Bro Sui & Toki’s relationship is just so....🥺🥺🥺😭🥰
So cute! So pure! Like you can tell they know each other well and deeply care for one another and aaaaaaaaaa!!!
Mild spoilers below: ————————————
The last episode where Toki just gently places the winter coat on Sui so he’s not cold and they can go to the shrine together with everyone else honestly just wrecked me emotionally,,, HOW ARE YOU TWO GOING TO BE SO SOFT LIKE THAT HUH!? my heart....😭🥰😍🥺🥺🥺
And that they just instinctively stand next to each other and that whole mocha pounding thing and them being extra together with the rest of their found family!!! 😭😭😭
Sui using Toki’s pottery wares and Toki making sure Sui is okay anytime his brother is mentioned .... they’re a whole family your honor!
This surpasses any otp/brotp thing and is just so HEARTWARMING!!!!
Plus just the way the two care for Gure and Tsubaki too! 🥺🥺🥺🥺
—————————————
This anime as a whole = *chef’s kiss* 👌 (yes a pun and an appropriate one at that fufu)
But Sui, Toki and Kinako (how can you not love a chubby smug cat?!) took the cake for me 🥰

Best Underrated Anime Group I Round 1: #I4 vs #I5
#I4: Colorblind witch meets her granny’s friends by time travel
Despite the kaleidoscopic magic ingrained in everyday life, Hitomi Tsukishiro's monochrome world is deprived of emotion and feeling. On a night as black and white as any other, amidst the fireworks spreading across the sky, Hitomi's grandmother Kohaku conjures a spell, for which she has been harnessing the moon's light for 60 years, to send Hitomi back in time to the year 2018 when Kohaku was in high school.
Hitomi's mission seems unclear, but her grandmother assures her that she will know when she gets there. Following a trip through time aboard a train driven by a strange yellow creature, Hitomi finds herself in stoic artist Yuito Aoi's room, and his drawings flood her world with color. What is Hitomi's purpose there, and why do Yuito's drawings return such breathtaking color to her drab world?

#I5: Comfort-food anime, 4 guys managing a cafe
Kyousui "Sui" Tougoku inherits a traditional Japanese-style cafe called Rokuhoudou from his grandfather, which he manages alongside Gregorio "Gure" Valentino, Tokitaka Nagae, and Tsubaki Nakao. Having gone through their own share of trials and tribulations, the staff at this modest cafe do their best to serve their customers—whether it be through tea, sweets, or even helping with the various troubles one may have.
Although most days pass pleasantly, the small world of Sui and his friends takes an unexpected path when their reputation as a cafe flourishes overnight.

#I4: Iroduku: The World in Colors
youtube
Propaganda:
It’s the kind of show I only watched once, but it stayed with me to this day. It has a unique story that, despite having supernatural elements, feels grounded in human emotions the most. A rare but solid example of magical realism.
The premise is so original, yet very easy to grasp from a start. The time-travel and magic simply lay a groundwork for the story to carry on. If you were ever frustrated by how in supernatural shows there isn’t enough time to explore characters’ emotional depth bc plot, then this anime will be a delightful breather for you. Because the whole show is about the main character’s healing process, learning to overcome her fears, opening up to others… It’s a journey of a lonely, broken person who finds meaning to her life in a distant timeline. And it’s wonderful and painful on all levels.
The visuals, animation, background art are all stunning. Usage of colour is meaningful, to portray heroine’s colourblindess with proper weight. The show isn’t black/white for the viewers, but when she sees colours, they truly make them shine. Soundtrack wise, ending song is heartbreakingly beautiful and encapsulates the feeling of the whole series perfectly.
TL;DR: It's magical but not intense. Sad but comforting.
(I hope I did it justice. Pls watch it, it has 12 eps that are 100% enough for this story <3 )
Trigger Warnings: Not stated.

#I5: Rokuhou-dou Yotsuiro Biyori

Propaganda:
The overall calming atmosphere of the café and the peace good food can bring—this forms the basis of the human interaction happening at Rokuhoudou, the café. We see people finding comfort in the food they have while at the café, and it seriously so sweet. A lot of people might enjoy this.
Trigger Warnings: None.

Did Nobunaga receive a pink hawk?
Tumblr media
They say hawks are one of the good luck items for New Year, so I have a hawk story this time.
About a few years ago I found a transcript of Nobunaga’s letter to Date Terumune that was saying that he was pleased to have received a rare tokitaka「鴾鷹」 from Terumune. The explanation says that 鴾 is another spelling for 鴇 (also read as “toki”), which means a Japanese ibis. Tokitaka 鴾鷹 is then interpreted as a hawk with the colour of a “toki”. Traditionally, the colour of toki is understood to be pink.
Tumblr media
When I looked this up, I was only able to find a citation to Okuno Tadahiro’s compilation and analysis of Nobunaga-related documents (織田信長文書の研究) and not the actual text. I imagine this analysis was quoted from that book.
At that point I put it aside because it’s just so bizarre (a pink hawk? Really?), and I can’t find a copy of Okuno’s book that isn’t incredibly costly. The digitised copy was also locked, and only viewable in the physical computers in the Japanese National Library, so I cannot verify.
Well, there’s an updated analysis of it that I found, whereupon someone actually showed the actual letter and transcribed the word differently:
Tumblr media
According to this new analysis, the hawk is actually described as 鴘鷹 (presumably pronounced “hentaka”). This actually refers to a young hawk, approximately two years old. This is more straightforward, and makes a lot more sense.
Alas, looks like there were no pink hawks.
鴘 and 鴾 indeed looks very similar, so it’s not strange for someone to have misread the text.

Guns!!! And Tanegashima goes pow pow 🔫
Tumblr media
Take a shot every time you see the joke "Demon Slayer would take half of the time if they gave a gun to Inozuke", then they realise that Genya does have a gun and that Inozuke does not have one because for him that's probably an alien mechanism (Or an Oni one ba dum tsss). And then everyone asks: "WHY DOES GENYA AS A GUN?!" CAUSE THEY WERE A THING AT THE TIME FOR GOODNESS GRACE!!! Once again this happens because people forget that we are in the Taisho Era [1912-1926] and that Japan was a war machine, while being in the perception that they did not know what guns where, because of the tale that the true warrior would only use a katana. Well, let me tell you that the Japanese loved a good gun ever since the 16th century and we have the Portuguese to thank for that. (PORTUGAL C*R*LH*) The Portuguese arrived at Tanegashima in 1543. And arrived by accident. At the time the Ming Empire and the Japanese Empire were not in good terms (are we even surprised?), and with the Ming closing the borders to foreign trade, it was the pirates that made the trade (cue the One Piece opening). The Waku (not waku waku meaning excited for the love of God, Waku means pirate) would trade the Japanese silver for Chinese silks, but still with a lot to gamble. And then the Portuguese arrived at Macau, and casually became the 3rd party that brought to the Japanese and Chinese what was needed for the trade. Now in the Japanese ports more western trinkets would show like bread, tobacco, dark skinned people, plants, and you guessed it, guns!
Tumblr media
When the Portuguese and other Europeans [mainly Dutch] arrived in Japan, the country was at war [yes, the Sengoku Jiddai], so every type of war mechanism would be welcomed. The Daimyo of Tanegashima - Tanegashima Tokitaka - saw one Portuguese sailor, that arrived in a Chinese cargo, shooting ducks, and he quickly asked for shooting lessons. Soon he would buy the gun for himself and order his swordsmiths to replicate the weapons. Within a year the Japanese were able to replicate the gun and within a decade there would be gunsmiths all over the territory. The gun was called “tanegashima” only later being called “teppo”. There would be also books that would explain how to use them. But these weapons would be quickly adopted, used, but also quickly abandoned. By 1560 guns were already being used in battle. The battle of Nagashino was the most iconic one in history in these terms, since Oda Nobunaga used for the 1st time western techniques merged with the Japanese ones. But there was one problem with using guns in battle, all the rituals that took place before could be in danger (oh the drama). Normally, before the slaughter, enemies would exchange some words like presenting themselves or exchanging complements. But with guns, one could skip that and just shoot from afar. Guns were starting to be seem as double edge sword (please appreciate the joke). Everyone could learn to fire a gun and because of that it became a symbol of a lowly warrior. The mighty samurai still carried the 2 swords, the low-ranking ones started carrying a sword and a gun. Firearms were at its hight, and because of that the resistance would begin. A lowly farmer could kill a samurai. The skill stopped being needed in the warrior but in the weapon. On one hand everyone realised that these guns were superior, but on the other, no one on the bushi class would use them. The Japanese moved from sword to sword with guns, to only swords again. The last big battle were guns had a part was in the Shimabara rebellion. And after that samurai when back to the sword lessons. In reality there was never a formal ban of firearms in Japan. The Tokugawa Shoguns 1st started to control the production of Guns in 1607, were then 1st tried to unite all gunsmiths in the same place at Nagahama. Japan's being against the use of the gun could also be explain to his general reaction against outside ideas. People would try to adapt and develop new guns and swords ideas thanks to the small contacts that still came from the Dutch in Deshima, but the true revolution came with Commodore Matthew Perry and when he opened the borders by force. And so, the new government would develop a new military force, inspired by the western counterparts, and would ban the samurai from wearing their swords, and would put guns in the hands of the officials. At the turn of the XX century Japan was caught up with the new military technology from the west and will start to use them in a war force that would astound the Western side of the world.

Teppo, Hinawaju, Guns of the Samurai
The first matchlock guns, known as a "Hinawaju" or "Teppo" (some earlier guns were also known as Tanegashima, after the island upon which the first Portuguese had introduced the weapons, and Tanegashima Tokitaka, lord of the island who purchased the first two guns) arrived with Portuguese traders in 1543 and their potential was quickly recognized, changing samurai battles considerably as strategy and tactics developed.
Whereas archers were previously used first and foremost, the relative simplicity of the gun allowed even the ashigaru foot soldier with limited training, to become a formidable fighting unit. The early weapons had a range of 2-300 + meters, yet an effective range against armour of about 50 to 75 meters. Guns were now frontline weapons, often backed by archers, who were themselves backed by spearmen, ready to rush forward. Despite the numbers and effectiveness of the gun, matchlocks never overtook nor suppressed archery as a major battle weapon.
When a Chinese junk carrying Portuguese sailors on board anchored to weather a storm, Lord Tanegashima Tokitaka witnessed a demonstration of the guns and purchased two of the weapons. He had his swordsmith, Yaita ,copy the pieces, which he could do, but had a major problem with creating the threading on the breach bolt. The following year, the traders returned, and with them came a Portuguese blacksmith. The problem was solved, and Japanese production of the firearms began in earnest.
Just 32 years after guns had arrived, Oda Nobunaga had proven their value in defeating Takeda Katsuyori at the Battle of Nagashino in 1575, when, according to legend, his 3,000 men in ranks of three provided a near continuous volley of fire at the approaching enemy, with devastating results. (Recent studies have suggested that instead of rows of three, the Oda samurai were possibly working in teams of three to first load gunpowder and fit a musket ball, then hand the weapon on to prepare the pantray and matchcord, and then pass it ready to the shooter.)
The guns were of relatively simple construction, a steel bore fitted with a wooden stock. A priming pan on the right of the bore sat below a serpentine lever holding a length of smoldering, saltpetre-impregnated cord. When the trigger was pulled, the spring-loaded serpentine dropped the slow burning cord into the priming powder in the open pan. Bang!
The marksmen carried either a small flask of gunpowder and a smaller container of priming powder, or pre-measured powder packs in paper tubes kept in a small box tied around their waist. This made recharging quicker, and so using the wooden ramrod housed in the gun’s stock to pack the powder and ram home the lead ball meant that all could be performed ideally in as little as 40 seconds. However, during the heat of battle, on damp or windy days, reloading a matchlock weapon could take significantly longer.
It has been estimated that 25,000 matchlock guns, or 30 percent of all the guns in existence worldwide at the time were used at The Battle Of Sekigahara. In all of Europe, only 30,000 guns were believed to be in use. Japan had a total of approximately 55,000 of these projectile weapons, and in fact had more guns than any other country at that time.
At the end of the Edo Period, there were some 200 blacksmith groups making the matchlock gun.

#41: Rokuhodo Colorful Days
Tumblr media
This felt... way too cutesy, I must say. Don't get me wrong, I love me sweet fluff from time to time but this felt too forcefully cheerful and cute. IMO, they tried way too hard and the end result just didn't feel really natural.
Which is too bad because the boys' back stories could've made for a really interesting drama otherwise. The found family trope was strong with this one and it's too bad that the writers didn't let that speak for itself. And when I say family, I'm not talking just about the four boys at the inn but also Yakyo and his pâtissier, Eisuke. Or the other restaurant owner, his little daughter and his clumsy help.
In the end, I found Tokitaka's backstory the most intriguing - and his relationship with Sui the most interesting, that everyone called them "mom" and "dad", respectively. But also Eisuke, whom I couldn't stand at first, turned out so fascinating! Especially his relationship with Yakyo.
Still, because of its overt sugary sweetness, it felt a bit boring. Too bad...

Best Underrated Anime Group I Round 2: #I5 vs #I8
#I5: Comfort-food anime, 4 guys managing a cafe
#I8: “I’m sick of being a tragic girl, so we’re gonna punch god in the face!”
Details and poll under the cut!

#I5: Rokuhou-dou Yotsuiro Biyori

Summary:
Kyousui “Sui” Tougoku inherits a traditional Japanese-style cafe called Rokuhoudou from his grandfather, which he manages alongside Gregorio “Gure” Valentino, Tokitaka Nagae, and Tsubaki Nakao. #I8: Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero (Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru)
youtube
Summary:
In her everyday life, Yuuna Yuuki is a hero. As proof, she is in her middle school's Hero Club, where she does her best to help others and bring a smile to everyone's face.
But Yuuna, always up to any task, is about to become an even bigger hero. Mysterious destructive forces called Vertexes begin threatening the world she loves, and the Hero Club is called upon by a strange phone app to save it. Along with her best friend Mimori Tougou, as well as sisters Fuu and Itsuki Inubouzaki, they must transform into magical girls in order to battle the Vertexes.
In between studying and putting on shows for kids, Yuuna and the Hero Club must fight for the very existence of their world and face the harsh truths behind their own powers, all the while discovering what it truly means to be a hero.
Propaganda:
I adored this show from the moment I watched it because throughout it all, it’s hopeful. These girls go through a lot. A LOT. A lot of horrible, horrible things, and yet they bounce back. These girls bounce back pretty much every single time and do anything to help their friends do the same. To me, that is insanely inspiring.
The cast of characters here are also insanely compelling. They feel like actual, real friends—doing things together, hanging out, comforting each other and laughing with them all the same. This point I feel helps that sense of hope this show has absolutely.
The character designs in general too are absolutely breathtaking, and are nothing like I’ve ever seen from any other magical girl anime. Also, one last thing: this show’s soundtrack is done by MONACA. MONACA is also known for doing the first two NieR games. Take that what you will :)
Trigger Warnings: Flashing Lights, Self-Harm, Suicide

Japanese Omurice from Rokuhoudou no Yotsuiro Biyori
(Best viewed on a computer - tumblr mobile seems to eat up all my gifs!)
I always love new takes on ‘classic’ food, as well as food which hold a special memory/meaning to a character. This was the first dish served before they opened the restaurant for real - when someone was disappointed that Sui’s grandpa’s cafe was not open anymore - made with whatever was left in the kitchen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ingredients (for 2)
100 g butter
1 carrot, diced
1 yellow onion, diced
100g shirasuboshi (pic below) Basically small whitebait?
225 ml short grain japonica rice, uncooked
Men Tsuyu - get the whole bottle ready. (Noodle soup base for dipping cold soba/udon into. It’s basically soy sauce mixed with dashi, so you can approximate your own if you don’t have a Daiso nearby where it’s just $2.)
2-3 eggs per plate, beaten. (depending on size of eggs. You need a good fluffy omelette. So 4-6 eggs if you’re cooking for 2 people.)
1.5-2 tbsp starch (katakuriko)
Tumblr media
For Garnish
¼ daikon radish, peeled and grated.
Seaweed (nori) strips (or cut your own)
Spring Onions, chopped.
Method
Tumblr media
Set the rice to cook in your rice cooker! (This will take at least 20 mins so you can do all the other prep work in the meantime.)
Melt butter in pan.
Add in the onions and saute on low heat till transparent.
Add in the carrots and saute until slightly soft.
Add in the shirasuboshi, and stirfry for about 2-3 minutes.
Add in the rice, and toss well to mix.
Add the tsuyu to coat the rice to taste.
Remove rice from pan onto plates.
Heat the pan again with some oil or butter.
Pour the beaten eggs (plate by plate) into the pan and keep stirring your spatula, as if cooking scrambled eggs. But stop when the eggs start to solidify, so that you still get a good thick creamy omelette.
Cover the pan so that the top of the egg cooks after that for about 30 secs-1min.
Slide egg onto rice to cover it.
Repeat 9-12 for other people’s plates.
Dissolve the starch in 300ml of water, and put it into the pan.
Add the tsuyu to taste again and cook, stirring so it doesn’t clump, until the sauce is thick!
Pour sauce over the omelette and rice.
Garnish with radish, seaweed, and spring onions! I found that using a ladle to make a depression at the top of the mound helps the radish sit better.
Serve with green tea and enjoy! Good for people who hate fish!
