her two best friends share displays of affection for years now, this simple gesture makes her stomach turn again.
She didn’t know she was such a cynic. Sure, she’s been having sinking feelings about the validity of true love and things like that, but she never once imagined actually saying those things out loud.
To Killian. To a dying man who pretty much confessed his love to her.
But she did. She didn’t even know she felt that strongly about it until she was already spewing her secret in the Cave, but once the words were out, there was no way of taking them back. Maybe that was Pan’s plan all along, to cause a rift between just her and Killian, because it doesn’t seem to her like anyone else was as affected by the Echo Caves as they were.
Milah clears her throat, and they all seem to remember simultaneously that she is there. As the rest of the group turns towards her, Emma focuses on Killian, watching his face change as he looks at her. A rollercoaster of emotions crosses his face, his features softening before hardening again, as if remembering everything she told them in the Caves. “I’ve spent a lot of time on this island, and have learned some of the ways around. This map is sending you right through Pan’s camp, where all of his henchmen stay. It’s almost definitely a trap.”
With that, his features soften again. “How long have you been here?”
“Not long after Liam was killed and I thought they killed you. Pan offered me a life away from the War, and since that was all I ever wanted, I accepted before realizing it was a trap to keep me here.”
“That’s twelve years, Milah,” he whispers, and something in the way he says her name makes Emma’s heart stop — or so it feels like. Every inch of her is weighed down by it, by the incredible familiarity that every inch of him exudes. Milah hurt him so much, Emma could tell by his response to her in the Cave. She hurt him, yet he still seems to have feelings for her.
That’s what she wants, she realizes, standing there taking it all in. She knows she crossed a line, completely disregarded Killian’s feelings, and she wants to be forgiven. She wants to go back to how it was before they went into the damned Cave, before Pan pitted them against each other.
She only hopes it’s not too late.
“And how do we know that whatever way you take us isn’t also going to be a trap?” David asks, and Emma is glad that someone else feels a little leery trusting the woman who just revealed herself to be the mother of Prince Baelfire.
“I have no way of proving my allegiance to you,” she says. “Only that I have spent my time here — twelve years, if Killian is right, though it only feels like a few months — as Pan’s prisoner, and though time may flow differently here than in the regular places of the world, I have grown to hate him more with each day I have spent here. If I could do anything to get off this island, I will, but if defeating him is something that could happen in the process of that, I'll do whatever I can to help.”
David turns to Killian, who just shrugs. “What do you suggest we do?”
“It’s a bit of a more treacherous path, to be honest, but doesn’t cut through Pan’s camp. Hopefully we’ll run into less Lost Boys that way.”
“Lost Boys?” Mary Margaret asks.
Milah nods. “That’s what they call themselves. Or what Pan calls them, I’m not sure who started it. I’ve always felt that they were trapped on this island like I am, but I have no way of proving it. All the ones I’ve been able to talk to seem pretty content to be here.”
They stay silent for a moment, shifting their packs on their backs, until finally, Killian says, “Well, let’s go, we’re wasting daylight,” before gesturing for Milah to take the lead and following behind her.
Robin and Mary Margaret take off after them, but Emma pulls David back, keeping a few steps behind them all and out of earshot.
“Do you really trust this woman?”
“No,” he says, keeping his gaze on the woods in front of them. “But the way I see it, I don’t really have another choice, do I?”
Emma shrugs. “I just… have a bad feeling about all of this,” she says, pulling down her ponytail to put it back up and keep the flyaways out of her face as best she can. She's never been to a place as humid as Neverland, and while she was never one to give much care to the state of her hair, she has been finding it much harder to deal with over the last few days.
“So do I,” he says. “I’ve had a bad feeling about all of this, since that first day when you called me from the hospital. But if listening to this woman — to Prince Baelfire’s mother — is the best chance we have for saving Killian’s life, then who am I to fight it?”
“You do have a pretty good track record for trusting those you probably shouldn’t,” she jokes, knocking her shoulder into his.
He chuckles. “That I do.”
"And who do we have here?" King George leers, glaring down at her from his throne. For the first time since he sat down beside his father earlier that morning, David feels pulled to look up.
He had no idea what to expect, but a girl no more than twelve or thirteen, kneeling on the marble-tiled floor between two armor-clad guards, is certainly not it, though that's what he finds. Though each of their hands extend far past the end of the girl's shoulders, they seem to be pushing her into the ground much harder than David feels is necessary.
She says nothing, only spits on the floor in front of her. He doesn't blame her, really; just by the looks of her, he can tell that her life has been nothing like his own, that she has spent most of her life living on the streets.
The streets of his kingdom. Or, what will be his kingdom one day. He’s thought about the people who are lesser off than he is, thought about those who don’t live the kind of privileged life that’s been handed to him — but, somehow, these thoughts have never included the idea that people his age could be living on the streets.
Right here, with this girl right in front of him, it hits him a little too hard in the face. A tremor quakes through his body.
“Tell me your name, girl,” his father demands, but all she does is glare at him — at them, together on the throne.
“We found her in the royal gardens, your majesty. Trying to steal food,” one of the guards says, his gloved hand flexing against her shoulder as it keeps her on her knees.
“Stealing from me, eh? Do you know what the punishment for that is?”
“Father, you can’t,” David says, surprising himself more than anyone else.
This time, King George’s glare is directed at him. “Excuse me?”
David clears his throat, gulps, trying to hide his embarrassment, his nervousness. “The least you could do is cut her a break. She doesn’t deserve to go to the dungeon.”
“She stole from me, David. From us, from the royal garden. The penalty is a night in the dungeon, no matter who you are.”
“Just look at her.”
King George turns away from his son to look back at the girl kneeling on the floor in front of them. For a moment, he is silent, his arms crossed over his chest, before turning back to David. “Okay, fine. What would you do, son?”
David sits up a little straighter, running his fingers through his hair, if only to try to get ahold of himself. “The first thing I would do would be to offer her a meal.” Though King George’s eyes are on David, the prince is watching the young girl, who looks up at him when he says this. “She’s obviously hungry, or she wouldn’t be stealing from the royal gardens. Gods know we have more than enough food.”
King George nods, looking back at the girl for a moment. “And then?”
“Why take any more action? There was no malicious intent. It’s our job to take care of our people, not throw the hungry ones in prison.”
King George smiles at his son, and for a moment, he feels hope. Maybe, just maybe, his father will see the truth in what he is saying, will be fair for the first time in his life.
But then he stands up, wiping his hands on his black dress pants. “And that’s why you’re not king yet.” He turns to the guards. “Take her to the dungeons. And give her a piece of bread or something, I suppose.”
Before David can say a word, King George turns on his heel and walks out of the throne room. As the girl is hauled back to her feet, David tries his best to give her a look filled with sympathy, but he has no idea if she took it that way.
One day, he’s going to be a benevolent king. One day, none of his people will go hungry, and they will certainly not be sent to the dungeons just for trying to get a bite to eat. For now, though, maybe all he can do is be nice to this one, single young woman. It really is the least he can do.
He waits until he is no longer under the watchful supervision of his father, until he has finished the rest of his duties for the day, but then he makes his way down to the kitchens.
“Hey, Granny,” he says, knocking on the door to the kitchen, though it already stands open. He knows the woman has another name, must have been told of it at some point, but everyone just calls her Granny — except his father, who refers to her only as “the cook,” even to her face. In reality, though, she is much more than that. Though she does not technically run their household, she does most of the work related to it, from running the kitchens to making sure the maids and servants do their jobs as they should. David knows the household would fall apart without her, and therefore always offers her a smile when he finds himself down in the kitchens, or when he runs into her in other parts of the palace.
“Good evening, your highness,” she says, turning her attention to him for only a moment before turning her attention back to the pot in front of her on the stove. As always, she is stoic, unsmiling, but he has learned that is just how she is, and not to take offense of it, even when the rest of their staff always manage a smile in his direction — and a fake one when his father is around.
It’s no secret that the household staff prefer the prince over his father. Sometimes they even whisper amongst themselves about how someone as rude as King George could have raised a son like David, who has grown into a polite and understanding young man.
“What brings you down here this evening?”
“My father threw a young woman in the dungeons earlier for stealing from the palace gardens, and I would like to make sure she gets a nice, hot meal.”
This pulls one of the very rare smiles across Granny’s face as she puts down her spoon and wipes her hands on her apron. “Gods bless you, sire.”
“It really is the least I could do,” he says, leaning back against the doorway, his eyes watching the old woman puttering around the room but the rest of him unmoving. “I tried to talk my father into letting her go — all she wanted was a meal — but he threw her in the dungeons nonetheless.”
“I was a little girl when your grandfather was king,” she says, adding a few pieces of bread to the tray. “And have lived most of my life in this palace, seeing firsthand how the citizens of the Gale have been treated.” When she turns to look at the prince, his eyes have fallen to the floor, so she takes the tray in her hands and stands before him with it, waiting for him to look up at her. “I’ve been waiting for a ruler like you my whole life, your highness. I only hope that I shall live to see you take your father’s place on the throne.”
He smiles at the woman, taking the tray of food out of her hands. “The rumor around here is that you’re never going to die,” he says with a wink, then turns and leaves the kitchen, another small smile spreading across the old woman’s face as she shakes her head.
He’s happy to see that the guards placed her in the first cell, the one that gets the most light during the day through the old iron gate at the top of the stairs. She is sitting alone in the corner, as far from the door as she can get, and her eyes follow him in what’s left of the light as he walks the few paces down the hallway to reach the door of her cell.
Neither of them speak, even as he sets the tray of food down on the ground and pushes it through the slot at the bottom of the cell. He stands there awkwardly for a moment, running his index finger along one of the cold iron bars, but then he sits down on the floor, his back against the bars, facing away from her. He wasn’t planning on staying, certainly wasn’t planning on making conversation with her, but there are words coming from his mouth before he can stop them. “My father is an unjust ruler, but there’s not much I can do about it for now. All I can do is go behind his back and try to be the kind of king I want to be someday when he’s not looking. Today was the first time he even asked for my opinion on something, but certainly not the first time I’ve spoken out to him about it, though you saw how he responded to it.” He doesn’t dare to turn his head towards her, but out of the corner of his eye, he notices that she’s slowly moving towards the tray of food, taking the sandwich off the tray. “I’m sorry for the way my father treated you today. I would really — I would like to help you, if you’ll let me.”
Her voice is soft, but still the fact that she speaks startles David a bit. “You have helped me already.”
David smiles, fully turning to her and happy to see she has accepted the food he brought as she takes a bite of the sandwich. “I mean once you’re out from behind these bars.”
“What do you think you could do for me?” There is spite in her voice again, spite that must come from years of being on her own and learning not to trust anyone, David realizes, but does not want to push her to the point where she thinks he is overdoing it.
He turns away from her again, hoping to keep her trust. “If you’ll allow me — and if you would like — I can try to get you a job working for someone at the palace. I could at least promise you a meal or two a day, though I may also be able to find you a place to stay, depending on what you would be willing to do.”
For a while, she is silent, slowly eating the sandwich before she begins picking at the pile of grapes. “What would I have to do to have a place to stay?” Her voice is small, showing David a side of her that he doesn’t think very many people get to see, a vulnerability that he can tell she has learned to hide under a thick skin.
“Have you discovered any powers yet?” He’s not sure how old she is, if he has become of age for her abilities to begin to show themselves.
“No, not — not yet.”
“And what about your parents? Did they have powers?”
“I… never knew my parents. I was left on the steps of one of the temples when I was just a few days old.”
He’s quiet for another few moments, thinking about it all. “I think the palace healers are searching for an apprentice, actually. I’ll go check with them this evening and come back in the morning to free you and see what I’ve come up with.”
He stands to leave, not expecting anything else from her, so when he hears a very quiet “thank you” come from behind him, he can’t stop himself from turning back towards her, though he has nothing to say.
“Why did you help me?” she asks, and he backtracks the three steps he’s taken away from her cell.
“I would like to be the kind of leader who helps as many people as I can, and it’s never too early to start.”
“You’re a good man, your highness.”
“David. Please, just call me David.” He wants to ask the question that’s sitting on the tip of his tongue, but he’s also afraid to; he knows that sometimes orphans are left without a name, but he feels a deep calling to befriend this small, blonde girl currently sitting in his father’s dungeons. So he asks it anyway: “Would you like to tell me your name?”
They share a smile. In this moment, Emma decides on a surname for the first time in her life. “Emma. Emma Swan. And thank you… David.”
“Can we stop for a minute?” Mary Margaret asks, leaning against a tree right off the path. “Please?”
None of them refuse. Killian even looks a little relieved, though he tries to hide his face from them as he digs through his pack, searching for snacks. Most of them dive straight into their supplies, searching for something, since Emma hasn’t yet honed the ability to conjure food like Belle and Merlin have — though, thankfully, most of them still have a fair amount of the food they packed in the first place because of the powers of their more magic-inclined friends.
Water, however, she is more than able to conjure, filling everyone’s canteens and bottles as they pass them to her — even with Milah insisting that the water on the island is more than safe.
"We don't want to take any unnecessary chances," David explains, handing Mary Margaret her bottle back. "Especially since we are no longer following the map Pan gave us. Who knows what kind of tricks he still has for us."
Killian, though he doesn’t seem to be listening to their conversation, has pulled the map out of his back pocket and has spread it across his legs, his attention on it instead the rest of the group. But his mind is very, very far away, the same place it has been for the last few hours, save when he has needed to point out something along the trail.
He's torn. Torn between the choices lying before him, and torn apart by everything that has been thrown at him recently. He never imagined he would see Milah again, especially never imagined that he would have to choose between two women with Milah being one of them. Part of him — most of him, if he’s honest with himself — doesn’t know if he can even trust her, knowing what he learned in the Cave. The mother of the man that has become his enemy, the man who killed his brother and tortured him.
And then there’s Emma. Days ago, even hours ago, he thought he was in love with her. His only question was whether or not he was going to make it off this island, whether he would have the chance to spend some of his life beside her.
But now he knows their connection is fake — or, Emma believes it’s fake. Killian realizes, looking across the path to where she is sitting against a tree, her eyes shut, that, to him, it doesn’t even matter. Magic or not, prophecy or not, he’s in love with her.
Turning to Milah, he finds himself surprised by his lack of feeling for her, even as she smiles warmly at him. A smile that he has missed so much over the last twelve years, a smile he never thought he would see again. Still, he feels nothing. Not even hatred, not anger — just… nothing.
Well, there’s his decision then. He’s not sure that he will ever get past Emma’s disdain towards their connection, but he at least knows that she is the one he chooses.
If he makes it off this island.
A twig snaps behind David, bringing up the rear of the group, and he cannot quite move fast enough to simultaneously whip around and pull his pistol from the waistband of his jeans, calling for Emma's attention. At the last moment, he watches as the young boy that has appeared behind him knocks an arrow on his obviously-homemade bow, and he readies himself for the impact of the crude arrow into his flesh, his finger unable to pull the trigger with an enemy who looks so young.
But the impact never comes. When he opens his eyes, Emma is standing in front of him, her hands out before her — and the hazy waves emitting from them are holding the arrow, mid-flight, in the air between them.
Suddenly, a battle cry sounds in the forest around them, other young boys armed with spears and arrows (and David even thinks he sees a slingshot) appear from behind the trees.
Their group stands unmoving, though their weapons are drawn, as the boys start to move around them, none of them able to bring themselves to fire their weapons at an enemy that looks so much like young boys.
"They're enchanted, I told you this!" Milah cries, the only one of them unarmed, and she tries to cower behind Robin, who is having none of it. "They look like boys, but they're not!"
Another one, this one significantly taller and older-looking, pushes through the trees, the smile on his face somehow calling attention to the large scar that runs down his cheek. "And I can assure you that nothing will hold us back from killing you."
This is apparently the push Robin needs to act, and he releases an arrow at one of the closest of Pan's followers, catching the arm of his jacket and pinning it against the tree. He and Mary Margaret continue with this approach, successfully taking four of the boys out of battle, but it's almost as if they're immediately replaced with four more.
And each of them are looking towards the tall boy with the scar for their orders.
When Emma realizes this, she focuses all of her energy on him, though it takes all of the concentration she has to try to hold him still, her powers in battle still very new to her.
They're still afraid to act, even as the boys begin loosing arrows in their direction. When Emma realizes that freezing their leader isn't helping, she releases him, trying to find somewhere better to focus her powers — and she finds it in a protective barrier around them, stopping many of the boys' arrows.
But not all of them. Just as Emma begins to feel more confident in her abilities, she senses something came through anyway, and it almost breaks her concentration to turn her head for a moment in the direction she thought she felt it.
She wishes she hadn't, though, because all she finds is Robin laying on the ground, the twig-end of one of the boy's crude arrows sticking out of the flesh of his thigh.
"I can help!" she says, but the rest of the group seems to shout No! at the same time, and Milah kneels beside him.
“Can’t you do something… more?” David asks, and Emma rolls her eyes.
“I’m doing the best I can here.”
“You’re doing great, love,” Killian mutters from beside her, bumping his shoulder into hers, then fires a shot at one of the boys, the first shot fired from any of their pistols. It just hits the side of the boy's leg, and he falls to the ground gripping it — but the rest of the boy's stop in their tracks, eyes wide and directed at Killian.
Silence has fallen around them.
"What is that?" the oldest of them, the one with the scar, asks, staring at the pistol in Killian's hand.
It never occurred to them that the Lost Boys haven't seen newer, updated weapons. It never occurred to most of them that Pan would have boys on the island who can't age, who have been stuck here for gods know how long.
"It's a pistol, you dunce," another of them says, aiming his bow once more —
— and, somehow, Emma is overcome by a surge of power, emitted from her hands in a blinding flash of white light, sending all of the Lost Boys flying backwards and knocking many of them unconscious.
"Bloody brilliant, love," Killian mumbles, knocking against her shoulder again as he returns his pistol to the holster.
Emma whips around, first towards Robin before realizing that David has also come out of the battle wounded.
"Alright," she says, helping David sit against a tree, her hand pressed against the scrape on the side of his ribs. "Am I allowed to help now?"
She tries to smile at David, but it doesn't really take — and David certainly doesn't return it.
Because when she lifts his shirt, the gash on his ribs has already started turning black. She glances over her shoulder, searching for him, but she knows he is seeing the same that she is.
"Dreamshade," Killian mumbles, kneeling beside her on the ground. "What bloody luck."

The car journey back to the palace was silent, Bastien didn't dare to even glance at the king in rear view mirror. As soon as they pulled up outside the front doors Liam exited the car and walked off towards the gardens without saying a word. Now he had done his job and safely delivered the king back to the palace, Bastien returned to his office in the basement, silently cursing love and everything it stands for.
Liam crosses the perfectly manicured palace lawns and enters the hedge maze. Slowly he makes his way to the centre where he sits on the swing hanging from the lone tree that stands in the middle. He lowers his head into his hands and finally allows himself to break down. Bitterness and bile rise up into his mouth as he sobs, he realises he has no reason to swallow it down anymore. His sunshine, the one who lit him from the inside is gone, where once he used to feel a frisson of love if his thoughts even turned her way for a moment, he now feels desolate. The image of her face that once conjured his smile no matter where he was or what he was doing, now causes a pain in his chest so great he wonders how his heart is still even beating without her. He would have given her whatever she asked of him, he would have done anything for her. Now his world has become blacker than it ever was before, darker for her absence. Loneliness cripples his every thought and as those thoughts of her enslave him, his lungs struggle for breath against ribs that feel like they’re made of stone. His father had told him his heart was too soft, Liam had vehemently disagreed and argued that she made him strong and vibrant, as tears drip from his stubbled chin he shakes his head at the memory, what a fool he was for not listening, for now his heart is broken beyond repair.
He sits there for a long time pressing the base of his thumbs into his eyes to stop the tears flowing. Eventually he rises and makes his way to his quarters. He enters the door and crosses into the sitting room, Maxwell and Drake are already there waiting for him. One look at his red rimmed eyes and the despair etched on his face tells them the news that they have been waiting for.
“Shit.” Is all Drake manages to say. The three of them collapse down onto the plush grey couch in silence, staring at the ceiling, no one knowing what to say, all drowning in their own separate heartache.

Bastien’s lips curl up as he listens to the gate guard speak on the radio. “I’m on my way” is all he says in response. He rises from his desk and slings his discarded suit jacket back over his shoulders pushing his arms into the sleeves. He grabs the keys for a crown vehicle from the lock box on the wall, not noticing or caring what one he’s randomly chosen and makes his way to the garage. He drives slowly down the long driveway and pulls to a stop at the gate house, rolling the window down he calls out to the unexpected guest waiting for him. “Get in.” Is all he tells them. Silently they drive back up to the front doors of the palace where he pulls up and exits the vehicle, abandoning it at the front steps. Together they make their way up to the King’s quarters. Bastien knocks firmly on the door and awaits a command.
All three men ignore the hard firm knock on the front door. A few seconds later another firm knock sounds, finally Liam sighs and reluctantly peels himself up off the couch to go and open it, ready to tell the unwelcome guest to go to hell. He swings the door open and finds those sapphire blue eyes that he never thought he’d see again staring at him. He blinks his own eyes hoping his raw grief hasn't conjured up a mirage.
“Hey.” she says nervously.
“Riley!” Is all he can manage to say before she rushes into his arms, pressing herself against his strong firm chest.
“I couldn't do it Liam, I couldn't leave you.” She sobs into his chest.
“Oh my god I thought I’d never see you again.” He says into her hair, holding her tightly against him.
“I don't want to be apart from you, I love you, please forgive me.” She cries, her words muffled against him.
“Of course I forgive you. But does this mean you're here to stay.” He takes hold of her face in both hands and looks deep into her eyes. “Because life without you is meaningless, my heart couldn't take this again Riley, I need to know that you're back for good this time.”
Instead of answering, Riley reaches for him, putting her small, warm hands on the back of his neck. The aching anticipation for his kiss is suddenly too much and she pulls herself up on tip toes and pulls his mouth down to hers. He kisses her gently, carefully, his lips caressing hers. He kisses her cheeks, her forehead, her nose, then traces the line of her cheek with his fingertip, a dreamlike intensity in his gaze as he stares into her eyes. Finally he moves to kiss her lips once again, first lightly, then more urgently, sliding his tongue into her mouth as the intensity increases. Her hips tilt against his, her breasts press against his chest, her whole body sending a message that’s undeniable. He pulls her hard against him, thinking that he'd never get her close enough, that he'd keep her warm, he'd keep her safe, he'd keep her with him, always.
As their kiss heats up they stumble blindly into the sitting room, Maxwell and Drake jump up from the couch in surprise.
“Taylor.” Drake gasps. “You’re back.”
“Oh my God Little Blossom, you scared us half to death leaving like that.” Maxwell exclaims.
Neither Liam or Riley break their kiss, neither wanting to let the other one go.
“Umm guys we are still here.” Maxwell cautiously states, hoping one of them will hear him above their racing heartbeats.
With their lips locked Liam leads Riley blindly backwards towards his room, his hands tangled in her hair. He gropes behind him for the door handle and as it opens they stumble through, Liam kicks it closed with his foot.
“Fuck.” Drake announces, wide eyed. “What the hell just happened?” He asks Maxwell.
“Um I think she’s back, and I think we had better leave.” Maxwell responds. “Before we hear things we can never un-hear.”
Alone in Liam’s bedroom they stand halfway between the bed and the door. Liam finally breaks their kiss and smooths his hands down the length of her hair as he gazes into her eyes, his expression is tender and full of longing. “Are you sure?” He whispers into her ear. He can feel her nodding her head against him in reply.
“I’ve never been more sure.” She responds.
His fingers trail down her cheek to her lips, outlining the shape of her mouth. He bends down, lowering his lips against her cheek, brushing it lightly. Shivers run through her whole body, making her tremble. He brushes his mouth against the hollow of her temple then traces the line of her jawbone.
“You’re shaking,” Liam says against her lips. “I’m here, it’s me.” He whispers. “You don’t have to be afraid.”
She shudders as he kisses along her jawline to her ear, nipping at her earlobe. Over the pulse point in her neck he presses a long, languid kiss. The heat from his mouth sears her all the way down her spine. His kisses are neither tentative nor hurried. As he kisses her, her muscles slacken, her skin flushes with heat and her worry fades. For the first time in weeks, she feels human. Riley aches for him, it has been so long since she’s been touched intimately. So long since she’s wanted to be.
“It’s ok. I’m ok.” She assures him. She feels as if she can’t get close enough to him, she strains against his body, against the press of his broad chest, the solid muscles rippling beneath his shirt. With his tongue dancing in her mouth he walks her slowly to his bed and as their knees knock against it they both gently fall onto it. As he kisses her his fingers gently touch her jaw and slither down, softly tracing the contours of her neck until he reaches the top of her tank top. Riley’s eyes close as she drowns in the pleasure of his touch. He pulls his mouth away and his thumb sweeps gingerly across her bottom lip. Her lips part, catching his thumb in her mouth, she sucks on it. A soft moan comes from his throat, making the yearning burn deeper in her body. Her eyes flutter open to see him staring down at her. For a brief time they stay like that, lost in everything they’ve left unsaid.
“We don't have to do anything if you don't feel comfortable.” Liam tells her gently as thoughts of kissing his way up her from her leg to her beautiful mouth invaded his mind. “You being here with me is enough, I don't want to rush you.”
Every inch of Riley’s skin prickles with craving. “There’s nothing in the world I want more.” She tells him looking deep into his eyes. “I’m ready. I want to.”
He looks at her right in the eyes and slowly slides both hands across her shoulders, slipping them underneath the straps of her top – then pulling them down gently, making her gasp. Every touch feels like fire, she kisses him again and the taste of his lips spurs a divine hunger, a craving that’s an insatiable endless need for him. She can’t believe she ever thought she could survive without him.
His kisses are tender as he slides his lips down her neck, flutters them onto her chest and clamps them onto her nipples, which he takes in his mouth one by one, teasing them with his teeth. Then with his tongue still swirling around her left nipple, he looks up at her with a questioning glint in his eye. Her soft moan provides his answer and he grips the bottom of her top and slides it up carefully over her head, tossing it on his bedroom floor. His mouth finds her nipple again using his hands to push more of her breast into his mouth. Riley groans, bucking her hips and clutching handfuls of his thick blonde hair as he devours the delicate skin, darting his tongue over the bud.
He reaches down and unzips her jeans, keeping eye contact the whole while, his eyes questioning her once again, she nods before he pulls them down over her legs. He takes off his shirt and Riley feels another wave of desire as she stares at his tanned, muscular chest, hard above his bulging jeans. She’s nearly naked before him and his mind’s a blur, captivated by her beauty. He swirls his fingertips across her erect nipples. A soft moan escapes her lips. She trembles with excitement and bites her lip as his warm breath touches that spot on her neck. He stops kissing her and stares deep into her eyes, his breathing fast and ragged. Then, he's leaning over her, moving the material of her lace panties aside, with expert fingers he dips into her, stroking her clit with a firm thumb while his fingers seem to fill every inch of her. He presses his lips onto hers with a savage hunger. Riley feels dizzy with her need for him, his free hand locks onto the back of her head as she pulls him by his belt loops closer to her. Every bit of him is hard and strong against her as she struggles to get even closer to him.
Liam fights hard to restrain himself, he’s still dressed from the waist down while Riley’s naked, ready and waiting, he can feel his own throbbing need straining against the crotch of his jeans. His mouth works its way down her neck, shoulders, chest and stomach until eventually his tongue flickers inside her, stroking, kissing and licking while his hands grip her legs and she writhes underneath him, gasping in pleasure. Riley clutches hard fistfuls of his hair, arching her back against his bedsheets, pressing her hips up to meet his mouth. She whimpers his name as his tongue slithers back and forth over her throbbing clit. As his fingers push up inside her, she gives up trying to find words and throws her head back as the orgasm explodes inside her, tearing primal sounds from her throat. Pleasure arcs over her body like forks of lightning. He sucks her clit again, eating up the sounds of pleasure and wetness she makes as she rides her climax.
Liam kisses his way back up her sweat moistened body to her lips. Riley pushes on his shoulders so Liam lays flat on his back, she moves on top of him and buries her face in the crook of his neck, leaving wet opened mouth kisses on his hot skin. She can’t taste enough of his skin, dragging the flat of her tongue along the side of his neck and down his hard pecks as her fingertips trace the line of his abs, unbuttoning and unzipping his fly, pushing his jeans and boxers down his legs, releasing his hard length. Her tongue flicks at the tip teasingly, and then along the underside. Liam’s body arches up, his groans encouraging her. She takes the full length of him into her mouth, and begins to suck and swirl her tongue against him. “Riley stop, I’m gonna come baby if you don’t.” He tells her, she looks up at him with a glint in her eyes, hollowing her cheeks she pulls him deeper into her throat. ‘Fuck.’ he exclaims winding his fingers into her hair. He comes quickly, moaning quietly, spilling into her mouth in torrents. She swallows what he gives her greedily. When he’s finished, she crawls up his body, straddling him and kissing him with an intense passion.
For what feels like forever they writhe and kiss, their legs intertwining, pressing blazing flesh to smouldering skin, as if they can’t find quite enough of the contact they crave. It doesn't take Liam long to harden again and he gently pushes her over onto her back. He takes a condom from inside his nightstand and tears it open, rolling it on his hard shaft. He enters her gently, filling her up in one smooth movement. “Oh God.” Riley gasps, as she raises her knees trying to take him deeper still inside her. He props himself up to watch himself sinking into her. Riley struggles to catch her breath as the first waves of orgasm build – then crash over her again and again as Liam rocks his hips back and forth, slowly at first, then harder, faster, desperate. He buries his face in her neck, pounding hard. A few moments later, she watches him as his face contorts, desperately containing his cries as he comes. He bucks against her, and she can't stop another orgasm overwhelming her. They both shudder and gasp as the waves gradually subside, delicious ripples flowing through their entire bodies. As their breathing slows, they stare at each other like they can't quite believe what they nearly came so close to losing.
Sprawled on top of the rumpled sheets Liam pulls her into him, one arm tight around her waist, the other across her bare chest, holding her back firmly to his chest.
“Promise me you won’t ever leave me Riley.” He pleads. “I love you, I don't ever want to lose you again.”
“I promise.” She assures him.
Loosening one arm from his tight hold on her, he rolls over behind him to his nightstand and takes a small black velvet box from the drawer. He flips it open and holds it out in front of her.
“Marry me Riley, say you’ll be with me forever.”
She turns around in his arms to face him and places a soft kiss on his lips.
“Yes. A thousand times yes.” she smiles as tears roll down her cheeks.
