i am very new to learning quechua and am having trouble finding resources to learn, do you know any? i also need some pointers on how to learn a new language from scratch since i dont really know where to start
Imaynalla kasanki :)
I have a few resources, although the vast majority of them are from Spanish (I see an Argentine flag in your bio, so I'm hoping that isn't a problem).
English resources:
This website has extremely basic survival Quechua and audio in English, along with the romanization of words and phrases to pronounce them.
Here is extremely basic vocab for Bolivian Quechua; words only.
This wonderful source has a basic internet course for Quechua and if you explore it a bit includes a ton of information about the language along with places and people to contact that can help teach you.
Here is a very famous movie in Quechua with English subtitles that you can watch for free.
The movie Retablo is free on Tubi. It's about a Runa boy in Peru discovering his father isn't actually heterosexual and the repercussions he faces in the community and his own family because of it. Subtitles in English.
The Quechua Collective of New York periodically offers Quechua classes on Zoom, if you're willing to spend $90 for a 12-week course.
If you are extremely serious about learning Quechua, there are multiple universities that offer online courses with 101/201 usually in the Fall and 102/202 in the Spring. Purdue University, Oberlin College, Indiana University, UChicago, UPenn, University of Michigan, Northwestern University, East Carolina University, and the Ohio State University all offer courses, with all of them for sure offering online options except for UPenn and UMichigan--those I'm not sure. Expect to pay no less than $1500 for each course.
Spanish resources:
This podcast series is on Apple Podcasts and can help if you have a basic level already.
Here is an app from the Ministry of Tourism in Peru that can help with basics.
Here is a free online course for Quechua Chanka.
This is an extremely tedious but helpful guide pdf from Spanish.
Online games making the learning process a little less painful.
If you really want a resource for the Collao dialect and don't mind dropping some coin, this course is about $15 and will give you a certificate at the end.
This is made by the same people right above in the Collao dialect, but free.
Here's a super rare audio course for Kichwa Inga made by Indiana University.
Here's an online translator that can theoretically translate from English too but works best in Spanish.
These Spanish Youtube channels teach some Quechua.
This monstrosity of a pdf that is half grammar/pronunciation and half vocab, in the Sureño dialect but the Peruvian one rather than Bolivian.
Here's a ginormous pdf of a Quechua-Spanish dictionary.
This pdf on Scribd. Scribd makes you do a free trial, but you can download as much material to your pc as your heart desires. I highly recommend that you do a trial, find and download as many relevant resources as you can, and then end the trial before the 30 days is up.
This wonderful human being's Instagram. T'ikita hasn't posted her usual reels and tiktoks lately but if you scroll back a little she has a ton of helpful videos in her Quechua Chic series with Bolivian Quechua. I also paid $25 a month to have Zoom lessons with her which we did using a mix of English and Spanish. She was amazing, but I feel like she would definitely prefer to teach in Spanish is why I'm putting her in this section. I think she may still do group classes but I'm not sure.
Wilfredo also teaches Bolivian Quechua from Spanish and has his WA number in his bio. My boyfriend took classes with him and seemed to enjoy it.
Qhalincha makes helpful instagram reels and offers group classes at an affordable price; I think she speaks Bolivian Quechua but I'm not 100% sure.
This is a general instagram account that teaches different dialects of Quechua.
This is like the above, but this Instagram has organized group courses seemingly at an affordable rate.
Peru's Catholic University has an online Quechua class (courses ranging from 1-2 months) that meets daily. The 2 month class is about $75.
Again, if you are EXTREMELY serious about learning Quechua, then the Centro Tinku program takes place in Cusco where you live with a Runa family and have the language taught to you in Spanish. If you're not attending a partner University with the organization, you may email [email protected] to enroll directly with Centro Tinku. The cost is a whopping $4100, but Centro Tinku also offers 50% scholarships on tuition costs to Latin American students not eligible for other funding. UMich has more info about it here.
Bilingual resources:
This nifty lil page has a basic course.
This one is also like the above.
This SUPER beyond helpful Discord channel where you have speakers to actually talk to.
Here is an entire Google Spreadsheet of affordable online Quechua teachers.
Listen to Renata Flores. She doesn't have many songs on here at the moment and isn't a native speaker, but I love her rap. She's super popular in Peru.
Italki has super cheap Quechua tutors. While most of the tutors teach in only Spanish and Peruvian/Cusco dialects, there is at least one who can teach from English a range of dialects such Boliviano, Cusco, and even Ecuadorian Kichwa.
I also have pdfs for Quechua resources including the insanely rare and critically endangered Cajamarca dialect, but considering the source has been taken down every time I see it pop up on the internet probably due to copyright violations, I 100% don't feel comfortable posting it here. If you trust me enough, I can email it to you or whomever seriously wants their hands on it.
Now, as for learning a new language, I would say don't even try to start until you've organized yourself a bit and set up goals for what you want to achieve. Sure, you want to learn Quechua, but there's always more learning to do with language acquisition. Where do you want to be in 3 months? Do you want to be able to introduce yourself and count and know colors? Start small, and build from there.
I think ChatGPT may be useful here too with creating outlines for achieving language learning goals if you prompt it with something along the lines of "I want to learn Quechua. I will spent 2 hours a day, 5 days a week studying. Set me up an outline and schedule I should follow in order to be conversational." (Yes, I used that exact prompt and it generated me a pretty solid learning schedule).
I will also always swear by flashcards and physically writing down new vocabulary and concepts. Practice speaking out loud to yourself even if it feels ridiculous. The Hellotalk app is also helpful as long as you are confident you can avoid random people insistently messaging you on it, and instead use it for native speaker interactions and corrections.
Best of luck <3

hello everynyan :3 /ref
4 the redacted match-ups ! not sure if you're still doing these or not bc i'll be damned i'd give up after the first 3 🙌🙌🙌 power 2 ya ! (if you ARE, in fact, not doing these anymore pls ignore this. this never happened. kay.)
What song are you fixated on at the moment? What lyric or verse, and why?
this was the hardest question bc i LOVEEMUSIC so bad i can never really pick ONE fav bc it changes every 2 seconds but !!! gun to my head as of rn i'd say -- "but not kiss" - faye webster
'i want to see you in my dreams,
but then forget.
we're meant to be,
but not yet.
you're all that i have,
but can't get.'
i chose this song primarily because of the aesthetics & instrumental,, + the feels - i love how the piano carries and portrays every feeling (dread? maybe?) alongside the vocalist ugh sick to my stomach /pos
as for the verses i've chosen i just. really like the way she sings them HA i guess depending on my current mood i might relate to the lyrics for .5 seconds due to a past relationship of mine that had me fuckedd anyway.
Do you love gargantuan Youtube video essays, and if so, which is your favorite and why?
i WISH i could enjoy these as much as others but i have the attention spam of a fucking goldfish i need to be stimulated 24/7. i cannot stare at the same face and occasional photo/clip for over 10 mins.
i might watch more of em if they had like a satisfying slime video in the corner or smth. i find i only watch ones that have a topic/interest of mine that i am actively curious about/into????if that makes sense??
for instance, the only one that comes to mind rn is "in defense of chat noir" by toon ruins UGH ITS SO GOOD i used to be a huge fan of miraculous so that defffinitely takes part in why i rewatch it every few months.
What is your go-to way to fall asleep?
on my stomach. arms under pillows. one leg up. yo i bought these headphones made specifically for sleeping while listening to relaxing noises or smth & i kid you not i use them shits to listen to asmr/rp audios. sometimes it puts me to sleep other times i'm up all night tryna figure out what position the listener and 'character' are in. anyway!!!
If you had to change your name, what would it be, and why? (In tandem, if you have changed your name, why did you pick that one?)
first thing that comes 2 mindd for whatever reason is 'may' ?? possibly bc i really like my birth name already and 'may' is somewhat close to it already? also because i'd love writing it over and over in my handwriting . probably just an excuse to write the letter 'y' actually.
What is your favorite of Redacted’s audios, and why?
fav character changes ALLL THE TIMEE for no reason my fav is all of them rlly i just wanna love and be loved BUT when i reaaaally think about it ?? hudson. even though he's like. an easter egg. i cant have anything. wanna "D D D D DDDJJJ ANXIETY" into his pants. what. who said that. just got hacked wtff
What Redacted boy holds no appeal to you, and why? Like, not the one you hate but the one who you don’t get the hype for. (I won’t judge, I promise.)
a know a LOTT of ppl love david but i am sorry i just cannot. angel better than me idk how they do it. srry. my momma raised a bitch. i've never ever gotten to finishing any of his videos so maybe im the problem but from the get-go THIS BITCH IS SCARY BRO he's so damn intimidating . the fact that his voice is rlly deep doesn't help either :C ..& don't even get me started on early david.
Which Redacted boy are you platonically attracted to? Like- forget dating, which dude do you want to be your best friend?
this is such a good question rlly makin me think . hmm . OK I FEEL LIKE A BASIC BlTCH BC PPL HAVE BEEN SAYIN THIS ALREADY BUT . hux. we like this 🤞 . as for why?? i feel like i need and would . honestly really appreciate more,, warmth and positivity in my life - and i def get that sorta 'aura' from him. & i know damn well he'd give the best hugs. and we could go to the gym together. it'd be so fun. so precious.
Do you have a go-to thing you ramble about when you’re tired, and if so, what is it? (For example, my boyfriend knows I’m ready to sleep when I start talking about space.)
ok first of all #relationshipgoals that is so sweet awe :((
i wouldn't say i really 'ramble' per say -- i just talk. to myself. like a normal person. mhm. i struggle with sleep in general, so i'm usually up till like 5am. typically endlessly scrolling through my phone, or talking to the abyss about something personal that's been on my mind for a while. if it's really bad, i cry in my voice memos. if i just need to - refresh? get smth off my mind so i can sleep? i write songs.
...and then i record them on my $15 wireless headphones. onto that very same voice memos app.
Tell me your go-to gas station and drink combo.
if im being honest,, depends on my mood . but god could i fuck up some strawberry milk and mini oreos right about now. . mind you i've had strawberry milk like once but it changed my life u dont understand
Tell me about your favorite playlist at the moment.
i mean i don't listen to it 24/7 but man i outdid myself w this one. it's called "insanity" and every single song matches the vibe of . just straight up 'otherworldly' ?? if u catching what im throwin?? all songs r pretty 'out-there' - in terms of the vibes - at least i like to think so. for reference it has songs like "goth - sidewalks and skeletons" and "eternal youth - růde" . IDK i guess it makes me happy when songs from a playlist actually match up with one other
What’s your guilty pleasure media, and why?
i listen to this japanese-kawaii-metal-based group called BABYMETAL and i loveee them soso much. a few "metal enthusiasts" go out and call their work 'not real metal' , which is why i guess you can technically call their music a pleasure media -- as well as the fact that whenever i put on one of their songs mfs r like ... what is this - cause its three young japanese girls talking abt bubblegum with the the most insane guitar riff in the back. their newer stuff is incredible. womanhood at it's finest. give them a shot plspls /nf
ALL DONE !! ty 4 reading & have a lovely day/night, wherever you may be <3
Tumblr media
Oh, this one is perfect and required, like, no thought. Vibes-wise? Given your energy? It’s just gotta be Guy.
Building on that, I love that you write songs and he writes screenplays(?). I think it’s so cute to pair writers together so that you might inspire one another and be each other's biggest fans. I also like Guy for you because he strikes me as one of those people who calls themselves “polyjamorous”, listening to basically anything and everything. He loves all your songs and all your playlists, vibing along to all of it even if there’s no words or words in another language. He doesn’t care: he’s with you, so he’s having a good time.
I would predict a fun, artistic life for the two of you like parallel-playing co-writing sessions with the two of you having individual headphones on, making funny faces at one another when you catch the other staring. You take turns showing each what you’ve created and hyping each other up, offering critique. When the writer's clock keeps y’all up till 3 AM, he’s got leftover pizza and any snacks you could possibly want. (He strikes me as the sort of guy who always has junk food caches.)
Song:
It was just two lovers/ Sittin' in the car, listening to Blonde/ Fallin' for each other/ Pink and orange skies, feelin' super childish/ No Donald Glover/ Missed call from my mother/ Like, "Where you at tonight?" Got no alibi/ I was all alone with the love of my life
Given your passion for music, I tried to pick a love song for y’all that was emotionally evocative to the mind and the ear. I chose this one because I thought the piano instrumental and how it evokes that mental imagery of sitting with someone during the golden hour might resonate with you. I also like it for y’all because this song got really popular on tiktok, and Guy would probably know it from there.
Runner-ups:
Obviously, we have to have Hudson as a runner-up. As a DJ, he’d be so loving and so supportive of your craft, hyping you up on air all the time and playing your work whenever he can. He’d also make you really bomb-ass playlists. A less obvious runner-up would be Anton, but I really like this one. You’d be more of an opposites attract sort of pair, but I think it’d be cute, and listening to music would remind Anton of you while he’s away~
Read this post and send me an ask if you’d like a match-up of your own! 💌

Stand-up shows I’ve seen in the last week or so:
Tom Ballard – It Is I (2023)
This is a show I saw when it came to Canada last year, but it’s now been filmed and has just been put on YouTube, so I watched the video. When I saw it live it was one of my favourite things, I saw it immediately before Josie Long’s Re-Enchantment and came out of that thinking the double billing had made for one of my favourite nights of my life. Certainly one of the top three nights I’ve had since 2019.
I watched the video knowing it wouldn’t be exactly the same. The more comedy I watch, the more I think I prefer audio stuff over filmed stuff. Obviously I know the best way to watch comedy is to be in the room, but it’s difficult for me to be in the room with most of my favourite comedians because of the Atlantic Ocean, so I have to find other ways. Things captured on video are nice because I can see the visual bits, but I sometimes find the editing distracting. The changes in shot, the cuts to the audience, and the vague awareness that stuff has been cut out or spliced together and I’m not seeing everything as it actually happened. Audio often solves these problems – comedians will still edit their recordings before releasing them on audio, but there’s often a lot less editing than in a filmed special, and I find it more immersive because I can put on headphones and close my eyes and feel like I’m there. Though of course this also depends on the audio medium – something recorded for a radio station is still going to be subject to lots of edits. Having tried a lot of different ways to consume comedy, I’m pretty sure the best way to do it is to be in the room, and the second best way is to use the two audio recording Bs (Bandcamp and don’t worry about the other one). Next best option would be the NextUp shows that stream either live or “as live”, because nothing gets cut out and the changes in shots are minimal, so you can get sufficiently used to the one view for it to be immersive. Things filmed and edited go somewhere after that.
All this is to say that I knew the video of Tom Ballard’s It Is I would not be the same as live watching It Is I. But despite going in knowing that, I was a bit disappointed. I think it’s a show that really thrives off the energy in the room, when I was there I got caught up in the frantic pace and the shoutiness of it all. A bit like the Nish Kumar show that I saw live twice before it got filmed, and of course I knew the video wouldn’t be able to capture all that energy. But I found that the Kumar video, despite making the terrible decision to put several ad breaks in it (I assume if you buy it off his website it won’t have those), actually did a pretty decent job of making it feel like a somewhat reasonable facsimile of being there. I don’t know what it did that the Tom Ballard video didn’t do, but it didn’t feel the same.
They censored a few swear words, which is obviously not a way to make the audience feel like they’re in the room. It was only a couple of times in the whole show, but it somehow felt like it broke up the show even more than the ad breaks in Nish’s. It was only the really bad ones – they let him say “fuck” all he liked but censored “faggot” and “cunt” (if anyone is reading this while not knowing who Tom Ballard is, it seems important at this point to say he is gay and the word faggot was a punchline to quite a good joke, I have not suddenly started recommending stand-up shows that feature hate speech).
I think the show changed a bit too. I don’t know how much is that the show just evolved since I watched it, how much is that he took some stuff out specifically for the recording, or how much is that some stuff didn’t make the edit. But when I saw it it had a whole routine about climate change, that had several callbacks and turned into a sort of thread through the whole thing about laughing at stuff that will stop being funny later, and that really tied the show together for me but it wasn’t in the video. Also, there’s a whole fat shaming bit where I swear that when I saw him live it felt justified and clear that he was being ironic and self-deprecating, but in the video I thought it came off as mean (while I’m at this, that’s a little warning for anyone who reads this and then does watch the video, there’s some shouting about fat people that’s done with full awareness and repeated acknowledgement of how fat shaming is bad, that’s kind of the joke, but I think the filmed version sort of misses the part that made it seem okay). Some of the frantic pace and energy was lost in the video too, but that’s to be expected. When I saw him live he poured water on himself at one point, which was kind of stupid and didn’t quite work as well as he seemed to think it did, so I see why he ended up cutting it. But I actually rather liked that bit – seeing a guy try to be the kind of intense comedian who pours water on himself even though it’s a bit awkward did actually create the atmosphere he was going for – and was sorry to see it gone in the video.
All that said, it’s still a great show. It’s angry and funny and he talks a lot of shit about the monarchy and the AI bit doesn’t go on for nearly as long as I’d initially worried it would (it wasn’t bad, it’s just kind of hack at this point to write AI jokes and mock them and made me worried he was going to run with it all show, so don’t worry, he keeps it up for as long as it’s funny and then drops it), and the video did not lose the part where it gets fairly moving at the end about his family. The very last line did get to me emotionally, like it did when I saw him live, and I did immediately go do the thing he told us to do. It’s a good show and I do recommend the video. I just don’t recommend watching a show live and then watching the awkwardly edited video of it.
Okay, that section was way too long and I have to get up early for work tomorrow, so I’m pleased that I now have several shows in a row that were shortened, half-hour versions, so I will try to say less about all of those so I will finish this post in a reasonable amount of time.
Mat Ewins – Live From the BBC (2018)
I’d heard a bunch of stuff about this guy before, and I’d seen him do a few short things, but I hadn’t had the chance to see a full show by him, largely because he does not work at all in the largely audio-based mediums by which I consume comedy. So I was pleased to see he had a half-hour set on Live From the BBC so I could finally see what the fuss was about. The answer was: a show that looked like it was probably absolutely enormous fun if you were physically in the room for it, giggling with people as they knocked things down in the video game, watching the marvels of computer programming come to life before your very eyes. That is less impressive when you’re watching something on a computer, where everything that’s happening is computer programming coming to life before your eyes. I laughed a few times.
Desiree Burch – Live From the BBC (2018)
This was great, felt really coherent and consistently funny. She has a fun outsider perspective on the UK, as an American immigrant, and had a bunch of jokes about that. Also jokes about being fat, but very much from the perspective of making fun of people who are weird and/or horrible about fat people, rather than making fun of herself for being fat (and important distinction – for the latter of those types of jokes, which are not as good, see Tom Ballard). And a bunch of jokes about her sex life – significantly cleaner than her stand-up show on Amazon Prime (Unf*ckable, one of my favourites of the Soho Theatre things on Prime, excellent show, but also one of the most hard R-rated stand-up shows I’ve ever seen), but still dirtier than most stand-up shows. I often find too many sex jokes difficult to listen to, so it’s a testament to Desiree Burch’s skills that I found all of hers enormous fun. Great show.
Fern Brady – Live From the BBC (2018)
This was a great surprise in my discovery of the Live From the BBC thing, that there’s a whole 30-minute set by Fern Brady out there that I hadn’t heard before (to add to her two specials on YouTube, and she’s got another coming soon). Oddly, most of the actual material in this show was new to me, but the stories weren’t, as I’d heard them before in her autobiography. That was an odd but interesting comparison, the way the stories are different when they’ve been moulded into material, versus when she’s telling them in a book. The latter is obviously less funny, and a whole lot darker. I found it very interesting – and a bit harrowing, considering the subject matter – to see how she found the funny bits in a really messed up story and managed to bring those out and make it work as comedy. It does work as comedy, it made me laugh repeatedly, and made me even more excited for her upcoming special.
Amy Matthews – I Feel Like I’m Made of Spiders (2024)
I’d never heard of her before but I gave this a shot because it appeared on NextUp. It wasn’t bad. It wasn’t quite what I was expecting based on the description – it was more of a breakup show than was advertised. And I like a good breakup show, but I didn’t love this, mainly because of the breakup elements. I felt like she left out all the reasons for us to be invested in her story, so were just going along and not really knowing why any of it was happening. The main thing it was was a story about trying to get psychological help for a mental breakdown, but I didn’t find the story all that coherent. I thought the funniest bits were the sound cues where she’d act out a serious and difficult conversation with her friend, who has a kid, over the noise of children playing because her friend couldn’t get childcare. That was pretty funny. The ending was cool but didn’t really seem earned, like it was the ending to a better show than had actually been performed. Having said that, she mentioned that she’s 27, I’m probably being overly judgemental of someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience. It wasn’t bad.
Elis James – Llygaid y Byd (2017)
I watched this because I’ve just finished Elis and John’s audiobook, and one of the last chapters was Elis James discussing his love for the Welsh language, and he spoke so movingly and interestingly about it that I decided to go watch his second Welsh-language special. I’d already seen his first one, hadn’t really been planning to see the second, but he talked me into it in the book.
I get the impression that this one was probably stronger than the first one – the audience sounded more engaged, he got more specific and more clear about what he was trying to say. Much of it didn’t particularly work for me, but I think it really wasn’t meant to, and I think that’s fine. This show was more niche than his first one – seemed to lean entirely into the fact that he was performing in Welsh and in Wales for a crowd that speaks Welsh and is in Wales, and a huge amount of his material poked fun at the nuances of the Welsh language and a lot of really regionally-specific tropes about life in Wales. And I love that for him, and for his audience. The crowd seemed to really enjoy hearing something that was made for them, when few things get made for such a specific niche. I’m genuinely really glad this got made.
I didn’t know what was going on for most of it, because we had subtitles to cross the language barrier, but subtitles don’t get me up to speed on the entire culture of a country. One of his observations was (putting it in quotes but of course I’m paraphrasing): “Young children at the Welsh-language nursery in London who have parents from South Wales have English accents, but kids with parents from North Wales all have North Welsh accents – how do the North Wales parents instill the accent in their kids so well despite also growing up in London?” The audience laughed enough to suggest this observation is accurate. I cannot personally speak to its accuracy, because every person in the world who knows whether that observation is true was physically in the room when this show was recorded.
There was some stuff about talking to his elderly family members on the phone that was pretty funny, some universal observations about how we change our voice and speech patterns for that. And I liked the stuff about visiting his parents with Isy and how weird and frugal they are. But overall, it didn’t need to be universal observations. I’m just glad the people in that room had a good time. This view may be slightly coloured by me having just listened to a chapter of an audiobook where Elis James spoke quite movingly about the importance of preserving the Welsh language, and not just officially but in everyday life, and making it fun and normal and making things for the people who speak it so they don’t have to translate all the time, and it was a really good book chapter.

My friend @pastamansta wanted to know if there was any kidz bop songs that are better than the originals. Luckily I've actually been working on a list and actually have quite a few already! It's not exactly complete so expect a part 2 some point in the future, but should get you a lot.
She's so High - originally by Tal Bachman
This is one that everyone I've shared it with seems to agree it's better than the original. The original song is...fine. Nothing great, nothing awful. The Kidz Bop cover's sole addition of kids choir with the mystery adult cover singer boosts the song from being "fine" to being great. Sadly this song is insanely difficult to find, as it's a b-side to an album that Kidz Bop no longer commercially sells, or at least they no longer do it with the b-side. So the only audio recording I could find online was from a youtube video, which got taken down by Kidz Bop's main company. I am not sure if there's rights issues that keep the main company from officially re-releasing this cover, so this is the best upload I can do.
youtube
What goes around, comes around - originally by Justin Timberlake
Justin Timberlake is, in my opinion, the blandest singer to ever get mainstream. While the kidz bop cover has midi instruments that may make it seem worse than the original at first glance, don't let you fool you, this song is an improvement over the original in every way. If there's one thing that Timberlake does better than the cover, is that he can hit the high notes better than the adult cover artist, but that's about it. This cover also omits the strangest part of the original song, which alone makes it better.
youtube
Big Girls Don't Cry - Originally by Fergie
The adult singer hits every note better than Fergie does somehow. Whoever they got to do this cover did a really, really good job. There's also something about children singing a song with the title "big girls don't cry" that elevates it somehow.
Just as good
I wouldn't call these better but I feel like these covers are just as good as the originals.
youtube
Since U Been Gone - originally by Kelly Clarkson
If there's anything that's better than the original, it's the music video, which is just great and worth the watch. The kidz don't hit the notes quite as good as Kelly, but I don't really expect them to.
youtube
Pocketful of Sunshine - originally by Natasha Bedingfield
This, in my opinion, is the de-facto Kidz Bop cover and what to show to people to prove they can make good covers. Just as good as the original, inserts the adult helper in the right areas (iirc, this is one of the last songs to feature an adult before the albums became kid singers only), and even has a better ending than the original song. Very good, but I simply can't decide if I like it more than the original, thus why it's here.

(Well, this got longer that i anticipated, sorry about the wall of text, anxiety made me do it)
Hey, the person that both recommended in asks and submitted Yuurivoice characters, i just saw a tiktok that kinda upset me and it made me kinda paranoid about the possible consequences of my actions so i just wanted to say:
If any of you following this blog ever want to get into the yuurivoice stuff, specifically bittersweet, please, i'm begging you, be respectful of the fact that he has his reasons to probably never make it 100% explicitly canon in the main storyline, don't be a dick/annoying about it and maybe also don't ask about it's canonicity in stream chat, it's been asked and he has answered many times before just watch the old youtube streams.
(And for the love of god, don't be all passive aggressive about him apperantly "profiting" of the idea of the poly by making an non-canon 18+ audio of the three of them for his patreon [which the patreon and by extension the exlusive content on there is basically his main income afaik and he's only made one or two of the poly out of all the monthly content that makes him money] but still "refusing" to make them canon, like that tiktok person did.
Making it sound all like intentionally manipulative, i guess? Like some sort of eqivalent to like a big studio queerbaiting or something?! What the fuck is wrong with some people?! Especially on that godforsaken app?!)
I usually stay away from both most fandoms (especially asmr/audio roleplay type youtuber fandoms) and tiktok (and especially said fandoms on tiktok) but curiosity got the better of me and i checked the yuurivoice tiktok tag and since i don't have a tiktok account i counldn't check the comments on that video to see how other people responded and i've seen some other people complaining about it not being fully canon on tiktok as well but again since i don't usually interact with the fandom it's hard for me to tell if the bad attitude about the ambiguity is a majority or minority kind of thing in the fandom as a whole.
And while i generally trust that most people following you're lovely blog are gonna be respectful, i couldn't help but be anxious about possibly adding even one other person being so negative about this to the fandom through my recommendation.
And like if you read my rambling on my submission, i personally can't relate to how some people seem so hung up on this needing to be so black and white anyway.
It is canon (and explicitly so) that these three people love each other (in whatever way), are family, are gonna stay together and wanna go home together. If i remember correctly he has said before that it seems like some people like to ignore the found family aspect of the story and how being loved unconditionally now is a huge thing for the one of the three that isn't officially dating the other two (the other two being a couple since the start of the story) because of his backstory.
Idk, since he has metioned that this is essentially a piece of emotionally personal vent art in a way, it just seems kinda disrespectful to me how some people go about this, yk?
And personally i find his reasoning in regards to it needing to be an inherently kinda ambigious situation because of the self-insert aspect understandable.
At one point to being asked about if they're canon he said something along the lines of:
"The best answer to that question is actually "You tell me. Are they? ""
(Again sorry for the wall of text, and the negativity, i guess, i just needed to get this off my chest/make sure.)
some people just love being hateful, sorry they're going through that rn...
to anyone that mightve picked up the recommendatio from past asks, please be respectful to the creator i havent listened to yuurivoice myself, but i dont think theres anything wrong w keeping smth ambiguous as long as ur open about that, which from your asks he seems to have been for a while now?? its not queerbaiting if you literally say "ill leave it up to interpretation" especially considering the self insert element of the listener being included, and the creator trying to be respectful
theres also smth to be said here about the expectation of every polyam relationship being a triangle idk. i also dont see the relevance of an 18+ audio w all 3, i dont see how that would be baiting at all. Sorry the creator is having to deal w bullshit for that.

Langblr Reactivation Challenge by @prepolyglot | week 2, days 4/5/6
-Audio records analysis Okay I knew I have to practice Korean a lot and I got a huge confirmation My French is only a bit rusty (as the writing), I think with some practice I can better it.
-----
-Music time KOREAN 미쳐(Crazy) - 4Minute 일곱 번째 감각 (The 7th Sense) - NCT U
FRENCH Le vent nous portera - Noir Désire Amour plastique - Videoclub
-----
-Studying tips Starting from Korean: I generally use Memrise when studying on my own (may try with Duolingo but I generally leave it cause it has mistakes) and watch youtube videos (by natives, if possible. TTMIK is one of my fav channel also cause of all the free resources they offer). I tend to write everything (or almost) on a notebook. I start with the translitteration ofc and then move on with words and more. I also make researches on tumblr and read KR langblrs' posts to find vocabularies and grammar rules as well. Ofc practicing with natives would be best, but as for now I think I need to know the language a little better.
Having studied French in school, things are kinda different: watching videos or even movies, listening to some songs, reading vocabularies here on tumblr is already helping me to regain some confidence and remember vocabularies and grammar rules. I also met a few natives online, and even if we (well, I) don't have much time to actually chat, I know I am covered on this too.
All in all, I think that the langblr community here on tumblr is really lovely and whenever I post something wrong I'm happy to see corrections: making mistakes helps me understand and remember what I did wrong. So thank you! (And yes, this could be a tip too: don't be scared to write and tag other native/studying langblrs of your target language. Getting real help is so very useful. I treasure that so much!)

I'm Glad My Mom Died Review
I didn't actually plan to make this my first review on this here little book review account, but I loved this book so much that I feel like it deserves a review while it's still fresh in my mind. I never listen to audiobooks but I will admit that, in rare form, I actually did for this book. Jennette McCurdy herself narrated it, which I think gave a lot of insight and a personal touch to the narration (although, if I can be a bit of an ass and critique her a little here, she read way too damn fast, and at times it was a little hard to keep up).
Two years ago, during my own experience recovering from a spiral into disordered eating, I stumbled upon McCurdy's YouTube channel where, before the release of her book, she uploaded podcast episodes and interviews divulging her experiences with disordered eating and her chaotic past. I found so much solace in these videos, and McCurdy's positive yet refreshingly cynical attitude was a huge comfort to me during a difficult time.
Hearing her voice as a writer in this book made my already-massive respect for her grow tenfold. The dysfunction in her childhood is hard to fathom - living in a hoarder house, a disconnected "father," an overbearing and abusive mother, growing up Mormon. There is much that I relate to, especially the "mother-as-best-friend" dynamic, which I myself have been unpacking recently. The realization that Jennette has in therapy, wherein the facade of her perfect mother begins to crack, was fucking gut-wrenching. In the audio recording, it is the only time she chokes out a sob, and... fuck dude. So did I. Jesus.
Her experience with disordered eating is something I, on a much smaller scale, can relate to - the desperate bid for control, the obsession with your body and numbers, the way other problems diminish as your eating disorder becomes all-consuming. However, I can't imagine the scale of her disorder, and the role it played in her life. With such little control, and with such scrutiny by her mother, the people orchestrating her career in the entertainment industry, the public eye, it's as if an eating disorder was the only thing she could have had to control it all, and to shut everything else out. As poor of a coping skill as eating disorders are, I can imagine how, while traumatic, it was also incredibly self-soothing. As Jenette says, eating disorders are the kind of thing you don't really understand until you've had one.
I was at first a bit annoyed by how short each chapter is, and I still feel as though many of them ended a bit abruptly. But I began to appreciate the brevity of each chapter - they each felt like their own short story within the greater context of her life, touching on so many different themes and tracking the minutiae of the periods of her life. Sex and dating and acting and OCD and EDs and her mom's abuse and cancer and dad-reveal are all woven together in small chapters, each one like a slap in the face. Much like Jennette, the reader is battered with traumatic events in succession, with little room to come up for air.
As I mulled about the battering of misfortunes that McCurdy has faced throughout her life, I thought, "How did chaos keep finding her?" And not only her - I've been thinking about my own life, lives of certain friends, of people I knew in school; the lives of people with messy childhoods, who seem to track this mess on their shoes into a muddy-footprinted adulthood. I think that, no matter how inadvertently, chaos follows chaos. You become a magnet for it. Because when you've grown up in it, when you can do a 360º spin and see nothing but chaos in all directions, you can't even see that there is a normal out there. And in your cocoon of chaos, you feel safe, soothed. A million voices at once, plus car crash and wall-punching and glass shattering noises, are going to deafen all the little individual voices in your head - the ones that tell you you're nothing, you're unlovable, you're a failure. So the abusive mom and eating disorders and schizophrenic boyfriend and impostor dad, all of it, seem to be not a random act of misfortunes, a cosmic fluke that caused one single person more grief than a dozen combined, but a testament to the fact that a traumatic childhood leads a person into a life of chaos. Only with reflection, with work, with therapy – with the courage to stop spinning, and to walk straight ahead past and through that 360º circle of chaos – can you finally end the cycle, turn the magnet around, be free of chaos for good.
While I read, I thought of The Bell Jar. Through it all, with gritted teeth, I waited until McCurdy's bell jar would lift - even just a little. And though it seems that her jar may never be all the way up, that her air may always be slightly acrid, it seems that she can now, finally, at least breathe well. That her jar has lifted enough for some reprieve. That is something we can all hope for.

Jonny's Insect Catalogue - Now on YouTube
As mentioned in my 5 Year Anniversary post showcasing a colony of Small Yellow Ants, the blog's reach has been expanded to YouTube as I've created a channel that will host insect videos. If you are interested in insect video content and nature, I will see you there!
With the channel up and running, all the videos featured in this blog’s Video Catalogue will eventually be uploaded there without any caveats. Videos that were previously trimmed or separated into multiple parts will be shown in full. Furthermore, the intent is to upload them chronologically, beginning with every video currently uploaded to this blog. I may jump around a bit, especially if I find an amazing insect to share. Videos will be made ready and uploaded every Sunday, creating the following upload schedule for this blog: Tuesday (Tb) >> Friday (Tb) >> Sunday (YT). For additional information, please refer to the YouTube info section of the blog. If you have further questions, I'm happy to answer them.
The rest of this post will speak briefly on the channel's welcome video (playing above), the channel's outro video and the first insect upload that will grace the channel. I hope to see you in the world of video content creation. Also, I apologize in advance for any audio "pops" heard in earlier recorded videos (particularly those from 2017-2019). Audio for those videos will be cleaned up best as possible before they are uploaded.
Tumblr media
The Channel Welcome video is intended to showcase a glimpse into the content that has been on this blog for 5 years. To keep with the natural feel, the background audio was created using the sounds from the following videos: Asian Ladybug Pupa, Cicada Hatching, Potter Wasp. Ironically, though my channel is focused on insects, the Welcome audio primarily features birds. They may like to eat insects, but they provide some of the best and most recognizable natural ambience sounds! As the video approaches the end, there's also a bit of the outro audio when the logo appears...
Tumblr media
The channel's video outro audio was created by layering the sounds of the insects in these videos into one track: Black-Legged Meadow Katydid, Brown-Belted Bumblebee, Eastern Carpenter Bee, Cicada Hatching. It was a challenge to sync the sounds to the text, but everything eventually clicked together. The outro features the famous slogan for creating a community, "Like, Share, Subscribe", and of course "Thank you for Watching". I do sincerely mean the latter, thank you! Shorter videos will use a truncated version of the outro since doesn't make sense to have the outro longer than the video itself (haha).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I originally created the thumbnails for the videos on this blog, I chose the film strip since it holds strong iconography with visual media and movies. It also seemed classy and clean as well, as if to show the best possible glimpse into the life of the recorded insects. Little did I know that 5 years later I would join them together to create film reel styled graphics for the channel's banner. The image on the left is my first draft, and the image on the right is the final draft currently in use. I didn't want to change the dimensions and content, but it had to fit YouTube's TV and Desktop parameters. Still, I couldn't bare to junk the original, so it's also included in my channel's welcome video before the insect showcase, and it's featured on the blog in a few places.
All text and image graphics used in my video will be created in photoshop. The videos will be compiled together using Clipchamp (as it's the only resource I have at the moment). Though it has tremendously lag during playback, slow finishing export and a cluttered UI, I can make it work.
Finally, the first insect video to official grace my YouTube channel will be the Monarch Butterfly I found emerging from its Chrysalis after a few days of careful observation. It's the video I'm most proud of and it showcases something truly special in the insect world. On YouTube, it has a duration of 4:46 compared to 50 seconds here (it had to be trimmed due to size limitations). I'm honored to finally show it in full. Please see for yourself: Monarch Butterfly - Emerging from its Chrysalis.
Tumblr media
Thank you to all my followers, readers, friends and family for your support and for viewing these insects. Every one of you mean the world to me. The journey into the insect world continues!
This post also represents a serendipitous milestone: 100 video posts uploaded to this blog! Here's to 100 more featuring many amazing insects!

its disability pride month and i'm going through it. vent. check the tags on this one.
sorry there's been so many of these recently, I'm really, really trying not to be this negative, but... man.
something out there wants me dead. bad.
first it was water. then it was depression. then it was anxiety. then it was trauma. then it was graves disease. then it was trauma. then it was adhd. then it was summer in general. then it was maybe autism. then it was trauma. then it was nervous system failure. and now it's an eating disorder.
like not all of those are life-or-death (though adhd can feel like that sometimes lmao) but i've had so many fucking brushes with death that i'm not even afraid of it anymore, i'm just fucking frustrated.
i feel like Mugman from Casino Cups, honestly. "Death is so sudden, it could happen at any moment... everything could end at any moment... and I wouldn't even realize it...
[...]
"I've moved on, I'm not mourning, it's a part of life, but... the unpredictability of it... it's... it's not even SCARY, it's more INFURIATING!! One day, I'll disappear, and... never see where we'll go... never do anything I could have done! I HATE being at its mercy..."
the only difference is that he's died and come back 527 times. i will only die once and then that'll be that.
i've always had a weird fascination with death. maybe it was getting diagnosed with graves disease in middle school that started it (seriously who the FUCK picked "GRAVES" as the name for a disease, did they WANT to freak people out??), maybe it was the realization I'd have it for the rest of my life and now I would have to take pills forever, or maybe it was that first time I almost drowned in elementary school, or the other six times after that. I really don't know.
but i've made it. somehow, some way, i'm still here.
y'know, i wrote an entire ode to death and recorded audio of me reading it. i wanted to put it on youtube but i havent found time to make a video for it. maybe one day. that ode means a lot to me.
i don't know.
the only thing i know is that I want to make the best of the time i've got, which isn't a lot. i don't know how much time i have, but it's less than 20 years i can tell you that right now. if i reach my 40th birthday i will eat both of my shoes AND my hat. i don't mean that in an "i am depressed" way i mean that in a "death and i have a rehearsal at least twice a year and brother i do not know how to dance" way.
i try so, so hard not to be negative online. i really do. i don't want people to remember me as the one who only ever complained, or the one who got angry at everything, or the anxious one who never said anything original or worthwhile, or the one who only ever talked about politics. i want to be a good memory. it's the quote i live by. i want my memory to be a good one.
and i'm failing.
you, right now, reading this. i'm failing you. and i'm sorry. i just... don't know what else to do.
i've realized now that the reason i've been so bent out of shape as of late is because i will never feel safe. even if i moved to the kindest community in the world, even if all the world's political shit got fixed overnight, even if my anxiety and depression suddenly vanished... i can never feel safe because i live in this body. this long-suffering vessel that always, always has something life-threateningly wrong with it.
this eating disorder i have now is only the latest in a long line of shit. each new threat just gets more and more dire. i'm terrified to find out what the next one is. i almost wanna bet money on appendicitis or something but i also don't wanna jinx it, ha.
i'm sorry.
Tumblr media
"Someday we will all just be a memory for some people. I just want that memory to be a good one." - Camila Cuevas (Glitchtale, 2017)
i'll keep trying. i'm going to pass with a smile on my face. that WILL be the last thing i do. i promise.

Michael Zimmerman and the Story of electronicshunt.com
Tumblr media
It certainly isn’t a stretch to say that today’s world is dominated by electronics. It seems like no matter what you do, you need some sort of gadget to do it properly. Whether it be doing work or play, everything that we do these days requires the best electronic gadgets to be at your disposal. A particular niche of note is audio equipment. Everyone is always on the lookout for the best way to listen to music, movies, and more.
I have a long history working with electronics, and audio products specifically, which prompted me to throw my hat in the ring and start electronicshunt.com.
My Background/What Motivated Me To Start A Site
Anybody who can do a cursory Google Search can easily find that there are thousands of different affiliate sites out there selling the same products that I am, so what motivated me to start electronicshunt.com? I have a genuine passion for audio products. I spent much of my life working for companies (such as Harman Consumer Group, DIRECTV and Comcast), where I both sold consumer home electronics components and trained consumers in their use.
My passion began early as I developed an intense fascination with electronics during childhood. By high school, I would buy all sorts of home audio equipment that I could afford like receivers, speakers, turntables, cassette decks, etc. to compare the sound quality and to tinker with them to produce the most stunning high fidelity sound. I was a fan of both digital readout and analog dial receivers as well. I even stumbled across several old tube quad receivers that I had to have and really enjoyed the warmth and power of the sound quality they reproduced.
In college, I refined my interests and built on my passions even further and to go into audio technology. I obtained a degree in commercial music and hoped to make it big in the music industry. I had become a manager of several local jazz performing artists in the Atlanta, GA music scene, even procuring one a recording contract with an Independent music label in 1991. While that venture didn’t quite pan out to the level I was hoping for. I gained some valuable experience that has helped me in every endeavor since these crucial learning years.
My online career started off when I began reviewing a few products that I myself happened to enjoy using (a pair of Sennheiser headphones for anyone wondering) and before long I was writing a ton of different reviews. There was no shortage of audio products to review and different niches to explore.
However, I didn’t immediately go straight towards being an Amazon only business. Over the years I did try to experiment with the various passive income business models.
Anyone who is familiar with online businesses will no doubt know what I am talking about. I tried a lot of things ranging from creating YouTube videos to email marketing, and many other things in-between.
I found that none of them offered the fantastic opportunities that building an Amazon affiliate website does. Amazon affiliate marketing combines a low cost of entry with the unique ability to use Amazon’s already multi-million-dollar brand to your advantage. This is how I ultimately settled on creating sites like electronicshunt.com as the best method for generating a passive income.
The Concept and Ideas Behind electronicshunt.com
The concept behind electronicshunt.com is very simple, I use my expertise gained from many, many years of working in the industry to help people find the absolute best electronics on the market. I do this through a combination of informative product reviews and informational content.
I like to think that my expertise gives me a good insight into what the average consumer is looking for when it comes to audio products like headphones.
I try not to make my reviews cold and impersonal. Instead, I aim to make my product reviews as passionate and as informative as possible. I have stated before that I am not necessarily some recognized expert on this subject, however, I am someone who does have a deep passion for the products that I sell.
The way that I do my reviews isn’t how one would typically expect product reviews to be done. Rather than just writing one long, plodding review of a single product, I instead do multiple product reviews and compile them into a single article that is usually based around a theme (such as the best x under $xxx).
I also don’t just aim to review the absolute best products, I also look at ones that offer good value or that may be good for newcomers.
Challenges In The Market Today
I think when you are dealing with anything electronics based, but especially dealing with niche topics within the field, the biggest issue that you encounter is so many consumers who are interested in that sort of stuff already have pretty good ideas about what they want, and they aren’t particularly interested in reading any sort of generic reviews.
So, reaching these types of readers is always difficult, you can’t just phone it in. These types of readers really want quality content, and you have to work overtime to deliver the sort of content that gets them reading and that genuinely speaks to them. I definitely think that my time spent working directly in the audio industry is what sets me apart here.
Of course, I am also not immune to the struggles everyone else faces when it comes to building an affiliate site. I have to compete with the many competitors out there and I have to work to get eyes on my site. When it comes to overcoming this problem, all I can say is that the old adage of work smarter not harder is the best option. Posting tons and tons of content may work for some, but I find that the best way to build your successful affiliate site is to post the right kind of content.
You also can’t talk about the challenges of doing online business without talking about the one challenge that everyone has to face in the online world, which is SEO. At the end of the day, a large portion of your success is going to come down to whether your site gets ranked on Google. Mastering SEO is an essential step for anyone seeking to build a successful affiliate business.
Finally, there is also just the persistent reality that most affiliate sites don’t work out. They have a low cost of entry and each individual site doesn’t require a ton of work in the grand scheme of things, so individual sites failing isn’t too big of an issue overall, but it can be a disheartening challenge that needs to be overcome.
The Opportunities In The Market
I don’t want to be all doom and gloom, I think a lot of people overly focus on the downsides of trying to start an affiliate site, especially one that is centered around selling products.
While there are plenty of pitfalls, I also think there are a lot of good opportunities for affiliate sites like mine that sell specific products.
First off, one of the biggest opportunities is found in the complete decline of brick and mortar stores, especially for anything related to technology or electronics. Someone starting an affiliate site like electronicshunt.com in say 2010, would have had to compete with stores like The Source, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Circuit City. Nowadays, the vast majority of people looking to buy things like stereos, speakers, and headphones are going to go online, with most ending up on Amazon.
Because a lot of the products that I sell tend to be on the pricier side, a lot of consumers want to check reviews first. No one wants to spend $200 on a pair of headphones, only to find out that they absolutely hate them.
So, I have found that if you can write genuine, informative reviews, you can attract a surprisingly wide audience who are actively in the market to buy the products feature on your affiliate site.
Also, as my own site demonstrates, with the right niche, there are almost an endless array of products to feature, so you should never have to worry about not being able to have content.
My Recommendations For Others Looking To Break In
Much like there are tens of thousands of affiliate sites out there, there are also tens of thousands of sites offering you easy strategies and quick guides to break into the world of passive income. They often promise you quick returns. I find those guides, while not necessarily wrong, often give people unrealistic expectations and they often don’t have any useful tips, so let me remedy that by giving you some tips that I wish I had known when I started.
An SEO Course Is Always Worth It. Without a doubt one of the best tips that I can give is to invest in a good SEO course or program. SEO is probably the fastest changing part of the affiliate business. Google is always changing how it ranks sites and a savvy website builder has to keep up with the latest trends. So, getting some professional guidance is well worth the price of entry.
Plan For Success. Another really key piece of advice that I would offer is to plan for success. I don’t mean be cocky and assume that you are going to succeed, but rather, be prepared for how you will react when one of your sites eventually hits it big. Just because a site is successful doesn’t mean that you can rest on your laurels (not yet anyway), you have to put the site in a position to continue succeeding and you have to plan for your next successful website.
Remember That You Are Playing The (Extremely) Long Game. It is a bit of a cliché but it is worth repeating that Amazon affiliate websites, while a great way to build a passive income, aren’t a fast road to success. It is going to take a while before you have the number of successful sites needed to have a true passive income, and that’s okay as long as you are prepared for that.
It Should Be A One Man Show. While running an affiliate site business with a partner can seem like a tempting prospect since it splits the workload up, I would recommend against it. Early on there won’t be enough profits to really make it worthwhile to work with someone on creating the sites. Also, I find it can lead to a case of there being too many cooks in the kitchen. It is much better for there to be one single vision for the business and having someone else in the picture can make achieving that harder.
Try To Be A Jack Of All Trades. Building affiliate sites and working through Amazon requires a lot of different skills. You have to be able to build attractive sites, write good content, and know how to get eyes onto your content. If you don’t think that you have these skills, don’t worry as there are a ton of different places that can help you out. Places like Warrior Forum are filled with helpful content that lets you learn and improve your skill set.
Finally, Just Be Prepared To Work Hard. My final piece of advice may seem like an obvious one, but it is also something that needs to be stated repeatedly, which is that you have to be prepared to work extremely hard. Passive income businesses and activities like affiliate review sites are often sold as an easy way to generate money, but that is only true in the later stages. The early stages involve a lot of work and a lot of learning, so if you want to reap the rewards, you have to be prepared to put in the hours at the beginning.

Mentally Gil Podcast Premieres: The Headspace Of Creators
The new Mentally Gil podcast exemplifies what makes podcasting such an ideal media format for listeners. This new podcast, which premiered on October 20, deals with mental illness. Yes, there are numerous other podcasts that deal with mental illness, although not enough. I’ll just note that there are more podcasts that instruct you how to get washboard abs than get your head straight. In a battle between a six-pack and finding my mental happy place, I’ll take the head health every time.
What makes Mentally Gil l so unique is…everything. From its smart-ass podcast name — a takeoff on mentally ill because the creator and host is Gil Kruger — to its cutesy, make-you-laugh title song that begins, “His name is Gil, and he’s mentally ill.”
This is how creator and host Gil Kruger frames his new podcast: “On the Mentally Gil podcast, I interview some of the world’s biggest YouTube and social media creators about their mental health journeys. Season one centers around anxiety, OCD, and burnout. The show also explores the connection between mental illness and creativity”
Gil Kruger has been involved in podcasting for over a decade as a podcast think tank for podcast development to producer and executive producer. In short, you may not have heard his voice or name, but he’s been a force in podcasting for a while.
Now, as creator and host of his own podcast, Kruger gets to showcase his on-air talents. And he’s superb at it. He’s a terrific host with nicely woven interviewing skills, supercharged sonic energy, and vocal empathy.
Kruger was able to step away from his busy schedule for this interview, and his time is appreciated.
Q&A with Gil Kruger of the Mentally Gil podcast
Q. How did you develop the topic for your podcast? After all, mental health is a touchy subject.
A. It was early in the pandemic and, like many people, I was feeling very anxious, but there was still a stigma attached to talking about such feelings. Many of the mental health podcasts I sought out involved experts and doctors and gurus talking about this stuff, but I heard very little from people who were actually the ones suffering. That’s when I had the idea to do a podcast where I would only focus on stories from the people who were going through it.
Q. You have extensive experience in podcasting via Rooster Teeth and as a script developer? How did that prepare you for this role as a creator and host?
A. Actually, the consulting I did for Rooster Teeth was my first dip into podcasting. I don’t want to say too much about that project, but it was a true-crime story set in the world of YouTube, so it made a lot of sense for me to try my hand at it. My background is in film and TV. I produced two feature films and oversaw the development and production of a dozen digital series at companies like Fullscreen and eko. I’ve learned a lot about storytelling and marketing as both a buyer and seller of content, and from observing the creators I’ve worked with.
Q. How did your educational experience at NYU in film and TV production prepare you for podcasting?
A. At NYU, I took sound design and other courses that really shaped how I viewed the importance of audio in storytelling. In a movie or TV show, it’s half of the experience. My show’s executive producer, Zac Stuart-Pontier, is an accomplished podcaster, and we met very early on at film school.
Q. How did growing up in North Jersey impact your professional life?
A. I grew up thirty minutes from Manhattan. My parents were (and still are) obsessed with Broadway, and they took advantage of our proximity to the city by taking me to many, many shows. We also lived next to a town with a great arts scene that had three independent movie theatres. There’s no question that the location had an impact on my eventually entering entertainment.
Q. Why focus on popular creators from YouTube and other media?
A. It’s the world that I know the best. I’ve been working with video creators for ten years, and I’ve seen a lot happen: some have quit, some have burned out and eventually returned, others lost themselves in the hamster wheel and are only now learning who they are inside. In future seasons, I’d love to open up the series to interviews with influential people from all walks of life. Gabby Douglas is a dream guest.
Q. Can you give us a heads-up on some upcoming guests?
A. We just released our first two episodes with Grace Helbig and Lauren Riihimaki (LaurDIY). Coming up are creators Kelsey Darragh, Allison Raskin, and Anna Akana.
Q. What will be the most challenging part of podcast hosting?
A. The most challenging part hasn’t been hosting so much as just overseeing the whole thing and finding the right collaborators. I’m not just the host, but I’m also the researcher, the executive producer, the marketer, the brand sales guy, and so forth. The timeline from having the idea to launching the show took almost three years.
Q. How do you view podcasting as strictly an audio medium? How about when a video component is added?
A. I’m not an audio purist, but I prefer podcasts that are produced and which lead the listener on a journey. My show doesn’t have a video component because it’s highly produced — sections of the interviews are condensed or re-arranged, there’s narration, sound design, music, and even skits. It would be very difficult to make a video version of my show. There are a couple of podcasts that I think make very good use of the video medium, though: The Colin & Samir Show and Jay Clouse’s Creative Elements.
Q. On your Twitter feed, when you announced Mentally Gil, you wrote: Spoiler: We’re all nuts. What did you mean?
A. I won’t say everyone, but most people are going through something. One of the messages of Mentally Gil that I want people to hear is that they are not alone in their struggle. If listeners pick up on that, then I think I’ve done my job.
Q. How are you monetizing the podcast?
A. I paid for the show out of pocket, but managed to make a deal with online therapy provider BetterHelp, which saw some early materials and responded well to it. I’m very grateful for their support. I’m still pounding the pavement trying to land more sponsorships.
Q. Finally, what do you want your podcast to say about the state of how society deals with mental health issues? I mean, how bad are we?
A. I’m not trying to make any big statements with the podcast, but personally, I think there’s a lot more work to be done in normalizing conversations around mental health. We also need as a country need to provide better access to mental healthcare. I don’t think any therapist I’ve ever seen has taken insurance.
*********
I’ve listened to the two episodes that have been released to date, and they’re both ear worthy for several reasons.
First, Kruger is an excellent interviewer, and he displays those subtle but important skills in both episodes. Unlike some podcasts hosts who can’t control their guests from blurting out their entire story, Kruger is patient and empathetic with his guests. He helps them unfold their stories carefully, with no demand for lurid details or overhyped stories.
Second, the guests do not have these horrendous childhood tales that make you as the listener go, “That’s why.” No, their stories of burgeoning anxiety are more complex and ultimately more instructive for listeners.
No doubt we all connect creativity with mental illness. Go to the Van Gogh exhibit to appreciate the connection.
And check out Mentally Gil. Kruger helps us ultimately to understand ourselves better. And we all need that.

How can you speed up your travel time in fishing boats and trucks?
This is me. Here's a short story about my life here in America. I've come here from Slovenia when I was just 20, I live on East coast, Mid West and West coast, I've travelled between and to the most remote places in North America, visited Canada and even Alaska.. I wasn't able to stay in any place for too long. New York was home for me for a couple of months, and then it was New York for a few years. However, New York is something you can’t leave out. You have to give it at least one year. It is almost certain to be the most exciting time of your life, if New York has some of it. Whatever you think the story isn't about America's best and worst. This is a story about moving from one spot to the next. I suspect I have an attention deficit of some kind. I haven't tried to see a physician about it. My mother has never had me tested. My house basement is filled with incomplete projects I have. There is a chance that someone will finish them one day, but I can't seem to resist the urge of touching them. But my brain is always on the lookout for the next intriguing idea, the next intriguing concept, next viral gadget, application or even a new Tik Tok challenges. I've tried them every one and seen the majority of them.
Tumblr media
After having traveled several times behind trailers, or taking big boat to Alaska and returning, I would find myself trying to do something, maybe start an entirely new book, or watch some long delayed TV program I downloaded on Hulu application for offline viewing.. There's always something new to be taught, and you must be able to agree that there is no activity to be done on the water. https://mp3juices.ninja/savefrom/ Science fiction podcasts are my favourite thing. First I got into this line of shows through watching a few of them on Hulu and Netflix. Then it was on to how stuff is made and later a few nature documentaries. I finally managed to locate these various video producers on Youtube. Although they all know each others and often quote their colleagues, it's certainly not rumors or an attempt to denigrate them. If they have any experiments that need assistance, they will sometimes get together to record a joint episode. The shows they have shown have entertained me for quite some time. I can watch most of them without any need. I've tried downloading YouTube videos Youtube to my laptop, but then I realized I was just stuffing my laptop with dead weight of videos that I did not like, all I was looking for was the audio part that transform videos into podcasts in the form of short episodes. The YouTube to MP3 online converter is extremely useful. You can enter my channel name and any of the channels and it will bring up the list of videos uploaded. It allows me to search for new videos to download, download them, or convert them to MP3 and save it on my smartphone. It then connects my headphones, so I can listen to podcasts from the videos that are debunked. They usually tell in the beginning if this is going to be a visual or a talk-only episode which helps me to choose which route to go. Convert to mp3 or mp4, audio or video files.. Expectations are high in the interval between the the point of departure and the destination. It's a time full of anticipation, seeking exciting new developments to occur and anticipating the next event and trying to have fun. I learned that Kevin Costner is actually planning to tell stories about locations that you drive by on your long drive to another state or thru many states. Even though it's a monthly cost, you will have to pay a fee. This won't be a good idea for those who live located in Illinois. However, it is still a good idea. I'd like to listen to his comments about the places that I go to and it could replace my own downloaded lectures. The annual subscription will cost $40, but it'll be worthwhile if you frequently travel. It's one of my favorite things to do - lazy ways to earn money, learn as well as earn. It doesn't really matter if KC's soothing voice is telling about the surroundings around you, or if you've saved your favorite videos on Youtube to mp3s that you copied to your smartphone, it is very important to find something exciting to do on long-distance travels. Avoid riding on bicycles or venture out into the open in case you aren't a fan. It could make you get lost in the moment and make you feel unsafe. It's still possible to take pleasure in the back of a car or on boats. Keep in mind that you should be alert for exciting things and keep your ears amused.

How do you speed up your time when you travel in trucks or fishing boats from one place to another?
Salut! Here's my story. I am from Slovenia and moved to the United States at the age of 20. I am located in the East coast. Mid West and West coast. I have been across North America, visiting Canada and Alaska. Although I did not remain at each location for very long, it was a short duration. New York is the most exciting city. If you give New York some time, I'm pretty sure it will be one of the most memorable moments in your life. http://qdownloader.org/ Whatever you think it is not about America's worst and best. This is just a story about moving from one location to another. I believe I'm suffering from some kind of form of attention deficit issues... I haven't attempted to consult a doctor regarding it, and my mom has never had me tested. They are all in my basement. Perhaps one day, someone will find them and finish the entire project, but I just cannot bring myself to touch them. However, I am always searching for the next innovative item, the latest captivating idea, app or Tik Tok contest. I have tried them all. When I was traveling on the trailer of a big vessel to Alaska, I found myself seeking out something to read, or to watch an old television show that I transferred to Hulu to stream offline. It's difficult to discover something new when in a boat. There's almost nothing to do. Science fiction podcasts are my absolute favorite thing.
Tumblr media
I began to watch these shows after watching the shows on Netflix and Hulu. Then came How things were made after which came a few documentary about nature. In the end, I've found numerous video makers on Youtube. Each of them knows each other very well and have quoted their competitors, but they're not spreading rumors or discrediting their coworkers. If their experiments need assistance, they usually gather to discuss episodes. I've been enjoying their shows for a long time. Although most episodes don't need to be watched, you are able to listen to them talk about the current events. They don't usually include experiments, and are all about nature, discussion, and reflection. My initial attempt to download videos from Youtube was unsuccessful. After some time I realized that my computer was overflowing with useless video. What I was really looking for was audio, so I decided to put an end to wasting my time. The YouTube to Mp3 online Converter was very helpful. It allows you to enter your channel's name, or any one of the 4 channels, and it will display the complete list of videos. You can download them, search for new uploads, or even convert the video to MP3 before saving to your phone. Then, I connect my headphones, and then I can listen as podcasts to discredit videos. I can usually tell the difference between a conversational or a visual one in the start. This makes it much easier to decide which way to take and then convert it to mp3 or other audio or video files. Time spent in between ports of departure and points of arrival is always filled with anticipation and anticipation of exciting new things to happen, anticipating to visit new places and have a lot of fun and learn about things actually real.. That's why I myself sometimes can't wait to get there and look up YouTube videos about the area. Kevin Costner plans to tell stories about the places you pass on long drives across other states and states. It will cost the cost of a monthly subscription and will only be available when you're physically elsewhere, it's not possible to hear about Texas even while located in Illinois However, it's nevertheless a good idea. I'd like to listen to the information he gives about the places I have been to. I may even be able to use it to replace my downloads of lectures. It will cost you $40 per year, but when there are a lot of destinations to explore, it will make it worth it. It's my favorite thing. No matter if KC's soft voice is talking to you about your surroundings or you've downloaded YouTube videos in mp3 format and downloaded them to your smartphone, it's a good idea to entertain yourself on long and sedentary travels. Don't ride bikes or venture out into the open if you don't like it. It could cause you to lose track of what's happening and cause you to feel uneasy. If you are in the backseat of a car , or in the boat's belly Keep it in your mind to look up fun stuff and keep you entertained.
