A Trapezoid of Foils: Judai/Yubel and Amon/Echo

I'm back on my bullshit, and my bullshit is yelling about the trashfire that is Judai Yuki and Yubel. This post is a collection of thoughts on how Amon and Echo were clearly meant to reflect Judai and Yubel in some way or other, and how it feels like it should be neater than it is. The parallels are there, but it's not fully symmetrical and some of the angles are kind of weird...so yeah, kind of like a (non-isosceles) trapezoid!

(Geometry Tumblr do not @ me, I'm doing my best with this metaphor)

Spoilers for GX season 3, naturally. I haven't said it before, but for this post as well as previous ones I'm basing all information and characterization on the sub version of GX rather than the dub (which drastically changes Yubel's backstory and motives).

Yubel and Amon

This is the most obvious one, because Yubel spends two whole episodes and honestly some of their most iconic monologues trying to tear Amon down after building him up the whole season.

They're both antagonists willing to cause harm to the one they love for their goals. For Amon, that goal is the power to build a utopia. For Yubel, the harm is the goal - or at least, the metric by which they will have achieved their goal (showing their love for Judai).

Yubel, of course, claims that Amon is more selfish in his use of harm. Pain is love in their philosophy, but it's mutual pain - dishing out the pain without taking any back would only be mere cruelty. This of course misses the nuance that Echo wanted Amon to use her as a sacrifice, while Judai didn't welcome any of Yubel's twisted affections.

Still, from what I've seen most people agree that Yubel comes across as more "honest" one way or another. And to understand why things feel that way, it's important to look at their backstory and motivations, as well as how their motivations change.

Yubel dedicated themself to Judai's past life, tying themself to him through lifetimes, and in the present remained true to that devotion in unwanted ways. When Judai sent them to space and it ended up being Oops! All Torture, Yubel developed their sadomasochistic philosophy as a coping mechanism and an attempt to reconcile Judai's past promises and present actions.

Upon their return to Earth, they planned to return the "favor": by sending Yubel to the pain and isolation of outer space Judai made them stronger (i.e., infected by the Light of Destruction, with all that entails), so they'll give him his own painful experience (all of season 3) to make him stronger (awaken his power as Supreme King). Then they'll reunite, having both demonstrated their love for each other, and [this part is where the Light of Destruction really twists up their thinking]. Everything they do is in the name of this motive*, whether Judai really likes it or not.

Amon dedicated himself to the Garam conglomerate with Echo by his side before being replaced by his younger brother Sid, the sole blood Garam sibling. He nearly murdered Sid before changing his mind and dedicating himself wholly to his brother instead, a decision Echo and Yubel both describe as willingly chaining himself to their service. Even when given an opportunity to become the heir (all it'd take is watching his brother die to illness, not even murder) he rejects it, and begs for a way to save him.

And yet, when when given the opportunity he made a deal with the devil to break the chains he put on himself and abandon that same family. Then when he gets the chance to obtain power by sacrificing someone he loves, he does exactly that. Then he plans to become king of a utopia free of suffering, and always remember Echo.

So then, what are Amon's motives? Is he somebody who got tired of being abandoned or unappreciated? An ends-justify-the-means idealist? Just a power-hungry hypocrite? It's hard to tease out a consistent character and ideology from him. And in a show where people wear their hearts in their decks, I think this part of why people hate him - and so does Yubel.

Yubel hates Johan because he's terrifyingly like Yubel in some ways, focused and protective and dear to Judai.** Yubel hates Amon because he can't be like Yubel at all, resenting the brother he dedicated himself to and sacrificing the person he loved for power in an empty world forever devoid of that same person.

No way Yubel can be that kind of person, right? Otherwise, what was it all for?

* To be fair, you don't know all of Yubel's backstory by the time of their final duel with Amon. However, even removing the context of their past life that duel together with Yubel!Johan vs. Hell Kaiser establishes Yubel's central motivations more coherently than they do Amon's.

** Help, I know there's been other essay segments on this topic, text and video alike. But I saw a lot of them back in early 2023 when I was mindlessly going through GX material in a haze of hyperfixation and now I've forgotten all the other good sources.

Yubel and Echo

If Yubel's parallels with Amon are about their dedication, Yubel's parallels with Echo are about who they're dedicated to. Both believe in their loved one's destiny to become a king, and take actions to make them that king.

Yubel has historical basis in that Judai is quite literally the Supreme King, bearer of the gentle darkness. To help him achieve that role, Yubel enacts a plot to break Judai until he awakens his Supreme King side. It fits neatly into their schema of things: this is how they make the person they love stronger, so that they will thrive and survive. Make Judai stronger and awaken his old power, and all will be as it was meant to be.

Echo just believes that Amon is amazing enough that he would make a better king than anyone. When the chances arises to help break his chains and give him a world to rule, Echo takes it.

...And boy does she.

Both Yubel and Echo believe their loved ones are meant to be a king. Both give their lives in support of their loved one, and become weapons wielded in their service.

No wonder Yubel was shaken by Echo's devotion remaining within Exodia for just a moment - it's not all that far from their own.

Unfortunately Yubel's only direct interaction with Echo is goading her attack on field-Yubel during the final Amon duel. Otherwise they only speak of Echo as someone used and abandoned by Amon - which in itself has potential, given Yubel's own feelings about Judai sending them away.

I think GX could definitely have explored this connection a bit more. There's space to fill here.

Judai and Amon

As noted above, Judai and Amon both have roles as kings - at least, in the eyes of their single most loyal people. Judai holds the title of Supreme King as the wielder of gentle darkness, and while not confirmed his past life sure looked like a prince. Amon simply has ambition, talent, and an ideal world in his mind.

And in operating with the ambition of kings, they both do terrible things to achieve power. Judai lays this out explicitly in the Edo vs. Amon duel:

Amon lets his need for power get in the way of his other relationships and priorities, and sacrifices the ones he loves to obtain Exodia similarly to how Judai sacrificed his friends and eventually uncountable innocents for his own goals - finding Johan, and then ruling as Supreme King. Straightforward, right?

But I think there's another parallel between the two that's a lot more interesting. Or...most of a parallel. Namely, their relationship with their other halves and the responsibility of a loyal follower who would give up anything for you, be it their life or their humanity.

What do you do when the person you love most dedicates their existence to you - to the point of throwing everything else away, even their very life?

Of course, the Judai-Yubel and Amon-Echo situations aren't exactly the same even putting aside the issue of reincarnation. (For the purposes of this essay I'm not making huge distinctions between Judai and his past life, but if you want to get into the details I've written about that previously.)

Yubel went ahead and made their sacrifice without Judai's input, and all he could do was decide how to respond. He chose to dedicate himself back to them so hard it crossed lifetimes, so hard he chose to risk his own existence for them as well in his next life.

Amon, on the other hand, is the one who proposed Echo sacrifice herself for him. Echo agreed to it, and even by the end she stood by her decision. But Amon loaded the gun and pulled the trigger.

He tries to honor her sacrifice, of course. He's always mindful of Echo's sacrifice and what it means. But in the end, he did choose to sacrifice her, ultimately using her as a pawn. Their love never trumped his own objectives.

And I think the example of Amon and Echo leads to the question: if Judai had the choice of letting Yubel become a dragon or stopping them, what would he do? When it was explicitly their will?

This is another missed opportunity, one that could have solidified the parallels neatly. But GX never asks that question, so the answer is unclear. What could have been a parallel is just kind of...askew.

Judai and Echo

Okay, I admit there isn't a lot here off the top of my head. Probably the best parallels between them are in relation to their other halves, as the people "harmed" by their villainous partners, and how they respond to that harm.

Judai rejects Yubel's torments as unwanted attention, until he remembers the past and flips to understanding why Yubel did they did and makes moves to unite the two of them forever. Echo, meanwhile, understands Amon's motives from start to end and...lets herself be sacrificed, the end.

I don't know about this one. Really, ultimately Echo is supposed to be a willing participant in her own sacrifice but in the end I still don't feel like the narrative gave her a strong sense of agency in the matter and it really weakens my attempt to write this section.

In Conclusion

Some of these connections are stronger than others for sure, but I argue that they're all there in some way or another. They're very uneven and overall I'm not entirely sure what you're meant to take from the parallels, and I wish I could give something neat and concise for this section. Instead, it's a bit messy and misshapen - hence, the trapezoid metaphor.

Still, I think there's interesting room for thought in this awkward space. I was certainly thinking about these parallels while working on the latest chapter of Need (accidental last-minute plug?) and trying to figure out exactly what the prince felt while Yubel was in the middle of dragon surgery. What must it be like, to be in these relationships of sacrificial devotion?

Let’s Talk About Kaiser Ryo in Season 4

I think I intended to make a post analysing this way back when I first watched Sho and Ryo’s mini arc in season 4… almost two years ago now. Yeah… I had so much to say about season 4 back then and was also starting to watch Zexal for the first time and get really into it so I never really got around to talking about this in any details. Now that these episodes are fresh in my mind again however, I’d like to discuss them.

I have… mixed thoughts on Kaiser Ryo being alive in season 4. On one hand, his death in season 3 felt very final and the perfect note to send off his character. It didn’t make much sense for him to suddenly be alive with very little explanation and definitely felt like a cop out the first time I watched it. It felt very much like a last minute decision since within season four, he only appears in those episodes with Sho. I haven’t rewatched the episodes where the kids are being tormented by their anxieties in the world of Darkness yet but I don’t recall Kaiser Ryo even appearing in Sho’s warped visions of the future, despite the two of them agreeing to start a pro duelling league together. Plus he definitely didn’t appear at the graduation, and why not? Why wouldn’t he attend his little brother’s graduation if he was staying at the school’s infirmary to recover? Unless he wasn’t intended to still be alive until the crew started making the Sho episodes. Obviously I can’t confirm this, but it’s a feeling I’ve always had. Also the deck giving Kaiser Ryo those electric shocks rather than the damage to his heart just being from the electric collars he duelled in during season 2 is complete nonsense and definitely another asspull. Bringing Kaiser Ryo back did not feel like the original intention and is very poorly explained and feels ill fitting at first glance considering how well done his death in season 3 was.

With that said, I actually really like Kaiser Ryo’s presence in Sho’s mini arc. It’s rushed of course (some parts of season 4 are I will admit) but the fact that we actually get to see a character who hit rock bottom actually recover is really cool. And that recovery isn’t a straight line, he regresses when he accepts that duel and pushes himself too hard like he did in season 3, nearly getting himself killed before Sho steps in. I love that this arc really examines Sho’s relationship with Kaiser Ryo in more detail than we ever really saw before. Sho taking on Ryo’s deck to save him, despite knowing the risk of doing so, and, with a bit of advice from Judai, being able to make the deck his own and finally evolving this seemingly unchangeable deck was really cool. The theme of Kaiser Ryo throughout the series being this gifted kid who was unable to evolve past the “perfection” he found always really fascinated me.

This arc was the perfect way to deconstruct that mindset of his. To show that, no, there is always room for improvement, there is always a way to keep evolving and growing. Because that’s what this show is all about: growth. It’s a theme with everyone’s arcs throughout the show that really shines in season 4. Also, I do think it was important to give Sho and Kaiser Ryo’s relationship some kind of resolution. Kaiser Ryo’s dying words in season 3 were to Judai, completely ignoring the little brother that he grew up with and knew for far longer.

Yes the dub’s version of that scene did actually fix this issue, it’s one of the few things I like about the GX dub, but the GX dub didn’t adapt season 4, it’s not canon to the sub (which is what I’m talking about) so it’s not relevant to this conversation. Season 4 is what fixes this issue in the sub. Sho steps in to help his brother and makes Kaiser Ryo’s deck his own and in the process, evolves it in a way Ryo didn’t think was possible. Finally, after all the years of ignoring his little brother, who he found annoying and disrespectful in duels, Kaiser Ryo takes notice of his little brother and recognises and respects his growth. They had a broken relationship throughout the entire show due to both their bad attitudes and this mini arc forced them to change and show that change to the other so that going forward, they can finally have a positive more balanced relationship as brothers, something they seemingly never had before. And that’s really sweet, and wouldn’t have been possible to nearly the same degree without these episodes.

So while I think Kaiser Ryo’s return in season 4 was poorly implemented and explained, I think it did both his character and Sho’s character wonders and fits in well with the themes of this show. I’m glad this mini arc existed and I’m overall glad Kaiser Ryo returned despite the fumbled execution.

ok thats fair if u didn't have a guess. maybe it just felt really obvious to me because i am... myself...

its hard NOT to ship op characters. they all have such fun dynamics!! hannyabul and magellan is like.. im being silly when i say i ship them,, but also they ARE kinda real boyfriends to me.

its such a shame when ppl ignore the silly side of zoro. he has a few extremely wholesome, adorable, fun moments with luffy in wano and.. yeah ... im excited for u to see the interactions they have. add that to the list of things i am excited for!! lol. do the 3 dangly earrings signify he uses 3 swords??? i Never noticed this but if so... thats genius?? either way they r so pretty and in wano they zoom in on his earrings multiple times and show them like . waving in the wind or something idk. its so .. i love it. one more thing im excited about LOL

HELL YEAH.. i honestly am not a huge fan of the wci arc. i really disliked it the first time i read it but i think there r a lot of things that contributed to that. i couldn't remember a lot of the story from before, i started it in the anime and then switched over to manga at some point so it was a bit of a jarring difference, i have complicated feelings about sanji, and i was really sleep deprived when i was reading it. it was super difficult to get through cuz it just felt like everything dragged on and on.. so when i was rereading i was really dreading coming back to that arc and having to slog through it again. but actually it wasn't that bad. its still nowhere near being a favorite for me, but it does have a lot of good moments. anyways i think u will have a much better time than me and im looking forward to seeing ur reactions!! (as usual)

i watched the scene u sent and!!! robin puts her WHOLE SOUL into that "i want to live!!!" i dont remember the japanese version that well tbh cuz its been so long since i watched it. so the dub is probably what i will remember when i think of that scene now...

i wont kill u for liking la luffy.... because i havent watched it yet LOL. i might end up agreeing with u (although tbh i doubt i will,, i tend to be more fond of things im familiar with). i like edgelord zoro but its only when he has a healthy amount of silliness to go along with it :( im very very sad to hear he isnt nearly as goofy in the live action. ive seen a few moments of him joking around but.. i miss u silly guy... i miss u....

live action usopp seems like he has more rizz than anime/manga usopp (forgive me for using slang. i have been told it sounds really odd when i do bc it sounds like an old man using it LOL). i think that is a very interesting choice!! cuz i love usopp and i do think hes really charming and a lovely person,, but i feel like him having 0 confidence in himself is so important to his character?? but he seemed like he was an enjoyable character to watch so maybe i shouldnt get too hung up on it.

tongue piercing doflamingo is canon to me too 🫡 its very fitting considering hes always doin something with his tongue

straw hat crew supports and encourages sanji to explore his gender because at the end of the day their friend is their friend and gender doesnt matter

in terms of favorite characters we have in common: link, sesshomaru (i still haven't finished inuyasha. its been .. 10 years or something), kagamine rin (although tbh i like len more (im not actually that into vocaloid.. just a little?)), crowley, robin, doflamingo

i do know a lot of the characters on there but havent actually consumed the media theyre part of to feel super attached to them. i have too many things i plan to watch/read/play and i just end up not doing any of it LOL

i will keep trying for sure 🫡 ive been drawing a lot more recently. because.. im hyperfixating on anime characters. did i already say that

im pretty sure that any characters that have black eyes oda just makes them brown whenever their eye color is visible. and similarly, the anime just makes anyone with black eyes have grey or white. i dont know if oda has thought abt most of his characters eye color,, or if he actually does just plan for them all to have brown eyes. but headcanoning crazy eye colors is more fun imo!!

the anime notoriously does NOT know what colors things are. my favorite guy law has grey eyes in the anime and theyre gold in the manga.. which is devastating!? cuz gold is way more interesting and fitting and... yeah. i will forever be upset abt that. if they're gonna whiten all the characters to such a crazy level why cant they change the eye colors that are objectively WRONG (following manga canon)

brown is a good choice for luffy!!

grey definitely does work for zoro!! idk hes pretty no matter what.. and i cant clearly picture any color for him. i think most muted colors would look good

usopp having brown would look good too!! i was trying to think of the characters color pallets when i was imagining their eye colors and tbh hes worn a lot of brown so.

YEAH i saw that colorspread n that was why i was like . . yknow what... brown eyed sanji.. bc he looks very pretty there tbh. to go on a bit of a tangent, im kinda a blue eyed hater because my whole family (outside of my dad) has blue eyes . I've seen too much of it.. its boring. my mom has literal baby blues tho theyre so bright and. yeah its.. its striking.. its cool. its interesting. but the rest of us just have regular blue eyes. theyre dark and kind of grey. its too boring!!! and . therefore.. brown eyed sanji.. brown eyed sanji is best .

i am so .. i miss robins early design .. they kept her blue eyes (which again.. are objectively wrong according to manga canon) but they just had to make her like. the palest member of the straw hats. i love her having blue eyes so im not complaining that they didnt fix it but its like ... why did u fix one thing and not the other... i find that very frustrating. i wish they had just kept both her skin color and her eyes LOL. also cowgirl robin was so cool 😢

franky with pink eyes is SO GOOD??? tbh no matter what eye color he has i think it should be bright and vibrant

dressrosa is by far my favorite arc!! and then next i think is wano, egghead (the most recent arc), and impel down

those are my absolute favorites but other ones i like are arlong park, syrup village, punk hazard, sabaody/post war/return to sabaody, marineford (this would be another absolute favorite if not for the fact its so painful), whatever arc zoro joined in, drum island, skypeia, and.. controversially i do like fishman island despite also finding it a bit boring

i also rly enjoyed the reverie (it counts as a separate arc on the wiki) this one is apparently directly after wci.. i can never remember when it takes place chronologically. theres not really any action but i dont even care... i dont read for action

people dont like post timeskip one piece as much for some reason? its confusing to me bc almost all my favorite arcs are post timeskip.. im loving the focus shifting to the whole world.. and i love reading about huge world events. and i love theorizing about things. its all very fun

its really hard to choose just a few favorites LOL. i keep wanting to add other arcs i really enjoyed . augh.

YEA HIS 3 EARRINGS ARE FOR HIS SWORDS!! and yes im. so excited for so MANY wano moments (that i know of but havent been completely spoiled for: everyone in beast pirate disguises, zoro and luffy reunion (+ everyone else ofc!) sanji’s raid suit and subsequent Germa Angst, THE ZORO / SANJI DEATH PACT??. DEMONIO FLEUR!?!??! (GOING TO LOSE MY MIND AT THAT ONE) AND MORE. and if theyre gonna be animation zoro’s earrings like that then damn. i got even more to look forward to on top of tht

i like wci but mostly for the sanji arc. i dont care much for the setting (although the alice in wonderland insp is cool!) and i actually love pudding but the fact she’s apparently 16 puts a bad taste in my mouth every time she’s on screen. it doesnt feel like its dragging on yet but as much as i do wanna continue i keep not having the motivation bc i know i still have quite a bit to go through vjbjfdkn. im glad u enjoyed it more ur second time tho!! (katakuri….gotta get to katakuri at least)

yea the opla is so fun and a great ride but like anything it has its problems! although im still just amazed that it somehow seemed to break the live action anime curse and be the only one to do so with moderate success and yet it adapted. probably one of the hardest and longest anime to adapt ever. like how. do tell me if u watch it!!

dont even get me started on post timeskip robin. biggest downgrade. like at least franky is still himself and can change his hair and his face is still franky. someone else worded it best in saying oda took away so many features that made robin’s character design recognizable and unique that she feels like a completely different one. APPARENTLY robin was never supposed to be tan and anime assumed that too, but idc if u keep the blue then keep the skin color…its like. blatantly just colorism there

i didnt think fishman island was anywhere near as boring or badly paced as i heard. it was literally fine imo. not my favorite but not bad! except um. fishman island sanji can burn pls stop making me hate my favorite character (THOUGH I STAND BY RETURN TO SABAODY SANJI BEING WORSE THAN FISHMAN ISLAND. and i defintely see the post-timeskip haters points sometimes. there’s less time spent with the characters just. getting to interact and chill- partially bc the anime doesnt really do filler now but also partially bc now the crew is so large that oda never writes them all in one place. theyre always splitting up. and also the obvious things like robin getting sidelines and her design change, zoro is less silly, overall there’s less lightheartedness (although at times i can appreciate that). but the thing that bothers me most is it feels like oda got more brave with the off color jokes and sexualization and such. it was there pre timeskip (esp starting around thriller bark) but post timeskip its just like. sexualization and perv jokes are turned up to 200%. and yea im bitter bc sanji got worse in that aspect (although i actually prefer his post timeskip design! i like his stupid little goatee and his new suits/outfits are very nice! and his character development has obviously. gotten some spotlight) but damn if they couldnt give that to some of the other crew members too! though i digress. and ur right- the arcs and story HAVE improved and been super epic!

hmm..i think my favorite arcs would have to be [as of where i am currently] water 7/enies lobby, impel down, and dressrosa. whole cake will probably be up there when i finish it just bc of it being the My Guy Arc.

i love being the Older, More Experienced Fan of something so i can help the new fans out (opposite of gatekeeping bc its more like im one of those sign-spinners outside a pizza place you just fell in love with)

like ive been a One Piece fan ever since i picked up the manga from my local library at 9-ish years old (kind of funny: i had no anime/manga-loving peers, and tho my brother liked anime/manga, he didnt discuss it with me; i found it on accident because comics and manga were put together. so no one recommended One Piece to me and, in fact, i had wrongly assumed it wasnt well-known just bc my peers didnt know it. i just had read all the other manga in our teeny section, so that was how i started reading One Piece: out of pure "i guess theres nothing else new" lmao rip. id only been avoiding it because, it had the most volumes out of any other series there, yeah, but it was also missing random volumes like 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, 12 type shit. but id go to Barnes & Noble and read the missing volumes and not buy them bc i was poor and watch the show online to fill in the library's gaps)

and now, bc of the live-action show, i have friends and people i am a fan of getting into One Piece. and the anime-onlys of both, i get to tug on their clothes on our private texts or in their comment sections/their askboxes and say "go and switch to OnePace.net at some point. youre fine for now, but the anime eventually pads shit out and ruins the pacing (thus hurting the fights and comedy) because they didn't want to catch up to the manga's material. so OnePace.net is an edited version of all the anime series' episodes to better match the manga's pacing". which i then do tell them the difference between filler (beach episodes type shit, i love those) and padding (making a 15 second arm-wrestling match last 2 minutes, and have much of it be repeating animation where the two guys are just teeth-gritted and glaring silently with those Anime Growls Of Efforts) and that, in my opinion, One Piece does have plenty of good anime-only filler— which OnePace does cut out. but, it also cuts out the padding. and the padding is a REALLY BIG problem the further you get into the show. so watch the filler episodes/movies if it sounds fun to you too, but otherwise just switcg to OnePace. at some point. like. the beginning of One Piece's anime is fine because they had a lot of manga content then, so it isnt an issue until later but, yeah, at some point: switch over lmao

and now i have a bunch of anime-only friends texting me thanks as well as content creators, because i just pointed them towards something they didnt know they would need and now will fully avoid a problem they didnt know would eventually happen. its cool and exciting to see a fandom take care of one another and the source material like that. it also helps shine a light on WHY people complain the One Piece anime is too long AND helps you avoid that shit

bc, yeah, a lot of fans say "ditch the anime altogether, it gets slow; the manga is better" but i think you should encounter media the way you want to. if you have options, take your pick of those options. i like both because i like seeing how things get adapted, what do they change, add, leave out, so on. i like watching subs and dubs for that same reason, so of course i like reading manga in tandem with watching anime too lmao

and idk, it just gives me joy to see new fans reply back to my Fandom Elder tip/s with a "OOOOHHHH THANK YOU" and whatnot. gives me serotonin ♡ like hell yeah, no problem, have fun on my lawn, you whippersnappers, ill be here in my rocking chair if you need me lmao rip

Summary: Petra watches her ex fall for another

Word Count: 1.7K

It had been two long years since Petra and Levi ended things. It wasn’t messy but it was painful, she had seen it coming from a mile away. He had grown just as distant as he had been when they first met. Staying late at work, texting her dryly, and using terrible excuses. Although she had known it was coming, she still was a wreck when he actually ended things. She spent the months following the break up drinking wine and crashing at Oluo’s place regularly. After two years she was finally feeling better, dare she say, ready to get back into the dating scene? Or at least that’s what she thought, she was scrolling through her instagram feed when she stumbled across Hange’s page. It was someone’s birthday, someone she wasn’t familiar with.

A woman with bight eyes and an even brighter smile was in the center of the group photo. On her right was Levi, who had an arm thrown casually over her shoulder, the faintest trace of a smile on his lips. Petra pinched the screen to zoom into Levi’s side, where she saw a feminine hand on his waist. She stared stupidly at the image. She shouldn’t feel jealous, she had no right. It had been two long years since the break up. But the picture only dredged up old memories of times when she would hold Levi that same way. When that smile was directed to her. She then turned her attention to the caption, which read:

Happy Birthday (Y/n)! 24 never looked so good!

She then scrolled through the comments, many of them consisted of birthday wishes and support. She lost interest when she didn’t see Levi’s username and instead went back to the collection of photos, three of them in all. The group one that she assumed had just been taken, the second one was a picture of Hange and you on the beach, Petra felt a involuntary wave of self consciousness wash over her at the site of you in a swim suite. The final picture was the one that hurt the most though, it seemed to be a very old picture of you, maybe from your early years in college? You were sitting on a couch with younger versions of Hange, Erwin, Levi, and Moblit. Levi’s arm was casually thrown over your shoulders. Why had he never mentioned you before? Were you the reason that they broke up? No Levi had assured her that it wasn’t like that, said he wasn’t seeing anyone else. She tried to stop herself from going down that rabbit hole, but she couldn’t seem to. Before she really knew what she was doing, she had clicked on your profile which she was almost disappointed to find as public. This meant that there was nothing stopping her from judging every perfect image that was posted, and to her pleasant surprise, there was only one photo of you and Levi. The photo was posted the week prior, the two of you were hiking in the mountains, the dusty trial behind you. Your face was flushed from the exertion of the climb, Levi seemed cool as a cucumber, his face blank and void of emotion. She scrolled through the post and found a video, the sound of your shoes crunching and Levi talking behind you were clear as day.

“I mean come on, who uses fucking Lipton? Have some god damn class.” Levi spat, as you snorted in amusement. Petra found herself chuckling along with you at Levi’s little rant. She felt a rogue tear slide down her cheek when you showed the phone to Levi, who’s face fell from being mildly animated to apathetic once more. You cackled as he swiped the phone and the video ended abruptly. It was so innocent, it was clear from the rest of your page that you were a private person, much like Levi. With little indication that you were dating him, it left her wanting to know more. More about the girl that had taken her place, had managed to worm her way into Levi’s heart of stone and make herself comfortable. As soon as these thoughts crowded into her head, she deleted instagram all together and powered her phone down, determined to wipe her memory of the images she had seen.

The music was a nice distraction from the awkwardness that hung in the air. You had arrived uncharacteristically early to Hange’s party, and consequently meeting a whole group of people that you had never met before. The new people were about your age, three young men and one stunning young woman. It was early fall and Hange’s annual bonfire bash as you all had dubbed the event. Basically you lit a massive fire, when you were younger it was your past assignments from your pervious school year, then it became just regular old wood. You tapped your finger against the cool beer bottle as you leaned up against the counter, the men were laughing obnoxiously as they dropped the alcohol that they’d brought into one of the many coolers. The woman was looking at you almost nervously, she seemed extremely on edge, shifting her weight back and forth, eyes wandering around the room in a jittery manner. You frowned, wondering what was bothering her, but ultimately deciding that it was not really your business. Erwin shimmied behind you, his hands on your shoulders as he slide past you into the kitchen. You caught his arm, clinging to his familiar presence.

“Erwin.” you hissed as he stooped to reach your level.

“Who are these people?” you asked as you held his bicep firmly in your grasp. He pulled away and looked at you with a confused expression.

“You mean Levi didn’t tell you?” He said slowly, clearly he was unsure if it was his place to speak on the relationship between Levi and these people.

“No....” You said carefully, not wanting to make Erwin uncomfortable.

“Oh well they used to work in the same department before Levi switched.” He said, he looked over to the men and motioned for them to come over, they ambled over with curious expressions.

“What’s up Erwin?” the dark haired man asked as he looked between the two of you.

“Just thought I’d ought to introduce you to (Y/n) here, she’s an old friend of ours from high school.” Erwin explained, his hand still comfortingly placed on your mid back. You waved shyly and smiled at all of them, including the girl.

“Pleasure to meet you.” The blonde with a ponytail said, outstretching his hand to shake yours.

“I’m Eld, this is Gunther, Oluo, and that fine young lady over there is Petra.” He said, pointing at all of them respectively.

“It’s so nice to meet you guys!” you said sweetly as you struck up a conversation with Oluo about what they thought about the department that they worked in. It didn’t go unnoticed that Petra remained nearly silent, her amber eyes wide and a bit fearful. When the interns arrived, the men were quick to go help them carry in the alcohol that they brought, leaving you and Petra alone in the kitchen. You cocked your head at her as you poured some pretzels into a large bowl. The warm glow of the setting sun cast a halo over her head and you couldn’t help but voice your admiration for her.

“You’re really pretty.” you gushed as she blushed at your words and turned to look at you with wide eyes.

“So are you...” She returned the compliment and you smiled, feeling more at ease now that the two of you were alone.

“So how long have you known Hange?” You asked conversationally as you crumpled up the bag and tossed it into the trash.

“Hm let’s see...about four years now?” She responded with a bit of a wistful tone.

“Really? I’m surprised we haven’t met sooner!” you chuckled as the two of you opened a bottle of wine and poured it into two large glasses. The two of you strolled out into the bark yard, where Hange and Moblit were chucking large pallets of wood onto the fire pit. You and Petra sat down in two lawn chairs watching as Hange and Moblit bickered over if it was safe enough to light the fire with gasoline.

“I am too, you seem....like a really nice girl.” Petra said a bit downcast as she looked deeply into her wine.

“So do you! We should grab breakfast ooo or maybe even brunch sometime!” You said excitedly and Petra sat there in awe, wondering if there was even a mean bone in your body. Or if you had any clue that she had dated Levi.

“Yeah...this is kind of random but...are you dating Levi?” She blurted out, her face turning to look at you with a flushed expression. You nodded nonchalantly and took another sip of your wine.

“Yeah we just started dating about a year ago.” You said with a shrug, Petra inhaled, readying herself for the next words that would either make or break the future relationship between the two of you.

“Did...you know we dated?” she said, cringing when the words left her mouth. She sounded crazy and she knew it, but she felt obligated to clear the air between you before it got bad.

“Hm I think he mentioned it once or twice, and Hange told me about you when you first started dating.” You said looking up thoughtfully, your tone held no malice or any sign of ill will.

“You’re not...”

“Insecure? Nah, and don’t take that like I’m being cocky! I just mean that...”

“No, no let’s just not do this. I’m sorry for bringing it up. God I’m such a bitch.” Petra went to stand and you followed her, catching her wrist.

“It’s alright really, I don’t care about what happened between you and Levi. It’s frankly none of my business, I just...wanna be friends with you.” you smiled at her sheepishly as she looked at you with wide eyes.

“Oh” She managed to say dumbly.

“That is if you want to be friends.” You said, letting go of her hand and giving her some space.

“Yeah...I think that I’d like that very much.” Petra said with a bright smile.

In honor of Women’s History month, I couldn’t bare to write something that was a stereotypical jealous ex, so I did the next best thing and wrote this more geared towards the reader and Petra bringing each other up instead of tearing one another down. As someone who was apart of the fandom back in like 2014 I am way too familiar with writers turning Petra into a psycho bitch, and I don’t like that. SO I hope that this is good enough to fit the prompt!

Pretty much. I don’t think I personally know anyone who’s seen Fusion but hasn’t seen Xros Wars (especially since Hunters never got dubbed here). And to be fair, that one in particular practically checked off all the boxes to rub modern adult anime fans the wrong way -- sloppy typos everywhere, censorship not only on designs but also thinking Taiki’s backstory of a kid getting gravely ill was still too much, and scriptwriting that worked way better in the 90′s than it did in 2013. (Actually, I’m not really sure if it was that much more off-the-rails than Adventure and 02′s dubs were in this regard, but either way, trying to do that again in 2013 when the nostalgia factor won’t save them and the rest of the dubbing industry has moved on is a terrible look.)

I think in the end most hardcore Digimon fans want to see content as soon as it drops, so the fact that we haven’t had a dub produced near-simultaneously with the Japanese version since Frontier means the fanbase is usually going to watch in Japanese out of impatience, and the only ones watching an English dub had to have come in late, or have a high amount of dub loyalty in general, or have accessibility issues -- all that in an environment where it’s gotten more normalized for adult anime fans to watch things in Japanese. So chances are, most hardcore fans have already seen it in Japanese by the time its dub has dropped, and so to be a dub watcher for those you’d have to not only have liked the new content enough to want to watch it again from scratch, you’d also have to be enough of a dub enthusiast to make that commitment, and I don’t think that percentage of hardcores is particularly high -- much less high enough to make dub changes dominate fan discourse. And then on top of that Hunters and Cyber Sleuth and Appmon didn’t get dubbed (and I’m pessimistic about the reboot and Ghost Game’s chances), so after a certain point being into this franchise hard enough means you are going to have to be willing to look into media with Japanese audio.

I haven’t kept close tabs on the tri. and Kizuna dubs, but I definitely know the percentage of people who watched those dubbed (in general, regardless of language) is much lower in the hardcore fanbase than you’d think, especially since Adventure and 02 ought to be the ones people would most die on a hill about watching it in a way to match the childhood experience as closely as possible. (Ironically, this is actually easier to do in most dubs than it is for Japanese fans, where the entire human cast was swapped out, and I’ve legitimately heard of Japanese fans refusing to watch tri. or Kizuna from this factor alone.) But I noticed the majority of people who went for those without even touching the Japanese version were casual fans, who presumably kept sales up enough to keep justifying producing them, but were the type to vaguely jump in whenever they saw a Digimon thing and go back to other things once they were done. So among the hardcore fanbase, and its resulting fan discourse, I think even those dubs are basically something more for enthusiasts and people with particularly high attachment than they are anything that dominates the discussion compared to the Japanese version.

But yeah, on the flip side, the Japanese versions of Adventure through Frontier didn’t start getting properly subbed until around 2009-2012, so that’s around a decade of time where the American English dub was the main fallback for Western English speakers in fandom, and even those who were interested in it in Japanese couldn’t look into it if they wanted to. So that was around a decade for the Japanese version to be the comparatively obscure thing while a lot of confusing discourse about what came from what and misleading info was swirling around, and once that had a decade to make its mark on fans, it’s basically become impossible to fully get rid of all the preconceived notions it established (like the idea that the Adventure/02 dubs allegedly didn’t change anything significant still being a fallacy that’s treated like truth in this day and age). Probably not helped by the fact the legal availability of Adventure through Frontier's Japanese versions still isn’t great outside Japan, whereas at least Xros Wars and after are on Crunchyroll for various regions. I think fansubs have now been around for long enough that more and more people are starting to get into the Japanese version -- back when they were still new it was almost impossible for me to carry on conversations with very many fellow English speakers about the Japanese version because of how derailed the argument would get, but nowadays it’s easier to find people who know what you mean -- but it’s only going up very slowly, and I'm personally more interested in getting the discourse around it to be less confusing than I really expect that many more people to watch it in Japanese.

it’s the last episode. no precursor. let’s just finish this ride and see where it ends up.

ok, a last time recap is ok because 2-parter.

and Crocker face reveal! with song...uh...hm...you know, kinda feel like the live action movies did a better job on a live action Crocker. he does look the proper(ish?) age though, so you get points on that. he’s dubbed over though right? that does make it a bit off...Dolores is still alive??? uh, ok so plan, that’s standard. Crocker still does not seem into Vicky, so yay. EDIT: I stand corrected, Crocker isn’t dubbed (probably?) because that’s his original voice actor. Huh, ok, good for you my dude. Still awkward looking, but hey, you’re your original character so big points.

a Dune joke? Billie Eilish joke? sure, date this some more.

ok, making the actor hunch like Crocker isn’t really working, it’s just kinda awkward. but i did love the dramatic reveal and Viv being all “wait idk who you are, why is this dramatic” lol

ooo we get to see Fairyworld Prison. and animated Crocker in jail...from the front view...uh...ok...so implying he’ll be back as a villain. well no duh. also couldn’t really catch if any of the other inmates were important cameos...

but alright, that was the end of Fairly Odder season 1. final thoughts over all? well...it was better than the live action movies. pfft. ok that's not high praise, and honestly i don’t *really* dunk on the movies that much (save the 3rd, that is useless trash). no honestly, this isn’t nearly as bad as it could’ve been. it’s not exactly good, but it’s not offensively terrible either. it’s harmless, and at times it can be fun. i’m an adult watching a children’s show, i know this was not made for me, and what i think of it isn’t exactly what anyone wants or cares about either. but as someone who loves the original series (mostly), i can see what they were trying for, and could tell when they succeeded and when they didn’t. i criticized and tore apart the Sparky season, picked apart the movies, and broke down and bemoaned the lost potential of the Chloe season. i’m no certified expert, but i feel confident enough in my knowledge of the source, so honestly yeah, it’s not bad, we’ve had worse. the kids are doing a wonderful job here, and i hope to see them advance in their careers.

will this be a series i rewatch? probably not. if there’s a s2 will i watch that? uh yeah. i mean, that cast list had a bunch of characters not seen here that i have questions about...and i still have questions about chars we did see here, so there better be some explanation somewhen about this. but ultimately, woudl i recommend this? eh, if you are considering it, i say yes whole heartedly; if you already decided to pass, nothing i can say would change your mind anyways.

do you have an anime watch list for beginners like the best animes of all time

Hello Nonny, thank you so much for your question. This is going to be a long post so get comfortable.

Like any anime lover, I have my own ideas of what some of the best animes for beginners might be. Unfortunatly, a lot of the "best of all time" type anime is not really the best for newer viewers. Like for so many others, my first animes were epic series like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Sailor Moon and Inuyasha. These all hold special places in my heart and are all fun nostalgic or first watches.

The anime genres I tend to gravitate towards now are slice of life, comedy, drama, romance and shoujo with some sports, supernatural and mystery animes thrown in. So, keep that in mind as you read this list. If those are not your kinda things, then this is not the list for you. A lot of shows on this list are classics or highly popular in these genres. I've also choosen anime that comes in both English sub and dubbed versions because, for beginners, dubbed is sometimes easier to follow and enjoy. Subbed or dubbed, there is no judgment here as long as you are enjoying what you watch. Finally, I tried to stick to anime with mostly 1-3 seasons only. There is nothing wrong with the more epic long running series and many of these fall under "the best of all time" heading but seeing that an anime has 100+ episodes can be kinda daunting for a novice viewer. Now to the list...

First of all, if you are just wanting to try anime but, not wanting to commit to a whole series, I would recommend starting with a movie or two. Some classic films I would recommend would be Totoro, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle from Studio Ghibli. Some more contemporary films like, Your Name, Weathering With You, A Silent Voice and Wolf Children, would also be great anime starting points. These films are staples for any anime collection.

Now, as for anime series, here is just a list of 10 that I think quality animes and would be great beginner watches.

Ouran High School Host Club:

This reverse harem show is a much loved modern classic for a reason. It's full of fun characters and lighthearted comedy moments with just enough drama and romance to keep you coming back for more.

Maid Sama:

Misaki Ayuzawathe is the first female student council president for a previously all boys school. Now, her life is busy with maintaining top grades, keeping the male students in line, recruiting more girls to the school and keeping her part-time job at a maid cafe a secret. When one day Takumi Usui, the most popular boy in school, discovers her secret job, Misaki finds herself doing everything she can to keep him from revealing the truth to the whole school.

This shoujo has enough of comedy, romance and drama to satisfy anyone's appetite.

Fruits Basket:

After finding herself orphaned and homeless, high schooler Tohru Honda makes a new home with classmates Yuki and Kyo Sohma along with there guardian Shigure Sohma. But the Sohma's have a dark secret, they are under a curse that causes them to change into animals from the Chinese zodiac when hugged by members of the opposite sex. Now, Tohru must keep their secret as she learns more about this family and their curse.

There are actually 2 different versions of this show. Many people would recommend that you start with the completed classic 2001 version but, I'm going to say it's okay to skip that for later and dive into the 2019 reboot and ongoing series. The newer series is so beautifully animated and has a more detailed version of the story than its predecessor. This shoujo is full of drama, comedy, romance, supernatural mysteries and inspirational moments. You'll definitely need a kleenex box when watch this one.

Kamisama Kiss:

One day high school student Nanami Momozono finds herself abandoned by her father, penniless and homeless. After she saves a mysterious man in the park, he offers to help her by giving his home to her. She soon discovers that this gift home is really a rundown shrine and she has magically become local land god. Now, she must learn to juggle her school life and her new position as a land god. Luckily for her, a reluctant fox familiar named Tomoe comes with the shine and has to give her assistance with it all.

This classic is part shoujo comedy and part supernatural adventure. I definitely recommend this in the English dub if for no other reason than to enjoy J. Michael Tatum's voice work as Tomoe.

The Morose Mononokean:

Hanae Ashiya spends his first week of high school with a mystery illness that has left him feeling increasingly weak. He eventually discovers that the cause of his illness is a large fluffy creature that has attached itself to his back. When Hanae comes across a flyer advertising an exorcist who expels youkai, he decides that exorcism might be just the thing to remove the creature. The flyer leads him to the Mononokean and a magical tea room which suddenly appears. The Mononokean turns out to be a fellow classmate, Haruitsuki Abeno, who reluctantly helps Hanae but, demands that Hanae work as his assistant to repay him for the exorcism. Now, Hanae spends his free time working to learn about yokai spirits and how to best help the yokai that live in the mundane world.

This supernatural comedy is just fun to watch, with enough drama to keep you interested. It really has that classic Saturday morning anime adventure feel but, for a slightly older audience.

The Devil is a Part-Timer:

Just as Demon Lord Satan, a.k.a the Devil has nearly conquered the world of Ente Isla and destroyed his enemies, a hero named Emilia corners him and forces him and his top general to escape through a portal to modern day Earth. Emilia, of course, follows him determined to finally defeat the Devil. But now they all find themselves on Earth with no powers, they must discover how to survive even if that means the Devil must get a part-time job at Mc Ronald's just to pay the rent.

What can I say about this show... It starts out with an almost stereotypical supernatural action/adventure anime feel only to turn into a comedic slice of life with a little romance and the ocational fight sequence thrown in. This show is one of the best examples of how versatile anime can be and a great way to get a little taste of a lot of genres.

Death Note:

High school student Light Yagami stumbles upon a supernatural notebook that allows its owner to kill by simply writing someone's name down. Light soon sees the death notebook as a way to reform society's ills by killing criminals and undesirables to create world without crime. Once the police discover that a mysterious serial killer is targeting criminals, they bring in the worlds greatest detective, L, to find and capture this serial killer. This begins a epic battle of witts between Light and L.

This classic anime is a lot darker than anything else on the list but, it's definitely worth mentioning. It was one of the earlier animes I watched and I'm still a fan to this day. It falls mostly into the categories of thriller, supernatural, mystery, horror and crime drama. It is also another one that I'd strongly recommend the English dub over the subbed version. So, if you want to take little walk on the anime dark side, this is a good place to start.

Yuri On Ice:

After a disastrous performance and coming in last place at the Grand Prix, ice skater Yuri Katsuki is thinking about retiring. That is until his skating idol and living legend Victor Nikiforov shows up to his home offering to be his coach. Now, with Victor's help Yuri works to rebuild his career and fight his way to a gold medal at the Grand Prix Final.

Yuri On Ice is my all time favorite anime so, of course it's going to make the list. So much about the struggles and perseverance of the characters in this sports anime is inspiring. Then, when you add in a little romance, flashy skating routines to a great original soundtrack and the drama of competition, everything about this show gets a gold medal.

Free!-Iwatobi Swim Club:

Haruka Nanase has always had a strong connection to the water and a passion for swimming. As he starts high school, Haruka is reunited with childhood friends from a youth swim team, Nagisa Hazuki and Makoto Tachibana. The three decide to start a school swim team. Now, they must recruit a fourth member and train to be able compete in their first swim meet. Watch to see these guys bond as a team and friends and as they pursue their goal to compete at Nationals.

There are a lot of great sports anime out there but, this one is a good one to start with. Free! exemplifies so many standard tropes within this genre and does in an engaging way with an easy to understand sport. There are multiple seasons and movies for this series but, the first season, Free! -Iwatobi Swim Club, is satisfying enough as a stand alone.

My Roommate is a Cat:

Subaru Mikazuki, an introvert writer with social anxiety, adopts a stray cat after a chance encounter. Together they both learn they are not as alone as each of them believed.

This slice of life anime is sooooo relatable, cute and funny. If you're looking for something that's low key and will make you feel all warm inside, than this is the show you should start with.

Here are some honorable mention animes to also consider: Toradora, ReLife, Princess Jellyfish (I just love this show and think everyone should watch it), Black Butler (if you're willing to sort out the correct viewing order it can be worth it), the classic Avatar: The Last Airbender (yeah, yeah, yeah is it anime or isn't, doesn't matter it's a great gateway) and Kakuriyo- Bed and Breakfast for Spirits

So here are some of my top favorite anime for beginners recommendations. A nice mix of classic standards and a few newer shows that really show off specific genres. These are just my opinions, I'm sure there are many other animes that should probably make this list. first impression of them: i had never watched violetta before last year, but it was a SUPER BIG thing here in italy when it aired so i was kind of familiar with the main characters and like. their names and stuff. for this reason, i was kind of going off what people used to say about her when i was younger so like, Annoying Mean Girl Stereotype which. very fair for season 1 i guess. i do have a soft spot for those kind of characters tho so even though at first i was scared i'd only feel a lot of second hand embarrassment i already knew i was gonna love her with time (i also knew a redemption arc was coming and i was pretty excited about that). i truly do believe though that ludmila is an acquired taste cause after a while you have to like her. like you have no choice (also fun fact, since italian pronunciation is weird in the dub they changed some character names' spelling so you'd have ludmila turning into ludmilla, priscila was priscilla, camila was camilla and so on. i also think ramallo was roberto for some reason?? and of course naty turned into nata which 💀 sounds bad im sorry it means BORN in italian so what)

current impression of them: idk why i have fixated on her as much as i have but now she is my character im sorry. ok no but jokes aside i genuinely think that her s3 development was really good?? like there are so many ways in which they could've screwed it up (and believe me in some ways they have. this is still a telenovela after all lol) but the effects of trauma/change of heart didn't feel sudden or unbelievable at all (at least in the end), they kept her as the little bitch she was but from (derogatory) to (affectionate) and i love when media does that. overall: she deserves all the good things in life she'll get with her loving family - and priscila behind bars <3

least favourite thing about them: the s1-2 criminal record like this girl used to physically damage people??? like she threw a skateboard towards naty which 💀💀💀 how was she ever allowed back into the studio?? no that was instant expulsion ma'am. and that just came at the top of my head but there's so much i could mention she was really doing the most how were people not afraid for their lives. tldr i would say she did a lot of shit and got away with it too easily i guess

random headcanon: she ends up working in the music field in the future but does like a stylistic 180 once she feels she's distant enough from who her mother wanted her to be. so she feels a lot more free to express herself (iykyk) and anyways mullet ludmi my beloved, id see her branching into folk and that type of music (think folklore/evermore)

Summary: your mother works as Thor’s housemaid and you had to take over your mother’s job after she got sick

Y/N stood in front of the door, trying to ease her breathing. Trying to conjure enough confidence to knock on the prestigious door. This wasn’t supposed to happen, she thinks. But for my mother, I’ll do anything.

(FLASHBACK STARTS)

You silently cried as you watched the nurses take your mother to the ICU. It was unexpected. You and your mother were just having your usual dinner at home when she fell to the floor, unconscious. You immediately called for help which got you to where you are now.

The hospital.

You waited and waited… and waited. You never left the hospital. You never left your mother’s side. How could you? She was the only one you have. She was the only family you’ve got. You would do anything to protect her.

Nurses that come every once in a while always advise you to go home, take a shower and rest but you never listen to them. You would never leave your mother. Not when she needed you most. But then the doctor told you what was happening with your mother’s health and that’s when you snapped out of it.

Apparently, your mother has been suffering from a disease for a while now and she never told you about it. She would come in and out of the hospital to have a check-up but the doctor told you that she stopped coming all of a sudden. You remembered how you just started taking classes again because your mother had enough money to help you and insisted that you quit your job because she can pay for your classes. The day you started taking classes is the day she stopped visiting the hospital.

“What?” you whispered, feeling like a shitty daughter for not knowing anything and being the reason why your mother is in that death bed right now. To make it worse, the doctor had to tell you that your mother needed surgery as soon as possible.

“Then carry on with the surgery. Please! Please save my mother.” you begged, willing to drop down to your knees and beg some more. The doctor looked at you sadly and told you the rules about paying before proceeding with the surgery.

Then your mother woke up and told you to just leave it be. She told you to continue going to your classes and asked for a favor. She asked for you to pay her employer a visit and tell him what has been happening so he wouldn’t be confused as to why she stopped going to work. She wanted you to quit for her.

And that’s what you did. You went to her employer’s house but not with the agenda of quitting for her.

(FLASHBACK ENDS)

*Knock knock knock* She knocks softly on the door as she took a deep breath, easing her nerves. She straightened her back when she heard rustling on the other side of the door and wore her best smile. Well, it’s now or never. You’re doing this for mother.

The door opened and revealed Adonis himself- or what seemed to be a reincarnation of the god. He was unbelievably tall. He can tower over anyone and he is definitely towering over her. His short hair is as golden as the riches he probably kept deep into his mansion. His beard is neatly groomed that just added to his rich guy aura. His ocean eyes held emotions but are hidden far back by his intimidating gaze. He’s wearing a gray shirt that hugged his physique and showed off his humungous arms and black sweats that fit his long legs. To keep things short, he’s beautiful.

His stoic yet handsome face twisted into a smile that had Y/N’s heart leaping in anxiety. Who knew that her mother worked for a 21st-century version of Adonis?

“Can I help you?” his voice that held so much authority spoke up.

Y/N’s eyes widened in surprise and embarrassment as she cleared her throat and spoke quietly, “Hi! Umm, Mr. O-Odinson?”

He elicited a low chuckle and nodded in agreement, “Yeah. That’s me! But please, call me Thor.”

Y/N nodded in confirmation and sucked on her bottom lip absentmindedly. One of her mannerisms whenever she gets nervous. “Yeah… Well, my mother, __, she’s not really doing well right now. She’s currently in the hospital.”

“Oh… That’s why she hasn’t come in for a week now.” Thor nodded, deep in his own thoughts. “Is she going to be alright?” Thor’s questioned made Y/N blink blankly at nothing for a few seconds. How can such a beautiful man like Thor own a beautiful heart? How is that even possible? He’s handsome and he cares for your mother. Maybe he’ll accept your offer to take your mother’s job.

“Little one? You alright?” Thor’s voice snapped you out of your thoughts. What was the nickname all about?

“Yeah. I’m sorry. And no. She’s not doing too good and she needs to have surgery so she wouldn’t be able to come here anymore.”

“But that’s where I come in!” Y/N squeaked out before Thor could even say anything.

“Sorry...” Y/N smiled sheepishly but continued.

“Mr. Thor, I- My mother needs to go through surgery but we don’t have enough money to pay for it. If it’s okay with you, I would like to take over my mother’s job for her. Please, Mr. Thor? If it’s alright with you? We really need money for her surgery.” Y/N swallowed all her pride and begged the man in front of her.

Thor stared at her for a while, probably thinking about her words as she anticipated for his next words.

“Why don’t you come in and then we can talk about it, yes?” his voice held so much authority and seriousness that Y/N could only nod and follow him through the gigantic mansion.

Y/N yelped as oil started spitting out of the pan she was heating up. She hissed at the burning sensation when a drop fell on her forearm. “Ouch” she rubbed on the spot at a fast pace, hoping the pain would just go away. “You okay, little one?” Thor spoke up from behind her, watching everything that happened with an amused glint in his eyes. He stood up and walked over to her and stopping just inches in front of her. He was towering over her when he leaned down close to her face.

“W-what-“ Y/N stuttered as she stared up at him.

“Relax, little one” Thor gave her a reassuring smile and moved his face to the side of hers, reaching behind her to shut the stove off. Y/N looked up at him, trying to hide the embarrassment from her facial features when Thor gave her a cheeky smile as he looked down at her.

Y/N yelped when Thor took her forearm and checked the small burn. “Relax, little one. I’m just trying to help you. We should put an ointment on this.” he tooted as he started opening drawers and cabinets, looking for something. Y/N stood still, breathing heavily and trying to get over the fact that she just embarrassed herself in front of Thor and probably ruined her chances of taking over her mother’s job. He asked her to make him something for lunch and she tried. She really did but cooking is not one of her best traits. Neither is cleaning. Her clumsiness is the one to blame for that. She knows she can’t take her mother’s place and so does Thor.

“You know if you want to take your mother’s place, you should be able to take care of me, not the other way around.” Thor let out a small laugh while dabbing the ointment on the burnt part on Y/N’s forearm. Thor’s eyes widened in surprise when Y/N suddenly grabbed the hand that was nursing her forearm. “Please, Mr. Thor! I can learn! I can learn new things real fast. It will work! Please… Just give me another chance! I really need this job. It’s the only way I can help my mother. Please…” Thor’s face turned into a frown when the younger girl cried in front of him.

“Don’t cry, little one.” He finished putting the ointment and made his way to wipe the tears away from her face. “Don’t cry…” he repeated, brushing some hair away from her face this time around. “I-I really need to help my mother.” she sobbed against his chest when he pulled her towards him.

“I know. I understand. But I can’t have you working as my maid.” Thor cradled her face as he pulled away to examine her face. She was still sobbing, thinking that she had thrown her chances away. “I have a proposition for you.” He gave her a heart-warming smile that helped calm her down a little. “You see, I’ve had every single person in my life take care of me and I’m getting quite tired of it. I need someone to take care of instead. Not just someone. I need you. I want you. I want to take care of you.”

When Y/N moved away to untangle herself from Thor, he frowned a tiny bit that Y/N almost missed it. “Take care of me? What does that even mean?” Thor grinned at her curious face and shrugged. “It means exactly what it means. I want to take care of you, little one. From the moment I saw you, I knew I wanted to protect you.” Her face grew more confused as he spoke his words. “Huh? Why would you need to protect me? You just met me. I have to work for you so I can earn money for my mother. I don’t understand-” Thor cut her off by placing his index finger against her tear-stained lips.

“I know that, little one. I’ll pay you for keeping me company. I just ask for your company. That’s it.”

“Your company? I’m sorry. I really don’t understand any of what you are saying… You’ll pay me for keeping you company?”

“Yes. That means that you would have to give me the majority of your time if that’s alright with you.” Thor gave her a charming smile, giving her the idea that she could be comfortable around him. That she can trust him.

“But that sounds too good to be true! Like, I’ll just stay by your side and then I’ll earn money from that?” she tilted her head in confusion as she furrowed her eyebrows.

Thor chuckled but nodded in agreement. Licking his lips, he took her hand in his gigantic ones and gazed at her with adoring eyes. “That’s all correct, little one. Then maybe I’ll ask a few favors from you in exchange for helping your mother at the hospital, is that alright?” he gave her a hopeful look.

“Yes! Anything to help my mother!” Y/N yipped in excitement which earned a satisfied smile from Thor.

“That’s good to hear, little one.”

Days have passed and Thor was true to his words. He made sure that Y/N’s mother is well taken care of in the hospital. ____ had also undergone surgery when Thor started sponsoring them. All Y/N had to do was stay in Thor’s mansion with him and keep him company. She stayed in a guest room and would only accompany him if he wanted to converse with her.

Y/N and Thor were sat at the dining room, having their usual dinner. Thor hired a new handmaid called Percilla. A quiet but friendly old lady. Y/N would find herself asking her to teach her basic household chores without making a mess and Percilla was more than glad to help her.

The clinking of utensils is the only noise that can be heard in the room but then Thor decided to break the silence. “So, little one. I wanted to ask you something.” He set his spoon and fork down the table and turned towards her. Y/N turned towards Thor with a questioning look and a tilted head. “Huh? What is it, Mr. Thor?” He let out a short chuckle and reached for her hands on the table. Y/N’s eyes fluttered and so did her heart at the man’s actions.

“I have this gala that I have to attend this Friday and I was hoping you could come with me as my date.” He was so straightforward that Y/N had to take a second to process his words.

“Y-your date?” Y/N small voice spoke up after a long pause. Thor let out an airy laugh and nodded. “Yes. We did agree on you keeping me company am I wrong?” Thor unlatched his hands from Y/N’s and leaned his chin on his right one. Y/N’s face fell a little bit but she was quick to nod her head in a brisk manner. “Yeah! No! You’re right, Mr. Thor. I’ll accompany you in the gala.” she gave him a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes like it always would.

“Darcy, my designer, will come later to take your measurements for the dress you’ll be wearing this Friday.” Thor took a sip from his wine glass and stood up. “I’ll be in my office if you need anything.” he gave her a smile and left the room, leaving her with a conflicted heart.

After dinner, Y/N went back to her room and had a shower before laying down on the soft bed that was provided for her. It’s too much of a spacious room for her. She thought that it was unnecessary to have a room that big- like a huge apartment- for sleeping and showering but Thor insisted and Y/N could never say no to him. He gave her so much that all she wanted to do was to make him happy in return by following his simple instructions. She was satisfied to see his joyous smile when she agreed to stay in the huge guest room.

When the clock hit 9:30, soft yet rapid knocks fell upon the bedroom door that took her away from her thoughts. Y/N sighed and pushed herself to walk towards the door. Opening it, a girl with dark hair and a big smile greeted her. “Hi! I’m Darcy! You’re Y/N, right?” her bubbly voice filled the room as she let herself in, leaving Y/N to close the door. When Y/N turned back to Darcy, she started babbling again.

“You’re like really pretty! No wonder Thor kept you. I bet you would look good in floral. I KNOW you’ll look good in blue! It’s also Thor’s favorite color so that’s a win-win! I can do your hair too! Natural look looks good on you so light make-up would suffice. Oh, I can’t wait to see you all dressed up!” Y/N’s eyes widened in surprise as she tried to understand what Darcy was babbling about but only got the part where she would be fixing her up for the gala. Y/N smiled at the bubbly girl as she walks towards her. “It’s nice to meet you, Ms. Darcy.” she offered her hand to shake but Darcy just laughed at her.

“Oh, you’re really cute!” Darcy swatted Y/N’s hand away and pulled her close for a hug. “Just call me Darcy! I hope we become really good friends! You seem like a literal angel like no hint of evil nor dirt.” Y/N let out a short quiet laugh at Darcy who just stared at her with wide adoring eyes. “Like, at all.” she continued, her expression weirdly turning to a serious one in a matter of seconds. “Well, thank you for your kind words, Darcy. I think you’re really pretty too!” Y/N smiled shyly. Darcy let out a chuckle and pinched Y/N’s cheeks. “Such a cutie. Come on! Let me take your measurements and then we can talk and hang out!”

“All done! Can I play with your hair?” Darcy tucked the tape measure inside her bag and grinned at Y/N. “Uh… Yeah! Sure, go ahead.” Y/N responded with an unsure smile. Darcy yipped in joy and began doing numerous escapades on Y/N’s hair.

“Something’s missing…” Darcy had her right palm on her chin, imitating a thinking child. Y/N tilted her head and wore a fond smile at her new-found friend. Y/N jumped slightly when Darcy screamed and clapped her hands all of a sudden. “I know! Hey, Y/N! What do you say about going shopping?” and with that, Darcy left the room to probably tell Thor about their plans for tomorrow.

Thor has been busy for the past few days. The gala that will be held on the upcoming Friday has been keeping him from Y/N. That’s why Y/N isn’t surprised when Darcy dragged her to his office only to see him deep in his stack of papers. They were about to tell him that they’re leaving for the mall but it seems like he couldn’t care less about it, only humming in response when Darcy told him that they’re leaving.

“We need a ride” Darcy surprised Y/N with how she was brief for the first time since she’s met her. Thor sighed in exhaustion and motioned a hand absentmindedly, still has his eyes on the papers on his desk. “Take Heimdall with you. He’ll drive you.” A guy that’s about an inch smaller than Thor walked up to the girls and stared down at them with a poker face. Y/N gulped as she was intimidated by the man. “Hi, M-Mr. Heimdall. I’m Y/N. It’s nice to m-meet you.” Y/N gave her best smile, ignoring her nerves and held a hand out towards the tall guy. He surprised her by giving her a friendly smile and taking her hand with both of his. “Pleasure to finally meet you. I’ll be escorting you and Darcy. I assure you that you’re in safe hands.” With that, he walked out of the office, expecting the two girls to follow him.

Y/N took one last glance at Thor but seeing that he was still buried in his work, she followed Heimdall out of the office and out of the mansion. Darcy took a while before she entered the car with a huff. “Are you okay?” Y/N asked, not used to seeing Darcy with an infuriated look on her face. Darcy’s face went back to its usual bubbly aura when she turned to look at the younger girl and quickly nodded, reassuring her that everything’s fine.

The day was spent with Darcy buying Y/N stuff that is unnecessary such as make-up, perfumes, and lotion but she insisted that it would be useful. ESPECIALLY for the gala. One of the things that she bought Y/N is a blue sundress that she forced her to wear as they bought it. It’s a blue sundress that had little puffy sleeves and fell down in the middle of her thighs. She still wore her white sneakers but it made her outfit more adorable- Darcy’s words.

The car ride home was spent with Darcy’s continuous babbling and Heimdall’s occasional chuckle of appreciation from Darcy’s words. Y/N tried to pay Darcy her attention but the thought of Thor couldn’t leave her mind. It feels like he’s been really preoccupied with the upcoming gala and his work or maybe it’s not that. Maybe he’s lost interest in her. Maybe he got bored with her and no longer needed her company.

What if he throws her away the next time he sees her? What if he tells her that her company is no longer needed? He already paid for her mother’s surgery but why is she still worried about Thor pushing her away? If Y/N was the same person she was a few weeks ago, she wouldn’t be unnerved by Thor’s dismissiveness. She would be thankful that she could have more time for her classes and more time to visit her mother. But that’s not her now. She shamefully developed feelings for the older guy. He made her feel so safe and adored the first few days and she loved it. She loved how he made her feel. But maybe she was just acting like a high school girl with a silly crush. Maybe she should get her head out of the gutter. Thor said it himself. She was his companion. She was meant to accompany him in exchange for money. She’s nothing more than a paid worker.

Y/N’s heart began to beat rapidly when the car skidded to a halt in front of the mansion. She would have to face him. She made a plan to avoid him as much as possible when she’s not needed by him so she can prolong the inevitable. So she can prevent him from firing her. That plan was thrown out the window when Darcy started dragging her towards his office though.

Y/N stared daggers at her white sneakers as Darcy talked to Thor who was unsurprisingly still busy with his paperwork. “How long have you been going through those papers?” Darcy all but whined. Thor hummed boringly and muttered a reply. “Not too long.” “My ass! We left you like this, stayed in the mall for the whole day, came back at dawn and you’re still seated on that chair.” Darcy’s discomfort was palpable yet Y/N remained rooted on her spot, all her attention still on her white sneakers. Thor yet again hummed in reply, seeming uninterested. Y/N felt uncomfortable being in the presence of the two older adults who seem to be in conflict- more on Darcy’s side if Y/N was being honest.

Not being able to handle the tension, Y/N slowly reached for Darcy’s shoulder, tapping it softly. “I think I’ll head over to bed now, Darcy. Goodnight” Y/N whispered and started making her way out, moving as ghostly as possible. Y/N was stopped by Darcy’s grip on her upper arm yet she wasn’t looking at her, she was glaring at Thor. Y/N couldn’t do anything but gulp at the situation, eyes widening when Darcy shouted at him. “For fuck’s sake, Thor! Can you just pay attention for one second?!” Y/N could hear Thor placing his pen down on the table and the screeching of his chair against the floor.

“What is so important that you have to interrupt me from doing my work, Darcy?” his voice was calm but there’s a hint of darkness and annoyance in his voice that has Y/N crying internally at Darcy’s defiance.

“I’d be more than willing to tell you but first, little Y/N here is about to head over to bed. Why don’t you show her some attention and quit being an ass. Just a tiny bit of attention.” Darcy’s tone was harsh but all Y/N could think about was how confusing her words are. How confusing the whole situation is. Trying to ease the tension, Y/N tucked a small piece of hair behind her ear and glanced up at Thor from her sneakers. His attention was now towards her, eyes slightly wider than usual. Smiling ever so slightly, her soft voice broke the hostile atmosphere. “It’s fine, really. It’s pretty late. I’ll just be heading to my room now. Goodnight Mr. Odinson.” She watched as Thor’s eyebrows twitch ever so slightly. She then turned towards Darcy with the same smile, “Goodnight Darcy. Today was fun.” and with that, she shyly walked out of the office without any interruption.

Y/N sighed in relief when she entered the comfort of her room. That was intense for her. It was also weird. She noticed the unspoken conflict between Darcy and Thor but she didn’t think much about it. She didn’t have the right to. She was just another employee. She doesn’t have the right to meddle. Sighing, she walks over to the side of her bed, getting ready to unzip her dress when a knock came from the door.

“Little one?”

Oh gosh. This is it. He’s going to fire me! Y/N paced back and forth, contemplating if she should open the door or just pretend to already be asleep.

“Please open the door, little one” the desperation and sadness in his voice forced her to walk towards the door and open it. Looking up at Thor, Y/N forced a smile and took a deep breath. “Hi” she squeaked out. Thor frowned at her ever so slightly but her heart whimpered when she noticed it. Here it comes.

“Wha-?”

“I’m sorry that I’ve been distant, little one. I hope you didn’t feel neglected while I was busy with my job…” he spoke as he cradled her face.

“I’m sorry-” Y/N tried to apologize but Thor cut her off.

“You’re upset with me, little one. It’s alright to be upset. I’ve been a useless fellow for the past few days.” he looked down, voice hoarse and sad.

“No! Really, Mr. Thor. It’s fine. You’re not a useless fellow-”

“Let me make it up to you. Please, little one. Let me please you.” He looked up and held her face with both of his enormous hands. “Do me a favor and let me please you.”

“W-what do you mean?” Y/N breathed out, shoulders moving along with her deep breaths.

“Let me make it up to you, little one. Please allow me to make you feel good. Allow me to make it up to you.” Thor was begging Y/N for something she couldn’t quite understand. What did he mean by pleasing her? What does make it up to her mean?

“I don’t understand” Y/N whispered as she held Thor’s hands that encased her face.

I WATCHED GOOD OMENS IN FRENCH SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO

and it wasn’t that bad. Here are my thoughts, barely edited as I wrote most of them while watching the show.

EP 1

OK i like god’s voice so far

gender neutral doesn’t ‘quite’ exist in french but pollution has been assigned a female voice actress and masculine pronouns (i’m saying it doesn’t quite exist because officially we have no gender neutral, but it’s a serious wip among lgbt+ circles to the point where it’s started being used in a few medias)

to get a wiggle on has become « il faut qu’on se remue les fesses », literally « we need to shake our butts » like, yes, se remuer les fesses is a common expression to say « we need to act in order to get things done » but it really casts the image of people shaking their booty to some music and obviously crowley thinks the same Weirdly enough I have almost nothing to say for that episode. Sorry. But we’ve discovered most voice actors and actresses so far and no bit of dialogue really struck me as worth discussing or pointing fingers to mock it.

EP 6

« on va BROUTER quelques derrières » - « we’re gonna lick some butts » OK THIS IS UNQUESTIONNABLY FAR SUPERIOR IN FRENCH THAN IN ENGLISH you thought LICKING butts was good ??? you really thought that ???? AZIRAPHALE HERE SUGGESTS TO GRAZE BUTTS. TO NIBBLE THEM. TO EAT THEM. TO. MUNCH. ON. THOSE. BUTTS!!!! not just licking, guys. This is as serious step beyond licking. (oh yeah he should have said « botter » instead of brouter btw, which is really just kicking, fyi)

« moi je crois en la paix, pétasse ! » wow, language, pepper (fyi i think « pétasse » is far far worse than « bitch » even if it means roughly the same, pétasse is almost never used while bitch is rather common, so it’s a swear word +++)

I can confirm that Crowley offers Aziraphale to not just stay at his place, but to move in with him. « tu peux t’installer chez moi si tu veux ». omg they were roommates.

Bad translation strikes again : i don’t know why, but the french dub doesn’t have the « tickety-boo » / « ça gaze » being referenced as Rampa / Aziraphale is being knocked down, which is… a real mistep. It was narratively significant and I’m quite mad the translators missed it.

The Jesse James explanation from Newt has become very nonsensical, instead of the neat and to the point pun « wherever I go I hold up trafic » we’re getting a circonvoluted « because it’s a crime to mechanic’s diligence ». I’m not judging that one too hard, I have no idea how to make it better, and that’s probably how it was translated in the book as well thirty years ago, but it definitely doesn’t have the same impact. On the other hand, it definitely IS a very bad joke that doesn’t even deserve a chuckle, so Anathema’s embarassement really matches the audience’s (aka mine).

OVERALL :

I wasn’t convinced by Crowley… I mean, Rampa’s voice at first, but as the nerdiness showed up it really grew on me. I still think that french dubs have often problems with some voice inflexions every here and there, and for instance in Rampa’s case it was when he was annoyed or frustrated ( at the Globe when complaining about horses and Shakespeare’s plays that aren’t comedies, and also when discussing Azirphale’s magic tricks, it’s like… there is a step between having the right amount of grumpy complaining and overdoing it that is overlooked. It’s overacted, it should have been a bit quieter imo. I don’t mean to criticize voice actors too hard either but as an audience watching french dubs this is a very recurring problem and it always feels off to me. It’s actually one of the main reasons I avoid french dubs whenever possible.)

I have a hard time judging Aziraphale’s voice dub because it clashes so much with both the idea I had formed with it when I read the book and Sheen’s delivery that I just… kinda filtered it. It was too high pitched for me, and too anxious (though for this last point I must admit it could be funny at times, but I’m not fond of this character portrayal). The rest of the cast was rather good, nothing to complain about. There wasn’t anything stellar either, but everything that needed to be conveyed was and it was professionnal. It was also very homogeneous, no voice really struck me as being way too bad or way too good compared to the others, so it was really consistant.

So I don’t have much to complain about overall despite a few wonky translations here and there, BUT there is one thing I felt very robbed of : Crowley calling Aziraphale « mon ange » happens only once, when giving a lift to Anathema, and I’m almost certain they translated it that way because otherwise the joke about Anathama mistaking them for a couple wouldn’t work. So, they were forced to make it that way. The rest of the time Crowley calls Aziraphale « l’angelot », and despite being literally translated by « little angel », it feels sarcastic more than anything else ( the « L’ » in front of « angelot » is part of the reason why, it creates some distance, the other reason being that this word in itself has a very corny vibe and people being affectionnate to each other wouldn’t use it as a term of endearment). So, that’s a shame.

I like the English dub much much MUCH better than the French, but the french wasn’t nearly as bad as I was expecting it to be. The voice actors and actresses were quite good, the dialogues mostly faithful and endearing despite a few really missed steps. It really had its moments. Props to brouter des derrières, that one was fantastic.

i (re)read some of your annie fics today and she really is one of the best aot characters, i can’t believe i didn’t care about her at first. i thought she was so cold (partly because of the dub version of my country) and before knowing more about her and how marley works i really was mad at her for killing all these people but context is very important in her story. anyways i read your post rumbling headcanons and it’s so SOFT, annie really deserves it after everything she had to go through, especially since she thought she was gonna die at a really young age, she can fully enjoy her life now. i am also a big supporter of lesbian annie, i don’t like her with men and annie x armin makes me uncomfortable for some reason, people ship it because armin kept visiting her when she was in her crystal but it was him being obsessed while she couldn’t do anything and i don’t really see how it’s supposed to be romantic? so yeah i really don’t like that ship but if i have to be honest i don’t really like either of armin, eren or mikasa. all the side characters are so great and so interesting that the main ones can seem boring at times.

i’ve also read the great hair massacre of 857 and please it was so sweet and funny!! the whole conversation was already funny but then “There you go saying that gay shit again…” actually made me laugh out loud askljldfijdf. the dialogue in this fic was really great, it seemed so natural!! i really love seeing that side of annie, thank you for blessing us with that content! she was so in character too, the reference to her relationship with her dad was subtle but very welcomed, her tearing up after saying “i left” made my heart clench, her relationship with her father is very complex and you wrote it well!

after reading i got curious and wanted to see annie with actual bangs (apart from that flashback we got in season 4) and i couldn’t find anything, i really wish i could draw rn. oh and both the headcanons and the fic being in canon made me so happy too!! i know i’ve already said it but it’s so rare reading aot stuff in canon i really cherish canon fics when i find them! (that being said, I absolutely love your AUs, i guess i’m just a big fan of your writing!!)

annie kinda feels underrated sometimes which is weird because she seems present in a lot of fics and fanart but she doesn’t seem to have that many fans? especially compared to some others. she 100% deserves more love.

pppffft i was in the opposite situation - i loved her before i knew shit about her character and then felt like a traitor when i pieced together who she was and what she had done.... not sure when you got into snk but i watched season 1 the year it came out and kept up with it so i've really felt every cliffhanger in my bones. i started reading the manga after season 2 aired. my point is that i loved her through Annie all along with her flaws from the beginning, and i've never thought she was "good" per se but it's also obvious that she's affected by what she's done. i always figured there was more to her story than we knew; her reactions, the way she cries over the dead, and the fact that she gives up on her mission that's literally her purpose in life all indicate remorse beyond just regretting being caught. even way back in the day i was like: SHE DOES NOT WANT TO BE DOING THIS!! IM TELLING YOU! my brother would constantly be telling me to shut up slksajdfkj but in the end i was right! i just didn't realize that pretty much ALL of the warriors didn't want to be doing what they did, or how complex it all was. she really does deserve a peaceful life being able to do what she wants. i used to cry about her having to die at age 24 a lot, so the ending taking away the titan curse is just about the only part of the ending i vibe with.

yep, same. i absolutely despise that ship-that-must-not-be-named, in my opinion it's a disgrace for both of their characters, but especially hers. it's really creepy, i agree. i don't blame Annie, being in a crystal with only annoying ass people talking to you for 4 years just left her a little confused. armin is gay anyway, i literally just block ppl who post about the ship. i love Mikasa but the other two i agree are pretty crap characters overall.

heheh well there are the manga caps from 139 but it'll be a while before we have her bangs animated. i'm actually so proud of how the great hair massacre turned out, it was such a sweet and goofy story that shows the lighter part of Annie's personality. eee thank you as always and i'm especially happy you mentioned the dialogue! and how it felt natural, that's such a reassuring compliment ❤ and for the bit about her dad. i feel like i'm the only person who likes him alkjdfalksjd i know he's an asshole and he messed up bad but he does really care about Annie and he's important to her therefore her is important to me. can u tell that i have parents-in-law?

i agree! a lot of people seem to either have the attitude of "o yea she's pretty cool i guess" or the full on EVIL MALICIOUS BITCH!! SHE KILLED LEVI SQUAD REMEMBER THE YOYO! i will eternally point out the hypocrisy - Reiner and Zeke do just as bad and worse as she does but the fandom doesn't hate on them. whatever, i'm happy in my bubble over here!

March 5, 2021: The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (Review)

Well, shit. That’s another 98%.

I’M NOT TRYING TO DO THIS! It’s just...this one’s also really good, and I can’t find any significant flaws in it! Except for...well, one. And it’s...the same one as Spirited Away BUT SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT!

Look, I’ll go into ore detail this time, but I really didn’t think Spirited Away was going to be matched, and...well, it was. Because this movie is stellar. It’s gorgeous, it’s tragic, it’s fantastic fantasy, and it’s genuinely just a very good movie. But I do have a little more to say this time.

Starting with the original story. You gotta go back to the 800s for this one. No missing 1 there, I’m talking the 9th century! The original story is a little different than the movie’s version, but it plays it mostly straight. The bamboo-cutter isn’t quite as gung-ho about the whole “royalty” thing, and her growth is actually faster in the original story.

Most of the other beats are the same, although some minute things differ. She actually becomes friends with the Emperor, although she definitely doesn’t get together with him. But there is a MAJOR omission in this adaptation: the elixir of immortality.

Remember that anime I was talking about, Kaguya-sama: Love is War? It has an episode where this story specifically is brought up, and the elixir of immortality is a major feature of it. See, the Elixir is actually what one needs to survive on the Moon, and the mortal Kaguya drinks it once the Celestial Parade comes to take her back. She sends some of it to the Emperor with a letter before she puts on the forget-me-robe, and then she leaves.

That’s where the movie ends, and I think that’s an amazing place for it to end, but the original story continues. Kaguya’s earthly parents become ill, and the Emperor is given the letter and elixir. In his sorrow, the dumbass writes her a letter and elixir and has his men BURN it on the highest mountaintop, sending his message to the princess. The smoke from that fire was ever-burning and immortal, and the mountain was renamed as “The Immortal Mountain”, or...

Yeah! It’s Mount Fuji! Neat, huh? Anyway, I called the Emperor a dumbass for burning the Elixir. He did it because he didn’t want to live forever without her, but DUDE! Maybe she would’ve COME BACK FOR YOU ONE DAY! But now, she’s gonna live forever, and you’re dead as shit. Buddy...think these things through.

So, yeah, that’s the difference between the two, and I actually quite like the movie’s version. Didn’t need the extra stuff with the elixir, because this didn’t need to be a love story. Instead, it’s a story that celebrates human life and life on Earth, as Kaguya’s last speech outright says. And yeah, that’s kinda beautiful. Hell, why do you think the backgrounds are so lush in this movie? Because it’s not just about Kaguya...it’s about life on Earth.

So, with that, let’s get into the Review, huh? This movie was fantastic, and I do think it deserves a Review in full. Check out all three parts of the Recap here, here, and here!

Review

Cast and Acting: 9/10

James Caan was...not the best choice for Miyatsuki in the dub. He really clashes with the rest of the cast for me, and with the setting as well. But he’s the only performance that I’d consider bad. Not even bad, just ill-fitting! Put simply, it’s only really OK, when it isn’t outright jarring. But everybody else? Fantastic. Mary Steenburgen is arguably the best of the cast, pulling double-duty as Narrator and Mom, and that’s to say nothing bad about Chloe Grace Moretz as the Princess herself! Darren Criss, Lucy Liu, Hynden Walch, James Marsden, even Geaorge Segal and Dean Cain all do a pretty good job! I mean...fuck Dan Cain, but he did OK here.

And yeah, this is the dub cast, because I unfortunately didn’t have access to the sub. But are they good? Yeah, they’re still good. Ghibli has good dubs, what can I tell ya? Except for James Caan. That wasn’t the best choice.

Plot and Writing: 10/10

It’s fantastic. Not only is it a great adaptation of the original story, but it’s a great interpretation of it as well! It takes the original story, but gives it a new meaning as compared to the original story, and builds the screenplay from there! It’s...it’s genuinely one of the best adaptations I’ve ever seen of a story from classic mythology and folklore. Credit to Isao Takahata and Riko Sakaguchi, because they did a stellar job with this adaptation.

Can we...can we do this for other mythologies, please? I want a Paul Bunyan movie that’s actually about the value of natural wonders, or a Hercules movie about the nature of immortality through deeds, or true forgiveness for one’s actions, or...I just need more adaptations like this! This film made me want to see a change in film, and it helped to change my tastes a bit as well. And really...what better compliment can a film be given?

Directing and Cinematography: 10/10

Isao Takahata was one of Hayao Miyazaki’s contemporaries, and it FUCKING SHOWS. As does the cinematography skill of Keisuke Nakamura, because this film is...wonderful. I don’t really have anything to say. It’s just an amazingly storyboarded film. And once again, that’s closely linked to...

Production and Art Design: 10/10

The artistry is unparalleled in a lot of ways, but not specifically because of skill and detail. No, it’s the stylization of the film that sets it apart, and it’s gorgeous. Japan’s art is best known worldwide from the period of minimalist watercolor paintings they produced, and that period is well-replicated and represented in this...just genuinely gorgeous movie. The art director is Kazuo Oga, and he’s apparently, like...amazing? He’s worked on a BUTT-ton of great looking films, including many of the Ghibli films. His experience shows, even though has bee his last film he’s worked on in that capacity, so far. Which is a shame, because...I mean, come on. It’s amazing.

Music and Editing: 10/10

Joe Hisaishi. Yup. Kiki’s, Spirited Away, and this movie. He’s a goddamn musical prince, and it’s gorgeous. Not a lofi mix this time, but definitely some good background music for your life. It’s just beautiful, and I can’t recommend this music enough.

And the editing? Toshihiko Kojima is fantastic as well, and the sound and visual editing is essentially flawless here. I just...THIS MOVIE IS SO GOOD YOU GUYS

I know, a 98% twice in a row is ridiculous...but...

Can you blame me? This movie is fantastic, and basically flawless. I’ve said all I can say about it. Well, other than to say that you need to see this movie if you haven’t already. And NOW I don’t think I’m topping this one. Watch me say that, and then the next movie’s also gonna be amazing.

Well, I’ll tempt fate. What are the odds, right? Right? Just to test that, I’m leaving Japan finally. But, that doesn’t mean I have to leave animation, right?
