Chapter 1: A Lying Witch and Your Warden
Luzura awoke bright and early like she normally would, especially for a day like this. Although, she was beginning to regret staying up so late the night before.
She had to go down into town today, gathering foods from the market. The emperor had enlisted her to accompany the guards to keep them on track, due to a few...mishaps over the past few times. What those "mishaps" were, She might never know the answer to.
Luzura kept in mind to be wary around the common folk. She had been told many times how dangerous it it outside the castle.
"You're rich and you're of status. People will want more than just your money." Her father always said. So, she was never permitted to leave, at least not without an escort. How she wished she could explore, though.
She rode in the carriage, her Good Witch Azura book sitting next to her, waiting patiently for the guards to let her know what they needed.
Suddenly, a wheel had dipped into a rather large pothole, causing the whole carriage to tilt sideways. Luzura was jolted about, but ultimately fine...
Until she realized her book had flewn out in the process.
She gasped, looking out the window to see her book being kicked around by the oblivious crowd, eventually disappearing.
"Oh no. Nononononono!" She leapt put of the carriage without a thought and ran into the streets to find her book.
Luzura was pushed, bumped into and shoved around in the crowd, practically being spit out behind a few shop tents.
She heard a woman's voice on the other side.
"Finally, you're back! Now let's see what we've got here..." the woman was tall, with a HUGE head of gray hair- like seriously huge-, wearing a red sleeveless dress with a green bandana around her head. The owl flew around her head, before landing on the tip of her staff and transforming into a wooden sculpture.
Next to the woman was a giant sack filled with things, she began to pull stuff out one by one.
"Garbage." When she pulled out a strange rectangle.
"Garbage." When she pulled out a ring with a massive gem on it.
"Garbage." When she pulled out a grail with a golden, almost heavenly glow to it.
Suddenly, the gray-haired woman gasped, pulling out a pair of strange looking glasses, which had false eyes that popped out with springs.
"This ought to make me rich!", Luzura could see her face more clearly now, the woman was old, possibly in her forties, with golden eyes and a gold tooth sticking out.
"And this..." the woman picked out a Good Witch Azura book. Luzura's! That owl must've picked it up in the crowd!
She placed the book over a lit candle, "Eh, this'll make good kindling."
Luzura gasped, rushed towards her, and snatched her book back.
"Sosorrythatsminethankyou." She said all in one breath.
She rushed back towards the end of the tent, being surprised when she saw a mysterious door on the left side, leading to a different grassy area. Suddenly the doorway folded up and disappeared, the big-haired woman holding a glowing key to it.
"You're not going anywhere." She said, taking off the gag glasses.
Luzura yelped, resuming her normal route, underneath the tent wall, and out into the rest of the market.
She barely turned before abruptly stopping, seeing that she was approaching a cliff. But, she was also taken by the sights of the Boiling Isles.
Rows of houses, shops, creatures, and people filled up the land. The giant ribs of the Titan responsible for the town's name. She had never seen this part of the Isles before. But, she soon snapped from her trance.
A tiny pink fairy fluttered next to her. "Oh, hello, little one. Could you tell me how I can get out of here?"
"GIVE ME YOUR SKIN!"
In response, Luzura screamed, and quickly slapped the pest to the ground.
"Oh, oh no. Oh Titan, where am I? Father will be so furious..." she mumbled.
A hand gripped her shoulder, holding her tightly. "You've got a lot of nerve, kid..."
The lady, dragged her back to her shop, plopping her down onto a stool. Luzura curled up in fear.
"I-Im so sorry- I just wanted my book! If you're gonna rob me, eat me, or peel my skin off- just do it!" She panicked.
"Eat you? Now why would I eat a potential customer?"
The woman's demeanor suddenly changed, she seemed more friendly, and began showcasing the items in her shop of..."Human Collectables"?
"Can I offer you a human foot filled with holes? Or maybe some green human candy? Or maybe this magic shadow box that reflects only sadness?" She shoved a box in Luzura's face, her reflection looking back at her.
Her hair had become a mess in all the chaos, so she took the opportunity to fix it up, brushing it down and tucking it behind her pointed ears.
She vaguely remembered something about this box, so she decided to try something out.
"I think I've read about these, may I see it?" She asked, the lady handing it to her.
The woman watched as Luzura handled the object, popping the back bottom open. She looked into a small dish with a sign in front of it labeled "Human Candy", in it two cylindrical objects lay.
Though they were said to be candy, a feeling in Luzura's gut said that it would be a bad idea to eat them, so she just pushed them into the compartment, closing it, and fiddling with the dial.
The dial hit a frequency where the screen showed a person dancing in a strange outfit to music in the background.
Civilians turned their heads, allured by the sound.
"I'll give you 40 snails for the screaming box!" One said.
"I'll give you a hundred" another said.
"Can in eat the tiny person inside?" One asked.
Soon, an entire bid started up, people offering their snails left and right.
"Wow, I don't know what you did, but you did right kid." The woman said, grabbing snails by the handful.
"Thank you. But if you don't mind me asking, what's your name?"
"Well, if you must know..." She ripped the bandana off and hopped onto the table, "I am Eda the Owl Lady! The most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles!"
'Most powerful? That's a bit of an exaggeration compared to my father...' Luzura thought.
"I am respected! Feared!-"
"Busted."
A fist came down and smashed the box, causing the crowd to scatter, screaming their heads off.
A guard Luzura didn't recognize grabbed Eda's arm, holding up a wanted poster.
"Eda the Owl Lady, you are wanted for misuse of magic and demonic misdemeanors! I hearby order you to come with me to the conformatorium!" He tried to pull Eda away.
'A criminal?' Luzura thought, standing frozen.
"Would you guys quit following me around? I haven't done squat!" Eda slapped his arm away, which turned his attention to Luzura.
He grabbed her by the hood of her cloak, yanking her off of the ground.
"And you're coming to! For fraternizing with a criminal- W-Wait...Prince-?!" He stopped his sentence midway as Eda grabbed her staff and struck him with it, him letting go of Luzura and falling to the ground.
Eda activated her staff, somehow managing to pack her whole shop in the sack, along with the strange key. She slung the bag over her shoulder, and took off.
"Follow me, kid!"
Luzura picked up her book and obeyed, quickly realizing what choice she just made.
"T-This is crazy! If my father hears about this, he'll lose it!" She said, running close to Eda.
"I won't let anything happen to you. You're more valuable alive then dead." She responded. Unfortunately, that didn't make Luzura feel any better.
"Excuse me-?" Before she could protest, Eda hooked Luzura's arm in hers, and took flight on her owl staff, cheering all the while.
The guard from earlier had come to, stopping just where the two took off.
"Y-You won't get away with this, Owl Lady!"
A pause.
"Well, yeah, okay. She got away. She got away with it everybody!"
Luzura's eyes were screwed shut, tears rolling off as she flew through the air.
"You can open your eyes, kid."
She did, seeing the wide open plains, mountaintops, and wide array of creatures flying in the sky. A griffin flew next to them, it almost didn't seem real.
"Y'know, I never caught your name." Eda said.
Luzura jolted, waking up from her amazement.
"Oh! It's Luzura!" She said.
"Luzura? As in Princess Luzura? What the heck were you doing down there? Shouldn't you be in the castle having tea parties or whatever?"
"Well, I was in the market with some guards, and lost my book, then I saw you with it, and, well, you know the rest." Luzura said.
"Wow. Crazy how that just happens. At least you couldn't run into any giraffes."
"Giraffes?"
"Oh, yeah, we banished those freaks a long time ago. Titan, they were creepy."
They landed on the ground, Luzura sticking behind in shock, until she looked behind her and saw Eda's severed hand, still moving on the staff.
She jumped off, and Eda reattached it, nonchalantly.
Luzura got up, taking on just how far into the Isles she was.
"Wow, well this has been fun and all, but I'm really not supposed to be here... So, could you possibly help me back to the palace?" She asked Eda, who was readying the sack to be taken somewhere.
"Hm. Well, only if you help me first!" She snorted, walking off, "Now, come along, kid."
Luzura stood dazed. Is... she being held hostage? This woman didn't seem to want to hurt her, so maybe? Her own thoughts and what her father said filled her mind, arguing with each other.
She blocked them both out, looking to where Eda had walked off to.
A house, with a huge crumbling tower in the back, a large, circular, stained-glass window in the center, and the beauty of it tied it all together.
Luzura quickly caught up with Eda, turning her head towards the surrounding woodlands.
"Wait, what if the guards come for us?"
Eda snorted again. "Not to worry, my house has a state of the art defense system."
The owl symbol on the front door suddenly spoke in a high-pitched voice.
"Hoot hoot! Password, please" this was met with a poke in the eyes from Eda.
"We got no time for this, Hooty, let us in."
Wait, this thing is ALIVE?! Luzura didn't want to think of how that was possible.
The owl shook his head in pain, "Alright, geez! You never wanna have any fun! Ouch! Hoot!" Hooty widened his mouth, completely engulfing the regular door, which made Luzura question why it was there in the first place.
Once they were inside, Eda snapped her fingers as the house came to life.
Candles lit on their own, appliances moved without the aid of a person, and various weapons, and objects hung on the walls.
"Welcome to The Owl House! Where I hide away from the pressures of modern life." Eda said, "Also the cops.....and exes...."
Luzura tried to see everything at the same time, it was almost overwhelming.
"Wow, this is beautiful! And you live here?"
"Well, me and my roommate..."
The house began to shake as heavy stomps could be heard, Luzura began to panic, Eda remained unaffected.
"WHO DARES TO INTRUDE UPON I, THE KING OF DEMONS!" the big, booming voice shrank as a shadow grew closer to a doorway, soon revealing a small creature. The creature had a skull for a head, black fur, and he had towels wrapped around his head and waist, holding a rubber ducky in his claws.
Luzura gasped, her eyes growing as wide a saucers.
"¡Ay, que lindo!" She practically tackled the thing, cuddling it close in a hug.
"Eda, he's SO CUTE! Who's a wittle guy, huh? Who? Is it you?" She spoke in a babyish voice.
The creature's features could now be seen more, he had two horns, though one was snapped in half, and he wore a red collar with a tag on it.
He tried to squirm out of Luzura's grip, avoiding her hugs.
"AUGH! No! I don't know who your little guy is! Eda, who is this monster!?" He screamed.
"This is Luzura." Eda pulled her off of him, while she kept making attempts to grab him.
"The princess?!" The little skull creature shouted.
"Yes, so be civil. She's here to help us with out little situation."
"But, Eda, you're always saying that the royal family is nothing but a bunch of stuck-up-" Hooty chimed in, before Eda slapped her hand over his beak.
"Ohoho, Hooty, you gotta stop repeating things you hear from your shows, bud!" She attempted to laugh it off.
Luzura decided to ignore whatever Hooty was gonna say, and focused on Eda's earlier statement.
"What exactly is this 'situation' you mentioned?" She asked, skeptical.
Eda stepped back, conjuring a magic circle.
"Just let me explain."
The magic circle projected an image of a monster that looked a bit like the little skull creature, in an artstyle similar to some books Luzura read.
"King was once a mighty king of demons, until his powerful crown was stolen and he became.....that... and that crown is being held by Warden Wrath, and was locked away behind a force field that only a very powerful witch can break through. That's where you come in. Help us get that crown, and we'll get you back to the castle."
The magic circle disappeared, and Eda stretched her hand put to Luzura.
"So, whaddya say?"
"Wait, 'powerful witch'? I thought you said you the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles..."
Eda faltered, snorting.
"I tried it before! But apparently I wasn't "powerful enough". Tch, like Titan, I'm not... But, you're the princess, the royal family is the highest power there is, so it's gotta be you."
Luzura thought for a moment, and then shook her hand in agreement.
"Ok! I'm in."
"Excellent, bow we've got no time to lose." Eda said, scooping Luzura up over her shoulder, King following close behind.
"W-Where are we going?"
"Somewhere super fun!" Eda answered, tossing the princess back on the staff.
As they flew, Luzura took the time to do some sightseeing, a lot of things she had never seen before.
"Hey, by the way. What was that you said back there? 'Ay que...something'?" Eda asked.
"Oh! That's a type of human dialect called Spanish! I've been reading about human customs and life for a couple years now." Luzura answered cheerfully.
"Oh, so that's how you knew how that box worked!"
The three flew for a little bit longer before the sky started to darken, the clouds grew thick, lightning crashed every few seconds, and a giant building was laying at the center of the gorge.
"What is THAT!?" Luzura asked.
"The Conformatorium. A place for those who are considered "unsuitable" for society." Eda said.
Luzura backed away, spying a wanted poster of Eda and King.
"These guys are pretty obsessed with you, huh?"
"Right you are, Princess! But we've never been caught 'cause we're too slippery~."
King chimed in from atop od Luzura's head.
"Try to catch me when I'm covered in grease! I'm a squirmy little fella!" He jumped down, pointing to the top of the tower, "You and I will sneak up there where my crown is! "
"And I'll provide the distraction!" Eda said.
"Wait! I can't let anybody recognize me! If they tell my father, he'll flip!"
"What does that matter, you're the princess, aren't you here all the time?"
"No! I'm just now finding out about this! I'm not allowed outside without a guard. Even then, I'm forbidden to go anywhere outside of Boneborough!"
"Wait, wait, wait. Are you telling me that you're supposed to be the Empress of the ENTIRE Boiling Isles one day, but you're not allowed to go out and explore the isles?" Eda said.
"That's dumb." King said.
Now that they brought it up, it did seem redundant of her father. Although she thought she could see his side, the fact that Eda didn't want to harm her somewhat disproved it.
Nevertheless, Luzura reached into her pocket, grabbing a handkerchief and tying it around the bottom of her face, covering her nose and mouth.
"There. I'm ready."
Eda slammed her staff onto the ground, and a yellow glowing circle began lifting King and Luzura up to the window of the tower. Eda activated her staff, flying off.
"I'll meet you guys there!"
The pair climbed through, into the tower, the dark blue walls lined levels upon levels of cells, locked with iron bars.
"Hey you, how'd you get out of your cell?" A voice called from behind her.
A girl with a ponytail was locked in a cell behind her, her arms crossed.
"No, no, I'm not a criminal..." Luzura said.
"Not yet!" King joked.
"Well neither are we! Stupid warden likes to lock people up who don't fit in. I write fanfics about food falling in love! I like food, I like love, lemme write about it!"
"I'm here because I like eating my own eyes." The guy in the left cell said.
"We are agents of free expression! They will never side with us!" A creature whose body was mostly a nose yelled.
"Yeah, she's big on conspiracy theories..."
"The world is a simulation! We are all playthings for a higher being!"
How could a place like this exist? How horrible do you have to be to lock someone up because you don't like them?
"These are NOT crimes! You all didn't do anything wrong! You're all just...weirdos like me..." Luzura grew quiet.
Loud stomps faded in behind the door, growing louder by the second.
"It's Warden Wrath! Hide!"
Luzura panicked for a few seconds before dashing into an unlocked cell and closing the door.
The door burst open, a hulking person in a bird mask similar to the ones the guards wear, he was so big that the floor shook with every step he took.
"I can hear you..." His deep, booming voice said, "Just what are you fools whispering about?"
He looked down to the wanted poster that Luzura dropped.
"Ah...The Owl Lady..." His hang morphed into a mallet, and he slammed in against the bars of the cell Luzura was hiding in, "I'll get my hands on her soon enough."
Warden Wrath turned his head towards the inside, glimpsing at the cowering pair. Then, the tiny nose person started yelling.
"FIGHT AGAINST THE OPPRESSOR! WE WILL RESIST! WE WILL CONQUER! We will NEVER be afraid of you, you old creep!"
The warden pulled a lever, opening her cell.
"Hooray! I'm free!" She said. Suddenly the warden's hand wrapped around her.
He held her up, addressing the rest of the prisoners.
"Let this be a lesson to all of you. There's no place in society for you if you can't. Fit. In." He stomped through the door he came in, taking her with him.
Luzura left the cell, walking to another.
"Don't worry, I can get you out!" She attempted to pull the lever to free them, but it didn't move an inch.
"Nooo! My weak nerd arms!"
"Just get out while you still can, kid. Enjoy freedom for us..."
With nothing left to do, Luzura walked away, through a broken down hall, her and King staying quiet.
Eda flew in next to her on her staff.
"Hey, just checked and the warden's distracted. Torturing some little thing." She said, "Not coming around here anytime soon."
Luzura said nothing, walking towards a large door that read "Contraband". King jumped up, rushing towards the door.
"My crown! It's close! I can feel it!" He scratched at the door, gnawing at the handle.
"Aw, he's so cute when he's hungry for power." Eda cooed. Luzura sighed.
"It's not fair that they're all in here! They're just being themselves! Is that so wrong?"
Before Eda could say anything, the doorknob flew to the floor, King pushing the door open and going inside.
"C'mon, let's go before he hurts himself." Eda and Luzura followed him, hearing a small *zap* as King yelped.
The room was mostly empty, except for a large, circular force field in the center. King attempting to slam through it with his head.
Eda stopped him, "We have the princess, remember?"
Luzura took a deep breath, hoping for the best. She was the emperor's daughter after all, she would be as powerful as him.
She slowly stepped in, pushing through the field. It worked! Inside, piles upon piles of confiscated stuff, at the top of the tallest one, was a crown.
Luzura squinted, noticing something odd about it.
"Wait. Is that....?"
Cardboard. The crown was cardboard. Luzura stepped out holding it before King snatched it away, placing it on his head.
"Yes! Yes! I can feel my power returning! You there, nightmare critter! I shall call you François and you shall be a minion in my army of darkness! Mwahahaha!" King grabbed a stuffed animal.
"That crown doesn't give him powers, does it?" Luzura asked.
"Nope." Eda said. Luzura crossed her arms in frustration, she couldn't believe she did all of this for a paper crown.
Eda noticed, putting her hand on her shoulder.
"Look at us, Luzura, King and I only have each other in this world. So if that crown is important to him, it's important to me. Besides, us weirdos gotta stick together." She winked.
Luzura's face softened, Eda did have a point.
"Now let's get out of here before the warden finds us and loses his head." A hulking shadow loomed over her, fashioning a blade.
"Too late." The blade came down, slicing Eda's head clean off.
The head flew off and into Luzura's arms as she screamed her head off. Oh Titan! Oh poor Eda! Her dead eyes looked back at Luzura in horror.
Suddenly, they blinked.
"OW! Oh, I hate it when that happens...."
Luzura screamed again, nearly throwing the head. But she didn't, instead she held it close.
"Eda! Are you alright?!"
"Yeah, yeah. This just happens when you get older..."
"WHAT?! IT DOES?!"
The warden retreated his hand back to normal.
"Finally. I've got you cornered, Eda the Owl Lady." He stepped closer, taking the crown off of King's head.
"Weh?!"
"My guards could never catch you. But I knew if I took your pet's toy, you'd come running." He explained, Eda's headless body crawling around.
In one swift motion, he crushed the cardboard crown, King crying out.
"What do you want with me?! I've never actually broken any of your stupid laws! In front of you!" Eda yelled.
"I want you...."
Warden Wrath knelt down, holding a bouquet of flowers.
"To go out with me."
"Wha...."
"What?"
Two guards cheered him on from behind.
"You've always alluded our capture. You've always been the one that got away. I found that alluring..."
"I hate everything you're saying right now." Luzura said. Did he really think this was romantic?
"You stay out of this!" He yelled, snatching Luzura and holding her up in the air, catching Eda's head.
"So how about it, Owl Lady. The most powerful witch of the Boiling Isles and the feared Warden Wrath. We'd be the strongest power couple ever! It's not like you can say no..."
Guards surrounded them preventing any escape.
"Oh, all right warden you win. I'd just like yo say something first. Come closer."
He brought his face closer to hers, as she inhaled, and blew a large raspberry in his face, causing him to drop Luzura.
"Impudent wretch! Don't you know how many germs are in your mouth?!" He gagged.
"Oh, get over it! You had your guards stalk me and then you cut off my head! I'm not going out with you!"
"If you can't accept, then I must destroy-" *CLANG!*
Warden Wrath fell to the ground, Luzura standing behind him holding Eda's staff.
"Nice kid!" Eda's body took out the other two, and they rushed off ,Luzura attempting to fly away.
"Expecto. Flying. Magicis Escapicis?!" She tried, Warden Wrath slowly getting up.
"We're running out of time, kid! Blast him!" Eda said.
Luzura turned to him, frozen.
"What are you waiting for!? Create a magic circle and blast him!"
Luzura looked back at Eda, stammering, but the look on her face read out loud and clear.
"YOU CAN'T DO MAGIC?!" Eda yelled, "Gun it, magic stick!"
The owl took off, Warden Wrath close behind.
"You're not getting away again, Owl Lady!"
His arms transformed into tendrils, allowing him to gain speed on them. As they raced through the corridors, Luzura and Eda threw the switches on the cells, freeing their prisoners.
They burst out the door, barely flying away before Warden knocked them down to the ground. In the impact, Luzura's mask had torn, falling off.
Warden stood before them, his hand turned into a blade again. Eda tossed her staff to the princess.
"Luzura! Take my staff and go back to the castle!"
"Wait! What about you guys?!"
"If you think this guy is bad, you should've seen her last boyfriend!" King joked.
Eda grabbed him, jumping away from the warden's slices, she put Luzura on her staff and slapped it, it taking off in response.
The warden took his mask off, revealing his terrifying, razor-blade toothed mouth, breathing fire out of it. Eda reflecting the flame back to him with magic circles.
The flame pushed him into the wall, creating a giant hole that the prisoners peeked out of.
Why are they just standing there?
Luzura flew down to them.
"What are you guys doing? You can escape!"
"The warden will catch us, he always does."
"We belong here."
"Self-doubt is a prison you can never escape from."
No. No. No no no no no! They can't jaut give up! What are they thinking?!
"So what?! That's what they've told you! Who cares if you're different?! That's why you're awesome!" Luzura said.
"Why are you helping us?"
"Because us weirdos have to stick together!" Luzura mounted the owl staff flying up, "Nobody should be punished for who they are!"
The prisoners joined in the cheers, following Luzura on their attack of the Warden, who had Eda and King cornered.
"No more running away Owl Lady. Today I capture you once and for all!" He raised his arms for the final blow, only to be piled on by the three prisoners. They tied his hands together pinning him to the floor. Luzura flew in front of him.
"Princess?! How could you do this?!"
"Do NOT underestimate me, Warden Wrath! For I am Luzura, Princess of the Boiling Isles! And I will keep the peace in any way I can!"
"You won't be so cocky once I tell your father about this!"
"And just who do you think he's going to believe? You, an egotistical, power-hungry jerk. Or his loving, caring daughter?"
The warden grew quiet in response.
"That's what I thought."
Suddenly the warden began struggling again, attempting to burn them with his fire breath.
"Luzura, think fast!" Eda said, tossing a strange object towards her, she, in turn, hit it into the warden's mouth, with caused it to explode into bright, colorful lights in the sky.
Everyone cheered as Warden Wrath slithered away in pain. Eda walking up next to Luzura, putting a hand on her shoulder.
"Alright, let's bounce before any more monsters fall in love with me." The three hopped onto the staff, back to the edge of the market, where no one could see them.
"Well, a deal is a deal. You can go now."
Luzura looked at the market, then back at Eda and King.
"Well, goodbye Eda the Owl Lady, and King. I hope we see each other again someday."
Eda blinked in surprise, and smiled.
"Me too, kid."
Eda and King took off, and Luzura went to look for her guards.
"Princess?! Princess! Oh, Titan, where is she?!"
"I'm here! I'm here!"
She ran to her guards, as they nearly collapsed with relief.
"We are SO SORRY, Princess! We lost you and we couldn't find you and the Emperor will be so mad!"
"Don't worry, I'm not gonna tell my father."
"Y-You're not?"
"Nope. This'll be our little secret."
"Oh, Bless you, Princess Luzura! Titan bless you!"
They all returned to the castle in due time. Emperor waiting for them.
"Long trip today. Why is that?" He asked.
"Rush hour came early this time. Father, if you don't mind, I'd like to say something."
"What? What is it?"
"I...overheard Warden Wrath harassing some locals, and his reason for it was completely out of line. I suggest you do something about it, because his attitude is frankly...repulsive."
"I'll have a word with him, dear."
"Good. Thank you." Luzura walked off to her quarters.
"Yikes. What're you gonna do about that tone?" A guard asked him
"Nothing. She's a teenager. You know how they are." The Emperor walked away to the throne room. The guard turned to another.
"Parenthood, man." He said.
"I'm never having kids." The other replied.
Luzura sat in her bedroom at her desk, thinking over the events of the day. The moment where Eda realized she didn't have magic in particular. Why, oh why must that happen? She was the emperor's daughter! How could she be powerless?!
Luzura sighed, and an idea popped into her head. She ruffled through her closet, setting out some day clothes.
It will be a big day tomorrow.
