During exile, Tommy had tried so many times to throw away the compass but every time he tries he breaks down crying before being able to do it because he can't bring himself to hurt or break the last thing he has of Tubbo.

The closest he came too it was after his "party" he found out that Tubbo had lost his and felt like Tubbo never cared so why should he, Dream was the one thing keeping Tommy from thowing away the compass and it fucking worked

Tommy thinks that hurting the compass or damaging it in anyway will inadvertently hurt Tubbo.
