[Robin scrambled over the back of the sofa and wedged himself beside Oscar, absently watching TV. Part of him hoped his father wouldn’t wake, but he was a notoriously light sleeper so the chances were slim. Sure enough, Oscar stirred, sleepily wrapping an arm around his son with a cosy hum] Oscar: Mmh-.. what time is it? Robin: I don’t know. Oscar: Late, then… [Robin shrugged a shoulder, the steady rhythm of his father’s heartbeat soothing his frayed nerves; he wished they could just stay like this forever-.. Oscar’s breathing softened as he threatened to drift off again though, reminding Robin why he’d clambered out of bed in the first place] Robin: Papa.. can I ask you something? Oscar: Anything. [Robin held his breath, readying himself for the inevitable barrage of Oscar’s unpleasant memories] Robin: Can you tell me the truth about what Larry said? I asked grandma, but she made me promise I’d ask you too-.. that you’d explain it better than her. Oscar: Is that what you’ve been thinking about this whole time? Robin: I don’t want you to die again… Oscar: I’m not going anywhere, I promise. Robin: You can’t exactly promise something like that. Oscar: I promise I’ll try my best not to, then. Robin: You still think about that sorta stuff though, don’t you? How do you know it won’t happen again? [Oscar sighed as he righted himself and settled Robin atop his knee, wondering what on earth Sidney had told him] Robin: She said you knew the risks-.. why’d you do it? Oscar: I wasn’t thinking straight-.. bit off more than I could chew. I was in a pretty bad place at the time. Robin: Why? Oscar: I like to keep things to myself, but it doesn’t do you any favours; I used to use all that nasty stuff to bury my feelings, to numb the pain it caused me to keep it all locked up n’ keep going. Robin: But everyone has secrets, don’t they? Oscar: They do, the fewer the better though-.. I think you’re as bad as me for bottling stuff up, but it’s so important to talk about things n’ let people help, ‘cause otherwise you’ll just end up finding unhealthy ways to cope instead. Robin: So, it happened by accident? Oscar: Yeah-.. it was pretty scary, to be honest. Robin: But it definitely wasn’t on purpose? Oscar: Sometimes I figured it’d be easier, but I didn’t want to die, no. Robin: I don’t want you to either, not ever. Oscar: It’s normal to be frightened of losing the people you love. Robin: Really? Oscar: Yeah-.. I used to worry about my grandad dying when I was your age. Sometimes it’d randomly pop into my head and I’d wonder what I’d do without him n’ get all pissy with everyone ‘til I could be alone, then I’d cry about it. [Robin felt a twinge of sadness yet smiled faintly, feeling slightly less weird for worrying so excessively] Robin: Sorry I asked grandma first… Oscar: It’s alright, being curious is normal too. [Oscar squeezed Robin tightly, semi-wishing he’d explained a little sooner; he was so mature for his age sometimes] Oscar: I’ll never ever be upset with you for asking questions, okay? There’s nothing you can’t talk to me about. Robin: I didn’t want to make you remember. Oscar: The past is what makes us who we are, buddy-.. I just hope I’ve made enough mistakes for the both of us…

Episode 29: Bright Ideas
Tumblr media
Lucy followed Damien to his office, unsure of what to expect. “So, we finally meet!” He was cheerful and upbeat, not quite what Lucy was anticipating when she envisioned their first meeting. She sort of thought he’d be cloaked in the shadows, speaking in riddles with a hushed voice. But standing before her now, he was warm and friendly, which eased her worries about their impromptu meeting.
Tumblr media
“Yes, I’m glad we’re finally having a conversation!” she told him.
“I would like to apologize for that,” he stated sympathetically. “I know I haven’t been leading things here the way I should, and I owe you an explanation.” He paused and cleared his throat.
Tumblr media
“A few months ago, I basically cleared out upper management. They knew the ins and outs of the business side of things, and that helped me grow Rainy Day to where it is today. But they didn’t understand the people. I’ve been wanting to tap into the creativity of our team and explore new ideas for a while now, but after losing my mom earlier this year I had to step back.” Lucy could see the pain in Damien’s eyes as he spoke about his loss.
Tumblr media
“I’m sorry to hear that. I can understand why you’d need to take some time away,” she told him.
Damien thanked her. “It has helped, but I wish I had been around more to facilitate all of the changes. Then again, it seems everyone is doing a great job without my interference.”
Lucy was relieved to finally get some feedback about how things were going. “So you’re happy with everything?” she asked expectantly.
Tumblr media
“Indeed I am. Everything went exactly as I’d hoped. I guess I found the right person for the job.” He smiled at Lucy with a little wink.
“Oh, well I can’t take credit for our success,” she admitted. “We’ve got a great group of people here. They’re the ones who’ve really put in the work.”
“They are a talented group, that’s for sure,” he agreed. “But in order to really tap into that talent, I needed someone who could look at this group and see all the nuances: their strengths and their weaknesses, their chemistry with other people, how they work the best. That someone was you.”
Tumblr media
Lucy was flattered but unsure if she was deserving of all of Damien’s praise. “Anyone could have done that,” she countered.
“Anyone could have. But no one did. That is, until you came along. That’s why you’re different.” Lucy thanked him for his faith in her, but she was still hesitant to take too much credit.
Tumblr media
Damien promised her he would be more hands on going forward. “I’ve been hiding for too long. I think it’s time for me to become a part of the team,” he told her, his face lighting up.
Tumblr media
“Welcome to the Sunny Side!” Lucy smiled, glad to finally have Damien's support.

Why wanted to die?
My father and two of my uncles died, and I didn't even feel allowed to grieve because they were kinslayers and "deserved it." I felt like my family was so wrong none of us had to exist, including me. And I had this weird idea that if I had gone with them, I would have protected them. Though I was never much of a fighter, and if Dior managed to kill the three of them, I would have probably died too, and as a kinslayer.

So I was looking for porn
and as I put in "cumshot" in search auto correct was like "gunshot" and it was triggering as fuck. I'm like "damn can I get a nut without thinking about a bullet coming for my black ass?!" Short answer, no.

Robin: Grandma! Sidney: Hi, honey. Robin: Hi. Sidney: Watcha doing?
[Robin wasn’t sure anymore, but he needed to ask something. He wasn’t used to talking to his grandmother though-.. even though he could, it always felt weird and forced. He decided he’d probably just have to be blunt]
Robin: Can I ask you something? Sidney: Shoot. Robin: Can we keep it a secret? I don’t want mom n’ dad to know I asked… Sidney: I can keep a secret.
[Sidney found a sheltered spot behind a rock and patted the sand beside her; Robin had barely taken a seat before launching his question at his grandmother, catching her off guard]
Robin: Has papa ever died-.. or come close?
[Sidney blinked, blindsided by Robin’s question]
Robin: I wanna know the truth too, like.. don’t do that thing grown-ups do n’ coat everything in syrup. Sidney: You really want the non-sugar-coated version..? Robin: Yeah.
[Sidney squinted at Robin, unsure how to proceed. He could tell she didn’t think it was her place to tell him]
Sidney: Why haven’t you asked your father? Robin: I don’t want to. Sidney: He’d tell you, if you asked-.. he’d be grateful for it too. Robin: Grateful? Why?
[Sidney sucked her teeth and buried her hands in the sand for a moment, thinking]
Sidney: Your dad and I never saw eye to eye when he was young, sometimes we still don’t-.. he didn’t trust me enough to talk to me, and I didn’t bother asking, or fixing it. It’s caused a lot of problems between us, so I think he’d appreciate you trusting him enough to ask. Robin: It’ll upset him though. Sidney: Well, tough-.. he can’t hide his past from you forever, he should know by now it always comes n’ bites you on the ass eventually.
[Robin frowned, feeling defensive on behalf of his father]
Robin: He wanted to tell me. Sidney: You’ve already asked?
[Robin shook his head, earning himself a confused look from Sidney; everything was so hard to explain when you had to tiptoe around the truth]
Robin: I want you to tell me. Sidney: I’ll tell you on one condition-.. you ask him about it too. He’ll have my guts for garters if he knew I’d told you and kept it from him. I can’t keep this particular secret, I’m afraid. Robin: Fine.
[Sidney shook her head and sighed; she couldn’t believe she’d been talked into this nonsense by a ten-year-old]
Sidney: Yes, he almost died-.. technically he did, but that’s just a medical thing, I suppose. Robin: Did you save him? Sidney: No.. I was there, but I couldn’t. Robin: Why not? Sidney: I just couldn’t do it; I was a mess! You can’t imagine how it felt, seeing him-…
[Sidney cut herself off, not wanting to go too far-.. but Robin didn’t need to imagine how it felt, he could feel it too. He quickly swallowed the lump in his throat, desperate to know more before his brain imploded with unanswered questions and half-truths]
Robin: What happened? How’d he end up like that? Sidney: Well… Robin: I know about the bad stuff he used to do-.. he drank a lot, was it that? It was in a bar or something, right? Sidney: He’s told you about that?
[Robin shrugged; his father had only alluded to such things, but Sidney didn’t need to know that, nor did she need to know what Larry had inadvertently shown him]
Sidney: Oscar had a lot of issues with drugs and alcohol when he was younger-.. it almost got the better of him that night, I think he just went too far by accident. Robin: So, it wasn’t on purpose? Sidney: Not exactly. Robin: What do you mean? Sidney: He knew the risks-.. but you really shouldn’t be asking about this sort of thing, honey. Robin: Just ‘cause I’m little doesn’t mean I can’t understand.
[Sidney chuckled; the apple certainly didn’t fall far from the tree. Robin was just as headstrong and persistent as his father]
Sidney: Maybe not, but you should be climbing trees and thinking about what’s for pudding-.. don’t worry yourself about all this stuff too much. Not yet, at least. Robin: It’s hard not to-.. did he get better after what happened? Sidney: For a while, then he got worse, then he got better again-.. go n’ talk to him, he’ll make you feel better about what happened. He’s had a good handle on himself for a while now; since before you were born, if I’m not mistaken. Robin: That’s a long time. Sidney: It sure is. Robin: It never really leaves though, does it? Not completely.
[Sidney hesitated briefly, surprised by the depth of Robin’s understanding]
Sidney: No, not really. Robin: Okay, thanks.
[Sidney yanked Robin back into the sand before he could run off]
Sidney: Don’t make me be the one to tell him about this-.. you talk to him, you hear me? Robin: I hear you… Sidney: You better! Don’t think I won’t make sure.
[Robin nodded, hastily escaping Sidney’s grasp, and her intensity. He had no choice now; if grandma Sid said she meant business, she damn well meant it]

Wyatt: You’re not staying here again tonight-.. in fact, I don’t even want you in this country. Kian: Wha-… [Kian spluttered over his tea for a moment before regaining his composure and setting it down] Kian: What on earth do you expect me to do? Wyatt: I really don’t care-.. whatever you were doing before you arrived? Kian: Well, I spent most of my probation languishing at the penthouse, but it didn’t feel right. [Wyatt squinted, perhaps Kian had learned something-..] Kian: You know, like it wouldn’t be the same until we got everyone back together-.. eh, almost everyone. Wyatt: [scoffs] That’s what you want to do? Kian: Don’t you? Wyatt: All that time wasting away in prison and you want to jump straight back into the lifestyle that led you there? Kian: We would’ve been just fine if it weren’t for that traitorous redhead… [Kian trailed off and held Wyatt’s gaze expectantly, as though it were a given that his brother would agree. Wyatt wondered if Kian had conveniently forgotten his own involvement in the downfall of their father-.. and Ashton’s, not that he really knew about that part, or whether he was too brain dead to have noticed amongst the chaos] Kian: Aren’t you tired of playing house out here? It’s all but forgotten, we could go back and-… Wyatt: You are not my family. Kian: But we’re brothers-.. you’re literally the only family I’ve got left. [Wyatt laughed dismissively; he could’ve vomited at the sight of Kian’s hurt expression] Wyatt: If you’re suddenly so compelled to act like my brother, then leave-.. get as far away from here as possible and don’t come back, and don’t you dare mention my whereabouts to anyone who bothers asking. Kian: Where do you suppose I ought to go from here then? Wyatt: Really? You finally have complete freedom and you’re asking me what to do with your life? Honestly, I’d love to suggest suicide but I doubt you’d have the wherewithal, nor the guts. Kian: There’s no need for that, my god-.. what’s the matter with you? Father would-… Wyatt: Father this, father that, he’s been dead for over a decade, Kian; get over it or go and fucking join him. [Kian scoffed, shaking his head with such similar derision to their father that Wyatt wanted to choke him senseless] Kian: I should’ve expected no less than your typical hostility-.. ten years and you haven’t changed a bit. Wyatt: That makes two of us. Kian: I suppose I’ll be the bigger man as usual and do as you’ve asked, shall I? Wyatt: [tightly] Mhm, do that. Kian: It’s a good job I didn’t finish unpacking. Wyatt: Perhaps you aren’t completely lacking in forethought after all. [Wyatt clenched his fist around the handle of his mug, fighting the urge to launch it at his brother’s giant, disgusting head-.. he definitely wasn’t worth the mess though, and the tea within was nowhere near hot enough to cause satisfactory damage]

Brodie: What the hell are you watching, Alex?! Alex: Uh.. cartoons? Brodie: [scoffs] Cartoons. Brodie: C’mere-.. I think we owe one another an apology. Alex: I’m withholding mine until further notice. Brodie: Right, well.. I’m sorry for yelling at you the other day, I was just worried. [Alex shrugged; she didn’t really care about her father’s apology, though she still appreciated it] Alex: Why do you think Robin hasn’t written back yet-.. do you think I finally got on his nerves? Brodie: You don’t get on anyone’s nerves. Alex: Not even yours? Brodie: Nope. Alex: But if it weren’t for me, momma would still-… Brodie: Don’t-.. don’t say that. Alex: I wish she were still here. Brodie: Me too, kiddo.

Oscar: He’ll be long gone. Courtney: I’m sure Leah-… Bruno: I can’t-.. not now.

Maybe I've mentioned it before, or maybe not... But I'd love to turn Somnium into a novel once I've finished, though I'm not so great at the whole prose thing. As an experiment, I decided to write up this scene between Oscar and Sidney. Take a gander below the cut if you fancy giving it a read!
Tumblr media
Oscar breathed a sigh of relief the second the door slammed shut behind him. Ivan and Tommy were taking the piss, but they were right; he hated hospitals. There was no particular reason, no past trauma, no horror story, just a heavy feeling that sat in his chest whenever he set foot in one. Huffing, he fumbled around in his pockets for a cigarette. He wasn’t fond of giving into his fears either, but the lack of alcohol in his system had put him on edge and he didn’t much feel like battling yet another war with his own mind right now. One cigarette, maybe two, then he’d go back upstairs.
The sound of a soft sob suddenly shattered Oscar’s endless rumination, it sounded oddly familiar… He poked his head out from his hiding spot, only to have his suspicions confirmed. Sidney. Sighing once more, Oscar left the shelter of the doorway and headed her way. He hovered in front of his mother, chunky boots shuffling awkwardly in the melting snow.
“Are you okay...?” he asked, tentatively.
Sidney jumped at the sound of her son’s voice, hastily attempting to compose herself as she wiped away her tears with the back of a cold hand.
“Oscar… You must be here to see your friend.”
“Mhm.”
“How is he?” she asked.
“Seems okay.”
He warily took a seat next to her as a heavy silence quickly fell between the two. As much as they fought, Oscar didn’t enjoy seeing his mother so upset. She wasn’t usually a crier.
“What’s wrong?”
Sidney seemed momentarily surprised by the question, though she shook it off and answered quietly “I… I lost a patient.”
“Oh.”
It was all he could muster. What were you supposed to say to that? Sorry? It sounded so fake and insincere. Before he could think of a better response, Sidney continued.
“You think you’d get used to it but I.. he was just a little boy. He had his whole life ahead of him and now…”
She stalled for a brief moment; face contorted with grief.
“His poor parents. It’s hard sometimes, to get their faces out of your head; or the sounds. Especially when-… Sorry.”
She cut herself off again, shaking her head. She’d said too much.
“It’s okay.” He muttered.
Oscar risked a sideways glance at his mother, immediately regretting it. He set his gaze toward his boots, trying his utmost not to tear up. He knew she was thinking about him, but he didn’t know what to say to comfort her, didn’t dare. It had been too long, there was too much unease, too much pain; wedged between them like a huge slab of ice. He wished there wasn’t, wished it would melt away as easily as the snow in the weak winter sunshine; but it didn’t work like that. After all this time, he’d have to make the first move… Except he couldn’t, not now. Instead, he stayed put, eyes fixed on the cigarette he twirled idly between his fingers. Sidney wasn’t oblivious to her son’s anguish, though seemed equally unwilling or unable to bridge the gap. She rose to her feet with a forced smile and a sniffle.
“I should go back in… I know you don’t like hospitals, but you should try and spend some time with your friend.”
Oscar nodded “I will.”
Something finally broke as she turned her back on him.
“Mum?”
Sidney froze. Oscar hadn’t called her that for well over a decade.
“Hm…?”
“I’m sure you did the best you could.”
“Thanks, honey…” she smiled, a real smile this time.
Oscar returned the smile and couldn’t help but feel a slither of hope rise up, something he hadn’t felt whilst looking at either one of his parents for a long while. Maybe they’d make amends eventually. It didn’t have to be today, but the fact the possibility remained was enough for the time being.
