I am going to have to reread to double check this but another aspect of Percy losing control in cotg that's so worrying is his fear that he could have inadvertently hurt (or killed) Annabeth, cause like, he's never thought that before, has he? Not even at his worst in Tartarus. So again, Riordan has not just characterized Percy as someone who's angry and spiraling and losing control, but now has added the aspect where Percy is afraid of hurting or even killing his loved ones on accident. But then in the book its just like haha that's our Percy what a guy!!!! like???? hello??? the kid's not alright???

Keep thinking about Dungeon Meshi not bc I know anything about it but bc of what I've seen on my for you. Like. ngl ive always enjoyed how the stuff with philip/belos’ brother adds another layer of nuance to the story by showing that belos is a monster specifically for his own choices.

if the brother didn’t exist you could imagine people making excuses for belos by saying that he’s a product of his time, and that he doesn’t know any better. Except, the brother, who we now are almost 100% certain was named caleb, did know better. or rather, he allowed himself to change, and learn better. 

The two of them came to a strange world, full of diversity and differences their religion had taught them to hate and fear. Philip looked at it as a horror that needed to be eradicated. On the other hand Caleb, while he may have felt similarly at first, was clearly more willing to open his heart to what was different. We see he came to love the boiling isles, enough that he settled down and found a lover there. And Philip killed him for it. And then spent centuries cloning and torturing his brother to punish him because he couldn’t accept his choice.

So in the end we see that no matter how bigoted and awful the environment you come from is, you can still choose to change. its your choices that define you. Caleb choose to accept change. Philip choose genocide. Both were a product of their time, but only one decided to let that define them.
