Okay, I wanna take just a second to talk about things I actually liked in the finale. (In roughly chronological order because I can't remember exact timing of some scenes.)
Stuff I already mentioned: The last ride of the Diamond Dogs, with Roy finally joining the pack! COLIN KISSING HIS FELLA AT THE END OF THE MATCH! Rebecca choosing to keep Richmond and share it with the fans! A women's team!
1.) Higgins and Keeley trying to get Rebecca to talk about Rupert's divorce. I relate to the mixture of trying to be a supportive friend, wanting the tea, and wanting the opportunity to trash someone you hate.
2.) Ted and Rebecca sitting right beside each other in a sea of empty seats. It was kind of romantic, but I also liked it as a callback to Ted and Roy sitting together in one of the earliest episodes. So I would've liked a little callback to the "This is what my ticket says" line which is an underrated joke, IMO, and would've helped the tension, but that's fine.
3.) I love Rebecca outlining how Henry could come over to England, and having a plan for Michelle, too, because she doesn't just want to pull him away from his other parent. She really cares about Ted's family. But then she doesn't mention Jake at all cause fuck that guy.
4.) Ted's approval of the team's good-bye dance leading to a completely over-the-top celebration complete with Trent taking off his jacket and whirling it in the air. It was so ridiculous.
5.) The return of Shannon! Did we see her in any other episode this season?
6.) Sassy roasting Rupert one last time. I love it. I love her.
7.) Beard going a little too hard on the good-bye video and everyone starting the match crying.
8.) Barbara.
9.) I really like how much of the match we got to see. I feel like it took up half the runtime or so? Which feels like a lot more than we usually get and I feel like that makes sense given what a big part of the ending it was.
10.) I love Dr. Sharon getting so into the match. She really loves that team. And her coming back to head up a whole mental wellness department was so lovely.
11.) The whole part with the BELIEVE sign and the fact that they kept the pieces close to them. I was a little skeptical at first cause, like, it sure didn't seem like enough pieces to go around but yeah, it got me in the end.
12.) Higgins seeing that Isaac is taking the kick and immediately trying to protect his wife.
13.) Rupert being chased off the pitch by thousands of people calling him a wanker. Poetic cinema.
14.) Ted doing the same dance that he did with his former team.
15.) The return of the Ussie Guy!
16,) The snowglobe!
17.) KBPR! Complete with that one guy! I forget his name but I liked him.
Hey, that's a longer list than I expected, tbh.
Okay, back to complaining.

I think I'm gonna come on here and spew my thoughts and feelings about each episode rather than on Twitter. I think I'll also say more about each episode here than over there...
Anyway! I'll keep everything under a cut just in case. Although it's been a while since the episode dropped, I just wanna be safe!
Episode 1 - Smells Like Mean Spirit
Tumblr media
Here we go!
Oo scruffy Ted!! 😍
Why is she in his phone as 'Michelle Lasso'? I don't have anyone I really know in my phone with their full name. SHE IS THE MOTHER OF YOUR CHILD!!!
Still with the 'Ted has feelings for his ex' thing I see...
Henry's cute
Henry's been in London for 6 weeks and we saw none of it?! RUDE!
He still talks to Sharon! I love that
LEGO NELSON ROAD!!
OMG these Lego characters are brilliant!! And Ted & Rebecca next to each other 👀
It looks like they had fun whilst he was there...
EXCUSE ME why the same shower scene from season 1?!
So this season is going to be about Ted thinking about where he belongs then?
BRENDAN HUNT'S PARTNER AND SON!!! He is one cute baby!!
Earl Greyhound Training Facility. Nice.
Sharon Fieldstone! You cheeky bitch!! I love her
YYEEEAAAAHHH!!!!
Angry Rebecca is back. I'm in love
Hannah, looking delicious as ever 🥵
Something's wrong because he didn't rhyme? So true haha
I'm so fucking excited to see more Rupert this season!!
Ooo she's struggling with this, huh
She swears ALL THE TIME! Why did that one shock Higgins so much!?
Howdy & Yo. And then she nearly walked into the door frame. Amazing.
I need Dani's optimism
And Jamie's confidence haha
Roy & Beard's friendship is my favourite
FIFA reference, of course
His tiny car with those super cars is a great visual
Hello West Ham's Higgins
KEELEY!!!
'Fuck you, Joe Rogan' Exactly.
'Angel, Mentor, Guru Rebecca' How fucking cute are they!! 🥰
It's Katy Wix!! Love her!
Keeley's office looks like a fun place... 🫣
Their friendship is gorgeous. I love this gossip dynamic
Rebecca's reaction to Keeley just throwing her coat 😂 Amazing.
Yikes?! Where did she pick that up, I wonder...
Don't cry Keeley!!
Aww, mumma Rebecca to the rescue 🥹 She's so maternal
We must protect Dani at all costs!!
I love spotting Will in the background, he's always doing something fun
Of course their driver was a cult leader
EVERYONE RUN EXCEPT ROY!!
'Like an orgasm for the soul' You sure have a way with words, Rebecca
Gotta let Ted be Ted. Too right!
I KNEW that 'legend' bit was edited in the preview clip!
Loving uncomfortable, awkward Rebecca
And of course Keeley sees no problem is spending £200 on flowers because they look and smell nice
SHE SEEMS FUN!! Great Beard call back! 😂
Corporate Flying Object. Please never change Keeley!
She's eating meat again...👀 Hmm, okay
I can't wait for more Keeley & Rebecca bonding. It's my favourite
Fucking dumb-dumb line. Nathan is vile. Nick is brillaint.
They named him Disco purely for that line. Tell me I'm wrong
RUPERT! In his cartoon villain lair! Complete contrast to Rebecca's office
I fucking LOVE Anthony Head. He plays slimy so well
We're getting to see how Rupert charms his way onto people, interesting.
'Roy Kent, that you?' 'Get fucked' I just love him, guys!
'Why are you dressed like an umlaut?' Why ask if you have a matching one, Leslie??
MY GOD does Hannah looking FUCKING FIT in this episode. Only thought in my head every time she's on screen
Field trip to a fucking sewer! Let's go, boys!
Of course Henry asked to tour the sewer system because he watched IT and got scared. It is fucking smart, well said Roy!
'Twat' Well said Rebecca
Rupert is going to keep saying 'Wonder Kid' isn't he, because he knows it gets to Nate 👀
West Ham's press room isn't as fun as Richmond's
Oooo a King & I reference... okay, okay
I really wish spitting wasn't his 'thing'. It's gross. I know it makes sense, I still hate it.
LESLIE HIGGINS IS EATING HER BISCUIT AND SHE'S SO FOCUSED SHE DIDN'T REALISE!!! wow
Of course Jamie says poopy and not shit
I love how these boys trust Ted so much that they just went into a sewer, then asked why when they were down there
She's gonna break that laptop one day
Jamie being the one to reiterate the lesson they just learnt? Boys growing up!! AND HE'S RHYMING!!
Oooo she's angry 🥵
Rupert is laughing at me, Ted 🥺 ouch
And I am begging you, please, fight back OMFG 😭😭
I love how they highlight how different the press rooms are. They're all friends at Richmond, press included
And the contrast between Nate saying vile stuff and Ted saying encouraging stuff. Beautiful.
I'm kinda surprised though that Rebecca looks worried and doesn't trust him
But of course she's the only one who catches his baseball reference
Did Brett get in a Twin Peaks reference? Good for him!!
They're really highlighting the fact that kindness & comedy win, huh?
Ooo Rupert buying Nathan fancy gifts... so it begins!
Roy & Keeley not saying the same thing is very telling, I think
Firstly, why did it take them 6 weeks to tell Phoebe? And secondly, did they not actually discuss it themselves?Nobody knows what's going on!
Phoebe is so grown up! Asking the important questions
'Can I say a bad word? I think you're being stupid' I love her
Another conversation about why he's still in London? This really is going to be the theme of this season, I guess
Is moving that Lego Nate foreshadowing him coming back???
'Mommy's friend' 👀 uh oh
And that's episode 1 done!! Yes, I probably will be watching it on repeat until next Wednesday, thanks for asking.

My Ted Lasso Re-watch: S1E5 (part 2)
Tan Lines
Baz calling Ted a wanker in front of Michelle and Henry is not something he should have to deal with. It's actually vile how people think it's okay to yell abuse at people who are just trying to do their jobs, and also do it in front of their loved ones. Henry is a kid, he shouldn't have to see his dad yelled at like that.
Will say though, Ted looks awfully cosy in his jumper.
Mae coming in to help and give Henry some darts to play with. She saved the day.
Michelle is trying but it feels so half arsed. She has pretty much checked out of the relationship, despite what she tries to say or do, she just won't admit it yet. She didn't meet Ted half way at training because she doesn't feel that rush of excitement when she sees him anymore. She wants it to be over.
How much force did Henry use to get the dart in Paul's arm? Kid has a good arm if he can do that.
Two things: the first is that I love that Roy has really gotten into reading A Wrinkle In Time to the point where he carries it everywhere he goes. And the second is that he is so clearly jealous of Jamie getting to be around Keeley that he say anything just to talk to her.
Keeley isn't scared of Roy, and isn't afraid of putting him in his place when he's over stepped.
1st Field of Dreams reference, while building a lego bus. Ted wants to be apart of Henry's life, it's just difficult to do in their situation. It's a cute family moment and Michelle does join in, if only for Henry's sake.
Ted lying awake in bed with Henry and Michelle, because this is what he wants. He has missed his family and they've had a seemingly good day together. And it makes him hopeful for the future, which is heartbreaking when you know what comes next.
Okay Ted, honey, you're supposed to put jam and clotted cream on scones. The order in which you do that is up for debate, however, you're not supposed to eat them dry.
Ted and his jar of peanut butter. Is that an ADHD thing, serving as a reminder to eat food?
Ted is all smiles and as soon as he sees Michelle crying his face just drops and goes to comfort her. Except, hearing that your wife is no longer in love with you must hurt more than he can let on because Henry is around and neither of them want show that anything is amiss. Jason shows Ted going through heartbreak very well.
Nate's right, 4,438 miles is a lot of space to give someone.
Beard's opinion on marriage is funny considering his relationship with Jane. He's the one who always goes back to her. And I'm not going to talk about that ending until I get to it.
Nate's dad talking about his height as 0.001 miles tall, could be seen as a nice in joke between father and son, but really when you meet his dad it's kind of condescending.
Michelle and Dr Jacob decided that Ted needed to give her some space. Now, is that because Dr Jacob liked Michelle and wanted to persue her but needed Ted out of the way, or did they come across each other one day, after the divorce, and he just asked her out? Either way, she was a former client, and he had personal info about her from their sessions together, they should not have dated.
Damn, Higgins. That's a good truth bomb right there. In every scene we seen Leslie and Julie together, you can tell that they are still very much in love after all these years.
In the UK the emergency number is 999, but for non-emergency medical needs we also have 111, to help stop people from coming in for minor ailments that could be sorted without a trip to A&E (the ER). Doesn't always help though as I can attest to, unfortunately.
That was the first unofficial meeting of the Diamond Dogs. A chance to give men the opportunity to talk about things in a positive and healthy way. God, I fucking love it.

one more time for those in the back: pls don't say anything abt the shows i watch. lol
now here are some more Thoughts
okay i went back and watched the first episode of s3 and i FULLY agree w ppl theorizing that ted is gonna go back to kansas at some point this season, and then likely return.
the ENTIRE EPISODE was ted being like why the fuck am i here?
and yes it was spurred on bc of henry--but that seems to be sort of his main concern and motivation in general
he had to take henry to the airport, had to worry abt his flight, asking him directly if he knows why ted's still there
he even asked beard and beard didn't fucking answer him which. INTERESTING.
and then of course henry and the bullying thing and ted panicking and wanting to be back there in the latest ep.
also fun detail, while he's in the airport, the--what do you call the. speaker? speaker. whatever.
the person over the speaker in the airport noted that the flight to amsterdam was delayed. 👀 now what does that mean? lol
also rebecca quite literally says in the first episode TO KEELEY that she HAS grown. she used to want to crush everything rupert loved--and now she just wants to beat him.
what did i say abt that revenge body era? lol
it's not perfect but christ, again, it's only been 2 years after a TWELVE YEAR MARRIAGE and he is constantly antagonizing her in public. i'd be still hurt and pissed, too.
other thoughts!
nathan. [stares]
yeah honestly it'll be interesting. there's not much to say that hasn't already been said.
but basically rupert is clearly trying to manipulate and control him into a little mini-me that will win everything for him. the car, the look, the office, ms. kakes, etc.
yes also we get the foreshadowing of the tinted window in keeley's office in this episode.
orgasm for the soul is said in the same place that, undoubtedly, keeley & jack have regular orgasms later on. lol
but also she had to schedule time to cry--and later in these next few eps we see that. well. it seems maybe she has a little more wiggle room if she manages to get caught up w jack, etc. lol
also what is WITH barbara and jack? and barbara in general? less so the second one. but the investor sent her over as the cfo. so i'm. hm.
also keeley not knowing what cfo is, and later not knowing what position to give to shandy, officially.
again, she's not stupid--she just doesn't know the ins and outs bc she wasn't raised in that shit.
also idk it's interesting there's a parallel w keeley and nathan in that they both have a person from their past who's reminding them of where they came from
for nathan, it seems to go well w jade at the restaurant--friends or dating. thematically, makes sense.
for keeley, shandy doesn't work out so great. and i'm REALLY wondering what the final takeaway will be about that relationship and how things fell apart. bc believe me, it's not over.
also obviously leslie saying at the beginning they should look to get new blood--initially ted vetoes the idea. doesn't seem to think they need it.
but he just sort of. rolls over. lets it happen. says you got it, i'll be flying like a butterfly stinging like a bee all season, etc.
and his entire conversation w the doc over the phone that i only half paid attention to the first time bc him trimming his nose hair was. Gross. lol
but he literally says
what if i'm doing more harm than good
what if they'd be better off without me
what if i'm holding them back
she says to him "you don't quit things"
as a literal answer--part of why he's there.
everyone is echoing to him the reasons he's offered for staying. he doesn't quit, it's to win the whole fucking thing (as rebecca AND henry remind him).
so yeah i absolutely agree, i think ted is going to leave.
it will. potentially. break the fucking team. they just love him so much. i have no other thoughts or ideas abt how that would go. but it does feel absolutely certain.
also of course higgins suggesting new blood does also foreshadow him suggesting that ted is actually the problem w the team.
and he IS out of it and FEELS out of it and is just questioning his entire purpose there.
meanwhile jamie is soaring, flying, brilliant colors. he's doing GREAT! he's internalized ted's message and ethos, but with his own style. he cares abt the team. he kept his confidence and sometimes allows his ego out.
BOTH times the team starts getting worried in the locker room, it's JAMIE who calms everyone down.
he's not a mini-ted--but he's a very enlightened little jamie! and i'm proud of him.
also would you believe i forgot until this very moment that jamie has that whole stint on a reality tv show and then has such an attitude problem that no teams and no tv shows and no pr firms even want him anymore? and THAT'S how he ends up back at richmond? i completely fucking forgot until this very moment.
anyway, jamie's doing really well, right off the bat.
ALSO
we get TWO hints abt roy's uncertainty having to fill in for nate's position. "i know i'm not a tactical genius like nate" and then keeley saying "roy i know you're worried abt that but--"
very interesting.
roy is insecure.
he has been since the beginning.
and it often seems the anger overcompensates for that.
and yet in those moments, he doesn't have a lot of anger. he looks at keeley like he's HURT, not angry--bc when is he ever angry at her, anyway?
but like he's HURT that she would try and comfort him. as if to say "really? now?"
which. is interesting. bc she says they're on a break, and he says they've broken up.
and yet--
at the end of season 2. it was roy being a big ol baby that keeley wouldn't take two weeks off for vacation with him, and keeley being like "babe, i have to start my own business. i'm gonna be busy."
like. i guess that's not a "and yet" moment.
that's roy.......realizing how badly he needs so much support and how insecure he is. how much he needs to be someone's priority.
we haven't ever met phoebe's mom, and she says that her parents got divorced when she was four. "one of my core beliefs is that nothing lasts forever"
is roy..........
maybe feeling some of the stuff he imagines phoebe might? he has to be there for her bc her mom is--
way. too busy. for her.
yeah. okay. that makes sense. lol
perhaps he wanted a clean cut. even though they agreed that she could still hang out with keeley. ostensibly....
yeah it's interesting.
what else?
beard and roy bonding is nice.
also the hoosiers reference.
interesting. little details are similar.
i'm just sort of. thinking and wondering. what elements are going to be thematically relevant and compelling throughout this season. bc that seems. deliberate.
ALSO realized that season 1 also included/featured ted's getting ready routine--but it was to get ready for bed, instead. this one is to get ready for work.
[stares]
i've connected the dots
you haven't connected shit
i've connected them
[stares at the empty spot where an answer to 'so what?' should be]
HMM!!!!
anyway.
thinky thoughts.
ALSO idk if it was. intentional or relevant.
when they went to the sewer--also ted says that henry wanted to go in order to face his fears. roy says that's fucking smart.
[squints purposefully]
okay anyway when they go to the sewer, the first players to climb down seem to be plot-relevant for the season, which of course makes sense.
but then isaac is on one far end
and colin is on the other
i think roy and jamie are near each other??? idk
basically i am Paying Attention. lol
okay i think that's everything.

Okay, so I just had a lot of fun sorting all of the Newsies but here’s the story
David and Sarah are twins. They’ve grown up with very normal lives, very good lives. They have a mother who adores them and does her best to spoil them, though she’s a single mother, and a little brother who they love to spoil more than anything else.
On their eighteenth birthday, Sarah is up for a job and David has an interview for law school. It doesn’t exactly go as planned. Sarah runs into some hot chick with tats up and down her whole body and her interviewer claims she’s crazy, while over at David’s interview, everything is going quite well until they see some graphic drawings fall out of his folder. He tries to explain that it’s just for some dumb graphic novel he and his sister wrote as kids, but they tell him they don’t know if he’s serious enough for law school.
Dejected, both of them meet up for coffee with their best friend Specs who tries to cheer them up with fake IDs and biscotti. David and Sarah actually start to feel better before Sarah’s coffee disappears into one of David’s drawings.
They think it’s their imagination.
Later that night, their mother gives them each a gift. A broken stele that was made into two separate ones. A family heirloom she calls it. David and Sarah have no idea what that means but the designs on it are beautiful, similar to David’s drawings, so they hold onto them before they both rush off to hang with their friends at a bar, kissing Les goodnight and leaving.
It’s at this club that they run into some interesting people, all with tattoos running up and down their bodies who have swords and whips and steles and David takes Sarah after all of this happens and they run back to their mother and Medda, their mother’s best friend. Their mother is frantic as Medda informs her that someone named Race called to warn them that The Circle had found her.
Their mother screams at them to get Les as Medda miraculously makes them a portal to go to the police station where their mother’s friend Hot Shot is working. They are told to trust no one else, but when they get there, terrified and crying, they overhear a conversation where Hot Shot tells more of these odd tattooed humans that he doesn’t care about the Jacobs at all. So the twins take their little brother and frantically rush back to their mother who is nowhere to be found only to be attacked by some kind of monster.
They’re barely saved by one of the handsome tattooed people. Sarah is scratched by the mister and passes out.
Jack Kelly is a simple man. Well, actually that’s not true at all. He’s a shadowhunter, born and raised like all the others. He protects the human world from the shadow world. So when him and his team, consisting of his adopted family, track down a demon to find two lost Shadowhunters, things go a little ary. Jack and his family, Katherine and Sean, end up with two lost Shadowhunters in their care and one mundane (human) with them. Jack draws a rune on Sarah’s neck to save her, despite David’s many protests, and he has to explain why these runes are necessary and how they are not tattoos. They give each shadowhunter unique powers.
The shadow world is complicated. All the legends, they’re true. Werewolves, warlocks, vampires, they exist. They are called the downworlders.
Once it’s found out that David and Sarah’s memory had been wiped, they are forced to take them to a young warlock, one by the name of Racetrack Higgins. He’s the high warlock of Brooklyn who was trained by one Medda Larkin and is the most powerful warlock ever to exist. He admits to knowing where the twins' memories are, with a few flirtatious comments towards Sean, and agrees to help them find them.
Things only get worse from there.

Slovenly Creatures.
A Life in Film chat with Letterboxd fave Melanie Lynskey about fart jokes, comfort comedies, foundational film idols and her obsession with Kevin Hart.
“Not all the plot points have to tie together, it doesn’t have to make sense, it doesn’t have to be perfectly sharp. It just has to be funny, that’s all.” —Melanie Lynskey
Search through Letterboxd and you’ll find that New Zealand-born Melanie Lynskey has a special place in the hearts of film lovers. Lists dedicated to “my favorite actress”, “the least-appreciated currently working character actress”, “lovely Melanie Lynskey films”. Reviews that consist mainly of Melanie Lynskey’s name, over and over again. And so it is with her latest film, Lady of the Manor. Reviews of the ghostly, farty buddy-comedy are united on one thing: Melanie Lynskey.
Her secret involves a smart straddling of the indie-mainstream fence, one foot in comedy, the other in drama, and a weathered eye on the politics of her industry. Follow her Twitter account, and you’ll see that Lynskey’s tastes and influences are wide-ranging. She is a hungry devourer of recaps, a staunch ally of the marginalized, and generous with her praise of great work (including those she works with).
But for Letterboxd fans, it is simply about what Lynskey herself brings to every role, whether that be character parts in cult camp like But I’m a Cheerleader and Coyote Ugly, or as a devoted participant in 21st-century indie fare, often involving the Duplass brothers, and often with long, existential titles, or as a rock-solid addition to A-list ensemble adventures such as Up in the Air, The Informant! and Mrs. America.
Tumblr media
Melanie Lynskey sparks up in ‘Lady of the Manor’.
“I have said it before and I will keep saying it until I lose my figurative online voice,” writes Lynskey stan Fred, “Melanie Lynskey is one of the best working actors and Hollywood needs to catch up yesterday.” She has been serving lesbians since her 1994 break-out in Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures. She is the Queen of Indie. She is a gift. She can do no wrong. She is our spirit animal.
For Lynsksessives, a new Melanie Lynskey season is upon us. A Showtime series, Yellowjackets, in November. In December, she will be seen in Adam McKay’s starry new astronomy caper, Don’t Look Up. And right now, those hunting for a charming indie comedy led by our favorite goofball need look no further than Lady of the Manor, from brothers Justin and Christian Long.
“I wanted ghost Judy Greer interacting with stoner Melanie Lynskey and I got ghost Judy Greer interacting with stoner Melanie Lynskey,” writes Owen, of the supernatural buddy comedy in which hot mess Hannah (Lynskey) is haunted by prim and proper (and probably murdered) Lady Wadsworth (Greer), while trying to hold down a job as a tour guide at Wadsworth Manor.
In order to help Greer’s uptight apparition find peace, Hannah must solve the mystery of the manor’s ownership. That, however, requires her to overcome an extreme lack of ambition, terrible personal hygiene, and sleazy advances from a toxic and horny Ryan Philippe. Angela Alise and Luis Guzmán pop up in somewhat underwritten supporting roles, but Lady of the Manor is, above all, a buffet of physical comedy delights for Lynskey lovers.
Letterboxd editor-in-chief Gemma Gracewood jumped on the line with Lynskey for a laugh and a cry about David Lynch movies, the late Katrin Cartlidge, teen obsessions, and being a responsible Academy voter.
Tumblr media
Lady Wadsworth (Judy Greer) serves some manners to her re-enacting dopplegänger, Hannah (Melanie Lynskey).
Lady of the Manor feels like a Pygmalion situation, you know? My Fair Lady, but you are Eliza Doolittle and Judy Greer is Professor Henry Higgins, and the transformation is actually not that huge: Hannah goes from this complete stoner to still a complete stoner, but maybe with a few additional life goals. Melanie Lynskey: That was the thing that really sold me on the movie, honestly, was that she just didn’t really change that much. The moment that I was, like, ‘I’m going to do this movie’ was when she’s all inspired—“I’m going to return the house to its rightful owner”—and she marches off purposefully, and then it cuts to her at the bar and she’s just wasted again. It was so funny to me. ‘Oh wow, they’re really letting her be a mess. They’re not trying to redeem this person.’
You and Judy Greer have an insane chemistry. Can you share some insights into that working partnership? It was so much fun. We’ve never gotten to work together, because it’s always: she’s doing the role, or I’m doing the role, or Kathryn Hahn is doing the role. There’s usually one part that’s right for us in a movie, and so, to have two different roles that are right for both of us, it was such a dream.
A lot of it is on the page, because Justin and Christian worked so hard on the script, and it was at a point that they were really, really happy with it, and they were very fond of a lot of the jokes. We did get to add little things here and there. We got a lot of freedom and a lot of room to improv.
Who is the best movie ghost, apart from Judy Greer? All I can think of is Ghost. Oh, Beetlejuice. There you go. That’s an amazing ghost, that’s a great movie.
What else should we watch Judy Greer in? Who can name only one favorite Judy Greer performance?! She’s so incredible! The ones that come to mind are Adaptation, The TV Set, Jeff Who Lives At Home and Three Kings. She is a marvel—beautiful, funny, kind, smart, an amazing improviser and a great friend.
What is the film that first made you aware that filmmaking is something you could do, as opposed to watch? I don’t really know what film made me aware of what filmmaking was! I always knew I wanted to be an actor, since I was about six years old and did a school play. I didn’t really watch a ton of movies as a kid. My parents were not really movie-goers. When I was about thirteen I started watching Twin Peaks, and from there I saw Blue Velvet and Wild At Heart, and that was the beginning of me realizing what kind of work really excited and interested me. So for 30 years now, I’ve had a dream of working with David Lynch.
And I started to try to watch everything that certain actors did. I got very obsessed with Katrin Cartlidge, who became my favorite actor. I loved her in Mike Leigh’s Naked and Career Girls, in Lars Von Trier’s Breaking The Waves, Lodge Kerrigan’s Claire Dolan and Milcho Manchevski’s Before The Rain. Through following Katrin’s career I started to piece together what I wanted my own to look like. She made incredible choices and was just so different and so good in every performance.
I was lucky enough to work with her before she passed; we did a movie of The Cherry Orchard and worked together for three months. I will cherish those memories forever. She was maybe an even more amazing person than she was an actor, and that is really saying something.
Tumblr media
A publicity still from ‘The Three Musketeers’ (1993) with Oliver Platt, rear left, as Porthos.
What was the first film that gave you teenage feelings? Well, I was a bit of a goth as a teenager. When I saw Alison Maclean’s short film Kitchen Sink, that was a big moment for me. I was like, wow. If I could make a movie that would express my soul at this moment, it would be this film. And I have loved all her movies since that one. The Rehearsal was so good! And Jesus’ Son. I keep hoping I’ll get to work with her.
As a teen I was very swoony over Oliver Platt. He was my number one crush. So any Oliver Platt film had me feeling some things—Flatliners and The Three Musketeers, especially. I’m still swoony over him today, to be honest.
What is the next hidden gem that you think Letterboxd members should watch? My two favorite movies in recent memory are Shannon Murphy’s Babyteeth and Remi Weekes’ His House. Eliza Scanlen is absolutely glorious in the former. It’s a really deep and beautiful performance. Her parents are played by the incomparable Ben Mendelsohn and Essie Davis, both of whom destroyed me. The whole movie destroyed me. But my favorite performance in the movie comes from Toby Wallace, as the young-but-older love interest of Eliza Scanlen’s character. My god, this is an electric performance. He’s unbelievably good in it. Emily Barclay is great in it too. The movie is funny, heartbreaking and beautifully directed. The music is amazing.
And His House is just great. A really creepy, twisty thriller with a very tragic story at its center. It’s about a refugee couple who have escaped from South Sudan and are moved into housing in England, and the house is torturing them. It’s the most compelling movie I’ve seen in such a long time. The two leads, Wunmi Mosaku and Sope Dirisu, are flat out movie stars. You can’t take your eyes off either of them and the performances resonate on a thousand different levels. They’re astounding, and it’s incredibly accomplished filmmaking. Please please see these movies.
Because you’re from New Zealand, we’d be remiss not to ask what’s a must-see New Zealand film in your opinion? If we’re talking about silly, fun comedies, and also women being funny and silly, I really love The Breaker Upperers. That was very, very, very charming and hilarious to me. I hope that more people see that.
Tumblr media
Katharine Towne, Clea DuVall, Melanie Lynskey and Natasha Lyonne in ‘But I’m a Cheerleader’ (2000).
For anyone still sleeping on Letterboxd favorite But I’m a Cheerleader, in one sentence, why should they watch it? Oh, because it’s a campy romance with an amazing cast. It’s Clea DuVall and Natasha Lyonne falling in love with each other, it’s sexy, it’s sweet, it’s genuinely funny. It’s beautiful to look at. That’s not one sentence, that’s about twelve sentences, sorry. I’m so proud of that movie, I love that movie so much.
It’s an interesting one. It’s been growing in stature around here over the years, and I love to see it. Yeah, very much. The reviews were outright negative when it came out.
What was the last film that made you cry, either because it was so sad, or because you were cry-laughing, or any definition of tears being shed? Mm, gosh, the last film that made me cry… Oh, do you know what? I really cried at the end of Another Round, where he’s dancing.
That ending. I’m going to cry. Sorry, it really got me. And also knowing what Thomas Vinterberg had been through, just the joy that was in that moment, the idea that you can just go through all this, and still have these moments of joy, and return to this person that you were before all this life happened to you. Just the purity of that moment really, really got me.
And not to mention just the sheer joy of Mads Mikkelsen dancing. Yeah, god, just the beauty of that man in that moment and, ugh, god, what a great movie.
What mindfuck movie changed you for life? It would probably be La Cérémonie. I had kind of a one-two punch of being introduced to Isabelle Huppert with La Cérémonie and Amateur, and it’s been true love ever since. I was like, who is this and what else can I see her in immediately??
I don’t know if La Cérémonie is a mindfuck but it’s definitely very dark and it gets really crazy! Sandrine Bonnaire is amazing in it too. But the first time I got to see the incredible intensity and commitment of Isabelle Huppert is really a moment I’ll never forget. It feels like there is a before and after for me.
Finally, some Letterboxd members have described the joy Lady of the Manor has brought them in the midst of an ongoing pandemic. As Robert writes, “I’ll watch Melanie and Judy ham it up for an hour and a half, and be fine with that. Some of the lame jokes in this have made me laugh harder than most films I’ve seen this year.” When it comes to the role of comedy in a crisis, what are the cozy, comfort re-watches that have kept you going through the pandemic? Aw. I have a toddler, so we’re not watching too many movies. Around the time of the Academy Awards, I really buckled down, because I wanted to be a responsible voter, and I tried to watch everything. So, that was the most movies that I’ve done in a concentrated period of time, but none of that was really “comfort” feeling.
The movies that I do return to, when I feel like I have time to just chill out: Wet Hot American Summer is a big comedy movie for me. Justin did this really weird movie called Strange Wilderness with Steve Zahn and Jonah Hill years ago that is so weird and funny, I really love that one. All the Christopher Guests, like Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, those are my go to.
And then Kevin Hart. I’m a big, big, big Kevin Hart fan. There are times I’ll be on a plane and I’ll think, “Oh, I should really watch this movie that I’ve been meaning to watch.” But if there’s a Kevin Hart movie, no chance, that’s what I’m going to watch. I’ll go to the movie theater opening weekend to see a Kevin Hart movie. Kevin Hart right now is making a movie with Regina Hall. I’ve seen it on their Instagrams, and I’ve never been more excited for a film.
What is it about Kevin Hart for you? He is a comedic genius. He is absolutely brilliant, and he will do something in almost every scene that surprises me, and it’s crazy. He can be doing something that’s a real rote, by-the-numbers movie—they’re not all masterpieces—but he makes it new, and interesting, and surprising. Nobody reacts better than Kevin Hart, he is such a funny reactor. He’s always in the moment, I think he makes other people funnier and better. I’m obsessed, I love him.
It’s reassuring to hear you say “they’re not all masterpieces”, because I think comedy is so hard. It is so hard to reach for a five-star comedy, but the truth is that we’re all happy in a sort of three-star comedy world. Those are the films we return to again and again. Of course! Yeah, and that’s all you’re hoping for with, especially, a silly comedy. You just hope that there’s enough moments that people laugh, and feel like they’ve got a good laugh, and they’ve relaxed for a while. Not all the plot points have to tie together, it doesn’t have to make sense, it doesn’t have to be perfectly sharp. It just has to be funny, that’s all.
Tumblr media
Lynskey, as Hannah, with ‘Lady of the Manor’ director and co-writer Justin Long as Max, her academic love interest.
On that note, the Long brothers call this “a fartwarming comedy”, and several Letterboxd reviews comment on Lady of the Manor having “the single best fart joke in ages” or “just the right amount of fart jokes”. Why are farts so funny, Melanie Lynskey? Do you know what? I don’t find them funny at all, I really don’t. I’m a little bit prissy and there are things in this movie where I was like, “You’re just going to have to tell me exactly what to do.” Like the farting in the room, and burps and stuff like that, I’m not good at that stuff, but people think it’s funny. I don’t know. It’s kind of beyond me…
Wow, so you really exercised your acting muscles on this. Exactly, exactly, it’s the greatest performance of my life!

Keeping Secrets
Rick x Reader
Trigger Warning: Abuse, Death, Reproductive Abuse, Guns.
Magnum walked into the bar, having just come from a meeting with a potential client. A man from the mainland was looking for his wife, who had come to Hawaii on a girls trip and never came home. The client didn’t have much information, other than her friends had shared that she had gone on a hike and never returned. The woman in the photo he was given looked familiar, he just couldn’t place where he knew her from.
He sat in front of Rick, who was smiling down at his phone. “What are you smiling at?” He asked, trying to get a look at his phone.
Rick pulled away, locking his phone in the process. “Nothing.” He slipped the phone into his pocket, “how was the meeting with the potential client?”
Magnum sat his own phone on the bar, “It was fine. Just a man looking for his wife, who disappeared while on a girls trip.” He pulled up the photo and turned it towards Rick. “Does she look familiar to you? I feel like I know her from somewhere.”
Rick nearly dropped the glass he had been cleaning. There on Magnum’s phone was a Y/H/C version of his girlfriend, Y/N. He almost didn’t recognize her, because the aesthetic of the girl in the photo was completely different. “You are right, she does look familiar.” His voice was tense, “she looks like every other mainland girl that comes to Hawaii on vacation.” He tried to joke.
Magnum chuckled, taking his phone back. “She is actually from Europe, or at least that is what the husband said. So, I am going back to Robin’s nest and have Higgin’s to help with a background check.”
Rick nodded, tossing his drying rag over his shoulder, “Hopefully you find something that helps!” Rick waved goodbye as Magnum left.
Rick’s POV…
Rick sat in his car, watching as Y/N moved around her bakery to help customers. A part of him didn’t want to believe that she had been lying to him about everything, but the other half knew something was going on. He waited until the last customer left, before heading inside to talk with her.
She was going over some recipes at the counter as he walked in. She glanced up and smiled, “Hey, Rick. What brings you to my side of town?”
He locked the door, flipping the open sign to closed. “I think we need to talk.”
Y/N’s POV…
She led him back to her office, carrying two giant cinnamon rolls. She didn’t know what he wanted to talk about, so she was bringing his favorite treats with them. The look on his face had worry boiling up in her stomach. “What did you want to talk about, Rick?” She asked, sitting down on the little loveseat that she had tucked away.
He sighed, sitting down next to her. “Are you married?” He blurted, which caused her to freeze.
Y/N looked down at her hands, trying to keep her hands from shaking. “Rick…” She whispered, not knowing where to start.
He looked away from her, pain radiating through his chest. “You are, aren’t you?”
She shook her head no. “I am not, I promise. It is a long, complicated story. If you want to know the truth, you’ll have to promise to be patient with me.” She turned to face him completely, crossing her legs so that she wasn’t twisting her body around.
He nodded, wanting to hear her side of the story. “Okay, I promise.”
She nodded absentmindedly. “I am going to grab a bottle of water, would you like a bottle?” She asked, silently needing a minute. She leaned against the wall, trying to catch her breath. She didn’t know how Rick found out about Henry, but he knows now and needs answers.
She cleared her throat, biting back the tears. Y/N and Henry’s story was written like a Stephen King novel, dark and twisted. She knew that Rick wasn’t one to judge her, but the demons in the back of her mind were telling her differently. She grabbed a bottle of water from the employee fridge and made her way back to her office. Rick was gripping his phone, visibly tense.
She returned to her spot next to him. “Henry and I met at University. We dated for around a year and it was great for the most part, he would complain about me hanging out with my mates and not him but it always seemed like a joke.” Y/N had to look away from Rick, noticing that his face grew red. “I know, red flag but I was young and dumb. We moved in together shortly after our one year anniversary, and that is when things went from great to horrid.”
Rick gripped his thighs, knowing where she was going with this story. “You don’t have to finish. I think that I know where this is going, and I don’t want you to have to relive that trauma.”
Y/N released a shaky breath, “I think I have to finish or I will never completely heal.”
He reached over and laced his fingers with hers. “If at any time you want to stop or need a break, give my hand a squeeze.”
She nodded, giving his hand a light squeeze. “It started with him calling me names, then he started to keep me from seeing my friends and family. He was isolating me from any support system that I had, so that I would depend solely on him.” Rick held out her water to her with his free hand, making her pause to take a sip. “Thank you. After he was able to strip me of my support system, he began physically abusing me. He nearly killed me a couple of times, but I still couldn’t leave him.”
Rick had to squeeze her hand, knowing that he was going to lose it if they didn’t stop. “I don’t think that I need to hear anymore.”
She shook head, not wanting to stop. “I need to get this off my chest, Rick. The physical abuse wasn’t even the worst part.” Tears were now falling freely down her face. “He had decided that he was ready to be a father, so he stopped using protection. He would demand sex from me multiple times a day, even pulling me away from my job to do it.”
Rick stood up and began to pace. “I want to murder him, I haven’t even met this asshole.”
Y/N couldn’t help but chuckle. “I am sure that you will be meeting him soon, considering that you asked about him.”
He shot her a look, “Oh, yeah, Magnum had a meeting with a new client and said client had given him a picture of a woman that looked like you, but with Y/H/C.”
“When I was finally able to get away from him, I changed my name and dyed my hair. And since I have dual citizenship, due to my father being American. I didn’t tell my family that I was moving until I landed here in Hawaii, then I shared with my family what had been going on. And they did not take it well.. Like at all.” She chuckled, remembering how her father was going to hunt Henry down and torture him. “Henry disappeared shortly after I did, so my family couldn’t return the favor.”
Rick stopped his pacing, turning to her. “Well, we will be returning the favor today.” He pulled her up from the couch. “I am going to call Magnum and fill him in, but I am not going to let him get away with terrorizing you.”
Robin’s Nest…
Y/N stood on the beach, watching as the water ran over her feet. Rick had called Magnum and Higgins to explain everything that Y/N had told him, only withholding the fact that he had tried to reproductively abuse her (yes, that is a thing). Juliet suggested that Y/N take some time to breath and calm down, which is what led her to the beach. Zeus and Apollo had followed after her, to stand watch over her. She knew Rick, Juliet, and Magnum were making plans to repay Henry for all the pain he caused-- which she was silently okay with. She was glad that Higgins had sent her outside, because she knew that she couldn’t face him.
Y/N had moved to sit in the sand, letting Zeus and Apollo lay on either side of her. Zeus laid his head in her lap, which caused her to stroke his head absentmindedly. “You boys are such a comfort.” Y/N whispered, a calm feeling fell over her.
“I am surprised, love. You were never a fan of dogs back home.” A masculine voice from the past stated, a smirk evident in his voice.
Y/N frozen, which caused Zeus and Apollo to stand up and growl. “How did you find me, Henry?” She asked, not looking away from the water.
Henry took a step forward, only to take a step back as Zeus took a step forward. “Well, that is a secret.” he pulled a gun from his waistband. “But I can say that it wasn’t without a lot of leg work.”
She tensed, knowing from the intense growling coming from Zeus and Apollo that he was aiming a weapon at her. “You think I didn’t know what you did for work, Henry.” She hissed, finally looking at him. “I am not dense, Henry. You were an intelligence agent with MI-6.”
He smirked, “so you know that I can kill you and make it look like a hiking accident.” He flipped off the safety, ready to end her life.
She smirked, “Not likely.”
He shot her a confused look, “what do you mean?” She didn’t have to say anything, because of a bullet taking his life-- which caused her to squeeze her eyes shut. Henry’s body hit the sand with a light thud, which told her that he was never going to hurt her.
Rick ran to her, wanting to make sure that Henry hadn’t been able to hurt her. He had to tell the dogs that he wasn’t going to harm her, because they were still standing at attention to protect her. Once he was able to get to her, Rick wrapped his arms around her-- pulling her to his chest.
“He’s gone, Y/N. And he is never coming back.” He whispered, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
“Oh, god.” She sobbed, clinging on to him. “I don’t believe it, Rick. I really don’t.” She looked up at him, cheeks red from crying. “I am free, Rick.”
He grinned, “Yes, you are.”
She leaned up and pressed a kiss to his lips, wanting to express how happy she felt.
Magnum and Juliet watched on as they shared their little kiss, happy to see their friends happy together.

Dear Trick or Treat Author
Dear Trick or Treat Author,
[WIP: 23:50 BST 19/09/21]
What a wonderful time of year! (Or is that Yuletime? Nearly there too!)
Hello! I am very easily pleased so please take this as a starting point if you need some ideas but otherwise write what makes you happy! I know horror tropes/genre are in my dislikes but if you want to write a scary trick, you do that, yes please! Just play within the canonical world (werewolves in Milton-Northern, vampires at Thornfield, ghosts at the White House) and I'll be a happy reader (but please still stay aware from my gore-related DNWs!).
My normal ramble about what I enjoy in fic isn't really relevant to a 300+ word exchange but you can find it in past letters, click the letter tag.
That said, things missing from my main signup include these:
Loves: exploration of power imbalances Likes: epistolary
My fandoms are in alphabetical order (ish), so here we go!
1.      16th Century CE RPF
Anne Boleyn Anne of Cleves Catherine of Aragon Catherine Parr Elizabeth I of England Henry VIII of England Margaret Pole Countess of Salisbury Robert Dudley 1st Earl of Leicester Thomas Seymour (1508 – 1549)
I've been on a bit of a Philippa Gregory kick this summer reading the Cousins' War series out of order. I'd love more stories about these figures – with some of them (Henry VIII in particular!) it's pretty easy to lean into the trick side of things, but there's treat potential too. Add more characters if you want; I've been reading histories and historical novels on this period for many, many years so if you drop in Maria de Salinas or Stephen Fisher or Kat Ashley or Thomas Cromwell or anyone I'm up for that, but I am also a laidback reader and this is a low-stress exchange, don't tie yourself in knots over accuracy. (Although I would, and I'd definitely recommend Ruth Goodman's How to be a Tudor if you haven't read it, even if you're not normally a non-fiction reader.)
What if [any utterly disastrous thing] didn't happen, or perhaps was somehow worse? Did Elizabeth and Dudley actually have some happiness in a romance, however brief? How did Anne of Cleves feel to retire as the King's beloved sister? What was Margaret Pole thinking on the morning of her execution? Is Henry VIII haunted by the ghosts of some of those he killed: friends and lovers and family? Did anything actually happen between Elizabeth I and Thomas Seymour (There's historical room for a secret pregnancy in the country…)
2.      Downton Abbey
Mary Crawley Edith Crawley Sybil Crawley Matthew Crawley Tom Branson Robert Crawley Cora Crawley Violet Crawley Isobel Crawley Lavinia Swire Anna Bates Evelyn Napier Freda Dudley Ward Marigold Crawley George Crawley Ship: Tom Branson/Sybil Crawley
This is like my TV comfort blanket. I rewatched it this year and I am interested in just about every main character except, oddly, Thomas – who is the favourite fic character of most writers! Give me a missing moment, a look at the future, a glance at the past, a look from the outside – whatever. Any point in, before or after canon is cool with me, except I tend to skim a lot of S4 (ugh, that rape storyline, please don’t use that).
Do ghosts walk the halls of Downton Abbey? What is life like in Ireland for Tom and Sybil? Do any of the characters ever feel a moment of true despair? What if Matthew had died in the war? What does the future hold for these characters? How did Robert, Cora and Violet get on in the 1890s? What was Carson like with Mary/Edith/Sybil as children? Does it parallel his relationship with their children?
3.      The Good Place
Eleanor Shellstrop Chidi Anagonye Tahani Al-Jamil Jason Mendoza Michael Janet
This is another show I can watch over and over and over. I think Chidi's my favourite but it's hard to be sure. I can tell you I absolutely sobbed during the S3 finale and I was a wreck for the S4 finale. Tug my heartstrings, make me laugh, make me cry, I don't care! I've studied philosophy and despised it so I'll take or leave what you include on that score, I just love the characters. Please include any or all other characters you'd like, but I definitely ship Eleanor/Chidi over Chidi/Simone! Although I'll take angst in that direction too! I don't know, I feel like a kid in a candy store writing this letter: hyper and having trouble deciding between all the possible wonders!
Existential dread? Moments from their human lives? Moments from the good place? Please tell me more about the time knife. Does Michael return to the good place when he dies? Does he reunite with Janet and/or Tahani?
4.      Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre Edward Rochester Adele Varens Ship: Jane Eyre/Edward Rochester
This is my favourite classic novel, I reread it every couple of years, most recently in 2020 for Yuletide. My reading of it changes each time, and I increasingly believe that Rochester is more bad guy than good guy and that Jane Eyre lies as a narrator and is as prejudiced and superior as those she crititcises for the same qualities. But I still love her, and that she says she got a happy ending.
Is Rochester more of a villain? How? How does Adele find school, either the one Rochester sends her to, or the one Jane moves her to? Post-canon happiness? Post-canon unhappiness? A scene from the engagement? A missing moment between the non-wedding and Jane running away? What if the wedding wasn't interrupted? (Full disclosure: I'm writing this too.) Canon divergence for, well, anything? Is Adele separated from Sophie? How does that go, how does she manage?
5.      Memoirs of a Geisha
Nitta Sayuri Mameha Nobu Toshikazu Ship: Nitta Sayuri/Nobu Toshikazu Ship: Mameha/Matsunaga Tsuneyoshi | The Baron
6.      North and South
Margaret Hale John Thornton Hannah Thornton Bessy Higgins Ship: Margaret Hale/John Thornton
7.      Stardew Valley
Female Player Sebastian Shane Harvey Robin Elliott Leah Marlon Ship: Shane/Female Player Ship: Sebastian/Female Player Ship: Lewis/Marnie
Do Sebastian and the farmer go on any more bike rides? How did Lewis and Marnie’s relationship start? Are they ever found out? Why does Lewis want to keep it secret? Why is he such an arsehole to Marnie? Tales of the purple shorts. Tell me more about Harvey’s nerdy hobbies or fear of heights? What happened with Robin and Sebastian’s dad? The horrors of the mines, or the skull cavern? Is Leah frightened by the things that go bump in the night near her home? Is Elliott? Some angst or h/c around a wounded farmer, being found/nursed? Or how about some angst/horror in which... they’re not? Fics about the war with the Gotoro Empire?
8.      Star Trek: Voyager
Kathryn Janeway Chakotay Tuvok Kes Seven of Nine Naomi Wildman
I’ve been a J/C shipper since before I knew shipping was a thing (as a kid, I had all the two-parters, S5&6, and Resolutions on video. Pre-internet, how did I even know which episode Resolutions one? Shippy magic instinct, I guess?) So apart from that ship, or canonical relationships, I would prefer genfic please. I also don’t mind the other Voyager characters so they’re welcome to make an appearance, but these are the ones that interest me.
9.      The West Wing
CJ Cregg Josh Lyman Sam Seaborn Abbey Bartlet Charlie Young Donna Moss Jed Bartlet Leo McGarry Toby Ziegler Zoey Bartlet
Happy writing!

CW: Mild injury (you don’t actually see someone get hurt), Swearing
Race froze. Inhaled sharply. What? There’s- there’s no way, he must’ve misheard. His ears were just playing tricks on him.
“Spot’s in the refuge?” His voice broke. Tears stung his eyes.
Flicker, upon seeing Race’s reaction, seemed like he’d rather be anywhere but there. “Yeah,” he winced, “but you can’t go spreading it around, I wasn’t supposed to tell you in the first place.”
The words swam around Race’s head, he barely heard a thing after Flicker confirmed one of his worst nightmares. Spot was in the refuge. Spot could be hurt. Bad. Race had had no idea. Race had been upset with Spot for something that wasn’t his fault. That was an idea that was going to hurt later. Hell, that hurt now. Spot hadn’t forgotten or wanted to break up with Race. That idea hurt a lot less.  So that’s what he chose to focus on.
Race shook himself from his thoughts, this was fixable. This wasn’t a fucktangular mess of emotions, this was a tangible problem that had a solution. A solution that didn’t involve breaking up with Spot and breaking his own heart in the process, People could be busted out of the refuge. Jack had done it before and so had some of the other boys. They could do the same for Spot. Hopefully. “What are you doing to get him out?” Race demanded.
“What?”
“What are you doing to break him out of the Refuge? Manhattan-” Wait, maybe he shouldn’t promise all of Manhattan’s help without first asking them, “-I can help.”
“We’ve tried a few things but none ‘ave worked so far.”
“Let me talk to Hotshot then.”
Flicker hesitated before nodding and opening the door to allow Race inside. He gestured for Race to stay in the entrance while he left to go track down Brooklyn’s second.
When Hotshot arrived, dragged along by a very determined red-head, he took one look at Race before turning to Flicker in exasperation.
“You told him?”
Flicker spluttered. “Nevermind, we’ll discuss that later, for now,” Hotshot turned to Race, “Brooklyn can handle itself.”
“I didn’t say you couldn’t, wouldn’t I, of all people know that? I just wanna get Spot out as soon as possible.”
Hotshot gave Race an appraising look. “Well, what’ve you got then?”
“Let me talk to my boys and I’ll be back by tomorrow noon with a plan.” Race didn’t know how he’d kept his composure this long. He desperately wanted to cry, the unfairness of it all tore his insides to shreds. But he had spent enough time wallowing in pain, admittedly a different pain, but it was time that could have been used helping Spot so Race was going to hit the ground running. Who knew what had happened to Spot since he’d been locked up?
Hotshot glanced around, taking in some of the reactions of some of his fellow newsies before deciding. “All right Higgins. Talk to Manhattan and see what you can come up with.”
Race nodded. Then he turned and nearly sprinted out the door. Oh, he was going to Manhattan alright, but he had somewhere more important to visit first.
---
Race was out of breath by the time he arrived at the Refuge. Running a frankly unreasonable distance and fast as one could tended to do that to you. He took a second to catch his breath and formulate his plan of how to get to the window and get Spot’s attention. His thoughts on the way there had been nothing but a constant stream of Spot Spot Spot and he hadn’t been able to think of less important things, like how he was actually going to get Spot’s attention and talk to him, or how he was going to avoid getting caught.
He eventually comes to the conclusion that he could probably climb the drain pipe and perch on the small ledge of the window and use either the pipe or the metal bars for balance. Yeah, that’d work. And with both things to hold on to he wouldn’t fall. Hopefully. So that’s what he did.
Race waited until the coast was relatively clear and shimmied up the pipe closest to a bunk room, it was harder to keep a grip on than he expected but he made it without falling. The creak the drain let out as he partially swung himself to the ledge was concerning, but again, nothing came of it.
Once precariously balanced on the ledge and clinging to the bars, he did his best to get someone’s attention. The boy who noticed him looked to be no older than Les. It made Race’s anger simmer beneath his skin and his grip tightened around the cool metal. He hated this place, no one deserved to be here, especially kids that young. He knew from experience. Race quietly asked the boy to find Spot and bring him there, and wished he had the forethought to bring food or something, both for Spot and the other children who clearly needed it.
Race quickly glanced around the street below, trying to gauge if anyone had noticed him. Thankfully he still seemed to be under (or in the case, over) the radar. He kept scanning until he was ripped from his thoughts.
“Racer?”
Race whipped around to find none other than Spot Conlon. He tried to check over as much of the boy as possible, he looked a little worse for wear, but the Refuge would do that to anyone, and Race couldn’t see any clear injuries besides a bruise or two from where he crouched. “Spot,” Race breathed out, relief overtaking him.
“Racer what’re you doin’ here? You’se could get in real trouble.” Spot was clearly concerned. His eyebrows furrowed in confusion, “And how d’you know I was here in the first place?”
“Your boys gave you up, Conlon.” Race’s attempt to be lighthearted found moderate success. “‘Sides, they probably knew I’d tear the whole city apart lookin’ for ya if they didn’t. I was pretty upset when I got down there.”
Race removed one hand from the bars to scratch the back of his neck, then popped his fingers against his jaw.
Spot winced. “I thought I’d be out a bit sooner than this an’ I didn’t want you to worry.”
Race met his eyes, for all the world looking like a broken boy, “There’s a lot worse things to be than worried, Spot.” They both looked away, Race to the street once again. Neither spoke for a minute, until Race broke the silence.
“So, how’d you wind up in here anyways?” He still didn’t look at Spot.
“One a’ my kids picked the wrong pocket and had a run in wit’ the bulls. I had to intervene and give him an opportunity to run, but by the time he was gone I wasn’t quite in good enough shape to get away myself.”
Race turned back and looked Spot in the eyes. He was remorseful. “‘M sorry about our date, by the way. Promise I’ll make it up to you once I’m out.”
Race’s chest felt tight at that. Spot really did care. And Race was going to break him out no matter what.
Suddenly a door bangs somewhere behind Spot. He glanced behind himself, panicked, before turning back to Race. “You gotta get outta here ‘fore Snyder sees ya. We’ll see eachother soon.”
Spot shut the window.
Race managed to maneuver his way back over to the drain pipe and slide down without getting anyone’s attention. Now he just had to get back to the lodging house and let everyone know what was going on. Race thought back to the young boy who he’d seen earlier. Maybe Spot wasn’t the only one they would help.
They’d see eachother sooner than Spot thought, though, Race would make sure of that.
---
Race burst through the lodging house door, gasping for breath. He really needed to learn to take his time getting to places. Most of the boys looked up from where they were lounging around. Finch, Specs, Elmer, and Romeo were all having a discussion by the window while Mike, Ike, Blink, Henry, and Albert played some card game on the floor while a few other boys watched. Jack and Davey were huddled in a corner talking in hushed tones.
“We need to plan a heist!”
Just about everyone rolled their eyes and went back to what they were doing, Albert included. Race was a little offended.
“And what might this heist be for?” Romeo inquired. Race knew there was a reason he was his favorite.
Race was glad someone enjoyed his theatrics. “The prize being my boyfriend, and if possible, as many other kids in the refuge as we can!”
That got the room's attention. “Wait what?” Jack sputtered.
“Spot’s in the Refuge and we need to get him out, and I figured why not bust everyone else out as well. They can’t stop all of us.”
“Woah, back up a second,” Albert said, “Spot’s in the Refuge?”
Race met his eyes guiltily. “Yeah, an’ I’m not leaving him there to rot, or any of those other kids, so I’m bustin’ them out, whether you guys are with me or not. It’d be a lot easier if you were with me though.”
Race was determined. He remembered his time in the Refuge and he’s sure the other newsies did too. He wouldn’t blame them if they didn’t want to risk getting caught or bringing up old memories. It was why he hadn’t gone there since he was released, at least until today that was. But those old memories only fueled his determination. He’d hidden from the place of his nightmares for so long, as many did, but in the process allowed it to continue to hurt innocent kids. Kids like him. Spot’s imprisonment was the kick in the pants he needed. That ended tomorrow.
Everyone could see the fire in Race’s eyes.
“That’s a stupid idea Racer, a jailbreak? Really?” Romeo piped up.
“You’re one ta talk,” Finch scoffed.
Race glanced around the room. Most of the boys seemed hesitant. But hesitation was not a ‘no’ and he could work with that. He looked to Jack.
“Whaddaya say Jack?”
Jack was conflicted. “‘F you got a plan Racer, I’ll listen.”
And that was all he needed.
Race explained the basics of his idea to everyone, taking input from those who had it (Jack, Davey, Specs, and Finch) and ignoring the heckling and jokes from those who had them (Mike, Ike, and Romeo). In the end, Jack, Albert, Finch, and Kid Blink agreed to help him with the plan. They spent the next few hours strategizing and hammering out the details until Kloppman came and sent them all to bed.
---
Race got ready for bed, nervous for the coming day. This was a huge risk and one thing going wrong could end poorly for so many people. He lied awake, running through every possible scenario of how this could go wrong.
“I kinda feel like I owe Spot an apology. I know I didn’t do anything to him, but still…” Albert’s voice came from the bed below.
The sick feeling from earlier returned full force. The guilt wracked his body. Race had been so mad at Spot. He’d been willing to break up with him over this. Over something that wasn’t his fault. If only Race had known, he could've- he could’ve-
“Racer I can hear ya thinkin’ a mile a minute, come down here an’ talk to me.”
Race climbed down the ladder and into Albert’s bunk, immediately wrapping his arms around his friend and burying his head in his chest. He was shaking.
“I was so upset with him,” Race said shakily. Albert took a deep breath and started running his fingers through Race’s hair in a calming gesture.
“And you thought he was ignoring you, I’d be more concerned if you weren’t upset.”
Race sniffled. “You don’t get it, I- I was ready to…” Race trailed off. “But it wasn’t his fault.”
“Well how were you supposed to know that?”
Race gave Albert an inquisitive glance. He continued, “I mean, you had no way of knowing he was in the Refuge and the Brooklyn newsies certainly weren’t forthcoming with information. You were right to be upset given the circumstances. Hell, I was upset on your behalf. But now we know better and aren’t mad anymore. This whole thing is a mess but it isn’t really anyone’s fault and you just have to accept that.”
Huh, Race forgot that Albert could be pretty smart when he wanted to be. He’s suddenly very glad that Albert and him are friends, he doesn’t know what he would do without him. He should also work on remembering that Al is a good friend and that isn’t something to take for granted.
“You’re my best friend Albie,” Race said snuggling closer to the other boy.
Albert snorted. “Don’t I know it, no one else would put up with your needy ass. But you’re my best friend to Racer.”
Race drifted to sleep, more confident in himself and ever grateful for his best friend. They’d get Spot out tomorrow no matter what, even if it was just him and Albert, because Albert always had his back, and together? Together, Race believed, they could do just about anything.
---
The next day everyone was jittery while at distribution. Trying not to seem suspicious but not exactly succeeding. Those who were helping in what Race had dubbed ‘The Heist’ were shifting around, trying to not let their nervousness shine through. The whole plan could go horribly wrong. They could all end up in the Refuge, or worse. But if it went right? Not only would they free Spot, but they’d help so many other kids who have been locked away and hurt by those who should never have been given that power.
Even those not participating knew what was at stake. Jack had given a run-down to everyone that morning: The “‘Heist Team’ would sell in the morning as to avoid suspicion and then head over to Brooklyn, where they would strategize and finalize their plan, then put it into motion by sunset. Everyone else would sell as many extra papes as they could to cover for the boys missing work as well as any boys who may be returning to or joining the newsie life once free. Some of the older boys would also try to lure any extra officers as far from the Refuge as possible to keep them out of the team's way.
---
The Manhattan half of the team arrived at the Brooklyn lodging house at noon, just as promised. Quickly surrounded by Brooklyn newsies, not out of the ordinary, but met with a mix of suspicious looks and relieved sighs, very much out of the ordinary.
“Well Higgins, what’ve ya got?” Jack narrowed his eyes at Hotshot, he was well aware that tensions were high and this wasn’t exactly a situation anyone wanted to be in. That didn’t excuse him being so short with Race.
“It’ll go down in the history books,” Race smirked. Full of false confidence. All of his boys behind him. Well, all but one. If there was one thing Race could do without fail, it was bluff. Sometimes Jack could barely tell. The twitch of his fingers, probably aching to crack, was what gave him away.
“We’ll need someone on the ground from Brooklyn to lure as many bulls and guards away as possible, and Finch’ll take three shooters up to the rooftops, they’ll distract anyone remaining. Jack n’ Blink ‘ave volunteered to handle Snyder so you don’t hafta. Me, Albert, an’ anyone else who wants ta join will break one of the window bars usin’ these,” Race gestures to the tools Albert was currently carrying. “From there I’ll go in an’ grab Spot and you’ll work on getting out anyone else we can.”
Jack thought it was a pretty solid plan. It let every participant play to their strengths and was probably the best chance they had considering the handful of previous breakout attempts. Hotshot clearly wasn’t ecstatic about it but seemed willing to go along with it.
A shaky voice piped up from the crowd. “So we’s for sure breakin’ everybody out?”
Race turned stoically to the kid. “We’re certainly gonna try.”
---
The sun was just starting to set, casting the world in an orange glow and allowing the boys to slip through now prominent shadows. They moved into position.
Flicker would lead as many guards as he could on a wild goose chase.
Finch and some Brooklyn slingshotters would distract the rest.
Jack and Blink would sneak past the clueless guards and keep Snyder occupied.
Race, Albert, and Hotshot had the actual break-in, with a few other kids for backup. It hadn’t been too difficult to get their hands on the tools to dismantle the window bars, but that was only because one Manhattan newsie’s dad was a smith and he’d ‘borrowed’ them for the night.
Soon the sun was half-set and the Heist was in motion. And it was up to Flicker to start. Well, if there was one thing a street kid knew how to do, it was cause a ruckus. And boy did he.
Flicker was fast. Could outrun everyone he’s ever met. Grins like a madman when he felt the wind on his face and heard the pounding footsteps behind him. Doesn’t go too fast, yet. If he lost them now they might go back to their posts. He stayed just on the edges of their vision, ducking around people and in and out of alleys. Once he’s far enough away from the Refuge he’ll lose them in proper, let them scour city blocks where they won’t find him, far away from his friends.
Finch was a shot and a half. Hiding on a nearby rooftop, a few Brooklyn boys scattered around doing the same thing, he felt on top of the world. He kind of was. Had more ammo than he knew what to do with and shooting the remaining guards who were too stupid to look up made him feel powerful. These men, who knew what happened in the Refuge, facilitated what happened there, distraught over a couple of kids with slingshots. It was hysterical. Even once they noticed where the attack was being led from they couldn’t do anything about it. Too big and clumsy to climb up like they had shitty enough aim that they couldn’t hit back from the ground. Hah. Finch could do this all night, and it looked like his allies felt the same.
Jack was nervous. Confronting Snyder scared him. He also was aware that he was one of the few people who would actually keep Snyder’s attention without drawing too much suspicion. Of their rag-tag team, it had to be him. And he wasn’t alone, Blink was right there at his side and despite what he let some people think, he could pack a real punch. And if they pulled this off Snyder would be humiliated. That was always a plus in Jack’s book.
All they had to do was trap Snyder in his office or lure him out of the building itself. Easy-peasy. Snyder might not even realize who it was if they were careful enough. Together they quietly slipped through the gates. Blink followed Jack’s lead, he was the only one who’d been here before and escaped. Jack guided them through the halls, halting  at a partially opened door. He peered inside.
Kid Blink hadn’t even seen Warden Snyder like this, up close, before. If he didn’t know better he’d’ve thought that he was just some old man. But the things he’d heard…
Well, let’s just say Blink wasn't going to be getting comfortable anytime soon. Jack motioned for him to stay, then disappeared back the way they came. He reappeared about a minute later, carrying a solid wooden chair. Blink got the idea. He darted across the doorway to the other side, glanced at Jack for guidance, slow he motions, and Blink was. He, deftly as he could, reached into the office and closed the door with a soft thud and click of the handle. Jack immediately secured the chair under the handle. Hopefully that would hold him. If not they could always run, that’d still be a distraction. For now though, just sitting there and keeping an eye out was good enough.
Meanwhile, Race and the Bar Boys, as Race had so aptly named them, were preparing to strike. They had waited long enough that everyone should be taken care of and they could get access to one of the windows (on the ground floor this time) open.
Albert and Hotshot quickly get to work dismantling the whole contraption. They move together in a way that surprises Race, diligent and in sync. They’re done in a matter of minutes and then Race is crawling in through the window to go find Spot and they’re off to dismantle another. If they’re going to get every kid out using only one window would take forever. Most of the other boys followed them with two staying behind to man this entry point.
Race felt dizzy the moment his feet touched the ground inside the Refuge. The last time he was here was under much different circumstances. Circumstances that made him queasy when he thought about them too hard. Shook himself, unconsciously cracking his knuckles, he wasn’t a prisoner this time. He was here on a mission, he was here because Spot needed him to be. He could do this for Spot.
One foot in front of the other, out of sight and on the edge of cautious, Race maneuvered through the empty halls. Deep breaths, forcing down the bile as memories resurfaced. Just think about Spot. One foot in front of the other.
Spot was probably still in the bunk room upstairs. Step. That would be the best place to look for him. Step. And once he was there it’d be easy to address the other kids. Step. Then he’d have to check the more isolated rooms. Step. Free anyone there. Step. He wished someone had freed him while he was there. Step. Memories flashed through his mind. Step- and he’s at the bunkroom door.
One more deep breath and he’s opening the door.
Some of the kids turned to face him in surprise. Eyes combed over the room frantically.
“Where’s Spot Conlon?”
They glanced among themselves wearily until one boy spoke up. “He’s in one of the rooms.”
Race froze. That was bad. Very bad. Swallowed hard, avoiding eye contact. “We’s gettin’ you out, all of ya. The windows on the ground floor are open and everyone is distracted, but you hafta be real quiet and fast. There’ll be kids waiting outside to help you if you need it.”
The surprise is evident on nearly everyone’s face. Instantly most kids are grabbing their meager belongings and practically dash out the door behind him. Race waited for each kid to begin their escape before he forced himself to head towards the isolation rooms.
He walked in a daze, a hollow, aching feeling having taken up residence in his chest where his heartbeat should be. He could hear the muffled sounds of the escapees trying to be silent.
He braced himself.
The first room was empty. As was the second.
The third was occupied. A boy no older than thirteen huddled in the corner, cowering away from the intrusion. Race made it clear he was here to help and pulled the boy to his feet. Told him the same things he told the others and watched the boy run out the door. Race was shaking, just slightly. He never wanted to be in one of these rooms again. He still soldiered on.
Four was empty too.
Race didn’t want to see what was on the other side of five. Spot was on the other side of five. There was nowhere else he could be. Man, this place was messing with his head. The sooner he got Spot out the sooner they could leave. Race opened the door.
Spot was sitting in the corner as well, knees pulled up to his chest, head down and tense beyond belief. From what Race could see, there was visible bruising on his face that certainly hadn’t been there before. If Race hadn’t felt sick before…
Tears gathered in his eyes. “Spot?”
“Racer? What- how- I-”
“We’re getting out of here, right now.” Race helped Spot to a standing position. However, the moment Spot put weight on his left foot he yelped. Getting a better look at it revealed that his ankle was clearly hurt, probably sprained.
Race tightened his grip on Spot. He had been able to walk just fine yesterday. If only he had-
Spot steadied himself, leaning into Race. Tilted his head so Race had no choice but to meet his eyes.
“Sweetheart, it’s okay. I’ll be okay.” Spot sounded so reassuring, so- so sure. Race had no choice but to believe him. Race rubbed at the tear tracks lining his face. Still slightly shaking, he nodded. They just had to get out of this place. Finally having Spot back with him allowed Race’s determination to shine through.
It was a long way home.

Emergency request if that’s, okay? Yo uhhh some of the newsies find out she’s self harming? Maybe she’s dating jack? I am such an awkward fuck but you’re an amazing writer,,,,, please don’t feel pressured to write this though!
Emergency requests are always okay! I’m glad my writing can soothe you at all in a time like this. Just remember though, as someone who has and still does struggle with this, it’s not a good answer to any problem. I know it’s hard to kick the habit, but take deep breathes and really focus on your happiest memories and moments. Almost like you’re conjuring a Patronus! Never be ashamed of the emotions you feel, they’re what make you so uniquely human.
Jack Kelly;
He honestly wouldn’t know what to say, so he’d rather not say anything
He will, however just sit there and hold you close
Once anything heals over, he’ll paint the most beautiful flowers, trees, scenery on them, mentioning how they don’t compare to you the whole time, but hopes they make things even a little better
Katherine;
She’d be in shock, but only for the briefest of moments before pulling you into the closest hug imaginable
She’ll mention that she’s always open to talking with you and that she will fight anyone who makes you feel this way
Kat will probably just keep things as normal as possible for you on her end, but be even more attentive to checking in on you
Davey Jacobs;
This boy would probably tiptoe around the topic for a little bit until he comes up with what to say or becomes comfortable enough to approach the topic
He’ll mention from time to time that certain things are fine when he notices you’re upset
Lots of awkward pats on the back. He really tries to help.
Crutchie;
He’d probably take you out to talk without the boys around
Will probably just walk with you telling jokes until you decide to open up
He’s very patient and incredibly loyal, this boy will always have your back
Spot Conlon:
Let’s be real, Spot Conlon is a tough love person
When he finds out, and he will find out, he’d just sit you down and tell you to talk to him while forcing you to eat some homemade Italian food
He wouldn’t mention anything to Jack, but he would tell you that you’d have to tell him eventually
Racetrack Higgins;
He’d be startled, to say the least. Like, cigar falling out of his mouth in shock
If you’re dating Jack, he’d make sure he knows
He’d try to help work out the problem and comfort you as best he can
Specs;
He’d be really calm about the situation. Boy wouldn’t even blink as he just gives you a big smile
He wouldn’t really address the subject in general
Would definitely mention it to Jack in a way no one else would catch on
Finch;
He’d try to understand the reasoning behind it, though he may get really jittery
He’d try to do little things to brighten your day
He’d instantly try to make sure Jack isn’t the reason behind it and threatens to shoot him with his slingshot if he is part of it
Henry;
He’d try to help by making food
Makes a lot of dad bad jokes
He’d do small, goofy little things to keep your mind off whatever bothers you
Mike;
He’d be startled, but in a way, he could understand as to why
Mike would do his absolute best to get you out of the situation
He’d try to talk to you about it, but will still be really supportive if you refuse
Ike;
Would panic at first, but once calm, he’d offer to fight. Literally anything. Some asshole on the street? Rolling up his sleeves. Your parents? They better watch out. Some famous person? He may get arrested, but the dudes going to get a shiner for sure.
Platonic cuddle boy
Supposing it wouldn’t make you or Jack uncomfortable, he’d take you out on dates to help
Sniper;
Sniper would sympathize because he for sure knows where the mind can go in bad times
Definitely offer to help you out whenever something gets tough
Snipe wouldn’t be the most emotionally supportive, because that’s Jack’s job, but will be there for you
Albert;
He would just kind of throw down, thinking it’s Jack’s fault
When told it’s not Jack, he’d think it’s the Delancey’s and then he’s really ready to throw down
He’d offer to let you come stay with his family because “It might not be the most comfortable, but it’s better than being alone”
Mush;
He’d offer to take you to the circus to unwind
He’d try to see taking you to somewhere with music like the Bowery would help
Mush would try to teach you to dance
JoJo;
He’d do little things to make you smile
Would take you to the different parts of New York that you don’t get to see too much
Takes you to parks to mess around to lighten your mood
Elmer;
Instantly asks if it’s any of the newsies causing a problem
Also asks if you’ve told Jack or anyone else
Will just tell you a bunch of stories of while he was selling or even made up ones
Buttons;
He’d try to make you a stuffed toy
If it’s okay with you and Jack, he’d give you lots of shoulder massages
Will try to be the big brother/shoulder to cry on for you
Romeo;
Platonic flirting, with the intent of making you laugh at him
Gets yelled at by Jack for that
He’d do any cheesy little thing to make you feel better
Smalls;
Hugs. For. Days.
Would 10/10 take you out to get your favorite thing with the earnings from today
Offers to fight Jack for not noticing
Kenny;
He would just try to get straight to the root of the problem
If it’s a physical problem caused by other people, he’d fight. If it’s mental he’d just do small things to try to lessen your burdens
He’d take you to the harbour and teach you to skip rocks with Jacks permission he’d also help you push Vince and Hot Shot into the water
Kid Blink;
He’d understand because of his own past
Would give you small things that helped him
Gives prompted check in times so he knows how you’re doing
Tommy Boy;
Protective boi
Doesn’t matter to him that you’re with Jack. He will lay there and just hold you and rub your back, letting you cry on him
He would try to take you to places that force you to not think about the negetivity
Bart;
Would teach you how to shoot bottles with a slingshot
Finds flowers to give to you, with Jack’s okay
Sings songs and holds you when you start stressing
Vince/Myron;
Being the Brooklyn boi he is, he thinks he has to fight someone
If he can’t fix it with his fists, he would awkwardly try to help in other ways
He’s not good with emotional things all the time, but would do his best to help
Hot Shot;
He’d immediately try to find the reason, and then immediately try to make you laugh
He’d steal random things to see if that will help he even stole a bracelet once
He’d talk to Jack about what you tell him if you give him permission, if not, he’d tell Jack to fuck off
I think that’s all of them?

It’s Time Folks
It’s that time of the year where I pour my heart out and tell you why you should vote for this man over others for the Audience Choice Award at this years Canadian Screen Awards!
Who do I vote for?
If it’s not obvious, you should most definitely (or at least consider) voting for Lachlan Murdoch! He plays Constable Henry Higgins on Murdoch Mysteries!
Why should I vote for Lachlan?
On the surface? He’s a good actor who’s been on Murdoch Mysteries since the very beginning and he deserves the recognition for playing such a marvellous and well-rounded character perfectly!
But truthfully? He’s one of the nicest, most down to earth humans I’ve ever met.
For those of you who have followed me for a while, you’ll know just how much Lachlan Murdoch means to me. For those who don’t know, here’s a little summary for you.
During my last two years of secondary school, I got pretty lonely and picked on for multiple reasons. One of those reasons was watching Murdoch Mysteries. They’d make fun of me for it and tease me for Henry Higgins being my favourite character.
But during that time, I had support from a few people. One of them being Lachlan himself.
Lachlan actively keeps in contact with his fans whenever he can, and I was no exception. When I tweeted about my Henry Higgins cosplay, he loved it. When I tweeted about my story of how Murdoch Mysteries and his character means the world to me, he inspired me with a quote that I live by to this day. He even wished me a happy birthday. Here’s some proof of how wonderful he is:
Tumblr media
His signature and inscription in my copy of Let Darkness Bury The Dead, the latest Murdoch Mysteries book.
Tumblr media
His birthday tweet to me.
Tumblr media
His contribution to my 2017 Anti Bullying Week campaign where he showed me the oddest socks I’ve ever seen, and wore them.
To name but a few times.
And yes, I was indeed most fortunate to have met Lachlan in person when I visited Toronto in July of last year, where I have never been made to feel so welcome and valued before. He was so genuine and appreciative of my support, and of my interest and support for his character and his acting, it was so heartwarming to me. And when he saw I was about to cry as they were going to leave, he thanked me for all of my support and then gave me the best hug I have ever received.
I miss him.
So, where can I vote for him?
Easy! Head over to https://www.academy.ca/votenow/ and vote!

Thank you so much for your time, and please remember to vote for Lachlan!

Departed Chap 6 Pt 2
Ship: Slow burn Sprace
Warnings: Flashback type thing. Albert being a dumbass
Spot was shocked awake by the sound of loud banging at his apartment door. He closed his eyes, willing whoever was knocking to go away. It was Christmas morning for chrissakes, couldn’t he sleep?
The knocking persisted and he felt Race groan against his chest, “Spottie, go get that and tell whoever it is to shut the fuck up.”
Spot pulled himself from Race’s embrace and stumbled out of his bedroom. Whoever was at the door was still knocking.
“Shut up, I’m comin’!” Spot shouted. He opened the door and was greeted with Albert and Finch, both wearing reindeer antlers.
“Merry fuckin’ Christmas!” Albert exclaimed, smiling brightly.
“Albert Schuyler DaSilva, it is too early for you to-”
“We brought Christmas breakfast,” Finch cut in, holding up a dish with a basket of bagels balanced on top.
Spot held the door open wider, “I hope ya know m’only lettin’ you guys in cuz you brought food. Any other circumstance I’d have slammed the door in ya faces.”
“Oh, we know,” Albert said, making his way to Spot’s bedroom, “ANTONIO HIGGINS, GET THE FUCK UP! IT’S CHRISTMAS!”
“FUCK YOU, ALBERT!”
Albert walked over to where Spot and Finch were setting the table, “He’ll be comin’.”
Sure enough, Race walked out of the bedroom two minutes later, wearing an old Christmas sweater, “Hey, Finch?”
“Yeah?”
“Your boyfriend is awful.”
“I know,” Finch said, leaning over and kissing the offended look off of Albert’s face.
The four boys dug into the feast, “Y’all doin’ anythin’ today?” Albert asked, mouth full of cinnamon roll.
“Don’t eat with your mouth full, love,” Finch piped up.
Albert frowned and swallowed, “So are y’all?”
“We’re gonna go down to Rockefeller Center ta see the big tree,” Spot said, spreading cream cheese onto a bagel.
“We are?” Race cocked his head.
“Oh yeah, forgot to ask ya,” Spot said, “Hey, Race, wanna go see the big tree in Rockefeller Center?”
Race rolled his eyes, “Yeah, Spot, I’ll go see the big tree with ya.”
Spot kicked him under the table and Race laughed, “Anyway, yeah that’s our plan. What about you guys?”
Finch shrugged, “Nothin’ really. Prolly gonna watch some Christmas movies and make cookies.”
“You guys can come see the tree with us if ya want,” Spot offered, “I was thinkin’ of goin’ around 8 ish.”
Albert and Finch exchanged a glance, “Okay, sure.” Albert said, “Y’all are welcome to come make cookies with us before.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Race said, cheerfully.
The table was cleared not long afterward and Spot and Race went to get dressed while Albert and Finch relaxed in the living room. Spot tugged off his pajama shirt and pants, then rummaged through his drawers for a clean long-sleeved shirt. The door to the bathroom opened and Spot thanked the heavens that he was wearing boxer briefs at the moment.
“Oh shit, Spot, sorry. Shoulda made sure you were decent,” Race spluttered, turning an impressive shade of red.
Spot hastily pulled on a pair of jeans, “S’fine, man. S’not like you haven’t seen me in a swimsuit or somethin’ before.”
“Dude, Tae Kwon Do is makin’ you ripped,” Race blurted. His eyes widened when he realized what he had just said, “I am fuckin’ up so badly right now, so I’ma jus’, uh, walk out of the room.”
Spot watched, half-amused and thoroughly flustered as Race backed out of his bedroom. He blinked a few times to compose himself, then pulled on a grey sweater that he’d forgotten he owned before exiting his room as well.
“Cookie time!” Albert cheered. They made the short walk across the hall to Albert and Finch’s apartment. Upon entry, Albert and Race made a beeline to the fridge and pulled out two packs of Pillsbury Christmas tree cookies.
“These are better than drugs and no one can convince me otherwise,” Race said, ripping open a pack and placing them on a cookie tray that Albert had supplied.
“I agree with that statement and I’m a strong believer in weed solving all of life’s problems.” Albert said, earning a scoff from Race.
Spot and Finch sat in the living room as the other two boys baked the cookies.
“How’s Race been?” Finch asked after several minutes of comfortable quiet.
Spot shrugged, “He has his ups and downs. He’s still avoiding talkin’ about Melissa too much, which kinda worries me.”
“That’s valid, ‘specially after the way he reacted when she showed up at ya door like a freaky bitch.”
Spot scoffed, “That about sums her up- and yeah, she’s definitely affected him way more than he lets on.”
“I wonder if it’s not necessarily that he’s afraid of lookin’ weak or sum, rather he jus’ doesn’t wanna acknowledge that he went through somethin’ like that,” Finch said, thoughtfully, “I remember when Al was in that car crash n’ he lost his brother, he refused to talk about it for months. When he finally did, it was like he was truly acceptin’ it for the first time...God that was messy.”
Spot frowned, he remembered the several months following Albert’s accident. It had been their freshman year of college and for a while, Albert had seemed like nothing but a shell of the charismatic person he usually was. His brother, Henry, had been the closest person to him and losing him had near killed him. What Race had gone through had not been of the same nature as Albert’s experience, but it definitely had instilled a similar trauma into him.
“Yeah, it would make sense if it’s somethin’ like that,” Spot said, “I guess he’ll talk when he’s ready.”
“Time is all ya can give these kinds of thing,” Finch sighed.
“I suppose.”
Albert and Race came out with a plate full of cookies, “Movie marathon time!” Race said, “Albert and I made a list of the movies we’re watchin’ today. First is a Christmas Story.”
XXX
At 7:45, the four boys were gearing up to go. Finch had suggested they make hot cocoa to bring, so they all were carrying Christmas themed thermoses that they had found in the apartment.
“I’m so excited,” Race said as he pulled on the hat that Spot had let him keep after their ice skating excursion, “I haven’t been ta see the tree in years.”
“I’ve never been,” Albert admitted.
Spot turned to him in shock, “You’re tellin’ me you’ve lived in New York City all your life and you haven’t seen the big tree?”
“I’ve only been livin’ here since I was fourteen and I’ve been,” Finch added.
“My parents weren’t big on Christmas, okay? Not my fault,” Albert huffed.
Race laughed and clapped him on the back, “No worries, brother. We’re here to help ya lose your Rockefeller Center Tree virginity.”
“Why d’you hafta word things the way you do?” Spot asked and Race wrinkled his nose, pulling his scarf on.
They arrived at Rockefeller Center to find it bustling with people. The tree looked magnificent. It towered over the square, lighting it up with brilliant white lights. A soft blue glow was spread across the ice skating rink directly under where the tree stood, adding a mystical aura to the area. Spot glanced over to Race, who was staring in awe up at the tree. The blue glow reflected in his eyes, making them impossibly bluer. The lights from the tree reflected off his fair skin and Spot couldn’t help but think how beautiful he looked as he stood, completely enraptured by the scene before him. Race turned his head and made eye contact with Spot.
He smiled and reached out to hold onto one of Spot’s hands, “Spot, this is beautiful. I’m really glad we came.”
“I am too,” Spot said. Race stepped closer to Spot’s side and laced their fingers together. They stood, sipping their hot cocoa and taking in the sights and sounds of New York City on Christmas for what felt like an eternity.
Their peace was interrupted however by the sounds of several cars honking loudly. Race jumped, his hot cocoa mug slipping from his hands and spilling it’s contents down the front of Spot’s shirt.
“Shit! Ow,” Spot exclaimed, jumping backwards.
“Fuck, Spot I’m so sorry,” Race said, backing away, “I-I’m sorry, I-” His breath hitched and Spot looked up from his shirt to see Race with his eyes squeezed shut, covering his mouth with one hand. From where he stood, he could tell Race was shaking. He doubled over slightly and Spot forced himself to recover from his shock. He carefully walked towards where Race was standing, reminding himself not to touch him. People were starting to stare and Spot glanced around to look for some kind of cover. There were a few storefronts a little ways away that looked pretty vacant, so he decided to aim for those.
“Hey Race, canya hear me?” He asked, working to keep his tone soothing and not at all accusatory. Race didn’t answer and Spot cursed to himself.
Albert and Finch materialized by his side, “What happened?” Finch asked, alarmed.
“He spilled his hot cocoa on me,” Spot answered, his attention still directed towards Race, who was visibly crying now, “Racer, c’mon. Are ya hearin’ me?”
Race backed up another step, “I-I’m sorry,” Spot heard him whisper.
Spot stepped closer, “Antonio, I needya ta listen. C’mon, I promise I’m not mad and I’m not gonna touch ya. Canya please hear me?” Spot begged. He felt helpless.
Albert stepped tentatively next to Spot, “I think he’s havin’ like a flashback sorta thing. I used ta get ‘em after..ya know. Can I try to-” He gestured towards Race and Spot nodded. Albert walked carefully over to Race so he was standing right next to him.
“Race,” He said, softly, “It’s me, Albert. Jus’ me n’ you here. I promise that’s all that’s happenin’. Canya open your eyes, please? I promise, it’s Albert. You can open your eyes and you’ll be safe.”
Spot watched as Race blinked open his eyes. He flinched violently before making eye contact with Albert. The relief that flitted across his features broke Spot’s heart.
Albert continued, “Nice job, dude. Think we can move somewhere a lil’ quieter? I think that might make ya feel better.”
Race nodded and the two of them weaved through the crowd towards the storefronts Spot had noticed earlier. Finch and him exchanged a look before hurrying after them. They got caught behind a few groups of people and by the time they got to the other two, Race had stopped crying.
“You good, man?” Finch asked, sympathetically.
Race shrugged, “Yeah, m’better. Sorry ‘bout your shirt, Spot.”
“It’s okay, Race, I swear ta ya I ain’t mad or nothin’.” Race nodded.
“Why don’t we head back?” Albert suggested.
“I think that’s a good idea,” Spot agreed.
Back at the apartment, Spot waited in the bedroom while Race took a shower. He mentally replayed what Albert had done to help Race in case he’d ever have to get Race through a bad situation again, though he prayed to anyone who could be listening that he wouldn’t. Race emerged from the bathroom looking drained. He sat down on the bed by Spot’s feet.
“I want to talk about it. I want to share more than I have,” He paused and took a deep breath, “I need to talk it out, I know that I won’t get past it if I don’t. It just-” His voice cracked and Spot sat up to run a hand up and down his back, “It just hurts so goddamn much. She hurt me so goddamn much and I don’t wanna live it again by talking about it.”
Even from his space behind him, Spot could tell that Race was holding back tears.
He stopped rubbing his back and reached for one of Race’s hands, “Talk about it when you’re ready. I’m here to listen whenever that is. You’re not alone, Race. You’re not goin’ through this alone.”
“I’m sorry I ruined Christmas- and your shirt.”
“You didn’t ruin anythin’, Race. Nothin’ that happened tonight was your fault.”
Race gave a watery laugh, “What did I do to deserve you, Spot?”
“You deserve everything good, Race. You deserve support and help and love.”
Race didn’t answer. Instead, he gave Spot’s hand a squeeze and laid back against his chest. Spot lifted his free hand and carded it through Race’s hair. He began to softly hum under his breath until he could feel Race’s breath even out into sleep- finally looking at peace.

Movie Night
@awwwwwwdang here it is. Sorry it wasn’t posted earlier, I finished right before I boarded the plane
.
“Have fun, Benjamin!” Buttons mom called from her room. Buttons waved to his four younger siblings and shut the door behind him. It was the first Friday in July. The first Friday of every month, the whole gang would meet up at someone’s house and have a movie night. The host changes monthly, but occasionally someone will lose a bet. This time, it was at JoJo’s house.
Buttons ran down the steps to the apartment building and stepped out onto the busy sidewalk. People rushed by in a hurry to get to one place or another. Buttons was also in a rush, but only because he didn’t want to be late. If he was late, all the snacks would be taken before he got there.
He crashed into someone. The boy looked over at who he ran into. It was Henry.
“Hey, Henry. What’s up?” Buttons asked. Henry joined Buttons on his walk to JoJo’s house.
“Not much. I was going to come find you. Jack wasn’t sure if you were coming this time or not,” Henry replied. Buttons made a face.
“Why?” Buttons scrunched his nose. Yeah, he was usually late, but he was still coming.
“Because we know that your moms been sick lately. We weren’t sure if you were staying home with her,” Henry explained, both boys crossing the street. That made sense. Buttons’ mom had been sick lately, and he had been missing some stuff to take care of her and his siblings. But he would never miss movie night.
“Henry, out of all the things I’ll miss, I will never miss movie night,” Buttons pulled open the door for JoJo’s apartment. His parents were out of town, so it just gave their big friend group more room to hang out. Both boys walked in silence up the stairs. Henry knocked, but Buttons stood in front of the door.
“Who is it?!” Someone shouted, probably Race. Buttons rolled his eyes.
“It’s Henry and Buttons!” Henry shouted, hoping to be heard through the thick wooden door. Buttons tapped his fingers against the doorframe.
“Who?” Race called back. Buttons jiggled the door knob. Locked, just like always. They should have just climbed through the window. None of their friends ever left their windows locked. Just in case.
“Very funny, Race,” Henry sighed and dropped his hands to his sides. Buttons rested his head against the cold wood the door was made of. They weren’t late. A few minutes early, to be in fact.
“Whose Race?” Race called. Buttons banged his head against the door. He didn’t get enough sleep for this.
“Antonio “Racetrack” Higgins, open the damn door,” Buttons snapped. He could hear the door being unlocked. So, he stood up straight so he wouldn’t fall in.
“Benjamin “Buttons” Davenport, glad to see you made it,” Race laughed, letting Henry and Buttons in.
“Of course I made it,” Buttons stuck his tongue out at Race. “I’d never miss movie night.”
“Now That Buttons and Henry are here,” Romeo gestured to the tv. “Can we please pick a movie?” Everyone was spread out everywhere. Smalls, Tommy Boy, Finch, Mush, Specs, Les, and Romeo were all sitting on the floor. Crutchie, Jack, Elmer, Albert, JoJo, Davey, Tex, Spot, and Race were taking up all the couch and chair space. Buttons and Henry joined the guys on the floor.
“Well, what are our options?” Henry asked. Romeo glanced up, then grabbed two dvd cases and held them up. It looked like the two options were Mulan, or Coco.
“I say we watch Coco, it’s still new and most of us haven’t seen it,” Buttons shrugged, snatching a blanket from Smalls. The room went silent. A rare occurrence when you have over twelve teenagers in the same room.
“Buttons has a point,” Davey said after a moment. The room murmured in agreement.
“Coco it is!” Romeo declared, jumping up to put the movie in. Buttons made himself comfortable, excited to see this movie.
.
The end credits began to roll, Les turning on the lights. Buttons was crying. And, by the sound of it, everyone else was too. He looked around. Tears were streaming down the faces of his friends. Even Spot was crying. For a minute, no one did or said anything. It was weird, to have everyone silent and crying. Race wasn’t even making a comment about the film.
“How can a child’s film make us cry so much?” Mush asked, breaking the silence they all fell into. Buttons wiped the tears from her face.
“I don’t know,” Spot said softly.
“I say Buttons holds the next movie night,” Albert said, wiping his face with the sleeves of his sweatshirt. “For picking a movie that made us all cry.”
“Yeah!” Race shouted, wiping his tears. Buttons held his hands up in surrender. The boy didn’t have any problems hosting the next movie night.
“Ok, ok,” Buttons sighed. “But you all agreed to it!” Jack looked offended.
“We didn’t know what we were getting into!” Elmer shouted. It escalated to an all out war. Popcorn was thrown, twizzlers were chucked, and things were said. Nothing to hurtful, though. They were mad, not enemies.
“Benjamin “Buttons” Davenport, to you take responsibility for choosing the movie?!” Davey shouted from behind the couch. Buttons and a few others had taken cushions and built a small fort to shield themselves.
“Yes!” Buttons shouted, wanting the attack to stop. “I take responsibility. And I’ll host next months movie night, I swear!” All attacks stopped.
“Ok,” Race said, coming out from behind the couch. “Now we gotta clean this up.” Everyone pitches in. After all, they all had a hand in the fight. It was a good thing that JoJo’s parents weren’t home. They would have had a fit after seeing the mess.
Buttons went home that night and flipped down on the couch and sighed. After seeing the mess back at JoJo’s, Buttons didn’t really want to host a movie night. But, a deals a deal.
