NRC School Barrier, Chenya, Ghosts, and Grim

On today’s list of questions that no one asked about lmao, I’ve been wondering how the school barrier works. Specifically, WHO is allowed to enter, and WHY?

The school barrier is an invisible magical barrier that keeps out intruders, maintained 24/7 and only put down for events. It’s why outsiders in the Halloween events and for Spelldrive and the VDC competitions are allowed in. From Book 6, we now know that the barrier can be breached, and breaking it sounds akin to shattered glass. Technomatic weapons, perhaps? And in the Spectral Soirée event, the barrier can also be manipulated (with extremely powerful magic) to prevent the people inside from escaping, and stop time inside the barrier.

Who maintains it or how is unknown, I believe. I assume it’s from a magical item like a huge magestone, just because I don’t think it would be safe for the staff members to maintain such a large barrier 24/7.

Anyway, back to the real point -v- If the barrier is made to prevent intruders, how did Chenya and the Ghost Bride enter the school? And most importantly, how did Grim renter the school in the prologue?

It is uncertain if Chenya’s unique magic allows him to disappear/reappear at will, or just make parts of his body invisible. I’ve seen wikis and blogs claim both, and I don’t believe it’s ever fully explained in canon (is it explained in the novels? 👀). Somehow, Chenya can enter NRC despite being a RSA student.

It’s a similar case for the Ghost Bride and her retainers: they can just enter the school every year and stay at Ramshackle Dorm so Eliza can search for her perfect prince.

So what’s the deal here?? How can Chenya (a living person) and ghosts both be able to enter the campus?

All I can think of is that both characters lack a “corporeal body.”

Both Chenya and the ghosts have a soul, but depending on Chenya’s use of magic, neither have a physical body. If Chenya is staying very true to Disney’s Cheshire Cat, then he can make his body “intangible.” It’s not just invisibility- his body can not be touched. It literally does not physically exist for as long as he uses his magic.

With this pattern, I’m deducing that the barrier blocks out physical body, which is the typical case of an “intruder,” but when it comes to the nitpicky details like souls? Either it’s not possible, just way too specific, or simply not necessary. Ghosts don’t really cause any harm save for temporary paralyzing…which is bad but this is NRC we’re talking about -v- Chenya is just also has a very unique ability that seems to qualify as one of those rare for a Unique Magics that affect the users body, like Jack’s Unleash the Beast. It would be nearly impossible for any organization to account for ALL of the possible Unique Magic’s out there.

Case Solved…right? As the usual case with my theories, there answer is no ｡ﾟ(ﾟ´ω`ﾟ)ﾟ｡ Grim is causing all the trouble for me, which is entirely in character for him!!!

Grim was specifically ejected from the CAMPUS in the prologue. He was taken away with Riddle’s collar on, so he couldn’t use magic. While there is the possibility of Grim managing to slip out of the hands of the people taking him away, by the time he returned to Ramshackle dorm, Riddle’s collar was gone. Since it can only be removed with Riddle’s consent, I assume he was successfully taken out of campus.

So how did the little gremlin get back in??? And actually, how did Grim end up inside the NRC campus in the first place (when trying to steal the MCs uniform)?

Grim has a unique physiology, as he’s the magical fusion of an animal and a Direbeast. However, he does have corporeal body, unless the curse placed on him provides him with some loopholes. To be honest, I wonder if his abnormal high blot density is a part of this Σ(-᷅_-᷄๑) Can Overblot Monsters trespass the school barrier? Technically, they don’t have a body. Their “body” is just built up blot, which is the waste product of magic. Since I’ve been theorizing that Grim is a sealed Phantom, I think his ability to go through the school barrier is important 👀

Anyway, this was very random, but I’d appreciate any thoughts on the subject! I think it’s really easy to get excited and run with all the theories involving characters, but random things like the school barrier can easily get overlooked ∑(ﾟДﾟ)

Author's note: This was heavily inspired by the remarried empress with the implications of how Victoria was treated by her husband, the inclusion and mention of a concubine who's currently pregnant, etc.

This is my interpretation of how Heinrey asked Navier to remarry with him, but with Malleutoria :3

"I can't believe you'd do something so foolish…"

Victoria scowled, narrowing her eyes at the prince in front of her, with a large wound on his left forearm.

Malleus only bit his tongue, seething in pain."Would you- Stop doing that?" He demanded.

She rolled her eyes, holding the gold needle close to his face."Be lucky that it isn't made of silver, you stubborn prince. Besides, you shouldn't have dueled with my husband to begin with…"

"I did it to restore your honor."

"What honor did you have to restore? There was no need to do that for another man's wife."

He inhaled sharply but stared right at her.

"You were unhappy with how he flaunted his mistress. I was simply trying to help."

Victoria clicked her tongue."As the empress of the northern empire, you have no right to do such a thing as a foreign prince." She replied, close to finishing up the stitching of his wounds.

Malleus deadpanned at her and squinted his eyes."I have a right to restore a woman's honor if their husband impregnated another woman out of wedlock." He spat back.

After what seemed like an eternity, Victoria finished stitching his wound and glared at Malleus. And yet behind that glare was a woman in great pain from what her husband was putting her through.

"That woman is an official concubine. Her child may be illegitimate, but it will be the emperor's firstborn."

"Huh. You'd think that with someone like you around, the emperor would've had more than a dozen children." Malleus commented, putting his hand on her chin, which she quickly slapped away.

"Stop that. As the empress, I have no right to comment on what the emperor does with his mistress…" she trailed away, looking off to the side to frown, hoping that the fae prince wouldn't notice.

But he did. Much to her chagrin.

"My queen…."

"Don't. Just…. Don't call me that…"

She put the golden needle back into her sewing kit and crossed her arms. Refusing to meet his gaze.

Malleus's expression had softened. And his hand reached out as if to try and comfort her. To have her see him as someone she can use as a support system.

But he pulled his hand back, knowing that that was not what she wanted at the moment.

Several minutes had passed in that moment of silence, and Malleus couldn't help but be the one to break it.

"I…. I heard from lord Zenith."

Victoria winced, hoping that he isn't talking about what she thought he was talking about.

".... Heard what?"

"That his imperial majesty intends to divorce you."

She stood up, looking down at Malleus with one of the coldest stares she could muster up at that moment. The fire that came from the fireplace helped illuminate her aura, making her appear ethereal. Almost on the level of a deity.

".... My queen-"

"How dare you." She started, fists clenching in pent-up rage.

".... What?" His eyes went wide as he fell silent, allowing her to speak.

"How dare you make such…. Such an assumption. The emperor would- He would never dare divorce me! He…. He…"

She backed away, eyes stinging, likely on the brink of breaking down."He…. He wouldn't…" she muttered.

The way she said those words brought heartache to Malleus. And he quickly sprinted towards her when she fell to her knees with tears dripping down her face.

"He wouldn't… We…. We knew each other for so long…"

For a moment, Malleus hesitated to get closer to her. To touch her in her delicate silky nightgown with her hair in such an undone state.

But it didn't matter. Although he felt awkward, Malleus pulled the empress into a hug. Not too loose, but not too tight.

"It's… It's alright, my queen…"

Her head was resting on his shoulder, and he felt it quickly go damp. A sign that her tears were silent but prevalent.

"He's…. He's really going to divorce me for one woman… A woman he's known for a couple of months…"

Malleus clenched his jaw, feeling an even greater rage at the emperor for hurting a woman who didn't deserve it. His wife, nonetheless.

Which begged the question. Why did he hate this woman, when she didn't do anything to deserve such hatred?

Was it because she was the empress of a rival empire? Because her family was an enemy of his own?

Malleus didn't know. And he didn't want to know. At least not at that moment.

What was important to him was that the empress of the northern empire at least had a shoulder to cry on. To hell with the potentiality that someone could walk in on them in their warm embrace.

She pulled away, wiping away the snot from her nose and looking at the ground."His majesty… I overheard him telling that woman that he will divorce me… And make her his empress."

The shakiness and the sheer pain in just uttering such a simple sentence pained Malleus to no end. He cupped her face, and even he couldn't believe what he was going to say next.

"Then remarry with me."

Victoria's eyes went wide, and her mouth fell open for a while. Before she shook her head and pushed Malleus away from her in disbelief.

"Remarry? You know I can't do that. Much less to you."

"And why not? If the emperor of the northern empire can remarry with his concubine, surely the former empress can do the same."

"That's…. True, but I'll be looked down upon by my subjects. And they'll see me as a power-hungry woman who remarried a foreign prince because I couldn't handle being a divorced empress."

"Their opinions do not matter, my queen-"

"BUT THEY DO! THE PERCEPTION THE PEOPLE OF THE NORTHERN EMPIRE HAVE OF ME, REFLECTS ON HIS MAJESTY! THAT… THAT IS WHY I MUST STRIVE TO BE THE PERFECT EMPRESS."

Victoria stood up. But Malleus did just as quickly.

She breathed heavily, taking heavy breaths. In and out.

"My queen…."

"Why…"

Malleus pulled his hand back again, feeling conflicted and confused."What do you mean, my queen?" He asked, deep with concern.

Victoria looked to the side for a minute, before turning her attention back on Malleus.

"Why do you want me to marry you? You have nothing to gain by marrying a former empress."

Malleus crossed his arms, feeling awkward. But he answered her question either way. Not like he had a choice.

"You're… You're brilliant. You seemingly know everything when it comes to politics and you've brought down wars by negotiation alone. You're a brilliant empress, and would be given a warm welcome in the Briar valley."

She knew that wasn't the complete answer. It had to be.

"Tell me the truth."

"I am."

Victoria felt her nails sink into her skin while clenching her fists in frustration. It was a painful, yet masochistically euphoric kind of feeling.

"Just tell me. Before I use my ability on you."

"You wouldn't."

"I would."

Malleus scoffed, inching closer toward her. As if to try and challenge her to do it.

And she did.

She grabbed Malleus by his face and stared into his emerald eyes. Beautiful. Dangerous. Indescribable.

"Bless you, for speaking such truth. For your lies need to be revealed. Mirror mirror… Dispel their deceit."

After chanting the incantation, she took a deep breath before asking the question."Why do you wish for me to marry you?" She questioned, still staring deep into his eyes.

Almost instinctively, despite being deep in the effects of the incantation, Malleus pulled her closer to him before replying.

"Because I'm enchanted by you, my queen. And I'd like nothing more… Then to become your husband."

The effects of the incantation fell apart, and Malleus was back to his senses. Now finding himself holding Victoria, the empress of the northern empire, by her hips. And she was holding him by his face.

Her eyes were glass at that moment. She appeared shocked. Ghost-like.

But that didn't stop Malleus from finding her beautiful. More beautiful than any woman he's seen.

"You… Love me?"

A smile graced his face, holding one of her hands that was still cupping his face. Her eyes slowly returned from a haunting glass-like state, and back to the sapphire ones he had come to adore.

"I do… And it doesn't matter if our marriage was one of convenience."

He went on one knee and kissed her hand.

"... Because I'll find my way into your heart. One way or another. And I'll make sure you will be loved. More than what your husband could ever give you."

Victoria pursed her lips, tugging them and having them form a straight line. She didn't know what to say.

But she managed to utter the words, "Do you truly want me as your queen?" As she stared at him.

And when Malleus nodded slowly, Victoria had him stand up.

And she leaned her forehead against his own.

"Then I will become your queen."

It was out of convenience, yes. That was true.

But that didn't matter to Malleus. Nor did it matter to Victoria.

Because she knew he'd love her more than her husband could. To hell with that wretched man.

She'll be able to find her happiness now. Without anyone trying to take it from her.

"Oh!"

The two immediately pulled away when they caught sight of Ellis opening the door.

"Ah- Lady Ellis…" Victoria gave her an awkward nod of acknowledgment before looking away in embarrassment.

Malleus coughed awkwardly and quickly approached her.

"Why…. Are you awake at this hour?"

Ellis gave him a smirk."I could ask you the same thing, y'know." She joked, crossing her arms playfully.

He chuckled, gently patting her head. Before Ellis batted her eyelashes.

"Looks like you'll be a married man. Lucky you~" she teased, noticing his cheeks and the tips of his ears go warm.

"Stop that…"

"Not gonna. Not unless you invite me as the maid of honor!"

"Ellis-"

"Oh god…"

"You're not gonna hear the end of it, Malleus. Hehehe…"

The Legend of the Prefect of NRC

Legend has it there was once a Prefect at NRC.

The Prefect appeared one day with chaos at their heels.

Not much is known about them as an individual, but they are known for their achievements.

They stopped great calamities that befell the Island of Sage.

At times, even stopped Twisted Wonderland from unraveling.

Not much is known about what happened to them.

Some say they returned from whence they came.

Some say they chose to stay.

Some say they even found romance or traveled the world.

But there is one aspect everyone agrees on.

They were cherished by all who knew them.

And they, in return, loved them just as much.

It is no wonder the Great Seven became the Great Eight in homage to the Prefect and those who lived in Ramshackle Dorm.

A statue of three ghosts, a chimera, and a hooded figure made of marble commemorates the newly established dorm at the Main Street of NRC.

Now you may wonder, what does this dorm represent?

It is based on the spirit of the Prefect of Legend, the one known to tame even the mightiest.

The Ramshackle Dorm is for those who do not belong. Those who have the potential for greatness beyond any normal means.

Now take the hand before you, for you have been chosen.

The Ramshackle Dorm welcomes you.

Random thoughts while reading Book 7 that have absolutely nothing to do with the plot. But if I was Yuu, I would absolutely cut through these trees and straight to mainstreet. The map makes it look like it's not that rocky and any ledges are not big. It looks walk able to me.

Because the other alternative is for Yuu to walk ALL OF THIS a couple times every day.

Granted, the campus may not actually be as big as the map makes it seem. But even so, I'm not doing all that.
