on the closure of MochaJump, and why we're our own worst enemies in this industry.
"MochaJump? What was that?" is probably your first question, and I'm gonna simply respond with, "Exactly."
MochaJump was a small startup platform made by /u/nunojay2 and a second site engineer (whose name I am not informed of) on reddit. It wasn't anything extraordinary, just a startup site that aimed to offer a more viable alternative to Webtoons and Tapas, with a focus on offering equal visibility to creators, focused recommendation algorithms, loosened restrictions on NSFW content, and bigger cuts for creators on their generated revenue.
Of course, such promises are a tall order, but the creator did their best to host regular discussions with creators in art and webtoon communities to get feedback on what creators really wanted out of their platforms, and they researched what they would need to make in order to keep the site afloat (it came out pretty low at $2 per user per month). Hopes were high and the site launched with a small but eager userbase.
It stayed small. The site shut down in November 2022, just 6 months after launching in May 2022.
Now, I'm not gonna sit here on some soapbox and blame anyone for the site closing down. I unfortunately didn't get much chance to use the site myself so there's surely more I could have done on my own part to help it gain traction. But this is a regular occurrence for start-ups like this, especially in an industry that's as notoriously unprofitable as webcomics. We've seen titans such as SmackJeeves and Inkblazers fall, and MochaJump was merely an infant by comparison.
But it makes me think of how we view and treat these startups as a whole. How we as readers and creators alike have become so trained to exclusively use corporate platforms like Webtoons and Tapas on the promise of "bigger gains". Unlike these bigger companies, platforms like MochaJump depend on building a strong userbase as quickly as possible, and need to find ways to generate revenue to keep things running, otherwise it's only a matter of time before they close down. They don't have a massive conglomerate like Naver or Kakao to pad their pockets through their failures. They don't have the money or reach to inject themselves into society through bus terminal ads and convention sponsorships. They don't have the investors to sink money into their platform until it becomes profitable in return.
So we don't use them. Readers don't use them because we don't see the point in using a platform that has no content... and thus creators don't use them because we don't see the point in publishing our content on a platform with no userbase. Creators seek a place that's "tight knit" and "easy to get seen", but will only post to places that come pre-loaded with massive audiences; because it's not enough anymore to have a couple hundred followers, we're in 2023 now, in the year of consumer bloat, where we expect to now pull in thousands if not millions to be considered a "success". And readers seek a place that offers high-quality high-amount content at the tip of their fingertips, but don't want to pay for the access to these works, and in the case of apps like WT, have given up in trying to support these creators through the platforms themselves because they know that those artists they want to support will likely never see a dime.
The fact of this problem is simple, yet many people seem to ignore it - we cannot expect to have a platform that is tight knit, profitable, and sustainable. These places do not exist, not so long as we continue to raise the bar on what makes a "successful" subscriber count, not so long as we continue to patronize platforms that exploit their artists and writers, and not so long as we keep chasing the dragon of "what these websites used to be". These platforms never used to 'be' anything, they merely existed in one point of time that is now long gone, when owning a smartphone was a luxury and not a need, when online video content wasn't being tethered together by ads, and when the Internet wasn't owned and entirely managed by the same three corporations, the likes of which we haven't seen since cable TV.
Platforms like Tapas and Webtoons are - besides unsustainable - unable to exist and profit in the way they do without undercutting someone along the way. Whether it's underpaying their creators, undercutting their communities, or underexposing the works that have been buried, someone will get the shit hand in the deal and that someone is usually ALWAYS someone who will rarely ever stand to gain anything in the long run from using these platforms despite their issues. The 1% got theirs, and the 10% are barely getting by, while the remaining 89% are pushing onwards, because they have faith in the systemic online enshittification that demands conformity to a single formula for "success".
We are our own worst enemies in this industry. Webcomics are one of the few online mediums that still truly belong to the people - anyone can make them, anyone can find joy in them, but we're letting platforms like Webtoons and Tapas and all the other massive corporate apps rob us of that joy and accessibility in the pursuit of "success" and profiting. Webtoons was never the sole way to profit off this medium and yet I still see people every day who underestimate the existence of legitimate publishing houses and self-publishing, who think that publishing on Webtoons and landing an Originals deal is the only way to find success in this industry. This is meant to be the era of creators, of self-starting and self-actualization, and yet we're still handing all of that control over to corporations that only seek to exploit our art, bodies, and labor, while convincing ourselves that this will somehow all be worth it. We stick with Webtoons, despite the numerous controversies it's been involved in and the lack of support it's given even its own hired creators. We stick with Tapas, despite the undercutting of its most core components such as its community and the outlier genres it used to be known for hosting. We find new ways to justify using platforms that are steadily going downhill - Patreon, Twitter/X, Youtube, Instagram, Facebook - because we've been convinced that these are the routes to success, so if we acknowledge their failures, then "success" can no longer exist.
Because we need to pay rent. Because we need to eat. Because we need to survive. Because it's a lot more complicated than just "stepping away". Because the startups just don't have any of the surface level potential for us to immediately identify and get on board with, so we don't give them a chance.
I realize this post got very existential and depressing. I've been creating comics for well over a decade now, largely unnoticed, and I've fallen victim to these same limiting mindsets that we have to stick to one way, one "formula" for success - a formula that changes with the wind and only works for those who get in on the ground floor. It's been slowly killing me from the very beginning, robbing me of my joy to create, of my reason to even do this in the first place - to tell and share stories with others, to express myself creatively, to live my life surrounded by art and stories and creations made by and for others. It's made me tired and miserable, and I can tell it's done the same to those who have shared that boat with me.
But there's one silver lining I can always be sure of, and it's one I was reminded of after realizing I was still in the MochaJump Discord, with one announcement post that I hadn't yet read.
Tumblr media
Webcomics are one of the few online mediums that still truly belong to the people. Corporations are trying their hardest to take that power away. Let's not continue to let them.
If you want to help sustain, patronize, and contribute to the growth of sites that are still being operated by small teams (or even one man armies), please, consider checking out the following websites, some of which serve as platforms or publishers, others which operate as link directories for independent sites run by creators.
ComicFury GlobalComix TopWebcomics The Webcomic List The Webcomic Library Hiveworks SpiderForest SmackJeeves Archive Inkblot.art And whoever wants to use the GitHub source code used for MochaJump (RIP)
Let's do our part to decentralize webcomics again. We may not be able to leave the platforms that weakly sustain us, but we can still support those that strengthen and support us.

tbh, defending against an abuser by making public the slurs they called you and how they told you to your face they hoped your people would be genocided, and then getting your words dismissed as 'fandom drama and cancel culture' and being told you speaking up is 'what makes fandom toxic'... this is why poc online either don't say anything or are driven out of fandom spaces lol

Points at you. 10 and/or 11 for starstruck?
Two starstruck asks,,,,,,joy of joys,,
Part of an ask game linked here.
#10. What's an au you have for them?
Since them meeting at all is technically an AU i have 3 different ways that they do meet up. There's the one where Juniper ends up with the agency/adjacent to and ends up working with Reggie (have written a fic with this). The next one is Juniper surviving but basically going stealth and living as normal of a life as he can and ending up meeting Reggie through chance (most recent fic I've written). And then there's my personal favourite where Reginald "You're lucky my tracking skills are still up to snuff" Crane keeping himself busy after Phoenix was MIA and finding Juniper still alive (fic I want to write but haven't started mainly because it may end up multi chapter).
In terms of more AU canon bending taking them and putting them in a completely unrelated situation...I have a guilty pleasure Warrior Cats AU for IEYTD in general. Both JJ and Reggie have perfect warrior cats suffixes in their names already (Juniper and Crane) so they're called Junipersong (charcoal bengal) and Craneflight (tabby Norwegian forest cat). It's very silly but the amount of scenes I have in my mind for it...good lord...
#11. How was their first kiss like?
Augh my friend Imp wrote an absolutely excellent fic about it (tragically in the realm of unfinished Google docs) and I'm shaking their hand about it so hard. Basically Juniper kissing Reggie but he like wasn't ready/fully expecting it and Juniper absolutely panicking because he thinks he's misread every interaction between them both since they got closer. The second one is much sweeter though,,
#realised i phrased all the fics ive written like those ghosts that haunted scrooge#ah yes the fic of starstuck past#the fic of starstruck present and the fic of starstruck yet to come. it's so dumb#and uhh for the warrior cats thing um. of course they aren't purebreds minus Juniper who used to be a kittypet (housecat) but -#- it was moreso for easy description#reggie is fluffy but he's not quite maine coonf fluffy...norwegan forest cat was a nice middle ground...still gets big guy points too#also um side note roxanix in that au um. they adopted a kit as a stand in for robutler in that au......#also solaris is a VERY grumpy warrior turned medicine cat annnnd thats about all I have fully hashed out in my mind for it so far#im so torn abt also having triple threat.....extra large polycule where phoenix is just intimidated by the others prism is dating lmao#ANYWAYS ENOUGH ABOUT THE WARRIOR CATS AU#can you tell I have a special interest in cats/warrior cats. oh how I miss drawing cats. but I must learn people. for the brainworms...ouuu#i don't have much else to say on that second question other than....AUUUUUUGH they're so. there's so much pent up stuff.#like for JJ it's the first time he's let himself actually love another man the way he wants to while for Reggie it's a lot of -#- realising JJ is trying to be a better person while still ackowleging the fact that he did bad??? basically second chance yada yada#man. i love these two#ik im a broken ass reccord but I've never proactively posted abt them outside the last couple months and it's been so theraputic#ty for the ask it was fun :3c#ieytd#starstruck#junicrane#ask game#not tagging them specifically I don't wanna clog up tags too much#god WHY do i have such an issue eith that. mental issue. anyways

60 questions with Theo | playlist, pinterest | ->
1. What’s the one thing they would save in a fire?
Theo is a collector and a bit of a hoarder, so there’d be too much he’d try to save. I really couldn’t just say one thing… but I guess he’d grab his memory journal first.
2. What’s their biggest regret?
Not being good enough. Not being lovable enough.
3. How would they fare in a zombie apocalypse?
Theo would do very well up until a point. He’s a survivor through and through, but I do think he’d burn out eventually. He could go a few years before breaking down. When he’s no longer able to repress all of his emotions, the feeling of exhaustion would weigh on him. He’d get bitten soon after, almost on purpose.
4. Where do they see themselves in five years? Ten?
Working for his father for a few decades and later taking over his father’s company. He feels a lot of dread and nausea over this.
5. What’s their most useless, weirdest, or least marketable skill?
He can wiggle his ears.
6. What are they like in the bedroom — well-rounded lover or wooden plank?
Theo is… well. More wooden plank than anything. Sorry, Theo. But, well, he normally goes for more aggressive partners who tend to take control anyway. I don’t think Theo really wants to be all there during sex… it’s one of the reasons why he normally uses before finding hook-ups… it makes him a little foggy and loose. I do think, however, that it’s a little bit different when he’s with women. In Theo’s experience, women treat him kinder… which is one of the reasons why he mostly sleeps with men. He wants affection, sure, but he’s also uncomfortable with it… he’s used to pain. With Matthias, however, this does end up changing. Maybe it’s because Matthias is gentle with him unless he’s asked for it to be rough, or because Matthias won’t fuck him when he’s using, but Theo’s more active when having sex with Matthias. Not a lot of talking, but he pulls and pushes and moves how he wants. After a while, he starts taking control and speaking more.
7. Have they committed a crime before? Which one(s)?
Theo uses drugs frequently.
8. If they were an animal, which one would they be? Which one would they think they’d be?
Theo is a pygmy rabbit or a netherland dwarf rabbit (that temperament… yeah). I think Theo would see himself as… well, a goldfish trapped in a bowl, swimming in endless circles and going nowhere.
9. Do they cheat to win or play by the rules?
Theo plays by the rules, generally speaking. If we’re talking sports, though, he does play dirty. He’s very competitive.
10. What do they fantasize about?
Comfort. A room with a door that locks and will keep him safe all night. A bed on the floor. Blinds and curtains on every window. Matthias’s arms wrapped around him so tight he can hardly breathe.
11. Who’s the most important person in their life?
I want to say Matthias, but it’s his parents. It’s hard for Theo to cut them off, even despite the abuse. I don’t think this changes to Matthias for a very, very long time.
12. What’s their ideal vacation like?
Theo can’t even imagine what a vacation would be like. I think even fantasizing about it would stress him out… he’d just think about how far behind it’d put him academically.
13. What is/was/will be their college major?
Business. Statistics and data. He doesn’t like it.
14. What’s their favorite book genre, if they enjoy reading at all?
Theo doesn’t read for pleasure very often — he has too much reading to do for school — but I think he’s always enjoyed science fiction from a very young age.
15. How would they describe themselves?
Theo wouldn’t know how to describe himself at all. He’d freeze at the question and become despondent.
16. How would others describe them?
Matthias: Lovely beyond words. Intelligent and wry. Shy, pulls away when feelings are too much or too positive. Irresistible. Anxious about things that I could make go away if he'd let me. Lashes out when he gets scared. Strong when he shouldn’t have to be. Soft when he should be hard. Too forgiving to the wrong people. Easily frustrated. Standing on the edge. Endearingly insolent. A mirrored image. Every beautiful thing. Angel. Bambi. Mała myszko.
Everett: Sometimes he makes himself so small… like an injured animal. Jumpy and skittish. But strong, too… impassive when he’s hurt. He’s hiding a lot, but you can see through the cracks sometimes. He needs help, but he won’t let anyone in.
Jordan: Stubborn and headstrong. Naïve or just reckless. Lost. Like a child.
Dutchie: Hard to get to know. Honestly couldn’t tell you much about him despite the years of friendship. Still… you wanna protect him.
Jackson: Fun to be around, y’know… for a rich kid. Troubled, though. Hard to reach. Everyone wants to get to know him better, but… he doesn’t really allow that.
Kavi: Incredibly intelligent but totally aloof. Mysterious. Nose always buried in his books. Cold.
Imani: Too good for Matthias. Sweet.
17. What’s the most ridiculous thing they’ve ever spent money on?
A large collection of delicate Fenton glass bells and assorted pieces. He collects them and stores them in an antique curio cabinet in his apartment.
18. What’s their dream job?
He doesn’t have a dream job. He just does what he’s told and expected to do, which is to work for his father.
19. How’s their financial situation?
His parents have a lot of money. He doesn’t have a job (honestly… he isn’t permitted one). He’s financially reliant on his parents.
20. Who’s their go-to person for advice?
Theo doesn’t ask for advice from anyone.
21. What’s one secret of theirs that could potentially ruin a relationship they have?
If he told his parents that he’s bisexual and interested in men they would cut him off or worse…
22. Are they a dog person or a cat person — or something else?
Theo’s never had a pet before, so I don’t even think he himself knows the answer to this. He likes Matthias’s cat well enough, but he’s never been around many dogs to really choose between the two. I think he really likes looking at fish… I’m iffy on if he’d ever actually own one, though.
23. What’s one childhood memory they’ve never forgotten?
CW for child abuse. I’m talking directly about an instance of abuse. This isn’t vague like I usually am when I talk about Theo’s trauma.
Being beaten for tracking mud onto the rug in his father’s office. His father stood him in front of a full length mirror in the hall and made him watch. If he looked away he would be struck again. If his knees buckled he would be hauled back up and hit harder. It felt like it lasted for hours. Theo had been in the gardens beforehand, an umbrella held over him by his au pair. The dwarf sunflowers had bloomed and in his excitement he pulled off a petal and barreled into the home, heading straight to his father to show him how yellow the petals were. His au pair couldn’t keep up with him, and Theo was always forgetting to take off his shoes when he came in from outside. He was very young… maybe five or six.
24. Do they have any phobias?
Open doors. Windows without curtains or blinds. Locks that aren’t sturdy. Mirrors. Older men. Authoritative figures.
25. What’s one thing they’re utterly incapable of doing without the help of someone else?
Theo is actually very independent. It’s hard to think of anything he couldn’t do himself, because he’s always been on his own, really.
26. What’s one topic they could never get tired of researching or learning about?
Theo is very intelligent, but he’s not actually that interested in learning. He lost that drive and passion at a relatively young age. He’s no longer curious. Hm… I think he might get a little thrill from learning information that’s just… completely useless. Like, think dumb trivia. Still, though… knowledge is synonymous with pressure to him. It makes him feel sick.
27. What’s their favorite genre of music?
Theo will listen to anything. I don’t think he necessarily has a favorite genre. Hm… I think he likes lullabies, though. Quiet music. Calming.
28. Who, if anyone, do they dislike most?
Himself.
29. If they could change one thing about themselves, physical or otherwise, what would it be?
Whatever would make his parents happy with him. Whatever could make him better suited for the part they want him to play.
30. What’s their political stance?
Theo is whatever his parents want him to be on paper, but politically he’s… a liberal, I guess. His party friends, in general, lean left… and they’re definitely influencing him some. However, I don’t think he has the backbone to really go any which way.
This question is a little hard for me to answer with some of the echthroi cast because they’re rich at the end of the day, ya’ know? Materially, politics don’t touch them.
31. Are they religious?
No.
32. What were they like in high school?
He was all over the place. Quiet and then having these uncontrollable outbursts. Fearful. Frequently pulled aside by teachers, being asked pointed questions. Standoffish. Flinching when touched. Far away from the other students. At the same time he was scared to be alone, though, so he would blend in with the crowds when he could. At the summer school he was sent to yearly, the outbursts always got worse.
33. What’s the worst injury they’ve ever had?
I’m going to choose not to answer this one.
34. Do they work to live or live to work?
Live to work. He doesn’t know who he’d be without it. It’s what he was molded for.
35. Do/did they want children?
No. Theo is scared of even the idea of having children.
36. What’s their favorite thing about themselves?
Nothing? I don’t know. Theo… really doesn’t like himself. Maybe his hair, though… his pierced ears… the things he feels give him autonomy.
37. What’s their favorite thing about their significant other, if they have one?
Hm. I think Theo really likes how big Matthias is. He towers over people and is visibly strong. I think that offers Theo a lot of comfort. He feels safe when Matthias is around. Matthias is also very protective, so… it makes it easier for Theo to face his fears. There’s a reliability to Matthias that Theo needs. Matthias cares about him and tells him frequently how much he loves him… Theo’s never had that before. It makes him feel lighter.
38. If they hear something go bump in the night, do they get out of bed to check it out or do they stay put?
Theo is paralyzed but his mind shoots off at a mile a minute. He’s too terrified to do anything.
39. What’s one skill they wish they had?
A photographic memory. It would make his life a lot easier with regards to his education. He’s never thought about the downsides to this… especially as someone with drug and trauma related memory loss…
40. What do other people find annoying about them, if anything?
He can be very cutting and dismissive. He's judgmental, too. First impressions are everything if you want him to even be cordial with you.
41. What do other people love most about them?
He has this magnetism to him that you can’t really put your finger on. I think it’s a combination of how handsome he is alongside the way he keeps himself almost entirely separate from everyone else… you always want what you can’t have.
42. What’s the typical first impression after meeting this person?
That he’s very prickly or just cold… restless… doleful.
43. What do people notice first about them, as far as their appearance goes?
The repressed anger and sorrow in his eyes. Then, maybe, all those beauty marks. The elegant line of his body.
44. Does this person try their best to be honest or are they not above lying to get their way?
Theo isn’t a very good liar, but he’s very good at prevarication and skirts the truth with ease.
45. What kind of movies do they like?
Theo doesn’t have time for movies. Regardless… I think he’d like horror movies. I think… Theo would find a lot of comfort in watching horrible things happen to fictional people. He could fictionalize the abuse he’s faced that way.
46. Are they the life of the party or a wallflower?
I’d say he’s a bit of a mixed bag on this one. If he’s using, he’s the life of the party. If he’s sober, he’s a wallflower. Either way, though, people will approach him to strike up conversation and ask him to dance.
47. Are they an early bird or a night owl?
Early bird. Theo doesn’t actually like the night. Does he still party until three in the morning? Yeah. But… well. Theo tortures himself in many different ways, doesn’t he?
48. Are they a good kisser?
He’s not bad at it, but he never really kissed anyone until Matthias. So… he’s not amazing at it or anything. He’s learning as he goes.
49. Do they think about what they wear or do they throw on whatever they find first?
Theo definitely plans out outfits. I think he has three separate lives he’s living and three separate fashion senses to suit each of them. He dresses very typically masculine and rich when he’s with his parents. He dresses down for university but incorporates some elements of his nightlife wardrobe on occasion. He experiments more with sexuality and gender for his nightlife fashion… I think this is what he would prefer to wear all the time, only with a less dramatic flare.
50. Do they have any insecurities?
I could be contracted to write a trilogy about Theo’s insecurities and would meet every deadline with ease. The underlying root of all of his insecurities is his belief that he’s unlovable and dirty, though. Let’s keep it simple with that.
51. What is their favorite thing about themselves?
A repeat question. I’ll add onto my last answer, though, to say that I think he has some days where he feels really good about his appearance and some days he doesn’t. He’s temperamental.
52. What’s their diet like?
Theo eats whatever is made for him and will finish all of it even if he dislikes it or isn’t hungry. He doesn’t have any favorites, but he really dislikes candy or sweets.
53. If they could only eat one thing for the rest of their life, what would it be?
Again, he doesn’t have anything in particular he likes. I guess something easy to eat would be the answer… maybe mangos.
54. What’s their body count, if they have one?
I think he has sex very regularly… on average I'd say once a week unless he’s studying too intensely for a break or his last experience was a really rough one. He doesn’t always sleep with new people, either. The faces blur, though. Hm. I can’t say an exact number and Theo wouldn’t be counting anyway.
55. Who do they look up to most?
The blurry image he has of his childhood au pair.
56. What do they smell like?
Copying things I’ve mentioned previously here… Theo smells very clean. Think green and fresh… a little powdery. He doesn’t often wear cologne, so he mostly just smells like soap — not even his body lotion is scented. He doesn’t like strong or chemical smells on himself. As a signature he’d wear a spritz of Francis Kurkdjian’s Aqua Universalis. However, Theo will also wear Gucci’s Tears from the Moon, which was a gift from his mother, if he’s at family events — it’s outside of his preference but that’s neither here nor there.
57. How do they feel about drugs?
…Theo is an addict. He doesn’t get clean for a few years and relapses multiple times. He relies on them but he also wishes he’d never touched them sometimes, usually when the guilt floods in after he’s sobered up from one of the outbursts he’s had because of them.
58. If they could change one thing about their life, what would it be?
Hm. I’m going to bow out of answering this question as well.
59. What motivates them?
A desire for recognition, acceptance, and love.
60. What are some of their simple pleasures?
Collecting knickknacks. Cold showers. The wind whipping through his hair when he sticks his head out of the window of a car. The sound of the windchimes outside his bedroom window. Odious purring on his chest. Matthias’s voice in his ear.

What if stick!Alan gains powers at some point? He’s fidgeting with a random item and accidentally resizes it somehow, and he just silently stares at it wondering how that just happened and what it means
god that'd be funny. SC is so excited because HOLY FUCK THAT'S SO COOL!!!!! and alan is just unsure if he should be worried about this ability or not. i think it'd be fun if he could do similar things to what agent does with his array of tools as well. plus like. that'd be hella interesting when vic comes around

Geralt sits on the couch beside him with a sigh and Jaskier already dreads what will follow.
"Is it me?" Geralt asks, and his voice is hushed, as though he is afraid of scaring him, of driving him away. The words still pierce his ears and ache. "Is it something I did?"
Desperate. Inistent and desperate and yet gentle, so unbearably gentle it makes Jaskier think it's his fault and, in a way, it is.
He is staring at the wall, right over the fireplace. He has been for the past half hour.
His eyes are burning. "No, Geralt. It's not about you."
"Tell me. I need to know." Geralt shuffles closer and puts his hand on Jaskier's, resting on his lap. The touch hurts more than it intends to, spilling with complaint. "I need to know if I can fix it."
A lump in his throat. "You can't, dear. It's not you."
"Then what?"
"Geralt, please." Jaskier's voice breaks and the crack echoes in the silence that follows.
There is something seething inside him and he cannot tell if it's anger, or tears. And he can't even look at Geralt and he, dear man, he tries so hard and cares and loves and it's like then, like before. It is. But he can't help the way his heart is screaming and his chest hurts as though to tear itself apart.
He can't help the numbness.
And when it reaches him, it only grows.
Geralt swallows beside him, gaze now dropped. "I want to help you," he says and he is so honest and so sad and so disappointed in his inability Jaskier almost hates it.
And isn't it selfish? Maybe he likes staring at the wall. Maybe he likes rubbing his fingers together until they burn. Maybe he likes being silent sometimes. Not all times are for smiling and singing. And Geralt wants to help, because if he doesn't, he will somehow be at fault, and it will somehow be about him again.
Jaskier winces at the thought. Gods, that's not fair.
He shakes his head. "You are doing all you can."
Then, as though to fulfill a fake responsibility, to reassure him with all the conviction he lacks, he looks at him.
And stays there.
No, it's not fair. Because Geralt is looking at him with such care and regret and such love and helplessness that makes him feel even worse somehow, despite, despite. And every day Geralt keeps asking why, and how and what can I do and it hurts, it tears him apart and he wants to wail it's me, it's just me, you can't fix it and I hate it but now it's me.
But it only dies on his tongue. Instead, he lets out a silent sob. "I'm sorry, Geralt." It's barely a whisper.
Geralt is wiping his tears before he registers they're flowing and his hands are so soft and so, so careful. "I miss you." Selfless. And yet.
More tears. His shoulders are shaking. "I'm right here."
And shouldn't that be enough?
Geralt stares at him for some moments, unmoving. Jaskier wants to beg. He wants to hold his hand and not let him go because gods know he needs him more than anything but his terms are too difficult. He can't force Geralt to follow them. He can't, and this time Geralt would have a reason to walk away.
He can only pray that he doesn't, because he can't let him leave thinking it's his fault. Thinking the love has changed.
But Geralt doesn't leave.
Geralt just nods, and takes a deep breath, and gently wraps his arms around Jaskier and leads his head to rest on his shoulder.
Geralt doesn't leave. Not again, not even now, despite all.
And Jaskier, certain inside his hug at last, can only cry.

Sometimes we like people who are goofy and very sad at the same time captain.
i can't explain why, but this ask somehow felt very earnest and it hit me right in the heart because good god what a mood??
the tsp narrator is goofy and a dork who hums along to elevator music, and he spirals into a disaster of catastrophic proportions because negative feedback emotionally destroys him. he opens a vent and whispers at stanley/the player to come sneak around with him as if he's actually inside it, and in the same ending he begs you not to leave him alone but mourns the inevitable truth that you will. he sets up a press conference about how revolutionary your choice to go up and down an elevator is. he builds an entire new game. he makes a button that says "stanley", and the end is never the end is never the... so on.
i may jokingly scold him in the comics i draw, but the writing for his character in the game is literally so solid that the entire experience relies on it. the game is just... so good. god i love it.

Okay so I’m going to take the Immortal Modern Volo thing and make it significantly worse.
Volo meets Johanna and falls in love with her and has a beautiful little daughter named Hikari/Dawn. He does not remember what Akari looks like or her voice or her habits or anything, because that was 200 fucking years ago, and now that he’s married he’s in the firm opinion that the world SHOULDN’T be destroyed, actually.
Johanna is aware that Volo is cursed to be immortal because he went crazy and did something very stupid in his youth. She does not care too much because he’s an absolute sweetheart now and that’s all that matters.
She starts to care a lot more when Volo, who just realized who Akari is after Hikari/Dawn saved the entire fucking Sinnoh region from a gang of terrorists, tells Johanna about Akari.
Volo sleeps on the couch for a week.
Fair enough.

let me preface this by clarifying i am not anti therapy in any way whatsoever and in fact encourage people to get therapy if they can and even go the extra step to help friends find the right type of therapy that may help them
ok now that that's out of the way.
therapy is bullshit man you go to a therapist saying "hey. i wanna kill myself. can you help me stop wanting to kill myself somehow?" and they go "sure! first step, stop wanting to kill yourself" and you say "well i can't. that's why i came to you. bc i don't know. how to stop wanting to kill myself" and they'll say "that's a shame. i can't help you if you want to kill yourself. that'll be 125$ please"
#mad abt my old therapist again#even checked the cost of sessions in usd to make this accessible. came out to be 124$ and a bit. and i did that on a weekly basis for YEARS#and i'm extra mad bc trying to find a new therapist is already hard esp with bpd where your options are very limited as is#but when they ask abt my history with therapy and they ask why i stopped seeing him after years. what am i supposed to say#so that scares them off and they say they can't help me or they're like. scared to go deep with me ig. bc idk. they're scared I'll snap?#what am i supposed to do. hospitalizing myself isn't an option obvs. what is there left.#it feels like a cycle#like. 'i can't help you if you don't want to help yourself'. but i need help even figuring out how to want that#and it's not like ppl in my life know how to help. tbh they usually make it worse. so loved ones aren't an option and professionals aren't -#- an option. so what is there left. how am i supposed to do a thing that comes naturally to others but not to me#even with medication even being in a recovery program i want to kms more than i used to for years#I'm supposedly taking the right steps. but. to get metaphorical ig. the road is crumbling and there's nowhere to go#and that only makes me spiral more. despite taking the right steps i feel like i'm only getting worse. there's no hope for me. lol#vent#suicide //#negative //#ask to tag#i need a good cry like full-on sobbing and screaming but unfortunately. i became too emotionally constipated for that

i honestly really love reading your tags on the art you rb!! you're so enthusiastic about each piece and your comments help me to enjoy the art even more tbh!!
oh me too! it's so easy to just scroll scroll scroll and look like 3 seconds at someone's art, think "cool" and hit 'like' and then forget about it. when i write these comments i'm forced to pause and think why i like it. so it really makes me enjoy the art more too! it's part of the reason why i keep doing it now that i've gotten in the habit!

I spent like an hour drawing these with my finger on my phone in a moving car, just so I could properly articulate my Hollow Knight hot take:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adult Ghost shouldn’t look like THK but with shorter horns just because they had similar looking shells when they were young. Hollow looks the way they do now because they were the only vessel to be “Fully Grown” and “Raised to prime form”
The entire point of the Godhome Ritual is to have a symbiotic relationship between the Seekers and their God, the seekers gaining a respite from their “silent minds” while their “godly focus” elevates an entity to their most powerful form, whether that means returning them to a state of former glory, or ascending them to an all new level of power. (possibly both in some cases?)
Additionally, when Ghost uses their Void abilities (most notably, Shade Cloak), the shape of their horns become slightly more exaggerated while they are briefly void.
Quid Pro Quo; I’d say it stands to reason that a “Fully grown” and “raised to prime form” version of Ghost, would be a much LESS exaggerated version of The Shade Lord.
To further my point, consider that young Hollow’s horns only have 2 prongs, but when fully grown, they have 3 and they don’t really resemble their original shape THAT much. Ghost’s horns are rounder than young THKs, so I’d say it’s also fair to assume they could become more curved than Hollows, as well as developing a 3rd prong like Hollow’s. All this could very well be interpreted as looking something like the shape of Shade Lords head.
TL:DR:
Adult Hollow Knight: Round, spindly, sad Soul baby.
Adult Ghost: Sharp, pointy, angey Void baby.

the other night i saw some quote from sera gamble (spn screenwriter from s1-s7 and showrunner from s6-s7) that was like "this is a horror show - we're supposed to make as many people suffer as possible" and there were ppl in the tags enthusiastically agreeing, and that bothers me lol
when i complain abt the way death and torture are used on spn it's not bc im like Soft and unable to appreciate tragedy lmfao that couldn't be further from the truth. are we seriously gonna act like killing off established characters purely for shock value is good/needed? like back in the day i thought we were all in agreement that spn's unchecked habit (esp mid-late show) of resurrecting popular side characters solely to kill them for the drama of it all was at best incredibly fucking annoying and at worst insultingly lazy writing. charlie's s10 death and kevin's s9 death and eileen's s12 death and their aftermaths - or lack thereof - were all straight-up fucking BAD. it wasn't necessary for patience from s13 to be missouri's granddaughter but they just Had to bring back a character who knew sam and dean in SEASON ONE to make her death emotional.
yes unexpected death is an essential component of the fabric of this show as is fucking around with the rules of life and death but those 2 story elements are at odds and so you end up in situations where certain characters' deaths are obviously preventable, or feel narratively unearned and even punitive, or occur so frequently so as to lose all emotional impact, or reveal one of the writing team's many blind spots.
similar complaints abt torture. you have to think abt which characters get tortured/abused most often and HOW they're tortured, and the underlying misogyny and racism responsible for the differences.
