If I Could Reform The Jedi, Here's What I'd Do

Remove any kind of age limit to joining. One of the big things that jumped out at me as dodgy about the Jedi is that they were reluctant to allow Anakin to join the order partially because he was too old, even though he was only 9. As their other concerns about him were over his fear for his mother, it seems to me that the Jedi prefer that the children who join are too young to properly remember their families, so the Jedi are the only thing they remember. This is dodgy as hell and smacks of child indoctrination, so if I could reform the Jedi I'd change it. Any child, regardless of age, should be able to join and there should be some kind of program for adults to be trained too.

Oversight for Masters and Padawans. Clearly, there isn't any kind of system or oversight over the Master/Padawan pairs in the Jedi. In proper canon, Ahsoka is assigned to Anakin, even though he is very clearly not a suitable master, being as he's only 19, has literally just graduated to knight and is obviously very reckless and prone to endangering himself and others around him. In the, now non-canon, books, Qui-Gon repeatedly mistreats Obi-Wan and no one ever does anything about it. So, clearly, there needs to be some kind of oversight.

Support for Jedi who choose to leave. It doesn't seem like there's any kind of support for Jedi who choose to leave the order, which doesn't seem right to me. While some Jedi, like Dooku, might have wealthy family who can support them, most probably don't have any family that they know. So what is in place to help these Jedi? Are they just sent out into the Galaxy penniless? I'm guessing there's no emotional or mental support either, considering Dooku leaves then almost immediately begins Falling. As does Xanatos, in the non-canon books. I'd put a transitional support system in place.

A better system for deciding who gets sent on what mission. The premise of the Clone Wars movie is that Anakin, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka get sent to rescue baby Rotta the Hutt. The Council thought it was okay to send Anakin on a mission involving Tattooine, where Anakin was enslaved and his mother died, and the Hutts, who enslaved him. That cannot have been good for his mental state. I'm not sure if it's canon or not but Dooku was, at one point, sent on a mission to his home planet, where his father left him to die of exposure as a baby. To give credit to the Jedi, I don't think he was meant to encounter his father, but still, that's not smart. In the non-canon books, Xanatos goes on a mission with Qui-Gon to his home planet, wherein they have to stop his crime lord father. Who the hell thought that was a good idea?! Not-so-coincedentally, these three Jedi all Fell. I'd set up some kind of system so Jedi aren't sent on missions involving places and people that have caused them trauma.

A mental health support system. Very, very obviously the Jedi have no mental health support system at all. Also very very obviously, they really need one. Anakin, Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Quinlan Vos and more would have heavily benefited from some mental health support.

A research requirement before missions. It's unclear if the Jedi are required to do any kind of research before they're sent off on missions. I'm uncertain if it's canon or not, but part of Jango Fett's backstory involves his people being slaughtered by the Jedi because the Jedi thought they'd been killing civilians. If the Jedi had done a modicum of research, they'd have discovered that that particular faction of Mandos didn't harm civilians. The entirety of the clone wars might have been averted. So there definitely needs to be a research requirement before missions.

Independence from the Senate/Republic. This is the big one. The Jedi being so involved and connected to the Senate/Republic means that they can't help non Republic planets and peoples, so large parts of the Galaxy go unaided. It also means they can be forced into things like leading a slave army of child soldiers, like in the Clone Wars. It's a religious order, there's no reason they need to be connected to the Senate/Republic.

A succession-esq Fanfic where Dooku is count of Serenno with Feemor, Xanatos, Obi-Wan, and Anakin as his potential successors.

Feemor: realizes Dooku has little interest in him so makes it up to himself by spending all the money he can.

Xanatos: a little too good at being an evil capitalist. He has all the bad qualities that Dooku has which means he dislikes him.

Obi-Wan: the favorite who refuses to have anything to do with the family title and wealth because of what Qui-Gon taught him. Often pulled into drama anyway trying to look after Anakin. He's very good at doing the dirty deeds needed to run the business and hates that about himself.

Anakin: the youngest by a decade and a half who is determined to beat Xanatos but who was also raised mostly by Obi-Wan so has to deal with corruption and being pushed into doing things he'd rather not do.

Padme: either married to or engaged to Anakin who adds more complications by being more well known than her husband as well as a dogooder so he has to hide things from her. Maybe running for supreme chancilor and Anakin's hijinks causing problems for her campaign.

Qui-Gon: can't decide if he refused to be heir apparent or if he was written out of the will.

Ahsoka adopted by Anakin and Padme and is trying to figure out if she was for votes/capital with Count Dooku or if they do care about her.

I have often given Qui-Gon Jinn a hard time because he’s so often used in STAR WARS fandom as a weapon to beat on other characters I love and it makes it difficult to like him, as well as it overshadows who the character himself is. So, to help balance that out some, I wanted to do a set of recs to remind myself–and just share some happiness in!–that I actually do very much like Qui-Gon! He’s a good person who really loved the people around him, he cared very deeply, he had an amazing friendship with Yoda (seriously, that Yoda’s the one he reaches out to when he becomes a Force Ghost, that even after death, Qui-Gon loves his Jedi family, it gives me feelings in my feelings place every single time), and one of my favorite things about Master & Apprentice is that I often got the impression that he knew he was kind of obnoxious sometimes, but he was at peace with it, he was fine with that. They thought they had found everyone who had memories of a dark future after the force surged. It was pretty obvious with Master Windu suddenly shaving his head, Master Qui-gon asking other Masters to help train his Padawan, and Master Tahl collecting bright paintings. They honestly thought they did until Padawan Xanatos enters the creche, and Initiate Kenobi screams.

It had all started with a huge disturbance in the Force that had left Master Yoda with a major headache and an ill feeling in his stomach. It was followed by a vision, a terrible vision of darkness, death and despair. Those who had seen the vision, only a hand full of people, knew it to be the future, they knew that it had happened. So they had done the only logical thing, they had searched each other out. 

Master Yoda, Yan Dooku and Sifo Dyas had been the first. Over the time a couple of more were revealed, namely Master Yaddle and Plo Koon. After that, they had thought that they had found everyone, who could remember, who had SEEN the dark times ahead of him. For a time, everything was normal again and the five Masters pretended not to be different. It did work, to a certain degree. A couple of other decisions had been made, but nothing major. They had agreed to only interfere, were they had too. Dooku had not approved of that idea and his reason was quite clear. His former Padawan was still in danger of Xanatos falling. That event, though no one had realized it back then, had been the beginning of it all. With Xanatos’ fall, Qui-Gon had changed. It had been the reason, why he had not waited for Obi-Wan to join him in his battle against the Sith Apprentice.

It was truly astonishing how such a small and seemingly insignificant detail, can change the whole outcome of the galaxy. The five Masters knew that too, which is why they did not want to act rashly. It would have been easier, had they known about the future sooner, then they would have been able to stop Qui-Gon Jinn from taking on Xanatos in the first place. But things were as the Force had willed it and at least the five Masters agreed on this, the Force would guide them. Just as it had guided Yan Dooku and Sifo Dyas back into the light, as it had guided Yoda, Yaddle and Plo Koon to trust them, despite what they had done in the dark future. The Force truly moved in mysterious ways.

But then, everything went different. It had started with Mace Windu shaving his head, which he had done to a much later point in his life. In the dark future, Mace had done so to honor his origins. But at this point in the timeline, he shouldn’t know about the ritual. It was curious, but the Masters pushed it aside for now. Perhaps one of them, had said a word too much and changed a little detail, which had caused Mace Windu to shave his head. And it was not like it was a dramatic change that would change the whole galaxy, right?

It didn’t stop there though. It was after Master Tahl had begun collecting bright paintings and staring at them for hours, as if she wanted to burn them into her mind and after Qui-Gon was asking other Masters for guidance and help with his Padawan, that the five Masters became truly suspicious. At first, Dooku had been a suspect, but the brown haired man with the beginning of grey hair in his proud mane, had denied having spoken to Qui-Gon. They believed him. Yet, they still didn’t act. They had no real prove, not yet. Something was still missing.

And the missing piece of the puzzle came, when the news of a major incident in the creche reached their ears. The whole Council had been on the run, the creche was a sacred place, and what the five Masters saw, disturbed them. There was a very distraught Obi-Wan Kenobi, he had barely outgrown the title of Crecheling, who was in Master Qui-Gon’s arms. The young boy wouldn’t let go and neither would the tall Jedi Master, no matter what the creche Master said or tried. They were not the only one there. Xanatos DuCrion was standing a few feet away from his Master and the Initiate, who was sending him scared looks. The raven haired boy in question, was completely confused. 

It took a moment for the commotion to calm down again and even longer for little Obi-Wan to calm down again. He remained in Qui-Gon’s arms, who held on with the same determination. Apparently the young ginger haired boy had started screaming and crying, when the raven haired Padawan had entered and instead of letting one of the creche Masters near him, he had run straight to Qui-Gon, who had automatically picked him up.

Xanatos had sworn that he had done nothing to the boy, that he had not even seen him before this visit and while the five Masters new that to be true, the rest of the Council was sceptical. Such a reaction was not normal, everyone agreed on that. He hadn’t done anything to Obi-Wan, YET and ‘yet’ was the keyword.

But there was no prove that Xanatos had done anything to the boy and so he had not been punished. The five Masters however, had looked deep into each others’ eyes, silently holding a whole conversation. It was time to meet up again and this time, they needed a couple of more chairs, for it seemed that their little circle of people who knew about the dark future, had just grown.
