#wonky house saga

Hi just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to thoughtfully respond to these anon messages. I work in dc w a fairly wonky set and i cant overstate how haunted the DC Professional Thought Havers are by the spectre of the "low propensity voter." I think these ppl (myself included LOL) thought we had everything figured out ahead of the 2016 elections and then never recovered from the way it ended up going......i feel like in all the years that followed.....the liberal bubbles.....the coastal elites.......the hillbilly elegies......the real america....the ohio diners....the pennsylvania diners.......the polls......the 2020 horserace....while part of an earnest attempt to understand What Happened, were primarily self-indulgent, self-flagellation for being "out of touch" bc of a self-diagnosed "elite" status that then turned into ANOTHER myopic view of the world, just opposite, where the "libs" are hapless and everyone else remotely to the left are primarily victims to the unstoppable supernatural forces of the Right. Then in 2020 the narrative flipped AGAIN and once again, instead of taking the opportunity to expand a worldview and having the bravery to confront their own shortcomings, the opinion havers and wonks and beltway pressers have decided to groupthink their way into writing off democracy altogether. Its BEYOND frustrating to see! Like damn volunteer at a soup kitchen or smthn instead of being obsessed w the fact that i vote lol
Yes, and there are several reasons for that. First, despite all the factors that contributed to Trump's shock win in 2016 (anti-Clintonism, white backlash to Obama, general low voter enthusiasm, Russian disinformation, etc) we should never forget that until James Comey decided to announce 10 days before the election that he was reopening the EEEEEEEMAILS case, even though we all knew there was nothing there, she was leading fairly comfortably in the polls. And while we will never know how the 2016 election would have gone without that, which imho was one of the most unforgivable acts of blatant sabotage by a public official in American history, it's also true that we saw her poll averages start sliding almost in real time, as people who hadn't really been keen on voting for her anyway decided firmly not to and Trump was able to scrape out 16,000 votes across PA, MI, and WI to take the Electoral College. Which... we all remember how we felt that night, right? (Or in my case, early morning, since I was overseas?) We don't, we really, really don't want to feel that way again. Just saying.
As such, the media (which had already beat up Clinton nonstop during the BUT HER EEEEEMAILS saga) drastically overcorrected and as you say, began writing endless angsty handwringing pieces about Trump Voters in Rural Ohio Diners and giving endless sympathetic airtime to how "economically left behind" they felt, regardless of the fact that open racism, especially Obama backlash, was and remains the principal animating feature of Republican politics (since their only economic platform is that which makes very rich people even richer and Democratic economic policies are the only ones actually targeted at helping ordinary people). The hangover was so strong that even when Democrats had a massive 2018 midterm result and flipped the House blue for the first time since the post-ACA backlash lost it in 2010, the Conventional Wisdom was now beyond any doubt that Democrats were doomed for a generation or something, and not that Trump had squeaked out a fluky win (while losing the popular vote) due to endless Russian/Comey/third party-etc interference and wasn't actually that powerful. Even in 2020 when Biden was leading fairly steadily and things were going to hell with Covid, etc. etc. TRUMP IS UNSTOPPABLE, TRUMP IS GOING TO WIN.
(And now. Like. I know Trump thinks Trump won in 2020, as do a large majority of his cultists, but that doesn't mean he did.)
Even after that, when Roe went down in 2022, that made no difference to the RED WAVE COMING!!! narrative, and the amount of smug white male pundits insisting that abortion just wasn't very important and people weren't going to base their entire vote on it reached truly disgusting levels. We're now seeing the same thing with the constant "people won't vote for democracy and/or abortion rights" blast, when as you say, this narrative has just been completely made the fuck up by a lot of groupthinking DC media who are determined that this time, Trump really is going to win and then they get to be principled chroniclers in opposition or something. Not to mention, the basic principle of "democracy and abortion rights are good" do in fact win by thumping margins every time they're on the ballot, including in deep red states. But there is literally not a single piece of empirical evidence despite the massive amounts of it supporting the truth (i.e. that Democrats are doing historically well in competitive elections since 2018 and there's not really a major reason to think this will change in 2024) that will get the media to change the "Democrats in disarray and Biden Iz Doomed" horserace BS they so love. They don't like Biden because he's boring and competent and just does the job without being insane, because it's totally a great idea to treat American government like a reality show! (Recall the infamous comment by the CBS CEO who literally said that Trump was bad for America but great for CBS, because he pulled in high ratings and therefore lots of money and visibility for CBS. We live in the worst timeline.)
As such, the mainstream media has a vendetta against Biden, is determined that this time Trump is super definitely going to win and everyone will see how genius they are, and not-so-secretly wants Trump back because a) he's good for money and ratings, and b) because the media conglomerations are owned by oligarchs who have a vested interest in making sure that Democrats and their policies never get too popular. Notice how the once self-proclaimed centrist independent Elon Musk has turned into a rabidly alt-right fanboy ever since the Democrats really got serious about taxing billionaires as a key part of their platform. Likewise, insisting that Biden Iz Doomed makes Democrats nervous (and thus more likely to tune in) and Republicans gleeful (and thus more likely to tune in), so there's literally no incentive for the media to even try to report things accurately. You could create a very different narrative of the 2024 election if you just remotely bothered to write about things that have actually happened as they have actually taken place, rather than bending over backward to insist that Biden being four years older than Trump is a worse crime than 91 felony indictments, 2 impeachments, 1 insurrection, 450 million dollars and counting in punitive jury verdicts, more major criminal trials coming down the pipe, and just demonstrably being the worst human being alive in so many ways. I mean. Wow.
The good news, as I said in my other post, is that when people actually vote, these utter bullshit narratives get routinely blown out of the water, and that's a good thing. Because it turns out that unlike Super Smart Beltway Pundits' Super Smart Predictions, the average American does actually like democracy and freedom for women to make their own personal healthcare decisions, and they vote accordingly. So while yes, it's being made harrowingly much harder than it needs to be because of how much the media simply refuses to report that basic fact, and there is no amount of evidence that will convince them otherwise, at least we're trending in the right direction and, if we all pull our weight, can do it one more time. I realized the other day that I hadn't heard a fucking peep about Ron DeSantis in the last two months, and oh, how glorious it was. I yearn beyond words for the day (God willing, soon) when the same is true of Trump as well.

You know, if there was one manga that would be adapted to live action and succeed, I never would have guessed it to be this one.
I'm ofc talking about the One Piece Live Action on Netflix
Tumblr media
A whole day binge right after release, I was READY, and thankfully, I was not disappointed. There are cuts and streamlining of the story, characters coming in earlier than in the manga/anime, and some of the emotional bits don't hit as hard as in the original. Still, I can feel the love the production team has of One Piece. The characters are goofy and lovable, but they are also serious and straight-faced.
One thing that I noticed throughout was the constant close up to faces and sometimes straight on, as if almost breaking the 4th wall. The very first scene with Luffy is like this, but there he DOES look into the camera directly, but the pov of the camera is revealed to be a newsbird. It's like a statement that they know this is a silly pirate romp, they know that some people will not take this seriously, but they will not do 4th wall breaks silly, but in-universe silly. Does that make sense?
I laughed at several points in the show, big and wide smile on my face and pointing at the screen several times...
Tumblr media
But I do wonder how much of my laugh was on the show's on merit or if I was only calling back on the the source material. At times I did feel the straw hat crew not being as iconic as in the manga/anime. The extreme reactions, the over the top noises and actions, at the same time I realize that real people generally don't act like that.
I appreciate the show runners attention to details. Putting stuff in to tease future arcs, adapting some cover stories, some of the complete unhinged behaviors of characters (Garp I'm looking at you!).
This show adapted Romance Dawn, orange town, syrup village, baratie, and arlong park.
There are so many moments that are almost scene by scene taken from the manga. Luffy in the barrel and meeting Koby. Alvida with her giant spike club. We got to see some pre-captured Zoro moments (particularly him killing a baroque works agent!), Nami being a sneak.
Then we meet the one and only clown Buggy! They hammed him up, they made him a showman and a real clown (with a real bulgy nose as well, props!). I loved Buggy. Goddamn what a show stealer. Excellent casting, his devil fruit was show cased so well and it looked good!
Tumblr media
Usopp's introduction is the most changed. The kids are gone and the Black Cat pirates never call in the entire crew or Jango. Instead of the fight on the slope by the beach it's instead in Kaya's house from which they cannot escape. The actor for Kuro nailing the mannerism and hand movements, altho his "teleporting" looks a bit wonky.
With Baratie we are finally introduced to Sanji! Who's British now 😆. And Mihawk's introduction tho! Badass and just so over the top and goofy. I love him so much! This is where we got the biggest change where we instead get Arlong and crew coming in smashing the place up (a tiny bit). Arlong may not be as tall as he should be but I love the practical approach instead of CGI, which means he actually feels present! All the fishmen we see are guys in costume and prosthetics!
Arlong Park felt a bit more rushed than the earlier parts, but I do think they nailed *that* scene tho.
If the bar for live action adaptation was below the ground, I would say now there's a new bar, which is on the ground 😅. I think it's a solid show but it might be my bias talking. I do have some gripes tho.
One thing that was constant in East Blue Saga was how much village people hate or are scared of pirates. I think they got the marines right, and the pirates, but they failed to really have the village people be a character in their own right. In the manga and anime the villagers are mostly a monolith who will think and act alike in situations and be part of the happenings either by watching or fighting. We got just about none of it here, except a mention in Arlong Park. They did some really good and cool world building with lots of people populating the sets in the background - but that's it, they're just extras to fill out the screen. There are ofc a few exceptions but I felt it was not enough.
I wish they had Luffy be more agile when using his gum-gum powers. Whenever he springs a pistol or a whip is stands in place, which I found boring (and they did so well with Zoro's fights!). I do think the explanation is that they decided for Luffy to be coming into his powers as we go. That we will learn with him all the things he can do (him not knowing he can blow himself up like a balloon proves this). I hope that in season 2 (please netflix!) they show the growth in his fighting!
But to end this long post. I just wanna say how much I fucking love the dude playing Mihawk. Goddamn he's so fun. MVP.
Tumblr media
For the straw hats, I would say that Usopp feels the closest to manga version, and Luffy feels the most distant from it. But I don't dislike this, and I think the actor for Luffy has so much potential to really make the role his own.
It will never be "just like" the manga and anime, but that's ok! It's a new adaptation (in live action) made by people you can tell loves the source material and really really tried to make it work! I respect that, and I respect this show. Please watch it on Netflix! It's a fun and silly time, just like it should be!

I absolutely love your Rimworld saga, I've always wanted to do something like it for one of my colonies but I'm a better writer than I am an artist. Any tips for someone not used to drawing people?
Thank you for the great stories and adorable artwork 💕
Ah, thank you so much!! I'm glad you like the Rimworld stuff, I really love making it, and I'm happy it seems to have found an audience that enjoys it.
As for art tips, here are three things I always try to remember when I'm drawing:
1. It's okay to use references!
I see a lot of people worried about art theft, tracing, and stealing, which are important issues to keep in mind. No artist wants their work stolen, and nobody wants to be accused of tracing or things like that. Certainly valid concerns for all parties.
However, I've noticed that a lot of people avoid using references because of those concerns. It's alright to use references for your artwork! You can and should look for references to practice with. It's not easy to make up every single pose from nothing, but I've seen a lot of artists give up because they can't figure poses out without looking up references, and they feel like that means they're not real artists.
I'm partial to stock photos personally. There are stock photos for every conceivable situation. Behold, one I used just yesterday:
Tumblr media
References are good and definitely okay to use. Use them a lot! They're a wonderful way to practice, and it's much easier to make up your own poses and draw people once you're used to drawing the human form from your references.
2. Don't be afraid to be silly!
Not every piece of art needs to be a serious and carefully thought-out commentary on the nature of humanity or society or things like that. Not every piece of art needs to be beautiful, or perfect, or even comprehendible. When I first started drawing art for a Rimworld colony, I was sitting beside my little brother and watching him play. I was doodling pictures of his colonists, and do you know what I ended up with? Nothing deep and meaningful, that's for sure.
I ended up with memes. Memes that are still blu-tacked up where everybody who comes into my house can see them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love them. I had so much fun drawing them. That's the important bit! They're ridiculous, silly, stupid memes, and I love them so much because I loved drawing them. Have fun with your art. Don't make it a chore. Be silly. Let yourself enjoy the act of creating, even if you end up with something dumb. That's the best kind of art.
3. Do so much art! So much of it!
The old saying says practice makes perfect, and it's not entirely wrong. I don't think I have ever met someone who has ever created something and decided it was perfect, no matter how much they practised.
However, the more you practice, the better you will be. I would post pictures of my older art to demonstrate the improvement, but I still haven't quite managed to choke back the gag reflex that comes with seeing the old drawings I have tucked away.
Maybe one day, when I'm braver, I'll show you the wonky caricatures of people I used to draw, and you can see for yourself that the more you make, the better you'll get. For now, though, I shall leave you with a tiny sampling of my sketchbook collection and one (1) spooky boi:
Tumblr media
I don't know if any of that was helpful. I'm not much of a teacher, I'm afraid, but I do wish you the best with your artistic endeavours! For what it's worth, I'd read a written story about a Rimworld game just as eagerly as I would absorb pictures of it.
Thank you for your lovely compliments, and I wish you the loveliest of days! 💕

Loved the first issue as well!!! And like u I'm also confident this won't be just a run to make Stephen and Clea break up again 😅 love her outfits so much, specially the long skirt that here is so flowy and seems made of pure darkness rather than fabric 🙏🏻💕 though I feel this artist is better at larger shots and not much at closeups, I often don't like how he draws faces which is a shame bc the style as a whole is very interesting and unique... hope for improvement
Amen, Vishanti! I also noticed that about her outfit and it just fits her perfectly because, well, although the Dark Dimension is colorful, it’s still called the Dark Dimension hehehe and she was raised by Dormammu and Umar so... Also it reminds me of Wanda’s and Ororo’s hair, mixing up with their powers. Loved it so so so much! And I agree with you, the faces are kinda wonky sometimes but the colors are quite charming. I'll get used to them and hope for improvement as well!

With every new issue I'm more and more grateful that Cates introduced Bats to Stephen's life. Having him step in almost as master of the house in Wong's absence was a lovely touch
Same fr! Bats is just so important to me because I too went through a similar experience with my late dog, and his presence warms my heart. It’s a homage to say that doggos are always with us, no matter what. And Bats’s presence, as you pointed out, is important for Stephen to deal with his loneliness, at least when Wong and Clea aren’t around. I’ll Always be thankful to Donny Cates for creating our little ghost dog.

I need to bitch about the saga of my HVAC system today. Buckle up, this is a ride.
My house was built in 1987, and I bought it in 2009.  It had central air for heating, but had a swamp cooler for cooling.  In 2011 the water tray on the swamp cooler rusted through and dumped a bunch of water in my attic.  We decide to go ahead and have the swamp cooler replaced with an attic fan and to get an actual air conditioning unit.
For the a/c we go through a small company suggested by a coworker.  The unit is installed in June.  By the end of July, it’s not blowing cold air anymore.  The installer comes out to check it and says the coolant is low.  He fills it up and leaves.  By the end of August, it’s not blowing cold air anymore.  I have to nag the installer to come out and fix it.  Once again he tops off the coolant.  No explanation about why it’s low, and he does it while we’re not home so I can’t talk to him about it.  We’re right at the tail end of summer, and climate change hasn’t come out swinging with a bat in this area yet.  So next summer comes around and it seems to be fine at first.  It lasts 2 weeks.  And now the installer is refusing to come look at it.  It’s still under both the manufacturer and work warranties.  He puts me off until both are expired.
I call another company, recommended by a coworker that owns a couple rental houses.  This guy comes out, discovers the unit was defective and had a leak.  He bends over backwards to get the manufacturer to buy the unit back, and put the credit towards another one.  It’s a name brand I’ve heard of, and it has a 10 year warranty.  He gets it installed, everything is wonderful.
We decide in 2015 to call an electrician to fix an issue with anything stronger than a nightlight in the upstairs bedrooms flipping the breaker.  Apparently the fuse box is A MESS.  There are LIVE WIRES in there just FLOATING AROUND FREE, risking EXPLOSIONS if they get jostled and hit the sides.  The reason this is important to the HVAC story is that we discover at this point that the previous owner of the house probably finished the basement himself, and there’s a bunch of wonky shit that we’re going to have to deal with in the future.  For now tho, we can use the plugs upstairs, yay.
The furnace stops working in February 2016.  Awesome HVAC guy comes out and repairs it for free. I’m not sure why he doesn’t charge us, but he’s awesome that way.  He does warn that it’s getting near the end of its lifespan, and we may need to replace it soon.  He also mentions that it’s not actually big enough for our house’s square footage, and it’s probably running too hard and wasting electricity and wearing itself out faster.  Good to know, thanks Awesome HVAC guy.
In January 2017, the furnace starts screaming.  There’s something scraping in the fan motor.  Awesome HVAC guy just had knee replacement surgery and can’t come fix it, but he refers me to another contractor who fixes the fan.  He also says the furnace is on its last legs, but for now it’s working.  My husband and I decide to let it limp through the rest of this winter, and replace it later in the year.  Which we end up doing in January 2018 because it starts screaming again.  Awesome HVAC guy comes out to replace it, gives us a good deal, gets a bigger unit that is more efficient for our house size.  Oh look! Our winter electricity bill is much better thank you!
Everything is going JUST FINE.
In June of this year we have a bigger HVAC+Electric+Water Heater company come out and inspect our HVAC system.  It’s a free service we get for having them replace our water heater recently, so I figure we’ll have them look at it, and if anything needs to be done, I’ll call the Awesome HVAC guy to do the work, cuz he’s bound to be less expensive.  We discover that the furnace just needs dust blown out, and the A/C unit has a cap that’s loose that might be causing a coolant leak, although it’s very slow and probably not a big deal right now but is worth having fixed before it dies completely.
I say thanks, we’ll get back to you.  I call Awesome HVAC guy, but his numbers are disconnected.  Both his business number, and his personal number, which he gave me because for some reason he treats me like a daughter about all this repair business.  I hope he’s retired, and that Covid didn’t get him :(
So I decide to go ahead with getting the maintenance done with the company that did the inspection.  I schedule it for the end of August when I have some times off.  He’d also suggested an ionizer, which I’ve wanted for a few years and I’m like what the hell, let’s do it.  He does the ionizer install, cleans out the furnace, repairs the a/c.  Everything’s hunky dory.
Day before yesterday the a/c breaks.  It won’t turn OFF.  But it’s not triggering the blower in the furnace unit, so the a/c is pumping its little heart out, but it’s just freezing up the pipe.  The only way to turn it off is to go outside and flip the breaker.
So I call the big company again.  Because it’s the off season, they’re able to send someone right away, which is nice.  Dude comes out, does a few tests, checks what he hopes is the easy fix but that’s not broken.  Pokes around a little more.  Finds out that the problem isn’t something that can be fixed, and the whole unit has to be replaced.  It’s just out of warranty, of course.
It’s going to be almost $8000 to replace, but he’s going to apply a discount for all the maintenance we had done last month to bring the price down, which is nice of him.  But we find out also that starting in 2023, a regulation is going into place where if you replace an a/c or a furnace, you’ll be required to replace both at the same time, plus do some efficiency upgrades.  He’s not trying to upsell me for a furnace, he’s just warning me that with the warranties and life span expectancy of the units being different, if I have to replace my furnace in 5 years, I’ll be required to replace the a/c at the same time.
Siiiiiigh.
Again, he’s not upselling me, he’s just educating me about warranty stuff. So I ask him how much it would be to replace both and do the efficiency upgrades now.  It’s $16,000, but he finagles some discounts out of his boss and gets it down to $13,000.  I have the cashmoney for it, so I grit my teeth and say do it all right now, even though my furnace is fine.  I’d rather pay $13k right now with the discounts, than pay $7000 right now and in 5 years have to pay another AT LEAST $13k (because inflation and potential new regulations means it'll probably be more expensive then) to replace them both.  In the long run it'll save me money to do both now and I can afford it.
Amazingly, they can do it all that day.  It's off season! And they stockpiled some units, so unlike some other companies they're not all out at the end of busy season.  They come out, spend 6 hours replacing everything.  Nice guys, great work, everything looks and runs great.  They remind us to regularly replace our air filters, and get our yearly inspections, etc, then they take off after a job well done.
Today my husband is like "y'know, I should replace the air filter right now since it's about the time of year when we do it anyway".
And this is when he discovers that the guy who installed the ionizer in August put it in the way of the door to the air filter.  We can't open it.  FUCK.
Guess who I'm calling again right after posting this?

Beware the Demon Bear! (New Mutants Review)
Hello, welcome to the House of Milesverse
This year, we saw the release of the satire (but actually based on a REAL story) film Cocaine Bear. Naturally, it led to a variety of memes and jokes about the titular character. Funnily enough, this year I also got to read a book about another evil bear.
Tumblr media
That's right, folks!
Today? We will be talking about the Demon Bear Saga!
Who are the New Mutants?
Tumblr media
The New Mutants was a graphic novel released in September 1982, created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod. Eventually in 1983, the New Mutants would gain their own book. The group focused on a young team of mutant students assembled by Charles Xavier.
The original roster was composed of Mirage (Dani Moonster), Karma (Manh Cao Xuan), Wolfsbane (Rahne Sinclair), Cannonball (Sam Guthrie), and Sunspot (Roberto Da Costa). Other members would join the team as well. This includes Cypher (Douglas Ramsey), the extraterrestrial Warlock, and Magik (Illyana Rasputin), who was the younger sister of Colossus.
The New Mutants' started out as a lighthearted story for X-Men fans. The inclusion of the Demon Bear saga kickstarts a serious adventure for the team. Luckily, our grizzly friend provides us with an interesting narrative.
The Bear Necessities for a Story
Tumblr media
One character central to Demon Bear's mythology is Danielle Moonstar. She is a young Cheyenne girl with psychic powers. In particular, Dani has the ability to create strong illusions.
Dani believes that the Demon Bear is responsible for her parent's deaths. The large ursine creature wants to kill Dani. He spends a good deal of the saga trying to get to her.
In fact, Dani tries to face the demon bear herself but is wounded. She is sent to the hospital, accompanied by her friends. The other members of the New Mutants try their best to deal with the Demon Bear.
Unfortunately, this is not enough, and it drags them to another dimension. In an unfamiliar environment, the bear temporarily gets the upper hand. In the end, Magik uses her soulsword to defeat the demon bear, reverting it to its original form.
The demon bear's 'original' form was actually Dani's parents. Something had twisted the two into this monster. Dani eventually wakes up and is able to reunite with her parents.
Danielle Moonstar: Our Main Protagonist
Tumblr media
There is a lot to say about Danielle Moonstar as a character. Throughout the story, she is distressed about the Demon Bear's arrival. The beast stalks her nightmares, and she is clearly afraid of them.
In spite of that? Dani does her best to try and stop it. She faces off against the Demon Bear alone. Even though she loses, she still tries to kill it.
That quality, facing your fear even if it means certain death, makes her a worthy X-Man.
The Demon Bear is a WORTHY enemy.
Tumblr media
I think the Demon Bear on its own presents a pretty scary threat. Can you imagine being in Magik's position? She's being hunted by this bear that wants to maim her. Heck, it goes through the troubles of infiltrating a hospital just to finish the job.
Tumblr media
I think the Demon Bear's best feature however is its design. The bear feels so familiar and yet so different. The wonky art style really sells the Demon Bear and how otherworldly it is.
Right here, you see the Demon Bear's abilities. The creature has the ability to corrupt the minds, souls, and bodies of its victims. A police officer and a nurse are unfortunately cursed to become his minions.
It's even weirder afterward because the Demon Bear's defeat does not undo it. Both the sheriff and the nurse are permanently transformed into Native Americans.
As I mentioned before, it has the power to transport others into another dimension. It sent the New Mutants to the Badlands where it could do battle. That was also where it utilized it's minions.
Let's face it, Magik's kind of badass.
Tumblr media
As I said, Magik is the younger sister of Piotr Rasputin, aka Colossus. She's a member of the New Mutants, one of the primary magic aids of the X-Men, and the occasional Queen of Limbo. Magik strikes fear in the hearts of her enemies with her vicious soulsword, a manifestation of her mystical powers.
Ultimately, Magik comes in handy against the similarly-mystical Demon Bear. She manages to undo the Demon Bear's twisted transformation, stopping the creature's rampage. It's awesome to see how Magik's able to help the team in the story.
Tumblr media
Fun fact, but did you know that in an alternate universe, she would succeed Doctor Strange as Sorcerer Supreme? She even gets the cloak. Even now, she works as a teacher for the Strange Academy.
Conclusion: The New Mutants kind of rule?
The Demon Bear Saga actually made an X-fan of me. Of course, long before I read this, I at least liked some of the members. However, now I just want to sink my teeth into other well-written X-Men stories.
Honestly, I love the vibe of stories that mix superheroes and horror. It combines two of my favorite genres. In fact, this saga has the perfect blend between the two. While it may read as a horror movie in certain parts, it still presents the dynamic superhero action we've come to enjoy.
Overall, I hope you enjoyed House of Milesverse! I'll be back again with another X-Ceptional, Astonishing, and Uncanny discussion!

thursday morning,3 a.m.
good morning! it’s october 27th and after hours of sweating i realized it was not just my wonky night sweats, but the dewpoint and humidity are high and there’s not enough circulation in our apartment, nor any breeze out the window,so i just put on the ac. both my sister and i have bad temp regulation and don’t sleep well, but need a blanket covering to sleep at all,so it’s just funtime.
hello simon and garfunkel. and our trees have been gorgeous here lately.
Tumblr media
much brighter than these right now but a lot of maple trees and one oak outside my window is a beautiful burgundy and the leaves will probably stay on all winter. the trees scare me though when the wind kicks up. quite a few years back on a thanksgiving eve,i heard a crash and the sound of breaking glass as a tree came through a window. this was after mom died and youngest sis wasn’t living with me yet,and it was in the spare bedroom that sunny my sisters cat who lived with me then liked to hang out in. luckily that night she was on the couch in the living room. it was about ten o’clock at night. i was shook. i called one of my sisters whose house i was supposed to go to for thanksgiving (back when i could actually have a holiday with family) and my brother in law answered and he calmed me down a bit and i told him i wasn’t going to make it tomorrow but i was too stressed now to sleep.
fortunately,i called the person who manages our condos and he came over and put plastic on the window. the window didn’t get replaced until about six weeks later,in january,so i had to keep the door closed and hope it didn’t get too cold in there. even a few years earlier than that, probably around 2010 or so,most of our trees next door were cut down to make room for a storage complex next to the oil company next door. so the few trees that remain are very unstable and i have asked the realty company to check them out and maybe take them down but nothing has been done.
anyway, that’s my dull saga for now. let me see if i can find a cute gif to finish this off.

The combination of how the cullens behave towards people and how little they care (as per therealvinelles metas) and fuckmeyers metas and how often they are incredibly immoral and strange, what is their motive for vegitarianism? Like, their reasons for why they do it are clear sometimes but what is their internal justification for it? What do they think their motives are?
This is an interesting question!! I think for some of the cullens it's clearer and more consistent than others:
Carlisle: was prepared to die rather than violate the "sanctity of life" right from the moment he was turned. Now, what he considers life is definitely influenced by his (and meyer's) christianity*. He had no qualms with eating animals as a human or as a vampire. He also cares about the shifters up to a point. Based on book canon, he would never kill one of the pack members and he does value the treaty more than the others Cullens (especially Edward) but I think he also sees himself as somewhat superior to them. He ran tests on Jake's blood without consent, valuing his own curiosity over Jacob's right to his own body. But that's a whole other meta lol. Anyway, I think Carlisle, like many christians*, values "human" (he's added vampires and shifters to this) life period over quality of life. He didn't let Rose die because it would have been a "waste" but he didn't consider what a curse immortality would be for her. Alive in any condition is better than dead for Carlisle and I believe that is his core motivation for continuing the diet (and for turning the 4 vampires that he did).
Jasper: I put him second because I agree with @therealvinelle that Jasper might have figured out the vegetarian diet on his own eventually even if he'd never met alice. Jaspers gift made it painful for him to feed and in Eclipse he tells Bella that he went so far as to starve himself for periods of time just to avoid the emotional pain of feeding. His self control still isn't perfect but he is the only Cullen who personally needs the diet, not for moral reasons like Carlisle, but because feeding from humans is almost traumatizing for him.
Esme: her only motivation for the diet is carlisle. Honestly during my reread Esme comes across as nice, not kind, and very nearly agoraphobic. She avoids most humans except for Bella and only works in isolation (renovating a house by herself during NM). She isn't doing the diet because she likes being around people and needs to control her urges and blend, she isn't doing the diet out of compassion (she told Edward he could eat Bella in MS if that's what he needed to do), and she has no physical or emotional need like Jasper to refrain from eating humans. She only does it because Carlisle, the man she had romanticized and adored since she was 16, "saved" her and taught her this diet. She does it for him.
Rosalie: Rosalie is also in a unique position within the Cullen clan because for her the diet is not about morals or need but control. And with her "origin story" so to speak, it makes perfect sense. The last moments of her life were senseless violence. For her, whether she would admit it or not, the diet is entirely about exerting control over her current undead life. Regaining the agency that was taken from her in her last moments of life and in the first moments of her life as a vampire. You can see it in the way she speaks of her record as well- she doesn't care that she isn't killing humans or drinking them, she cares because she has self control. She is empowered by her spotless feeding record and she feels justified in the deaths she did cause (even brushing off the two guards she killed to get to Royce).
Edward: Edward only does the diet for his own internal theater. He's wrapped up in his own unfolding drama- when he turns away from Carlisle he turns himself into a vigilante, scouring the night for sexual predators, drug abusers, pedophiles, and deviants. It's very Film Noir for him. He tells Bella that he couldn't bear to kill "good" humans which was why he went after "villains" when he did break from the diet but as we learn in MS when he fantasizes about killing literally the entire Quileute tribe, Edward doesn't care about killing "good" humans either. Edward would kill anyone as long as the reason was justified by his own theater. He'd kill Mike Newton out of "love," he'd kill deviants on the street to "prove" himself, he'd even try to kill to whole Volturi just to martyr himself and "prove" that they really were evil after all. Edward only does the vegetarian diet while it fits with his self image. With Bella, he sees himself as saintly, "like carlisle," punishing himself with thirst so that he deserves the Bella Madonna he invented in his own head. And of course, a lot of his self image and image of world is warped into a wonky Carlisle shape because he's fully obsessed with his creator. He does the diet in part for carlisle (which we see in NM when Alice "sees" edward killing hundreds of tourists in volterra and then changing his mind so that he doesn't disappoint carlisle) and in part because of his own mental theater.
Emmett, Alice, & Bella: all three do the diet because "that's what cullens do." They aren't motivated by love of carlisle, like Esme, even if they may all respect carlisle (tbh I wouldn't believe that any of them feel love for anyone though that comes down to meyers ability to show genuine love in the first place. But again that's a whole other meta lolol). They don't really care about humans at all as all three have the "slip ups happen, lol" attitude about eating humans. Alice does the diet because she "saw" it, Emmett does the diet because Carlisle turned him, Bella does the diet because she's a Cullen. If edward wanted to leave and go on a binge-eating road trip through every city in america, Bella would tag along.
Renesmee: honestly I don't remember BD well and I'm not there yet in my reread but I vaguely remember Renesmee being capable of biting humans (and Jacob) without killing them. If this is the case, I don't think Renesmee will be following the diet for very long at all because why bother reigning herself in if she can sip on a human with no real consequence of murder?
Of course, I assume Renesmee will still be "vegetarian" in meyers threatened sequel because the out of universe reason the cullens have to be vegetarians is simply, they need to be superior. They need to stand out from those other nasty vampires who are only vegetarians for sex or worse, aren't vegetarians at all! The theme of valuing existence over quality of life is really consistent throughout the saga, from Carlisle's choice to turn the cullens that he did to Bella's decision to keep Renesmee. Its a very pro-life series through and through.
* I didn't want to get too wordy there but I mean the US's specific brands of christianity like evangelicalism and mormonism. In the US, christians value "sanctity of life" over quality of life in every way. (Ergo why it's easier to pass abortion bans than universal healthcare here.) I don't think meyer really paid much attention to historical accuracy when she wrote Carlisle (if she thought london had sewers in the 17th century, I doubt she would know the nuanced differences between modern and early protestantism) so I think his own religious beliefs are more reflective of modern US christianity than 17th century britain's christianity. *

Harvest Surprise
Tumblr media
Pairing: Hal Carter x Reader
Summary: Setting up a nice seasonal surprise for Hal on the front porch of your country home.
Words: 718
Warnings: None! Maybe spiders (fake spiders). But otherwise, just cute domestic softness and fluff and kissing.
A/N: I needed some fluff and softness today! So I decided to write some🥰 This was written for @the-ss-horniest-book-club using a prompt about surprising Hal by decorating his porch with pumpkins and fake spiders. Thank you for reading some fluff with me, enjoy! ❤
* * * *
You woke with the morning sun, soft and gentle on your face. Stretching your arms above your head, you giggled as the blanket covered your face, but the stretch was just so good. Cuddling up in the blanket again, you turned on your side and saw that the spot next to you was empty. Hal had always been an “early to bed and early to rise” kind of guy, and he’d gotten up for work so quietly that he hadn’t even woken you. You smiled at the thought of him, he worked so hard, keeping the farm running, and taking care of you. He was a good man.
With Hal busy on the farm for harvest season, you busied yourself with tasks inside during the day. After a nice relaxed breakfast and cup of coffee, you did some chores around the house, prepared a few recipes, and then worked on a few fun projects of your own. Some old craft supplies caught your eye, and you paused, smiling to yourself as you thought of a way to use them.
The rest of the day was spent crafting, and then heading out to the garden to pick some pumpkins. Carting them back to the house in a wheelbarrow, you began putting your plan into action. A little while later you stepped back to take a look at your efforts. Hal’s porch was now decorated for fall, complete with pumpkins up the steps and around the door, potted flowers, and fake crafted spiders sprinkled about. A few of the spiders were larger than the others, those you’d tied around the deck posts, and hung above the door and the front window. The spiders made you smile, they weren’t scary, some were a bit wonky, and that just added to the charm. In your opinion they were almost cute.
As you stood back to admire your work, you started to wonder if maybe a few hay bales would finish it off nicely, when strong arms quickly circled around your waist. Yelping in surprise, you jumped and immediately started giggling as Hal buried his face in the crook of your neck.
“Hal, oh my goodness! You scared me!” He chuckled in between kisses that he planted on your skin, then looked up to observe your efforts.
“Looks like you’ve been busy today!”
“Do you like it?” You asked quietly, turning around in Hal’s arms to face him. He had a grin on his face as he looked between you and the house.
“It looks amazing honey. This is probably the best and most festive this porch has ever looked. Pumpkins from the garden?”
“Yes! Don’t they look fantastic?”
“Best pumpkins I ever saw.” You reached up to brush your lips against his, his excitement and praise warming you from within. A gentle kiss, and then you took his hand in yours, tugging him closer to the house to show him the details. He beamed at the spiders, chuckling at the handmade aspect of them, especially loving the one that you’d hung on the post.
“You’ve done an amazing job sweetheart. What a great surprise. I can’t believe you made these!”
“I did! It was a lot of fun.” Hal’s arm circled your waist again and he pulled you close, Placing your hands on his chest, you leaned in to kiss him, melting into him when he cupped your jaw in his hands. He smelled musky, like sweat and dirt and hard work, and you loved him for it. His hands might be calloused, but his lips were soft, and his embrace never failed to make you feel warm and safe.
When the kiss broke, you pecked another small one on his jaw, then leaned your head against his chest. He wrapped his arms around you and held you tight, starting to sway ever so slightly back and forth. You let your eyes drift closed, enjoying the calm of the evening and being wrapped in Hal’s arms.
“I’m so glad you like it honey.” Hal smiled and kissed the top of your head.
“It’s perfect, just like you. I love you, Mrs. Carter.” Looking up to meet his eyes, you smiled and raised your hand to his cheek, stroking it before pulling him in for another kiss.
“I love you too, Mr. Carter.”

Smokey brand Reviews: Academy Life
I am aware of The Umbrella Academy through social osmosis. It never really piqued my interest enough to get me into the narrative, but i respected what it was doing. I’m a sucker for that misfit, out-of-place, X-Men-esque, narrative. A more apt description of this particular group would probably be Doom Patrol, but the sentiment is the same. I understood it to be excellent specifically because it came out of Dark Horse. Those cats are the A24 of the comics industry and i respect the f*ck out of them. Dark Horse was the first publisher, stateside, that gave manga a chance. The first Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell adaptions i owned came out of that publishing house. They gave us some of the best Alien and Predator stories to every make the fandom, on top of unique characters like The Mask, Empowered, Hellboy, and Usagi Yojimbo.
The pedigree of the company in which The Umbrella Academy stands is unassailable, especially with that deliciously sublime design of The White Violin, i just didn’t get into it during it’s original run. Or when the first season the show was announced. Now, that the second is set to drop in a few days, i figure this would be the best time to check it out. I’m curious if the hype is legitimate or if it’ll fall short because, holy sh*t, that climax to the first arc was spectacular.
The Good
I have to say, this cast feels like a family. They’re so broken and awkward and haphazard but you can sense that underlying love. It feels organic and real. That type of energy is very hard to capture but, surprisingly, this show does so with rather effortless aplomb.
The narrative of this series is actually pretty spectacular. I was thoroughly surprised by how everything unfolded, particularly the more eccentric elements. There are things that had to be changed for the sake of the media but
Look, i just have to say, i love the music in this thing. The choices are exceptional, easily the best I've seen in any Netflix production. I mean, who the f*ck sets a brutal ass fight scene, in a rundown diner, between secret government commandos and a time hopping, 53-year-old teenager, to Istanbul by They Might Be Giants? What mad man hears that song, for that scene? I appreciate the deep cuts.
This show is f*cking gorgeous. Netflix really but their best foot forward for this one. The Umbrella Academy can give the Marvel Netflix collabs a run for their money. It’s not Daredevil, but it’s close. I mean, some of the CG can be a little wonky, (Pogo, I'm looking at you) but that can be excused by how much detail is captured in every other aspect n this production. I mean, Vanya's White Violin transformation is f*cking spectacular.
I’m a little bit surprised by how great these performances are. The entire cast is spectacular. I can’t say they are comic accurate like the MCU, but from the standpoint as a show, absolutely excellent. I'd speak on each, individual, cast members and how great they are in their respective roles but I'd be here forever gushing. No, I'll reserve one entry for the standout and just heap a massive amount of general praise on everyone in this show. It's f*cking performed to perfection. Especially Number Five.
Ellen Page deserved all of the awards for her performance as Vanya. Holy sh*t, this is some great acting, man. Somehow, Page is able to capture all of that frailty, all of that melancholy, perfectly. She's supposed to be emotionless in the book, and her emotions definitely come across as muted, but I think this is a far more realistic interpretation. That said, when she lets go? Holy Sh*t!
The Bad
The pacing in this thing can be a little hectic at times. I was surprised by how many times momentum was stalled for a flashback or a weird narrative choice. It was very jarring at times. Ultimately, I think this thing could have shaved an entire  episode worth of fat to make the viewing experience more palatable but it's not a huge detractor from the overall quality.
I spoke earlier about how dope the soundtrack is in this thing. All of these songs are great. Very recognizable, very powerful, perfectly paired with each scene. However, to fit those scenes, they have to be edited. Chopped up basically. That mess is VERY apparent, especially when you have to butcher Queen. I appreciate the music, don’t get me wrong, but, I mean, it’s Queen! You don't censor f*cking Queen!
The Verdict
I adore this show, man. I feel bad for sleeping on it for so long. I really should have jumped right in when it was originally released but a ten hour commitment seemed like way too much. Now that the world has stopped and i have all the time in the world, that ten hours breezed by at a ridiculous pace. I’m kind of glad to have waited, mostly because the gap between seasons is so short now. I’m hooked. The Umbrella academy is a rich, expansive, story told with respect and love. It’s chock full of great dialogue, realistic familial relations, and organic interactions, which is saying a lot when one of these kids can f*cking time travel. How do you ground that in reality so easily? I loved the narrative. I loved the characters. This is easily the best X-Men anything since Days of Futures Past. I'm kidding, but it's not too far off to say this is the best adaption of The Dark Phoenix saga ever put to film. In all seriousness, I loved the look, the feel, the palpable chemistry between the cast. The Umbrella Academy season one, is truly one of the best shows Netflix has ever produced.

Updates & Greetings
First of all, hello and welcome to all the lovely people who have followed me over the last few days! I just wanted to post a little something to help guide you around this little mess of mine with links especially for mobile users.
I’ve got a little Things to Know page that I encourage taking a look at if you’re new! There you’ll find a list of the main characters I write for as well as links to each of their introduction pages!
If you’d like to dive right into all my writing I also have a Masterlist which I try to update best I can. Today I did discover my links had gone wonky linking to the wrong things or not linking at all so I did my best to fix them. But please let me know if things aren’t working and I’ll try to figure it out!
My inbox is always open whether you’d like to drop by and request some content, leave me some content, or just say hi!
I recently created a Ko-Fi page because who couldn’t use a little currency these days. By no means is anyone obligated to donate but if you feel so compelled that’s there.
ALRIGHT NOW FOR THE UPDATES:
So I’ve currently got a few things in the kitchen. I’m working on a request that has to do with Kylo’s Empress speaking Sith and E taking lots of creative liberties with the SW universe. The Quarantine Saga is also still in the works. Up next will be some sleepy time with Paterson and Kylo keeping his Empress entertained while a plague sweeps the galaxy. And of course, as always, feel free to pressure me to do a specific letter of the NSFW alphabet for a certain character(s)!
This upcoming week I will be house/dog sitting for some friends so I should have plenty of time to crack down on these works, but I just wanted to let everyone know what’s coming up!

*******************************************************************************************
This decision scared you to death but what else could you do?
*******************************************************************************************
Everything was happening faster than your brain could process. It was all a mess and nothing made sense to you anymore. The Wakanda you knew was a struggling 3rd world country, people were people, and things were normal, up until yesterday. Your mind races to what your friends might have thought if they even knew you were missing. You couldn't help but feel like they would never find you again.
In the background, Shuri and T’Challa formally argued about the best solution to this problem and Shuri strongly stood by hers. In all honesty, if that was the only way to help ‘fix’ Erik, then why was T’Challa so worried?
Oh yeah, imprinting.
You mentally facepalmed and sat thinking of something else. Normally you would be panicking, but you HAD to get home and freaking out wasn’t going to help you. As much as you wanted to stay far away from Erik, you couldn’t help but want to stay with him. No one deserved to feel or go through what he was going through.
“So this is just... primal instincts?” You ask gaining their attention. They looked at you then back to one another.
You noticed something moving from the corner of your eye. When you turn, you see Erik pacing and suddenly punch the glass, cracking it. It caught you off guard and you flinch back, the superhuman strength terrifying you. Your memory flashed you back to the attack last night and you whimper.
Realizing your discomfort, Shuri’s lip goes to a thin line. She looks down to her bracelet and squeezes a bead. You hear a little sound and the glass smoothly fades to an etched glass. You could only see the image of Erik’s form pacing, it still made you a bit nervous but it sort of helped. You didn’t have to see his pain, or his eyes, or his freaking body. Out of sight out of mind, right? Watching him go through this pain was heartbreaking and gave you anxiety.
I need you...
“Yes, you could say that,” T’Challa’s voice pulled you from your thoughts. You almost forget what he was talking about. “We just don’t want his sidalwa to rip him apart protecting someone that doesn’t need protecting,” T’Challa looks over to to the glass then down to his feet, “but I also don’t want matters to be made worse in case things get... difficult.”
Damnit, he was right.
“Why don’t I just close my eyes,” You ask hopefully.
“No, the sidalwa won’t be affected by such a childish act,” Shuri shrugs as if she has already tried it, “the connection is through the eyes,” she motions two fingers towards her own, “unless it has already happened, you should be able to stop it before it starts. But just by watching your behavior, you’ve already noticed his.”
Indeed you have but you didn’t feel anything different, just sorrow. You were human and what he was going through could hurt the heart of any normal human being. On the other hand, how were you supposed to react? Those eyes were the whole reason you walked out of the club last night in the first place. Such a feature to follow was something that only happened in a Twilight Saga or other romantic stories, which you read a lot in your free time. You couldn’t help it, in your head you wanted your whole life to be a fantasy, but not literally. Stories and solutions to you would play out like a soap opera but now that it was really happening, you couldn’t help but be a tinch bit excited. But just a tinch.
Rejecting Erik Stevens would be risky, but if it worked, you would have saved a life and be able to continue with your own. It was tough but if you wanted this to be over, you had no damn choice.
“Y-you said... you were also at fault, your highness?” You begin, “If you don’t mind me asking,” You begin shyly trying to get more motivation to go through with Shuri’s plan. T’Challa’s strong presence was intimidating and you couldn’t help but cower in his light. He looked over to you raising a brow, allowing you to finish without saying a word. “What did you do?”
T’Challa stood there a moment as if recapping everything and figuring out how to formulate an understandable answer. He stood there with his hands behind his back and his lips in a thin line. He closed his eyes and let out a deep breath, coming to terms that there was no going around this.
“I pressured him,” He confessed, “I wanted him to settle down with one woman, have a child or children. He is a Prince after all and my cousin, and those actions weren’t acceptable our name. People were beginning to talk and I knew he was better than what others were making him out to be,” T’Challa says, standing by his statement. “If I had known this was going to happen, I would have just let up just a little bit. I didn’t mean for this to happen...”
“I understand,” You finish, you give him a reassuring smile semi-understanding what his dilemma was. You had a member of your family that you just wished would just chill out and realize what they were doing was also a reflection of your own family. Erik is a grown man and is responsible for his own actions, not T’Challa and not you. With that, you finally made your decision.
“I’ll do it,” You croak and clear your throat. This decision scared you to death but what else could you do? You didn’t need protecting, you were Y/Age and you got THIS far without it. T’Challa balls up his fist and inhales through his nose, “If this fails-”
“I’ll be stuck,” You cut off, “your highness!” you quickly correct and Shuri chuckles to herself.

She pats you on the back for reassurance and leads you over to where Erik was being kept, you could no longer see his figure. A screen pops up behind you, the sound causing you to turn around, you could see the other side with T’Challa watching it.
It showed an oversight view of him. Erik was in the corner of the room, knees up to his chin. He looked as if he was shivering but sweat continued to pour from his pores. Your heart began to sink, he looked as if he was begging for a solution as well. You watch as Erik’s head slowly rises, he must have noticed that you were coming over, even though you couldn’t hear or see anything, you knew he was also afraid and annoyed by the situation.
“Stand right here please,” Shuri's voice brings you back while positioning you and placing a small mic behind your ear. You did what you were told and couldn’t help but notice the claw marks and cracks on the glass. Fear slowly crept up your back and you gulp.
Shuri must have noticed because she nudges you, “Do not worry there are three more layers between you. Kind of like a zoo. You are safe,” She smiles and walks back behind you to her table. You closed your eyes and slowly tried to calm your nerves. You were still freaking out and wondering how they could all be so cool with this, as if this happens all of the time, even though clearly it didn’t but still.
Okay, okay... Don’t over think this. Stay calm.
“No one likes rejection, so please, do your best to stay calm,” You hear T’Challa behind you. You open your eyes to try an look at him, but you are now face-to-face with Erik Stevens.
