The cove is a place that holds many memories with different meanings to Hiccup and Toothless, but tonight it’s the scene of their greatest disappointment.

They’ve always been close, much closer than other riders and their dragons, but it was on Dragon’s Edge that their relationship went into a new direction. It had become sexual, it almost felt like the natural next step. They had always been curious of one another and the seclusion of their own island just gave the extra push they needed to experiment and then move on to full intimacy. They became complete in a whole new way.

After the Hunters and the Flyers, their official return to Berk hadn’t persuaded them in any way to stop their affair. But growing older did give Toothless a new want in life. They were both 20, one of them was moving to a different phase in life.

His back aches with the strain and his thighs burn from the workout, his heart and lungs can’t keep up. As a dragon in heat, he’s rough, growling above him, claws digging into the dirt on either side of him, but still, he tries his best to keep up.

Taking advantage of his release, a clawed forepaw digs into Hiccup's lower back to keep him in place. His agile hips snap a few more desperate thrust into his mate's overly sensitive body. It's almost torture for him, but it’s also torture on the dragon to not take this chance.

But then Toothless stays in place and a heat washes throughout Hiccup's gut, earning one more sudden orgasm out of his writhing mate that is drawn out purely by the sensation of being cummed in. He has come, releasing every ounce of seed deep within him.

Dragons don't tend to make sounds like humans do. They claw, they growl, some roar and even fight, but when they do make sound, it's not like a human would. Toothless almost sounds angry, his breathing so loud and deep with a growling underneath. And whenever Hiccup threatens to slip free, his clawed hold on him urges his burning thighs to stay in place.

He has to keep him there, after all. Can't properly breed someone if they don't take everything you've got to give and don't let every ounce down to the last drop settle warm and deep inside.

There's a pit of guilt in Hiccup's stomach as the pleasure of his orgasm slowly fades away, the afterglow goes quite neglected by them both.

It’s only as of late that their couplings have become so rough. There’s almost no time given to foreplay, whenever it comes down to this Toothless needs to be inside him. Hiccup knows there's instinct tied to his desperation, to these matings that are threatening to become a nightly thing. And the urge does conveniently always hit at night, prime Night Fury time. His dragon wants to desperately fill him up, but with the intention to leave him full of eggs and continue his lineage and that simply isn't happening.

The fact that Toothless knows it will never work, but can’t ignore this deeply rooted feeling in his core almost makes it worse. And Hiccup can't stop enabling him. He feels bad if he lets him do as he wants, but also feels bad if he doesn't. He already can’t provide him with what he wants.

For neither one of them here, there's a win. There’s just a heap of disappointment.

I'm trying to count how many times Hiccup is captured/kidnapped throughout both series, the movies and the short films, so here's my criteria:

Any time he is unwillingly moved from one location to another by a dragon, viking or other character.

This includes any dragons picking him up and flying off somewhere, even if he is okay with it later.

This does not include when Toothless/his friends drag him off to show him something.

Any situation that prompted the dragon riders to rescue him.

Any plans that involved him giving himself up or joining up with a villain/antagonist.

This does not include the time he and Dagur were trapped on that island together.

Any time he is tied up and led somewhere or locked up/held in place with a guard.

Here is the list of situations I have compiled in (hopefully) chronological order:

S3E8 - Hiccup and Toothless get caught in a Dragon Hunter Trap and are kidnapped and forced to participate in dragon fights.

S3E12 - Viggo captures all the Dragon Riders at the auction.

S3E13 - The Defenders of the Wing capture the Dragon Riders.

S4E3 - First Hiccup is caught by Amos and Berthel.

S4E3 - Then he's caught by Savage.

S4E10 - Hiccup is caught with Ruffnut when he tries to rescue her from Viggo's trap. Unlike the other traps, he needs the other dragon riders to rescue them.

S5E2 - The Sandbuster captures Hiccup and Snotlout.

S6E8 - Viggo hands Hiccup over to Krogan as part of their plan.

HTTYD 2

Valka kidnaps Hiccup and Toothless.

HTTYD 3

Grimmel captures the dragon riders.

Up For Debate:

There are a few situations which technically fit the criteria, but I'm not sure if they fit considering the context of the show:

S5E5 - the riders are stuck on Vanaheim, guarded by the Sentinels. (Rtte)

S1E3 - This is a technicality, but when Hiccup joins up with Dagur to keep him away from the other dragons. (Dob)

EDIT: I forgot that even though my criteria says that the time Dagur and Hiccup are trapped on that island together (S3E1 of RTTE) doesn't count, because he is joining up with an (at the time) antagonist, there is a moment when Hiccup is captured by Dragon Hunters near the end of the episode.

After careful discussion (aka me ranting at my roommate) S4E10 of RTTE is also moving from "up for debate" to the official list. These changes are reflected above.

This brings our official count to 22 captures/kidnappings!

Honestly, the hardest part about this was finding the distinction between being captured or being trapped and what I wanted to count. When Hiccup isn't captured, he spends a lot of time in traps.

I was watching httyd 1 with a friend and she noticed this…

When they have captured Toothless in the ring a Viking walks up beside Stoick with an axe, awaiting orders to kill the beast

And Stoick looks at the axe

Then he looks at Toothless

And finally he pushes the axe away, telling them to “put it with the others” instead

I always wondered why Stoick didn’t immediately kill Toothless, now I understand. Although Stoick didn’t understand it, his son had begged him not to hurt Toothless, and for once, in this bitter-sweet moment of mercy, Stoick listened to his son

Once again these are some older artworks but I watched the how to train your dragon movies for the first time in march this year (yes it’s disappointingly late) and I got emotionally attached to hiccup. That of course means I have to put him in more pain then cannon because if I like them they suffer

...I did skip episode 12-the Thawfest episode. It's honestly not my favorite, but the main whump potential for that...sports injuries.

HTTYD WHUMP POTENTIAL SERIES

S1, EP 13: When Lightning Strikes

Berk builds metal supports for the dragons throughout the village... and storms galore and lightning galore.

Lightning strikes the huts and fire! And smoke! And people are inside the burning buildings! So much whump potential - burns and smoke in the throat and probably other stuff I'm not thinking of.

The village turns on Toothless, the Offspring of Lightning. Hiccup decides to leave the island entirely with Toothless. He says goodbye to Astrid and says he might come back. Emotional whump! On multiple accounts! Not only is Hiccup leaving his home, which he considered doing in the movie, he's leaving Astrid... who's probably struggling with Emotion, since she has kissed Hiccup twice now (movie and Thawfest) and now he's leaving her.

Toothless is struck by lightning. His tail is gone and they crash into trees.

Hiccup then touched the still hot metal. Ok, yes, his hands are probably calloused from working in the Forge and whatnot, but that had to have given him a burn.

Toothless gets locked up. In a device we've seen before. After he's forcibly driven away from Hiccup. I'm feeling Deja Vu and the two are probably fighting back memories...oh, whump potential of just PTSD and flashbacks.

Hiccup is struck by lightning and falls into the ocean. Lightning is electricity is painful, and probably left scars- I've seen decent fanart of it. But pain, muscles seizing and locking and he falls unconscious..into the ocean below and is sinking - he's not able to hold his breath. Drowning.

And....he's presumably unconscious for awhile and y'know the PTSD? The first thing he checks when he wakes up is... whether or not he has his other leg.

All Toothless wants is for Hiccup to stay for a little while longer when he visits. The boy came into his life, turned it upside down, and now he won’t even do him the joy of staying.

He always comes back either with the rising sun or when the sun is at its peak. He’ll have improved the tailfin or the saddle by then and they’ll practice flying together. They’ll play, explore the island together and Toothless knows this. Yet… He feels so lonely whenever Hiccup leaves.

By now, the yellow glow of another dawn has already turned into shades of blue. There is barely a cloud today, perfect for flying and so he can’t wait for Hiccup to finally arrive. This just happens to be one of those days when he’s late and the dragon never knows why.

He lies by the pond, waiting for his friend to come. He watches the fish swim, he can’t catch them as efficiently without full control of his flight. It’s a dragon’s ability to dive into the water that gets them the fish they need. He watches birds fly overhead, aching that he can’t be in the sky that’s rightfully his when even tiny creatures like them can call it their own. Do they even know the kingdom they inhabit? There are also barely any dragons that fly over this island.

After years of being stuck in that volcano, forced to serve a cruel queen, he thought he would be sick of other dragons. Until a little human fledgling took him down, he would either be in some kind of cramped corner afraid to make the queen angry or he would be flying in a cramped pack afraid of making the queen angry on the way home. There was never any space, no rest, no way to breathe, just constant fear.

Then Hiccup came and suddenly there was freedom. No more cruel queen, but no more dragons either.

But it has become clear to Toothless that Hiccup isn’t free. He’s stuck with that stupid village of his, a friend of dragons stuck amongst dragon killers. He can’t stay with Toothless and keep him from getting lonely at night, when a Night Fury is supposed to be awake.

Toothless can’t fly, he has no dragons around, Hiccup can’t be with him. And so he’s forced to be alone, stuck inside another kind of prison.

This scene is so important

Hiccup takes a big step on his bad leg after he’s taken a deep breath, because Hiccup is in denial, Hiccup wants to believe that it’s still the same, that his terrible leg injury won’t affect him.

When it inevitably hurts Hiccup bites down through the pain, because it simply wouldn’t have healed enough to allow him to walk on it.

The pain surely doesn’t fade quickly, but his face does change. He no longer bites down in pain, he frowns and he looks down, displaying emotional pain rather than physical pain, because he must suddenly be very drained by the thought that he could do nothing about it

Plagued Thoughts

This story is based on @issy5316 head-canon that Ryker wanted to see Viggo to say happy birthday to him in Shell Shocked part one.

Viggo silently lie on Hiccup's bed feeling more pathetic than he'd felt in a long time. His back was bruised terribly from the fall into the volcano and was now gruesomely burned on the left side of his face. He would most likely be blind in that eye, but at least he was alive and, in other words, well. However there was another problem that plagued Viggo's thoughts.

Guilt.

Ryker was dead and it was all Viggo's fault. His brother was gone because of him. Hiccup was next to Viggo quietly petting Toothless while he read a book to himself. The dragon wasn't particularly happy about Viggo's presence. The others weren't too happy about it either, but despite their protests Hiccup told them all quite literally to suck it up. Viggo was injured and there wasn't much he could do with his new permanent injury.

"I know why he wanted me," whispered Viggo so quietly it barely audible.

"What do you mean?" asked Hiccup confusingly as he stopped petting Toothless and sat his book down on the nightstand next to the bed to give Viggo his full attention.

"Ryker," began Viggo "I know why he wanted you to bring me to him."

Hiccup narrowed his eyes and pulled his chair closer to Viggo.

"How would you know what he wanted?" scoffed Viggo "You weren't there and he never told us!"

Viggo leaned his head to the left to face Hiccup as best he could. Hiccup was using the fact that he couldn't see as a safety precaution, and Viggo couldn't blame the boy. Not after the stunt he pulled with Astrid. It only when Hiccup noticed Viggo's eyes were filled with tears when he realized that he was telling the truth. Whatever Viggo was going to say was personal for him and Ryker both. Viggo took a deep breath before he resumed speaking.

"There was one day every year where Ryker would stop everything he was doing even if we had been fighting..." explained Viggo sadly " He alway's made sure he had time to tell me happy birthday."

Hiccup's eyes widened as Viggo let out a choked sob. Had Ryker really been planning to tell Viggo happy birthday.

"I feel terrible," cried Viggo "I should've done something! Why couldn't I have just listened to him!?"

Hiccup wasn't sure about what he should do. Viggo was mourning the loss of his brother and blamed himself for it. He knew what Ryker was going to do if Hiccup brought him to his older brother had he and the riders knew where Viggo was at the time, and even if they did there wouldn't have been any telling if what Viggo said was entirely true. Now Viggo would never have that moment with Ryker again. Hiccup leaned down and wrapped his arms around Viggo hoping it would help console him in any way. Toothless had walked around to the other side of the bed and rested his head on Viggo's chest. Viggo was grateful for what they were trying to do. Unfortunately though, no amount of comfort would stop the guilt from eating him alive. All they could do right now was make sure he wouldn't let the regret swallow him whole.
