Tolkien Playlists Masterpost

I made a lot of Tolkien related playlists on spotify during the last year to organise my music library, if anyone is interested here they are:

The Legendarium

From the Ainulindalë to the War of Wrath, with an extra mention of the Dagor Dagorath at the end to close the narrative (events in chronological order, mostly metal with some acoustic and ambient pieces)

Second and Third Age, from Numenor to the events of The Hobbit to the full lotr storyline (events in chronological order, mostly metal with some acoustic and ambient pieces)

From the Ainulindalë to the end of the Third Age (events in chronological order, instrumental classical and acoustic music only, including the movies soundtrack)

One Playlist To Rule Them All: a selection of my favourite Tolkien astists on spotify (mostly metal, tracks sorted by artist)

Chill Roadtrip AU: small selection of Tolkien themed chillhop and downtempo

Characters

Eärendil: mostly ambient metal and some acoustic tracks to journey through the stars

Thingol and Melian: Doriath ambient playlist, with some medieval and acoustic tracks, enchanted forest and fae court vibes

Aragorn: acoustic and metal songs for reclaimed kingdoms and long distance love stories

Tar-Miriel: slow and haunted vibes for the Downfall of Numenor, water and drowning themes

Legolas: soft acoustic and folk tracks, relaxing and nature themed with some sea longing vibes

Maglor: metal and acoustic songs for the poorest little meow meow

Fëanor: power metal only for the Spirit of Fire himself

Sauron: mainly black metal, playlist for evil necromancers only

Hey, I am really curious what music the Tolkien fandom likes to listen to (On that note I would like to recommend Oonagh, she is a german singer who sings a lot of songs that have to do with Tolkien works, partly in german and partly in Sindarin - I would recommend the songs 'Feanor', 'Aulë und Yavanna' and 'Aeria'... but all of them are pretty great!).

The music doesn't necessarily have to have anything to do with Tolkien, I'd just be interested to know in general how broad the taste in music is in the fandom or whether you like listening to music at all. (Because I certainly do😅)

I don't really know why, but I find it kind of interesting. I see a lot of other fandoms sharing playlists but I haven't found something similar in this fandom.

(For those who are interested, my favorite artist (at the moment) is IU, but I also love to listen to the lotr and the hobbit soundtracks because they are masterpieces)

Kinda hokey but idk it’s grown on me.

It’s called “The Walking Song” aka the full version of “Pippin’s Song” from the Return of the King film. It’s sung cheerfully, as it’s meant to be.

Back when I first read the LotR, I admit I didn’t have the patience for the poetry and song Older now, I can appreciate them.

listen. in theory, i know that the hobbit was published in the 1930s and lotr was published in the 1950s, but conceptually, that's never fully sunk in. people were talking about bilbo baggins while world war ii bombs were flying overhead. discussing their favorite characters merry and pippin alongside the news of the brand new polio vaccine. making jokes about mordor between fireside chats. like that's absolutely crazy to me. unreal

As much as I adore conlangs, I really like how the Imperial Radch books handle language. The book is entirely in English but you're constantly aware that you're reading a "translation," both of the Radchaai language Breq speaks as default, and also the various other languages she encounters. We don't hear the words but we hear her fretting about terms of address (the beloathed gendering on Nilt) and concepts that do or don't translate (Awn switching out of Radchaai when she needs a language where "citizen," "civilized," and "Radchaai person" aren't all the same word) and noting people's registers and accents. The snatches of lyrics we hear don't scan or rhyme--even, and this is what sells it to me, the real-world songs with English lyrics, which get the same "literal translation" style as everything else--because we aren't hearing the actual words, we're hearing Breq's understanding of what they mean. I think it's a cool way to acknowledge linguistic complexity and some of the difficulties of multilingual/multicultural communication, which of course becomes a larger theme when we get to the plot with the Presgar Translators.

#imperial radch #also a great example of the 'you don't have to be Tolkien' phenomenon #if you want to think about linguistic differences by building all the languages in your setting #and being able to explain what those differences are through actual texts in the language in question #that's AWESOME #but it's not the only way to do it #it's also interesting because of course this style only works in book form #everyone's speaking different languages but in a written account they're all 'translated' for you #but of course if it was a TV series they would all have to be speaking a language the audience understands #(or you *would* have to go wild with conlangs) #and i think that's really cool as well-- #how for a series where song is so central we don't actually hear any of the actual in-universe words or any of the music #it's all been filtered #and again you know this is happening but seeing the examples of how real songs--the shape hymns and 'L'homme Arme'--are presented #makes you a lot more viscerally aware of how limited your perspective is #it's good #ann leckie i love you
