The Ink Demonth 2023 - Day 12. Angel
Tumblr media
Day 12. Angel Crossover: W.I.T.C.H. (comics) This could be true, if it weren't for the fact that Joey is probably canonically gay (but I'm not sure if it's a fact).
And now a bit of history. Comics W.I.T.C.H. in Poland were published for about ten years from 2002 and were extremely important to me. I bought this newspaper from the first to the last issue - I skipped maybe 3-4 issues when I was on vacation and couldn't find a shop that had the current press (I'll fill these holes someday). For me, this series was extremely important and played a big role for many reasons - firstly, it was how I learned to draw human figures and my style still somewhat resembles the style of W.I.T.C.H. Secondly - reading this comic coincided with the moment when I first started to suffer from depression and reading about magic, about friendship that works and that friends don't stab you in the back - made it easier for me to cope with reality. Finally, thirdly - I was then very into magic and I was looking for it in a more interesting form than the one presented in Harry Potter (where magic, by the way, is very boring and monothematic). In each issue, apart from the next part of the comics, there were interesting horoscopes from different parts of the world, methods of fortune telling and interesting facts about various magical things. This was the beginning of my collection of myths, spells, creatures and magical plants. But then the comic stopped being published, and then that nasty French series came out, which is one big abomination - and I completely forgot about W.I.T.C.H. for many, many years... But then, some time ago, my dad, who was cleaning out my old room (where he has his "office"), found a huge pile of my magazines and decided to bring them to me - among them were all my issues of W.I.T.C.H. magazine. When my daughter saw it, she was immediately delighted and asked if I could read it to her. Reading comics is difficult and unattractive to the listener, so I thought she would get boring quickly - but no... we're halfway through the first saga (about Merdian) and Ursa keeps asking for more. And when I read it to her, I take a sentimental journey back to my childhood, I'm moved again by the stories, I laugh at the jokes, I discover that I look at the characters differently, but like them the same, although for completely different things.
That's why I decided to include such an important element that made me who I am now in this year's Ink Demonth - and the slogan Angel seemed more than appropriate. Interestingly, the previous entry also fit here, and in order to include the Phantom of the Opera, I had to find another place for it, because - yes - it lost to W.I.T.C.H. However, this inconspicuous comic book for teenagers had a greater impact on me, my character, interests and who I am today - than the musical I saw several years ago or the book I read only this year. Sad but true.
I must admit that I had fun drawing and colouring this. And if someone asks: my favourite character is Will - not only because she is redhead and is (like me) a Capricorn, but many threads from her story were similar to mine. This hasn't changed. However, today I look more kindly at Cornelia, whom I once disliked, and a little less favorably at Irma, whom I once liked very much (the way she treats Martin at the beginning is terrible). While drawing them, I realized how unfairly Hay Lin is treated - her guardian outfit is the worst and least highlights her charms. However, after upgrading the outfits, she gains the most, while Cornelia's and Will's outfits are terrible. By the way, Taranee, what did they do to your hair, tell me? By the way, it was even fun to do something similar to the SATIM comic - was this comic always so electric yellow? It was very difficult for me to adapt to this...

Hi I love you. I’ve been carefully waiting for you to update 🤍 but also I do have a question! I noticed that you made Damen a Scorpio, and Laurent a Taurus in NMFY. Was this intentional? Because I saw on capri twt someone made a timeline to show Damen & Lauren’s 6 year age gap, and their most likely birthday. And Damen being a Scorpio and Laurent being a Taurus totally fits 😭🤍 In case it was totally intentional and you wrote it based on the books, you’re absolutely brilliant and I love you more. I wanted to know whether you’re into zodiac and have opinion to their zodiac compatibility pairing
I LOVE THIS AND I LOVE YOU FOR ASKING (also I just updated when I said I was going to lmao, for once!)
Sorry my answer is so long. But here is my essay on Scorpio Damen and Scorpio/Taurus compatibility.
I haven't seen the timeline, so I did it based on the books and then my own opinion of their characters. I'm really into astrology. I'm into spiritualism too and I'm an eclectic neopagan (not that you asked lmao)
Laurent is late spring, so can only really be a Taurus or a Gemini based on the information we're given in the books. And I think Taurus is more Laurent's vibe.
We know they're 20 and 25 during the books which kicks off around June time but by Marlas, which would have been early spring/March Damen was already 19 and Laurent was approaching 14. So Damen's birthday has to be later than September as the books only span 3 months (being generous) but before Spring (battle at marlas).
Then it was just a matter of deciding what I felt vibed best with what we know of them. I toyed with a few for Damen but none of them felt right -Capricorn, Sag, Libra- they just don't fit him very well.
I think Damen fits a Scorpio for so many reasons, mostly because they're incredibly deep but don't really show it. They're charismatic people quite naturally but they can also be ruthless. They're also -like Taurus- extremely loyal.
Scorpio people feel very deeply, they can be great leaders, resourceful, passionate when something is important to them, they love challenges and tend to be fucking fearless when they see obstacles.
You’re probably thinking "but Scorpios are manipulators" and yes. They can be and I would argue that Damen isn’t the kind of person that manipulates on purpose but, as with most scorpio’s, he is charming when he wants to be and often charming people don’t recognise their influence on the people around them. He is also smart and strategic and his manner of looking at things coupled with a natural charisma often influences situations and the people around him without him purposefully thinking let me manipulate this. Manipulation doesn’t always equal sneaky, sometimes it references a natural sway and I think Scorpio is often this kind of person. Especially because they are almost always confident they are right and confidence is everything when you’re influencing a situation or person, whether you know it or not.
Scorpio is often calm and collected. They feel deeply but don’t show it the way you associate with the other water signs. They can be violent when pushed and can be relentless with it, whether it’s a physical fight, a slanging match, or a cause they believe in Scorpio is IMPOSSIBLE to fight with. They keep their heads, they aren’t prone to lashing out or to displays of emotion but they can and will absolutely ruin you if you get them there. If they were a sin I’d say it might be Pride.
We know from Canon Damen is very cool and collected in high stress situations. He compartmentalises to a fault, he doesn’t EVER let his situation get the better of him in terms of his emotions. I am talking explicitly about his ability to keep his shit together when in fight or flight and his decision making ability in high stress situations. And of course his penchant for not letting himself feel the horror and sadness of everything that has happened: Kastor, Jokaste, his dad dying, being stabbed by his brother, the post, Ancel etc.
He feels it very deeply but he doesn’t let it show, he doesn’t let it rule him and he doesn’t acknowledge it pretty much all the way through the books.
Scorpio is deeply self aware (not always emotionally) and there isn’t a single instance in the book where Damen doubts himself. Not even in chains. He doesn’t even really doubt Laurent even when Laurent throws test after test at him. There’s a loyalty and surety there.
In terms of sex and romance scorpio is the sign of sexuality which matches nice with Taurus because they are the sign of sensuality. We know Damen’s only two outlets in terms of his emotions are fighting and fucking. He is a deeply DEEPLY sexual person and he has so much passion in him that he literally walks into the lions den with an I love you and some big fucking balls. Like??? Who else but a scorpio would have the AUDACITY to do that shit?
Prone to one-night stands and expression through their bodies Scorpios will only truly be satisfied when they find the ONE which again -so is Taurus. And when they do they are loyal and passionate and tend to spend their teen years and 20s being fuck-boys and hoes until they realise they want more.
Sound familiar? The second Damen fucks Laurent there is no going back for him because he’s found the person that can satisfy both his intense needs: sex and the emotional intimacy he’d been craving (but ignoring) his whole life.
When Scorpio’s find the one they want the literally merge their lives and hearts and become the power couple WE kind of people.
Intelligent, loyal, strategic, dedicated to the people they care about, they work well under pressure, are focused, resourceful and hardworking. They enjoy the chase; they are competitive and they like a little mystery in their romance. When in love they are unshakeable and loyal and passionate above all else. Their kind of love can be too intense for most people but Taurus WANTS that security and the assurance, Taurus thrives on being the centre of someone’s world and no other zodiac sign will do it quite as well as Scorpio
Taurus and Scorpio have a lot of sexual energy between them and natural compatibility. So I think it makes a lot of sense, Laurent and Damen's chemistry on page is stellar and it is INSTANT.
I think any time I read an enemies to lovers I assume they have birth charts that are compatible because Love and Hate are so closely aligned. Hate is such a passionate sentiment, I don't think it's possible that two people like that don't have some natal compatibility/facets that make for glorious tension.
Anyway, sorry for the ramble and thank you for this because it was so so much fun to word vomit about it haha! 💕💕

Do you mind telling us your opinion on what astrological signs the Blacks are?
Hi there! 🤗
Sorry for this delay and may I say that your ask was so polite! I am almost not used to this!
Omg I love this ask! And can I say I am not an expert on signs but I get curious and binge watch youtube so XD let's do this.
Easiest one first.
Daemon Targaryen - Scorpio. I mean... is there ANY doubt?!
The sign most associated with sex. Dark. Mysterious. Easy to anger and slow to forgive (if ever). Vengeful. Relentless desire for control. Manipulative. Ambitious. Enticing. Someone who almost never opens open and hides away their feelings.
I think Daemon is almost a perfect personification of what a scorpio is hitting all the major points.
BUT I would add that he is a Scorpio with Sagittarius rising as a reader I had who knows MUCH more about signs than I once told me she was sure he had this combo, and that this was the hottest combo for the gentlemen, so yeah. I can see it as Daemon did seem to be fun-loving, party-boy, and outspoken. And the Sagittarius I have met in life do NOT back down from a fight! Imagine someone with this Scorpio-Sagittarius combo in a fight... Yep. That’s Daemon.
Tumblr media
Rhaenyra Targaryen - Taurus. No doubts there.
Very stubborn. Demanding. Prone to anger. They like pleasure and the fine things in life, like to live a comfortable life. Resilient. Devoted to those they love. Jealous and possessive. Like to be pampered.
While Scorpio is the most sexual sign of the zodiac, Taurus is the most sensual sign. And there’s little surprise that these two form one of the most explosive combos of the zodiac, and supposedly they are the hottest of all the zodiac combos. Complementary opposites. I think this pretty much sums up Daemon and Rhaenyra -> very similar in some things and opposites in others.
Tumblr media
Rhaenys Targaryen - it’s actually canon she is a Cancer because we do get her name day. So this just makes my job easier and yes I do think she has many of the Cancer traits. Does not back down from a fight. Cares deeply about family.
Tumblr media
Corlys Velaryon - Leo. I did struggle with what sign I should give the Sea Snake, and for a long time I thought something like Sagittarius because of how adventurous he was, but in the end I think he screams Leo. He’s super charismatic, proud, major main character vibes. I mean it’s said the only woman good enough for him was Rhaenys Targaryen so like...
Corlys:
Tumblr media
Jace “Velaryon” - Sagittarius
We know he was born later in the year so it’s really between Sagittarius and Capricorn. I choose Sagittarius, however, because of how good with people Jace was. He easily inspired loyalty, was charismatic, independent, and took initiative.
Tumblr media
Luke “Velaryon” - Capricorn
He was also born late in the year and him and Jace need at the very least like 10 months between them?! Let me have a year please XD. Please XD for my sanity.
So I was actually torn between Capricorn and Sagittarius with Luke, but his seriousness and how he kept his word instead of beating Aemond -> any proper Sagittarius would have taken him up on his offer of a showdown I think XD like these people do NOT mess around, they are a fire sign - make me say Capricorn.
Joffrey “Velaryon” - Aries
I am going to say Aries because of how hot-tempered and bold he was. He acted first and thought later -> as he did during the storming of the Dragonpit - and showed enormous bravery.
Aegon III Targaryen - Capricorn
Luckily this is canon too so less work for me as we know our God and Saviour was born at the end of the year, like last days. And this is the sign of divine people btw.
Tumblr media
Viserys II - Aquarius
The sign of so many incredibly smart people - I mean Darwin was an Aquarius! Duh! Analytical, detached... plus I love the idea of the best boys being the Ice Kings. Just making others uncomfortable with their silence and then giving them the verbal beatdown of the century. Btw I think this sign would fit Daemon’s boys very well. I mean... imagine taking on a scorpio an Aquarius and a capricorn... it’s like... call the police.
Tumblr media
Baela and Rhaena - Thank GOD these two were twins since this means less work for me XD. Gemini. This is not me just being funny and obvious. I think these two do fit well with being Geminis. They just seem to have a way with people, they exuded energy and positivity wherever they went, and Baela does show she was NOT to be messed with as anyone who knows a Gemini knows it’s better to be on their good side.
Tumblr media
That’s all! ☺️ and again sorry for my delay!

for the ask thing: taissa for taissa Tuesday!!!
first impression: like i said i will have the hardest time with this one because i watched it when s1 was airing and i have goldfish memory. but i remember thinking she's such a capricorn and an ex friend saying something about not liking her in a way that made me just think. well do you like ME cause you just listed my traits lmao oh and i was worried about what they plan to do with her after s1 finale ngl
impression now: this might be a great moment actually to discuss my feelings on s2 tai. i'm so very torn between like. agreeing that they didn't spend enough time on tai and there are issues with how her character is handled this season and.. connecting with tai so much more than ever before. like yes modern timeline tai was very much losing her grasp on her life from the very beginning of the show but she was so deeply in denial about it and was otherwise so successful and in a way that i just can't relate to because - sorry to slightly overshare (but hey what if someone needed to know that) - i dropped out of uni and my life very much didn't and isn't ever going how i planned it so i sometimes avoid characters like this because it can ignite a bit of.. shame. i guess. in me. with that out of the way. taissa who is so afraid of falling asleep? who doesn't trust her own self and is afraid of parts of herself? tai who represses to such a degree but can no longer hide it and it's getting out of hand and she's lost and she's reaching for the person who made it better years ago? oh THAT hits
favorite moment: HAPPY WIFE HAPPY LIFE. i mean that's what came to my mind first. the actual favourite moment i think is when she says "we hear the wilderness and it hears us" while shauna is giving birth. i think it's such a beautiful moment and it's so special and devastating and beautiful. like. i saw people call tai selfish and idk maybe i just relate to her too much and i'm just also selfish but i don't see her as selfish. she's a pragmatic and she oftentimes uses cynicism as a shield and she's really opinionated in a way that can be hurtful (like when she talks to van in s1 finale and at first is kind of shitty after van tells her about her near death experience. it's a scene i always cringe at because oh my god i was totally taissa in that moment many times in my life and i very much try not to be but yea it's kind of insensitive and kind of a know-it-all behavior and it's a character flaw that is so good i love you taissa) but like she is so protective and such a leader and she loves so fiercely when she lets herself and nothing devastates me more than thinking of her so scared for shauna's wellbeing that she's willing to do anything and pray to anyone who might be listening
idea for a story: oh i have one i am not sharing. only jas @lesbiantahani knows about that one because i'm still delusional and convinced i will write it eventually. anyway it's a wilderness tai pov thing is all i will say
unpopular opinion: idk if i have any? can't think of anything that i think is Unpopular necessarily
favorite relationship: VANTAI oh my god. i remember exactly when i decided oh i Love them when i first watched the show and it was doomcoming with tai making masks for them both to wear. i think depending on how they handle both their characters in the next seasons it could be one of my favorite canon wlw relationships really. because they are both such interesting characters in their own right which.. doesn't happen often tbh like i very rarely find both characters in a canon lesbian ship interesting enough SEPARATELY. like yes their dynamic is amazing but they'd be just as interesting if they weren't together because. how do i put it. their complexity as characters doesn't rely on each other? which i think last time i even said was about root and shaw
favorite headcanon: that tai was there for shauna when shauna was giving birth to callie <3

Did I just spend way too much time trying to "scientifically" determine the ranking of my favorite AM albums - even though I'm canonically terrible at math (proven fact) and hate it? Yes. Yes I did.
Because next to being a purely artistic, humanities-focused right-brained person I am also a Capricorn. And earth sign. Obsessed with lists and rankings and determining things as objectively as possible. Even when it's impossible.
(Anyway - my podium is apparently TBHC, WPSIATWIN [a little surprise] and The Car very closely followed by SIAS)
Which actually does make sense when I think it through.
(Anyway - I still love all of the children very much).

i'm rereading always be my baby and i saw your chapter notes for chapter 12 and yes! i do not accept any other sun sign for jackie, she's such a fucking libra? idk what the creators were smoking when they said she'd be a fucking scorpio. if anything, she'd probably be scorpio moon. also maybe leo rising.
that being said, i'm wondering what you think the other girls' sun signs (plus more if you have opinions) are? i have a few opinions but none i feel as sure of as jackie being a libra sun.
(oh and the you're just a bee charmer update was great!!! your fics are amazing and part of the reason why i'm so into jackieshauna 🫶)
Aw thank you!!!
Oh god you’re getting me to wade into the astrology take territory that I have avoided publicly dipping a toe in because I feel INSANE to an unhealthy degree when people have wildly different takes than I can fathom (also when people clearly project their own signs onto their favorite characters lmao) so DISCLAIMER if you disagree that’s great but idc lol I am an ASTROLOGY GIRLIE I have THOUGHT ABOUT THIS you will not convince me otherwise make your own post don’t let this turn into a debate platform pls okay? I beg lol. ALSO IDC ABOUT CANON SIGNS I DONT IT MEANS NEXT TO NOTHING TO ME and I’ve already heard all the canon birthdates and opinions of the showrunners and actors I promise!! The placements that feel iffy or changeable with more input (aka future seasons) to me are italic, I don’t have a placement for everyone’s full big three and characters introduced in s2 have not yet sat in my mind long enough lol and jackie and shauna are my most ride or die takes
Jackie libra sun / cancer moon / gemini rising
Shauna capricorn sun / sagittarius moon / scorpio rising
Taissa scorpio sun / capricorn moon / aries rising
Van leo sun / libra moon (van got iffy for me s2)
Natalie sagittarius sun / cancer moon
Lottie pisces sun / aquarius moon / libra rising
Misty cancer sun / gemini moon / capricorn rising
Laura Lee aquarius sun / aries moon / taurus rising
Mari gemini sun / taurus moon
Akilah virgo sun / pisces moon
Callie sagittarius sun
Travis pisces sun
Ben libra sun

Story details !!
Take 2 . smh. this one is super long so we’ll keep the additional things under the cut !!
The Magic School Jeep takes place a little over a decade after the original events of Ride the Cyclone. It follows the story of Savannah and five other strangers who just so happened to be in the same tragic road accident. Post-revival, Savannah still has ghosts of the past (and the present) haunting her. How will she deal with going from feeling as if she knows nothing, to suddenly feeling like she knows too much?
We’re also given the chance to explore the eventful lives and interpersonal issues of a whole new cast of characters, each carrying their own form of emotional baggage.
Join them on a jeepney journey through space as they recount their lives through detailed flashbacks, touching heart-to-hearts, and a healthy-ish amount of trauma dumping. <3
By the end, they’re faced with the same dilemma. Who do they bring back?
What will they do once presented with this decision? Why does it feel like there’s something (or someone) watching and waiting in the wings? How does this game of life and death really work? Is it worth it, in the end?
All these questions we hope to answer in a story about acceptance and healing, with a dash of humor and a sprinkling of queerness (as all narratives should have) (it's. way more than a sprinkling tbh. it's like a whole truckload of queerness). Thank you for indulging us in this already extremely self-indulgent story! We are cringe, but we are free.
additional notes!
there are different ways / iterations of the life games across time. this is important !!
even though this story is built off the events of ride the cyclone, we of course will NOT be maintagging any of these posts as rtc or ride the cyclone for obvious reasons
we view jane doe, savannah, and penny lamb as separate (but interconnected) individuals. this is for the sake of avoiding confusion.
yes, they are in a filipino jeepney. yes, this story is still set in Uranium City, Saskatchewan which is canonically located in Canada. How does this make any modicum of sense? Good question. Anyways.

Favorite keepsake from when you were alive?
Ah. Yes, I had my dollies. They sit above my bed and they all have names. Sometimes the names feel... familiar, but I lose my string of thought before I can figure out how.
Favorite musical?
It's been a while since I've listened to a musical, or music in general, but Phantom of the Opera is lovely.
What helps you sleep at night?
Uh, I don't get as much sleep as I used to, unfortunately. I know that doesn't answer the question, sorry.

Uh. Well... there's these, I guess. Butterfly earrings. They're really old. I painted them years ago. The very few who talked to me asked where I got them... I never came up with an answer.
Favorite musical?
... I am not proud of this answer but it's Be More Chill.
Can ghosts be gay?
Like the song? I'm gay and kind of a ghost, so... yeah, I guess?

Do I really have to answer this? Fine. I still carry an old pick around in the back of my phone. It's kinda funny cuz it's not even mine. I borrowed it from. Someone. A long time ago. Shit hit the fan before I thought to return it. It's a little scuffed now but, I don't know, I never bothered getting rid of it.
Favorite musical?
I don't LIKE musicals >:( ... Jesus Christ Superstar
First song you learned on the guitar?
There's this song, uh, Good Kid? It's pretty easy to play. I think that was the first. I don't know where it's from though. (Voice offscreen: Hey, you know that's from a musical, right?) ... FUCK OFF.

I remember this one time I went downtown to buy a bottle of booze. I didn't really mean to, it was a-... spur of the moment thing, you know? Not like it mattered anyway since drinking laws in this shithole are stupid. I was going to save it for the day of my 19th but. I suppose that's out of the question now, hm?
(yes i know that's wine next to them in the pic shhhh - pastaboy)
Favourite musical?
Coldplay. (That's just... not a musical.) Is it not? They make music, don't they? (... well. yes. but-)
Do you get a lot of comments on your accent?
[Sigh] Unfortunately yeah. It gets a wee bit annoying at times, especially if people are being weird. Though once in a while it earns a laugh, so if it's funny I'll put up with it.

Oh! Well, I don't know if this is a keepsake? But ever since I was around seven, I've carried around this little tote bag. It has all the essentials— water, first aid, stuff like that. It was pretty much a necessity back then since my younger siblings were always getting into some kind of trouble. My parents weren't always present either, with their work and other things so, I've just hanged onto it and haven't really stopped.
Favorite musical?
Do Disney movies count? (On a technicality, I suppose they have to. Any specific favorite?) Oh, I don't know, there are a lot of good ones. Um, Tangled? If I had to pick. (... Alright. At least it's not Coldplay-) Wait, who said Coldplay? (Ascot.) Awwh, of course they would. :)

... I don't like this question. But since I'm being forced to answer; I have this pen I received as a birthday present when I was 10. I still keep it in my pocket as a good luck charm and for— memories, I guess. It doesn’t even write anymore, it ran out of ink years ago. Nevermind, it’s stupid. I should throw it away.
Favorite musical?
I saw a local production of Lés Miserables when I was a kid. I can’t recall much but I know I enjoyed it. I don’t have time to see many musicals nowadays.
Favorite bone in the human body?
??? This one is just strange. Of all the medical questions you could’ve asked, why this one? Nevermind. If I absolutely had to pick, I’d say the... pelvis? It’s a rather important bone. I don’t know if that qualifies as a favourite but I’m not sure how else to answer.

2 and 12 for the writer’s asks, please!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE ASK!!!! <3
2. has a comment someone left on a fic of yours ever made you cry?
Yes. I am a crier. Here are some times I cried:
The first time I ever got a comment (@csmicletters )
The first time I saw someone recommend TTIS on facebook (not really a comment but I genuinely cried and I still have the post screenshotted.)
When TTIS got 10,000 hits.
I hit the wall with writing TTIS more than once. It was publishing live, in line with the new episodes, over ten weeks, meaning I was writing (quickly does the maths) a little under 20k words per week on average. Trying to write that much, that fast, was a stupidly huge undertaking, and there's only one thing that made it happen. The fucking comments. Here's one that still makes me kinda tear up to this day.
Tumblr media
I don't know who this is, but I bawled at this one.
I know who a lot of my regular commenters are (Except Clara - if you're out there, you make my day every fricking time you comment!) but this one was like, basically an anon. And it killed me. It was so early on in TTIS, when it still only had fewer than about 500 hits. But this was so validating. It made me feel like I was actually making something that was worthwhile, and that people did genuinely want to read it. They weren't just reading it because they were my friends or they were being nice.

Tag Game To Better Know You! Send this to people you’d like to know better!
Thank you @fizzycherrycola and @hetagrammy for tagging me <3
What book are you currently reading?
Currently, and very slowly, making my way through How to be a Victorian. I haven't had a lot of free time to be able to read as much as would want to this year. I hope next year when I change my job, I'll find something that gives me more time to do so.
What’s your favourite movie you saw in theatres this year?
I'm like, trying to reach back in my mind all the movies I've seen this year in theaters. The Menu was a really fun watch for the most recent thing I watched. Bullet Train was also a ride, pun intended. I'm trying to remember what I watched in theaters versus at home and honestly, I think I watched a lot of movies that were released this year at home.
What do you usually wear?
In warm or hot weather, t-shirt, cargo shorts and flip flops. In cold weather, loose cut jeans, t-shirt, flannel, hoodie, and either converse or boots.
How tall are you?
As tall as Arthur's canon height.
What’s your Star Sign? Do you share a birthday with a celebrity or a historical event?
Capricorn and I share a birthday with the day the Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812
Do you go by your name or a nick-name?
Irl I go by my real name but everywhere online I go by Ace
Did you grow up to become what you wanted to be when you were a child?
Nope :) I wanted to either be a marine biologist or an author. I'm a 5th-grade teacher and my life has been in constant stress and pain since.
Are you in a relationship? If not, who is your crush if you have one?
Yes, I am happily married 💗
What’s something you’re good at vs. something you’re bad at?
What am I good at: retrieving information and remembering trivial knowledge, writing, making quick and stupid memes, singing, and point-and-click adventure games
What I'm bad at: cooking, effectively communicating my feelings and wants and needs, any sort of physical activity, drawing, knowing any brand or type of car like help me, and telling when people are lying
Dogs or cats?
Cats 🐈
If you draw/write, or create in any way, what’s your favourite picture/favourite line/favourite etc. from something you created this year?
Honestly, my favorite piece I've written this year was Come Ashore for Rack and Ruin, like, I feel like the whole piece just came together and felt really good to write. Same with the second chapter of Dreams of Philadelphia. These are my favorite lines from them respectively:
Matthew didn’t fall anywhere special, he didn’t stand out amongst any of the other dead Canadian soldiers that Alistair finally stumbled across. His body lay upright and Alistair risked a precious second to push the lad’s goggles to his forehead to reveal glossed-over, grey-blue eyes staring towards the heavens; maybe the lingering spirit of Matthew could see it a little clearer now. Like everyone, he was covered in gore and mud. Alistair didn’t think the lad could be any quieter than he already was. Silent as a church mouse now quiet as a Catholic grave.
A place Alfred had long associated with life and freedom, one of the birthplaces of who he was reeked of death. Open windows that once lead way to cheerful laughter and freshly made apple butter now let the souls of the dead pass through as well as the stench of decay.
What’s something you would like to create content for?
A dream would be to write something similar to the American Girl books, some good historical fiction for a younger audience to get young readers interested in history but not just for America but for other countries as well.
What’s something you’re currently obsessed with?
Other than Hetalia? Furthering continuing my downfall of being a 2012 tumblr entity by rewatching Doctor Who.
What’s something you were excited about that turned out to be disappointing this year?
Honestly speaking my job. I was really looking forward to working at a school as an assistant and was proud to have been offered a higher position early on. I wanted to do well. I wanted to make a difference. I wanted to help teach these kids. Every step I take feels like a punishment like I made the wrong choice of what I'm doing.
What’s a hidden talent of yours?
Is being good at the Sims count? Like, I'm really good at decorating interiors and making Sims. Where on my resume can I put that I'm good at creating characters as well as aesthetic image boards.
The only thing I've surprised my wife with doing is being really good at handling all sorts of watercraft such as a jetski and kayak.
Are you religious?
Not really, no.
What’s something you wish to have at this moment?
An electric blanket, hot coffee, and a new pair of slippers. You cannot put a Californian in weather below 50 degrees.
I’m going to tag some folks to do this if they so wish: @the-phoenix-heart @the-aph-circus @senditothemoonn @myrddin-wylt @crumpled--notes

any yall seen ted lasso?
I just finished it (yes i am 2 years late to the party) and i have Thoughts about their zodiac signs i need to discuss.
Kinda spoilers I guess under the cut. Not getting too specific but. warned.
1) Ted
Gut instinct? Gemini. Lile genuinely does talk that much. Also really great at meeting people where they are and building connections.
On the other hand, does have a very specific and maintained personality. Cancer maybe? Instinct to form family, but idk if cancer would be accepting enough....Taurus? Is pretty affable and persistent and does seem to like people and a routine and the manner of charming is pretty in your face effective...Sag would move across the world and talk that much, but i dont think the moving should count and idk if he holds opinions strongly enough...oh maybe he does....
2) Coach Beard
Aquarius. Will not forgive them for 45 minutes of nothing learned. Like could be a Leo or whatever but man's an Aquarius.
3) Rebecca
3 options i think...Capricorn, Leo Woman, Scorpio
Capricorn - Boss (obv) but will indulge in sweets, and loves to party and be in control (of appearence, situation, etc)
Scorpio - Vindictive and sexy. Shes actually pretty sensitve...and perceptive interpersonally...A scorpio would take their revenge to these extremes...
Leo - Magnetic, is the lion etc. i think leos have more friends/mystery though
4) Keeley
See, I could say Leo because Lion motif, but I dont actually think shes a full leo..like it would suit her and shes confident enough, but....idk. The little period of time where EVERYONE is like I Love You Keeley is actually what set this off because i was like, holy shit is Keeley a Taurus? I could see aries with the effortless cool independence or libra for the (people pleasing?) too....
5) Nate
Regretfully I think Nate might be a Pisces Man. The sensitivity and pivot to immediate powertrip and neediness guilt retribution storm? like definetely is a little bitchy water sign about it if not pisces. just the like, genuinely good perception and subsequent delusions is just so pisces to me...like yeah you are the victim in your made up scenario you built. i guess could also be a scorpio man or cancer (or even libra?) but like.
6) Roy
hm. tough. which sign just shuts the fuck up but also curses you out? Aries maybe. Mad about other people not doing a good job. Virgo or Cancer maybe. Wiki says Gemini? Where are they getting these birthdays.
7) Leslie
Hm. Fairly unconcerned with one-upmanship. Not fire. Content with personal mysteries, but not deeply mysterious like some signs. Does not need to have it his way. Genuinely good at job. Virgo or Libra maybe? Perhaps another pisces.
8) Dr Fieldstone
Capricorn or Cancer. No one holds others at arms length or feels as deeply. Maybe Scorpio Virgo or Aquarius but none of those strike me as strongly.
9) Sam Obisanya
Optimistic and principled...says Sagittarius to me. Ah. Wiki informs me that has a canonical early January Capricorn birthday. Eh. I guess. What if Im right
10) Trent Crimm
Hm. Aq comes naturally, but Virgo or Leo could also suit. Aries would be as incisive but dont think an aries would go about breaking down barriers as methodically.
What do yall think?

Consumed by thoughts of Evil Morty and Rick Prime in love.
Which is. Well that is literally the most delusional pairing I have.
I mean like.
Well uh. Let's see how about Outlast and what I ship in that. Weddie. At least one half of that ship has an obsessive violent "love" for the other. It's one-sided yeah. But it's full of potential for "what if's" and GUILT. Waylon, the idea of not being able to save Eddie from the insanity that was inflicted haunting him every night. Eddie, the idea of him surviving and all the shit that comes from the guilt of knowing what he did to so many people that night and constantly wondering about the one that got away. A groom who's mind is muddled and twisted and a reluctant bride who sealed his fate. They could have been beautiful together, you know.
And my most recent of 2doc. Stockholm syndrome in a nutshell, basically just an idiot who keeps getting back together with a terrible abusive ex. Murdoc put 2D into that damn coma, but also got him out of it. Damn satanist putting his "blue haired black eyed god" through constant physical and mental agony and yet. 2D still loves him. Even after the events of Plastic Beach and Murdoc being locked up for long enough for 2D to taste freedom from that agony. They still save eachother. They still love eachother. Murdoc has said his favorite colors are blue and green. Blue and goddamn green.
And 15 seasons of Supernatural for- Wincest. Well c'mon man. Literal canonical soulmates who died for eachother countless times. That damn quote about them being irrationally emotionally erotically co-dependent on each other or what the ffuck ever. The vessels of good and evil who go against fate time and time again because they choose each other. Even when they'd be objectively living better lives apart, they wouldn't be happy like that. Because ever since John put baby Sammy in Dean's arms that fateful night and told him to protect him or whatever it has always been the two of them. Sam and Dean. Even in the face of certain doom, it's the two of them. Heaven is an open road for them to drive down.
Homestuck is gay and cringe but y'know what isn't. GamKar. Knight of Blood and Bard of Rage. Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. Moirails made in shite circumstances. Fear and uncertainty and anger and longing. Miraculous blood and insanity. Sopor pies the color of lime the color of what Karkat was mutated from. Tragedy and comedy and red and green swirling together into madness. Mirthful Messiahs and Signless Sufferers and clowns and crabs. Royalty of Prospit. Doomed and retconned timelines leaving us with only crumbs of what could have been. Karkat's purple recuperacoon to go Gamzee's red.
And well. Of course. Rick and Morty. Rick and Morty, forever and forever, a hundred years Rick and Morty! It's Rick and Morty against the everything. Complementary brainwaves be damned y'know, cosmic destiny be damned. That's not even his "real" Rick. But it is. Dimensions left behind and lies upon lies because admitting the truth is emotionally vulnerable but love is shown through actions and they have proven to each other that the love they have is legit. Yes, it's far from perfect, downright toxic at times. But it's strong. It's persistent and true and unbreakable despite their doubts.
But for. *checks nonexistent notes* The ffuck do you mean it's almost 5 AM that's not real. Anyway. Evil Morty wants nothing to do with Ricks of any kind. His main goal has always been escaping that bullshit. And Rick Prime well. He's a ffucking careless psycho. Why does he do the shit he does? Ffuck if I remember. He doesn't give a shit about a Morty and that's obvious. Plus with the events of season 7 y'know. It does not make sense at all. That pairing.
But you know how it is with spaghetti.

capricorn + scaramouche + drabble + canon-compliant
(sorry for the the first ask btw ! accidentally sent it 😣)
oh no (drabble)
penpal: its okay anon ! hope this is to your liking hehe
prompt: capricorn the sea-goat, first-word soulmate au
pairing/s: scaramouche x gn!reader
sypnosis: after a terrible crisis that led other people fall to a deep slumber, you decided to help the honorary knight and his other companions to investigate the meteorites, not knowing that the said crisis will lead you to your soulmate.
include/s: canon-compliant, unreconciled stars event lore
Tumblr media
as one of the senior members of the adventurers' guild, you heard from katheryne that meteorites of unknown origin have turned the lives of people across the land upside down by making those who are near to the meteorites fall into deep slumber. of course, you gladly decided to step in and help your members to find out the truth beneath the crisis with the help of fischl and oz.
and it appears that you three weren't the only ones who will be working together.
"traveler, allow me to introduce miss fischl and miss/mister y/n, they're senior members of the adventurers' guild." katheryne said, watching you and fischl introducing yourselves to the honorary knight and his companion.
"these guys are the weirdest double act paimon's ever seen... the girl sounds strange enough as it is, but every time her pet bird talks, it gets even weirder..." paimon bluntly comments, causing you to chuckle in response. "i'm sure you have a lot of questions regarding the crisis, we can walk– and fly, of course – and talk on our way to our destination."
"oh, and that's another thing... what's all this about traveling in pairs? this is clearly a party of five!" you chuckle once more from the flying companion's comment as you and the others start heading your way to springvale, ready for what awaits ahead of you five.
throughout the investigation, the five of you obtained very useful intel on what the meteorites can do. other than the fact that your vision can sense when a meteorite is near; it can also awaken the victims that were affected by it, which led you five deciding to dispose all the meteorites in the areas you've been on.
you have also met an astrologist who goes by mona, who greatly helped you all through your investigations on a certain dream that seem to be connected to all the victims.
"you guys go back to where mona is, i'll just check up on other people and follow you when i'm done." you ordered.
"alright then, let's go guys!" paimon says before she flies back to where mona is, others following as well after bidding their farewells to you.
as soon as their figures disappears within your view, you turned around to where the people are with an exhausted sigh.
what a long day
Tumblr media
"aha! i see something here," mona says excitedly. "it's a little vague but i think i can get his name... ah yes! leonard is his name."
"wow that was fast." paimon comments, impression written on her face as mona laughs. "well, i am a genius."
"hmm... "leonard"... paimon hasn't heard that name before–"
"hi!" everyone immediately turns to look at the stranger in alert, only to see the so-called vagrant of inazuma walking towards them with a smile plastered on his face.
"sounds interesting! mind if i join you?" he asks.
"what ho! we meet again, vagrant of inazuma." fischl says, not noticing the astrologist furrowing her eyebrows at the man. "my retinue and i just–"
suddenly mona grabs fischl's and aether's hands together before disappearing within a bubble, leaving the vagrant alone in confusion and disbelief.
...how unbelievable.
scaramouche exhales, his smile disappearing. "the first time, the millelith were present. i had to forego the chance to strike down mondstadt's savior. this time was the perfect moment, i was a few mere seconds away..." he mumbles to himself, staring at where they disappeared.
but who was that mage..? she could not have known who i was. scaramouche thought, trying to think of a reason. perhaps her powers reveal to her things unseen?
"soldiers!"
unnoticed by the harbinger, you were watching not too far from where he is, trying to make out what he's trying to say to his subordinates by the bushes. you were thankful that mona took everyone to safety, but this changes your whole investigation. not only is your companion a target to the fatui, but the fatui's also involved in the crisis. just what is their plan?
you gasp out in surprise when you spotted a meteorite crashing by, only to immediately lower your head to the ground when scaramouche glances to your direction.
you stayed on the ground for a while, unsure whether or not you should look up and start looking for everyone. it didn't help that you could no longer hear the distant voices of the fatui and that you couldn't see them thanks to the bushes blocking your vision.
after a few minutes, you decided to slowly look up from the bushes–
only to see the harbinger looking down at you judgmentally.
"who the hell are you?"
your breath hitches when you felt goosebumps from those words. the same words that you used to stare at before sleeping, the same words that made you think of scenarios of when you're going to meet your soulmate, only to figure out that your first encounter with your soulmate is when you're internally panicking and–
"oh no." you whispered, watching as scaramouche's eyes widens in surprise as well and glance at his wrist that has his soulmate mark.
he then laughs in disbelief when his wrist confirms it. "oh god."

AN INTERVIEW WITH EDDIE REDMAYNE
By Jessica Williams
Discover the interview, digital cover, and exclusive first images from our fashion story, shot in London with the Oscar-winning British actor, Eddie Redmayne, fresh off the heels of his “Best Actor in a Musical” win at The 2022 Olivier Awards for his performance in “Cabaret”. Interviewed for Crash by co-star and friend, American actress, Jessica Williams, at the dawn of the release of “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” the pair discussed their shared love of classic English interior design and slow-poured coffee, “Fantastic Beasts,” and gave us a glimpse into the industry on both sides of the Atlantic.

Irregular stereoscopic piercing suit jacket – Pronounce
ER – We had quite a lot of fun filming “Fantastic Beasts” didn’t we? The joy of these films, I hope you found also, is getting to work with a bunch of beautifully talented, kind-hearted people, in which one is allowed to let your imagination run, I pinch myself everyday about that.
JW – Yes, for sure, I’m really excited for this interview, I think it’s going to be great and we’re going to get to see a side of you that we haven’t seen before. You look very nice today in your black turtleneck.
ER – I’m channeling an English “thesp” (laughing), all in black, in a turtleneck, imagining that I’m playing Hamlet, although I’ve never played Hamlet before, and I have no intention of ever playing Hamlet.
JW – Why don’t you want to play Hamlet?
ER – Because amongst English actors, there’s a canon of parts that you’re meant to play and I always felt that I’d rather play the slightly more random roles. I did play Richard II around ten years ago though and I think as a British actor when you play famous Shakespeare parts, every extraordinary actor before you has already played them and I don’t love being in that litany of people to be compared to, I’d rather do parts that people haven’t played before. Although I thought that when I got the role in “Cabaret », and then I remembered that Joel Grey and Alan Cumming did “Cabaret” actually quite well before! (Laughing)
JW – You were amazing in “Cabaret », did you have fun doing it?
ER – You have a way about you that I’m never quite sure whether you’re being honest or just saying something because you have to.(Laughing) I’ve seen your interviews before, particularly from back in the day with Colbert, and some of the interviews you did at far-right rallies. You are able to pull a really honest face whilst allowing people to skewer themselves with their own absurd words. So seeing your face whilst you are interviewing me makes me feel like I’m skewering myself! (Laughs)
JW – No! I would never do anything to skewer you, except I will ask you where my wrap-gift is? And don’t just hand me something from the hotel room, that’s not going to count.
ER – Well, seen as though you and I share a weird love of a specific type of English house, and one of your favorite designers is Kit Kemp…
JW – Okay, so you just handed me a random Kit Kemp book from the random Kit Kemp hotel that we’re staying in. This is not something that belongs to you, nor is it something for you to give away, but I appreciate the symbolism of it, thank you so much.
ER – You were so thoughtful in giving us all wrap gifts at the end of “Fantastic Beasts”.
JW – The only notable people that didn’t were you and Callum Turner (Theseus Scamander – Fantastic Beasts). But you did leave me an incredibly lovely three-minute voice message saying how much you enjoyed working with me, which I thought was very thoughtful so I appreciate that.
ER – Thoughtful, rather than a material gift…
JW – Well sometimes materials matter. (Laughing) Of course that was appreciated, but I am a Leo! What’s your sign?
ER – I’m a Capricorn.
JW – That makes sense.
ER – But really, does it? I’ve never really understood what any of it means.
JW – It does, you work really hard, you change really quickly to leave work, you’re not the person who will hang around and get after-work drinks.
ER – Is that what Capricorns do? Sorry, is there somewhere in the signs that says that Capricorn actors get out of costume really quickly and go home, is that in the stars? (Laughing)
JW – (Laughs) Definitely! For example, when I went to see you in “Cabaret », I spent a few  minutes enjoying the surroundings and then I came to say thank you for having us and you were already leaving to go home and tuck your kids in.
ER – I mean the truth with “Cabaret” was that I had to go home to sleep, in order to be able to do it again twice the next day, but I was so excited to see you guys. I’d actually prepared my dressing room for your visit!
JW – That’s hysterical. What does that look like then?
ER – I got drinks ready for you, but then, I legged it! (Laughing)
JW – I like that about you though, you’re good about being home to tuck in your kids, it’s really cool.
ER – In all seriousness, the acting world has such a weird life rhythm that constantly shifts. When it comes to my family, I personally had quite a stable upbringing and I’m endlessly trying to find some stability for my kids. My wife and I find that we basically have no control, particularly when I’m doing theater work. I haven’t done a play since Hannah and I got together, and the reality of it is that every night other than Sunday, you’re out working. You have to sleep late in the mornings so you don’t get to see your kids and you’re also living like a monk! You’re not able to drink and you have to be strict with yourself. It’s quite intense to put my wife and kids through that, so I was trying to be quite good at going home when I could.
JW – Sometimes I worry about that as a thirty-two-year-old actor. There’s a weird trajectory where, the more successful you are, the less time you spend at home, and I found that it’s really hard for me to not be at home much. I like being home! It’s really encouraging when I meet actors that are slightly older who have a bit more of a homelife and who actively try to make sure that there’s some stability in their home.
ER – When I was in New York for a play around twelve years ago, part of the fun was friends coming to see it and getting a chance to connect with some people I hadn’t seen since college, it was all about the social element afterwards. But this time, particularly with it being a musical, it was important to protect my voice, which sounds silly but it is important. As you get older you also realize that, even though you have that adrenaline at the end of a show and you want to go out with your mates, you have to be more monastic for the sake of your performance, and your priorities change. In many ways acting is, in its very nature, selfish.
JW – It is, you have to have the audacity to demand that people look at whilst you tell your stories. Everybody has to adjust themselves around you, especially at home and in your personal life. They have to adjust to you being gone also.
ER – Completely, and also you have to commit yourself to the process, whatever it takes. It’s impossible to calcify whatever that process is, but you have to do it. For example with “Cabaret”, I had to get in really early, because I’m old and I was dancing a shit load! I had to stretch for half the afternoon! (Laughing) But also, it’s a bit like being an athlete, even though you’re not doing it until the evening, your head space is there from the early morning, so you’re not necessarily entirely present when you are at home. Now that I’m done with that play, I want to go fully back into just being a dad and a husband.
JW – Completely, you mentioned you went back to school in between filming “Fantastic Beasts” and your performance in “Cabaret”, was that in preparation for being back on stage?
ER – In a way. For years, I would audition for many roles, and if I got the job then I would do it. Then “The Theory of Everything” changed all that and suddenly I was offered scripts without auditioning, and I would have the power to get films greenlit. But what comes with that is that sometimes directors no longer “direct you”. They expect you to just be yourself, but you can’t grow as an actor like that and you still want to be challenged. At the end of last year I was beginning to lose my passion for it all, and finding myself reliant on old ticks and tricks. I then worked with a Danish director called Tobias Lindholm (on “The Good Nurse”) who challenged me in all those brilliant ways, and it reignited something in me. When I finished filming with him in New York, I felt a renewed passion and I knew that for “Cabaret”, there was something “Pierrot-like” or “clown-like” that was intriguing to me and I wanted the character to be shape shifting. When I was at university, I knew a lot of actors who had gone to Lecoq (École internationale de théâtre Jacques Lecoq), which is a physical theater-based  drama school in Paris. He (Jacques Lecoq) was a great practitioner so I just looked it up online and they had some great courses for people in the profession. There was one called “Theater of the Absurd », which I found really intriguing so I applied, sent my CV and went to Paris to live there for a few weeks. It was amazing because it was like going to school again. It was with a group of people from all around the world from age eighteen up to people in their sixties, in an extraordinary space that was steeped in history. It was in an old boxing ring in Paris which was almost like a gymnasium. The teachers were these two doyens, one of whom had worked with Lecoq, and they instantly started playing and interacting with you, and telling you how it is. The interesting thing about “The Theater of the Absurd”, was the idea of something being rooted in absolute truth, but there being a heightened element to it too. You are extraordinary at improvisation, but I don’t have a natural vicinity for it, but watching other people improvise and being forced to do it yourself in front of a group of people was pretty exposing, but also thrilling at the same time. It was very much what I needed at the time. They were so honest to everyone. I don’t know whether I took any of the specifics from it back to “Cabaret”, but I definitely took the experience. I had basically just wanted to fuck myself up a bit.
JW – It’s good to shake things up. Do you feel like you always learn from every character that you play, and what do you take away from them?
ER – I do always find that I learn something, but I never know what that’s going to be. It could either be to do with the work itself, or it could be to do with behavior, for example how not to behave on a film set, or sometimes I find I learn a life lesson. On “Cabaret” for example, our choreographer was an amazing woman called Julia Cheng. We would come to rehearsals everyday, and she would ask everyone to stand in a circle and check in with one another about how we were all feeling emotionally that day, I’d never done anything like it before. People could be very honest in a way that would make me feel super fucking British and awkward, but they could admit that perhaps they’d had a problem at home, broken up with their partner or had a difficult morning for whatever reason. One of the things I loathe about the old hierarchy of film sets, is that someone can turn up on and bring with them a “froideur”. They might just have a chill in them that makes you feel like you have to avoid them and it can bring an entire energy down and feed into the set. The process that Julia did was to allow anyone that was feeling rough to vocalize it and it meant then that we lent into helping that person, but you never had that experience of someone infiltrating or lowering the temperature of an entire room. Instead everyone would actually rally round that person and use the process to push through whatever those hurdles were.
JW – That’s interesting, the idea of being an actor is that we’re often not allowed to have our own emotions. When you are auditioning a lot there is often a lot of rejection that comes with that, but you always have to be ready to do the show. It’s  an interesting idea that you’re allowed to acknowledge how you’re feeling for the day and you’re allowed to be sad.
ER – Sometimes historically, you were made to feel like you should use all those emotions and perhaps it’s helpful for some people, but I’m discovering more and more that I’m not that sort of actor. If I’m working with you and I can feel that you’re in a fury, you might be a brilliant enough actor to be able to turn it on to a point, but I can’t. It bothers me and it gets in my head, so I can’t actually be totally present with you. So generally on film sets I have to make sure that I get on with everyone and I spend quite a lot of energy trying to make sure that everyone is fine. But there are selfish motivations behind it because it’s so that I can do my job well, it’s not like I’m completely selfless.
JW – I have worked a lot with actors like that, they’re the rockstars of the acting world in a way and they have their own process and they almost don’t care about others. They have a very “take me as I am” attitude and you’re right, you’re not at all that kind of actor.
ER – I do think it’s changing though. When I first started acting I worked with a couple of actors whose behavior on set was so dumbfounding and they poisoned the whole thing. Yet you watched their performance in the end product and they were extraordinary but no one else around them was, because their behavior had drained everyone else so much.
JW – It can be so intimidating. What I appreciated on the set of “Fantastic Beasts” was how nice you were to me and also being able to watch you work so close up. It was really cool to see the way you and Jude worked. The fact that you are both English actors is just so different to me, and that you’ve both won BAFTAs!
ER – You mentioned the other day about the English being different, what do you mean by that?
JW – Coming from the States you often have a different route into acting. I didn’t go to drama school personally and whilst there’s a lot of people that do, it is still a very different education. I didn’t know about the set roles that all actors that come from the UK seem to play at some point, it’s like you have your own shorthand. Hearing how you all came into the business from the London scene and you all seem to know a lot of the same people, and it was interesting to see you interact on set. You carry yourself in a particular way and you just have all these interesting stories. I think the fact that you went to boarding school growing up makes you a particular kind of person and informs the way you carry yourself. I don’t know too many people that went to boarding school because in the States, particularly on the West Coast it’s not as big of a thing.
ER – (Laughing) It’s like I went to Hogwarts basically! I think that in the UK the general route is to go to a drama school, and then you might get a bit of a break and be spotted by an agent and you move into theater, where casting directors come and see you play, and then you might get scouted for TV or cinema. I’ve heard that in America, you can start as a kid actor in commercials and go straight into TV or film and you’re not required to spend time working in the theater before.I didn’t actually go to drama school, but I was in a lot of plays whilst I was studying.
JW – Who are your favorite actors, is there anyone in particular who inspired you to get into acting?
ER – It shifts and changes over the years, but it tends to be more performance related. Recently the performances that have blown my mind are Michaela Coel in “I May Destroy You”, Josh O’Connor in “God’s Own Country”, on the flight over here I watched “The Bridges of Madison County” and thought it was brilliant, Meryl Streep’s performance is dumbfounding.
JW – She is amazing. What do you look for when you are watching a performance?
ER – What I’m really looking for is an absolute effortlessness, something authentic that doesn’t feel forced in any way. On stage, the best performance I’ve ever seen was by Billie Piper in “Yerma”. It’s one of those performances where, although you know the actor is doing it every night, you want to go and just hug them and check they’re ok afterwards, which is interestingly how I felt when I was working on “Cabaret” with Jessie Buckley, and also like like Jeremy Strong in “Succession”. For me it’s all about those performances where you can’t see the machinations and the technique behind them. There’s something so unofficial about film sets, fundamentally there are crews of people and tons of technical equipment in front of you, and then another actor, and you have to imagine that none of that’s there. For me, as a colour blind person with shoddy peripheral vision, the way the cinematographer worked on the set of “The Good Nurse” was riveting. It was super dark, so when you were opposite your co-star each you could barely see one another’s eyes, and yet the apertures were so open that when you saw it on playback it looked like normal lighting. But it meant that you were shooting virtually every scene practically in darkness and I found it so thrilling. It did half the work of blacking out and pushing back the presence of other people, and so brought it closer to reality which I found really freeing. Part of the work I usually find most complex on film sets is using that part of your imagination to remove all the falseness that’s in front of you.
JW – When you close your eyes on set in that way do you meditate?
ER – I have tried to meditate. I’ve done those apps, but I find the voice just gets annoying, it’s very irritating and smug! (Laughs)
JW – Well, when you close your eyes and you imagine you’re in a safe place, what is it to you?
ER – My answer is very telling of me as a person actually. It’s a moment on a tropical white sandy beach, instantly followed by a voice saying “Eddie, look at your skin, put some sunscreen on!” (Laughing) Whenever I’m out in the sun moles appear and my skin just gets so damaged.
JW – That’s hysterical! Do you travel a lot? What do you and Hannah (your wife) like to do in your spare time?
ER – Both of us are into art so we go to galleries quite a lot, and we do like to travel a lot yes. She is obsessed with horse riding but I almost killed myself once on a film set having lied about my ability to ride but she still tries to get me into it. I was doing it just before I started “Cabaret” and then I got thrown off again, so I thought for the sake of the production and my own health, that I should probably steer clear. We also like watching cooking shows, when I’m working on a film, I can’t watch other movies because my head goes into a critical place so I either watch really trashy television or cookery programs.
JW – Oh yeah, you know I’m obsessed with reality shows and “Real Housewives” and that’s one of the reasons that I like it, is that I don’t go into that critical hole.
ER – I know you are. I think one of the first conversations we had, you did get critical about it and you could actually write a proper thesis on the psychology behind it.
JW – I am obsessed with it so thank you.
ER – Have you written a thesis before?
JW – No, I didn’t finish school actually, I left college to go to “The Daily Show”.
ER – How did you get scouted for that?
JW – I just auditioned, I was doing improv and sketches in LA. The casting director was Allison Jones, she had always liked me and she just had a hunch that I should do it, and she got me on board. I did it for about five years, I was twenty-two at the time and Jon Stewart just bagged on raw talent, which was nice.
ER – I love Jon Stewart, he’s the best. Normally when you are invited on to American talk shows, you always have a “pre-interview”, and they want you to just tell funny stories that you haven’t talked about previously on other shows, but I’ve run out of material! “The Jon Stewart Show” is more like an actual interview rather than being slightly like a performing monkey.
JW – Absolutely, that is what it’s about on there. A more personal question I have is, how are you able to have coffee at night after dinner?
ER – I am getting worse at that! But this is a French magazine and the Parisians do it all the time so I’ll admit that I just love coffee, I do have a slight addiction to it. During lockdown coffee was one of the things that I started to take time over, when we all started to adopt this idea of slowing down. Taking my time with coffee and really enjoying how it feels to pour, what it looks like, and then really taking a moment with the smell. I’m someone that just rushes through life, so that’s been my equivalent of one of those meditation apps for me actually.
ER  It’s like the film “Another Round” with Mads Mikkelsen (who plays Gellert Grindelwald, Fantastic Beasts) The idea behind it is that there’s a level of drunkenness in which you can get to in which all human beings are their optimum selves, and the film pushes and investigates that. I wonder if there’s like a caffeinated version of that, a specific amount of coffee that actually makes us the best version of ourselves. (Laughs).
JW – Maybe! I got into coffee during the pandemic. Before I just used to only have tea, and my life is now definitely a bit worse, because now I have coffee all the time. I wonder why I did that to myself, but I just love the ritual of it. Another personal question then, what qualities do you like in your friends?
ER – To be brutally honest, it’s because I tend to find them quite funny! Humor is important to me because I’m not a particularly funny person, or outwardly so anyway, so when you find someone where you connect on what that is specifically, it’s so interesting, almost subliminal.
JW – That’s right you can hang out with professional comedians who aren’t able to make you laugh in the same way that your close friends can.
ER – It’s the brutal honesty you have with one another when you’re hungover that I love. Sometimes, I’m the best version of myself when I’m hungover and my filter just disappears! Kindness is important in friends too, because I really think the world is just too full of mean people. And the last thing would be passion, I think that provided one has passion, caveat for those passions being about horrendous things, it’s always an attractive thing, the more random the passion, almost the more attractive it is.
JW – Do you know what kind of dad you want to be and are you ever afraid of being a dad?
ER – What’s interesting about being a dad is that you can have opinions on what sort of parent you want to be and then when you’re in the thick of it, it’s quick fire, and you’re just able to respond as best your instincts allow! You might think you’re going to be “one of those dads” but the reality is that you don’t even have time to think. (Laughing)
JW – What kind of dad did you fantasize that you would be then?
ER –  It’s hard to say, but here’s an example: my children, Luke and Iris, have been asking me recently if I’m a real wizard. I’m torn between not wanting to lie to them, but also between wanting them to think I’m cool. So I eventually ended up telling them that I was a wizard, and now they keep on asking me to do the magic tricks that I do in the trailer for “Fantastic Beasts”, which is obviously slightly difficult considering the only magic trick I know is how to make a coin disappear. Am I now a disappointment or are they going to tell their friends that their dad’s a wizard, and ultimately then get bullied when they find out that their dad’s not a wizard?
JW – So you’re just kind of responding to things as they happen!
ER – Yes all we can do in life is respond!
JW – That’s right! (Laughing) Well thank you so much for answering my questions!
ER – Thanks to you!
