i feel it is somewhat self explanatory but especially in a CNC scene, you need a safe word that is not a typical word you’d hear. but ALL irl scenes especially (and online!) should have a safe word set up. if you’re doing any form of breath play, gagging, anything where the mouth will be covered or talking not possible, a nonverbal cue should also be in place.

the way a lot of people do it:

red - stop, do not continue at all. scene done.

yellow - unsure, uncomfortable, needs to slow down, needs a break. talk it out before continuing

green - when in a scene where something comes up that you may not have discussed beforehand (things slip your mind, it happens), if it is not a soft/hard limit for your partner - doing a quick “safe?” or something of the same tone to check in! if it’s not obviously red/yellow would be options, but if it is an easy “green” and continuing on makes you know both you and your partner are comfortable.

subs and doms both should have clear, understandable safe words/actions to stop a scene.

(please i’m gonna throw up if i see another “hehe my safe word is ‘!stop!’”)

Raising pups with non-releaseable surrogate otter moms in our care, like Ivy (pictured here), provides orphaned pups with the skills necessary for life back in the wild. But a successful reintroduction takes a lot more than that! A recent study looking back at 20 years of sea otter releases found that the most important factors for their success were favorable weather and ocean conditions, and low competition for resources.

The study’s results will inform future decisions about when and where to release southern sea otters to maximize their chances of survival. It also provides support for expanding our surrogacy program to other aquariums, increasing our impact on recovering wild otter populations. What an ottertunity!

saw a mink at the creek today!! he was playing in the water by a rocky ledge then hopped up onto the ledge and frolicked his way over to the roots of a several trees growing out of the bank. first time ive ever seen a live mink in the wild so that was really neat!

as with the otters a couple weeks ago, i unfortunately didn't have a camera or my phone with me to get any photos/video but im still so glad i got to see him just bouncing around and enjoying himself. <3

Almost every day I think about that first post I saw a few years ago where someone decided that people enjoying the cuteness of otters needed to be destroyed for the sake of ‘reality’ and ‘facts’. The post was open from start to finish that they were telling you that otters did ‘horrible things’ because they wanted to ‘break the illusion’ or whatever. It was full of language and tone that implied or outright said that people were ‘stupid’ or ‘foolish’ for liking otters, and that they should be punished with this information. This fact. This fact that was a twisted form of humans applying their moral concepts on to wild animals, to begin with, but was also simply being put out in to the world to hurt people for liking that animal. And then I think about how everyone started sharing this ‘fact’, post after post sharing the same tone and language of punishment, of implied ‘stupidity’ for ‘not knowing’. People gleefully commented this ‘fact’ on thousands of otter picture posts, they posted it a million times on the otter fan facebooks, they made tiktoks, they hammered it in over and over again. Don’t like otters. Don’t think they’re cute. They’re Bad™️. You’re a Bad™️ person if you like them. And people genuinely believed that. I saw so many people genuinely hurt by this, who thought they were a bad person and needed to stop liking or sharing otter pictures. Or they’d add a little note at the bottom, ‘I know otters are Bad™️ but I still think they’re cute.’ And I can’t not think about how pointlessly fucked up and cruel that entire thing was from the start, and how manipulative and shitty it was. And how it spun out into the universe until even now, on an otter video posted earlier this year, there’s dozens of comments about how otters are Bad™️ because one person decided that this wild animal doing something that is repugnant to humans, the animal with no knowledge that this is Bad™️ or with malicious intent (because it’s a wild fucking animal), meant they needed to hurt and punish anyone who liked that animal. And, finally, that people were so afraid of being seen as morally wrong/Bad™️ that they destroyed their love for this animal on the word of some fucking rando online without stopping to look internally at their own moral compass and understanding of animal behavior.

(because i guess i'm not quite done talking about roberta's oprec from my last post on fiction within fiction in ak)

spoilers for roberta's oprec. i recommend reading it btw, at least in a story reader if not in-game

when the morgue worker asks her to think about how roberta herself would like to see her friend made up, they ask her about when cynthia was at her most beautiful. and roberta, going beyond appearances, finds herself thinking about cynthia at her most passionate, and cries. because no matter how good a job she does, no matter how well-constructed the fiction, reality is reality. she can't change the ending of her friend's story, no matter how much she wanted it to be a happy one

the oprec raises some interesting questions: is roberta making her friend look happy a lie? and, lie or not... is that a bad thing?

the embalming, the makeup - who is it for? this creation of a narrative that erases suffering? it's certainly not for the dead, and the only people who ever see it or even know it was done are roberta and the morgue worker, because the cremation happens basically right after. practically speaking, this story roberta is telling, this fiction she creates, can really only be for herself. but i think it's too simplistic to conclude that it is just selfish comfort. embodied in this story is roberta's wishes that her friend's passion could have been answered by the world they lived in, instead of being betrayed by reality

but who is roberta to be telling that story, for her friend with no voice? roberta wonders about this herself, when she gets that urge to erase all her work. but then she concludes—just for now, she wants to be an embalmer. she wants to let her friend "leave this world happy, even if it's all fake". in this way, roberta claims the role of storyteller, even if no one gave her permission to—after all, there is no one left to give permission. but she does so anyway, inserting herself back into her friend's tragedy from the outside (remember, her friend never actually sent that letter).

and so roberta tells her friend's story one last time, to a stranger, letting her live for just a day longer in their hearts...

Jon has long since stopped paying any attention to whatever dull show Martin has put on- some sort of baking competition. So very… Martin. Jon hardly thinks it very interesting. He’s not exactly captivated by the sight of people cooking.

And then Jon looks sideways and blinks, mind going blank except for a small oh.

Martin has fallen asleep on him, head lying on Jon’s shoulder and weight entirely supported by Jon. He can’t move without disturbing Martin entirely. But he  should. Move, that is. He’s got entirely too much work to do to be lying around, letting his coworker sleep on him!!

But… Martin needs sleep. He’d been trapped in his flat by… worms. For two weeks! Jon can’t imagine Martin got very much rest, knowing that those things were after him. It’s just human decency to let Martin rest a bit, after that ordeal. And Jon very much has human decency, thank you. No matter what the others may think.

So he stays perfectly still, not daring to move and disturb Martin. It’s for Martin’s benefit only. There is nothing else going on here at all. 

After several minutes of this, Jon decides he can’t sit around and do nothing for too long. He has work to do, after all. So slowly and very, very carefully, he extracts one arm from underneath Martin and tries to remove the rest of him from Martin’s grip. But he barely frees his other arm before there is a soft grunt from beside him.

“...mmph… Jon..?” Martin slurs groggily, shifting a bit and turning his head to look at Jon, eyes half-open and a bit unfocused in the way that human eyes are prone to do upon waking up.

Jon freezes and coughs commandingly, doing his best to cling onto his rapidly declining dignity. He is still Martin’s boss, after all. “Yes, Martin?”

“...Stay?” Jon stares longingly at his office door, barely ten feet away, and back at Martin. He isn’t going to make it back to his office, is he? He sighs and reluctantly slumps back into his seat on the couch, trying not to think about how horribly unprofessional this is. If Elias- or heaven forbid Tim and Sasha- ever found out about this- Jon buries his face in Martin’s arm, which has draped back across him, and desperately tries not to think about why he didn’t protest. He’s Martin’s boss, he could simply say he has work to do and Martin wouldn’t question it. But… making Martin sad feels like kicking a puppy. And- maybe he can spare a few minutes before he has to go back to work-

It’s just a nice thing to do. As coworkers. Nothing more to it.

Otter and opossum facts?

otters: there's lots of 'em! (and they're already on my list of species line-ups to do)

sea otters (Enhydra lutris) are one of the biggest otters, with males sometimes weighing over 90 lbs (40.8 kg). but unlike most marine mammals they don't have blubber to keep themselves warm. instead, they have the densest fur coat of any animal.

opossums: there are...even more of them... according to wikipedia's counting, "it comprises 93 species in 18 genera."

the Philander genus is known as the "four-eyed opossums," so called for the spots of lighter fur above their eyes, which look rather like cartoonishly large eyebrows.
