Lunch Date

Characters: Arunae, Fledge

Word Count: 1,505

Context: Arunae and Fledge are somewhat recent defects of the Alternian fleet. They currently reside on a neutral space station known as Parable that orbits the star Paem.

There are three star systems within a standard jump from Paem. Most cruisers were only capable of a single jump before needing to recharge; the power to do so was reserved in a bank intended for emergencies. Charging the reserves for a jump was nearly as expensive as the ship itself, and most batteries would lose their capacitance after a single discharge of that magnitude, necessitating replacement. It was unfortunately true: no battery worked as well as a helmsman. It would cost fortunes to consistently travel by cruiser only using batteries, and inviting a stranger to join a party of two was, to Fledge, just as costly.

It was good, then, that she could power jumps without either. It was equally good that Arunae wasn’t privy to, nor particularly interested in, the specificities of space travel mechanics. She knew how to independently gimbal the rear thrusters to donut tightly enough around the spires of Parable to make Fledge forget for brief moments that she had ever been anywhere else, and that was plenty. So long as neither of them ever discussed the specifics of their travel, it would stay that way.

Every so often they stole away to a colony for a few days. This perigee, it was Thalamos-7. The planet had established itself within the empire long ago through mining. Between the sparse new-looking towns were mining camps, and between those were swaths of land peeled back to expose the shells of the planet's long scooped-out insides, now scattered throughout the galaxy. The canyons revealed labyrinths of caves containing reserves of the planet's remaining clean water. In the past few centuries the local population had been making an effort to restore the landscape and reestablish the colony as a place with a viable future, rather than a husk to discard. Land that could not be repaired would become civil developments.

The efforts seemed to be moving along well, all things considered. The brochures and websites Fledge and Arunae had poked through seemed to think so; they touted newly lush rolling hills, and exotic fauna and flora carefully selected to remake its home within gashes left by the empire. Their website described its vistas as unique and speaking. The greenery crawling over the rough but methodically slashed crevices demonstrated en large “the same sublime perseverance of a scar.”

It wasn’t the sort of poetry Fledge cared for. The beauty lines that wrapped their way around downtown were convincing enough for her.

The cafe she and Arunae sat outside now was called “The Copper Street Mealblock”. A short menu existed only on the inside walls in neat chalk handwriting. There were potted plants in the windows, and the brightly colored chairs were comfortable despite how they looked. The food came out in plastic baskets lined with brown paper. After lunch they were going to take a ride beyond the town to see if the photographs were being generous.

“Kind of hoping they’re overselling it; I’d love to dig Runner’s fins into the side of a quarry. Bet it’d be like a huge skatepark.” Arunae had already annihilated a sandwich and was picking away at her side.

Fledge snorted at the idea as she moved a fork through her salad. “Couldn’t we do that on any moon?”

“Sure, but no moon is within ten minutes of a place with fries like these.” Arunae waved around an example before violently sacrificing it to her maw to join nearly a full basket of its brethren.

“I told you to get a large.”

“And you were so right.” She shook her head solemnly, and Fledge tilted hers in sympathy.

The teal swung her clawed arm over her chair and gazed out at the street. “Imagine living here, though, in one of these little town-hive apartments, coming down to a cafe for breakfast and then, I dunno, going spelunking.”

Fledge raised an eyebrow. “You want to go spelunking?”

“Maybe! I’ve never been. But we could, and that’s what matters. What else was it they had here?” She patted herself for a pamphlet she quickly realized she left in the ship. “Base jumping? Sky diving? Shit, we could watch a movie. A new one, even. In a movie theater.”

“Not sure I could handle that kind of excitement,” Fledge joked.

“It’ll be a far cry from my tablet and your little med-bay bunk, but I think you could handle it.”

The cerulean flashed a smile. Arunae consumed another fry.

“Seriously though, what do you think?”

“About going to the movies?”

“No, about moving here, living here.”

“You make every place we go sound nice.” Fledge’s fork played with a little tomato.

“Any of them stand out, though?”

Fledge shrugged her shoulders.

“Maybe we could take a lease out somewhere. Try living on a planet for more than a week. See what it actually feels like, y’know?”

“Maybe.” Fledge’s fork poked through the tomato.

“I know you don’t expect us to stay on Parable forever.”

“No.” She turned the tomato on her plate. “Of course not.” she added.

“So?”

“So--” she set the fork down and crossed her arms over her chest. “-- we’re both defects. I don’t know.” She let out a breath. “I feel like it’s kind of risky to settle down anywhere, especially somewhere that’s Empire controlled, even a small colony like this one.”

“I’ve been thinking about that, actually.”

“What do you mean?”

“About them finding us.”

Fledge glanced down at the table.

“It’s been six perigees, right?” Arunae began to explain, “Parable is safe, sure, but it’s not secret. Six perigees, and not a whiff of the fleet?” She gesticulated with a fry. “I honestly don’t think they’re looking for us. I wouldn’t be surprised, either; I mean, me, I’m half metal, half liability and you--”

Fledge’s eyes shot up at her. Arunae was still finding her words.

“--Well, we know they didn’t treat you right.”

Fledge sank again, and stayed quiet.

Arunae tightened her lips. Seated across the table from her, Arunae saw herself: fickle and afraid, single tethered and constantly gauging the ropes girth. She grabbed at her memory for Cyther’s words; what would she have said? She always seemed so sure. She could spin ideas into action like threads through a spindle and sweep Arunae up with her. It seemed so stupid, mulling over townhives when Cyther was planning raids in a night.

Was it possible Cyther wasn’t sure back then? Perhaps she had convinced Arunae in order to convince herself. Maybe she had just gotten good at it, and Arunae got better at agreeing, until Cyther didn’t need her to anymore.

Arunae didn’t want to pretend. She wasn’t sure the fleet wasn’t looking for them, and gauging what felt like home wasn’t really in her repertoire. However Fledge was feeling, she clearly wasn’t keen to make another life changing decision anytime soon. Maybe leaving that day was all she had in her, and Arunae couldn’t argue with that.

What was it that had let Arunae go, the day she left for the fleet? The day she told Cyther she was leaving? Had she truly believed she could make a change from within the fleet? Fuck, she wanted it back. Whatever it was, she wanted it back. She wanted to take Fledge’s hand and lead her somewhere beautiful, unafraid for her, gesture out to the world and tell her “Isn’t this great? We could be happy here.” She wanted to mean it. She couldn’t.

“Could we not talk about this in public,” Fledge finally peeped. “It makes me nervous.”

“Oh, yeah,” Arunae accepted Fledge’s request to cut the conversation short. She ate her last fry and sat at the impasse she had created.

“I know—” Fledge piped up again, “—we have to talk about it. I know we can’t be there forever. We’ll talk about it, I promise. I just need to think.”

“It’s cool. It’s not like we have to decide now.”

Fledge nodded and stared out into the street.

After a moment, Arunae reached her hand across the table to hold Fledge’s.

“I have a different important question to ask you.”

“What?” she looked to her.

Arunae met her gaze and squeezed her hand gently.

“Can I have some of your fries?”

Fledge snorted. She took her hand back to nudge her basket towards the other. “Go crazy.”

As she watched her dear friend make fries disappear with feverish abandon, Fledge’s mind swam with thoughts. Was it really possible that the fleet wasn’t looking for her? Why wouldn’t they be? Was she would be too much trouble? For the first perigee on Parable she couldn’t sleep. She had spent days awake, watching the door of the apartment, waiting for a fleet official to come busting through to take her back. She thought the weight in her stomach during those hours was fear, but now, she wasn’t so sure. This, the concept that no one was ever going to come for her, that no one was even looking, stirred her insides. It was much more terrifying.

LITERALLY THO like i hate how tfa bumblebee is reduced to a “so random! 😝🤪” only silly idiot prankster kinda guy when like. He’s smart! He’s caring! Yes he can be silly and yes he can be a bit reckless but he loves his friends and he can figure out how to care for them (like where he and bulk are comforting sari 🥺) and also figure out the best strategy to defeat whatever villain of the week is there! TFA bee means so much to me and i am also so excited for earthspark. Continuities where bumblebee is not the kid appeal character my beloves

LICHERALLY !!!! Like I love Bumblebees silly fun nature thats why he's one of my favorites ever, BUT IT DOESNT MEAN he can't be more than that.

Tfa in particular bothers me bc like. It's my fav bumblebee bc he has more bite and spunk (due to being based more on hot shot), but then. They never. Truly take him as seriously as other characters (except maybe bulk but that's bc hes also not taken seriously,)

which is so absurd bc he has some Legit shit going on with him that should fuck him up!! His whole career, his dreams, got flushed down the toilet bc he was unfortunate to have an instructor that doesn't like him and doesn't give him a chance (except when he did 1 singular time and then he immediately sent him to space repair duty for doing the noble thing and taking the fall for bulkhead)

And he doesn't get over this. He is still depressed about it when he says to Longarm "at least one of us achieved their dreams" in like the saddest tone ever (I think it's literally the saddest line delivery bee gives in the entire show) and he talks abt how no one believed he would amount to anything in the trial of megs script reading.

I'd argue his general behavior reflects this too (though idk how intentional it was), bc hes always like attention seeking- approval seeking. He wants to appear to Earth like he's a hero so he can feel successful (and that still went down the drain bc the humans started hating the autobots later)

But do they ever take time to address this issue and sympathize with him? No <3 instead they act like bee has no issues at all, to the point it's like "wasp is suffering so much, bumblebee wtf is wrong with you. YOU CANNOT RELATE TO LOSING EVERYTHING you just can't. nothing bad has ever happened to you. Go play videogames you stupid motherfucker" not that wasp isn't suffering but cmon. don't act like bee didnt have his entire career fucked over like it's not a serious thing

Not to mention as you said he has multitudes to him, he's caring and compassionate! He's quick witted and has lots of skill! He's not just a bumbling fool- Sentinel is wrong about that! (His assessment of ppl is not rlly accurate at all btw, he called bulkhead "bulk and no brains" when that guy is literally the leading expert on space bridge tech)

I am rlly excited to see earthspark bee bc its like. I think he's going to have the same kind of wise-cracking spunk tfa bee has BUT he is in a mentor role now. So there's a good chance he won't be reduced to being a silly jokester, bc he has to have some seriousness to teach (and thus the writers will treat him more seriously) also there's already those earth bots that are probably going to fill up that kid appeal role anyway

tldr: I love tfa bee's personality but I think his writing is lacking bc it doesn't take him as seriously as other characters, and I hope earthspark bee takes what's good abt tfa bee but gets better treatment from the writers

wonwoo: he’s all smiles for you hehe. clings onto your arm whenever you’re near him. he wouldn't be too loud or anything, but i think he'd shyly whisper compliments to you now and then about how you look nice or how much he loves you. i think he’d be one of the more chill people, he just feels happier than usual bc of the alcohol hehehhe. usually, wonu is pretty good at keeping himself composed when you show him affection. but when he’s drunk, i think he’d react a little more…he strikes me as someone who’s more verbally/physically affectionate when it’s just you two, but around friends/family he tones it down. but when he’s drunk i think he would be comfortable having you sit on his lap or having an arm around you <3

jihoon: i am convinced lee jihoon is a different man when he’s drunk!!!!!!!!! i have a hot-ish take when it comes to drunk uji…omg woozi would SOOOO open up physically and emotionally to you..and he’d be the type to always, Always have an arm around your waist and constantly hold your hand, looking at you with a smile that leads all the way up to his eyes. he’s someone who has dealt with a lot in his life, but in this moment, he’s so grateful to be here with his friends, and someone he loves that also loves him for who he is. the reason i think he’d be like this is juts because like. he doesn’t drink much, but when he does, feelings he’s been keeping to himself finally come up to the surface. also his face, neck and ears are constantly bright red because of the alcohol LOL. but ALSO they'd be red the next day when he realizes how he behaved in front of you hehe…. don't tease him too much about it or he'll die of embarrassment!

seokmin: dont ask me why bc idk but i think he would ruffle your hair constantly because youre so cute. then he would get distracted and talk to the bros for a bit, look at you again and remember how cute you are and ruffle it again sorry i dont make the rules!!!!!!! dk is definitely the loud/funny drunk hehe…hes the type to be giggly/try to make everyone laugh :) but i think he’d definitely try to make you laugh the most !! mostly in terms of physical affection though, i think he’d just dote on you a lot…like you know in the dingo video how he kept kissing woozi??? yeah he does that to you. along with the hair ruffles. and the attempts to get you to laugh. good luck. you’re going to drown in affection from this man LOL.

vernon: HE WILL CARE YOU this man is all vibes. he’s just here to have a good time lol. you’ll probably be the drunk one who needs to be taken care of :3 but if he was somehow convinced to get really drunk, i think he would still just be vibes. but happier vibes. i think he would just laugh at everything and keep a hand constantly on your knee heheh. also i think he would encourage seungkwan’s antics more when he’s drunk i’m just saying .

minghao: minghao is just relishing in the moment of enjoying his time with his friends and partner~ he doesn't strike me as someone who drinks much, kinda like vernon. he'd be more focused on having a good time with everyone! i think he's the type to have hangover remedies ready for you at home for the next day. i think he would also be the type of bf to know when to cut you off LMAO like “y/n’s had 4 shots….hyung STOP pouring them another one!!!!!!!!” he just seems like he'd be prepared to take care of his partner :) you're so lucky!! he’s also the type to observe you and take pictures/videos if you’re doing something funny while you’re drunk LMAO!!!!

joshua: josh is a giggly drunk i have no doubts. also in the dingo video that man was RED af!!! would probably be like “im fine im SO SOBER RIGHT NOW…BABE TELL THEM HOW SOBER I AM!!!” he is not sober. i also think he would be the type to compare hands with you LMAO. you’re just like ???? you know how big both our hands are???? you’re literally my bf???? and hes like I JUST WANTED TO CHECK OK!!! tbh he seems so fun to be around LMAO like he on the way to the hangout hes like “babe lets match each other if u drink i drink” and ur like HELLO SIR???????? HE would be the one to ask you to do aegyo or something and when you do he just dies of cuteness lmao. i think he would also tease you in silly ways, like convincing you that he and s.coups are actually long lost brothers who found each other in college, or that seungkwan is a natural blonde. and of course you believe him which is the funniest shit ever to him!!!! LMAO!!!!! your shock and wonder at his blatant lies is the cutest thing to him. don’t worry tho he’ll tell you the next day nothing he said was true, except for when he said he loves you :)

SO I JUST SAW FALSETTOS LIVE FOR THE FIRST TIME

So firstly I of course have to say this musical is fucking phenomenal and if u havent seen it even on youtube you HAVE to. onne of the best musicals ever wrutten. ignore any typos in this my hands r still shaking and im not editing htis. OKAY.

The actors. It was a college level production but the actors were so so talented. My favorite performances were from Mendel and Jason, who both pulled off their roles INCREDIBLY. Mendel was like a carbon copy of Brandon Uranowitz he had his mannerisms DOWN. All the nervous ticks, touching his face, being generally so awkward all the time, even his face was just perfec t for the role. And Jason was played by an adult femme-presenting person but they were so good as him!!!!! their voice fit him perfectly and she also perfectly encompassed Jason;s awkward childlike nature. The entire cast was incredible but those two really stood out to me!!!! Everyone's singing voices as well were fantastic, especially Trina's—she KILLED the high notes and even sung up the octave on a few lines !!!! including the "but still the bastard divorced me" and she still belted the "you must exorcise a devil" even AFTER Im Breaking Down. In fucking sane.

THAT BEING SAID THOUGH. Even though i enjouyed every second of it I do wanna make some more analysis-related directing critiques because im fucked up and evil about this show . im so sorry just let me speak here meaout. Stating right now though I've only seen the 2016 revival (about 2 dozen times) and not the original 90's version (been meaning to watch it just havent gotten the chance) so i reserve all TRUE judgement until after I see it!!! maybe some of these choices were in the original but tbh if they were i still like how the revival did it better. okay i swear im not just one of those ppl who is like "tHaTS noT hOw ThEY dId iT On BroADwAy" calm down. thanks <3

First of all. Some of the scenes lacked energy !!!!! Thrill of first love had no homoerotic choreography!!!!! they just kinda sat there on the couch looking morose and barely looking at each other as if they truly just hate each other and feel ANYthing towards each other anymore at all. But thats not the point!!!!!! They dont fully hate each other theyre just lacking the excitement that they once had and it's been replaced with nothing but disagreements and sex. When Whizzer and Marvin do their gay little dance theyre not just dancing and being gross and sexual theyre also FIGHTING!!!! they still care about each other they just dont know how to act!!!! and marvin's a bitch of course. Marvin was still very much a bitch. But because of the lack of energy in this song there was a bit of a lack of chemistry between the two as well, which carried through the whole show. I feel like it's important to see just how gross fucked up n nasty these two are about each other to see how its truly affecting the other people in Marvin's life. Even their chemistry during the chess game was lacking. They just kinda felt like they really hated each other. Which isnt the pointtttttt. Guh

Trina (or the directors idk) also made some choices I wasn't 100% on board with but they were more subtle. Mostly in her tone about Mendel. Up through Please Come To Our House she seemed to really really like Mendel. Like it was clear she was attempting to woo him. But then when he was proposing, and when they were maknig their home together, she just seemed. Unenthused. I know Trina truly doesn't really love her life, and just needs the stability of a nuclear family, but it was odd to see her not even attempt to keep up the facade on her own. Her and Mendel were similarly lacking in a lot of chemistry because of this, which, maybe to some of you makes sense but to me i do want to see them be close even if Mendel isn't absolutely the best.

LAST CRITIQUE OKAY. This one is BIG SPOILERS if u havent seen it yet but probably if ur reading this far youve already seen it okay. The fuckign bar mitzvah!!!!! There was no acknowledgement from Whizzer to Jason as he was reading his Torah !!!!!!! He just layed there in the hospital bed, facing AWAY from the audience so we could only see the very top of his head (which was on purpose for a quick change but) and he didnt get up at all to thank Jason or even acknowledge him :( for all the audience knows maybe he didnt even see Jason get bar mitzvahd. screaming crying throwing up.

OKAY IM DONE W BEING MEAN HERES A BIG CHANGE I REALLY LOVED !!!!!! as well as some smaller changes that i also really liked or were jsut neutral things i noticed

For most of act 2, up until Days Like This, They had this really cool circus imagery? Now once again idk if this is in the OG, but they had a picture of each cluster of characters set up on either side of the stage, and each of them was doing some sort of circus act both in the pictures and on stage, especially during A Day in Falsettoland. When a character was having their point in the song, they'd sometimes cut the lights briefly and suddenly the characters would be struggling to perform their little circus act, and each of them had a differnt one respectively and they all represented their immaturities/flaws/struggles:

Jason was on stilts, representing his need to grow up and perhaps his perceived mental maturity compared to the other characters

Trina was balancing/spinning plates on sticks, representing her need to keep balance and order in her life

Marvin + Whizzer were fencers because of their lingering animosity, yet newfound respect, for one another. Fencing isnt a dangerous sport, like you dont actually hurt your opponent in it, but it;s still a fight and youre still pointoing a weapon at them. guh. (AND BTW they did this during the racquetball scene and HOLY SHIT. I just gotta describe this one. Racquetball number 1 They had their little racquets as they were singing to each other but then when they got really into the game the lights would cut and then theyd be FENCING each other instead!!!!! and then the lights would cut again and itd go back to racquetball!!!! BUT THEN in the racquetball number 2 when it cut to them fencing ONLY MARVIN HAD A SWORD. WHIZZER STILL HAD HIS RACQUET. GIUUHUHGGHGHGHGHGH.;..,.,/;;'.';.;'[[[.)

Then the lesbians from next door were like a duo balancing/acrobatics act where they were always leaning on each other and picking each other up which was cute but also like. Charlotte would start falling in one direction and Cordelia would have to scrambke to catch her. I always hail them as the healthiest couple in the show but sometimes i forget they have problems too, like Cordelia;s insecurity and Charlotte's stress over the virus of course.

And finally Mendel!!!! was the fucking ringmaster!!!!! He had a hoop and a top hat and every time he was trying to calm down Jason (Everyone Hates His Parents), or Caroline, or Trina (A Day in Falsettoland), he would appear with his hoop and top hat, to show that HE is the one who needs to "control" other people's lives, or at least he feels the need to direct them. Mendel of course needs to feel like he's smarter than everyone else and like he's the only one who can help people. It really drove that home and it was an insane realization to come to. Phenomenal directing choice idk who came up with that but. bravissimo to you

Now miscellaneous stuff i liked or noticed!!!

They didn't have the big ol foam block. just some couch ends that they moved around to be diff pieces of furniture. If you've ever seen Waiting In The Wings' analysis on falsettos you might have seen a comment in the youtube section discussing how in the set design for the revival, the lack of real furniture through most of the show represents the lack of maturity of the characters, and as things get serious for them, more real props and set pieces get added. Like the chess board, the decor for Mendel + Trina's home, Whizzer's suitcase, the whole hospital room, etc. They didn't lean into that with this but i think that's fine! its not a necessary detail in my opinion and they did their best with what they had!!

Marvin didn't hand whizzer the suitcase after the chess game. He just grabbed it, and packed it himself. I was waiting for him to slam it into whizzer's chest or something. but no. Whizzer just picked it up and walked off. okay. Neutral bad change imo

Marvin's performances of What would I do and What more can i Say were. Breathtaking. Marvin actor if you're out there reading this your voice is lovely and carries so much emotion in your solo numbers. I Did Cry. a little bit

After what felt like an eternity, you got woken up by your fake boyfriend’s hand over your eyes.

“Hold on to my arms while I close your eyes. It has to be a surprise!!” You were tired of Satoru’s antics but he brought you out when you were feeling down so who were you to complain?

The sounds of the rowdy streets freaked you a little — you still had your eyes closed. But Satoru’s gentle touch on your skin grounded you. — You felt safe with him.

“OKAY! I’M RELEASING MY HANDS IN 3..2..1!” He finally let go of his hands that were previously resting on your eyes, but his eyes never left yours.

You had to adjust the sight before you. When you realize where he took you, you jump into his arms, thanking and kissing every part of his face.

He never expected that reaction out of you, but did he mind? Not a bit! His bestfriend No, his crush! Was kissing him! He was beyond the moon. Everyone around you could see the love he had for you in his eyes.

dating sean diaz hcs!!

first of all. he is so Comfy like.. when you both hang out hes always in a freshly washed, soft cotton shirt and shorts (basically how he looks at his grandparents house in ep2) .. fluffy socks too for sure and he always smells SO good like laundry detergent but also a hint of cologne😭 he wants you to be super comfortable as well so u probably show up to the diaz house in pyjamas

sean loves to cook or bake with you .. i think it’d be a little competition of who makes the nicest food. i think sean wld be a good cook but a HORRIBLEE baker!!😭 measurements are all wrong, cakes either rise too much or too little, and he manages to burn whatever he makes every time lmaoo. so even though he knows he’ll lose at baking, he does it anyway just to see you win.

movie marathons are a MUST in ur relationship!! u have an extremely long notes list w all the movies u guys have to see and u watch one every friday after school. daniel occasionally adds cartoons to the list🫶

as much as he finds daniel annoying (and realistically daniel is ALWAYSS gonna be hovering around yall a little bit) he wants you to like daniel because he loves daniel more than anything (even though sean before the events of ep1 rarely shows it) he cant be in a relationship with someone that doesnt love daniel, its definitely an ick for him when other people call daniel annoying. sean can insult daniel but nobody else can!!!

esteban is definitely a leave the door a few inches open kinda dad😭 fine with you guys staying in seans room but doesnt wanna give you guys too much freedom. he’d definitely trust and love whoever seans with and accept them as part of his family <3

okay hear me out ,, sean likes to match outfits but NOOTT in a cringe way more in like a subtle, ‘it’ couple way. like yall will have the same hoodie but he’ll have it in black and you’ll have it in white.

sean likes pretty laidback displays of affection. maybe a hand around ur shoulder or interlocking pinkies .. nothing too over the top, but always some form of physical contact to remind you of his presence!

you’ve definitely washed and styled his hair a couple times and sean absolutely ADORES the feeling of ur fingers running through his hair… he always shyly asks if you could scratch his scalp a bit and you always always do! if he has the superior sean haircut in ep3 where its grown out, you definitely brush and blowdry it to make sure it looks good

sean always has music playing in the back when ur in his room 100%. u guys probably have countless collaborative spotify playlists (i personally think sean is a frank ocean enthusiast) he associates so many different songs with you and loves making new memories attached to good songs

sean draws candid portraits of you like all the time. he just thinks you look so beautiful when you’re focused on a movie or immersed in a book or intensely trying to finish your homework. you always kind of notice he’s drawing you after a while, but dont want him to get self conscious so you pretend you have no clue

The morning streets of New York were alive with activity as you hawked newspapers, calling out the headlines that were half true (a skill jack had taught you). It was a routine you had grown accustomed to, weaving through the crowds with practiced ease as you sold papers to passersby. But this day, your usual routine was disrupted by a group of boys who approached you with sneers on their faces and mockery in their eyes. They were not newsies, that much was clear, and their intentions were anything but friendly.

“Is that a girl or a boy, I can’t tell,” one of the boys jeered.

“Lift up her skirt and find out, moron,” another chimed in, punching his friends arm. You tried to ignore them, focusing on the task at hand, but the boys weren't finished yet. Before you could react, one of them lunged forward, snatching the papers from your hands, pulling them away from you. Your heart pounded in your chest as you watched helplessly, your voice rising in desperation as you pleaded for them to give them back. But your cries fell on deaf ears, drowned out by the raucous laughter of the boys as they taunted you mercilessly.

“What do you think you're doing?” You looked up to see a familiar face standing behind the boys, his posture tense and his eyes glaring with seriousness. Without hesitation, he reached out and grabbed the ringleader by the back of his neck, pulling him backwards, forcing him to drop the stolen papers. You scrambled to gather the papers, your hands trembling with relief. You stole a glance at Jack, who was standing protectively in front of you, his jaw clenched.

“Leave her alone,” Jack growled. “Now.”

The boys exchanged nervous glances, but their bravado remained intact.

“Aw, look, she's got her little boyfriend to come save her,” one of them sneered, earning a growl of frustration from Jack. Without warning, he took a step forward, throwing a well-timed punch to one the boy’s stomach. “You heard me,” Jack spat.

The boys hesitated for a moment, holding their friend who had recoiled back into them, sizing up Jack's steely resolve, before finally backing away, their taunts turning to nervous laughter as they retreated down the street.

As they disappeared into the crowd, you let out a shaky breath, your hands still trembling with adrenaline. You looked up at Jack, your eyes filled with gratitude.

“Thank you,” you whispered, your voice barely above a whisper. Jack turned to you, his gaze softening as he reached out to pull you into a comforting embrace. “I ain’t ever gonna let you get hurt,” he murmured, holding you close as you buried your face in his chest.

“Why don’t we finish today’s papes together, huh?” he suggested.

You nodded into his chest. “Yes, please,” you mumbled, feeling safe in Jack’s arms. The pair of you soon got back to handing out papers, impressed with yourselves at how much quicker than usual it was when you worked together. You found out later on, that Jack had told all the other boys to take it in turns checking up on you in the future, he knew he’d pissed off those boys, and was sure it wouldn’t be the last time they hung around.
