this is probably going to be a weird ramble but i like when people show their authenticity through their writing and art.
like, ok, I was reading this fate fanfic. It was kind of silly in premise and there weren’t a lot of line breaks, but you could just feel that the author loved what they were writing about and updated so frequently that you could tell they had a blast writing it, and that made me enjoy it all the more. hell, even when a published book is unashamedly self-indulgent like The Grimrose Girls, proudly flaunting lines that you knew the author saw from a tumblr post and went “yeah, my secondary protagonist can say that and it’ll be so funny”, that kind of enthusiasm is infectious.
what i’m saying is, that even when fanfiction and published work and fanart are jaw-droppingly knock-out-of-the-park good and so well-composed it makes you scream and cry and throw up, there’s also merit to the soft, schmaltzy work that just exists to make you and the author feel good. there is nothing more important, especially when you're creating work FOR FREE for others to enjoy simply because you enjoy creating it, than enjoying what you do, and what you write.
and when you can feel that enjoyment-- that palpable, writing-down-ideas-in-a-notebook-before bed, can't wait to wake up and open your word doc and get to work feeling-- in an author's work, that's nothing short of magic.

Tumblr media
There's a reason I always moderate comments but i approved this one so people can see how truly vile it gets sometimes. I'm not arrogant. I don't think the way I write is better at all. Exploring them on an authentic level means exploring this, or any, version of them with wholehearted passion, not that this is the authentic interpretation of them. Writing intense stuff isn't a brag, it's a warning so people can be prepared for stuff like arguments and confrontations. I always over-warn for CW stuff so that, again, people are prepared. I never once have asked people to read it. It's just there and I've tried my best to a) write something i loved and b) thoroughly warn those who might read it. Any interpretation of the characters is valid and worth exploring. It's so sad to see a reeled off list of all the way Steve "should be" and the implication that nothing but strict canon adherence could ever be a passionate, worthy exploration. It's... only fanfic? It's not real. They're not real. Nothing is real and everything is possible and that's supposed to be what's fun about it.
I write the characters very intensely, so yes, they are often out of character, sorry for... warning about that? I write different backgrounds for them and play with the negative space of possibilities and potential and i do this with authentic curiosity and passion because I love doing it and i get very into it. Sorry for warning about that too, I guess? When I first started writing in this fandom, some people pointed out to me that I could CW warn for them being OOC and that was new to me, i didn't think I had to warn for that. I thought people would read the tags, like in other fandoms, and understand that the story would do different things with the characters but it became clear that this was actually solid advice as this was a fandom obsessed with "canon adherence" and policing. So I thought I would CW as thoroughly as I could so no one would be shocked or disappointed and then maybe they wouldn't leave an essay of hate in the comments.
But ultimately, people like this would only be satisfied if I deleted everything and stopped writing. I barely participate in this fandom as it is beyond answering asks and writing. I don't rec my own work. The thing i don't ever want, and this is why it was worrying seeing something like YD becoming "popular", is for people to feel like they *should* read my work without having gone and looked for it via the tags. Without having found it naturally, just by browsing and thinking "that's definitely for me". I've only ever posted for small rarepairs in the past so a couple of comments on a fic always made me so happy. I write for myself and the few others in the world who might like it. I have never written for an audience. If you don't like something I wrote, it's not for you. Genuinely. Move along to the next, no? That's what I would do.
This was so spiteful and targeted. YD is so old at this point, I just don't understand people who do shit like this. I don't bother anyone and I try to be here for anyone who needs me. I CW as thoroughly as I can. I don't think I'm better than anyone. I think every single iteration of these characters is worthy and valid and what matters is how fun they were to write, for the author. I had so much fucking fun with these stories that seeing this miserable little rant seems pointless to me. I don't care if you didn't like it. I don't care if it wasn't to your taste. Writing it was what I wanted. Sharing it is secondary, always. It's fanfiction, written for free in my spare time. I didn't take up space, I didn't trample anyone. There is no reason for this beyond spite.
I am sorry about the vest/jacket mixup, however. Truly, genuinely from the bottom of my heart devastatingly sorry about that. I know it'll take time for people to forgive me and maybe no one ever will, I have to make my peace with that.
Anyway, thanks for loudly projecting your feelings onto me and my work.

Some Mizrak / Mizrox Analysis and Headcanons
Tumblr media
I know, I know, I'm That Alurox Blog™, but I'm just gonna take off the rarepair goggles for a bit to take a closer look at Mizrak and his relationship with Olrox as it's presented in canon. I feel like there's a tendency for his character to be reduced to just the 'repressed gay monk' archetype and it does him a disservice because he's way more interesting than that!!!
Anyway probably not as cohesive as my Olrox analysis because I don't really have specific headcanons with regard to his backstory yet but here goes:
1. Mizrak FUCKS!!1!
Tumblr media
All the "haha the Catholic monk folded and had gay sex with a hot vampire in .2 seconds" jokes aside... I think Mizrak really does fuck. Like I'm not convinced at all that he is some repressed virgin who just got his world rocked for the first time.
First of all, he takes like, zero convincing to jump in bed with someone who has just established themselves as an enemy. We get the little fight in the courtyard, Olrox saying, "let's do this somewhere more comfortable" and next we see them they're already post-coitus. Furthermore, Mizrak is like... pretty fucking casual about it? Like, he's the one brushing a clingy Olrox off in the morning. I'm sorry but I don't see any evidence in that scene that suggests he hasn't done this sort of thing before. This man has had casual sex before, presumably with other men.
Sure, we get a few shots of him being mopey and conflicted in the morning after scene, but these are brought on by Olrox watering the seeds of doubt he already has about the whole working with Erzsebet thing; not Catholic Guilt over knocking boots with a vampire.
Also just... from a writer's perspective, if you have some repressed monk character and he's gonna get carnal with a vampire, you are MILKING that shit for all it's worth. You're gonna lay on the angst, the temptation, the moral quandary of giving into the sins of the flesh. But all of that is markedly absent in these scenes. We just see two grown men who think each other are hot and decided to have sex about it.
2. A Foundation of Mistrust
Tumblr media
The first thing either of these men learn about each other is that they are on opposite sides of the same conflict (and it don't stop them from fuckin' 😌)
Olrox's mistrust is born out of his experiences with colonization by the Spanish, and an understanding that imperialism is the ultimate goal of Erzsebet's mission. Mizrak's distrust is born out of Olrox being a vampire, and the antagonistic nature of their first meeting.
But there's still a draw, of course. Despite going along with the abbot's plans, Mizrak expresses some misgivings about the whole thing. He doesn't want to work with Erzsebet—they just have no other choice. This is probably a position that Olrox knows all too well: just as native Americans were divided on whether or not to help the American colonists, just as some states in mesoamerica decided working with the Spanish was a good opportunity to strike blows to the increasingly powerful Mexica Alliance.
A telling thing Mizrak says to Olrox is, "There's evil everywhere we look, so we use our heads." In the context of their conversation, he's referring to the arrangement with Erzsebet—but I think it's also his general attitude toward Olrox as well. He's willing to get close to him, but he's going to keep his wits about him and not lower his guard.
They don't trust each other, but they do begin to understand each other. For what it's worth, I do think Olrox grows to trust Mizrak by the end of the season (otherwise he wouldn't have put his cards on the table to protect him during the battle), but it's clear from Mizrak's reaction that he has not grown to return that trust yet.
Which isn't to say that Mizrak is being unfair here. As far as he's aware, Olrox really hasn't done anything to earn his trust yet. Pulling him out of battle was supposed to be Olrox's gesture of "see? I'm sticking my neck out for you!" but to Mizrak it's just cowardice. Which... I'll touch on later.
3. "Is that what you have planned for me?" / "Of course not, I'm not in love with you."
Tumblr media
Again, jokes about Mizrak having the absolute balls to be like "oh so ur in love with me?" after like, two nights aside... This is a really interesting exchange they have here??
For me, Mizrak's line here is just an expression of his distrust. Olrox has just told him about the only man he's ever loved, and this??? THIS is his response???
Hoo boy. This isn't "well, we are having sex and hanging out so obviously you're falling in love with me 😌". This is "I think you're just trying to manipulate me into believing you actually have a conscience/are capable of compassion, and I'm not falling for it." Mizrak thinks he has Olrox all figured out. Thinks he's calling a bluff.
And so with that framing?? Olrox's response, "Of course not, Mizrak. I'm not in love with you," is a FANTASTIC rebuttal. This isn't "oops, you caught me slipping and catching feelings, time to deny, deny, deny!!!" This is, "Of course you can trust me. I'm not trying to lure you in with romance or manipulate you into temptation—we both know I didn't have to do any of that to get here. I'm just here to tell you like it is, and you know in your heart that I haven't told you a lie yet."
Mizrak is accusing Olrox of trying to manipulate him into developing feelings for him, and Olrox is saying, "Gods no, I know you're smarter than that."
Which... is SO delicious in that I'm sure this is the line that will prove to be a lie. It's just not one yet. Ooh the foreshadowing and dramatic irony of it all gives me goosebumps!!! (Have I mentioned that I love Olrox and everything about the way his lines are written??? 🫠🫠 THE character of all time I love him sm)
4. Mizrak Has Nothing to Lose (History of the Knights of Malta Speedrun)
Tumblr media
We know that Mizrak and the abbot came from Malta, and the 8-pointed cross they bear identifies them as part of the Order of St John. The history of the Order and of Malta is basically a centuries-long back and forth between the Ottoman, Holy Roman, and Byzantine empires. The Order is founded in Jerusalem 1023 with the mission of preserving the faith, aiding the poor, and providing care to people making pilgrimages to the Holy Land, regardless of faith. But they turn into this sort of paramilitary outfit during the crusades—granted authority by the pope to sort of act on its own without any real checks and balances. In short, they are tasked with defending the Catholic church independently of any conflicts between individual European/Christian nations, and European powers grant them land and financial support so they can carry out their mission.
Eventually the Ottomans expel them from Jerusalem (and a few other places), and the Order makes its new home on Malta, where they are tolerated by the locals in exchange for establishing some infrastructure (hospitals, schools, etc) and boosting the economy. The Order famously defends Malta from another Ottoman attack in 1565 and they're heralded as heroes of the church (but let's stick a pin in that for now)
As the centuries go by and the conflict between the Muslim world and Christian world kinda fizzles out, the Order becomes an outdated relic of a bygone era. The Catholic church lost some traction in the protestant reformation, and a more complex political landscape has the knights taking arms against other catholic entities (particularly the Franco-Spanish war). In fact, by the time Nocturne is set, the Order had already established a protestant division because they just REALLY didn't want to lose the support of Germany and England. France, who had been one of the Order's strongest supporters, forms an alliance with the Ottomans, and they just kinda have to look the other way.
As a sovereign entity that's no longer needed or even really wanted by mainland Europe, the Order decides to use its advantageous location to take on the responsibility of intercepting Ottoman ships—confiscating goods and taking slaves, to the extent that Malta becomes something of a major slave trade hub in the Mediterranean. The age of piracy is in full swing, and the Order earns itself a not so great reputation of effectively being pirates themselves, as even Christian ships start complaining that they're getting raided by the Knights. This campaign was called the 'Corso', and despite the Order's vows of poverty, it entitled them to a portion of any spoils they confiscated during a time when the Maltese economy was doing poorly.
Their souring reputation creates a cyclical effect where more and more countries drop their financial support for the Order, and the Knights have to lean further into the piracy and slave trade stuff to support Malta's economy. Not only is Catholicism losing ground, but the Order's mission: preserving the faith and aiding the poor, has become more of a loosely interpreted suggestion. The meaning of the 8-pointed cross gets diluted, as non-members of the Order are able to fly the flag—for a fee.
So imagine you are Mizrak, and you're a devoted Catholic who's committed himself to the Mission™ only to find... It's pretty much bullshit. No one cares, least of all the Knights of Malta who are more interested in engaging in legalized piracy and slave trade than God. You've lost all sense of purpose. But then... Some abbot named Emmanuel comes along and HE is legit. HE believes in the power of God and Faith and the Church. HE sees the way the world has turned its back on God and HE has a plan to fix it.
Sure, it involves allying with a vampire and creating a demon army for her, but that's hardly any different from anything else the Order's been up to for the past two centuries or so. At least this time it's For The Cause. You have to believe Emmanuel is doing the right thing, that he's in this for the right reasons—because if you can't have faith in that, then what else is there? The world has already abandoned you.
(The history of Malta and the Order is pretty wild honestly. Here are some sources to check out:)

5. Courage as a Virtue and Redemption
Tumblr media
So back to courage, and back to that pin from the Order's history.
The Ottoman Empire was massive, and during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, they vastly outnumbered the Knights. Ottoman forces had about 30-40 thousand soldiers while the Knights had six thousand—half of which were Maltese civilians who were called upon for service. The siege lasted four months, and ended in a decisive victory for Malta.
This was an epic underdog story that turned the tides of the conflict and revitalized Christian morale across Europe. And I think this story is what drives Mizrak. This is why he became a Knight in the first place. What he believes the Order is capable of, what he believes Emmanuel is fighting for.
To be clear, I think Mizrak is disheartened by what the Order and church has become by the 18th century. So Emmanuel's plan, as sketchy as it is, is an opportunity to restore it to its former glory and rally people around the church again. To return the sort of disgraced Order to its original mission: preserving the faith and protecting the vulnerable.
This is his Moment to serve his God in the fullest extent of the word, to take a stand for what he believes in. Anything short of that is cowardice. And that's why he's so offended that Olrox would pull him out of that fight.
And if we take all this context from the previous points here and we circle back to his and Olrox's first meeting, it adds a new layer of meaning to, "It doesn't sit well with your faith" and Mizrak's defensive, "What would you know about faith?" — Mizrak has likely already had to compromise his morals on more than one occasion, with his faith being the one thing he still has to hold onto to justify it.
6. So What Is His Deal?
Tumblr media
Honestly, I really don't know. The history of Malta and the Knights is so long and winding, the show could do just about anything with his backstory and I'd be like, "yeah, that checks out."
What I do think we can take away from canon is:
He's a True Believer and defender of the Catholic faith. One of his first lines to Olrox is his "faith is a foundation" speech where he quotes Isaiah 43:2. In the finale, we got his call to the other Knights to put down their swords and pray with him for forgiveness to stop the madness. When Olrox presses him about why he's forging night creatures, he explains that Catholics are being executed.
He's a pragmatist. Despite his devotion to the church, he demonstrates some moral flexibility so to speak. There's the "use our heads" line, of course. But there's also this line during the meeting with Drolta: "We don't have to pretend to like each other. This is an arrangement convenient to us both because we share a common enemy." Devoted as he is, this man is not a purist.
... But he still has lines he will not cross. Earlier in the season, we see the abbot express discomfort about Drolta attacking Maria, about harming children. But by the end of the season, he's justifying sacrificing her to Erzsebet. Mizrak however, remains steadfast in the "killing children is wrong, even if they are part of the 'godless mob'" position. Holding this line is what pushes him to deflect from Emmanuel and Erzsebet.

alright, this goes out to you guys. just gonna build off of this post
(THIS IS ALL JUST MY OPINION, NOT FACT!)
soooo I think the reason there are so many contrasting headcanons is not only because of the open interpretations the games leave, but because of what kinds of kirby media people are introduced to at first. you got the main games, the anime, the mangas, the light novels, etc. which. wow that's a lot of material you can build on. AND CONSIDERING THE AMOUT OF LORE EACH OF THESE TOPICS ARE COOKING???? DAWG WH
and I GUESS I can understand why some hcs are so bizarre in other people's eyes. but the way this fandom handles those different headcanons is...a lil bad.
YES I KNOW THIS ISN'T SPECIFIC TO THE KIRBY FANDOM, but the whole reason why I'm making this is to at least understand why people take it so close to heart.
and. not calling anyone out. but I do see quite a lot of posts with people (critiquing? complaining?) about how popular headcanons "ruin" the fandom (and this goes with ships too, but I'll get into that later) and all I gotta ask is
does it really??? does it really ruin the fandom?
I'm just gonna say. no. it doesn't.
you are focusing on a small percentage out of...oh idk...AN ENTIRE FANBASE? at LEAST open up a little and find a new circle if it is bothering you that much. or better yet. BLOCK! filter out tags!
with the amout of differing kirby medias, please understand that there will be headcanons that will oppose yours and that's okay! just don't be a jerk about it!
--
NOW. with the ships. specifically metadede. gonna try to put my overwhelming bias aside for this one I promise.
though metadede is the most popular ship in the fandom, it still comes with it's critics. and some are. actually valid! such as their relationship doesn't immediately have to be romantic. it can be seen as platonic! and I can understand why people feel that way.
but things get sour when people immediately try to crap on it because in their eyes, and correct me if I'm wrong here, metadede overshadows every other ship in the fandom. you hardly get to hear about their rarepair because of how metadede is everywhere.
if you take a step back and really look. there is a reason it is so popular. because of the LARGE amounts of media they have together. in the games. in the mangas. in smash. in official art. I mean if you wanna count the anime go ahead.
what I'm trying to say here is that compared to any other character interactions, meta knight and dedede are definitely up there for the most interaction in the franchise. and I'm not trying to downplay any rarepairs or other ships with a smaller fanbase.
BUT DON'T BLAME THE SHIPPERS! they are only doing the same as anyone else, they are going off of what they are given by canon and simply building off of that.
though, because I am a metadede shipper myself, you can take this segment with a grain of salt.
---
in conclusion...people can have their different takes. and that's okay! having different opinions is what builds this fandom and draws the attention of so many. but please! do not take any of these takes personal!
If there is a point in here you would like to argue against or build on, feel free to do so. I'm open to any other views.

part 1 | part 2
---
Kara’s job as maid of honor was basically done after her speech, which she was thankful for. She’d dutifully checked in on Lena throughout the course of the hours-long reception to see if there was anything she could do, but Lena always shook her head and thanked her, letting her know that her presence alone was enough comfort to her. Kara warmed at the sentiment, but she knew better than to delude herself by attaching more meaning to these words, so she smiled and ushered Lena towards the other guests who wanted a moment of her precious time. It wasn’t very hard to do considering Lena’s attempts to spare a moment and chat with her was somehow always intercepted by Jack or someone else from the wedding party so that Lena could just briefly chat, it’ll only take a minute.
When it looked like Lena got a moment for herself, Kara watched her make a beeline to the table she and Andrea randomly occupied while they watched the dance floor filled with strangers dancing and having a good time.
“This is a lovely surprise,” Lena said, eyeing the two of them. Kara’s smile was small, yet Andrea only cocked her head to the side and smirked.
“Well, Pulitzer here was just regaling me about her upcoming piece.”
“Pulitzer?” Lena asked, quirking a brow in question.
“It’s a new nickname she’s trying out,” she offered with a shrug. “Jury’s out on how much I like it.”
Andrea poked her with a finger on her exposed bicep as she exaggerated how much she’d been pushed, Lena’s eyes trained on them all the while.
“She resists, but you can tell she secretly likes it.”
Despite her best efforts, Kara’s cheeks warmed and she had to duck her head as she chuckled, wondering what kind of game Andrea was playing at.
“Anyway,” she started, clearing her throat. “Is everything alright? Do you need anything from me?” Kara asked. Regardless of her own warring feelings for her best friend, she wanted to make sure that Lena had the best time at her wedding.
“No, no. Everything’s fine. I was mostly wondering where you ran off to.”
“Here I am,” she said.
“I see that.”
Their small table grew quiet, she and Andrea on one side with Lena on the other. It was turning out to be a strange moment, and Kara desperately wanted to change it.
“I’ll get us some drinks, Pulitzer,” Andrea said, breaking the growing tension between them, rising to her feet. Kara glanced at the table in front of them where two brand new drinks they’d just gotten sat untouched. But Andrea was already out of her seat and resting her hand on Kara’s shoulder. The hand didn’t linger for too long, but it lingered long enough that Kara felt the warmth of her palm on her skin; long enough for Kara to but turn her head to see well manicured fingers painted a shiny red against the tan of her skin. “Lena, can I get you anything?”
“No, I’m fine.”
“I’ll be back, querida.”
Kara’s gaze followed after Andrea before she turned her attention back to her best friend who was eyeing her curiously.
“That’s new. I didn’t know you two were such good friends.”
She laughed, the sound coming out strangled and awkward. “We’re—I mean, we’re not. I stepped out earlier and she was smoking and we just got to talking. That’s all.”
“Is that where you were after the…”
“Yeah, yeah,” She interrupted. “I just got a little overwhelmed, lots of emotions on your big day and just needed some fresh air. I’m fine. I promise.”
Lena nodded, studying her, before she finally seemed to accept her words at face value, offering her a gentle smile. She then steered the conversation elsewhere . “God, I’d love to have a smoke right now.”
Kara snorted. “You still have your pack in your dressing room. But I doubt your uptight mother would appreciate you leaving to grab a smoke and drop ash all over your pristine dress.”
Lena snorted, leaning forward. “I would risk Lillian’s wrath for a drag right now. But I suppose you’re right.”
“I normally am,” she offered, a teasing smile on her lips.
Lena adjusted herself, pulling at her dress as she pivoted in her seat slightly. She then reached towards Kara and placed a hand on her forearm. The touch was warm and soft, yet it ignited the space underneath Kara’s skin and she had to fight the urge to pull back, unsure if she could trust her emotions from not snapping from how taut they’d been pulled in all sorts of directions.
“Listen, Kara, is everything alright? You gave such a lovely speech, which I think was far too nice—”
“Everything I said was the truth.”
Lena, bashful, dropped her gaze momentarily. “Thank you, darling. I appreciate that. But I guess I was more concerned after your speech—”
Yet before Lena could say anything more, one of the groomsmen tapped Lena on the shoulder to retrieve her so she could talk with a group of Jack’s college friends sitting and laughing on the other side of the grand hall, all of them waving Lena over.
Lena smiled apologetically. “Sorry, it’s just never ending, it seems like.”
But Kara only shook her head, offering her best friend a sympathetic smile. “Don’t apologize! You’re the bride. Of course everyone wants to speak with you. Go enjoy your own wedding. If anything, I’m literally the last person you should be talking to right now, you talk to me every day.”
Lena made a face, but Kara couldn’t quite get a read on her.  “I’ll find you later, alright? Maybe I can use you to hide.”
She nodded and gave Lena her most winning smile. “Go, they’re waiting for you.”
She watched from her seat as Lena stood and let herself be whisked away by the elbow, turning to look over her shoulder and comically point at how she was being dragged away. Yet when she reached Jack’s side, Kara couldn’t help but turn away. She didn’t bother lingering at the table and instead headed to the bar where she found Andrea standing to the side and leaning against it, sipping on some type of amber liquid.
“Here I thought you were going to get us drinks,” she said, sidling up to the other woman.
Andrea only smirked. “I lied.”
“I know. I am without a drink,” Kara said, making a show of her empty hands. Andrea, amusement in her eyes, turned to face the bartender and signaled wordlessly with her glass. From the corner of Kara’s eye, she watched the bartender quickly fill an identical tumbler with the same amber liquid before placing it on the bartop between them.
“There’s your drink.”
Kara scrunched her face. “Scotch’s not really my thing.”
“You already smoked today. Might as well add this to the list.”
She proceeded to stare down at her drink, her fingers tapping on the counter just a few shy centimeters from the glass.
“Wow, it’s like being back in boarding school.”
“I resent that.” Despite herself, she laughed, her head tipping back slightly as she picked up the tumbler. Andrea clinked her glass against hers and nudged her to take a sip. So Kara did, the warmth quickly spreading from her tongue down her throat and into her belly. The nuanced flavors were lost on her, and she simply grimaced as she downed the whole glass. Then she slammed the glass back on the bar and pointed to the bartender for a refill.
“You’re like an alien fresh off from space,” Andrea commented as if studying her, but she followed suit, downing the rest of her drink and requesting a refill.
“I feel like it sometimes.”
The pair of them gathered their glasses, their backs digging into the edge of the bar counter as they resumed their observation of the grand hall.
“This must be miserable for you.”
Kara laughed mirthlessly before she met Andrea’s eyes. “It’s fine. I’m fine. I’m happy for her. Them.”
“How long?”
She chewed her lip in thought. She felt like she’d been in love with Lena since the moment they met four years ago, but she wasn’t sure how much more pathetic she would feel in front of Andrea if she admitted that, so she cleared her throat instead. “Too long.”

Are there any deleted scenes/miscellaneous ttsbc things you'd love to share but haven't found the opportunity to yet? This is an open mic to ramble about anything related to ttsbc (if you don't have anything, feel free to ignore this ask)
OHHHHHHHHHH BOY YOU'VE GIVEN ME PERMISSION TO RAMBLE!
Ok ok ok...
Well, there are a couple little things I guess as far as 'deleted' scenes.
I was originally planning on having more heroes in the overcity alongside Scar and then having several other undercity vigilantes and really leaning into that concept. For example Cleo was going to be an older undercity vigilante who worked in the overcity and was helping Grian out as a mentor-type. There was also plans to have guy-in-the-chair Doc, and have him and Cleo be the two people who raised the avian trio. Alongside that, Pearl, Jimmy, Bdubs, and others were going to be vigilantes as well with various gimmicks/power sets.
But then as I was writing I realized I wanted to expand the AU, so I decided to lean more heavily into the idea of having various pairings that all had their own storylines. First up was Flower Husbands, and as I was considering them I decided on the route I ended up taking, with Grian being the only vigilante and having a support network behind him in the form of Pearl and Jimmy. Then it just sorta spiraled. 😆
As for other rambling about stuff I deleted/changed, I've always shipped Doctho but it's kind of a rarepair so I wasn't originally going to include it. Like I said, I was originally going to have Doc and Cleo be the ones who raised the avian trio, with Bdubs and Tango in that mix. The more I thought about it though, I decided that I wanted to have Doctho be the parental figures for the avian trio!
For Doctho, I originally was just planning to drop them as sort of a background thing and not really give them much attention. Just that they were the parental figures for the avian trio. But then people started saying in comments how much they loved Doctho in this AU and that they wanted to see the worldbuilding expand, and learn more about the undercity and it's history, and I thought the best way to do that would be through Doc and Etho and their history together!
And so we got 'Bleeding Sweetheart' and that was really when the ball started rolling on having this AU have an actual plot that is being driven forward by the characters instead of it just being a world for all these characters to exist in. Let me be clear, TTSBC will always be a character driven narrative. If anything is happening, it's for the sake of driving their relationships, both romantically and for the found families we've met, such as the Oddball Family, Cleo and Bdubs, and the Empires family whom we are getting to know right now in 'Blessing in Disguise'!
Anything else to share...I dunno, there's a ton of stuff in this AU. What I have posted so far isn't even half of it which is kinda ridiculous, huh? Theres lots I have planned for the AU! I know right now Traveling Thieves is getting a lot of my attention because of Febuwhump, but I'm really excited to get back to working on TTSBC and continuing it forward! Zedango is one ship I'm really excited to show off, I have a plan for them that I think is really interesting and unique. Not to mention Nature Wives, I haven't forgotten about them, either! So yeah, I guess the conclusion to this ramble is please stick around! I wanna share a whole bunch more of the AU with everyone!
Thanks for coming by 💖

Two Vals, Two Years of Fem V Friday
107 weeks ago, which is just over two years, I made the first Fem V Friday post. I didn't expect it to take off. As a fic smut writer in rarepair hell, I ran a tiny blog. I had barely started taking VP, if you could call it that. I've talked before about bootcamping my MacBook Pro; I did unspeakable things to that poor machine.
I'm """old""". I know I'm older than some of your parents, a fact which inflicts serious psychic anguish at times. I didn't grow up with women as playable characters in video games, or with women as video game characters at all, really. I never got into Lara Croft because I believed she was created for the male gaze, something I could never get past, though I absolutely understand why so many women love her! A woman as the playable hero of the story! At last, someone on the screen who looks like me! Kinda! (Side note: I recently learned from a huge Lara fan that the creator was unhappy with how she became sexualized, and that makes me feel better. Maybe I'll finally give it a try.)
It wasn't until Bioware that I finally got to play the badass women of young Wash's dreams. Given the option, I haven't played a male character since. This past Pride I wrote about my complicated relationship with gender, and having the ability to play as a female character — especially ones that allowed me to express my butch side — is key to my journey.
107 weeks ago, the week that Masc v Monday began, I made a comment or tagged something about being sad there wasn't such a thing for fem Vs. At the time, my dash was full of masc Vs because of who I followed: people who posted male OCs. I was still new to tumblr and hadn't met all of my friends whose Vs wives you see me regularly reblog. So many of the fem Vs who crossed my dash looked like more of the same sexualized characters created for the male gaze. I wanted the ones out there who looked like my own Val; fem Vs who looked like real women.
That following Friday, August 12, I started the tag at someone else's suggestion. I thanked him genuinely for it whenever he commented on the post or reblogged it or however the interaction occurred.
107 weeks ago, I posted Val, and many people responded. Many people reblogged and added on their fem Vs, while others posted separately. I was overwhelmed. I never expected the response I received.
107 weeks later, I still love Fridays. I love seeing all of your fem Vs in all shapes and forms, because I will never get over seeing this representation. I will never tire of seeing all the different female characters that people make.
This is why I made the first Fem V Friday post. I love Fridays, y'all.

I usually grab my AO3 stats for my own personal record-keeping and celebration of achievements on December 31st / January 1st (end of the year) and on August 19th (the day I first started posting), but I was out of town this year on AUG 19 and kept putting it off. (I feel like I've been so, so spacey and busy this year.) So, I'm posting them now! What's a month between me and my blog?
Since my last check-in, I wrote and posted... "Stepping Up" (90,263 words), "First Contact" (7,166 words), and "if words could make wishes" (31,424 words). The "Scum Villain Stories" series is now at 1,216,156 words and 24 fics, which will make "Servant to a Different King" lucky number 25, it seems.
I don't write for the stats and don't track them outside of these little "hey, I should acknowledge the passage of time so it doesn't fall into one big blur" posts, but I think it's neat to take them and hold them up against both specific (SVSSS) and general fandom preferences. (Which fics attract clicks in which fandoms? Why? Why not? It's fun to speculate wildly and possibly wrongly.)
Hm, I really should write more rarepairs so I can broaden and continue my amateur, extremely biased, essentially useless data analysis of these things... (joking) or so I'll say to defend my decision to forcibly drag everyone onto an unusual rarepair ship with me someday (intended humorously, but I am seriously interested in exploring some rare pairings for their own sake). I'll be like a reverse-kraken. Instead of monstrously dragging sailors off the ship and into the depths of the sea, I'll be scooping innocent beach-goers from their swimming and putting them on my boat.

Hi, I'm Twilla and I'm currently in the process of writing a ShigaDeku Dystopia/Soulmate AU fic that no one, and I mean literally NO ONE, asked for! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Why do I always join fandoms late and why do I always somehow end up loving/shipping the rarepairs in fandoms that barely anyone likes or wants to read about lmao? 🥺👉👈
I just finished reading the latest manga chapter, watched all six seasons, and binged all three movies. I am absolutely BURSTING with ideas of where I want this story to go. I want to at least post the first chapter by the time ShigaDeku Week 2024 is here next month. :)
In my fic timeline, the MHA canon story line doesn't happen until Class 1-A's third year, and since my story is set six years after their graduation, most of the main characters are in their mid to late twenties. My story starts after the Quirk Affliction, a strange illness that begins killing off Quirk-users all around to world, resulting in a massive a death toll that causes civilized society to collapse.
Anyways, here's the general synopsis:
The Final War was over before it had even begun. With the onset of the Quirk Affliction, a mysterious illness that disproportionately targeted the Quirks of heroes over the Quirks of villains, the world was left defenseless as it plunged into a new era of chaos and devastation.
It’s been six years since the onset of the Affliction and the death of All Might. Six years since the world’s heroes, and the society they desperately fought to protect, crumbled into dust in Shigaraki Tomura’s hands.
From the ashes of this destruction, Japan’s new regime was born. The country was split into three territories, each with its own Grand Commander, united in nothing save for one singular rule: life for those who submit, and death for those who do not.
As Grand Commander of the largest and most plentiful of Japan’s territories, Shigaraki has lived the last six years reaping the fruits of his labors and taking pride in helping his Sensei accomplish his dream. But as of late, Tomura has been having strange dreams of his own: hazy memories of an abandoned park, of blooming wisteria trees, of laughter and freckles and forest green eyes.
Midoriya Izuku, now Quirkless due to the Affliction, has not stopped his pursuit of helping others, despite the world — and everything in it — turning itself upside down. Izuku dreams of a brighter future, and strangely enough, dreams of his long-lost childhood friend, Shimura Tenko.
The same Tenko that Izuku had unknowingly befriended as a young boy. The same Tenko who’d stopped him from jumping off the rooftop all those years ago. The same Tenko that, Izuku realized with horror, was now the monster known as Shigaraki Tomura.
Unfortunately, Izuku learns all too late that having a Soulbond with the King of Villains comes with a heavy cost. Shigaraki seems hell-bent on keeping Izuku as close to him as possible, believing Izuku to be his Soulmate, and thus, Shigaraki’s only true weakness, stirring up an ill-fated romance that neither has prepared themselves for.
As a new calamity encroaches upon them in the form of a mad man attempting to become a god, the heroes and villains must find a way to work together and solve the mystery of the Affliction before it destroys the world and everything they hold dear.
✨ P l e a s e ✨ let me know if you're interested in hearing about this by either, liking, reblogging, or sending me a PM. I'm working really hard to get the first chapter of this out by ShigaDeku Week 2024 in May!
Thank you so much for reading. 💚💚💚

Okay, I’ll bite. Posts like this one on the confessions blog kind of make me wonder/worry about how I come across on tumblr. I’m one of those people who’s 200% down for the secondary characters in YR, particularly the controversial ones. I’m also someone who’d been lurking for a while prior to season 2 airing, but joined tumblr a little bit after season 2 to finally start discussing with people.
Given the way the post I linked above resonates with some of the themes I made a post about few days ago, it seems like the anon and I might both be struggling with some of the patterns of conversation in fandom. That said, we’re coming from very different places. And given the way I engage with this fandom, I sometimes wonder if I’m the antagonist in someone’s fandom story.
I do recognize that some of my posts come from a place where I could come across as pretentious, lecturing, or overbearing in some way. When I first de-lurked this fandom, I talked about a lot of the show in terms of craft and literary theory and such, in part because I’m in grad school for just that and in part because I hang out with a friends group IRL who uses that existing vocabulary to discuss things we love. I was also using the academic voice with a dose of sarcasm thrown in as a sort of armor, because I knew my favorite characters in the show (Sara and August) were so widely beloathed by so many people. I was worried that if my first post was “wow they sure are cute even if they’re messy; where do I find the fanfic?” I wouldn’t make friends, or possibly would even get chased off of tumblr. I figured it was much safer to come in and say things like “I find it really interesting to see how their relationship is a narrative foil to Wilmon’s, and them being together really raises the stakes of the drama” and keep my Big Feelings to myself. (Especially since some posters can be pretty nasty about my faves, and make assumptions about what I’m an “apologist” for when I talk about them.) I still lean into academic speak to some extent—like I said, it’s part of who I am even outside of YR, so it’s hard to shake. But rest assured there is fannish passion behind it, and also know I don’t think academic speak should be a requirement for participating in fandom.
I’m also wondering… what role should making the case for the characters and plotlines one loves play in establishing one’s fandom presence? Like, in general? Ultimately my motive when I make my posts, analysis or otherwise, is to invite people to play in my weird little sandbox with me. (If they want to, of course!) I recognize that some of my fandom opinions/hills I will die on are what they are, so I imagine some folks don’t want to change their opinions any more than I do. But I also recognize that in more than two decades of being in fandom, there are times when someone else’s passion for a character or a take on some aspect of a show or book really led me to see something new and interesting, or hook on to particular rarepairs or whatever else. That’s the beauty of fandom as a community—we all get more excited about things together and share our love of things. Since some of my favorite aspects of YR are much much more rarely represented in fanworks, I’m usually talking about how I adore them in hopes that I’ll continue to find the people who like the things I like, and in hopes that maybe I’ll spark something in someone’s brain and they’ll write a cool fic or draw cool art or something. Talking to people here has made me more interested in pairings like Walty and Stedrika, which I didn’t think about as much before on my first watchthroughs of the show. So anyway… I do know there’s some folks out there who are never gonna be interested in what I’m interested in. I also know there are folks, myself included, who’ve learned things from what other people are passionate about. I also know there are some opinions that seem a lot more unpopular than they are until someone voices them.
I recognize that the two factors above—a tendency toward academic speak, and another tendency to make the case for the less popular things I love about the show in hopes that people will join me, combined with maybe me not having the best day or not choosing my words well—all that together and I could I see how I could come across as pretentious or holier-than-thou or looking down on people. (And admittedly there are times where my posts come from a place of frustration about the way certain characters are talked about. I think we’ve all been there at one time or another.) It really isn’t my intention to come across in a negative way, but I can see how it would happen. It’s also possible I’m doing something that completely doesn’t register with me at all, but it’s super hurtful to others. I may not know the full extent to how I’ve bothered someone, because ultimately I am just in my own head.
If I’ve hurt you or made you feel crappy in your time being a fan on tumblr, I am truly sorry. I’m open to talking about it if you want to talk about it, but also, zero pressure if you just kind of want to hang out in your own space and do your own thing.
To sum up… it seems like on one hand there’s a portion of fandom that seems to want to embrace the YR world in its entirety, and another portion of fandom that would like to lean into a focus on Wilmon. And there’s probably people all across a spectrum there, because nothing is a strict binary. All are valid approaches! I don’t think we all need to be best friends, but I do think we need to figure out how to coexist and assume positive intent in each other’s approaches to the work. Does anyone have ideas about that? Are there hashtags we could be using a little more carefully? I don’t have answers yet, but it is something I’m thinking about.

My Reverse: 1999 Rarepairs/crackships!
Exactly what it says in the title! I’ve seen a couple other people talk about their favorite rarepairs for r1999, so I thought I’d do it for mine!!
(Technically some of these are just characters I think would interact well, not all of them have to be romantic) (and also not all of them are super duper rare)
An-An Lee x Poltergeist
- I just really like the ghost enthusiast x ghost dynamic in general, this counts for horropedia and An-An Lee with any of the ghost characters tbf
- But An-An Lee and Poltergeist specifically would be cool because of their personalities!!
- Poltergeist is obviously more shy, while An-An Lee seems a bit more outspoken, and I can really see An-An Lee helping Poltergeist help gain confidence!
- Either way, very cute dynamic and I like it a lot!
Tennant x Sweetheart
- Originally, Sweetheart was my main theory for who the other character in Tennants I2 Portrait, along with maybe Mesmer Jr.
- While I definitely don’t think it is anymore, I still like the concept of them having a relationship!
- Tennant would definitely be in it to scam Sweetheart, but I think Sweetheart would at least know some of it due to her being familiar with Hollywood secrets and the drama that goes down there
- If they did become “partners in crime” I think they would legitimately be the best power-couple ever. I just don’t know if there would ever be a scenario where they both show their cards, so I don’t know if they’d ever reach that point sadly.
- Their rich girlboss energy knows no bounds, and together they will be unstoppable
Sweetheart x Bette
- Actor x Stunt double, just another fun concept!! (I saw a similar idea with Blonney and Bette as well, which would also be cool!)
- Sweetheart is sassy and assertive but befriends her innocent stunt double and takes her to Hollywood parties
- Bette is so confused but Sweetheart is her idol so it’s not like she’s going to say no
- It would basically be like the sassy popular girl falls in love with nerd/shy girl trope, Hollywood edition
- I think they would be very cute though!
ONiON x TTT
- The only news station TTT isn’t sick of
- She was actually covered by one of ONiON’s stories, and she’s been a big fan ever since!
- When ONiON meets her, they hit it off immediately!
- Both of them have different brands of eccentric show host vibes and I’m here for it
AliEn T x Sputnik
- The space besties
- Sputnik literally references AliEn T’s lines, what can I say
- Mostly just them lying to each other about exactly what/who they are to hilarious results
Bkornblume x Click
- Sitting as silence as we speak (consider each other their best friends and know each other really well despite this)
- There’s really no other special reason, I just think they’d get along!!
Constantine x Vertin’s Mom
- Not super rare technically
- There is no info on it but it’s both a super interesting and very funny concept
- I saw a post a while ago about the parallels between Madame Z, Constantine, and Vertin’s Mom to Matilda, Sonetto, and Vertin, and it was really cool!
Regulus x X
- Technically this one I like more as a friendship, but I still want to talk about it
- Regulus hung out with X for longer than she did Vertin, there’s no way they aren’t at least somewhat friends
- They’re both sneakily coming up with ideas of pranking people with machines (They were both definitely giggling at the idea of pouring tea on Forget-me-not)
- Silly little goobers, mostly

We need to have a talk about @sjmcrackshipmonth and the labeling of crackships in this fandom in general. Yes I am tagging this month specifically because I had a conversation with them about this already, that seemingly did not stick and this time it's gotten a little more personal. What's more is that it's a problem that's not just unique to this blog, but a concept that this fandom seems to struggle with
About a month ago, I messaged this blog raising some concerns regarding their tagging on their announcement post. They had tagged Emorie and Azris, which are two of the most LGBT prominent rarepairs in the fandom. I didn't really feel good seeing that a month for crackships had tagged two LGBT ships that are not crackships. I'm going to get a bit technical here, but please stick with me.
Fanlore defines a crackship as "is a ship that is highly ridiculous, bizarre, disturbing, and/or unlikely to ever become canon. The characters don't have any chemistry, never interact, are in different canons or timelines, are different species, one is an inanimate object, etc. Fans can and do sincerely ship a crack ship, but generally they don't take its chances too seriously and may like it precisely for its implausibility."
I understand that this month is for fun, and I love a good crackship. But seeing those LGBT ships labeled as something with that definition? As somebody in the LGBT community who loves to see the tiny bits of representation on the page we do get, I wasn't a fan of seeing a crackship blog in the tags. Hence why I messaged them last month and explained my problem.
Tumblr media
The runner was very polite, and we had a discussion on the use of the term crackship, and why I felt it was inappropriate to tag those ships and include them in the month.
Tumblr media
I understand they have good intentions with this, but I pointed out that they had a different route to go. Emorie and Azris were not the only rarepairs tagged, which is why I do believe this person was being earnest about their reasoning, but they were the ones that rubbed me the wrong way.
Tumblr media
I was trying very hard not to come off as attacking this runner, especially after their explanation. I know crackship is used fast and loose in this fandom, especially considering many artists are doing 'crackships' on their patreons and whatnot that are really just rarepairs, and not just LGBT ones. But there is a serious problem with calling LGBT rarepairs crackships when LGBT ships are so scarce in this fandom. People call ships crackships just because they don't like them, or it doesn't match their own personal ideas of what will happen in canon. Which is extremely not cool, but seemingly not the intent behind this blog, and I'm not saying that, I'm just pointing out it's a real problem in this fandom. It’s one of many casual forms of homophobia that we throw around
But the problem came to a head yesterday. I had previously discussed this blog with @ofduskanddreams, who is a pretty prominent (and amazing) Azris content creator, because the tags also rubbed her the wrong way, but they were resolved and I had heard back from the runner that they would abstain from involving Emorie and Azris in their month.
Tumblr media
That is the entirety of our conversation in all those pictures, including their promise to avoid using Emorie and Azris in the month. Everything was fine until yesterday when Kate realized they had reblogged one of her Azris moodboards. She didn't like that, and didn't want her content for a rarepair that she puts time and effort into to be thrown onto a crackship blog.
Tumblr media
This was sent yesterday, more than 24 hours ago, not long after crackship month reblogged her post. As you can see, there is no response and the post remains on the blog. It was frustrating enough that in the span of a month, this person completely forgot or decided to ignore what I thought was a meaningful conversation, but now they're just blatantly ignoring a creator's wishes regarding their content. It's not okay.
I understand that people have lives off of tumblr. Outside of running months. But if you're going to take on the responsibility of a month, you need to be accountable, and you need to respect creators. Especially creators' wishes not to be involved. Especially when a creator doesn't agree with how their content is being portrayed in its involvement.
I don't know who's running crackship month. I don't know what their life is like off of tumblr. But I do know that this whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth regarding the event and the runner. I'm not saying people can't participate in crackship month, nor am I saying they shouldn't. But I think you should be mindful of your content that you include in it and what you label it as, and even more mindful of how you treat other peoples' content.
Azris is not a crackship. Emorie is not a crackship. Tamcien, Rhyslin, Rhycien, FeyMor, Gwynesta, Morlain, so many others. None of these are crackships. Your LGBT ships are not crackships simply because they are not canon. And people need to stop labeling them as such, whether it's because people are just being outright hateful - which is oftentimes homophobic as well - or because people don't know what a crackship is anymore.
Edit: the runner has responded here and here and I encourage you to read their responses. Again, this was never intended to imply this runner was being purposefully harmful, or doing this with ill intent. It has simply been a long-running issue in this fandom that I wanted to acknowledge.

i want to get more into saw/saw blogs b4 X comes out - what r some of ur fave saw blogs
Hi! You caught me at a good time (one where I have energy) so let's see if I can pump this out. I am in no way an authority on the entire Saw fandom so I will only be talking about my little corner of the internet. Please forgive me, my beloved followers, mutuals, and other owners of posts I have loved in this very small fandom-because I may forget some of you. The brain fog sometimes gets the best of me and if I did a full complete list, it would be.... It would be so long. This is in no way in order of best or worst, and sometimes I just have no words for why I love a person's blog.
@turnipoddity - Oh, what an artist! Every single post I see, love it. So excited to see an artist acquiring the Saw brainrot.
@bloodcoveredgf - Luna! Also just all around funny & good posts in addition to the Saw insanities.
@dracofelin - Jay has such good writing, and will make you love the ship of Mark Hoffman/Peter Strahm (coffinshipping).
@thefoulbeast - Simply put, Will's art makes me want to bite my own arm off. If you're interested in the video game Pathologic, his blog is worth a follow for that too.
@bathroomtrapped - I sometimes get the honor of previewing Larry's art mid-construction (because with all those colors and layers, it looks like building a house) and even half finished, it blows my socks off <3
@sawtrapz - Kaz, oh Kaz (!!!), Kaz gets my brain clicking about some of the rarepairs of this fandom and I will always spin your boygirl Adam in my head.
@cl0wnb0yyy - Will is just a great person in the fandom, also if you like Midnight Mass or NBC's Hannibal.
@ispyspookymansion - Kora looms large in the Saw fandom in my mind so it would be impossible to assemble this list without him.
@3razyswfangirl / @kiramillet - Kira's pixel art is amazing!!! Bunny <3
@tibby - Take a look through Tibby's saw meta. You won't be disappointed.
@allegedly-writer - Contrary to Jack's url, Jack can sure damn write! He just posted a fic and guess who it's for <3

What is writing advice you would give to someone just starting out?
ohhh you know i love to talk about WRITING. this is mainly geared at people just starting out writing fanfic but most of it can probably be applied to original fiction and other types of writing too 💕
first of all: be patient with yourself. like all other skills, writing is something that takes practice to get good at! i've been writing for YEARS and am still constantly learning and growing as a writer. if you're just starting out and you find yourself getting frustrated that the stuff on the page doesn't match the stuff in your head, it does NOT mean you're bad at writing. it just means you need more practice. do you think the first fanfics i wrote were good? no, they were incoherent and you will never find them.
write about things that you're excited to write about. whether this is the most popular pairing in the fandom or a rarepair you made up on your own, go with your passion! i know this can be hard because everyone wants the higher amount of comments and kudos that comes with posting popular pairings, but i promise that writing something you're excited about is like step one in getting yourself to write regularly. literally if you read a story you love and think "i want to write a story like that" then write a story like that! figure out how to take the things you loved in it and make it your own. drop the author a note and say they inspired you!
take all writing advice with a grain of salt. i watch a lot of writing advice videos on youtube, and i read craft books and articles on writing craft, and i've learned a ton of stuff from those over the years, but i've also learned that it's totally okay for me to be like "actually i think i disagree" and do it my way. (this does not apply to basic punctuation and grammar tho. please learn those, or get a beta reader who knows them really well. and then you can tactically decide if/when you want to break the rules sometimes.)
everyone has their own writing process. you can watch a million youtube videos on outlining but if outlining just doesn't work for you, videos aren't going to fic that! i used to outline a lot and now i mostly discovery write (i find the term "pantser" so unserious, lol). it took me a long time to develop a writing process that worked for me, and it'll take you some time, too, so don't be afraid to try new things and then set them back down if you're not working for you.
READ. read read read!!! do not just read fanfiction. do not just read the kind of thing you want to write. read WIDELY. and think about the writing while you're reading! if a fic or book is doing something really well, think about what's making it work. if it's doing something that you don't like, think about why it's rubbing you the wrong way and/or how you would fix it. i always say that even if i wind up not loving a book, i always learn something from it, craft-wise, so i very rarely feel like i wasted my time.
TALK about writing with your friends!! i know this one can be tough if you don't already have friends who are into writing, but i am so serious about it. buddy-read books or fics together and then get together afterward to talk about how you felt about the writing, the plot, the characters, the story as a whole. find someone(s) who will let you bounce your own writing ideas off of them, and who will read as you write to cheer you on and help you with tough spots. do the same for them if they want it! writing is such a solitary act that you have to be deliberate about building community around it, and having that community is so worth it.
on feedback: yes, having someone beta read your story can be pretty nerve-wracking. i have (once again) been writing for years and i still get nervous sending something off to be beta'd. but! having a beta reader you trust is so good for your writing. sometimes it really does just take a second set of eyes to spot typos, find plot holes, call you out on writing quirks and habits that you can't see for yourself because you're too deep in it. and it definitely helps to have a friend whose taste and skill level you trust to help make your story better. have a conversation with your beta beforehand to discuss what kind of feedback you're looking for, the timetable for how long they think the beta reading is going to take, how harsh or gentle they should try to make their feedback. if you're nervous about getting a lot of suggested edits, ask them to point out things they really like in the story as well.
OH ALSO. it's totally fine if you're struggling a lot with a story to just set it down for a while and work on something else. as you keep writing, you'll get better at figuring out what kind of writer's block you can beat by pushing through and what kind you need to deal with by just giving a story time to percolate more.
ok i think that's all i've got tonight. 💖

An Imogen/Otohan "drabble" (it's actually almost 2k)
Entitled:
"Imogen and Otohan Do the Silly Spider-Man Kiss But the Author Takes It Way Too Seriously"
(all because @inomakani gave me a silly prompt and I just kept working on it whenever my brain was too tired to focus on other WIPs. I'm posting this only on tumblr because I refuse for for my tenth published Imogen/Otohan work to be this bullshit lol)
EDIT: I forgot to mention that this is set in my Let Me/Won't You AU (which, If you keep up with this rarepair at all, you likely already know; if this is your first glimpse of the ship, allow me to apologize in advance).
~
"So you're the reason I woke up with a racing heart," Imogen mutters.
She gingerly leans back against a short tree, mindful of rough bark scraping her skin through the fabric of her sleep shirt. Tired eyes sweep across her surroundings, squinting to try and discern more shapes in the darkness.
A small camp has been set up in a copse of small trees and scraggly shrubbery. The remains of a fire smolder nearby, set in a shallow scrape dug into the dirt and cleared of any surrounding foliage that could catch fire.
The glowing ashes provide far less light than Ruidus: the ruddy moon sits ominously in the sky, close enough to give the distinct impression of lurking over one's shoulder rather than perched on the distant horizon. Gently undulating ley lines sprawl across the sky, converging at the bright beam of energy that leashes the moon to Exandria. Judging the distance, they can't be too far from the Key. Imogen glances down, gently dragging a sock-clad toe against the Hellcatch Valley's signature dry and craggy earth. Crimson moonglow filters through the sparse foliage, dappling the dusty ground like blood splatter on skin.
Imogen raises her gaze to the only other person present: Otohan is not far from the fire and a deserted bedroll, half stripped of their armor as if they had considered getting at least a little comfortable before abandoning the notion entirely. Their cloak and extraneous bits of armor have been removed, leaving Otohan in hide leggings and a fitted, padded tank, clearly meant to protect vital organs from injury. They look like they had every intention of getting some rest, but they are the furthest thing from settled. Instead, they're doing honest-to-gods push-ups in the early morning hours.
Otohan barely spares Imogen a glance as they push themselves back up from their near-prone position, palms protected from shale and grit by their customary fingerless gloves.
"And you're the reason I couldn't sleep to begin with," they huff. "Anxiety plagues you even in sleep, you know."
Imogen can't help but snort slightly at that. "I'm well aware—nice to know someone else suffers with me, though," she mutters.
Otohan gives no response as they push themselves to stand, adjusting their stance and sinking into a squat.
Imogen shoves herself off the tree, strolling to the campfire and prodding the embers with a nearby stick. Otohan's gaze is heavy on her as Imogen turns and plops down onto Otohan's bedroll. She reaches for a crumpled sheet at the foot of the bedroll, likely kicked aside at some point.
"What're you doing out in the middle of the desert anyway?" Imogen shakes the blanket out, watching as a cloud of dust falls from the rough-cut hemline. "Last I heard, you were the moon's guard dog or somethin'," she says snidely, folding the cloth in half and over itself again neatly simply to do something with her hands. When she glances back to Otohan, they have not paused their routine, though they hold Imogen's gaze with a level stare.
"Is there a specific reason you're still gracing me with your company?" Otohan asks, ignoring Imogen's jab.
Imogen sets the sheet aside, considering why she did choose to sit down rather than simply leave. Otohan stands fully, shaking their legs out one at a time before lifting their arms over their head. They bend one elbow to clasp the opposite, leaning into the arc their arm creates to give their side a long stretch. Then, they swap arms and do the same with the opposite side.
Imogen admittedly watches, trailing her gaze from Otohan's fingertips down their arms, tracing over flexing biceps to broad shoulders.
It's strange to see a glimpse of Otohan's routine—to know that the person who ruthlessly killed Orym coincidentally has a similar habit of doing push-ups when they can't sleep.
"I guess it's sort of, I don't know, novel to see you just existing," she mutters, a subtle frown twisting her features.
Otohan audibly snorts. "Did you think I spend all my time standing around ominously?"
Imogen rolls her eyes as Otohan turns away, striding toward the largest tree (which really isn't saying much) in this patch of scraggly foliage. They swing their arms in a few wide but controlled arcs, then abruptly leap upward.
It's interesting—during that awful day in Bassuras, Imogen had assumed Otohan darted around the street using some modified form of flight, or maybe even with the contraption on their back. But without the heat of battle to distract, Imogen can plainly feel the source of Otohan's enhanced ability.
Imogen's own powers always come with a strange sort of lightness—a skin-tingling sensation that accompanies every arc of lightning and telekinetic shove. It's a feeling that races through her bloodstream and sparks on the back of her tongue, raising the hairs on her arms as all that power seemingly strains to escape her.
But with Otohan, their power has a palpable weight. In the second before Otohan jumps, when both their feet are planted on the ground, Imogen leans forward ever so slightly against her will, pulled in by a subtle sense of gravity that seems to originate from Otohan themself. When they launch themself upward, all that gathered force expands, sweeping over Imogen like shockwaves, burrowing into her bones and reverberating through her form. Otohan isn't weaving a spell with the mysterious magic assumedly shared by all Exaltants; they're shaping their will into a concentrated force and physically exerting it.
It's subtle, but in the late night quiet, every little nuance and fleeting sensation strikes like bells in Imogen's skull before ringing throughout her frame, leaving her strangely dizzy from the feeling of powers so different from her own, shared through the strange connection between them.
All so Otohan can cover an unnatural height in one leap and grab hold of one of the tree's thicker branches. They adjust their grip, and then they start doing pull-ups.
As Imogen shakes off the subtle, lingering sensation of Otohan's magic, flexing her fingers and swallowing as if to expel or smother it. She admittedly studies Otohan. She trails her eyes over markings her fingertips had already been acquainted with, matching the memory of how they had felt beneath her hands with the sight before her now. Twisting crimson scars splay out from beneath the straps of Otohan's shirt, spreading across their shoulders and climbing up the nape of their neck, shifting and writhing as the muscles beneath contract. Shrouded in darkness and dappled with moonlight, the markings glint like raw wounds against Otohan's dark skin.
"Now you're just showing off," Imogen drawls.
Otohan actually huffs a laugh at that. "This isn't showing off," they toss over their shoulder.
They hang there and adjust their grip until their hands are spread further than the width of their shoulders, and then they lift their legs, curling their knees up to their chest. Arms flexing, they slowly lean backward, rotating like a wheel and bringing their knees up through their arms. Extending their legs, they securely hook their knees over the branch and let go, keeping their elbows tucked close to their sides as they steadily lower themselves until they fully hang upside down.
"This is showing off," they say pointedly, tone flat even as the faintest smirk curls at the corner of their lips. They then do a literal sit-up, engaging their core and keeping their back as straight as they can as they slowly curl upward until their chin nearly touches their knees.
Imogen snorts aloud. "You're ridiculous," she says, vaguely bewildered by just how true the statement is as Otohan lowers themself and arches an eyebrow at her. Silver curls hang freely, exposing more of those crimson markings along the sides of Otohan's neck that would otherwise be concealed beneath their cloak and armor.
Otohan only shoots Imogen a subtle, shockingly playful smirk as they do another sit-up, then another. Imogen watches with furrowed brows, repressing a rebellious grin. Otohan's shirt shifts and falls little by little with each crunch, soon exposing their belly button, which protrudes ever so slightly.
"Oh my god, you have an outie," Imogen exclaims before she can stop herself.
Otohan pauses (still upside down), staring at Imogen in confusion as they stretch their arms and arch their back. "Yes?"
"Weird," Imogen murmurs—not that Otohan's belly button is weird, more so that knowing about it is oddly unnerving. It's yet more proof that Otohan is a person as much as they are a monster. "You can stop showing off now."
Otohan's bemused expression morphs into a smirk as they pointedly do another sit-up.
When they do yet another, Imogen exerts her own power, holding Otohan in place.
Otohan's eyebrows raise in surprise, but their smirk takes on a challenging tilt—that feral edge Imogen finds preferable simply because it's predictable.
As Otohan tries to push through, Imogen clenches her jaw and twists her fingers in the worn fabric of Otohan's bedroll, leaning forward slightly as she focuses on keeping Otohan held fast.
Slowly but surely, Otohan steadily curls upward. Abdominal muscles strain to fight the added pressure, and Otohan grits their teeth and breathes sharply through their nose with the effort. When it becomes apparent that Otohan will eventually break through, Imogen abruptly releases her hold over them.
Otohan grunts as they snap upward, nearly knocking their chin against their knees and losing their balance enough that they have to grip the branch with one hand to catch themself.
Imogen barks a surprised laugh and shoves herself upright, only to bend over when she can't quite stop laughing, stifled chuckles escaping between each lungful of air.
That invisible force, that strange sense of gravity, suddenly reasserts itself, clamping down around Imogen's navel and nearly yanking her feet out from under her as Otohan drags her across the short distance between them. The only reason she doesn't trip is that Otohan hastily catches her, hands momentarily unsure where to land from their odd angle but assuredly gripping her biceps once they do find purchase.
"You think you're so funny," Otohan huffs, and Imogen grins despite herself as she meets their weak glare, noting the way their eyes crinkle from a barely repressed smile.
"Says the one who's smiling," Imogen points out. She reaches out to tug one of those dangling curls before she can think better of it, and then she immediately wants to slap herself for doing something so stupidly silly.
"Now who's ridiculous," Otohan mutters. Yet they loosen their grip on Imogen's arms, fingers skimming up to weave through the ends of her hair. They don't tug, though they might just consider it, Imogen thinks, as Otohan's gaze darts all over her face, lingering on her lips.
Again, Imogen acts before she thinks. She leans in and gives Otohan a quick peck on the lips.
Otohan's vaguely amused expression falls into absolute bewilderment. Imogen's playfulness dies at the expression as reality rushes back in: yes, they are both ridiculous, but that fleeting, practically innocent kiss is downright preposterous.
Imogen flushes in embarrassment and starts to pull away, only for Otohan to slip their hands up and around to the back of her neck, tangling their fingers in her hair and tugging her back. Lips meet clumsily, slotting together rather awkwardly from the unfamiliar angle. Noses bump against chins as the two of them expel twin huffs of surprise—Imogen at Otohan and Otohan at their own actions, apparently.
Imogen automatically reaches up, fingers finding purchase in silver curls, thumbs swiping across the sharp hollows of Otohan's cheeks. It only takes a moment of adjustment before awkwardness morphs to assurance, before hands grip tight and lips move with purpose. It's ridiculous, and Imogen doesn't allow herself to linger on that fact as she kisses Otohan back.

Cupid's Needles eddie munson / nancy wheeler
rated teen & up, transmasc eddie munson, transfem nancy wheeler, established relationship, domestic fluff, needles, sexual humor, eddie's first hormone shot
read on archive of our own
Tumblr media
wrote this on another account once upon a time. i thought i'd rewrite it for the roulette event and post it to my new platforms since my pairing was edancy. i just love them, your honor. i wanted to a fic centered around the insecurity that sometimes comes with transitioning. a lot of people will often get in your head and make you doubt your own intuition and feelings, making certain aspects of transitioning conflicting and sometimes upsetting. i don't really see a lot of people implementing that in trans fics, so i figured i would since it's something i've struggled with heavily in the past. their dynamic is loosely based on my girlfriend and i. my girlfriend isn't trans, but we've definitely had interactions that bear a striking resemblance of this. she's my rock, so this is dedicated to her. after everything i've been through recently, she's never left my side. i love you, baby.
for the @st-rarepair-roulette and @californiaboytoybilly.

"Stop moving," Nancy chastised, pulling the needle away from Eddie's skin for the umpteenth time and meeting his eyes. "I don't wanna actually hurt you."
Eddie, however, was still cowering in his chair. He had a pillow from there bed hugged tightly to his chest like a child, leering down at his girlfriend with cautious eyes. "You could've fooled me, sweetheart."
An amused grin splits Nancy's face at that. "Eddie, I do this every week on myself. I'm basically a professional."
And, to Nancy's credit, she did. And she was. She had been taking estrogen shots for the last two years without ever needing help. She worked her hormone administrations into her self-care routine seamlessly, as if it were as simple as brushing her teeth.
Except Nancy wasn't utterly terrified of needles.
Eddie groaned, pressing his face into the plush cushion against his chest. "Why is this so hard?" His voice comes out muffled, but the whine is still evident in his tone.
Nancy snickered at him, rubbing the expanse of his exposed thigh comfortingly. "I have no clue, especially when you look like a walking advertisement for tattoo shops everywhere."
"Hey!" Eddie's head shot up rapidly, eyes wide like she'd just said the most unbelievable thing in the world. "That's not the same!"
Her brows cocked upwards in playful curiosity. "How is it not the same?"
"Because," Eddie held out his hands to make vague gestures at her. "Tattoos are like... It's not even...They're two totally different..." His words trailed off as his face crumbled in defeat.
Nancy's gaze softened to something sickeningly fond, giving his leg a squeeze as she kissed his knee. "Do you trust me?"
It was then that Eddie's body relaxed, even if only by a margin. She always seemed to have that effect on him.
After a moment of thinking, Eddie nodded. "A ridiculous amount, unfortunately."
Nancy seemed pleased with that answer, extending her free hand to him. "Here, hold this for me."
Eddie looked between her hand and her entirely-too-calm expression, offense written on his features. "If you think I'm letting you do this one-handed, you're actually crazy."
It was then that she gave him a stern look. "Theodore James Munson, if you don't take my hand right now, I'll actually stab you and get this over with. Pick your poison."
To absolutely no one's surprise, Eddie's hand found hers without further complaint.
With a pleased hum, Nancy gave his hand a squeeze. "Good boy."
Eddie whined again, a burn building in his cheeks. "You're so mean."
"You make it so easy." She teased, starting to rub his knuckles with the pad of her thumb. "Now, can you close your eyes for me?"
Eddie tried to think of a retort to that as well, but after seeing the look in her eyes, he knew arguing was futile. His eyes fall closed at her command.
Eddie felt her lips meet his fingers, gentle kisses scattering the skin there. "You look really handsome today." Nancy mumbled, resting their hands on his unoccupied thigh.
For the first time in the past thirty minutes, Eddie smiled, almost opening his eyes to properly look at her and respond. However, he's met with a swift correction.
"I said eyes closed!"
Eddie was quick to squeeze them closed again. "Sorry, sorry." He placated. "I was just gonna say I think you look beautiful."
He could practically hear her smile as she spoke again. "Yeah? Tell me what's beautiful about me."
"Is that negative self-talk I hear?"
"Humor me."
Eddie huffed, trying to sift through the thousands of examples to pull from. "Well," He started, lips tugging into another grin. "You have beautiful eyes. Your hair always seems to look good no matter what you do to it. I'm convinced your smile could cure any worldly ailment. You're so much more talented than you give yourself credit for. Not to be a freak, but you have a nice collarbo- ah-"
A sudden sharp pinch hit the outside of his thigh, making his face pinch. He drew a shaky, hissing breath, trying his best to keep his eyes shut and off of the needle now piercing his flesh.
But, almost as quickly as it happened, it was over. It took him a few moments to convince himself to look, but when he did, all he saw was the love of his life applying a comically fitting Spider-Man bandage to the injection site.
Nancy set the spent materials aside, looking up at Eddie lovingly. "You can't take back anything you said, or you're sleeping on the couch."
But her tease fell on deaf ears, Eddie's attention zeroed in on his leg. A concoction of emotion swirled in his mind and chest, trying to grapple with the reality that he was finally transitioning. All the hard work he'd put in this past year, all the doctor's appointments, all the therapy sessions. It all led to this.
"Hey." Nancy tried to pull his attention back, voice gentler. "Baby, look at me."
Eddie finally met her gaze again, a new fear settling behind his eyes. Nancy's brows pinched in concern. "Where'd you go just then?"
When Eddie doesn't respond, she pressed again, more insistently. "Talk to me."
It took Eddie several moments to form the words sitting hesitantly on his tongue, hanging his head down for a moment. When he does muster the courage, his voice remains meek and quiet compared to before.
"What if... this doesn't fix it?"
Nancy couldn't hide her confusion if she tried. "Fix what, Eddie?"
"It." He answered, more confidently this time, setting the pillow on the kitchen table. "What if I'm still unhappy? What if I'm..." The word was lodged in his mouth, like a gag.
What if I'm wrong?
Finally picking up on his line of thinking, Nancy exhaled a long breath she'd been holding, shaking her head. "Eddie," She squeezed his hand again, firmer than before. "I've known you for five years. I know you can't leave the house without a binder on or you have a panic attack. Anytime you hear your deadname, you recoil. Your whole mood sours if someone uses the wrong pronouns for you. You went through three therapists and seven different doctors just to get the shot I just gave you. At no point did you have doubts. You were counting down the days until your prescription was written for you like it was your own birthday."
Despite all of this, Eddie didn't seem to let go of the insecurity, face still riddled with solemn worry. He hung his head again, starting to sink into his spiraling thoughts.
Until he feels a delicate hand against his jaw, guiding his face back upward. Nancy kept her hand there, holding his head up like he couldn't do so himself. "And if you are wrong? Then you are. If you're right now, but it changes later, then it changes. It doesn't make any of this pointless, or a mistake. This isn't a point of no return. If things end up differently than you pictured it, we can work to get you comfortable again."
The tension started to leave Eddie's body, melting into her touch like they were always meant to be one. Nancy brought her other hand up to his cheek, cupping his face like a prized object to be handled with the utmost care. "I was there for you through your entire coming out journey. Telling Wayne, and the party, and our friends. I was there then, I'm here now, and I'm not going anywhere. Not ever."
Eddie, at an utter loss of words as his panic dissipates into thin air, leaned down to capture Nancy's lips in a romantic kiss. She sighed into his mouth, carefully moving from her crouched position to slide carefully into his lap. His arms snaked around her waist lazily, pulling her as close as their bodies would allow.
After a few moments of the both of them basking in the domestic bliss that seemed to blanket the room every time they were together, Eddie parted their lip, eyes completely latched onto Nancy in utter adoration. "You gotta do that whole thing every time, though."
Nancy grinned again. "Does that include the twenty minute period where all you did was babble into the pillow anytime I tried to touch you?"
"I mean, you can start tying me to the bed if you think it'd help-"
Nancy smacked his chest as giggles bubbled up Eddie's throat, writhing around in his touch with no real intention of escaping it. "You're an idiot."
