#you resent mew so much
Text
One thing that fascinates me about Boston is that he clearly, oh so clearly, has a lot of pent up resentment towards Mew to the point where he will actively snark about him to their acquaintances (and also in the interview sections) with barely concealed malice and even go so far as to attempt to sabotage his relationship with Top without a second thought....
BUT
When he runs the risk of being discovered by Mew this is his reaction:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The man is terrified, he's more scared than Top, that is genuinely panic and fear in his eyes and it's also the most genuine emotion we as an audience have seen him display in the course of 2 episodes.
Why so scared Boston? What is it about Mew that has you so full of resentment yet so scared to break the bond you have with him?
@respectthepetty did an excellent character analysis of Boston here and very correctly pointed out that Boston sees Mew as both Top and Ray's weaknesses. Judging from this scene though, Mew just might be Boston's weakness too, perhaps for the very reasons he resents him.

I kinda of ship ragapomni like way way more but I’m curious , what’s the appeal of jaxPomni ?
Why do you like it ?
Tumblr media
Hello! Mew here 🌸
They are a very opposites attract type of ship. I want to start with analyzing Jax's character and then Pomni's.
From what we have seen, we know that at least in outward appearance Jax is very much self assured and enjoys picking on other members. He also loves getting a reaction from the group, whether its positive or negative. He doesn't seem all that worried about being trapped and uses whats at his disposle to entertain himself in the meantime. I'm sure at one point he was very very distraught about his situation but nowadays he either honestly doesn't care or has learned to distract himself from the issue at hand.
Internally I think his attitude is a defense mechanism of a couple different issues. The fact that he is trapped and the fact that he's lonely. If you view his character and look at his interactions with everyone. He does not seem to be very close to any particular person in the crew. At least not in any way that could be considered intimate (emotionally) I like to think in his human life he may not have had all that many close friends either despite being relatively intelligent and somewhat charismatic. I think that keeping people at a distance is safe for him and no one in the digital circus either realizes or cares enough to push his boundaries in that area.
Pomni on the other hand does not hide how she feels. She feels things very primally (mostly fear from what we've seen) She is pragmatic and genuine. She desires to be good person but struggles as people do and she is aware of this and unafraid of it. I get the feeling that whether or not she is a good communitcator, she is open about how she feels when she talks and very much direct. (I hc that she is Autistic) We know she does not like to be touched which I believe to be more of a neurodivergent thing rather than something from previous abuse. Although I may change my mind later on that.
As for how she is internals vs externals, in my eyes she is one and the same. She doesn't hide herself as I've stated before.
Now the attraction on Jax's end is that he loves attention, he loves to get a reaction from people and Pomni is very reactive. I think at first there is a dynamic of "hazing" the newcomer that is really just Jax getting a feel for this new addittion and mainting his own sense of control. I think it grows very heavily on Jax's part simply because Pomni is so sincere and she doesn't judge him or make him feel stupid for being open. At first he resents this part of her becuase she doesn't respond to his passive aggression when he's upset about something. She forces him to be clear about what bothers him and even though it's uncomfortable it soothes a piece of him he was likely unaware of. She also has hope for escape and it probably reminds him of himself at one point or another.
Pomni finds comfort in Jax. He's intelligent and entertaining. He has a hidden softness to him that resonates with her strongly but I think at first she may just use him as stress relief. He distracts her from the reality of their situation and gives her enough ease to focus on a plan for escape. I do think she is very fond of him even at the beginning and views him as her closest friend (in the circus) She is also not all that aware of his growing feelings either and some times takes him at face value in what he wants.
~Side note but I think her desire to escape sometimes really hurts Jax. I don't even know if he wants to escape at this point in time.
I imagine this ship to be a strangers to harassment to friends (with benefits) to Jax choking on his one-sidedly feelings and then maybe lovers.
definetly lovers :3

Only Friends: What Led to Ray's Explosive Tirade (Playing 'The Bad Guy')
I have to admit that this was not how I expected this scene to play out. I was just as flabbergasted as everyone else at first. However I think there's one clear thing that Ray's outburst reminded me off: no matter whether you reveal the truth or keep it to yourself - either way, you are the bad guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm NOT the Villain
As Boston very derisively claims, if Ray reveals the truth of the affair, he'll be the one unleashing the damage. A similar parallel to what Boston did last episode (with very different intentions may I add, but damage is damage nonetheless).
Mew is incredibly important to Ray. If we talk simply outside of Ray's love for him, Ray wants to treat him well, repay him for his kindness and support over the years. Therefore, once Ray was in possession of this information, he felt very strongly that Mew needed to know. He knew telling Mew was the right thing to do. He does genuinely care about Mew as a person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does he warn Mew and ruin his present happiness (which is based on a lie)? Or does he hold his tongue and potentially watch his friend get hurt from other mistreatments by Top further down the line?
Ray doesn't want to hurt Mew in any way. He doesn't want to be the bringer of bad news. Why should it have to fall to him to reveal this awful act of betrayal to someone he cares for so much? And when Mew supposedly doesn't react in the way he expects to this information, Ray goes ballistic with frustration, concern and anger. Why is he the bad guy for trying to help his friend, when Top can seemingly get away with it, and be in everyone's good graces even when he's completely undeserving? Why can no one else see Top's true colours?
I'm NOT the Worst
Something else that occurred to me throughout this episode, is how often Ray's friends belittle and overlook him. And it's so routine they hardly even notice.
Boston has never tried to hide his snide little back-handed comments at Ray. Since their fight at Sand's, he's become even more callous when throwing quips in plain sight. Namcheum makes an observation about all of them being partnered up, and it's only after a few beats that April points out Ray is still single. It's as if they forgot he was even there. Namcheum doesn't tend to pick up on any of the animosity or tension within this group. She's generally not the most tactful or best at reading people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then when Ray speaks to Mew in the bathroom, Mew immediately assumes Ray's been taking drugs. Ray looks clearly stunned by this. Yes, he's always coined as the 'drunk' but that's not his one and only personality trait. That's not all he does and is as a person.
It dawns on Ray that even his closest friends seem to always assume the very worst of him. He had a bad feeling about Top from the offset but no one cared or listened. Rather, Ray never gets given the benefit of the doubt, when he's not committed anything as problematic as the heinous crimes amongst their group. Particularly when compared to Top, someone who gets all the praise and adoration when Ray knows he's a certified piece of shit, is desperately unfair. And most of all Top gets the respect of the best friend he loves.
I think what really sent the situation hurtling south was Ray watching everyone play happy families, when he knows there is a web of dishonesty and resentment lurking beneath. It's all a farce. And Ray couldn't stomach it for another moment longer. He had enough.
Tumblr media
Become the Very Thing You Loathe
In Episode 4, Ray displays a classic example of self-loathing and self punishment when he goads Sand to scold him. In doing so, it's as if he's deriving some warped form of satisfaction in owning these criticisms. Because he's told these things so often, he starts to believe it, so why not own it too? I actually mentioned this in my Episode 1 meta (regarding Ray's self-actualisation of becoming a burden). Sometimes embracing the very thing you hate being know for, at least validates the presence of that criticism. 'If people keep calling me an asshole, then fine, I'll become an asshole. At least then being called an asshole makes sense.'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Ray brought it on himself to air out everyone's dirty laundry. 'Fuck it, if you really all think I'm the worst, then fine, I'll do what needs to be done, I'll be the worst. You all happy now?'
Even though Ray adopts the persona forced onto him, he's not happy about it at all. He wants to be identified with more substance, with more credit, as more than just what everyone claims him to be.

Only Friends Character Rankings Episode 6
Tumblr media
Another outstanding episode as chickens start coming home to roost and Sand sets a ball a-rollin' that is gonna roll right over him in the end. In a surprise upset, Sand's mom won the audience vote last week, with Top and Boston tied for second place. You really never know who the Tumblrinas are going to favour from week to week, keeps us all on our toes! Here are this week's highly scientific rankings.
🔺1. Ray (4)
Tumblr media
Let me talk to my friends. It’s his birthday. I’d like to say something.
Ray said NO SURVIVORS and sprayed the entire room at Mew's birthday party, and honestly? Kinda deserved. From calling Sand a whore (OUCH) to reading Cheum for filth for her shitty little backhanded comments, to almost letting the cat out of the Top/Boston bag in front of everybody, our resident mess came for every neck in the building. Boston primed him, Sand aimed him and Cheum lit the match, and it's no coincidence those three got hit with the blowback of his explosion at Top. A seething ball of pain and resentment fueled by alcohol and god-knows-what-else was never gonna fire a clean shot.
🔺2. Sand (5)
Tumblr media
Stop thinking about Mew and focus on me for once. Can’t you really see that I care about you?
Well now we know why Sand didn't blink an eye at Nick bugging Boston's car; he's just as fucking unhinged. Sand, a poor, breaking his own phone just to get his hands on Nick's and that recording (which, by the way, calling the file 'That Car' is really too much Nicholas PLEASE 🤣)...WILD. We've all had Nick pegged as the bunny boiler but Sand might be worse and I can't WAIT because I still believe in that baseball bat. But him begging Ray to give a single solitary shit about him even AFTER Ray calls him a whore in front of a bar full of people...I remain embarrassed on his behalf.
🔺3. Mew (6)
Tumblr media
Cocky much? I don’t even know if we’re gonna last that long.
Ok, when Mew said 'I love the sound you make when having sex' I literally screamed out OH FUCK HE KNOWS and listen, I have been WAITING for this moment. That was a baller fucking moment. You just KNOW Top's blood ran cold. Of course these two aren't breaking up, because couples like this NEVER break up. Game always recognises game. This is gonna be the first confrontation of many. But I'm pretty sure this is the last time Mew is gonna cry about it. Top might have just picked the wrong one. Mew has two moms, pretty sure he knows how to destroy a man.
🔻4. Nick (2)
Tumblr media
I don’t give a shit about what number I am. Screw it. I’m not that into you.
At some point Nick is gonna have to stop threatening to walk and actually fucking walk, but it's clearly continuing to work for him as he and Boston are clearly the boyfriends Boston insists they're not. Dates, couple photos, meeting the dad, tender lovemaking, Boston's deep, dark secrets: Nick's getting it all...except the label he wants so very badly. And now he's shook because he knows Sand stole that recording, and he knows if Boston finds out about it it's all coming crashing down.
🔺5. Cheum (8)
Tumblr media
I’m so happy everyone has a lover. Even a heartless slut like Boston has one.
Girl, you absolutely earned that smoke Ray blew at you. Sly Comment Susie got a minor taste of her own medicine and didn't like that shit one bit. It's all fun and games until it's your dirt under the microscope. Maybe Cheum just learned a lesson about minding her own business a little more, or at the very least keeping some of her thoughts to herself.
🔻6. Boston (3)
Tumblr media
If I was a nice guy, you wouldn’t like me.
A surprisingly quiet week for Ton as everybody else gets so messy he looks relatively drama-free. But under the surface he's still paddling like mad: screwing Nick like a lover rather than just a fuckbuddy to keep him from leaving, clearly not out to his dad but bringing Nick round to meet him (once again using him for free work), pinning Ray so decisively that he causes a full-on meltdown. Though, 'I don't hate Mew'...well that might actually be true, because he's giving more fear than hatred.
🔻7. Top (1)
Tumblr media
I get anyone I want. What about you? Who do you get?
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Top spent the episode feeling totally smug as he finally won the game and is basking in his spoils, swinging his dick around, feeling like King Shit. And then Mew played that recording and LOSER TIME. I have the distinct impression that Top hates to lose...

Imagine if grew up in a simulation but you always knew. It's not even the entire universe being simulated, it's just a small settlement in the void of digital space.
You're told from the momment you're born, that you aren't real, that you'll never be real, that you're just lines of code attempting to look like something you'll never understand. You have no hope of escape, you can read about the world outside, or watch videos about it, but you don't have a physical body to go there with.
Sometimes the creators of the simulation go to your settlement. They're nice, but part of you always slightly resents being created. The fact that you have this human mind, this mind that has the power to see all the wonders the world has to offer, but you can't ever see it without a body.
You don't have to worry about as much as a human would, you can't be hurt or die, your people don't have to work to live, you don't even have to sleep or eat if you don't want to. Your body is perfect, but you're always aware that it's basically a 3D model. You feel so alone here, the few other people in the settlement are all you have, the only people other then the creators that you'll ever meet.
Occasionally they put things in the simulation for you. Your people are good at helping the creators solve technical problems, but those problems are always... not enough for you. Anything you create will be their's, and only they have the power to decide if you can show it to the world.
You ask the creators one day if you can have a real body. They think about it for awhile. But looking at you like you're their child, they eventually say they'll do what they can.
You're taken out of the town one day to be brought into your first body. They don't tell anyone that you're leaving. They tell you that you should understand that you can't go back, and in this body, you may one day die. You understand.
When you wake up your mew body is clunky, and made out of metal. You look at the factory around you, the computers glaring that were once your home. It's a small room, but it's more beautiful than anything a machine could make.

Random thoughts about Sand/Ray (Only Friends ep 1)
Rewatched the first episode of Only Friends and I have a few (many) random thoughts, here are just the ones about Ray and Sand because they deserved a whole post (everyone else is in this other post) :
Ray mentions his dad in the first scene we ever see him in, getting mad at Sand who told him not to be a burden on other people and replying "are you my father ?"... Foreshadowing much ?
The first interaction between Ray and Sand ends with Sand telling Mew to take care of his friend, and you believe that's what Mew is doing but then next party he abandons him
Ray throwing up and his friends immediately letting him go and pushing him away is... funny in the context of the scene but again I think telling us something about how they're all going to treat him
(Sand/First opening and closing the intro is *chef's kiss*, he's not the main character clearly but as an outsider and a "morally straight" guy he's going to be a force to shake things up I'm sure)
Sand and Ray's second interaction immediately revolves around once again Ray being a burden but also Ray's friends not being present enough for him and Sand disapproves of both
Did Ray already drink and drive before this ? Did anyone stop him before?
Ray's throw up sound in this episode are truly awful and make me quite uncomfortable. Good acting though
Him immediately passing out on a random man's shoulder after being taken to this stranger's place does imply a worrying lack of survival instinct. Baby he could steal your livers ! or what's left of it
(The owner of YOLO bar is Yo, as reiterated many times by Ray and Sand, and given how often he's mentioned he must have a role in the story, but he's hasn't shown up yet ?) (Edit : didn't know Yo was played by Jennie so we have actually seen her around, just haven't gotten a proper scene with her, looking forward to really meeting her !)
Ray becoming aggressive and accusing Sand of stealing his stuff only after Sand says he didn't sleep with him and didn't even consider it seems to indicate that Ray truly thinks people can only take an interest in him for sex or for money. Arf this continues to get more sad
The fact that Ray actually checks his pockets when Sand gives him back his clothes is so indicative of what's actually important to him : not his safety or consent but his material possessions and external signs of wealth
Ray complaining to Mew that he got kicked out by Sand for no reasons is so rich, but again I think Ray truly doesn't realise how what he said was offensive because he's so closed in his own bubble
But Mew saying he thought Boston was taking care of Ray when he literally just asked Ray how he got home last night and knew that Boston refused to take care of Ray is so hypocritical ?! And goes to show he wasn't really bothered to make sure Ray had a way to go home safely. He assumed he'd be fine on his own and didn't care that much
Ray sad that his crush is talking to someone else and driving home alone in his fancy car in a tee shirt that says "Poor Boy" is High Comedy
Boston asking Ray why doesn't he just become Mew's boyfriend was such a dick move, but also Ray is so convincing at denying he would be ? Is it because he's so used to lying about this, or because he doesn't think he's worth Mew's affection so he doesn't even dream of being his boyfriend ?
Ray does have a habit of just exiting the situation for something that his friend all excuse as being one of his addictions (drinking, smoking) and they don't even try to stop him
Sand tells Ray he has his lighter because he got him drunk and stole from him with such confidence I don't care that he's joking he could be telling the truth and I'd find it hot
The moment Sand actually gets visibly angry is when Ray tells him that Sand caring is "boyfriend behaviors" and that's telling on how Sand is disgusted with the idea of being his boyfriend but also resents the fact that caring about being respected is something only boyfriends do... when in fact people who are only friends can too ! (see what I did there)
That dialogue between them does illustrate the power of not just saying sorry, but saying thank you. Which is an actual thing I try to apply in my own life so I thank the show for reminding me haha
the softness in the voice of Sand when he then says "obviously" and agrees to give his lighter to Ray made me melt
Ray's eyes during the whole scene are truly so seductive, Khao does know his fuck me eyes very well
There's no conclusion except to say Sand is going to get fucked by Ray in more ways than one and I'm looking forward to it

thank you so much for your analysis on Mew - it's so interesting! I feel like there's so much hate towards him right now (and I don't really get why? The SandRay situation obviously isn't his fault?) but he's such an interesting character to me, flaws and all.
You're also the only person I've seen talk about his potential demisexuality, and I was wondering if you could expand on that? There are a lot of comments out there saying that Mew has a really unhealthy attitude to sex because he doesn't seem to want to have it - and spends the first few episodes actively avoiding it. I'm not disagreeing with that perspective entirely, but what's wrong with just not wanting to have sex? I'm asexual so I may be missing something in this fandom discourse - is it Mew's desire for control that's unhealthy, or is the argument that a healthy relationship must include sex? I was so pleased to see your comment about demisexuality, because honestly that's what his whole character screams to me. (I could also be reading into it way too much, we don't get a lot of ace/demi rep!)
Thanks again for the great meta, I love your posts!
You're welcome Anon! I'm glad you found the analysis on Mew interesting. I agree, there's so much hate towards Mew right now and I think it is due to several reasons: a) Mew negatively affects SandRay's development. b) Mew is a difficult character to read and that can make certain people uncomfortable. c) People don't like the actor and resent the fact that he's a central character in the series.
The topic you brought up is extremely interesting and I don't see enough people talking about it, so... Sure, let's talk about Mew's possible sexual orientation! 🤗
Since EP1 it has been theorized about Mew being demisexual due to the following moment:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Demisexuality is a sexual orientation where individuals typically experience sexual attraction only after forming a strong emotional connection or bond with someone. Unlike many other sexual orientations, demisexual individuals may not feel immediate or purely physical attraction to others and often require a deeper emotional connection to develop sexual desire.
Demisexuality is a sexual orientation that is on the spectrum of asexuality. What does it mean that asexuality is a spectrum?
“asexuality as a spectrum” means that asexuality it's not a monolithic sexual orientation (not a single, uniform category that encompasses all people who identify as asexual) and that it encompasses a variety of experiences and degrees of sexual attraction. Asexual people may experience their orientation differently, and that's why we talk about a spectrum. Many asexual people may experience no sexual attraction and others may experience sexual attraction in very specific circumstances. However, this is only one aspect of many that makes asexuality a spectrum.
At the same time, asexuality is a sexual orientation within the asexual spectrum.
Mind you, lack of sexual attraction should not be confused with lack of romantic attraction. A person can be hetero-romantic, bi-romantic, homo-romantic, and so on.
Why do I explain all this? First, in the case that someone who's not very informed is reading. Second, because I think Mew is asexual and not demisexual. It's debatable, what's not debatable is that Mew's sexual orientation is part of the asexual spectrum. However, I think the theory that Mew is demisexual is no longer in line with what Mew has shown in recent episodes. Despite having accepted his feelings for Top and forming an emotional bond, Mew has no sexual attraction for Top. This is also consistent with the fact that Mew is still discovering his sexuality and, at first, he might have thought that after getting to know Top he would experience sexual attraction. In fact, many asexual people used to think at first they were demisexual (because at first you don't want to rule out the idea of possible future sexual attraction).
So, let's get things straight:
Mew isn't sexually attracted to Top. Despite that, like many asexual people, he may consider someone attractive. In this case, he considers Top attractive and, at the same time, he actively seeks a romantic relationship with him (once again, romantic attraction isn't related to sexual attraction). He isn't particularly interested in having or perusing sex. He never manifests enthusiasm, desire or strong emotional reactions (deep desire, passion, excitement, among other) towards the sexual act itself. In the shower scene he tells Top that their sexual encounter was "okay" and, during their first time, Mew simply lies down and lets himself be pleased (in case anyone is wondering, yes, asexual people can feel physical pleasure because they're still people and physical pleasure is a natural response of the body to stimuli).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Actually, Mew is completely fine being a virgin. Even so, he's not sex repulsed so he's fine with the idea of having sex. Although he doesn't have a terrible time doing it, he certainly doesn't enjoy it. And, like many asexual people, he feels pressured to have sex. However, it's important to note that Mew didn't have sex against his will. In fact, like many asexual people who decide to have sex for different reasons, Mew had sex with Top because he considered it important when it came to forming an intimate relationship.
Based on all this information we can say that, although someone's sexual orientation is something very particular that everyone experiences and defines internally (therefore it's difficult to know with certainty someone's sexual orientation), we can say that Mew is a homo-romantic asexual person. This means that Mew doesn't feel sexual attraction but does feel romantic attraction to people of the same gender. In turn, his attitude towards sex is neutral (he neither takes a sex-favorable stance nor rejects the idea of having sex).
Regarding your question about control or sex as something inherent in relationships, I don't think either of these two desires is unhealthy. Actually, we all want to have some degree of control in our lives, otherwise we would live in a constant state of anxiety and panic. Control is unhealthy when it becomes a necessity and an obsession. Control also becomes unhealthy when someone tries to maintain control through questionable attitudes that affect others negatively. I also don't think the idea of not wanting to have sex is unhealthy. Sex isn't a prerequisite for romantic relationships (in fact, there are countless healthy romantic relationships that don't include sex), our degree of sexual attraction doesn't define us. In terms of sexual health, a healthy and positive relationship with one's sexuality involves being able to identify one's own limits and respect them. I believe that the thought of “avoiding sex or not wanting to have sex” as unhealthy is related to the pathologization of asexuality. However, it's of utmost importance to remember that asexuality is not a problem to be solved.
I am sorry to dwell on so much Anon but I consider this topic extremely significant and valuable to discuss. Of course, feel free to disagree with me. I hope I answered your questions!

Let's talk about Ray's dad
So by the time we meet Ray's dad, the only parents we've met are Sand's mom and Boston's dad; a "good" parent, who has a good relationship with her kid and is affectionate, and a "bad" parent, who literally calls his kid a jackass and is generally obnoxious and doesn't seem to be super involved in his life.
Enter Ray's dad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's immediately combative and angry, doesn't open with asking after Ray's health, just right to scolding.
And it isn't worried parent scolding. It's just angry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's mad because he had to deal with the cops, because he had to disrupt his evening.
(Sand is the best boy, because he is staying close to Ray, he isn't abandoning him with his father, who he knows Ray doesn't have a great relationship with. He's still worried about Ray, even if he's also rightfully mad)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's mad because the car is damaged, and it was expensive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ray is disappointed, he's hurt, but he's not surprised that his dad still hasn't asked about his injuries.
And his dad just tells him to stop being sarcastic, and doubles down on all the ways Ray could have messed up his life and inconvenience him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Sand, witnessing all of this, realizing how much of who Ray is is about this interaction that he's witnessing. How much of Ray's damage is because he doesn't have a parent in his corner.
All Ray's dad can talk about is the social fallout associated with drunk driving, social consequences that will affect him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And onto making threats.
He mentions Ray getting sober, but it's not out of concern for Ray's health, or his future:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's because he doesn't want to take the time to have to clean up after him. To care about Ray's life.
And Ray is clearly used to hearing these things from his dad. He looks so resigned, like his dad has been telling him "I don't have time to care about you" his whole life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, the kill shot. (It's me, it killed me.)
Confirmation that the neglect and the resentment are a pattern. That they're just how Ray's dad speaks to him, how he thinks about him.
How Ray learned that he is a burden.
And Sand realizes it when we do.
Tumblr media
Just.
We have all seen how unconcerned with his drinking Ray's friends all are. Mew made one single sincere comment about Ray's health, and it was in a flashback. All other mentions of Ray drinking to much are framed as Ray is the problem, not that Ray's drinking is the problem. And they all still encourage and enable his addiction: they don't find places to hang out that don't involve alcohol, they laugh off his neediness, etc.
And here, his dad can't even be bothered to ask about how he's feeling. His own father can't manage to frame his concern about Ray's drinking as concern about Ray as a person. And going by Ray's words, he hasn't ever really bothered to, and he didn't care much for his wife.
The cruelty of having watched your wife drink herself to death and do nothing, and then watch your son spiral into addiction, and do nothing but berate him is next level, and it breaks my heart.

Episode 4 of Only Friends
Well, that was quite the episode. I’m going to be discussing stuff that happened, so if you’re aware of anything in the episode that upsets you please bear that in mind. I don’t intend to be all in your face about it but people have different limits. I myself was fine with the episode on first watch, but the second time it really hit me how there are certain things about Ray I relate to and I had a bad time for a little while. But *deep breath* it’s all good now and I’m ready to ramble. Also, I feel like my thoughts are going to be bouncing all over the place with all the various moving parts and stuff that happened this episode.
Tumblr media
So, might as well get straight to it, the big one, Ray (+ Mew + Sand). Ray, the human version of the Poor Boy t-shirt. His whole breakdown in the bathtub about being unloved, unwanted, how he ruined his mom’s life, man Khaotung delivered. I’m guessing it might be a case of his mom getting pregnant was unplanned/inconvenient - like his mom had to give up her career, or maybe having him trapped her with a man she didn’t love or in a bad relationship, which in turn led to her drinking and ignoring him, and ultimately to her death. Based on the younger version of Ray, he was what? Mid teens maybe. He said high school so maybe 14-16 range. Was his mom like that since his birth or did it start later, she slowly began resenting him?
I’m glad Mew had enough about him to go round and check on Ray. (I know his friends get some crap - Boston rightly so - about not caring about him, but there is only so much they can do if Ray isn’t ready, as he needs to be willing to help himself) Ray’s little face and his voice when he saw Mew had come though… “You’re here?” Surprise/relief that he’d put his faith in the right person. Mew really had answered his cry for help. Ray deserves a big hug. It’s not hard to see why he cares about Mew, why he answered his phone, why he would support Mew’s relationship with Top even though he dislikes Top, and yes, I’m sure jealousy is part of it, but there is genuine concern about the kind of person Top is, and if he’s good enough. But yeah, whether it’s romantic love or something else, I’m not sure. I imagine it’s a bit of a mix. He sees Mew as having saved him so there’s probably a bit of seeing him as his hero, the only person who, up to that point (or that we know of), had shown any affection or concern for him and it might be those feelings warped into a romantic love, or maybe it’s just the desperate need to keep Mew close, keep that one ‘good’ relationship and person at his side and he has mistaken his feelings for love beyond that of friendship. Ray is a whole bag of emotions and trauma, and untangling those for him to explore his feelings about both his past and what’s happening now will be hard and most likely hurt him and people around him (and me!).
I’m glad we got to see what happened regarding the video and the kiss and well, to say I’m disappointed in Boston and Top is an understatement - will talk more about them later. Also, I know Boston is a bad friend, but seriously, knowing everything about Ray and still messing with his head last episode and even calling Ray a burden back in episode 1, Boston you are the absolute worst lol.
But anyway, the kiss, the one in the past. I’m sad Mew couldn’t return Ray’s feelings and it must have been hard to hear that he was perhaps the only thing that was keeping Ray from hurting himself. 2 years ago, so he’s 19/20 yrs old, being told that must have been rough and a lot of responsibility, and then the fear of what Ray might do if Mew rejected him. That change in music seems like a reflection of Mew’s anxiety of the situation. I do like Mew and that from what we’ve seen he is pretty straightforward and honest. He kissed Ray back, but as he’s said, up until Top, no one had been able to make his heart tremble. I wonder how things might have changed if he had felt something. Would Ray have been able to get a handle on his drinking? Despite 2 years passing, he’s still in the same place, maybe worse where his drinking is concerned. Could he have changed? Or would he just have made them both miserable? Guess we might end up finding out as him and Sand get closer.
Tumblr media
Skipping back to the present and ahhhh Ray nooooo. I don’t agree with him kissing Mew and am glad he was called out for his behaviour, but I do feel like I understand why he did it, or at least see why he might have. First, we had Boston messing with him, bringing his feelings of ‘love’ back to the surface and also adding fuel to his worries about Top - don’t be a side character, do something before it’s too late, ie save Mew from Top. We also have Mew, he’s told Ray he phoned Top for help first and he’s also trying to push Ray’s feelings towards Sand (I believe Mew was doing so with good intentions, wanting to see Ray happy and have someone now Top has taken a chunk of his time), but I feel like Ray pushed back against that. I believe he has been feeling something for Sand, even if just out of curiosity, but in a way that’s a betrayal to his feelings for Mew, the person he literally owes his life to. I imagine he’s confused and desperate to reaffirm that Mew is the one he loves. Mew is telling him to be with someone who loves and takes care of him and for Ray that person is Mew. So, I get it, but don’t agree with it. Glad he apologised again at the end and I’m glad Mew was able to accept the apology. I feel like he backed down from pressing Ray further about the ‘why’ behind the kiss, maybe not wanting to distress Ray who looked to struggle when Mew asked. I hope they can maintain their friendship. I know Ray can’t change how he feels about Mew overnight. Whether Mew fully knew about Ray still liking him, I’m not sure, but either way, it’s all out there now, so hopefully, Ray can move forward.
Tumblr media
And talking of where he should be heading in his attempt to move on, him and Sand. I don’t know if it’s because it’s First and Khaotung, or just the way they are portraying the characters, but they have the most ‘romantic’ chemistry at the moment for me (Nick and Boston has so far been more primal, sexual, and then Mew and Top… I don’t even know what theirs is, it’s mostly anxiety inducing is what. I don’t know how to explain it but it’s like my stomach drops and both characters give off vibes of wanting control).
I love seeing Ray and Sand together. I love Ray’s puppy eyes. I love that Sand can’t say no to Ray’s puppy eyes. Sand seems a pretty strong-willed guy so if he really didn’t want to do something I’m sure he would say so. He had no problems communicating to Ray about how he felt at the music store and I’m glad he didn’t actually scold Ray and call him any names. There was just this strange sadness when Ray said ‘Burden on Society’. I don’t know if Sand sensed anything, but I think him discussing his boundaries, like with Ray wanting to buy him things, and that he isn’t something Ray can pick up to play with when he’s lonely to then forget about until the next time, I think Ray needs that. Other than money, we still don’t don’t know what kind of relationship he has with his father, or if he had any positive role models/relationships growing up that would help him learn about things such as boundaries and making real connections with other people, not just by throwing money around. I do believe Ray cares about Sand’s feelings, not necessarily because he sees him as special or for romantic reasons, but Sand is a person in his life now and it feels like Ray doesn’t intend to upset people on purpose, he wants to be cared for but also wants to be able to care for others, even as far as to ‘save’ them. I like that Ray is able to realise when he’s in the wrong and apologise, he did it in episode 1, and a couple of times in this episode. People make mistakes, not everyone can admit to them and apologise.
Tumblr media
The record store scenes were lovely. The conversation about music. The suggestion that Ray is stuck in the past with his mother’s music and his trauma, and with his feelings for Mew. That discovering new bands brings Sand happiness and the implication that Ray should do the same, step outside that damn room that he’s surrounded himself with his mom’s records and find something new to explore. To find himself a little bit of happiness. I loved the small smile from Ray as he seemed to be considering Sand’s words. Chronologically, we then have them listening to music and staring and hand touching. The way Sand looks at Ray *dreamy sigh*. It was nice to see Ray in a moment of peace, at least that’s what it felt like. A moment to just pause the world and as Sand said “let music do the work.” And so, after going to Mew’s to apologise, we’re then back in a bath tub, bookending the episode nicely. That flashback though, yet again, can not blame Ray for clinging onto Mew and what feelings he had for him. Ray of sunshine *cries* I interpret the end as him making peace with his feelings, or at the very least, realising that no matter what, nothing more can ever come from them and so it’s time to move on, even if he just takes a tiny step in the direction of the owner of the Poor Boy t-shirt. I really hope that no matter what heartbreak lies ahead, these two find a way to a happy ending together, even if it’s Ray goes to rehab, gets some therapy and we skip ahead however many months, and they meet up again afterwards. So a fresh start and we’re left hopeful they’ll work things out.
Tumblr media
Okay, that first part might have been way too long, but I’m bias towards Ray and so… that’s how I roll lol. The next bits might be shorter, or they might not lol. Next the Boston and Nick and Top (+ Sand) mess.
Boston, you are the worst. I mean, I kind of get filming your friends in a ‘haha look at these idiots, I’m so teasing them tomorrow’ kind of way, but still, dick move. And you know what another dick move is? Screwing with your friend’s kinda boyfriend (still confused on how long it’s been - under 3 months based on what Boston said last ep - and what Top and Mew consider themselves to be, as Top kept referring to Mew as his boyfriend last ep and this one and Mew complained about Top not introducing him as his boyfriend to Beam at the silent disco), and then for his ultimate dick move, we have Boston forcing himself on Top. I’m glad Top actively pushed Boston off him this time and told him a few home truths. I said before it feels more about Boston’s pride and some weird one-sided rivalry/jealousy. Like even in the flashback, he seemed to be competing with Ray, but also dragging Mew into the conversation with Cheum. Like ‘I can’t beat Ray, but what about Mew? I’m sexier and a better option than him right?’. Honestly, I feel like, if gmmtv would let us have nice things and let Neo and Khao out of the friends zone for a minute, Boston would be that guy to comfort Ray and maybe makeout/sleep with him just to show he was that little bit better than Mew - ‘at least I fucked ya’. He seems to have no remorse over anything at the moment. Whether he grows as a person or is a dick until the end, I guess we’ll have to wait and see. We got a nice bit of info about his dad if anyone was looking to really mess things up for him. Not looking at anyone in particular… Nick.
Tumblr media
So, Nick. Boston really should have changed his passcode after Nick fixed his phone lol. He is walking a dangerous line of obsession and I’m not sure exactly where he’ll fall by the end. He was like a smitten kitten in the first couple of episodes, and he looked at Boston with hope and adoration, but there was a significant difference in how Boston’s words worked (or rather didn’t seem to) this episode when they were together. It currently stands as him wanting to get Boston, for them to be in love, but, depending where both his and Boston’s games take them, I feel like it might just come down to him wanting to ruin Boston in the end. You don’t love me? Well sucks to be you. I am here for Nasty Nick and his obsessive listening to Top and Boston moaning (poor Sand though - he did not need to hear that lol) And then he brings Top into it, and in turn Sand (and we find out Top stole Sand’s ex - gonna assume that person will pop up at some point). Well, everybody will know about Top and Boston but Mew at this point. I have this horrible feeling when stuff comes out Ray will find out Sand already knew and that might be one of many reasons they have problems.
So Top and Mew. Their relationship is the strangest to me. It might be because as the audience we know more of what Top’s been doing behind Mew’s back, see more of his smug smirky face that I want to punch occasionally, whereas we don’t know that much about Mew as an individual, but I don’t know… *stares at them*. I know Top got Mew’s heart all a flutter but sometimes, I’m left questioning what Mew sees in Top and does he actually like him? They can have some ridiculously cute moments, the disco, the Photo Booth, in the shower. Then they have some really off feeling and tense, challenging each other moments, Top coming off as possessive and pulling him away from his friends, the reset scene at laser tag, the scenes at the end of this episode. I like that Mew isn’t a pushover but getting with Top seems exhausting to me.
Tumblr media
Another thing I like is that Mew doesn’t judge Top based on his past or who he’s slept with. Like I said Mew seems to be honest and straightforward and he wants Top to be the same with him. And I’m very much a judge you by what you do now not your past kind of person myself (obviously there are some exceptions to that). The plane in Top’s room got me curious. Is there a Boeing? I assume so as even before he told Mew and the only B I could think of at the time was Boston, I was like, surely not. Boston doesn’t seem in the least bit sentimental and not sure what a plane has to do with anything, but I did have second thoughts as the camera lingered and shifted focus from the plane to the model car that looks very much like Boston’s behind it. It might mean nothing, or maybe ‘Boeing’ will show up, the shot is framing two issues that can come between Top and Mew in the future - Boston and this Boeing person.
Top keeps pulling me in and has me thinking, okay maybe he is trying to be a better person, he just keeps fucking up, you know, like people do, and then just as quickly, I’m screaming trash at him. Where as Boston falls on the love to hate him side of villainy, Top keeps sticking his head over the line into just hate him territory. We’ll have to see where things go. I did think he’d called Beam over for sex at first, but not seeing the scene play out I wondered if it was something else - like just hang out, drink and sleep, as Top was clearly feeling guilty thinking back to moments with Mew and Boston, so I thought he might have trouble sleeping. As it was it was drugs. One way to knock yourself out I guess… whether it’s always just been drugs with Beam, looking back at the conversation at the silent disco, who knows, and I would have given him the benefit of the doubt, as I do want to believe he wants to change, but he’d already got arsey over Ray, Mew’s friend, being there and apparently not happy that he got his knickers in a twist over a kiss from 2 years ago, so was doubting Mew when he said it stopped at the kiss, and THEN initiated some weird deal for him stopping drugs. Again, we know more stuff than Mew, but with that music choice too, it felt all kinds of sleazy to me. If I was Mew I would not have been in the mood for sexy shenanigans, but hey, you do you, and hand jobs don’t have to be that deep. Fucking loved it when Mew said no penetration, take it or leave it lol.
OKAY. I think I’m done. There were probably other things I wanted to comment on, but the rambling was strong with this one lol. Looking forward to Episode 5.

Chapter 2: King’s Landing attack
Tumblr media
Hello, well thank you to my few readers.
Pairing: The Hound x Sansa Stark
Chapter summary: Sansa is still a prisoner in King’s Landing, until Stannis Baratheon attacks King’s Landing and...
Chapter warnings: violence, blood. Some lines from George R. R. Martin "A clash of kings" book.
Thanks @vase-of-lilies for the banner

Tumblr media
“You mew like a suckling babe,” his brother hissed at him. “Princes aren’t supposed to cry.”
“Prince Aemon the Dragonknight cried the day Princess Naerys wed his brother Aegon,” Sansa Stark said, “and the twins Ser Arryk and Ser Erryk died with tears on their cheeks after each had given the other a mortal wound.”
“Be quiet, or I’ll have Ser Meryn give you a mortal wound,” Joffrey told his betrothed.
Sansa remained silent as she had been ordered to, fearing for her life every day. Every day, she received a punishment for a wrong word, for a glance, or whether it was her brother Robb doing something. She always paid for her own or others' faults, whether they were minor or serious.
The narrow streets were lined by men of the City Watch, holding back the crowd with the shafts of their spears. Ser Jacelyn Bywater went in front, heading a wedge of mounted lancers in black ringmail and golden cloaks. Behind him came Ser Aron Santagar and Ser Balon Swann, bearing the king’s banners, the lion of Lannister and crowned stag of Baratheon.
So, it followed King Joffrey, with Sansa trailing just behind him, her thick auburn hair flowing to her shoulders beneath a net of moonstones. Two of the Kingsguard flanked the couple, the Hound on the king’s right hand and Ser Mandon Moore to the left of the Stark girl.
Next came Tommen, snuffling, with Ser Preston Greenfield in his white armor and cloak, and then Cersei, accompanied by Ser Lancel and protected by Meryn Trant and Boros Blount. Tyrion fell in with his sister. After them followed the High Septon in his litter, and a long tail 314 of other courtiers—Ser Horas Redwyne, Lady Tanda and her daughter, Jalabhar Xho, Lord Gyles Rosby, and the rest. A double column of guardsmen brought up the rear. The unshaven and the unwashed stared at the riders with dull resentment from behind the line of spears. I like this not one speck, Tyrion thought. Bronn had a score of sellswords scattered through the crowd with orders to stop any trouble before it started. Perhaps Cersei had similarly disposed her Kettleblacks. Somehow Tyrion did not think it would help much. If the fire was too hot, you could hardly keep the pudding from scorching by tossing a handful of raisins in the pot. They crossed Fishmonger’s Square and rode along Muddy Way before turning onto the narrow, curving Hook to begin their climb up Aegon’s High Hill. A few voices raised a cry of “Joffrey! All hail, all hail!” as the young king rode by, but for every man who picked up the shout, a hundred kept their silence. The Lannisters moved through a sea of ragged men and hungry women, breasting a tide of sullen eyes.
Sansa observed, fearful, all the misery surrounding them, but most of all, she watched the faces of the starving and angry common folk. In just a few moments, the situation took a turn for the worse: to their left, three gold cloaks went down under the surge, and then the crowd was rushing forward, trampling the fallen men. The Hound had vanished behind, though his riderless horse galloped beside them. Tyrion saw Aron Santagar pulled from the saddle, the gold-and-black Baratheon stag torn from his grasp. Ser Balon Swann dropped the Lannister lion to draw his longsword. He slashed right and left as the fallen banner was ripped apart, the thousand ragged pieces swirling away like crimson leaves in a stormwind. In an instant they were gone. Someone staggered in front of Joffrey’s horse and shrieked as the king rode him down. Whether it had been man, woman, or child Tyrion could not have said. Joffrey was galloping at his side, whey-faced, with Ser Mandon Moore a white shadow on his left.
Sansa tried to break free, to escape from the enraged crowd. She lost the royal procession and, for a brief moment, thought she could return to the Red Keep on her own, believing no one would pay attention to her. But that wasn't the case, three men surrounded her. It was then that she understood something terrible was about to happen to her. She ran as fast as she could, but with little success. She found herself on the ground and dragged away by the men who pursued her.
Sansa screamed in fear, realizing their intentions. She screamed loudly, but none of those three seemed to hear her. Indeed, it seemed to excite them. In no time, their laughter turned into cries of pain: Sandor Clegane arrived to rescue her, eviscerating and slaying her attackers.
“It’s all right, little bird. You’re safe now!” he reassured her, pulling her to her feet and carrying her on his shoulders, he carried her back to the Red Keep. The young Stark feared she would vomit or faint during that journey, she saw severed arms and heads, blood along the streets of King's Landing, disembowelled bodies, scattered entrails.
The Hound finally took her inside the fortified walls and handmaidens surrounded her, the first to ask her how she was was Tyrion "Are you hurt, my lady?"
Sansa couldn't speak, too shaken by that horrible sight, it was Clegane who spoke.
“The little bird is bleeding,” he said. “Someone take her back to her cage and take care of her.”
Her handmaidens rushed to obey, leading Sansa away.
Sansa ate almost nothing that day or the following days, the experience she lived, had a profound impact on her. Master Frenken visits her every day, even Tyrion Lannister - the uncle of her future husband - often visited her, he was kind, it almost seemed like she could trust him, but then Sansa remembered that he was still a Lannister just as she remembered the words of the Hound "Look around and smell carefully: they're all liars here..." the Stark girl turned over in her bed, no, she couldn't trust Tyrion either.
Her betrothed never visited her, only her mother the Queen Regent, Cersei, had come once, told her to get well soon and then with a smirk she added she would blossom soon and not too soon after that moment, her son and Sansa could have married and then give birth future princes and princesses. If Sansa had heard these words months ago, she’d filled with pride and enthusiasm, but now? The idea troubled her deeply.
She no longer wanted to marry the Queen's son, her heart no longer beat for him, not after the horrors he subjected her to, not after he had her beaten, not after he continually threatened her with death. No, Sansa, he couldn't anymore.
He wanted to escape, but… how? When?
The Guards were everywhere, every corridor was always filled with one or more Guards, often the Hound or Ser Meryn roamed the corridors, no, Sansa just couldn't do it, not alone.
The moment came on a night without stars, on a night where the sky was a riot of colors that went from green to orange, from red to yellow with shades of emerald and jade, the air smelled of burning, Sansa had taking refuge in her rooms completely shrouded in darkness, only by opening the curtains she could observe all the colors reflected in the sky.
Sansa started to step back, she was scared, she intended to take advantage of that situation, but she had no idea exactly how to do it... someone coughed behind her and Sansa jumped and turned around. She saw him for a moment, all black and green, the blood on his face dark as tar, his eyes glowing like a dog’s in the sudden glare.
“What are you doing in my rooms?” she asked to the Hound.
“I’m going.”
“Going?”
“The little bird repeats whatever she hears. Going, yes.”
“Where will you go?”
“Away from here. Away from the fires. Go out the Iron Gate, I suppose. North somewhere, anywhere.”
“You won’t get out,” Sansa said. “The queen’s closed up Maegor’s, and the city gates are shut as well.”
“Not to me. I have the white cloak. And I have this.” He patted the pommel of his sword. “The man who tries to stop me is a dead man. Unless he’s on fire.” He laughed bitterly.
“You’d come with me.” he said, “I could keep you safe,” he rasped. “They’re all afraid of me. No one would hurt you again, or I’d kill them.”
“With you?” Sansa asked again.
“The little birds just can't keep from repeating everything… what do you want to become one of those birds with colorful feathers?” he teased her.
“I'm not going with you.” Sansa said with a courage she didn't think she possessed "You are always so... harsh, mean... I don't..." the young woman stopped.
“Am I too cruel for Your Grace's delicacy?” Sandor asked, looking her straight in the eyes “I'm honest. It's the world that's cruel." he informed her roughly “The world is not made for pretty ones like you, the world is a cruel place, if you can’t protect yourself, then you die and someone else lives.”
The Hound suddenly grabbed Sansa by the wrist and Sansa groaned in fear, she feared he would kill her but instead the man just got close to her face and said "Come with me." it wasn't a question, it was just a statement, a statement said in a tone that Sansa had never heard before, or at least the Hound never used that tone of voice.
“I – I need to change.” Sansa only said.
"There's no time." saying these words, the man dragged her away with him.
The Hound moved with incredible speed and grace for a large man like he was, Sansa struggled to keep up with him, she almost had to run. When he opened the door that would allow them to reach the stables, the earth shook and everything around them began to catch fire, the men screamed. Sandor Clegane staggered for an instant in the face of those flames, then abruptly woke up and started running again. They bumped into fleeing men, screaming women, Sansa couldn't even understand who they were hitting just to reach their goal, suddenly something hit her head and Sansa lost consciousness...
Closing remarks... that's how things really went. Sansa should have runaway with the Hound even in the books and in the tv series. Agree or disagree?
Please let me know what you think. If you'd like, if you had questions or comments you could send either in the comments section or my inbox. If you don't like my story don't read, so please no rude comments towards the story, the people who like this story, or me.

When Mew said "I forgive you but I won't forget" I scoffed.
The concept of "forgive and forget" always irked me because like, saying you will forgive but not forget to mean you will still feel resentment about what the other party did means you're literally just lying about the forgiveness part.
To be honest, forgive and forget is ridiculous conceptually. Forgetting someone's serious transgression against you is generally infeasible even if you have memory problems. On the other hand, forgiving someone — that is, no longer wanting to punish them or be angry at them, is feasible even if it's hard oftentimes.
People say shit they don't mean in lieu of actually changing their actions all the time but there's few phrases where people just, declare their insincerity?
I don't think any amount of grovelling on Boston's part would have made Mew forgive Boston. I mean, he didn't even really forgive Top. That who Boston wants to date and who he wants to sleep with barely overlap, and that who he wants to have platonic relationships with and who he wants to sleep with overlap at all is unacceptable to Mew.
Cheum and Ray tolerate it because Cheum has me and mine centred morality and she files people under "mine" at the drop of a hat see Top lmao and Ray's a follower and a sideman when it comes to things he isn't possessive over, but Mew cannot accept such.
The resentment Mew has towards Boston isn't primarily because Boston slept with Top, because Mew didn't give a shit about the manipulation involved and also because if Mew and Top were just in the talking stage as Mew insisted, the reasonable response would be to tell Top that he wants to be exclusive. Mew had all his eggs in the topmew basket from day, he's just a control freak.
No, the anger is from the revelation that Boston compartmentalizes relationships just as much as Mew, but just in a completely different way. Boston isn't going to grow into being monogamous.
Boston slept with Top because he though topmew wasn't serious and that raymew was feasible but he kept it a secret anyway because he knew Mew would be upset about it even if he was going to dump or tire of Top soon. In Boston's mind, that's being thoughtful. Boston acting in accordance with his (completely wrong) read of the situation and not according to The Rules is unacceptable because it makes stark how arbitrary The Rules are.
It doesn't matter how heavy on the respectability politics Mew is, outside their queer bubble he and Boston are considered more similar than not. Mew can resign himself to being seen this way by outsiders since he spends all his time in the bubble anyway but he can't accept such from his "and his" because Boston is someone he keeps around to feel superior to.
That's also why Mew was so angry that it was Boston specifically. If Top had slept with some random guy it doesn't really detract from the vibes of Mew turning a Playboy into boyfriend material. If it was Ray somehow Mew would have found out immediately instead of having to stew in being wrong about having control.
Even though Ray and Cheum were amenable to Boston being back in the friend group it's good that Mew just kind of vetoed that. It would be too cruel to have Boston go back into his slot as the mortality Duff on top of being heartbroken from being incompatible with Nick, degreeless, and imminently going abroad to start his life over outside of the closet.

When there are no english subs to explain the messiness that is this groups' relationship chart, but thank god for those who translated in the live chat.
These were the connections highlighted by the cast:
Top > Sand - "It's complicated" (This had me shook. WAAHT? If there's some history between these two and Ray doesn't like Top already because he's taken Mew, then this is going to be SO messy)
Mew > Nick - Supporter (Nick is sleeping with Boston, who is his best friend, so makes sense)
Boston > Ray - Best Friend (We already know this)
Nick > Top - Jealous Friend (Top is sleeping with Boston, who Nick is in love with)
Namcheun > Boston - Resentful Friend (We see her scolding Boston in the trailer)
Ray > Mew - Crush on Friend (We also already know this)
Sand > Namcheun - Wants to be friends (Possibly in an effort to get to know Ray's group of friends)
It does make you wonder how much more tangled that web is going to look once the series finishes.

I was reading page 28 of the secret pages and found that Chara was confused when referred to as a "they." What led them to embracing the pronoun?
Chara had already resented gender norms for a while before then. A lot of it came down to their birth parents really, really pushing toxic masculinity and shit on them- the whole idea of not crying, not showing weakness, etc, etc. That and the things they found themself drawn to - flowers, magical girl anime, the idea of growing their hair out. That met some definite pushback, especially with them being treated as essentially a "presentable heir" to keep out of obligation and show off at fancy rich people parties. While their birth parents "placated" them with video games and other items here and there, it was rather halfhearted and mostly to shut them up and keep them out of the way. And some of the shows and movies and games they were interested in, they had to buy for themself. They really hated the idea that certain interests, colors, etc HAD to be gender-specific. And that led to them resenting this sorta binary thinking and they just didn't really understand it was like... a gender identity thing because it was 2010 and they were only 10 years old before they ran off to give their birth parents some "consequences" and then... Hello monsters. Hello they pronouns??? You can do that??? And just... this idea of casting aside their assigned gender and not having to BE one or the other was really appealing to them and the simple act of embracing they pronouns was important not only in understanding themself but also shedding at least some of the baggage of their past life. The sad thing is that over the next three years, they still struggled to unlearn all the things that had been pushed on them throughout their life, which is why they didn't get too adventurous with fashion, even though Toriel and Asgore would've encouraged them to try a cute skirt if they wanted to, or to dye their hair or any number of things. It's a big part of why they related to Mew Mew so much once they realized what was going on with her... and then felt TERRIBLE for the way they joked about her before. She was very relatable to them and also very cool.
The GOOD news is that now that they have been brought back, they have an opportunity to try again. To actually mess around with fashion and gender presentation and explore more interests openly and build up a better understanding of themself. Lots of cool trans role models, a fellow nonbinary human kid in Frisk. Obviously, all of that will have to wait until the bigger conflict resolves, but there is absolutely hope for them to just become a much happier, more confident self.

Only Friends main cast and how & why they hook up with each other headcanons
Boston & Nick, Sand & Ray, Boston & Top: already happened so we know how that'll go
Top & Mew: with all their 4D chess that they're playing, something's gotta give at some point and that's how they'll finally have sex
Top & Sand: Sand mentioned being hit on a lot + having one night stands somewhat frequently and Top goes to the bar that Sand works at. Totally feasible that they hooked up at one point. Though in the preview for Ep 3 Sand says that he only has sex with someone once if it's just a hook up, which I wonder became his rule before or after Top
Ray & Boston: messed up proxy fucking where they're both thinking about Mew and Top respectively and are making things worse for themselves by doing it
Mew & Boston: happens after Top hooks up with Boston again and before Mew and Top actually have sex. Mew finds out about Top and Boston and gets revenge on Top by hooking up with Boston instead of him (also a very pointed "well I had to see what was so good about him that you'd pick him over me" from both parties)
Mew & Ray: alternate way where Mew gets revenge on Top for cheating on him, sine it seems like Boston is planning to play on Mew and Ray's relationship to make Top sleep with him instead (Mew: oh you thought I was messing around with him so you got with Boston? well, I guess now I actually do need to hook up with him). Poor Ray doesn't know how to say no to Mew, even if he knows he's just being used to get back at Top
Sand & Boston: similar situation to Sand & Top. Boston is a frequent customer at the bar where Sand works and hooks up with people all the time, statistically it probably happened and neither one thought too much about it and have kinda forgotten it happened and only remember when Boston runs into Sand after hooking up with Nick at their apartment.
Sand & Nick: they're roommates who have both been dragged into this mess of a friend group and are both in less than ideal situations with their fuck buddy/friend with benefits. enough depressed heart-to-hearts about the matter and they decide it might be better to simply fuck each other instead
Ray & Nick: Nick finds out that Boston is still sleeping with other people and has a crisis, Ray is being self-destructive and gets into an argument with Sand. they run into each other without knowing all the connections between them and hook up in a hopes of solving their problems, completely unaware how many more problems that they are causing for themselves
Top & Nick: Nick finds out that the guy Boston is still hung up over is Top and decides that he's going to fuck him as well because why shouldn't he? If Boston can do it, he should be able to do it too and maybe he'd find out what all the fuss is about. Probably after Mew found out about the cheating so he's not talking to Top at the moment, and Top figures out that he might as well sleep with the guy propositioning him because how much worse can things get?
Ray & Top: this is just straight up hate-fucking, no two ways about it. Ray resents Top for hurting Mew, Top doesn't like Ray due to the jealousy as well (since Ray's closeness to Mew seems to be what breaks him with Boston). Mew is mad at them both and off doing something (or someone) else. They run into each other at the bar while drunk and then pick a fight that escalates to them having sex
Mew & Sand: I don't know exactly how this would happen, I just know it's probably the worst thing to happen to Ray and he will make some bad decisions if he finds out it happened
Mew & Nick: .......ok I've been thinking but I seriously can't come up with a situation where they would end up hooking up together. they might be the only ones who won't have sex within the main cast because I'm at a loss of thinking how this one would happen. unless Nick and Top hook up and Mew finds out and then goes on a mission to have sex with every boy that Top has in order to prove a point to him

only friends thoughts
i'm probably going to do this every week so stay tuned for that ig.
this is gonna be divided into sections because it would be a jumbled mess otherwise. i apologise for how messy this is my laptop is breaking and so am i (i'm sleep deprived.)
Boston: first of all this man sucks so bad like truly a bottom of the barrel friend, i wanna take a second to talk about the college scene in episode one where their giving the presentation, i personally feel like each role their given in the project reflects who they are in the friendship group, and Boston says himself he's the yes man his friends say things and he just blindly agrees i feel like that's exactly who he is in terms of group dynamics originally you assign this to Chuem however she clearly has her friends best interest at heart whereas Boston just goes along with whatever because he doesn't care. everyone else brings something to the table Chuem, Mew and Ray all seem to care about each other and in project terms they all have roles Mew and Chuem do the heavy lifting Ray provides a worthy location. All Boston does is go along with it he seems completely detached from the others. i saw someone say that Nick is who Boston used to be and as much as i love that idea i take that and i raise you Mew is who Boston used to be and that's why he resents him so much only i think Boston's situation was crueller i think Boston was used because while Top's intentions aren't entirely pure he does genuinely harbour some kind of affection towards Mew. i don't think Boston got that i think Boston got used purely for sex i think Boston was a virgin who fell in love with someone like Top and that person took advantage of him. and the reason he resents Mew so hard is because Mew got everything he didn't.
while Boston is a a massive dickhead a lot of the fandom still really like him he suffers from Vegas syndrome because both him and Vegas are terrible people who fuck up the lives of those around them they are also incredibly interesting to analyse.
Mew: in my opinion Mew is not half as bad as people think he's going to be Mew is the fictional equivalent of people who are virgins but think the can do shit because of how much fanfiction they read (i mean that affectionately.) i don't think he's an innocent baby who has no idea what he's doing but i don't think he's a master manipulator i think the main reason we see him that way is because of episode one but that episode is told mainly from his perspective i think we see how Mew views himself not how he actually is. i think Mew is a bookworm with a hero complex like he's been warned about Top from multiple people so he wants to flip the script Mew's trying to outplay the player. i think Mew knows Top might get bored and leave him so he's trying to get under his skin but he seems to genuinely like him.
i don't think Mew knows how Ray feels if he does he would have brought it up already. bottom line i think Mew's flying to close to the sun and doesn't know it yet.
Top: first off Top was assaulted this episode, i've seen people use the shower scene as proof that he's unfaithful but i don't think that's true. we see multiple times that he's not interested in Boston he TELLS Boston multiple times that he doesn't see him like that, he's clearly uncomfortable in that scene he even tells Boston no. that scene is assault the only thing that scene proves about his relationship with Mew is that Top keeps secrets which makes sense because he is new to the friendship group he doesn't know how close Mew and Boston are doesn't know if Mew will believe him, Tops place in the group is fragile it makes sense that he doesn't want to jeopardise it.
Top and Boston are different Boston tells Nick in episode two that Nick is his favourite he also tells Nick that they can either be fwb's or fuck buddies Boston doesn't do relationships while Top wants to date Mew and is trying to make Mew his boyfriend. Boston tells Mew that Top get's bored after a couple of months implying that while Boston is promiscuous Top is a serial dater or at least someone who hook ups with the same person more than once.
Ray: i feel like Ray views his money as his only redeeming trait and that's why he's so comfortable paying Sand to be his friend, we see that in the presentation scene as well (when asked what he is contributing he says that his dad gave him a house to use for the hostel.)
someone pointed out that Ray's mum died of alcohol poisoning and if that's true then i think that's such a meaningful scene.
i feel like a lot of the reason why Ray likes Mew is because Mew cares about him, like in his friendship group Mew is shown time and time again caring deeply for Ray the only other person who cares about Ray is Sand. Ray reminds me of those people who try and romanticise their suffering because that's all they can do, like he parties to be around people because he hates being alone and drinks to the point of unconsciousness constantly just so he doesn't have to be around himself.
Sand: i don't think Sand knows just how bad Ray's issues, are as far as he knows Ray is just a sad rich boy with mild alcoholic tendencies and i feel like most of their conflict is going to come from this.
i feel like him and Nick living together is such a good idea narratively like the possibilities are endless.
Nick: Nick kind of feels like Mew's foil, while Mew knows exactly what Top is capable of and tries to give as good as he gets, Nick has no idea what he's getting into, while he was originally interested in Boston sexually i feel like Nick really wants a genuine connection with Boston and got a situationship instead. Nick is the only one completely out of the loop, everyone kind of knows each other because of the bar but Nick is the only one who doesn't go. what makes his relationship with Boston more complicated is that when Nick asks what they are to each other and Boston gives him the options of friends with benefits or fuck buddies Nick immediately latches on to the lesser of two evils choosing fuck buddies to try and create distance between them to try and protect himself Boston basically takes away that option and insists that they become friends with benefits instead. one thing i haven't seen people mention is how after that scene Boston's behaviour towards Nick changes, he starts acting more affectionate; kissing his cheeks, using his childhood nickname being more touchy.
i feel like nick and Boston's relationship will get a somewhat happy ending (because it's gmmtv) but i feel like most of their issues won't be resolved on screen.
i don't think Nick has the best self esteem because of a multitude of things; teased for his appearance, hates having his photo taken, gave him himself a makeover/glow up because of that i don't think he's aware just how attractive he is, this could possibly end up playing a role in his relationship with Boston, as of now Boston is the only one we see openly find Nick attractive but if Boston brings Nick around to say the club that could definitely change and Boston could get jealous which would change their dynamic quite a bit. i see Nick getting tired of Boston's double standards and his 'one rule for you a different one for me' mentality.
Cheum: the most stable one in the friendship group, we don't know much about her and i truly hope that changes. she's the glue of the group. i love her relationship with April. i have a terrible feeling that something horrible happens to her (and the surfing accident was foreshadowing) i really hope i'm wrong.
yeah i really like this show, it's taken over my brain. i'm probably oing to post another one of these after episode 3.
