symbolism and significance of clothing/character design in bungou stray dogs

one of the most admirable features of the bungou stray dogs series is the attention to detail in every aspect. i feel that each time i reread or rewatch, i notice new specifics that intrigue me to analyze further. character design, especially the clothes worn by the characters is definitely one of mentioned specifics. in the bungou stray dogs universe, character design does not possess merely an aesthetic function, but it aids in understanding each character - their personality, motivations, the author/work they are inspired by, and what i feel is most notable - their fate (past, present and future) and how it is intertwined with and depends on other characters. this is what i`ll attempt to showcase in the following, on the examples of a few characters.

atsushi nakajima/ryūnosuke akutagawa

naturally, these two are to be analyzed together as their design was, in essence, made to contrast each other - which, just in the start, hints at the momentousness of one to the other. atsushi is the light, akutagawa is the darkness. atsushi's eyes carry vividness and life inside of them, akutagawa's are pure gloom. however, the two are not completely black or white, they are not distinctly "good" or "bad", as they carry parts of each other - which is shown in the hints of black in atsushi`s design (the black streak in his hair, which we were robbed off from in the anime but alright, and in his clothes). the same concept, just vice versa, is seen in akutagawa`s design.

both wear clothes they got from those dear to them, or rather those who gave them a sense of purpose, a reason for living. in atsushi's case, each of the agency members, in akutagawa's case, dazai. the coat is, in a sense, a remnant of akutagawa's experienced trauma, as is atsushi's hairstyle. just from this surface-level description, it can be seen that these two, are in fact, as i`ve written in my other analyses, two sides of the same coin, yin and yang if you will. they`re similar, yet different - they complete each other.

dazai osamu

at first glance, what is most noticeable about dazai`s design are, of course, the bandages wrapped around entirety of his body. i feel that, other than being remnants of previous attempts, these bandages emphasize his seemingly invisible psychological/emotional wounds, protecting him from the real world, and from further pain.

in the dark era, dazai`s left eye is covered by said bandages. at his deathbed, oda takes them off - from that moment on, oda allowed dazai to "see", both "good" and "evil" worlds - as up until now he had only seen a world of evil and suffering, and was blind to what the rest had to offer. thus his other eye was opened.

although, even if he has seen both sides, he still wears the bandages, holding onto them even while imprisoned in mersault. he is still yet to find his reason for living, and is yet to uncover the wounds he`s gotten throughout his life, if ever. this notion of hiding the real self from the world matches well with yozo of no longer human (who i believe was a big inspiration in the making of dazai`s character).

“I have always shook with fright before human beings. Unable as I was to feel the least particle of confidence in my ability to speak and act like a human being, I kept my solitary agonies locked in my breast. I kept my melancholy and my agitation hidden, careful lest any trace should be left exposed. I feigned an innocent optimism; I gradually perfected myself in the role of the farcical eccentric."

this quote also describes the essence of dazai`s character, in simplified terms.

other than that, there exist other obvious contrasts between port mafia and ada dazai - already seen in the usage of colors. in the port mafia era, dazai wears a black coat, given to him by mori. on the other hand, once he joins the ada, dazai wears lighter clothes, symbolizing his turn to the life of good - some black still remains, however. he now wears a bolo tie with a green pendant - many suspect this was a gift from odasaku, which i also believe. dazai holds onto this as a reminder. of his past, and of what he is to do with his future.

sigma

sigma's character stands out in several ways - as he is the only character not inspired by any author, and is a creation of the book. many characters in the series struggle to find a purpose, but in the case of sigma it is even more apparent. that longing for a reason of being becomes the main feature of sigma`s soul, as well as an initiator of his every action.

he is one of the characters with the lightest color palette. i believe that this symbolizes his innocence and divinity as compared to the other characters who have experienced the horrors of the real world all too well. his outfit demonstrates how he initially sees himself - as a manager of the sky casino. it is, at first, the core and essence of his being. the ambiguity of sigma's character and reason of living is also seen with his hairstyle, which is half-and-half, incomplete. uncertain. just like his existence. it`s as if sigma is an unfinished novel.

rest of the characters

the concepts i mentioned beforehand in analyzing character design are also present across other characters in the series. naturally, they embody the works of the authors they are written after, such as kunikida's design. other characters also showcase their fated connections with others, such as chuuya wearing the hat gifted to him by mori. (i could make a separate post about chuuya`s design and how it follows his development through the series, which i might just as well do later because this is already getting too long). the contrast between the past and present self seen in dazai can also be applied to ranpo's attire (the past being before he met fukuzawa - wearing only black clothes, representing the darkness of his mental state. the present being his current look, which embodies what he sees as his main role and reason - a detective). i will touch up more on these certain characters and their designs in upcoming posts.

and...the color purple?

now, i believe this may be a stretch but as i am obsessed with color symbolism and especially purple, i will just get this out.

now, there are a few characters with purple presence in them in bungou stray dogs, as it's a rather rarely used color. i`d noticed that the mentioned characters all had something in common - an uncanny, almost haunting presence at times, as well as experiencing deep psychological distress or disorder. which made me wonder: what could purple mean in character design? and most specifically - purple eyes, which are seen to be rare among the cast?

you can already draw a correlation between fyodor and fukuchi as purple-eyed characters. but once you add yosano and mori into the mix, the reasoning changes. when you think of it, it`s all characters who have power over human lives in a sense more divine than the other characters - fyodor and yosano with their ability, as well as fukuchi with his sword and persona, mori being a doctor.

but then again, we also have sigma who is engulfed in lighter shades of purple, unlike any other character in bungou stray dogs. which makes me wonder about his possible future role.

Roman, I'd love to hear something mythology related about the mutual evolution of mythology - when two or more cultures feature the same mythological figures despite having little/no contact with each other.

This is actually quite difficult for a layperson to research and because I do not professionally study comparative mythology and religion you're gonna have to take what I say here with that in mind.

It's partially difficult to talk about this because historically the world has always been a lot more interconnected than most people think it is. Some ideas are also way older than we think they are. For example, we have story tropes (not stories but tropes) that possibly date back to when humans first started to spread around and out of Africa. Like one of the Pleiades being hard to see and there being a reason one of the stars either left or became dim. We know this might date back all the way to Africa because while humans were still confined to Africa there was a slight shift in perspective for various reasons that made the seventh star in the Pleiades harder to see. But keeping all that in mind, Here's a couple of stories that I just think are neat.

The 7 sisters get chased into the sky:

The Kiowa people of the Great Plains tell the story of the 7 sisters or the Pleiades like this (based on a telling by I-See-Many-Camp-Fire-Places, Kiowa soldier at Fort Sill, Oklahoma,1897):

One day, seven little girls were playing together by a stream a little too far from the town. As they were playing, a bear saw them and began to rush at them. Seeing the bear coming, the girls began to run back towards town where the adults could fight the bears back. Soon they realized that they couldn't make it back in time so they scrambled up some tall rocks to try to escape, but the rocks were not tall enough. The bears began climbing. Seeing this, the girls began to yell and beg and plead with the rocks to save them, and the rocks did. They grew and grew into a steep pillar that the bears clawed at but could just not climb. And the girls? The kept rising even after the rocks had stopped growing. And they rose and rose up into the sky until they turned into stars.

Compare this to the Greek story of the 7 sisters:

The Pleiades were seven sisters, daughters of the titan Atlas. Because Atlas was stuck holding up the world, he could not protect his daughters and they did not know how to fight. So when the giant Orion saw them and became determined to rape them, all they could do was run and run and run. And they ran and ran and Orion chased them and chased them and would not give up. He was huge, his strides were huge, and he could walk on water. Eventually the sisters realized that Orion would literally never stop, so they cried out to the other gods for help. Zeus heard their cry and lifted them into the heavens to save them from Orion where they turned into stars.

Not exactly the same. The danger is different, but the result is the same.

The Earth is a dead body:

Pangu, from Chinese Mythology:

In the beginning, there was nothing. Then, there was an egg. From this egg emerged Pangu, a hairy unfathomably gigantic man with horns. Pangu separated Yin from Yang and earth and sky from each other with a swing of his mighty axe and to keep earth and sky separated he pushed them apart with his giant body, and after he died, his blood became the rivers, his eyes became the sun and moon, his breath became the wind, clouds, and mist, and his body became the mountains and valleys.

Ymir, from Norse Mythology:

In the beginning, there was ice and fire with nothing but the yawning void between them. Over time, the ice and fire mixed and together they formed a giant named Ymir, a cow, and block of salty ice. From the salty ice and the licking of the cow came a man named Buri. From Ymir came the Jotunns, and Buri's gransons were Odin, Vili, and Ve. The three brothers became tired of there being no world, and the only thing big enough to create a world with was Ymir, so they killed him and from his flesh came the earth, his bones the mountains, his hair the trees, his blood the water, his brains the clouds, and his skull the sky.

Tlaltecuhtli from Aztec mythology:

Before the creation of the 5th world, Quetzalcoatl and Tezcalipoca descended from the heavens and realized that anything they created would be eaten by the monster Tlaltecuhtli standing in the ocean so before the creation of the 5th world, Tlaltecuhtli would have to die. While wrestling with her, one of Tezcalipoca's legs was bitten off, but despite this Quetzalcoatl and Tezcalipoca each grabbed one of Tlaltecuhtli's arms and with a mighty surge of strength tore her in half. Half of her body became the land, while the other half became the sky. Her skin became the plants of the world, Her nose the hills and valleys, her shoulders the big mountains, her mouth the caves, and her eyes the freshwater springs.

So yeah, the earth as a dead body. Weirdly common.

Retro Random: Hunter x Hunter 1999 Pt.2

Lo prometido es deuda. Con ustedes, Los locos Ada-Ah no. La familia Zoldyck, quise decir.

No vamos a hablar de cada miembro en esta ocasión porque me llevaría varios posteos, pero sí voy a comentar que la mayoría son unos excelentes asesinos muy orgullosos del negocio familiar. Excepto por un albino, que busca otro tipo de vida. Sí, estamos hablando de él: Killua Zoldyck.

Travieso, un poco arrogante, buen pibe por dentro, traumatizado, carga con un pasado oscuro y un presente tambaleante. Él quiere cambiar de vida, no quiere volver a asesinar, pero a veces se despierta ese otro yo y todo vuelve a empezar. La historia de Killua, junto con la de Kurapika, me parece una de las más tristes y amargas de toda la serie. Amargura que supieron retratar muy bien con una paleta de colores oscuros al mostrar su pasado o cuando se ve poseído por su yo asesino. Las luces tenues y sombras acompañan de una forma tan magistral las escenas que simplemente te sentís en esa penumbra que es la psiquis de Killua, pesada y sofocada.

Arrancando lo que va a ser una de las muchas comparaciones con Hunter x Hunter 2011, creo que la versión de los noventa supo ambientar mejor la serie utilizando una paleta de colores cálidos, muchas sombras, reflejos leves en los ojos, escenarios lúgubres, etc. La fotografía escoltaba la historia de cada arco y personaje, provocando que te sumieras aún más en la serie. En cambio, la versión del 2011 (que igual me gustó mucho) está impregnada de luz que aplasta la calidad narrativa de la historia, restándole así suspenso y dramatismo.

Un ejemplo tomado de nuestro amigo Volter, que se tomó el tiempo de hacer muchas comparaciones entre la serie noventosa y la del 2011:

Como ven, se siente mucho más el terror de Killua por illumi en la versión del 99. Las luces bajas influyen, marcando sombras en el rostro, también la mirada aterrorizada de él. Siento que mucho de eso se pierde en la versión del 2011 por su brillantina innecesaria y efectos de más. La versión del 99 es simple y con un dibujo más realista, y por eso mismo, en mi opinión, pega más duro en la psiquis. La única queja que tengo es que en el doblaje latino a illumi le pusieron voz de mujer (flashearon que era mina). Un pequeño error que no quita mi amor por el doblaje latino que tanta nostalgia me da ♥ Respecto a esta escena en la versión del 2011, rescato la música. Me gusta más. Sin embargo, si tengo que elegir, me quedo toda la vida con la versión de los noventa.

Con esta escena me pasa exactamente lo mismo:

La fotografía tétrica del 99 se aplica mejor al momento del asesinato y ayuda a transmitir lo perdido y resignado que estaba Killua. Esto es solo una opinión basada en mis preferencias, no digo que sea una verdad universal. Sobre gustos no hay nada escrito. Pero bueno, como estamos hablando de mis gustos, me voy a inclinar siempre hacia el anime de los noventa.

Killua es ese personaje que arrancó siendo inmediatamente uno de mis favoritos. Primero por algo que considero muy importante: quiere cambiar de vida, no quiere seguir los pasos de sus progenitores. Y me parece perfecto. Hay que salir del cascarón, hay que vivir la vida como uno quiera. Me encanta ver su desarrollo; cómo lentamente se va abriendo a Gon, las dudas que lo atacan por su pasado que no puede borrar, sus recaídas como asesino, los cambios de pensamiento, cómo pasa de ser arrogante a humilde gracias al cariño de Gon. Y cuando entiende finalmente que son amigos. Gon es, básicamente, su luz. El que lo guía por un largo sendero de aventuras y crecimiento personal hasta que al final (o casi final) del manga Killua encuentra su propio camino. Se complementan perfectamente. Son como el Yin y el Yang, con sus peleas y todo.

Esa sonrisa suave solo se la regala a Gon. ¿Me voy al carajo si digo que Gon le enseñó a sonreír? No sé, pero el vínculo que tienen, para mí, es mucho más profundo que la amistad. Gon fue su primer amigo, el que le enseñó a querer, a cuidar y valorar. El que lo obligó a superar sus traumas y miedos. Estuvieron mucho tiempo juntos, por eso cuando se separaron al final del anime del 2011 se me partió el corazón. Entiendo que cada uno tenía que seguir su camino, PERO YO LOS SHIPPEABA. Sí, como siempre, tanto yo como otros ilusos caímos en el delirio del ship. Es que no podés no shipearlos. Dale, mirálos.

Miles de Doujins, Fanarts y Fanfiction, gracias a todos los dioses existentes, fueron los encargados de secarnos las lágrimas a lxs que sufrimos la separación de estos dos.

Killua a veces alimentaba la fantasía Yaoi con sus escenitas de celos. No le gustaba que se acercaran tanto a su mejor amigo. Más de una vez le hizo un planteo que me llevó a pensar si realmente lo veía como algo más que un amigo. Bueno, si este fuera un mundo ideal, Killua sería el que movería ficha primero. Gon es muy inocente todavía para saber el verdadero significado de "gustar o amor romántico". En cambio, algo me dice que Killua lo entendió antes que él. Y gracias a él, ju ju.

Bueno basta. Dejando de lado la fantasía Yaoi, por supuesto que una amistad así de fuerte no se borra jamás. Tenemos fe de que el mejor dúo vaya a regresar algún día.

Hay un tema que viendo Hunter x Hunter 2011 me jodía la existencia aunque la mayoría le restara importancia: la escases de cambios de Outfit. Siempre estaban con la misma ropa cuando, en comparación, en la versión de los noventa tanto Gon como Killua desfilaron Outfits super cancheros por toda la serie. Más Killua, que demostró ser todo un señorito a la moda. Sin embargo, no podemos dejar de lado la polera de Gon. ESA POLERA SIN MANGAS ♥

Una facha tremenda. Qué lastima que no agregaron todos esos Outfits o unos nuevos a la versión del 2011.

Quiero hablar más sobre Killua y otros personajes, así como seguir con las comparaciones de ambas series porque me parece súper interesante ver las diferencias, por ende, se viene una tercera parte de este posteo. Sí, me van a tener que bancar un rato más.

So, I 've been referring to the tool Totosai uses to pull teeth as pliers but I believe they're actually pincers. I'm not going to change the wording in my previous drabbles, but pincers is what I'm calling them from here on.

“So, what does it do?”

Rin frowned. “Then what was the point?”

“You've learned the process.”

“Yes, but…it really gained no power?”

“A-Un is a two-headed dragon,” Totosai explained. “Yin and yang. You have Un’s tooth; the yin, but it’s ineffective without a yang tooth from the other head.”

Rin nodded and Totosai stroked his beard.

“You know, I still have my pincers—”

“Stay out of my dragon’s mouth.”

Shang tsung island redesign idea. Look it can be spooky without it being unlivable. Like shang tsung isn't a man to live in squander. Fr. Nrs what tf were you thinking? Even if nobody's lived there in a while. It's kinda mystical. So I'd imagine it to ya know be pretty even if its "overgrown" with nature.

Like its a fucking tropical paradise.

So shangs island should always be beautiful even the more "questionable" parts of his island. Goros lair should ve more expansive and fitting for a shokan prince.

His throne room should be big and lavish. Reds n golds. Dragon motifs. Serpentine carvings. Etc.

His island main keep and main palace where he lives should be the center of the island. And the designated "kombat zones/arenas" should be various places,but should look like actual tournament style arenas. The main big one should be in his throne room. Where a tournament starts and then ends.

Any prison or dungeon areas are accessible only to shang tsung and his loyalists/cult members.

Shrines are seen throughout the island. Some small. And the main temple is located on a smaller island offshore of the main island. His island from aerial view looks like a yin yang symbol,i hc shang is a taoist. It makes sense. Balance,life n death,pain and healing,suffering and then enlightenment. The neverr ending cycle of things, That whole thing.

His island should change slightly every so often as some kind of euclidean horor or force. As it is a pocket in between realms and a neutral point. Thats why it was chosen for mortal kombat tournaments. However the main palace never changes,anything within the living quarters,and his personal courtyard should never change. As it is a symbol to him he is eternal,that and shang doesn't wanna waste magic resources.

Shangs bedroom,is lavish af. Hella lavish.

Surprisingly,his bathrooms and kitchen is more modernish. Compared to everything else. Hey look,he's not the kind of man to not keep up with the times somewhat. Like he's old but come on man. Well, to answer your questions, I made that comic for a little bit of self-indulgence, but I did do some research long ago on the internet. According to what I found, the True Fire of Samadhi’s user is not just Red Boy (aka Red Son), but also some other characters, that includes Nezha, which is why I made the connection about the Fire. The concept of granting celestial gifts is all base on my understanding of Chinese mythology and believes, I’ll try to explain:

in the world where living beings, demons and gods exist, there’re two kinds of energy, the positive energy (the Yang) possessed by deities and celestial beings, the negative energy (the Yin) possessed by demons and those of the underworld. Both energy exits in two parallel realms connected and existed by the mortal realm (the very place that begins everything). When an individual possessing one kind of energy (for instance negative energy like Red Son) gain the opposite kind of power (Nezha’s blessing), the energies conflicts and starts to grow to compete for which one will claim the body, that conflict will be out of control if the body is not strong or suitable enough. (My guessing why the fire didn’t hurt Mei was because she’s part Dragon, one of the neutral beings that dwell the mortal realm, but I might be wrong)

Sanzuwu/Yatagarasu (parte 1)

Mi piace questo sottile paragone tra gli umani/youkai e il corvo/coniglio e quindi Sole/Luna,Yang e Yin (ricordate che il Maten Kyo e il Seiten Kyo sono le Scritture che dominano lo Yin e Yang rispettivamente, tanto che lo stesso Maten Kyo aveva un lignaggio demoniaco prima dell’Anomalia) ma la cosa che ha attratto la mia curiosità è l’ultimo disegno raffigurante lo Yatagarasu o più precisamente il Sanzuwu (三足烏). Sappiamo come nella Minekura molti concetti, storie, miti ecc. spesso siano fusi e con-fusi come in questo caso e dunque vi è la necessità di scindere i vari pezzi pertanto dividerò in due parti (si spera XD) questa analisi.

Origini

Prima di parlare di esso però voglio agganciarmi al mito cinese implicito nell'ultima frase di Ukoku, come si può notare si vede un corvo (o cornacchia più probabilmente considerato l'areale di distribuzione del Corvus macrorhynchos colonorum nell'area del sito neolitico della cultura Yangshao e del Corvus macrorhynchos tibetosinensis se consideriamo la sovrapposizione geografica col C.m.colonorum della dinastia Shang), dalle parvenze più della fenice Fenghuang che di un corvide, inscritto nel disco solare poiché nel mito cinese e in quello giapponese derivato dal primo il corvo/la cornacchia è legato al Sole. In Cina le prime testimonianze del corvo solare (lo chiamo così perché come viene di solito chiamata “corvo/cornacchia a tre zampe” non mi convince molto e ve lo spiegherò più avanti) risalgono già nel 5000 a.C. dove viene rappresentato come uccello totemico e pare che il luogo d’origine di questa figura è Shandong provincia costiera situata lungo la regione più orientale della Cina. 

Già nelle ceramiche neolitiche risalenti dal 5000 al 3000 a.C. troviamo la rappresentazione del corvo solare,detto anche Sanzuwu, nelle culture Yangshao e Longshan. Altre scoperte archeologiche nel villaggio Quanhu-chun (città di Liuzi-zhen, provincia di Shaanxi) rivelano la presenza di ceramiche su cui è rappresentato l’uccello totemico sulle cui ali spicca il Sole. Interessante notare come nella cultura Yangshao oltre al corvo solare gli è affiancato nella rappresentazione un rospo su una Luna crescente.

Notare il corvo a sinistra e il rospo sulla Luna a destra rappresentati in questo dipinto trovato nel sito archeologico di Mawangdui. L'immagine è lo stendardo del corteo funebre dipinto su seta della dinastia Han occidentale trovato nella tomba Mawangdui Han di Xin Zhui, nota anche come Signora Dai (morta nel 168 a.C.), raffigurante il rospo lunare (in alto a sinistra) e il corvo solare (in alto a destra). Qua vedete lo stendardo nella sua interezza, notare come ancora sia presente quell'antica traccia tripartita del mondo (cieli, mondo umano e mondo di sotto o aldilà di sciamanica memoria).

Questa rappresentazione già antica di 7000 anni,continuò per altri 3000 anni fino a che l’uccello divenne un corvo (o cornacchia) dorato e la rana in un rospo,ritratto di un credo secondo cui il corvo è l’anima del Sole mentre il rospo l’anima della Luna.

È molto probabile che il motivo del corvo solare e il mito dei dieci corvi (che spiegherò anch'esso più avanti) si siano originati col popolo Shang il cui mito proliferò dal sud fino alla provincia Fujian,da notare tra l’altro che il loro mito della creazione asserisce che essi siano nati dall'uovo dell’uccello nero.

Nel libro di Sara Allen, Shape of the Turtle: myth, art and cosmos in early China, si dice:

“There appears to be an association between the ten-sun tradition and southern China. It might be argued that this was not a Shang tradition retained in the south during the Zhou, but one which originated in the state of Chu – a number of Shang sites in the Chu region and the connection between Shang and Chu culture has been confirmed by archaeological excavation. The most extensive finds were from Tianhu in Luoshan County, just south of the Huai River in southern Henan Province well connected to the south.  The Zhou ruler claimed this title “wang” or king exclusively for the son of heaven tianzi  history, in the Shang Dynasty, the rulers of many states used this title and were recognized by the Shang ruler who was also called king (wang).”

Col passare del tempo il mito dei dieci corvi solari si trasformò in quello dell’unico corvo solare e questo avvenne quando la dinastia Zhou conquistò e dominò sulla dinastia Shang nel 1045 a.C. da dieci corvi si passò ad uno solo tant'è che lo stesso Mencio cita Confucio dire “Il Cielo non ha due soli,i popoli non hanno due re…” comunque a livello popolare la credenza e il mito dei dieci soli rimase. A livello folkloristico si diceva che i dieci Soli fossero appollaiati sui rami del gelso (genere Morus) chiamato Fusang, situato ad Est ai piedi della Valle del Sole e che quindi questo albero fungesse da luogo d’origine dei dieci Soli.

Per capire come mai il corvo/cornacchia è una figura importante devo fare un’introduzione alla religione Shang impermeata di elementi sciamanici, ritualistici e religiosi vari, quindi scusatemi se vi rompo le balle con queste digressioni ma sono utili per meglio capire queste cose (cara Minekura quanto mi fai “dannare” per separare i vari pezzi che sapientemente hai fuso e con-fuso XD, non è vero lo adoro!).

Religione Shang

La religione del popolo Shang è molto vasta e complessa in quanto unisce elementi vari quali cerimonie, teologia, dogmi, rituali, divinazioni, elementi sciamanici ecc. La prima cosa da tenere in mente è l’importanza e il ruolo rilevante che il culto degli Antenati, con relativi sacrifici, aveva nel popolo Shang. La genealogia regale conteneva 35 Antenati storici, che includeva sia i regnanti pre-dinastici che dinastici con le relative consorti. Ad essi sono associati i miaohao ossia i “nomi-templi” a cui sono dati offerte e rituali vari. Oltre a questi troviamo figure storiche che hanno svolto il ruolo di importanti ministri quali Huang Yin, Yi Yin, Xian Wu e Xue Wu e insieme a loro ci sono figure mitologiche i cosiddetti gaozu ossia gli “Alti Antenati” e sono Nao, Er e Wang Hai.

Non è semplice poter schematizzare la religione Shang, tuttavia è possibile farsi un’idea tramite la seguente suddivisione:

Dio (o Dei) supremo: Di

Dei cosmici: Fang, Dongmu, Ximu

Forze naturali: Sole, Luna, Stelle, Fulmine, Pioggia

Spiriti naturali: Tu, Yue, He

Antenati mitici: Nao, Ji, Wang Hai, Wang Heng

Antenati pre-dinastici: Shang Jia,Bao Yi, Bao Bing, Bao Ding, Shi Ren, Shi Gui

Antenati dinastici: Da Yi, Da Ding, Da Jia, Bu Bing poi basta perché non ne ricordo più, sono un bel po'

Consorti degli Antenati dinastici: Bi Jia, Bi Yi ricordo solo queste due

Ministri reali: Huang Yin, Yi Yin, Xian Wu, Xue Wu, Jin Wu, Mie

Come detto i rituali svolgevano un ruolo dominante, ma anche come, quando farli e quali tipi (tutto questo era inciso sulle ossa da oracolo) ad esempio i sacrifici prevedevano molti tipi di cose e i più comuni erano: cibo, vino, buoi, maiali, pecore e cani (curioso poi che fosse praticata anche la castrazione di questi animali, soprattutto dei maiali). Oltre a questi si aggiungevano animali selvatici catturati durante le spedizioni venatorie e i sacrifici umani (guerrieri catturati e il metodo usato per il sacrificio era la decapitazione). Lo ammetto che sono della forte idea che lo Sciamanesimo abbia svolto un ruolo fondamentale in tutto questo in quanto era necessario il contatto tra i vari mondi (Inferiore, di Mezzo e Superiore) e per farlo erano necessari riti e offerte varie ma bisognava anche effettuarli nel modo corretto come la tradizione sciamanica esige, che poi sia divenuta una religione pre-burocratica non lo escludo anzi come tutte le cose c’è sempre evoluzione.

I sacrifici di vino e animali avevano proprio lo scopo di influenzare le forze cosmiche al fine di ottenere vantaggi, il che è più che naturale e logico. Le divinazioni avevano poi come scopo ultimo quelle di poter far diventare il regnante deceduto un Antenato per poi accedere al Dio supremo Di il quale controlla tutte le forze cosmiche e naturali, quindi si arrivava a negoziare ed eventualmente a controllare tali spiriti, Antenati e forze. Ai gaozu erano sacrificati ad esempio i buoi (gli animali grandi erano da preferirsi a quelli piccoli), specie se bianchi perché rari ma anche altri animali di colore bianco e in certi frammenti ossei su cui erano incise le divinazioni anche “uomini bianchi”,ma il carattere cinese bai per alcuni è da intendersi come “cento”.

Lo so che c’è molto, moltissimo da dire ma è per dare un’idea molto generale di quello che era la religione Shang, ora torniamo al nostro corvo.

Perché il corvo/cornacchia?

Il corvo (o cornacchia) è associato ai re Shang e alla dinastia Shang in generale e sappiamo come i regnanti divenissero gaozu una volta morti e come il regno dei vivi e dei morti sia altamente connesso,poiché il morto continua ad esistere come Antenato (tradizione sciamanica). Il mito Shang parla dei dieci Soli, il gruppo che governava aveva una relazione totemica con tali Soli e questo mito è intrinsecamente legato alla cultura Shang. Sappiamo anche che i corvi sono appollaiati sui rami del Fusang, albero di gelso i cui frutti sono rossi o bianchi e nelle iscrizioni oracolari ossee si dice che da esso ci siano molte bocche da cui si appollaiano i Soli, curioso poi notare come il carattere cinese che indica l’albero significhi anche “supporto” a significare come esso funga da supporto per i Soli (non è infrequente nelle mitologie la presenza di un albero che sorregga qualcosa che è vitale per il mondo). Un’altra cosa interessante, leggendo le parole di Ukoku in merito al fatto che i corvi risiedano all'interno delle macchie solari, è un passaggio del Shanhaijing un testo classico cinese che descrive vari luoghi e culture in modo mitologico. In esso si dice: “All'interno dei Soli ci sono giovani corvi; nella Luna rospi.” Anche nelle tombe della dinastia Han (ben postuma alla dinastia Shang) troviamo i Soli con i corvi inscritti e la Luna col rospo, notare poi che i corvi hanno due zampe e non tre, tuttavia in alcune tombe vedremo già tre zampe. Anche nella cultura giapponese né il Kojiki né il Nihon Shoki menzionano che lo Yatagarasu ha tre gambe, e il primo riferimento allo Yatagarasu con tre gambe è Wamyō Ruijushō (un dizionario giapponese di caratteri cinesi.), scritto a metà del periodo Heian (intorno al 930), e si pensa che a quel tempo volta Yatagarasu venne identificato con il corvo solare (a tre zampe), un uccello mitico della Cina e della Corea, e divenne a tre zampe. È possibile che la credenza nell'uccello come messaggero degli dei, originariamente esistente nella mitologia giapponese, si sia fusa con la credenza cinese nell'uccello spirituale del sole.

Küllük yerine antik çağdan kalma sınırsız dolma yetisi olan maşrapa seçilmiş, sonsuzluğa giden dumanın küllerine eşlikçi. Bir küçük saksıda bambaşka iki tür kaktüs saksı-kırarcasına itişip kakışmakta birbirleriyle. Sürüngenler hakkında detaylı bilgi ve görsellerin bulunduğu Felemenkçe bir referans doğa kitabı el altında tutuluyor, küçük bir detay ekleneceğinde defalarca dönülüp incelenmek üzere.

Ama her şey sadece doğalına, kitabına uygun da değil burada, insan zihninin ürettiği, çarpıtageldiği, sanrıladıkları da girip çıkıyor boyutlar atlanır, burun(lar)dan duman(lar) verilip verdirilirken. Küçük defterde uzunca yazılıdır bunlar elbette. Oniki tane beş kenarlı yüzden oluşan bir dodecahedron ve bir ortası delik ahşap üçgen de iki boyutluların tasarlanmasında bir ölçü aracı olarak işlevlendikleri yetmezmiş gibi üç boyutluların bir de tırmanış patikası oluvermişler. Çizim defterinin dolu olan sol sayfasına, üste yanaşık düzende yirmi tam ya da eksik altıgenler fikir aldıkları dodecahedronun beş kenarlı yüzüne çarparcasına bir kenar daha kuşanıp ahşap üçgen yardımınca kalıplanmış. Timsahlar kertenkeleye dönüşürken bir boyut kaybederken beşgenlerin tam tersine bir kenar eklemesi bir yin-yang durumu yaratmakta. İki boyutlu timsahlar üç farklı renkteler. Sürüngenler bir yandan da tıpkı Perec’in muhtemelen Escher’in Reptiles adlı eserinden de nektarlanıp yazdığı Yaşam Kullanma Kılavuzu’ndaki Bartlebooth'un puzzlelarındaki gibi iç içe geçmeye elveren altı uzuvlu formda resmedilmişler. Bu sol defter yaprağındaki sürüngenler resminin sol altına “direhoek IA3 type” diye üç(gen) notunu düşmüş iki boyutlu sürüngenleri sanan. Diğer objelerin de resime eklendiği bir üst resimin sol altına da bu sefer III-'43 MCE tarihi ve isim baş harfleri logolanmış resmi yapanca. Ve en sonunda bir kadraj numarası ile görüşümüz daha da geri çekilip bu çalışmadan üretilen kopyalardan gördüğümüzün No:12/30 numaralı olduğunu belirten MCEscher imzası atılmış halini görüyoruz çalışmanın.

Kurucu eksik ise tüm incelemelere karşın bulunamayan ama hayalin gerçekleştirilmesinde kullanılmış bir kurşunkalem!

1 -    i auditioned for a wes anderson film, b.reaking dawn, and misc. other things as a child, but i decided to stop acting as i got older so i could have a ‘real high school experience.’ gotta be the biggest L of my life.

2 -     i met half of all my closest friends and my partner on a fucking karaoke app.

3 -   i keep thinking about choosing a new pen name but then i get nervous that maybe someone already has that pen name and has a callout post of some kind and that i’d stress out people i don’t know by popping up as a blog with that pen name because what if they think i’m the other person with that pen name and then i’m making them feel unsafe and then i get really sad thinking about how scary would that be for them and then i realize i’m literally worrying about writers that i literally made up and don’t even exist ... so i just stick to kaliya.
